Arvia

Sister for Iona and P&O Cruises’ new flagship

Alan Moorhouse looks at the main features of the new cruise ship Arvia, the latest ship from Meyer Werft to join the fleet of P&O Cruises.

P&O Cruises’ lates cruise ship Arvia, the company’s new flagship, was named in March 2023 at a beachside ceremony in Barbados, which also featured British musician Ed Sheeran.

Arvia (Yard no S716), which means ‘from the seashore’, was laid down on 15 February 2022. She is the second Excellence class ship and follows near sister Iona, being completed at the Meyer Werft shipyard, Papenburg, Germany.

The ship was floated out of Meyer’s Building Dock No.2 on 27 August 2022, and completed at the outfitting quay before a stern-first Ems passage, followed by finishing works at Eemshaven, trials in the North Sea, and a formal handover at Bremerhaven on 15 December 2022.

The original maiden voyage scheduled for December 2022 was cancelled and the ship sailed for the Caribbean via Southampton after a Canary Islands cruise departing on 23 December. The ship returned to Southampton on 2 April for her European season.

Arvia is in the same general class as Costa Cruises’ pair Costa Smeralda and Costa Toscana; AIDA Cruises’ sisters AIDACosma and AIDANova; and Carnival’s Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. The soon to be delivered Carnival Jubilee completes the set. All were constructed either at Meyer Turku or Papenburg.

The latest new ship provides an opportunity to look back at other significant P&O ships and events that have shaped the famous company’s past.

Founded in 1837 by Brodie McGhie Willcox and Arthur Anderson with the charter of the 206-ton William Fawcett operated by Captain Richard Bourne, P&O has been a major force in British shipping for over 185 years.

Much of this history is displayed on board Arvia, and illustrations and information panels are displayed aboard other ships in the current P&O fleet. Key ships in the past, notably in the immediate post-war era, include the liners Oriana (1959/41,910gt); Canberra (1961/45,270gt), often referred to as the ‘Great White Whale’ after her involvement in the 1982 Falklands Campaign; Orsova (1953/29,790gt); and Arcadia (1954 29,734gt).

P&O Cruises, as a distinct entity, emerged in 1977 as cruising became a popular travel experience. In 2003 P&O Cruises became part of the Carnival group and subsequently underwent an image change, with the famous yellow hull colouring being replaced by blue funnels and Union flag hull art.

Management of the P&O Carnival brand is currently the responsibility of President Paul Ludlow. A P&O Australia brand was also established.

Arvia, like her sister Iona, is 184,700gt and measures 345m in length. She is LNG-powered and has MAK Caterpillar engines with an output of 74MW (99,236hp), giving a top speed of 22 knots.

The $950 million ship can accommodate 5,206 passengers in 2,610 cabins and the crew complement is 1,762. Passenger accommodation is located in the forward sections of Decks 8, 16 and 17 and on Decks 9 to 15. The public areas are on Decks 4 and 5, and deck 16 upwards.

Impressive features

Arvia shares many features, internally and externally, with Iona. The Crow’s Nest, the Horizon Buffet, Limelight Lounge and Headliners theatre are key interior public spaces which share many similarities.

One of the main differences is the Magrodome retractable roof on Arvia, enclosing decks 16, 17 and 18. This structure, which is an evolution of Iona’s fixed Skydome, is a creation of designer Martin Francis. It is intended to provide a light open air top deck to facilitate shows and musical performances in both cold and warm climates.

The 970m2 retractable Magrodome over the pool lido area and sea screen weighs 156 tons. Other differences between the two ships include the Mission Control Escape Room, the Swim Up Bar, the Altitude Experience, and the new Mizuhana and 6th Street restaurants, as well as extended freestyle dining opportunities.

The focal point of Arvia is the Grand Atrium, which rises upwards from deck 6. The main entertainment venues are the Headliners Theatre (decks 6 and 7), the main show lounge featuring shows and musicals, the Sunset Bar and Clubhouse, Limelight Club, Andersons and the 710 Club (deck 6). The Crow’s Nest with forward observation views is on deck 17. The Oasis Spa is on deck 6, the Medical Centre is on deck 3, and the Casino and the Avenue shopping arcade are on deck 7.

Arvia's Grand Atrium.

Dining opportunities

Dining opportunities are specifically aimed at the British market and feature the cuisine of international chefs Shivi Ramoutar and Jose Pizzaro, with a focus on Caribbean and Mediterranean cuisine. The main dining venues are the Zenith Restaurant (deck 7), Meridian Restaurant (deck 6), Olive Grove, 6th Street Diner, and casual dining in the Horizon all-day buffet (deck 16).

Speciality restaurants include Sindhu, Taste 360 and Epicurean. Other drinking and dining venues include the Keel and Cow gastro pub and the Hook and Vinegar seafood takeaway. The upper open decks include the main pool and lido areas, sports area, Beachcombers pool, and infinity pool with adjacent bars.

P&O Cruises fleet

With the addition of the new Arvia, the current P&O Cruises fleet comprises seven ships:

  • Arvia (2022)
  • Aurora (2000/76,152gt)
  • Arcadia (2005/84,342gt)

Home P&O Cruises Arvia

Arvia is P&O Cruises’ second Excel-class vessel, following the arrival of Iona in 2020.

Like her sister ship, Arvia continues P&O Cruises ’ take on British-style modern luxury, with spacious public areas, an almost limitless range of facilities and comfortable accommodations for 5,300 guests. Her name translates to “from the seashore”. Hence, natural light and uncompromised ocean vistas are a prominent feature of the ship’s design, from the impressive retractable skydome on the top two decks to the large panoramic windows that line the lounges and restaurants.

For sustainability, Arvia is powered by LNG (liquified natural gas) and uses ship-to-shore connectivity while in port, thus reducing carbon emissions and making the vessel one of the greenest cruise ships in the world.

Arvia will commence her service for P&O in December with an inaugural voyage from Southampton to the Canary Islands. She will then spend the winter cruising the Caribbean before returning to the UK, operating Mediterranean sailings throughout the spring and summer.

Arvia cabins review

PO Arvia cruise ship cabins are 4 main types (suite, balcony, sea view/oceanview/outside, interior, single), divided into 12 categories and 32 grades. The liner has a total of 2610 passenger staterooms and max capacity 6264 (5204 lower berths).

Staterooms include 121 Suites, 1496 Balcony, 174 Oceanviews/Seaviews, 819 Interior cabins. P&O Arvia has a total of 32 studios (single-occupancy cabins) and 55 wheelchair-accessible/handicap cabins (for disabled passengers). Most cabins are sized between 135-170 ft2 (13-16 m2).

Excepting the Suites, all cabin balconies are very small - sized just 20 ft2 (2 m2). Cabin balconies in the forward section can be overlooked by the Navigation Bridge (Wheelhouse).

The boat has 8 laundrettes (self-service laundry rooms for passengers) located midship on decks 4-5-9-10-11-12-14-15.

2-Room Sky Suites are located either aft and forward and designed as boutique-hotel rooms. They consist of interconnecting rooms whose doors can be fully opened to create a larger lounge space. The furniture is contemporary and comfort and includes a sofa, ottoman chairs, lounge chairs, soft furnishings and accessories (cushions, premium twill throws, LED lighting/ceiling and wall-mounted lamps). These Suites (categories B4-B5-B6) have spacious bathrooms with double sink vanities, black marble tops, white marble walls and floors, whirlpool bathtubs. All suites feature separate lounge-bedroom areas, designated dressing areas, large step-out balconies and exclusive services (personal Butler, in-cabin dining, priority services).

Conservatory Mini-Suite is a new cabin concept featuring a separate, conservatory-style room designed as cabin extension. Located between the cabin and the balcony, this separate room is furnished with an L-shaped sofa to create a distinctive lounge space. Via sliding glass-doors, this "small room" can be closed off for more privacy (parties, celebrations, conversations). Via other glass-doors (bi-folds), the room can be opened out fully onto the cabin's step-out balcony, providing a cool and shaded indoor space for relaxation.

Balcony staterooms are in 3 main categories (Deluxe, Standard, Smaller) plus Single Balcony. Many are with interconnecting doors, making them a perfect choice for families and small groups. Balcony cabins also allow outdoor dining via cruise ship's Room Service menu.

For larger families and groups, balcony cabins are fitted with built-in bunks (fold-out, pull-down beds). On decks 10-11-12-14-15 there are forward-facing cabins with larger (steel-fronted) balconies overlooking the ship's bow. Due to their location and larger-sized verandas, these staterooms (categories EE-Deluxe, GE-Standard) are among the premium cabin grades. Single Balcony cabins (category QZ) are located aft on decks 9-11-14. They are smaller-sized double cabins but can be booked without a single supplement.

P&O UK's Arvia liner has interior staterooms on all cabin decks. Single Inside cabins (category SZ) are standard-sized double cabins but can be booked by solo travelling passengers without paying a single supplement.

All staterooms have Queen-size beds (convertible to two twins/single beds), bedside cabinets, wall-mounted reading lamps, seating area (sofabed/2-seater couch with a modern dining-coffee table), mirrored vanity table/writing desk with chair, mirrored wardrobe (large closet with sliding doors, hangers, drawers, electronic safe box), direct-dial phone, smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies, Room Service ordering, booking/reservations), hairdryer, round-shaped (porthole-like) mirrors for decoration, en suite bathroom (WC-toilet, single-sink vanity, shower).

All pull-down bunk beds are accessible via a ladder. All cabin balconies are furnished with 2 deck chairs and a small table. All cabin bathrooms are with shower-WC configurations. 2-Room Suites (categories B4, B5, B6) additionally have bathtubs. All Suites receive bathrobes and slippers.

The top 10 biggest cruise ships in the world

M odern cruise ships continue to grow in size, with the biggest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas , launching at the start of this year, and her sister ship the Star of the Seas expected to surpass her in size.

Both of these ships are operated by Royal Caribbean International, which operates five of the ten largest cruise ships in the world. Carnival Corporation, arguably the biggest cruise company in the world, features three times on the list through its subsidiaries P&O Cruises and Costa Cruises.

All of the heaviest cruise ships in the world were built within the last 20 years, although the majority – six of the ten – were built within the last five years.

So, here are the top ten biggest cruise ships in the world, by gross tonnage.

10. P&O Cruises MS Arvia : 185,581 gross tonnes

The MS Arvia is P&O Cruises’ fourth ship to be built by German shipyard Meyer Werft. Weighing in at 185,581 gross tonnes, the 345m (1,130-foot) Arvia is slightly larger than her sister ship, the MS Iona . The 20-deck ship is the largest ship commissioned for the British cruise market and has a maximum passenger capacity of 6,264 passengers, with 1,800 crew onboard.

The ship is the second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Excellence-class vessel for P&O, following the Iona . Arvia is powered by a 61,760kW LNG drive system, with a propulsion power of 37 megawatts. The LNG-powered propulsion system allows the vessel to sail at a maximum speed of 21.5 knots.

After being floated out in August 2022, the Arvia mainly operates itineraries around the Caribbean or the Mediterranean.

9. Costa Cruises – Costa Smeralda : 185,010 gross tonnes

The Costa Smeralda is the first LNG-powered vessel in the Costa Cruises fleet. With a gross tonnage of 185,010gt, the 20-deck Excellence-class ship measures 337m (1,106 feet) in length. The second LNG-powered cruise ship to enter operation in the world, she has a maximum capacity of 6,554 passengers with 1,646 crew and a service speed of 21.5 knots.

Construction of the Costa Smeralda began at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, in September 2017. Meyer Turku collaborated with the Meyer Werft Papenburg shipyard to develop and integrate the LNG propulsion plant for the ship. She is fitted with four 16-cylinder, Caterpillar MaK 16VM46DF engines, with 15.4 megawatts (20,710 horsepower) output per engine, resulting in a maximum power of  37 megawatts (50,000 horsepower).

The ship, which was named after the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, entered service in December 2019 , departing Savona on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, where it has sailed since.

8. Costa Cruises – Costa Toscana : 186,364 gross tonnes

The Costa Toscana is the sister ship of the Costa Smeralda and is also powered by LNG . measuring 337m (1,106 feet) long and weighing in at 186,364 gross tonnes, the Toscana has a maximum capacity of 6,338 passengers and 1,678 staff across her 20 decks.

Like her sister ship, the Toscana was also built at the Meyer shipyard in Finland, with construction completed in 2021. She is also powered by four MaK-Caterpillar engines, with a total power of 57.2 megawatts (76,706 horsepower), and two ABB Azipod motors , resulting in a service speed of 17 knots.

Named in homage to the Tuscany region of Italy, Costa Toscana mainly sails around the Mediterranean Sea but Costa Cruises has also used the ship to sail itineraries further afield, such as around Brazil and the UAE.

7. MSC Cruises – MSC World Europa : 215,863 gross tonnes

The only entry in the top ten from MSC Cruises, MSC World Europa measures 333m (1,094 feet) in length. With 215,863 gross tonnage, she can house more people than any other ship in the MSC fleet: up to 6,762 passengers across 2,633 cabins spread over 22 decks, in addition to 2,138 crew.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, the World Europa ’s LNG-power propulsion system was subcontracted to Finland-based Wärtsilä. Five LNG-powered, 14-cylinder Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines power the vessel, with a propulsion power of 44 megawatts ( 59,005 horsepower). She also features nitrogen oxide reduction (NOR) units, two Wartsila LNGPac fuel storage and supply systems, seven thrusters, and two fixed-pitch propellers.

People travelling around Southampton this weekend are being warned to prepare for traffic delays as the Saints football game coincides with a number of cruise ships arriving.

The centre of Southampton is expected to be busy with a number of events happening in the city, including increased passenger numbers on Red Funnel Crossings.

Red Funnel are expecting particularly busy services on Saturday, making the waterfront area busier than usual.

On Saturday, Southampton Football Club are also playing at home at 3pm so routes around St Mary’s stadium will be busier than usual before and after the game.

The city council say the temporary anti-clockwise, one-way system on the Ring Road remains in place - from Charlotte Place to the Civic Centre.

Across Friday and Saturday four cruise ships were due to visit the port - Iona, Sky Princess and Arcadia.

On Sunday, four cruise ships will be docking in Southampton - Queen Mary 2, Arvia, Queen Victoria and MSC Poesia.
