The 20 Best Tours in Phuket 🏝️

  • Best of Phuket , Cruises , Tours , What to Do?
  • Last updated 10 October 2023 20 March 2024

What are the most popular tours in Phuket?

There are a lot of Phuket Tours to explore in and around the island, and many places are easy to reach, so what are the best? Some other great places need a boat or a minibus ride and a bit of planning. We list here 10 of the most popular day trip tours you should consider. Of course, we know there are many more, and we will add them as we try them.

The best Phuket tours start with Phang Nga Bay and often include a few nearby islands, such as Phi Phi and Similan Islands. Tours on the island itself include the Big Buddha , the much revered Chalong temple and the exploration of the old streets of Phuket Town .

1. Phang Nga Bay Tour

Seacanoe in Phang Nga Bay

(With John Gray Hong by Starlight: 3,950 baht – 11:30 am 10:00 pm – Other tours 1,600 baht)

Phang Nga Bay is a fantastic wonder of the world and is an absolute must-do while in Phuket. As with any favourite Phuket tour, Phang Nga tends to become busy, but it’s enormous, and some tours, like the famous John Gray SeaCanoe , know how to take you where and when other tourists don’t go. The massive limestone formations rising above the water seem to come straight out of the movie Avatar (or it was possibly the other way around). The place was even featured as a background in one Star Wars episode (the bad one, I think). Phang Nga Bay is one of the best tours in Phuket. Read more

Kayaking Phang Nga Bay with John Grey Seacanoe

What we like a) As mentioned above, it’s just fantastic. b) The sea is quiet all year round and even looks better with the big rain clouds! c) It’s not very far, and all tour agents will pick you up at your hotel — no stress. What We Don’t a) Not every tour is Eco-friendly; some have no real experience and make lots of noise and shout, disturbing the magical peace.

Popular Ways to Discover Phang Nga Bay

Island hopping with faraway yachting.

2. Phi Phi Island Day Trip

Phi Phi Island in Thailand

(about 2,800 baht – full day)

Phi Phi seems to be the Phuket tour on everyone’s list of islands to visit. It usually is for several reasons: The islands look fabulous, with two bays surrounded by vertical limestone cliffs. The beach parties are notorious and can last all night. Backpackers seem to have made Phi Phi their destination of choice. It also is an excellent snorkelling and diving destination for all levels, from beginners to wreck diving. There is an even more straightforward reason: they saw Maya Bay in the movie “The Beach” and wanted to know the place for themselves. Read more

Viking Cave - Phi Phi Island

A typical day trip to Phi Phi :

7.30: Pick up at your hotel 8.30 : Meet and greet at Royal Phuket Marina, short briefing. 9.30 : Departure by speedboat 10.30 : Enjoy snorkelling and swimming at Camel Rock, Monkey Bay Sightseeing 11.45 : Snorkeling near Phi Phi Don 12.30 : Lunch in Tonsai Bay on Phi Phi Don 13.30 : Head to Phi Phi Ley: pass by Viking Cave, swim at Piley Lagoon, and Sightseeing at Maya Bay. 15.30 : Relax, swim and snorkel on Koh Khai Nai, a small island on the way back. 16.30 : Arrive at the pier and depart to your hotel.

What’s good: a) It’s still beautiful a beautiful island, despite being spoiled mainly by unstoppable construction. b) It’s not very far from Phuket and affordable if you go by ferry c) The island being in a bay, it is accessible all year round (unlike Similan) d) Maya Bay is open again!

What’s Not: a) Uncontrolled constructions have spoiled the island, and it keeps extending. b) Phi Phi can get crowded with young backpackers coming here for a serious party, so it may not be your vision of relaxing beaches.

Popular Ways to Discover Phi Phi Island

3. James Bond Island Tour and Koh Panyi Village

James Bond Island

(Start at 1,800 baht, including pickup and return to hotel – join trip)

Usually, James Bond and Koh Panyi are part of any Phang Nga Bay tour. If you have time, we recommend dedicating one day to a Canoe in Phang Nga Bay, then another day to James Bond, Koh Panyi, the village on stilts and the reclining Buddha inside a cave. Read more

What we like: a) Going there offers amazing photo opportunities; the location and the cruise to get there are jaw-dropping. b) The village on stilts is unique, unusual and fun to explore. What we don’t: a) It’s a major tourist attraction, so expect a lot of people at midday, which spoils a bit the exotic feeling

7. Phuket Town Tour

Phuket Town, Thailand

(about 900 baht – half day)

In recent years, Phuket town has become a charming city with several historic streets and many beautiful old Sino-Portuguese mansions, some renovated and some partly run down. You might get to see some local markets and even visit some Thai temple and their typical intricate gold, red and green roofs. Exploring the picturesque street now full of little cafes and shops is a popular photo opportunity, mostly since they buried those horrible electric cables. Read more

Yaowarat Road in Phuket Town

What we like: a) It’s a good exploration day, especially when the weather is not favourable to be on the beach b) It’s not such a big area, so it’s easy to walk along the streets and between landmarks What we don’t: a) It’s relatively small, so don’t put your expectations too high either

Popular Ways to Discover Phuket Town

8. similan islands day trip.

phuket snorkeling

(about 2,600 baht – full day)

Unique and beautiful, the Similans have the white sand and blue water you only see in postcards. It’s so strikingly beautiful that your friends might believe you photoshopped your photos. But it is that blue even in photos taken with a mobile phone!

It used to be possible to spend the night in a tent or a basic bungalow with air-conditioning, but it seems that this option is not available at this time! Apart from snorkelling, sunning, and a small restaurant, there is not much to do, but it’s a Robinson Crusoe experience you don’t want to miss. Read more

Popular Ways to Discover Similan Islands

The old-fashioned elephant trekking is over! Ask your hotel or travel agent for one of the sanctuaries but skip the trekking or elephant riding! Read more

Tree Top Elephant Reserve Phuket

What we like: a) It’s fun, unusual and the best way to see real elephants! What we don’t: a) Some of the sanctuaries may feel a little too touristic (they probably switched from trekking to the sanctuary to catch the wave)

Popular Ways to Discover Elephant Sanctuaries

12. phang nga bay private cruises.

Best tours in Phuket - Day trips and excursions

Phang Nga Bay is an amazing destination. With its countless islands and towering cliffs emerging from the sea, the scenery is truly extraordinary. It often ranks at the top for many tourists, however, the popular areas of Phang Nga Bay can become overcrowded, making it difficult to fully appreciate its natural beauty. Therefore, on that particular day, we made a decision along with a few friends to rent a private boat and explore Phang Nga Bay in a more exclusive manner, allowing us to reach each location before the crowds arrived.

Phang Nga Bay private cruises

13. Koh Khai Tours

Koh Khai Islands

(about 1,900 baht – Full day)

This tour goes to the tiny Koh Khai islands, found just a few kilometres off Phuket looks like a cartoon postcard of a tropical island. There is not much to do there apart from sunbathing, snorkelling or swimming with hundred fish and drinking fresh coconuts. It’s so back to basics but isn’t it why you came to Phuket in the first place?

The tour went smooth all the way from the beginning to the end. I received my itinerary and flight information about 3 weeks prior to my departure date, as promised. I even contacted the hotel I'd be staying at to confirm my stay and found that Indus had everything set up for my arrival. The hotels were comfortable and clean. Email correspondences were prompt and the tour agents in Thailand were professional and very kind. The customer service on the flight was really good as well.

Khao Sok National Park Adventure 3D/2N Tour

Khao Sok National Park Adventure 3D/2N

The nature and the scenery was very beautiful and a really nice way to get out of the tourist trap this is Phuket. The tour was broken into two parts both times I was the only solo traveller which was a bit lonely at some points. The first part in the Jungle was amazing, incredible guide Yaya and the jungle trekking was awesome. The elephant ride was not so good as the elephants did not seem very well treated and were constantly poked with metal prods to keep them in line seemed quite cruel. The second part of the tour was terrible and this was all due to the guide. The nature is self was very beautiful and again an amazing place to visit however a tour guide can really make or break and experience. The group I had was made up of myself, two Austrians and four Russians (Who could all speak good English) and the guide Sasha who hardly ever spoke English and only spoke Russian. As a tour guide myself in my home country I can confidentially say he was the worst tour guide I have ever come across. I won't go into too much detail but I when you are paying for an English Speaking tour guide and receive one who can hardly string together a few sentences in English and does the minimal commentary in Russian even after you ask him to speak English does not make for a good experience. Having said that the first half of the tour was amazing, the Thai guide Yaya was very knowledgable, fun and interactive with the group. I don't regret going but would probably not recommend going alone and hopefully you get a better guide than Sasha because it is a fantastic place to visit when in Thailand.

Sailing Thailand - Phuket to Ko Phi Phi Tour

Sailing Thailand - Phuket to Ko Phi Phi

This tour was the highlight of my trip to Thailand. The scenery was beautiful. The snorkelling was amazing. Everyone on the boat was lovely including the crew and all passengers. Our guide "A" was very knowledgeable about the area. He chose the best places to go at the best times so we usually had the sites to ourselves and he chose wondrous places for snorkelling. The scenery below the water was even more breathtaking than above. My cabin was very comfortable, the mattress was better than any hotels I stayed at on this trip. I can't fault this trip at all.

Thai Intro 18 Day

I’ve just finished the 18 day Intro Thailand tour with Dan Woodward and Joe as group leaders. Can easily say it was the most amazing experience, meeting some incredible people and I loved every second of it. It was so well organised and really didn’t have to worry about anything with all transport between places and accomodation organised so could enjoy visiting all these beautiful places. Dan (and Joe) were both amazing leaders and bought so much energy and knowledge whilst supportive with any queries or problems that arose including onward travel. Thai Experience Tour

Thai Experience

An Unforgettable Journey: A Review of My Introductory Thai Experience with Dan, the Exceptional Tour Guide" From the bustling streets of Bangkok to the elephant sanctuary in Phuket, my introductory Thai experience with Dan as my tour guide was nothing short of extraordinary. As a seasoned traveler, I've embarked on many adventures, but none have left such an indelible mark on my heart and mind as this one. From the moment I met Dan, his warmth and enthusiasm for sharing the beauty and culture of Thailand were palpable. His deep knowledge of the country's history, customs, and traditions added layers of depth to every experience, making each moment rich with meaning. Our journey began in the vibrant city of Bangkok, where Dan expertly navigated the chaotic streets, introducing me to hidden gems and local haunts that I would have never discovered on my own. From savoring street food delicacies at the bustling markets every moment was a revelation. One of the highlights of our time in Bangkok was visiting Wat Pho, home to the majestic reclining Buddha. Dan's insights into Buddhist philosophy and the significance of each intricate detail of the temple left me in awe. It was a truly spiritual experience that I will always cherish. As we journeyed south through the country we travelled to places that include the following: Khao Sok, Koh Phangan, Phi Phi islands and Phuket. Dan's passion for adventure shone through as we explored the lush jungles and picturesque countryside. From trekking through the National Park to staying in jungle trees and floating bungalows, every day brought new adventures and unforgettable memories. But what truly sets Dan apart is his genuine care and concern for his guests. Whether it was ensuring that I was comfortable and well taken care of or going above and beyond to accommodate my interests and preferences, Dan's hospitality knew no bounds. He not only guided me through Thailand but also opened my eyes to the kindness and generosity of the Thai people. In conclusion, my introductory Thai experience with Dan was nothing short of magical. His passion for sharing the beauty and richness of Thailand, coupled with his unparalleled expertise and genuine warmth, made it an adventure of a lifetime. I cannot recommend him highly enough to anyone looking to explore the wonders of this incredible country. Dan is not just a tour guide; he is a true ambassador of Thai culture and hospitality. His company Intro Travel are truly blessed to have an employee like him and they work hand in hand together in synergy. Dan from the bottom of my heart thank you for the best memory’s of my life.

With its pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural heritage, Phuket is a must-visit destination. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, adventure, or a mix of both, our Phuket tour packages cater to all your desires.

Phuket enjoys a tropical monsoon climate, with two distinct seasons: the dry season from November to April and the wet season from May to October. The dry season is considered the best time to visit Phuket, with pleasant temperatures ranging from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius (77 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit). This is the perfect time to embark on island-hopping tours, explore Phang Nga Bay, or indulge in thrilling activities like snorkeling and diving.

During the wet season, Phuket experiences occasional rain showers and higher humidity. Despite the rainfall, Phuket retains its charm with lush greenery and fewer crowds. It’s a great time to take advantage of lower prices and enjoy a more tranquil experience. The rain showers are usually short-lived, and the sun often reemerges, allowing you to continue your exploration of the island’s natural beauty.

Phuket offers a diverse range of attractions and activities for every traveler. Discover the vibrant nightlife of Patong, explore the historic Old Town with its Sino-Portuguese architecture, or immerse yourself in the cultural wonders of temples like Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha. December, in particular, is the coolest month, while February brings the driest weather. During this period, you can relax on Phuket’s stunning beaches during the day and enjoy the vibrant nightlife at the island’s numerous nightclubs.

From March to mid-May, Phuket experiences its warmest months just before the arrival of the monsoon season. Temperatures soar into the mid-thirties, accompanied by increasing humidity levels. Despite the heat, visiting Phuket in April allows you to partake in the festive celebrations of Songkran, the Thai New Year, where water is joyfully splashed among people.

The monsoon season in Phuket spans from mid-May to October, bringing occasional showers and higher humidity. However, this period also presents a unique opportunity to experience Phuket at lower rates and with fewer crowds. James Bond Island Phuket

Located in Phang Nga Bay to the northeast of Phuket Island, James Bond Island is also known as Khao Ping Kan by the locals. Among the numerous attractions in Phang Nga, this peculiar limestone rock formation is a popular tourist destination in Phuket. Whether you hear favourable or bad things about this famous island, you should definitely go see it for yourself since it is really incredible.

Since the release of the film, the island’s profile has skyrocketed. Similar things occurred in “The Beach” on Phi Phi Island after the DiCaprio 2000 film and at the Sky Bar at the Lebua Hotel in Bangkok after “The Hangover II” (33% satisfaction, because we know you’ll ask).

This place is so far out, it’s like another planet! Phang Nga Bay is home to this stunning island, and the boat ride there from Phuket Island is nothing short of spectacular because of the beautiful limestone cliffs. The natural beauty of the Island itself is breathtaking. The Island was chosen because it is both a natural curiosity and a fantastic location for still photography. Realizing there is no entrance to the hidden lair and no radar coming out of the rock is always a hoot to witness in a movie, no matter how dated it may be. Lunch at the unexpected floating hamlet of Koh Panyi is a highlight of a stunning day excursion to the spectacular Phang Nga Bay. Yummy flat dried squid is available for purchase and consumption (Pla Mook Haeng). If you’re interested in this kind of regional delicacy,

Patong Beach Phuket

One of the most visited beaches in Phuket is Patong, a 3-kilometer stretch of golden sand. Tourists lounging on the sand are constantly harassed by parasailers, jet skiers, boat drivers, beach sellers, and masseuses.

To divide Patong Beach’s sand from the busy road, a line of palm, coconut, and tropical almond trees has been planted. In this more shaded section, you’ll find food and drink stands, as well as massage parlours set up right on the beach. Towards the centre of the beach, close to the entrance to Bangla Road, you’ll discover beachside eateries and pubs serving modest Thai and foreign meals.

During the peak season, there is a little sandy stream in the northern portion of Patong Beach with very shallow and clean water. Several fishing vessels rest near the river’s mouth towards the south. There is a tiny fishing hamlet and a number of beaches and bays in the area surrounding the peninsula that divides Patong from Karon, all of which are accessible through the bridge across the river.

The months of November through April are ideal for a trip to Phuket’s Patong Beach due to the relative calmness of the water throughout those months. Dangerous surges and high waves hit the beach every summer between the months of May and October. Pay close attention to the red caution flags that are placed in the sand even on days when swimming is permitted.

Kata beach Phuket

Kata Beach is a 1.5-kilometer stretch of heaven and, perhaps, the most stunning beach in Phuket. Kata beach is one of the best in Phuket for many reasons, including its white beaches, clean waters, tropical plants, and numerous activities. In all honesty, Kata beach offers everything you could want. Everything from rest and relaxation on the golden beaches and in the crystal-clear waters to surfing, snorkelling, family fun, and more could be found here. Honestly, this beach belongs to everyone.

A mile long of pristine beach meets azure water; relax with a thai massage in the shade to the south, or try your hand at kayaking or scuba diving up north; either way, you’re sure to be in awe of this breathtaking setting.

Karon beach Phuket

Karon Beach, on the western coast of Phuket, is one of the island’s longest beaches at 5 kilometres long. Karon Beach is less busy than its counterparts, yet it has equally stunning vistas of golden sands that give way to the ocean’s beautiful blue waters.

It is well-known for its broad and tranquil mini-beaches, which are complemented by a large variety of charming hotels. The majority of Karon beach hotels have high-quality dining options, including both international and traditional Thai cuisine.

The beach also offers a broad variety of entertainment options. Popular activities include swimming, snorkelling, other water sports, and even hiking. Wearing a lifejacket is recommended at all times, regardless of previous expertise, while engaging in motorized water sports activities.

A traditional Thai massage may be enjoyed on the beach when you’re ready to unwind. Many of the large hotels on Karon Beach provide culinary classes for guests who want to expand their horizons while on vacation.

Big Buddha Phuket

From anyplace in southern Phuket, you can see the 45-meter-tall white marble monument known as the Phuket Big Buddha. One of the most jaw-dropping sights in Phuket, this landmark is on the bucket list of virtually every tourist. The vistas from that height are absolutely stunning. The Giant Buddha on Koh Samui has long been a tourist attraction, and Phuket residents wanted one of their own. The Big Buddha is also open to the public without charge.

The road up to the statue is smooth and simple to ride, despite its numerous twists and turns; nevertheless, you should take your time and be cautious on the way back. When you get to the top of the hill, you’ll find a lot that’s both spacious and easy to navigate. At the entrance, a security guard will inspect your clothing; if your shorts or skirt are too short, you will be given a complimentary sarong to wear.

Rawai Village Phuket

Sea Gypsies have made their permanent home in Rawai and numerous other adjacent communities. The majority of Sea Gypsies’ income comes from fishing and pearl diving. These people still adhere to strict cultural norms and have only lately embraced modern conveniences like electricity. They practice an indigenous animist faith unique to themselves. The Floating Festival, held in June and November, involves the launching of boats in an effort to chase away bad spirits.

Rawai is not as well-known among tourists as other parts of Phuket. Because of this, it’s one of the greatest sites in Thailand to get a true taste of the country’s vibrant cultural heritage. Taking a songthaew, a sort of vehicle that serves as a bus or cab in Thailand, is the most usual method to get to this area. Since the village’s attractions are scattered out, having your own vehicle is a huge convenience. Hiring a scooter is the most convenient option. Plenty of dining options and interesting sights await you here as well.

Watt Chalong Phuket

Wat Chalong is widely regarded as one of the most impressive and well-known Buddhist temples in all of Thailand. Wat Chalong is a significant place of prayer for the local community, and for tourists from across the world, it is a gateway to learning about Buddhism. The ancient hall of the temple is home to the stunning and massive Buddhist sculptures known as Poh Than Jo Wat. The temple is also home to a statue of an old man named Ta Khee- lek, who became renowned in his native Thailand after consulting the statue of Poh Than Jo Wat and going on to win a number of lottery jackpots. In addition to the impressive architecture, there is also a charming collection of around a dozen stores offering a wide variety of trinkets and other items of interest to tourists.

Bang Pae waterfall Phuket

There are several stunning waterfalls in Phuket, but the Bang Pae waterfall is often considered the best. Khao Phra Thaeo National Park lies to the north of Phuket, on the island’s eastern shore. The trail to the waterfall follows beside the stream, so there are plenty of beautiful spots to rest along the way. The stream’s shallow depth makes it ideal for kids to play in. Several dining options may be found outside the main gates, near the parking lot, and around the lake.A 33-foot-tall waterfall plunging into the heart of the forest is an absolutely magnificent sight. There is a little pond where tourists may cool down in the waterfalls, which are set against the vivid background of the lush green forest.

Phuket tours will take you to James Bond island , among other destinations

Alright, so if you’re reading this page, you are just as confused as I was about booking Phuket tours. There’s so much information on the internet and so many websites where you can book tours online. But if you dig deeper, you’ll learn that the best deals are if you book trips in person, or through this online website called Klook .

But wait a minute,

  • Which tour operator should I choose for my Phuket tours?
  • How do I book my Phuket tours?
  • What should I do to avoid getting ripped off?
  • How do I know if the Phuket tour I booked will be safe?
  • Should I book my tour online or in person?

And a million other questions that will come to mind when you start planning your Phuket trip. I get it, I understand it. I was so perplexed and a bit anxiety-ridden and experienced decision paralysis thanks to the endless choices when I was planning our Phuket trip too. Which is why I wrote this guide to help you with your trip!

Should I book my Phuket tours in person?

If you’re like me, and you want a stress-free vacation where everything is preplanned, booking tours during your vacation is not the ideal scenario. And possibly viewed as the worst use of precious vacation time. But, there are benefits to booking your excursion while in Phuket.

Note: I travelled to Phuket during the low season (that was intentional) and scored a lot of good deals. You might want to consider booking things in advance if you are travelling during the high season .

It’s cheaper, by at least 50%

Yeah, all the prices you see online? Well, the same tour will cost 50% in person at most travel kiosks. I don’t know why but it just works that way. The one exception where I’ve seen competitive prices online is if you book through Klook , where some of the excursions are the same price as what I saw while in Phuket. For example, I did the James Bond Island tour and paid 2,700 baht for two people (about CAD 105 or USD 81 for two). Klook has a similar tour for $45 USD . If you decide to book online, make sure research about the tour operator’s safety standards before you book!

Booking in person gives you flexibility

You can book tours as late as 6 pm the day before the trip departs. Obviously, there’s a risk that the tours might be full, but the benefit is that you can plan around avoiding lousy weather. Weather is significant to consider, especially if you are visiting Phuket during the rainy season as I did . After all, do you think you’ll enjoy your island hopping tour if it’s raining like a madman outside?

In our case, we thought we’d do two full-day tours but decided to book the second tour after we finished the first one. We realized after our James Bond tour that one sea excursion was enough for us and didn’t proceed with the second tour. Booking our tour in Phuket gave us that flexibility.

How to shop for Phuket tours in person?

The paradox of choice is dizzying!

Ok, so once you’ve landed in Phuket, you’ll notice a ton of tour desks in the city. The first encounter will likely be in your hotel lobby, with a gazillion brochures for you to choose. You’ll also start to feel nauseated with the infinite amount of choices when it comes to tours. For example, different tour groups will have the same itinerary with varying types of boats. Or, there will be itineraries that are almost identical, except one or two activities are swapped out. Are you pulling your hair yet? The paradox of choice becomes very obvious when shopping for tours, and making a decision will be difficult.

You’ll then step outside and see street vendors every few meters selling the same tours as you saw in your hotel. The only difference is that street vendors will be cheaper than the hotel prices by about 100-200 baht. It’s also easier to negotiate prices with street vendors if you are booking more than one tour.

How do these travel kiosks work and why are there so many?

How To Book Phuket Tours And Have An Amazing Experience | There are tons of things to do in Phuket, and looking at which tours to book can be a headache. Take a short walk down the street, and you’ll find tons of kiosks selling travel tours

You’ll understand what I mean when you arrive in Phuket. There are so many tour stands; they are a dime a dozen, and it’s confusing how they operate. I suspect that each kiosk is independently owned and they make arrangements with the tour company on your behalf on the spot.

You might save money by booking the tours at these kiosks, but the customer service will not be there. The problem I have with these booths is that these stands are random and located in the middle of the street. So once you book your ticket, you’re on your own. You can try and ask for the vendor’s number, but even then, there’s a considerable chance that they won’t take your call to help you (this happened to me when I booked a minibus transfer in Ao Nang).

What happens when I book Phuket tours in person?

Transactions in Thailand can be entirely different than what you’re used to back home. This thought might not cross your mind until you’re ready to pay and you have no idea what to expect.

Case in point: My credit card company was very confused about how a kiosk had charged my card three times but wouldn’t provide the service.

  • You find a travel kiosk you trust, and you look at all the pamphlets
  • You tell the seller which tour you want to book
  • He or she will make this ominous “phone call” to check if there’s space
  • The seller will then provide hotel information to the tour company to arrange for transportation
  • You then pay for the service. Usually, cash is the preferred payment, but some (very rare!) booths will take credit card. It often comes with a 3% credit card transaction fee
  • You are given a receipt and wait for a bus to pick you up on the day of the tour

What happens if something goes wrong? Who do you call? Is there a contact person?

Ah, so here is an important question you need to ask yourself. Once you walk away from the stand, there isn’t much of a relationship between you and the seller. After all, they already have your money, so they’re not in an obligation to help you if things go wrong. They won’t communicate with you if the bus comes late, or worse yet if there was a misunderstanding and the tour bus never comes to pick you up!

What do you do? Who are you going to call? Are you going to walk down the street to inquire about what’s happening and why you haven’t been picked up yet? And if something goes wrong, how do you even hold these people accountable? You can’t leave a review online, and they aren’t really associated with any company.

This reason is why I recommend booking your tour through a reputable hotel. If you find that you don’t want to book through your hotel, then consider finding another reliable hotel nearby.

Our experience with exceptional customer service for Phuket tours

We stayed at Best Western Patong beach for part of our stay in Phuket and booked our tour through this hotel

It took us a long time to decide on which tour operator and tour to book. After speaking to a few vendors, we decided to book through our hotel.

We found Siriwan, the seller to be very trustworthy and attentive to our needs. We had asked other kiosks about safety, tour information and quality of service but no one gave us an honest answer. Siriwan was the only person who was able to respond to our questions. While her prices were higher than the vendors outside the hotel, her service was exceptional. For example, on the day of the tour, she made sure to communicate with us that the driver was running late. When the driver finally arrived, she made sure we got into the right vehicle. She also gave us her phone number in case we needed any help from her. This woman is so dedicated to her job that she works 13-hour days, to ensure that she’s there for her customers when they leave and come back to the hotel.

Of course, on the night of the tour, I got super sick and couldn’t sleep all night

I was so ill that I contemplated cancelling my trip because it was that bad. But, being the person that I am, I decided to suck it up anyways and figured I could just sleep on the boat if I felt ill.

Well, let me tell you, long days out in the sun + lack of sleep + sickness + boat trip don’t go very well together. But somehow I survived.

As I got off the minibus, I saw Siriwan run towards me with a concerned look on her face yelling “Miss Nancy, Miss Nancy, are you ok?” Our minibus brought us back to the hotel 30 minutes later than usual, and she was worried that something happened to me. She told me later that she saw how pale I was in the morning and was super concerned about me all day!

Things to consider before booking your Phuket tours

Preparation will make your decision making easier (good thing you’re reading this guide!) and so I’ve written a list of questions to help you decide while in Phuket. Keep in mind the questions below are for island day tours and land tours as well.

What activities do you want to do?

How To Book Phuket Tours And Have An Amazing Experience | There are tons of things to do in Phuket, and looking at which tours to book can be a headache. Kayaking on the James Bond Island tour where the boat captain did all the rowing

The list of activities is endless on Phuket. Let me give you a few ideas:

  • Phuket city day trip
  • Phuket to Phi Phi island tour
  • James Bond Island tour
  • Safari tours
  • Snorkelling
  • Island hopping tours
  • Rafting tours

Most tours include a stop or two for kayaking in and around the caves and tiny islands

What kind of boat do you want to take on the tour?

Types of boats are something to consider, especially if you’re booking the island hopping tours. That’s because there are so many different types of vessels.

Bigger boats mean more space but more tourists on the boat

Long tail boats

Long tail boats have large engines with propellers in the waters, hence the name. These boats are not a good idea when you’re in open water because they’re so small. In fact, you’ll likely transfer from a speedboat to a long tail boat when you get closer to the islands because some passages are too narrow for speedboats and cruise boats to navigate. Note that these boats tend to be noisier than the speedboat and cruise boats thanks to the engines.

These boats are the most ideal for island hopping tours.

The interior from the speedboat during the James Bond Island tour

Cruise boats

The boats are bigger and offer a more comfortable ride. It’s ideal especially for those who get seasick. The only downside is that bigger boats mean more people, so the experience at sea isn’t as intimate as the speedboats. Cruise boats also have a more comfortable indoor space to shelter from the sun.

How is safety taken into consideration?

Safety was a big big deal for us because of all the horror stories we heard about boats in Asia. Safety is something you want to consider. The basic things are:

  • Are the boats well maintained?
  • Do they have enough working life jackets on the boat within easy access to the guests?
  • Will they cancel the tour if the weather is terrible?

Feeling safe with a life jacket on board the cruise boat

It’s best to find these answers through research and reading reviews about the tour company. If you ask the travel kiosks, they might tell you anything you want to hear just to get you to book with them.

How much will it cost?

While I don’t recommend booking the cheapest option, you still want to do some research to ensure you’re getting a good deal. The last thing you want to do is overpay for the same service worth half the price.

Which company do I go to book my Phuket tours?

This question is a tricky one, and it’s best to do your research before you arrive in Phuket. We did not have a clue on which tour group we wanted to book with and ended up researching while in Phuket. Not the most ideal way to spend your vacation, especially if you have limited time. We lucked out with being super confused and overwhelmed in Phuket because we were staying in Phuket for an extra long time during our year of travel .

If you’re island hopping, is it better to do your excursion in Phuket or on another island?

This question is essential to consider, mainly because you will save on travel time. For instance, we were thinking about visiting Phi Phi from Phuket but then realized that since we will be in Ao Nang, going to Phi Phi from Ao Nang is the better option. Phi Phi island from Phuket is two hours one way, whereas leaving from Krabi would have been a 90-minute journey.

Cheap Phuket tours are not always the best option. Safety should be your number one priority!

The English speaking tour guide that made it mandatory for everyone to wear a lifejacket while on the boat

Especially when you’re doing the day tours visiting islands. You are in open water, and you’re subjected to crazy waves in the sea. Booking with a provider who cares about your safety should be your number one priority, not the price! Trust me when I say this, the safety standards in Thailand aren’t the same compared to western countries, so the onus is on you to watch out for your safety. Do you want to be on a crowded boat, or on boats that are not well maintained? Or do you want to deal with boats who don’t have enough life jackets? Or maybe they do have enough life jackets, but they are all tied together so that in the event of an emergency, it might take you a few minutes to untie them?

You also want to go with companies who are willing to cancel the tour if the weather is terrible instead of going ahead in lousy weather. There are far too many stories of boats going in open waters with terrible weather, putting people’s lives in danger. Or they will cram as many people as possible on the ship, making the tour an unenjoyable experience. The reason why this happens because tour operators usually refund 100% of your money when there’s bad weather. That means lost revenue!

Phuket tour prices

Based on what I’ve seen, prices for tours range from 800 baht to 4,000 baht. Day tours to the islands are usually within the 3,000-4,000 baht range for typical island day tours. But wait, they will always tell you about a “promotion” which can be around 50-60% off the quoted price on the pamphlet, especially during rainy season. If you book more than two tours with them, they will usually give you an extra discount!

Hi Nancy, Your blog post is heaven sent, it has answered or more so clarified a lot of my doubts. I wanted to know if you did stay at the Best western hotel and is that how you found the tour operator? Did he/she provide a refund had the trip been cancelled? Do you have any recommendations on the markets and old Phuket Town? Thanks 🙂

August 27, 2018 at 11:16 pm

Hi Rosanna,

I am so glad to hear that this post helped you 🙂

To answer your questions, – Yes, I stayed at Best Western, that is how I found the tour operator. However, I moved hotels at some point and still came back to book with the tour operator at Best Western – Based on the conversations I had with the different tour operators, refunds are provided if the trip is cancelled. However, some tour operators are hesitant to cancel despite unsafe weather conditions because they will lose money! It’s best to research for reviews on the tour operators. – I don’t have any recommendations but would suggest that you find a high end/reputable/international hotel to book your tours. Your hotel most likely has a tour operator too so you might want to check there first. The reason being is because if something goes wrong, you have someone to help remediate the situation! Case in point: I booked bus tickets through a tour kiosk in Ao Nang Krabi . All was good until they charged my credit card for the one transaction THREE TIMES and then denied me service. I couldn’t read Thai, so I had no idea what the message was saying on the POS terminal, and I think the lady was confused because she didn’t seem familiar with POS terminals. I suspect that there was an error message because she had no paper for the machine! Anyway, it was a nightmare to call and explain the situation to my credit card company (they couldn’t understand why I put in my pin number three times and then be denied service!) and the lady who gave me her cell number for problems? Well, she never answered her cell phone…

Anyway, I hope these answers help you with the trip planning to Phuket! Let me know if you have further questions 🙂

Hi Nancy, By what time do island tours start? Are they any that start by afternoon ? Can I go by late morning and book island tours on the spot and just go that start by noon?

August 9, 2019 at 10:14 pm

The tours start with a hotel pick up, which can happen as early as 8 am. You can probably book a tour for the following day but I’m not sure if you’ll be able to book same day tours since they seem to usually last all day. Hope it all works out and let me know how it went!

August 9, 2019 at 6:35 pm

Hi Nancy, I’m arriving at Phuket by 8 at night. Can I get the island tours the next day on spot and just start ? Are there any island tours that start by afternoon? Like the next day I go to any kiosk and if I like a tour I just hope on ?

August 9, 2019 at 10:12 pm

I highly doubt that will work as the kiosk are almost like marketers for the actual tour. They usually take payment and book the tours while the actual tour company executes the tours. If you book a tour the next day, you can probably get on a tour the following day if there is space and if you book before a certain time (i.e. like 6 pm)

Best time to Visit Phuket

Phuket offers an exotic beach life and hence it is highly recommended to make a Phuket trip during the summer months. There could be no better combination other than enjoying the best beach life during the summer months for those who love to travel. However, there could be no one best time to visit. It highly depends on many factors like your purpose of visit, the places and activities you have chosen and the budget you intend to spend. Read through to figure out your best time to visit Phuket.

Peak season - Summer in Phuket

Thailand by itself has a tropical climate and hence this place is considerably warm throughout the year. The months of July, August and December are the peak seasons to visit Phuket. July and August have more warm weather suitable for a long craved beach life while December sounds synonymous to festive attracting more tourists. The temperature on this island during these months is around 28 to 30 degree Celsius. The airfare and prices of the hotels are higher during peak season. Hence it is highly recommended to pre book your flights and stay. Make sure to book the Phuket Thailand vacation packages all inclusive with airfare to avoid any hassles.

Shoulder season - Phuket in Spring and Autumn

The advantage of visiting any destination during the shoulder season is being able to enjoy its best climate while being able to save money. The months of February, May, June, October and November are the shoulder tourist seasons. The temperature in Phuket during the shoulder season is around 25 to 28 degree celsius. You will be able to witness lesser crowds. The streets of Phuket will be in the preparatory phase of celebration during November. Also, you will be able to skip queues and crowds easily. On top of that, the best discounts on airfare and hotels makes your Phuket honeymoon package and Phuket family holiday package one of the most desirable seasons for being on a budget friendly holiday.

Low season - Phuket in winter

The starting months of the year from January to March is regarded as the low season in Phuket. After Christmas and New year, this island is drenched in the shower from heaven. All you need is to pack right. The airfare and the hotel prices are very low and hence you will have the advantage to enjoy a budget Phuket tour . Since Thailand is a tropical destination, Phuket experiences an average temperature of around 25 degree celsius.

How to Reach Phuket

The best way to reach Phuket from India is by air. There are several direct and connecting flights between India and Phuket. Most of the metropolitan cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, etc. offer flights to Phuket. For example, you can take a direct flight from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) to reach Phuket International Airport (HKT) in four and a half hours. Alternatively, you can also take a connecting flight to reach Phuket via Bangkok. But taking a direct flight is the most convenient and ideal choice. The average flight fare from India to Phuket would be around 20,000 INR, and it can vary depending on the airline and time of booking. Some of the popular airlines that operate between these destinations include Indigo, FirstGo, SpiceJet, Thai Airways, Air Asia, VietJet Air, and Malaysian Airways. Out of these, IndiGo offer the lowest airline tickets to Phuket.

There is no direct bus service available from India to Thailand. However, you can fly to Singapore Changi Airport and then take a bus to Phuket. Overall, from Singapore, it would take around 20 hours to reach Phuket. After arriving in Singapore, take a bus to Larkin Bus Terminal in Johor, Malaysia. Then from there, take a bus to Hat Yai Station, which takes around 12 hours, and then transfer to another bus from Hat Yai to reach Phuket directly. However, by bus from Singapore to Phuket may be the longest route, but it is relatively cheaper than flying from India to Phuket.

Travelling by sea to Phuket is an exciting and one-of-a-kind adventure. Firstly, take a direct flight from India to reach Singapore, then take a ferry from Singapore’s Kusu Island to Marina South Pier, which takes around 30 minutes to reach. And then take a bus from Fullerton Square to Kuala Perlis. After that, it would take you nine hours to go by ferry from Kuala Perlis to Rassada Pier in Phuket via Langkawi.

From Where to Book Your Phuket Tours to the All Important Travel Insurance in Thailand

Is it cheaper to book tours when I set foot on Phuket Island? Should I book Phuket tours in advance?

If you’ve asked both questions then you are essentially wondering what’s the best way to book daily tours in Phuket, Thailand.

By the time you’re finished reading this blog post, you’re going to have clear answers to booking a tour before or after you arrive on Phuket Island. Plus everything else in between, including tour travel insurance why you should not book tours with local Thai tour agencies using your debit cards.

Unless you’ve got yourself a fancy yacht courtesy of a generous trust fund or a Bond villain-style speed boat parked somewhere along Thailand’s Andaman Sea, you’re going to have to join a tour group to explore the beautiful islands and beaches of Phuket (ภูเก็ต pronounced Poo-ket ) .

Small private wooden motor boats in Phuket tours

Don’t Own a Boat? No Problem.

You will learn where to go find the best prices for tours on Phuket Island. Also, the best online travel agencies to reserve island hopping tours in advance. Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group of best friends and family, my Phuket travel guide will ensure you’ll find the best tour prices.

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand. With 32 smaller islands which requires hiring a boat or joining a tour group for island excursions. You can’t do it alone. So you will need local Thai guides and hired transportation.

Also in this post, I’m going to point out the benefits of booking tours online versus booking tours on Phuket island. I’m sure you’re eager to find out which is better.

Safety is Important These Days for Touring the Islands of Phuket

No one wants to get into accidents let alone think about it. I’ll cover what’s included in Phuket’s tour operators’ insurance coverage. This is important to know when you’re frolicking on the beach and cross paths with monkeys in a bad mood. And sometimes the causes of accidents aren’t entirely the fault of tourists alone.

Thai tour operators can be accident-prone as well. I’ll touch base on insurance coverage provided by Thai tour agencies and what to expect below.

Benefits of Joining a Phuket Island Tour

A visit to Thailand’s famous Phuket island is on most tourists’ must-do list. Joining an island and beach hopping tour is the best and most convenient way to explore Phuket and all of its beautiful surroundings.

There are plenty of perks for joining tours:

  • A driver picks you up from your hotel and drops you back off when the tour is over.
  • Knowledgeable English-speaking guides are on hand.
  • Lunch and refreshments are included in the price. Beers are extra.
  • Admission fees to islands are included as they are considered national parks. However, you should double-check trip descriptions to be sure.
  • Snorkel gear and life jackets are loaned out.

Better to bring your own snorkel gear. Because the equipments provided are reused repeatedly. Gross!

Tour agency inside a hotel on Phuket island

Like most things in life you get what you pay for. There are private yachts to the Phi Phi Islands you can hire outright for the day with champagne and caviar served. But you’ll be paying out of your butt hole for that privilege.

I’m like most folks. I’m looking for the best valued tour in Phuket. I don’t want a tour that is too cheap yet provides an amazing value and experience. Which is a polite way to say I want a lot. But I want to pay a little. And that’s okay.

Because in this little Phuket tour guide, I’ll show you where to book that dream tour to the Phi Phi Islands and where you shouldn’t be booking your overall Phuket tours to save money.

You’ll specifically know which areas are best to book tours on Phuket island after arriving.

But first, here’s a little nifty tip from your buddy the Wayfaring Soul:

Wayfaring Soul Tip #1901 for Booking Phuket Tours “The bigger the boat, the cheaper the tour price. The smaller with less people and faster the boat, the more it’ll cost.”

Speed boats are better… but it’ll cost more

Smaller speed boats provide specialized tour services. It can carry approximately 15 passengers, not including crew. But they cost more. Speed boats are nimble enough to navigate to certain parts of the islands that are quieter and less frequented. Less people the better and that’s the way I like it. So I typically book Phuket speed boat island hopping tours. The cost is worthwhile.

Larger ferry boats are okay… and it’s cheaper

Ferry boats fit more passengers but don’t have much flexibility because they can’t pass through shallow waters. And also certain secluded locations due to the size of the boat.

However, because more people are sharing the boat the cost per passenger is lower. There are just too many people on these boats, approximately fifty onboard. I’ve only been on once and never again.

My friends have been on larger tour boats though and they tell me it’s not that bad though. So it all comes down to personal preference.

And now, let’s get to the big question you’ve been asking.

Tours boats waiting on a beach

“Booking a Tour in Phuket After Arriving  VS. Booking Phuket Tours Online” – Which is Better?

This is a question I’m asked often. Who wants to arrive in Phuket only to find out that the tour you wish to join is completely sold out?

Everyone wants the best tour for the best price. No one wants to overpay. More importantly, who wants a crappy Phuket tour experience?

This will happen if you book tours in all the wrong places. Booking day trips in Phuket within your own home country’s travel agency is a classic mistake. There are only two things to think about:

  • How Much Time You’ve Got Before Arriving in Phuket?
  • How Many Persons Are Traveling Within Your Group?

Here are your answers. Plus also my best tips on where you should book your tours and more examples of where you shouldn’t .

Time – You’ll Have Plenty of it to Join a Tour in Phuket

If you’re like me, a serial procrastinator, you’ll be happy to know there are plenty of opportunities to purchase jungle trekking, snorkeling, or scuba activities and island hopping packages right on the main island of Phuket.

There are as many tour sellers as there are 7-Elevens in Phuket. If you don’t know what I’m talking about you’ll see when you get there.

So it’s not necessary to purchase day trip tours outside of Thailand. Nor book Phuket tours online in advance.

But there is an exception as to why you should book Phuket tours online before arriving .

I’ll get into that exception later. But if you can’t wait, click here .

Speedboats are popular way to go island hopping in Phuket

Believe me, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to buy tour packages if you haven’t done so yet. The island is full of tour agencies, tour agents, tour kiosks, and tour touts.

The nice Thai lady running a laundry shop could also hook you up with a phone call.

Whether you want it or not airport taxi drivers will try to sign you up for a jungle trekking tour. Even though you are deathly scared of large hairy spiders like yours truly.

Unscrupulous locals train monkeys to shake tourists down if they don’t buy tours from them. Stray dogs are tattooed with tour advertisements. You can even buy tours from elderly Thai fruit vendors. Okay, so I’m kidding about the last three. But you get my point.

Here’s another scenario. Say you arrived in the cities of Bangkok or Chiang Mai first.

And it’s the high season (November to April). You’re concerned that all the island tour operators are fully booked. So you decide to book a tour through the hotel’s on-site tour agency.

Phuket Island Map

Never Book Phuket Tours Inside Hotels

That action will end up costing you at least 20% to 35% more compared to reserving that same tour on Phuket island. Hotel tour agencies in Bangkok don’t do it for free. And they shouldn’t as it’s a service they are providing. All hotels in Bangkok or any other tour vendors in Thailand outside of Phuket will charge extra.

I don’t even recommend purchasing day trip tours inside Phuket International Airport. Because renting a location inside an airport is expensive. In turn, tour operators pass some of the cost to you.

But we are savvy travelers, right? Don’t fret, book your tours on Phuket because you’ve got plenty of time to save yourself some money for a frosty piná colada.

Now that you know where not to book  tours in Phuket, I’m going to show you where you should go for the best Phuket tour rates …

For the Best Tour Prices in Phuket, Head to Patong Beach

So I’ve already established that it’s best to purchase your tours right on the island of Phuket. To be specific, head to the Patong Beach area because there are so many tour operators all selling the same tours. But at slightly different prices. Chances are you’re probably staying at a hotel in the Patong Beach area anyway. Or at least be visiting Patong Beach for its nightlife .

The reason why you can get better prices from tour operators on Patong Beach is because that’s the area where most tourists are wandering around. And tour agencies in that area try to be as price competitive as possible to get your Baht into their grubby hands.

Patong Beach Road Phuket

Where is Patong Beach?

Patong Beach is a seaside resort on the western coast of Phuket. The area is abuzz with Phuket’s nightlife including a smallish red light district.

Even then, Patong is family-friendly. With many restaurants serving Western food and seafood restaurants. Chances are, you’re going to visit Patong Beach at least once on your Phuket vacation. I guarantee it.

Patong Beach is the single best location in Phuket to find tours on arrival.

Here’s What to Look for at a Phuket Tour Agency.

  • Look for a Phuket tour agency with a business name clearly marked , with phone numbers.
  • I recommend dealing with a dedicated tour agency only . I typically stay clear of tour agencies that double as a laundry shop or other businesses unrelated to tourism.
  • Make sure a Thailand Tourism License (TAT) is displayed. It looks like the image below but with a license number.

TAT License

Check Around for the Best Tour Prices

I recommend speaking with tour agencies on the street level of Patong Beach. I also recommend checking prices with at least 3 different tour agencies . You’re more than welcome to check more than that if you have the time.

Me, I prefer to spend it under a beach umbrella with soft warm sand caressing my feet. While cradling a nice frosty boozy piná colada. I just love those cute little drink umbrellas.

Price comparisons from three different travel agencies along Patong Beach will give you a general idea of prices for tour activities during your visit.

How much can you save from checking around?

It’s possible that you can save a few hundred Baht or more, depending on the season, time of day, or whether or not a particular tour agency has reached a quota. The discounts can add up if you’re traveling in a group. It’s possible to ask for group discounts.

Matter of fact, ask for discounts . But be polite about it. Do not expect a deep discount. If they can’t sell to you, trust me, they’ll find somebody else to purchase a tour.

Use Your Common Sense

Whatever you do, do not book a Phuket tour from a local tour agency offering an incredible itinerary at a too-good-to-be-true price.

While doing your price research along Patong Beach you will eventually figure out the average cost. Finding anything unrealistically cheaper than the rest should set off alarms in your brain.

If you see a Phuket tour more than half off of what everyone else is charging you’re at a dodgy unlicensed business. No questions about it. They probably don’t have your safety in mind nor care whether or not you have a good experience.

Remember what your mother told you about talking to strangers…

Also not a good idea to have a tour tout approach you out of the middle of nowhere. These guys, girls, or ladyboys may not work directly with the tour agency. But rather as middlemen so they get a commission when you book which you end up paying for their lunch. Simply put, don’t speak to strangers who approach you with a fist full of tour pamphlets.

Bangla Road is also a good area to look for Phuket Tours

Aside from Patong Beach, I also recommend searching for Phuket island hopping tours along Bangla Road where you’ll find lots of tour agencies.

Bangla Road is a major street on Phuket Island that runs parallel to Patong Beach. You’ll find it with no problems.

Tour agencies in Phuket Patong Beach

Here’s When to Book Tours in Advance Online

Now let’s talk about booking Phuket tours online . It’s not more expensive than booking on the island itself. In some instances, during low travel season, it’s about the same price. How that happened I have no clue.

If you’re traveling with just a few people go ahead and book the tour upon arriving on the island.

However, I highly recommend booking tours in advance online for bigger groups.

Book that Phuket Tour Online When You’re Traveling with a Bunch of Friends

book phuket tours

So here’s the exception I mentioned before. If you’ve got a bunch of friends traveling with you to Phuket then I advise booking Phuket tours online in advance .

Like anything these days on the inter-web you can purchase Phuket day trips at home in the comforts of your underwear. Fuzzy pink bunny slippers are optional.

Online Phuket tour prices are priced slightly higher. I’ve never found them to be cheaper than booking a tour on-site at Patong Beach and Bangla Road . However, as I mentioned prices could be the same in some instances.

The biggest benefit of booking a tour online in advance is that there’s enough space for you and all your friends to chill out on the same boat. Because nothing drags down a vacation mood more than getting separated from your BFFs.

For me, I normally book tours ahead of time when I’m with at least five friends. If you’re popular and have even more friends you might even get your own boat.

Some tours are more popular than others. Obviously, the best tours get picked up and run out of space the quickest.

This is another reason why it’s a good idea to reserve that tour online ahead of time.

In most instances, you can reserve now and pay later , or cancel within 24 hours’ notice , just like the popular tours around Phuket I listed below.

Book Tours Ahead of Time for These Best of Phuket Island Beach Tours

  • One-Day Tour to Phi Phi, Maya and Bamboo Island – This trip is designed to pack in the Phuket travel experience of your dreams. As I recommended you’ll travel via speedboat to Koh Phi Phi where you can relax, swim along coral reefs, and possibly fend off monkeys trying to steal from you as you snap selfies. You’ll be visiting four islands on this tour package. Check the price and read reviews for this tour on Viator.com
  • Similian Islands – If you want to spend more time in the water snorkeling instead of fighting off monkeys on a beautiful picturesque island then a tour of the Similian Islands you will enjoy. Similan Islands has some of the best coral reefs and diverse marine life in the Andaman Sea. Check the price and read reviews for this tour on Viator.com
  • Raya Island – Imagine a long stretch of soft white sandy beach with crystal blue waters. And no pesky monkeys. That’s what you’ll find on Raya Noi. You’ll definitely enjoy a stop at Banana Bay for snorkeling. Check the price and read reviews for this tour on Viator.com .

Here’s Another Reason to Book Online Ahead of Time

Phuket Simon Cabaret Show

Every time my friends come to visit Phuket for their very first trip, I always recommend checking out Simon Cabaret Phuket  for a fun night out. But if you want the good VIP seats you need to book in advance. This all ladyboy cast cabaret is very famous in Phuket and a super popular tourist attraction.

Oh, and another reason why you want to book ahead of time for Phuket Simon Cabaret Show is you won’t get separated from your friends and have a table to sit together.

Trazy.com and Viator.com Are Some of the Best Online Travel Agencies for Phuket Tours

There are many reputable online travel tour operators selling all kinds of tours in Phuket from, island hopping, snorkeling, sunrise tours, jungle trekking and yes even tickets to Phuket Simon Cabaret Show.

I like online tour operators like Viator.com, you check out an example of their James Bond Island tour itinerary.

Speed boat carrying passengers to Andaman Restaurant in Phuket

Another online travel agency I recommend is Trazy.com which has a highly reviewed tour of Phuket’s 1 Day Similan Island Tour .

Both are reputable online tour operators in Phuket and the major reason why I recommend them is if there’s a problem you know how to find them. For instance if you’re back home and you want to complain about something you can write to them, leave a review or a feedback. Plus, they speak English.

Versus booking a tour through a local tour operator you may not want to pay for international calls or have some sort of communication problem.

Not that I’m saying local Thai tour operators across the scale are bad. Just saying things happen and if it did, don’t you want to be able to speak to someone you can easily communicate with?

Cancellation policy from a tour on Viator.com, please check all tour cancellation policies as each may be different…

However a recent Tragedy in Phuket Has Swayed Me to Recommend Booking Tours Online

Due to a recent tragedy in July 2018 which resulted in the deaths of 41 Chinese citizens returning from an island tour in Phuket, I can’t stress enough to be careful about how you choose your tours in Phuket.

I believe that companies like Viator.com and Trazy.com are highly reputable online travel agencies that are more responsible for the safety of their customers.

Cancellations and Refunds – Pay Tours With Credit Cards (Not Debit Cards)

There are a lot of reasons why tour agencies cancel an outing. And reasons why you need to cancel a tour too. Rough weather is a big reason why operators will cancel a day’s worth of tours for safety precautions.

Your husband had some bad sushi a few days before arriving in Phuket. And don’t want him to blow chunks on the speed boat. That would be one reason why you as a customer need to cancel and request a refund.

Bad weather coming in Phuket

Why should you pay with a credit card? There are several reasons but one example is if there’s a cancellation due to weather. If you paid in cash but have no time to pick up the refund afterwards then it’s easier to get the money refunded back to your credit card.

However, a local Thai tour operator in Phuket might add a 3% surcharge for paying with a credit card. Which is not a big deal.

Though is another reason why I recommend booking a tour online with the web travel agencies I mentioned.

Also, if there’s a problem, say if you think you’ve dealt with a shifty tour operator you can always contact the credit card issuer to put a hold on the charge. And have the credit card company investigate and sort things out.

Never pay for tours with a debit card. I don’t want to get off topic so if you want to know the reasons why check this article here .

Lunch on the Tour

If you’re booking a full-day tour package it will include lunch. Maybe even a light breakfast in the morning. Most half-day tours include lunch also.

Try and stay away from tours where for lunch they stick you inside a large shared restaurant.

Here’s an example of why from my last Phuket island tour:

Recently, a large restaurant was made somewhere off the island near Phuket where all the surrounding tour agencies shuffle in hungry tourists and serve lunch.

There are restrooms and snack shops as well, which is all good.

Andaman Seafood Restaurant

There were 10 to 12 tour mates at a table. Everyone was quiet as we stared at the dishes that were presented to us. Awkwardly silent I must add. Like everyone was thinking the same thing in unison.

Where’s the nearest McDonalds? We’ll swim through shark-infested waters if we must for some McNuggets and fries!

We were served cold french fries. Some tepid water with root vegetables and chicken (me thinks) that’s supposed to be soup de jour.

Did we have sweet and sour pork? Or was it chicken? There were a few other Thai dishes but let’s not get into that.

Was there a chance our tour group’s lunch was made by a cadre of less experienced cooks?

While the real chef was out on the back pier enjoying his afternoon siesta with an icy cold beer. Possibly…

Andaman Seafood Restaurant Phuket

So what’s the lesson here kids?   Ask your tour operator if they provide tours where lunch is served on the beach. Search around until you find an itinerary somewhere specifically stating where you’ll be having lunch.

Remember , all tours are usually priced about the same as advertised by other Phuket tour operators. So why would you want to pay for a crappy lunch and location when you can get something better? For roughly around the same price.

Because I have joined tours where you can enjoy a lunch buffet on a nice sandy beach with a view. Believe me, it’s a whole lot better than eating at a packed restaurant and looking at the faces of disappointed tour mates.

The Ultimate Goal is to have the Best Phuket Island Tour Experience

For example, here’s an itinerary from Viator.com showing their list of pit stops along with other helpful info about their Phi Phi Island Adventure Tour .

Too lazy to check the link? Here’s an excerpt from that tour itinerary:

“Then, cruise to the white beaches of Bamboo Island. Go ashore for a delicious buffet lunch at an island hotel, and enjoy free time to relax on the beach and swim.” – From Viator, Phi Phi Island Tour

Insurance on Phuket Tours – Bad Things Can Happen

Sure, we don’t want bad things to happen. But it’s still a good idea to have some accident insurance coverage. Especially if you’re planning on zip lining up in the air and short trekking through jungles filled with rabid monkeys in heat.

All licensed tour operators in Thailand are required to carry insurance for tourists under their charge. Keep in mind, that some tour agencies may charge a little bit extra for insurance to cover children.

book phuket tours

Here’s a look at one of Trazy.com’s Zipline experiences in Phuket . It clearly states what’s included in the price, including insurance.

By Law, Local Thai Tour Operators Must Provide Insurance Coverage

As indicated in this Bangkok Post article , in case of an accident involving tourists, local tour operators are required to cover up to 500,000THB ($16,500USD) for injury.

In the instance of death, a tourist’s estate receives 1,000,000THB ($33,000USD) per tourist. All licensed tour operators in Thailand must have insurance as dictated by the Tourists Authority Thailand (TAT).

Phuket Island Tour Operators with Insurance

  • Nutticha Marine Co., LTD – They have a good selection of on and off-island itineraries. Their full-day Phi Phi, Maya, and Khai Island tour provides a good experience and is recommended.
  • Flying Hanuman – If zip-lining through the air while screaming like a maniac does it for you then check out this tour operator. And yes they have insurance.
  • Trazy.com – This online travel tour agency provides tours in many countries but has a good selection of Phuket tours at reasonable rates.

book phuket tours

When searching for local tour operators in Phuket, if you see one that you are interested in but don’t see them listing insurance you can always email them and ask if they provide any for peace of mind. Because if they are licensed tour agencies on the island they are required to provide it.

Because information changes from time to time, and if travel insurance is your concern on any tour excursions in Phuket please contact the tour operator and inquire about their company tour insurance policy.

Final Thoughts on Booking a Phuket Tour…

Booking tours in Phuket is usually smooth sailing (pun intended) as most tour operators on the island are doing their best to provide the best experience for their customers.

The locals depend on tourism because it’s very important to the island’s micro-economy.

book phuket tours

I’ve been to plenty of island tours in Phuket booking online and on the island and I have to say all were good fun. Local tour guides spoke English or one other language.

Most have a great sense of humor and fun conversations were had. The crews look out for the welfare of the passengers under their care and want everyone to have a good time.

6 Tips for Booking Tours in Phuket, Thailand

  • April through October is the monsoon season. Tours during these periods are cheaper. But be sure to have plenty of time in Phuket so you can rebook the next day in case of cancellations.
  • Patong Beach is the best area in Phuket to find the lowest rates on day trips in and around the island. Check and compare with at least 3 different tour agencies on Patong Beach for the best tour rates. Not far from Patong Beach is Bangla Road which is also a good alternative to find tour packages.
  • Never purchase Phuket tours inside a hotel lobby travel agency.
  • For a better experience book tours from well-established online travel agencies with reviews of itineraries.
  • Be sure to read up on tour itineraries, pit stops, what’s included, and what to expect during a tour. Some tour agencies include admission fees to islands and some don’t
  • Pay tours with your credit card to get refunds conveniently or dispute charges.

Now that you’ve learned that Patong Beach and Bangla Road on Phuket Island are the best areas to look for tours. As well as the importance of having insurance included are you ready for your awesome tour experience in Phuket?
