The Best Portable Dog Beds For Traveling Anywhere With Your Pup

They make packing so much easier ✨.

dog travel beds

Most dogs like to lounge — a lot. And that doesn’t stop when you take them traveling.

But since your dog’s normal bed isn’t exactly built for stuffing in a suitcase, you might be looking for something that’s a little more travel-friendly.

Luckily, there are a ton of travel dog beds on the market that are lightweight, waterproof, durable, compact and comfortable — making them the perfect spots for your pup to curl up while you’re out on the road. (Or even for hanging out in the yard!)

The Dodo rounded up the best travel dog beds on the internet so you can find the best one for your next trip with your pup.

  • Best travel dog bed overall: Chuckit! Travel Dog Bed
  • Best dog travel mat : TOYSBOOM Outdoor Dog Mat
  • Best folding dog bed : STOBOK Outdoor Dog Bed
  • Best dog sleeping bag : CHEERHUNTING Dog Sleeping Bag
  • Best dog travel bed for the car : Aidou Dog Car Seat
  • Best memory foam travel dog bed : Petmaker Travel Dog Bed
  • Best elevated travel dog bed : YEP HHO Large Elevated Folding Pet Bed

Why use a travel dog bed?

Travel dog beds are super handy since you can use them pretty much anytime you leave your house. They’re perfect for hanging out in the yard, taking your dog for a car ride, staying at a hotel, going camping or taking a hike.

They also make you a super polite houseguest since they can help keep your pet’s hairs contained to his bed.

In general, travel dog beds tend to be water resistant, portable and easy to clean, which makes them truly ideal for the outdoors and while traveling.

And the best part is that your dog’s normal bed can stay nice and clean at home, and your dog can still get super comfy when you’re out and about.

How to find the best travel dog bed

Since there are so many travel dog beds to choose from, you should try to tell the difference between a high-quality travel dog bed and one that’s not so great so you can find the best one for your pup.

When looking for a portable dog bed for traveling, be sure to consider the following details:

First and foremost, you want your travel dog bed to be pretty easy to carry around. Even if you think you’ll be keeping the dog bed in one spot, there’s a good chance you’ll end up wanting to bring it everywhere you take your dog.

Luckily, most travel dog beds are super portable (of course — it’s in the name!). They’re usually flat and can be either folded or rolled up into a more compact form. Some even come with a carrying case so you can tote your pup’s bed around, no problem.

Easy to clean

A travel dog bed that’s easy to clean will save you lots of time and hassle, especially if you plan on bringing it outdoors, like while camping or hiking.

Even if you only bring the travel dog bed in the car or a few hotel rooms, it’s nice to know you can give the dog bed a quick wash in case of any accidental messes (and keep it clean in between trips).

So when looking for a travel dog bed, make sure that it’s machine washable.

Purchasing a bed that’s waterproof (or at least water resistant) will definitely be a lifesaver when you’re on the road. So just in case there are any accidental spills, your pup’s bed will still be usable afterwards, and he won’t be stuck with a wet bed.

It’s especially important to purchase a waterproof bed if you plan on taking it camping with you. It could easily start raining, or the ground could be moist, which could definitely lead to an uncomfortably wet sleeping situation for your pup.

A travel bed with a nice layer of soft padding will go a long way when it comes to a good night’s rest for your pup. Since travel beds are meant to be compact, they’re not always comfy, so make sure the one you purchase will actually provide your dog with a pleasant place to sleep.

And if your dog is older, you might want to try an orthopedic travel dog bed (aka one made of memory foam), which can help give your dog’s joints support so he doesn’t suffer from aches and pains while on the road.

Fits the situation

Before deciding on a travel dog bed to buy, think about how you plan on using it first. This will help you find one that will actually meet your needs.

If you want to keep it in the car only, for example, consider getting your dog a booster car seat, which is basically like a travel dog bed but a lot safer for traveling in the car.

And if you plan on taking the dog bed on a camping trip, look for one that can roll up really small, comes with a carrying case, is lightweight, is totally waterproof and will keep your pup warm on cold nights. This will make it a lot easier to pack light for your outdoor adventure and ensure your pup stays comfortable and happy.

Best travel dog beds

dog travel bed

Bed size: 39 by 30 inches

Bed weight: 35.2 ounces

The travel dog bed from Chuckit! is a great option for a lot of reasons. It’s machine washable, water resistant, durable, comfortable and perfect for both small and large dogs. It’s made of a breathable fabric and comes with a built-in loop so you can dry it out pretty quickly after hanging it up. The thick quilt adds a nice cushion that your pup will definitely appreciate, especially after a long day on the road.

You can even bring it camping or hiking since it can roll up completely and even comes with a nylon sack for storage.

dog travel bed

Bed size: 39.4 by 27.6 inches

Bed weight: 13 ounces

If you want to travel light, a dog mat might be a good solution. They usually weigh basically nothing, and you can roll them up really tight, so they don’t take up a lot of space. This dog bed is a really durable option that’s both totally waterproof and machine washable. It’s also multifunctional: You can use it as a dog bed, throw it on a hotel or host’s bed to keep it protected from pet messes, or use it as a blanket to keep your pup warm. And since one side of it is made with wool, it’s definitely a snuggly option for your dog. The carrying case comes with a shoulder strap, so it’s easy to carry around, too.

foldable dog bed

Bed size: 44 by 26 inches

This dog bed is super cushiony, yet it can be folded up completely for convenient storage. It’s made with three layers of artificial cotton filing, which keeps it super thick. And thanks to the perforations in the bed, you can roll it up super tight into a compact cylinder shape that you can throw into the carrying case it comes with. It’s also machine washable, water resistant and made with a breathable fabric that’s easy to dry.

dog sleeping bag

Bed size: 43.3 by 27.5 inches

Bed weight: 32 ounces

Your dog can have a sleeping bag while he’s camping, just like you! And not only are they super adorable, but dog sleeping bags are actually really functional. A dog sleeping bag will do a great job of keeping your pup toasty if it gets chilly outside at night, and he might even prefer how cozy it is over a standard dog bed. This sleeping bag is lightweight, waterproof, machine washable and a high-quality option overall.

dog travel bed

Bed size: 23.6 by 22.2 inches

Bed weight: 14 pounds

If you’re looking for a dog bed to keep in your car permanently, you should definitely consider a dog booster seat (for small- to medium-sized dogs) or a dog hammock (for larger dogs), since they’re meant to keep your dog a bit safer than a normal dog bed would.

If you have a small pup, this dog booster seat is a great option. It’s basically like a poofy dog bed you can strap to your car seat. It’s extremely comfortable, safe and adorable, so it’s basically the perfect travel dog bed that you can always keep in your car.

memory foam travel bed for dogs

Bed size: 37 by 24 inches

Bed weight: 31.2 ounces

Your older dog will love this dog bed that’s made with memory foam so he can rest his achy joints while out on an adventure. And this bed isn’t just for senior pets, either. Any dog can enjoy the extreme comfort of a memory foam bed — and can definitely benefit from the restful night’s sleep it’ll give him. One side of the bed is covered in faux fur, so your pet can get extra snuggly and stay warm on cold surfaces. And even though this dog bed isn’t machine washable, it’s super portable since it can be rolled easily and even comes with handles attached to the bed.

elevated travel dog bed

Bed size: 42 by 24 inches

Bed weight: 14 pounds

Elevated dog beds can help keep your pup cool and prevent him from getting any dirt, dust or other debris from the floor on his fur. This can be especially useful if you have to sleep on the ground while camping or if you plan on keeping the bed somewhere that gets pretty hot. This elevated dog bed can collapse inwards (similar to a fabric folding chair for humans) and comes with a carrying case for easy storage.

portable-dog-beds

Most dogs love to accompany their owners on overnight trips (it’s much better than spending the night in a kennel), but you’ll need to keep your dog comfortable during your travels.

One of the best ways to do this is by bringing along a portable travel bed, on which your dog can snooze through the night.

There are a number of portable beds on the market that are great for exactly this kind of purpose, but some of the models are better than others. Below, we’ll explore some of the most important things to look for in a travel bed and recommend six great options for your next trip.

Continue reading for more in-depth reviews

Why Use a Travel Bed?

There are a variety of reasons to bring a portable bed with you while you are traveling, and there aren’t many drawbacks to doing so.

Some of the most important reasons to bring one along include the following:

Your dog may not be allowed to sleep on the furniture in your home away from home.

Travel beds can help anxious dogs feel a little more secure at night.

Travel beds not only give your dog a place to sleep, they give him a place to hang out.

Portable beds can often be used in conjunction with your dog’s crate.

Portable beds will help contain shed hair and keep your host’s home cleaner.

What Characteristics Should You Look for in a Portable Travel Bed?

Modern dog owners have a variety of portable travel beds from which they can choose, but some work better than others, and you’ll want to be sure to pick out one of the best possible models.

Just be sure to look for a portable bed that includes the following features and characteristics:

High-Quality Materials

Beds made with high-quality materials offer better comfort and durability than those produced by manufacturers who try to cut corners by using cheaper fabrics. It’s also important to scrutinize the materials used in the frames of elevated dog beds , as these are responsible for supporting your dog’s body weight.

Sufficient Loft

A well-cushioned bed will be more comfortable for your pup’s joints and help provide a better night’s sleep. Look for beds that are at least 1 inch thick, but thicker is always better. Loft isn’t applicable to most elevated beds, as they cushion your dog’s joints by keeping her entire body off the ground.

Easy-to-Clean Fabrics

You’ll need to wash your dog’s portable bed from time to time to remove the saliva, hair, and dirt it will collect. This is easiest to accomplish with a machine-washable bed, so they’re generally preferred to those that require hand washing.

Suitable Size

If your dog’s bed isn’t large enough, she probably won’t use it; and, if you pick a bed that is too large, you’ll just be making it harder to transport the bed.

There aren’t any hard-and-fast rules or guidelines for determining the perfect bed size for your dog, but you can usually get a good idea by simply measuring the space your dog takes up while she’s snoozing. Just be sure to add a bit to the length and width for a little wiggle room.

Water Resistant

Beds that absorb fluids – particularly urine – often develop pretty funky odors over time, and they are often more difficult to keep clean than those with water-resistant coatings or fabrics. If you are forced to choose a bed that doesn’t feature a water-resistant coating, consider applying a pet-safe water-repelling spray yourself.

If you are forced to choose a bed that doesn’t feature a water-resistant coating, consider applying a pet-safe water-repelling spray yourself.

Portability

Obviously, you’ll want a travel bed to be portable and easy to lug around – that’s pretty much the point. The best beds typically roll or fold up quite compactly and feature straps, buckles or clips to keep them secure. Elevated beds usually take up more space than conventional pet beds, but the ones detailed below are still pretty easy to stow in the car or a suitcase.

Additionally, many owners were happy to find that the bed took up very little space once it was inserted in the included stuff sack.

Aside from the complaints relating to dogs chewing up the bed, there were very few negative comments or reviews concerning the Chuckit! bed. However, a very small number of owners reported that their dog did not like the crinkling noise the nylon cover made, so it might not be ideal for super skittish dogs.

2. Carlson Pet Products Elevated Pet Bed

Carlson Pet Products Elevated Dog Bed, Indoor or Outdoor Dog Bed for Large Dogs, Green (8045)

About : The Carlson Pet Products Travel Bed is an elevated pet bed that provides your pet with a cool and comfortable place to sleep. • Can be used indoors or outdoors

Most owners who tried the Carlson Elevated Bed liked it, and most pets seemed to like it as well. The elevated design was especially appreciated by dogs with hip, joint or bone problems, and it helps to keep dogs cool during hot nights, making it very well-suited while camping or taking a trip to the beach.

Very few owners had anything negative to say about the Carlson Elevated Pet Bed. However, it may not be the ideal choice for those with strict space constraints, as it is a pretty large bed.

3. Kurgo Loft Wander Dog Bed

Kurgo Waterproof Dog Bed, Outdoor Bed for Dogs |Portable Bed Roll for Pets, Travel |Hiking, Camping, Wander Loft Dog Bed |Chili Red (Medium)

About : The Kurgo Loft Wander Dog Bed is a waterproof bed that rolls up quickly and easily, making it great for traveling with your pooch. The bed features a Microtomic rip stop top, waterproof Rufftex bottom and a polytech fill.

  • Available in both medium (36 inches x 25 inches) and large (36 inches x 48 inches) – both are about 1.5 inches thick

The majority of owners who tried the Kurgo Loft Wander Bed were happy with their purchase. Many praised the rubberized bottom, which helped to keep the bed in place, while dogs seemed to love the comfort the bed provided. The handle was also a welcome addition, according to many owners who purchased the bed.

The only common problem most owners reported was the lack of sufficient padding, but this only seemed to be a problem for a small subset of dogs and their owners. A few owners also complained about the price of the bed (especially a portable bed only used occasionally when merited), but most still consider it to be a good value.

4. Ruff and Tuff Self-Inflating Travel Dog Bed

Lightspeed Outdoors Self Inflating Fleece Top Cover Travel Dog Bed | Kennel Bed ,32-Inch by 42 Inch

About : The Ruff and Tuff Self-Inflating Dog Bed is an inflatable, foam-core bed that is easy to use and provides your pooch with a comfortable place to rest or sleep. • The bottom is water- and puncture-resistant, while the fleece top provides great comfort for your dog
  • Available in three colors: charcoal, tan and green

The Ruff and Tuff Travel Bed received glowing reviews from most owners who tried it. Most dogs appeared to find the bed extremely comfortable, while owners loved the ease with which the bed could be inflated or deflated. Additionally, several owners praised the bed’s construction and durability.

Complaints about the Ruff and Tuff Travel Bed were very rare, but a small number of owners found it too bulky when rolled up. It is also a little more expensive than most of the other options, but high-quality materials often increase the price of travel beds.

5. Kopeks Elevated Indoor-Outdoor Portable Bed

KOPEKS - Elevated Indoor Outdoor Portable Bed - Extra Large Size Blue Color

About : The Kopeks Elevated Bed is a mesh-topped portable bed, made with a steel frame and reinforced PVC connectors to provide the durability and rigidity you’d want in any pet bed. • Two supports are placed under the middle of the bed to provide plenty of support
  • Bed measures 48 inches long by 36 inches wide by 7 inches high
  • Mesh top and elevated design allow plenty of airflow to keep your canine cool and comfortable
  • Comes with a nylon carrying case

Most owners liked Kopeks Elevated Bed and found that it provided their pup with a comfortable place to sleep. Several owners also reported that the bed was very easy to put together and take apart, which makes it great for taking on adventures.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not provide a recommended weight range, and a few owners of medium to large dogs reported that the bed was not strong enough for their pup. This is disappointing, as the bed is certainly large enough for big dogs, and it is much larger than necessary for small pups.

Our Recommendation: The Chukit! Pet Travel Bed

While the Carlson Elevated Pet Bed is a good choice for owners seeking a bed that will keep their pooch up off the ground, the Chuckit! Bed is likely the best choice for most owners . Not only is the Canine Hardware Bed well-suited for travel, it is made from durable materials, provides a comfortable sleeping spot for

Not only is the Chuckit! bed well-suited for travel, it is made from durable materials, provides a comfortable sleeping spot for your pup, comes with its own stuff sack and received positive reviews by the vast majority of owners who tried it.

It is also quite affordable, which is always a nice bonus!

Car Travel Bed for Dogs - Big Barker SUV Dog Bed Review by Big Dog Mom

Finding the best car travel bed for large dogs is not easy. With so many options, find out if the Big Barker Backseat Barker SUV dog bed is worth your money.

Travel With Dogs

Some car travel dog beds are too thick.  Some are too thin.  Some SUV dog beds don’t cover your car’s cargo area, while others cover too much.

This is the journey we have been on the last few years – trying to find just the right dog bed for our Navigator that will be easy to clean and maintain while providing maximum support and safety for my Mastiffs.

Car Travel Bed for Dogs - Big Barker SUV Dog Bed Review by Big Dog Mom

In this post ( and video ), I will share with you our review of the Big Barker Backseat Barker, a car travel dog bed specially designed for large breed dogs.

Traveling with Junior and Sulley for nearly 2000 miles this week gave us more than enough experience with which to share with you our honest review of this dog bed.

Is it really the best car travel bed for dogs? Is it worth your money?

Let’s find out…

Big Barker sent me a Backseat Barker SUV Edition for this review, however, all of the content is based on our experience – both positive and negative.

Current Cargo Liner

Finding a car travel bed for my Mastiffs has been a multi-year saga.

With our first liner being a failure of epically embarrassing proportions, I set out to find an SUV cargo liner that would do what our first one failed to do; keep my car clean.

Enter our WeatherTech Cargo Liner .

WeatherTech Liner

WeatherTech Cargo Liner

A custom-fit liner with a raised lip to catch spills. Made in the USA!

Let me first say, I love this liner!

After using it for several years, here are the pros and cons of the WeatherTech SUV cargo liner for large dogs:

  • Keeps carpet underneath clean
  • Prevents imbedded slobber in carpet
  • No shifting of liner while car in motion
  • Durable and long-lasting material
  • Easy to clean
  • Dogs slip and slide while car in motion
  • Hard surface not very comfortable to lay on
  • Items placed in the back with the dogs will shift
  • Friction & pressure on elbow joints worsening elbow calluses

WHY is a car travel bed important for large and giant breed dogs?

As my Mastiffs have gotten older and are approaching their senior dog years, it has become more and more evident to me that their bodies need more support and that the WeatherTech cargo liner , while clean, was just not cutting it.

Here are just four factors to consider if you are debating whether or not you should invest in a dog bed for your car:

1. Car Travel Safety

As I mentioned above, with just the liner alone, there is a significant amount of shifting that takes place while the car is in motion.  This includes items placed in the back as well as the dogs themselves.

It only took one road trip with a cooler in the back with Junior and Sulley to quickly realize what a mistake that was.

With every turn the cooler would shift a little causing the dogs (ahem… Sulley) to overreact and move as far away from the cooler as possible.

On at least one occasion, this resulted in Sulley climbing into the cabin area to flee the runaway beverage box.

With a car travel bed, your dog will remain much more stable during turns and acceleration, and if you need to store other items in the back with your dogs, prevent the two from colliding.

And with respect to the Big Barker Backseat Barker specifically, the bolsters (pillows) protect the dogs from being pushed against the sides while turning as well.

2. Orthopedic Support

Consider the impact that starts, stops, and bumps in the road have on a giant breed dog riding solely on the trunk floor or with just a thin liner.

Every bump and turn can easily jar a dog’s joints, especially at higher speeds.

Car Travel Bed for Dogs - Big Barker SUV Dog Bed Review by Big Dog Mom

Consider that what seems like a comfortable ride in the driver’s seat feels more like an uneven gravel road to your dog in the back.

Laying on hard metal and plastic provides zero shock absorption, resulting in progressively worsening damage to your dog’s hips and joints.

Handcrafted with the same super-supportive OrthoMedic™ Foam , the Backseat Barker SUV Edition supports big dogs’ bones and joints as they sink into the foam, just like their premium Big Barker Dog Beds do.

According to a groundbreaking new research study out of PennVet University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Clinical Investigations Center , Big Barker therapeutic mattresses provided osteoarthritic 70+ pound large dogs with:

  • significant reductions in pain and joint stiffness,
  • significant improvement in joint function, gait, energy, and quality of life,
  • 75% of dogs showed significant improvement in nighttime restfulness.

While the UPenn research was conducted with the 7” dog bed, the American-made proprietary foam and therapeutic support are the same with the 3” Backseat Barker.

Click here to read the entire study and see what the experts are saying about the results.

3. Protection for Dog Elbow Calluses

In Dog Elbow Callus: Are They Inevitable or Preventable? I discuss at length how dog elbow and hock calluses develop and how to minimize their growth.

In addition to applying elbow butter ( DIY Elbow butter recipe here ), orthopedic bedding and soft surfaces are critical components to improving the health of your large dog’s elbow and hock calluses .

In a moving vehicle, your dog will slide on the hard surface with every bump and turn of your car, potentially worsening calluses.

The addition of a quality car travel bed for dogs can reduce the amount of friction between your dog’s elbows and hocks and the surface beneath him due to the increased stability and orthopedic support.

No more playing Road Trip Slip & Slide.

A car travel dog bed like the Backseat Barker SUV Edition from Big Barker will hug and protect your dog’s elbows from further damage.

Big dogs are creatures of comfort.

Whether it’s a comfy couch, your king-size bed, or a pile of dirty clothes, large breed dogs are drawn to soft bedding.

Therefore, if nothing else, one of the biggest advantages of the Big Barker Backseat Barker SUV dog bed is the added travel comfort for your large dog.

Whether you are taking a short trip to the pet store or a long road trip to Alabama, your dog deserves the same level of comfort as you are getting from your premium driver’s seat foam and electric lumbar support.

VIDEO: Best Car Travel Bed for Large Dogs | Big Barker SUV Bed Review | WORTH THE MONEY?

The latest on Youtube:

Big barker backseat barker suv dog bed review, ease of use.

Best Car Travel Bed for Dogs? Big Barker SUV Dog Bed Review Is it really the best car travel bed for dogs? Is it worth your money?

Life as a Mastiff owner is generally focused on two things – cleanliness and durability.  If a product fails in either of those two qualities, it’s a no-go for me.

Why waste my money?

So when I consider the category of Ease of Use, my review is primarily based on how easy it is to clean and maintain.

As I shared in my Big Barker Dog Bed review , the traditional 7” Big Barker dog beds are super easy to clean while not losing a bit of the integrity of the fabric over time.

With the Backseat Barker SUV Edition , the top cover has hidden zippers that extend a full 70% around the foam construction – making the foam easy to take in and out as you clean the cover.

I also found that the bolsters, or pillows, on the sides were easy to remove and put back on.

So while time will tell with the integrity of the fabric, so far the SUV dog bed is holding up to the standard of all other Big Barker beds as expected.

So, for Ease of Use, we give Big Barker an easy 5 out of 5 paws for awesomeness!

Quality & Durabilit y

Like all other Big Barker products, I am always impressed with their quality American-made construction.

With the tremendous beating large and giant breed dogs have on just about everything, it is wonderful to have a company that designs its products with our unique needs in mind.

The quality of the seams, zippers, fabric, and proprietary OrthoMedic™ foam construction is unrivaled in the dog world when it comes to the needs of big dogs.

100% made in the USA, all of the Big Barker products are built to last.

Hands down, another 5 out of 5 paws for awesomeness!

Affordability

Best Car Travel Bed for Dogs? Big Barker SUV Dog Bed Review Is it really the best car travel bed for dogs? Is it worth your money?

In terms of affordability, I really feel the Big Barker Backseat Barker is priced competitively and worth every cent.

While not as clean as my WeatherTech , the combination of the liner and the dog bed seems, for us, to be a match made in Heaven!

Keep in mind, if your cargo space is not set up like mine, you do not need to buy a liner in addition to the car travel bed.

If the Backseat Barker lays flush to the sides (without covering any vents), you will be fine to save your money on an extra liner.

Available on the Big Barker website, linked in the description below, are waterproof liners if you want one.

This is probably not a bad idea if you have a puppy or live where your dog may be getting in and out of the wet such as near a beach or lake.

And something to consider is that Big Barker also sells refurbished Backset Barkers in all three sizes if you don’t mind buying used to save some money.

On average it looks like you can save about $60 that way, which is great!

That said, I am deducting half a paw just simply due to the higher premium price point, which, let’s face it, is not in every dog owner’s budget.

These beds are an investment, not a pet store splurge.

Drool Score 💦

My Mastiffs loved the Big Barker Backseat Barker .  So much so, Sulley didn’t want to come out of the car the first time he sat on it!

Car Travel Bed for Dogs - Big Barker SUV Dog Bed Review by Big Dog Mom

I am deducting a half a paw simply due to the issue with the air conditioner vent in our Navigator.

While not the fault of Big Barker, it is something that impacted my dog’s comfort initially until I figured out why Junior was so hot.

Once I shifted the bed 90 degrees away from the vent, he slept soundly and comfortably.

If your air conditioning vents open from the top, you will have no issues.

How to Order Your Backseat Barker SUV Edition

The Big Barker car travel bed comes in three sizes, so you will want to take a few measurements before you place your order.

Because the wings of the Backseat Barker adjust to the width of your car, the primary measurements you will need are the width and depth of your cargo space.  The foam should not be wider than the floor space so that the bed fits snug with the wings resting on the sides as pillows.

The most important measurement you need to take is the depth, which is the amount of space needed between the backseat and the trunk door. There is a 10-inch depth difference between each size.

Here are the measurements for each size. The widths shown are as measured with and without the pillow wings.

55” wide x 25” deep x 3” thick

Inner Foam:  30” wide x 25” deep x 3” thick

58” wide x 35” deep x 3” thick

Inner Foam:  33” wide x 35” deep x 3” thick

Extra Large

61” wide x 45” deep x 3” thick

Inner Foam:  36” wide x 45” deep x 3” thick

Watch our video for an in-depth illustration of how to measure and place your order.

Is the Backseat Barker the Best Car Travel Bed For Dogs?

While it is not perfect, the Backseat Barker SUV bed is a significant improvement over the simple cargo liner we were using.

Here is a summary of the pros and cons from our recent 2000-mile road trip with the Backseat Barker:

  • Premium comfort – the dogs didn’t want to get out of the car and snored through half of the trip.
  • Increased stability while car in motion
  • Improved safety due to lack of shifting
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Fit perfect with pillows on sides for added comfort and stability
  • 3” OrthoMedic foam provided more than enough support
  • Thick, but not too thick, for the dogs to jump onto from their Twistep
  • Bolster (pillow) on the right side covered the air conditioner vent.  This is likely a unique issue with our model SUV, and was easily resolved by shifting the bed 90 degrees.
  • Dog hair is a problem – You may want to purchase an additional cargo liner to cover the carpet or get a dog hair remover tool like the ChomChom Roller .  The dog hair issue for us was worse because we couldn’t position the bed properly due to the vent issue.

With all of that said, I give the award for Best Car Travel Bed For Dogs to the Big Barker Backseat Barker SUV Edition !

One comment.

W pups it be good to use in the home when not traveling? I find it difficult to store, should I just use as a daily bed? It worked great during my my move 1000 miles with 3 dogs but I feel it’s wasting my money getting moved around the garage.

The 8 Best Dog Car Seats and Restraints, Tested With Real Dogs

How We Tested

What to look for in dog car seats.

  • Why Trust The Spruce Pets

The Spruce Pets / Lecia Landis

From road trips to running errands, your dog needs well-fitting protection to stay safe when you hit the road. While unsettling to think about, pets can be injured or ejected from a vehicle during a traffic accident. But even a turn that's too sharp or a sudden stop can result in injury for an unsecured dog.

According to Dr. Jamie Richardson of Small Door Veterinary, keeping your dog “secure and as immobile as possible” is essential for keeping it safe in a car. While harnesses, carriers, and crates often make safety claims, there is no official standard or test requirements in place to verify protection for dogs in car collisions. For our real-world testing of car seats, we consulted with Lindsey Wolko, founder of the nonprofit Center for Pet Safety (CPS), which conducts independent crash tests on travel products designed for dogs.

Five of the nine dog car seats and restraints that we recommend were independently evaluated and certified by the CPS, and three have all been crash tested in a lab setting, either by the Automotive Safety Engineering, an Australian testing and engineering company recognized in the United States and Europe, or by their manufacturer to adhere to standards set for child restraints (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 213 or United Nations ECE R129).

We tested a selection of dog car seats, harnesses, and carriers, sending each to a volunteer tester to try out with their dog over several weeks and in variable driving conditions. Following a testing methodology written in advance, our testers evaluated each safety product for its ease of use, ease of cleaning, security, size, and overall value.

Our overall favorite is the Away Pet Carrier , which is easily secured using a seatbelt. It's designed to keep your dog fully enclosed, but there's a zippered mesh panel on top for a quick check-in with your furry friend. It works best for smaller dogs, so one of the other crash-tested and certified products we recommend may work even better for your dog.

Best Overall

Away the pet carrier.

  • Portability 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5

Exterior latches for attachment to seatbelt

Crash tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety

Meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements

Water-resistant lining and exterior

Zippered top and side openings for easy access to your pet

Not suitable for dogs over 18 pounds

The Spruce Pets / Alessandra Amodio

The Pet Carrier from Away received a 5 star rating from the Center for Pet Safety , and our tester's 6-pound dog hopped right in the moment the carrier was introduced. "She felt safe in this carrier and slept in it almost the entire car ride," remarked our tester, who took the carrier on a 12-hour road trip.

For proper use in a car, there are three essential connection points. Latches on the front position a seatbelt securely around the carrier, the shoulder strap is wrapped around a car seat's headrest, and an interior clip is attached to a harness or collar to keep a dog safely inside. A zippered top and side opening—both made of mesh—allow you and your dog to keep tabs on each other with the ability to easily unzip for a quick scratch behind the ears. There are also retractable privacy screens, which can help to minimize potential distractions.

The Away Pet Carrier also has useful storage features, including a full-length side zip pocket with a key holder. There's also a side zip pocket with a waterproof lining and drainage holes where you can keep your dog's collapsible travel water bowl. There's even an included name tag slot for displaying easily visible emergency contact information.

One of our tester dog's favorite features was the plush sherpa bedding. "It must be comfortable because my dog loves to go in and sleep in it at home," our human tester said. While the bedding can be hand-washed and dried, it is not machine-washable.

The Away Pet Carrier bag also meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for bringing a pet inside the cabin of a commercial flight, but you should always confirm size restrictions with your flight provider before flying with a pet. Of course, FAA size restrictions do have a downside: the Away Pet Carrier is likely to be too small for dogs over 18 pounds.

The Away Pet Carrier comes in black or "Coast" blue.

Certification: Center for Pet Safety | Dimensions: 18.7 x 10.8 x 10.75 inches | Size Recommendation: Dogs up to 18 pounds | Colors: Black, blue | Materials: Nylon, leather

Best for Overnights

Sleepypod mobile pet bed.

Functions as pet carrier, bed, and car seat

Great for dogs that like to curl up to sleep

Removable and machine-washable liner included

Removable mesh dome

Hook and loop latches for proper seatbelt positioning

Our tester found that the bulky design made it difficult to use as a carrier

If your dog likes to curl up while sleeping, then the distinct round shape of the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed car seat should be very inviting.

After watching an instructional video on proper car seat use , our tester found it easy to use the hook and loop positioning points on the carrier to secure a seatbelt in place. The bed is recommended for dogs up to 15 pounds. The top is made of mesh to facilitate airflow and can also be unzipped and removed for use as a bed outside of the car. It's available in a variety of colors and comes with a removable pad that can be cleaned in a washing machine.

The one downside our testers noted is that the bulky design—which makes it nice and roomy for your dog—made the Sleepypod unwieldy as a carrier, even with the use of the included shoulder strap.

All Sleepypod pet carriers have been tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety .

Certification: Center for Pet Safety | Dimensions: 17 x 13.5 inches | Size Recommendation: Dogs up to 15 pounds | Colors: Arctic white, glacier silver, robin egg blue, blossom pink, strawberry red, dark chocolate, jet black, first blush, olive | Materials: Nylon, mesh, foam

Best Harness

Ezydog drive dog car harness.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5
  • Security 5 /5
  • Ease of Cleaning 4.5 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

Crash tested and certified by Automotive Safety Engineering in Australia (recognized in the U.S. and Europe)

Functions as a walking harness with D-ring attachments

Hand wash, air dry

"Mag-Lok" magnetic clasp closure

Very stiff at first which can make it difficult to put on

A harness can provide a more minimal way of securing your dog while on car rides. The EzyDog Drive Dog Car Harness enables you to secure your dog with a standard car seatbelt.

"Although my dog didn't like having the harness on and being restrained, having her securely attached to a seatbelt gave me peace of mind," our tester said.

The EzyDog Drive Dog Car Harness is available in three sizes (small, medium, and large) and has four adjustable points to fit most dogs. Size selection should be based on your dog's girth measurement. Our tester found the initial setup of the harness to be intricate, with a few rounds of trial and error required, to find the proper fit for their 35-pound Blue Heeler. "My dog's chest measurement was a lot bigger than her neck size, so I had to find the correct fit for her chest first, and then adjust the neck accordingly," she commented.

Once the harness is properly fitted, each webbing strap can be locked into place, so you only need to adjust the harness again if your dog's weight changes. A magnetic clasp makes it easy to put on and take off, and a seatbelt is easily threaded through handles on the harness.

The EzyDog harness was independently crash-tested and certified by Automotive Safety Engineering in Australia . It also surpasses the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards that the U.S. Department of Transportation established for child restraint systems.

Certification: Automotive Safety Engineering in Australia (recognized in the U.S. and Europe) | Dimensions: 19.29 x 9.45 x 0.24 inches (large) | Size Recommendation: 11- to 25-inch girth (small), 15- to 34-inch girth (medium), 19- to 42-inch girth (large) | Colors: Black | Materials: Nylon, synthetic fabric

Best Budget Harness

Kurgo enhanced strength dog car harness.

Crash-tested in lab setting to meet guidelines for child restraints set by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 213

Five adjustment points for a custom fit

Compatible with any vehicle seatbelt system

Available in fives sizes and five colors

Harness can be difficult to put on

The Kurgo Tru-Fit Enhanced Strength Dog Harness comes in five sizes to fit dogs up to 75 pounds with a maximum chest size of 44 inches. The harness has five adjustment points so you can get a customized fit for your dog's unique shape. Plus, the Tru-fit Enhanced Strength Dog Harness has been crash-tested by Kurgo in a lab facility using benchmarks and guidelines from the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 213 , which is used for child restraints systems.

This Kurgo harness is also equipped with a no-pull D ring on the front, a D ring on the back, and a padded chest plate, to help keep your dog protected and comfortable while in the car and on a walk. The machine-washable harness is compatible with any vehicle seat belt system, and it includes a carabiner to attach the harness properly along with detailed instructions for crash protection.

Certification: N/A | Dimensions: 0.25 x 5 x 6 inches (medium) | Size Recommendation: 12- to 18-inch chest (extra small), 16- to 22-inch chest (small), 18- to 28-inch chest (medium), 24- to 36-inch chest (large), 28- to 44-inch chest (extra large) | Colors: Black, charcoal, deep violet, ink blue, red | Materials: Nylon

Best for Very Small Dogs

Sleepypod atom.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Ease of Cleaning 5 /5

Large pockets on front and back for pet travel essentials

Fits beneath a wide range of airline seats

Folds flat for easy storage

The durable nylon isn't as well-ventilated as some carriers

This carseat and carrier for very small dogs is easy to secure in a car by placing a seatbelt through the built-in buckles located on each side. And like the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed, the Sleepypod Atom Carrier is tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety .

Our tester enjoyed the ease of use and peace of mind this carrier provided and found themselves taking their petite dog with them everywhere. A padded, adjustable shoulder strap makes it easy to carry, and the zippered mesh panel at the top offers convenient access to your furry friend. The bag is designed for dogs (and cats!) up to 12 pounds. It's easy to wipe clean and can be used in the main cabin on most commercial flights.

Certification: Center for Pet Safety | Dimensions: 10.5 x 8.5 x 17 inches | Size Recommendation: Dogs up to 12 pounds | Colors: Robin egg blue, blossom pink, strawberry red, dark chocolate, jet black, first blush, olive, charcoal | Materials: Nylon, polyester

Best for Nervous Travelers

Diggs travel carrier.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Portability 2.5 /5
  • Design 4 /5

Seat belt clips and a buckle strap keep your pet secure

Easy to wipe clean

Space for dog to lay and sit

Functions as pet carrier and car seat

Bulky design might not work for daily carrier use

Seat belt clips and a buckle strap strongly contributed to this pet carrier's five-star rating from the Center for Pet Safety . "The bag is structured and sturdy, which makes it feel safe," remarked our tester. Their 14-pound dog was comfortable, with space to sit and lay down while tethered to the bag via the interior clip and enclosed during a long car ride.

The carrier is equipped with three pockets, a detachable cross-body strap, and a highly convenient side panel that makes it easy to insert a 20.8 by 11.6-inch pee pad without disrupting your pet inside. Mesh side panels and a zippered mesh panel on top make it easy for you and your pet to quickly check in on each other as needed. The design of the bag is also suitable for airline travel, but it may feel too bulky for daily carrier use.

Certification: Center for Pet Safety | Dimensions: 20 x 10.8 x 11.5 inches | Size Recommendation: Dogs up to 18 pounds | Colors: Blush, navy, charcoal, slate | Materials: Nylon, polyester

Best for Large Dogs

Rock creek crates stationary dog crate.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Security 4 /5

Crash-tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety

No assembly required

Soft, removable pad included

Appropriate for daily crate use

10-year guarantee from manufacturer

Very heavy, and most humans will require an extra set of hands to move

Does not fit in all cars

If you have a large doggo, this CPS-certified crate made from aircraft-grade aluminum can be used to transport your precious canine cargo.

"I love all of the colors this comes in, and it's clear they're thinking about what dog owners want and made a very secure crate," expressed our tester. "This fits my extremely tall dog, and he seems super comfortable in it."

The Aluminum Dog Crate from Rock Creek Crates is made in the U.S. and comes in three sizes. The manufacturer recommends measuring your dog's height and length to find the right size for your dog. Our tester used the crate for daily use in their home as well as for safety in their SUV. The size of the crate is too large for some vehicles (e.g., smaller SUVs, hatchbacks), so double-check the measurements for your car before purchasing.

The crate arrives fully assembled with a removable pad inside and padded handles on the outside. It's easy to wipe clean and has non-slip feet. To ensure that your dog stays safely inside the crate at all times, the front door has a lock and key, making it escape-proof. Our tester's dog tried and wore itself out. It's expensive, but it does come with a 10-year guarantee from the manufacturer.

Certification: Center for Pet Safety | Dimensions: 30 x 20 x 22 inches (medium) | Size Recommendation: Under 22 inches in height (medium), under 27 inches in height (large), under 32 inches in height (extra-large) | Colors: Gray slate, midnight black, white snowfall, sand dune, blue skyline, plum field, navy river | Materials: Aluminum

Tavo Pets Maeve Car Seat

Lab tested benchmarks align with child restraint standard by United Nations ECE (R129)

Canopy fabric is UPF 50+

Made with naturally flame resistant fabric

Easily secures in place and can be used as pet stroller with frame (sold separately)

Has not been crash-tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety

The Maeve Pet Car Seat from Tavo Pets has two components, the pet carrier and the vehicle base, that work together to keep a dog secure in the backseat of a car. The carrier is offered in three sizes for dogs up to 30 pounds, provides protection from sunlight, and has been lab tested to meet the safety benchmarks for children's restraints in accordance with United Nations ECE (R129) .

The pet carrier has a sturdy frame and is covered in naturally flame resistant fabric. The moveable canopy provides UPF 50+ protection on top along with zippered mesh windows throughout for visibility and airflow. Once inside your dog will rest on one of two provided memory foam mattress pads. The Maeve also comes with two liners, two leash tethers, and a pouch to keep everything organized.

The vehicle base is 12.5 pounds, but once installed you shouldn't need to move it for proper use of the Maeve as a car seat. The pet carrier piece on its own is easy to install and remove from the vehicle base, and it can be used as a pet stroller when paired with the Roscoe Stroller Frame from Tavo Pets.

Tavo Pets is a small pet focused brand from Nuna, the makers of strollers and carriers for human babies and toddlers. The Maeve Pet Car Seat can be purchased on its own, or you can can get the 3-in-1 pet protection system which pairs the pet carrier, the stroller frame, and the vehicle base all together.

Certification: N/A | Dimensions:  31.7 x 16 x 22 inches (medium) | Size Recommendation: Up 20 pounds (small; up to 25 pounds (medium); up to 30 pounds (large)| Colors: Onyx, merle, fawn, brindle, or sable | Materials: Aluminum, vegan leather, memory foam

Final Verdict

A properly fitting car seat or restraint is essential for protecting your dog every time they ride in your car. Our overall favorite is the Pet Carrier from Away , which received a five-star rating from the Center for Pet Safety , but it's only recommended for dogs up to 18 pounds. If you have a larger dog, the EzyDog Drive Dog Car Harness can be adjusted to find the right fit and attached to a seatbelt via handles. This harness has been independently crash tested by Automotive Safety Engineering (ASE) in Australia , which is recognized in the U.S. and Europe.

We researched independently crash-tested and certified safe dog carriers, crates, and harnesses from the Center for Pet Safety in the U.S. and Automotive Engineering Safety in Australia, and then selected 13 products for real-world testing in a car with a dog.

Each testing duo received a car seat or restraint designed for their dog's size. For three weeks, our canine test subjects were buckled up and taken for rides both long and short. All the while, each human counterpart observed and provided feedback within the following categories: ease of use, ease of cleaning, security, size, and overall value.

At the end of our trial period, we gathered and analyzed the data and information provided by our testing teams. We then ranked and categorized our top picks to simplify your search for the right car seat or restraint to keep your dog safe.

Independent Testing

Many harness and car seat makers claim that their products have been crash-tested, but there are no industry standards for car pet restraints. That’s why it’s a good idea to look for crash testing that’s been conducted by independent third-party groups.

For example, the Center for Pet Safety performed crash tests by using a dog crash test dummy, allowing it to create safety standards and requirements to evaluate pet travel items. So far, only a few products have received the center’s crash test certification, but others are working to be certified.

The safest products are typically more expensive than other car restraints, but they are well worth it, according to Center for Pet Safety founder Lindsey Wolko, who has seen the results of the crash tests and heard so many accident stories.

“We recommend that they look at this as an investment. These are going to be more expensive, because there's more due diligence conducted on the products,” Wolko said. “Something is better than nothing to prevent distraction, which can prevent a crash in the first place. However, if you are in a crash, and your pets are in the wrong products, there can be serious consequences.”

Always pay attention to the size and weight guidelines to make sure that a seat or harness will fit your pet correctly. If a restraint doesn’t fit right, your pet might be able to escape, which could cause a distraction or be dangerous if you were to have an accident.

Wipe down your harness or car seat regularly. Most can be kept clean with a damp cloth, but some have linings that can be machine washed—like the dog car seat cover —or can be hosed down. Always check the manufacturer’s directions.

“Never, ever, never ever,” says Wolko. That’s because airbags can deploy and hurt them, and also because dogs can become a major distraction while you’re driving. Then you’re paying attention to your pet instead of the road.

Most states don’t have laws that require dogs to be restrained, but some do so it’s always a good idea to check. Rhode Island, for example, requires pets to be secured with a harness or crate, or in some other way. In other states, drivers may be charged under existing distracted-driver laws if a loose pet is the reason they get into an accident. Securing your pup with a sturdy dog seat belt is just a good preventive measure.

“Those are consistent across the country,” says Wolko. “If you've got a dog that's climbing over your shoulder while you're driving, and you get pulled over, the police officer will ticket you for distracted driving, no matter where you are.”

Why Trust The Spruce Pets?

After real-world testing, this roundup was updated by Anna Mejorada, a writer for The Spruce Pets, who shares her home with a happy Pomeranian named Gidget. Before researching and writing about pet products for a living, Mejorada embarked on a self-mandated, ongoing quest to find the optimal items for her dog. She is now delightfully devoted to helping humans discover and select the most favorable products for their pets.

A previous version was written by Mary Jo DiLonardo , who has been writing about pets and animals for several decades. She has a rescue dog and has fostered more than three dozen dogs and puppies. Pet health and safety are very important to DiLonardo, and she’s always researching the latest products to keep the dogs in her care healthy and safe.

For this story, we consulted with respected safety expert Lindsey Wolko of the Center for Pet Safety. We also interviewed Dr. Jamie Richardson of Small Door Veterinary for background on the dog car seats Richardson likes, what to look for in a car seat for your dog, and why dog car seats are important to own.

Frequently Asked Questions about Travel Dog Bed

What makes a dog bed suitable for travel.

Travel dog beds are typically lightweight, portable, and easy to clean. They might fold or roll up for easy transport, and many come with a travel bag. Some travel dog beds also have water-resistant or water-proof covers which make them ideal for outdoor use.

How do I choose the right size travel bed for my dog?

Choosing the right size travel bed for your dog involves measuring your dog's length from nose to tail while they're in their usual sleeping position. This will give you a good idea of the bed size you need. It's always a good idea to size up if your dog falls between sizes to ensure they're comfortable.

How can I clean and maintain a travel dog bed?

The cleaning instructions for a travel dog bed will depend on the specific product and the materials used. Many travel beds have removable, machine-washable covers. For the bed itself, spot cleaning is often recommended. Always make sure the bed is completely dry before packing it away to prevent mold and mildew.

As more of us plan staycations and weekend trips away with our beloved pets to pet-friendly hotels , we’ve got to make sure our cars are set up for not only their safety but their comfort too, and that includes a travel dog bed.

They’ve already got a trusty bed at home but depending on how big it is or whether it’s fixed in place, it’s unlikely you’ll want to keep swapping it from the boot of your car and back again.

When you consider the way you’re going to transport your pooch in your vehicle, if that’s using a travel dog crate , a safety harness that buckles in, or a dog guard you’re going to need to add in some cushioning like a dog car bed, travel mat for dogs, or even a portable dog bed that doubles up as a bed for your vacation abode.

Can a dog travel in the car?

The short answer is yes, dogs can travel in the car. But, did you know it's a legal requirement to make sure your dog is restrained when they’re in the car? This is so they can't distract you while you're driving or injure you, or themselves, if you happen to stop quickly.

There are lots of pet safety travel products you can use, such as seat belt harnesses and specially-designed leads that can be attached to headrests, dog guards, dog car seats, a dog car crate, or a dog cage for car travel.

When it comes to travel beds for dogs, it’s not such a straightforward decision, so we’ve taken into account the size of different breeds when it comes to choosing between a dog bed, a dog car seat, a dog travel mat, and car boot liners.

Below, we’ve selected options for your car and your dog that will make sure everyone is a happy traveller.

The best travel dog beds

The easiest option and for most with a reasonably sized car is to choose a travel dog bed that will fit in the back of your boot.

You'll want to make sure your dog has enough room to get comfy, especially if it's a long journey and if the weather doesn't plan on being so great a waterproof option will always be a safe bet.

1. Where's Winnie Luxury Dog Car Seat

www.whereswinnie.co.uk

Description

Suitable for toy to medium-sized dogs up to 10kg, this stylish dog car seat cleverly clips into the ISOFIX points in your car as well as offering a back strap option. Your dog is then clipped into the seat with the included shock-absorbing safety leash. It's available in five gorgeous colours and can be used as a normal dog bed when you reach your holiday destination.

Specifications

Shock-absorbing safety leash is included with every car seat

55cm (W) x 55cm (D) x 30cm (H)

Main fabric: 92% polyester and 8% nylon.

Base fabric: 100% polyester

Inner cushion pads: 100% recycled polyester (made from recycled plastic bottles)

Removable and washable cover

Reviewed by Digital Writer Emily Gilbert: "While I was initially a little sceptical about the price of this dog bed, I quickly changed my mind. Not only is it visually really attractive but it's incredibly well made with a super-soft corduroy fabric that was easy to brush off dog hair. Being a dachshund, my dog can quite often get a muddy belly on our walks so being able to wash the cover is a huge help. I also love that the bed is made up of recycled plastic bottles, making it a really great eco-friendly option.

My dog Luna instantly took to the plush bed when we took it out of the packaging and happily curled up in it within minutes, meaning it'll be able to double up as a travel bed when we go on holiday too. She was also very chuffed with the accompanying treat that the Where's Winnie team provided with the delivery. My favourite part - and the real USP - of the Where's Winnie car seat is that it clips into the ISOFIX points of our car. Along with the back strap, I feel much better knowing our precious pooch is as safe as she possibly can be. I also like that the plump cushions raise her higher so she can see out the window and the anti-slip base really helps to prevent the car seat from moving around which has previously been the case with other seats we've used. Overall, I'm so chuffed with our Where's Winnie car seat and I haven't stopped recommending it to other dog owners!"

2. Chuckit! Travel Bed

Rrp: £ 30.29

Perhaps one of the most popular portable beds out there, the Chuckit! Travel bed is perfect for literally throwing in your boot when you're bringing your pooch on the journey. It comes highly rated due to its durable nylon ripstop design, but doesn't lack comfort for your dog as it features a plush quilted top. It is fairly large so more than enough space for larger breeds but rolls up and fits in a travel bag for compact storage.

Quilted bed with double sided offset quilted design

Poly suede upper material for comfort with nylon ripstop base for durability

Machine washable

Supplied with a portable stuff sack

Suits small to large breeds

Size: 99.1 x 76.2 x 7.6 cm

Review : "I would say this sleeping mat would suit up to a medium-sized bread dog, such as a Border Collie or a rather large Shetland Sheepdog, in particular, if they stretch out when sleeping. This bed is very compact for its size and plushness. You will need to shake and fluff it once you’ve taken it out, just like you would do with a sleeping mat.

"My dog likes it when I was on holiday with her and she has slept and rested on it. It’s great when paired with a blanket when it gets cold or used as a pillow. The bottom is very easy to wipe clean if it’s dirty. It comes with a bag which is a huge plus as you can nearly store it away when travelling. It packs a little bit than a sleeping bag so do keep that in mind. The bag is also large enough to comfortably slip the sleeping mat inside it."

3. Floral Travel Pet Bed

www.joules.com

Just because it's for the boot of your car doesn't mean a travel dog bed doesn't have to look good. This pretty Joules floral design is ideal if you also need it to double up as a portable bed for when you reach your destination. It features a quilted design covered in fleece on one side for added comfort and a hardwearing canvas on the other side, it also has carry handles so you can roll it up and transport it easily.

Review : "This dog bed is perfect for travel, beautiful in design and plush and soft. It can be folded for puppies and spread out on car seats. I love it!"

4. RAC Advanced Boot Bed with Bumper Protector

www.argos.co.uk

Back to basics with this travel bed for your car, it's designed with padding so it's comfortable for your dog but also with an extra flap that folds down to protect your car from your dog's claws as they jump in and out of the boot. It's also water-resistant and leakproof, so if it's been a rainy day at least your boot won't get soaked. Some reviews have reported the flap isn't the same wipe clean material as the whole bed.

Easy wipe clean

Water resistant

Boot protector (reports not wipe clen)

Suitable for small to medium size breeds

Manufacturer's one year guarantee

Size: H10 x W75 x D85cm

Review : "Really pleased with this item, doesn’t quite cover the whole boot but is a nice comfy, waterproof liner for the dog (I have a large lab)."

5. Ismael Dog Oval Waterproof Softee Bed

www.wayfair.co.uk

This bed is sturdy enough that it won't get ruined after a few muddy walks and most importantly, is waterproof. The cushioned oval design means it will fit in most boots without any trouble, and it's easy to remove for your dog to relax in if you're on holiday somewhere away from home. It's covered in a heavy-duty hard-wearing 100 per cent polyester waterproof material treated with a water repellant coating which is easy to keep clean.

Elevated bolster cushion

Size: M 61cm W x 51c m D x 22cm H/ L 76cm W x 64cm D x 24cm H / Jumbo 97cm W x 74cm D x 25cm H

Review : "This is the best dog bed we have had in over 40 years of having dogs in the family. We already had one of these beds bought three years ago from another supplier (much dearer than Wayfair!!) so knew what to expect when we decided to throw away an inferior bed and instead have two of these - one for each dog. Whilst our standard poodles now have one each they can both easily sleep in one bed if they so wish. The beds are really easy to keep clean, look good and, judging from the amount of time our dogs stay in them, are very comfortable."

The best dog bed car seat

A dog car seat is not for every breed, you'll perhaps find this option is better suited to smaller breeds who will be able to fit in a smaller space.

There's also a simple seat cover option, so instead of installing an actual booster seat for your dog, you can get a hammock cover that will protect your car.

6. Kurgo Heather Dog Booster Seat

www.monsterpetsupplies.co.uk

A great dog car seat for your pooch if they like to look out of the window during long car journeys. They can see the world go by thanks to the Kurgo booster seat, which attaches to your existing seatbelt and fastens to a dog harness to keep them secure while you're driving. It's waterproof and also fleece-lined so still comfortable for your dog to sit in.

Holds up to 30lb dog

Easy and quick install

Metal supports for structural integrity

Collapsible for easy storage

Adjustable seat belt tether easily attaches to all dog harnesses

Waterproof exterior

Machine washable liner with reversible pad to keep the seat clean

Size: H42.55 x W7.3 x D37.15cm

Review : "This is an ideal small dog seat, fits easily to seat and seat belt is secure. We have a cockapoo which is 16 weeks old, I can’t see her fitting into after maybe 20 weeks, so I again stress long term this is only for a small dog."

7. Personalised Dog Car Booster Seat

www.etsy.com

If you've got a nice car and you're worried about the interior but want something a little more luxurious for your dog to ride in, we suggest this handmade personalised dog bed car seat. 8. Kurgo Dog Hammock for Back Seat of Car

Rrp: £ 16.99

Another Kurgo product that comes highly recommended is this dog hammock, which covers the back seat of your car. If you're not looking to get an individual dog booster seat, a dog seat cover will protect your seats and prevent hair from getting everywhere. It's also waterproof and made from durable ripstop fabric and has zippered openings for access to seatbelts. It slips over your car seats and has blocked access to the front seats so your dog won't distract you as much while driving.

Durable water and stain-resistant

Nylon ripstop material

Zippered openings for seat belts

Machine wash cold on gentle cycle

Size: W140 x L142 cm

Review : "I love this product! Having just bought a new SUV, I really wanted to protect my seats from my super shedding pugs and their nails. This is the easiest thing to install, it looks great when it's up, the dogs seem comfortable in it. I like the built-in zipper for the harness restraints."

9. Pets at Home Car Seat Mat

www.petsathome.com

Keep things simple and opt for a car seat mat that hooks over the headrest and protects your car from dirty paws. You will still need to keep your pet suitably restrained so fastening the seatbelt to your dog's harness will keep them secure while you're driving.

Fully machine washable to reduce bacteria build up

Hooks around the headrest

Suitable for most car seats

Size: D0.8 x W57 x L140cm

Review: "Fits easily and well. Dog loves it. Can be removed easily to either brush any dirt off or hoover. Would recommend."

The best travel mats for dogs

Even more portable than a dog bed, these mats can be rolled up so that you can stash them in your boot or home when not in use and won't take up too much space.

Or, there are mats which fit inside a dog crate or cage to make it more comfortable.

10. Petface Outdoor Paws Travel Mat

This is a truly portable option for your dog. The quilted water-resistant mat rolls up so you can easily store it in your boot, or just by the back door of your home. It also includes its own little carry case so if it gets too muddy, you can take it inside without creating too much mess.

11. House Of Paws Navy Water Resistant Crate Mat

If you've opted for a crate to go in the back of your boot this water-resistant crate mat will work perfectly to go inside. However, you can definitely use the mat on its own to pad out your boot as it has plenty of cushioning for your dog for the car journey. It's also durable enough to be used outside.

Durable polyester

Size: XL 2.46 x 1.7 x 0.25m

12. The Picnic Pad Travel Dog Mat

Another great option for a roll-up travel mat. We love this because it's handmade in the UK by small business DesignedforDogs. Pick your pattern from tweed, tartan, bee, hare, Dachshund, or dotty and then add your colour choice and your very own Picnic Pad will be on its way to you. It's had rave reviews from happy customers who said the mat is perfect for travelling whether it's a trip to the pub to sit outdoors or further afield.

Six patterns and multiple colour ways

Waterproof base

Machine wash and line dry

Size: S 17" x 23" / M 20" x 29" / L 23" x 35"

Review: "This bed has been perfect on our holiday! So handy to carry around and really easy to roll back up! We used it every time we sat in a restaurant and our Dachshund went straight to sleep on it."

13. All For Paws Chill Out Fresh Breeze Mat

www.viovet.co.uk

The warmer it gets outside, the hotter it gets in the boot of your car, so when you're on a long journey or haven't left the car parked in the shade this chill-out mat will be perfect to keep your pooch cool in the warmer months. It's a springy plastic noodle mattress that allows air to flow through making it both comfortable and refreshing to lie on.

Removable zip fastened cover which is machine washable in cold water

Size: Medium L 75 x W 50 x H 6 / Small L 36 x W 50 x H 6cm

How to secure your dog in your car

If you want to put your dog crate in your boot, remove the parcel shelf and measure the interior of your car boot. Compare these to the dimensions of the crate you select. Make sure the crate is as snug as possible, the less it can move the safer it will be.

Smaller crates for small dogs can go in the back seat footwell – but again, check the measurements to be sure that it will fit snugly.

If you want to put your dog on the back seat rather than on the floor, don’t use a seatbelt to secure the crate unless the manufacturer specifically says their crate is safe for this - some are not and you could be putting your dog at risk. A safer option is to use a pet hammock and place the crate inside. This way, they won't be thrown forward into the front of the car if you brake suddenly.

What to look for in travel dog beds, travel mats and car seats

When trying to decide whether travel dog beds, travel mats or car seats are best for your on-the-go needs, there are a couple of things you should look at to help you make your decision.

Portability

Whether your chosen dog bed, mat or car seat is easy to transport is probably the biggest factor you'll want to think about. Make sure it's lightweight enough for you to pop it in the back of the car or take it with you down to the beach or to a friend's house. Look for features such as handles and storage bags to make it even easier to carry around.

Is the size of your dog bed big enough for your pooch to fit completely in? This may not be as much of an issue to consider for smaller dogs, however for larger dogs, you'll want to make sure they've got equally got enough room to stretch out as they do curl up, with all of them being able to fit inside for a comfortable ride.

Cleanability

If you've taken your pooch on a particularly muddy walk or they've had a paddle in the sea, the last thing you'll want to worry about is how you're going to get their travel bed clean and dry again. Look for a bed that can be wiped clean or, better still, has a removable cover that can be popped straight into the washing machine when you get back. It'll be an added bonus if you choose one that's waterproof or made from water-resistant material.

Whether you're looking for a travel dog bed, a dog booster seat for your car, or a roll-up mat that can double up as a bed for whenever your pooch needs proper rest, we've selected options that will suit all breeds.

Can my dog travel in the car?

Yes, dogs are allowed to travel in cars, but they need to be secure. It's a legal requirement to make sure your dog is restrained when they're in the car so they can't distract you while you're driving or injure you or themselves if you stop quickly.

There are several pet safety travel products you can use to make sure they are comfortably restrained, like a seat belt harness or a specially designed lead that can be attached to a headrest or your car seat belt.

Some may prefer to opt for a dog guard to separate them from their boot and seats, a dog car crate, or a dog cage for car travel. If your pooch tends to be quite nervous while travelling in the car, you may want to opt for an anti-anxiety dog bed to help them feel more relaxed and calmer..

How long can a dog travel in the car?

Whenever you travel with your dog in the car, you'll want to make sure to take plenty of breaks so your pooch has a chance to go to the toilet and stop for food and drink. Depending on how old your pooch is and how long they can do without needing the toilet, you should be able to travel a couple of hours before you need to stop.

The 8 Best Dog Strollers To Take Your Pup On Walks, Runs And More

The sight of a dog being pushed in a carriage instead of walked on a leash may seem peculiar at first glance, but the best dog strollers help pets with special needs comfortably experience the outdoors. Whether your pup is disabled, injured, recovering from surgery, anxious or growing older, strollers are a great tool to help them enjoy fresh air and mental stimulation when walks aren’t possible. After consulting with veterinarians and researching top-rated models, our top pick overall is the Pet Gear AT3 No-Zip Stroller , a durable, reasonably priced option that’s easy to maneuver.

The best dog strollers allow pets with special needs to comfortably experience the outdoors.

When shopping for dog strollers, keeping safety in mind is key. “It is very important that you can secure your pet safely inside the stroller,” says veterinarian Nell Ostermeier. She also looks for strollers with a bucket seat large enough that your dog can comfortably turn around, stand up and lay down. Additionally, she points out that bigger pets may have different needs: “For medium or large dogs, you may want a stroller where you don’t have to physically lift them in and out.” Lastly, you want to consider the size of the stroller and whether it folds, as some are quite large, as well as the terrain that the wheels are designed to handle. Ahead, here are the best dog strollers for trotting, jogging and toting around your canine companion.

  • Best Dog Stroller Overall: Pet Gear AT3 No-Zip Pet Stroller
  • Best Budget Dog Stroller: Vivo Four-Wheel Pet Stroller
  • Best Stroller For Small Dogs: Pet Gear Happy Trails Lite No-Zip Pet Stroller
  • Best Stroller For Large Dogs: Pet Rover Titan-HD Premium Super-Sized Dog Stroller
  • Best Jogging Stroller For Dogs: Pet Rover Run Sports Stroller
  • Best Upgrade Stroller For Dogs: Tavo Maeve + Roscoe 3-In-1 Pet Protection System
  • Best Double Stroller For Dogs: Ibiyaya Double-Decker Pet Stroller
  • Best Stroller For Older Dogs: Ibiyaya Grand Cruiser Dog Stroller

Best Dog Stroller Overall

A stroller that gets your pup from point a to point b—and almost anywhere, pet gear at3 no-zip pet stroller.

Weight: 27 pounds | Dimensions: 35 x 28.5 x 42 inches | Weight limit: 75 pounds | Warranty: 30 days

What you’ll love:

  • 360-swiveling front wheel with locking mechanism
  • Built with long-lasting nylon and aluminum hardware
  • Comfortably holds pets up to 75 pounds
  • One-hand fold

Keep in mind:

  • Some users report the stroller is bulky when folded, making it difficult to transport in compact cars
  • Not recommend for beach use

Can’t decide whether you should purchase a stroller that performs best on city sidewalk or bumpy park trails? Go with the Pet Gear AT3 No-Zip Stroller, and you won’t have to choose. It’s designed for most terrains, thanks to its durable EVA foam tires and 360-degree swiveling front wheel, which can easily handle bumps and tight corners. When you’re ready to hit the trails, lock the front swivel wheel for additional stability. While beach adventures might be out (sorry, water pups), this stroller is a great pick for nearly any other outing.

Easy-locking latches open with a simple push of a button, allowing you access to your pet without any zippers getting in the way. An elevated paw rest provides extra comfort for senior dogs or those with mobility limitations. The stroller comfortably holds pets up to 75 pounds and is constructed with durable nylon and aluminum hardware, so it should stand the test of time.

Best Budget Dog Stroller

A crowd favorite that’s easy on the wallet, vivo four-wheel pet stroller.

Weight: 12 pounds | Dimensions: 18 x 26 x 39 inches (folded: 34 x 18 x 8 inches) | Weight limit: 30 pounds | Warranty: 120 days

  • Budget-friendly
  • Lightweight
  • Multiple viewing options
  • Designed for limited terrain
  • Not suitable for larger dogs over 30 pounds

Whether you’re trying out a dog stroller for the first time or looking for a new model for your pup, veterinarian Mary Gardner emphasizes that expensive strollers aren't always necessary. Case in point: the budget-friendly, lightweight Vivo Four-Wheel Pet Stroller that’s perfect for smaller dogs. This stroller is constructed with durable materials and features three peek-a-boo mesh windows (front, back and top). According to Gardner, multiple viewing options are ideal because “some dogs like to face out, while some like to look at their human pushing the stroller,” she says. With nearly 4,000 reviews and a 4.4-star rating on Amazon, the Vivo Four-Wheel Pet Stroller is a pet-parent favorite that won't break the bank.

Best Stroller For Small Dogs

An affordable option built to last, pet gear happy trails lite no-zip pet stroller.

Weight: 15 pounds | Dimensions: 21.5 x 11.5 x 17 inches | Weight limit: 25 pounds | Warranty: 30 days

  • Built with long-lasting nylon and aluminum
  • Front wheel shock absorbers
  • Not suitable for larger dogs over 25 pounds

Considering a stroller for your petite pup (who weighs 25 pounds or less)? You’re in luck. Gardner says small dogs tend to adapt to strollers more easily because they’re already familiar with being toted around, and the Pet Gear Happy Trails Lite No-Zip Pet Stroller ticks all the boxes for parents of smaller canines. It has some of the same convenient features as our top pick, the Pet Gear AT3 No-Zip Pet Stroller, such as a zip-free easy-entry latch, removable liner and roomy storage basket.

With 6-inch and 7-inch rubber wheels, this stroller provides a comfortable ride on smoother surfaces like sidewalks. However, if you plan on venturing off-road or have a larger dog, a more robust stroller with air-filled, EVO- or gel-filled tires might be a better choice.

Best Stroller For Large Dogs

A sturdy option with a retractable ramp for dogs too large to lift, pet rover titan-hd premium super-sized dog stroller.

Weight: 38 pounds | Dimensions: 37 x 28 x 42 inches (folded: 16 x 28 x 37 inches | Weight limit: 100 pounds | Warranty: Lifetime (3-year tire replacement)

  • Backed by a lifetime warranty
  • Suitable for dogs up to 100 pounds
  • Can carry up to four small dogs
  • Retractable ramp
  • The pump-free rubber tires require less maintenance but don't absorb shock as well as air-filled tires

Lifting large or medium dogs in and out of a stroller can be a challenge, so if your pup is bigger, Ostermeier suggests seeking out a stroller that has additional entry points. The Pet Rover Titan-HD Premium Super-Sized Dog Stroller tackles this problem head-on with its innovative retractable entry and exit ramp. This thoughtful feature—combined with the stroller's durable construction and lifetime warranty—makes the Titan-HD a clear winner for large breed dog owners.

The roomy 20-inch by 32-inch basket comfortably accommodates large dogs—or, if you have a pack of small pups, there are four individual tethers that allow for a group ride. Rest assured, the sturdy aluminum frame won’t buckle, as it’s suited to hold up to 100 pounds. Plus, the removable interior pad ensures easy cleaning after messy adventures.

Best Jogging Stroller For Dogs

A fitness-friendly option that's easy to maneuver, pet rover run sports stroller.

Weight: 26 pounds | Dimensions: 48 x 23 x 40 inches (folded: 16 x 28 x 37 inches | Weight limit: 50 pounds | Warranty: Lifetime (3-year tire replacement)

  • Lightweight aluminum construction
  • Shock absorbing air-filled tires
  • Ergonomic adjustable handle
  • Not suitable for dogs over 50 pounds

This workout-friendly stroller lets you hit the ground running with your favorite furry companion, as it’s designed to give your dog a smooth ride, mile after mile. Made from lightweight aluminum, the Pet Rover Run Sports Stroller is not only built to last, but easy to push and maneuver during your jog, run or walk. The 12- and 15-inch air-filled tires cushion bumps and vibrations to keep the ride smooth. Meanwhile, the 360-degree swiveling front wheel allows for effortless navigation (though you can also lock it for greater stability). Lastly, the handlebars are adjustable to suit your height.

Best Upgrade Stroller For Dogs

A luxurious three-in-one pet stroller for urban adventures, tavo maeve + roscoe 3-in-1 pet protection system.

Weight: 22 pounds (small); 25 pounds (medium flex) 26 pounds (medium) | Dimensions: 35.5 x 20.6 x 42 inches (Folded: 12 x 20.6 x 24 inches) | Weight limit: 20 pounds (small); 25 pounds (medium flex) 30 pounds (medium) | Warranty: 2 years

  • Stroller, car seat and carrier in one
  • Two-year warranty
  • One-handed maneuverability
  • Crash safety tested against the United Nations ECE child restraint standard (R129); you can read about Tavo’s crash testing safety standards here
  • Not suitable for dogs over 30 pounds

From the makers of Nuna Baby, a top-rated stroller brand for kids, comes the Maeve + Roscoe Pet Protection System by Tavo. This feature-packed three-in-one system functions as a stroller, car seat and carrier, offering ultimate versatility for pet parents on the go. The physical product that arrived for testing impressed with its functionality and thoughtful design. The quality and safety features rival that of some baby strollers, making it a worthwhile investment for pampering a beloved dog.

This pet protection system is designed with pet parents in mind and comes with a comfortable leather handle, cup holder, storage basket, phone slot and covered treat tray. Your dog will enjoy a comfortable ride too, thanks to the well-structured bassinet with a mesh canopy for ventilation, UPF 50 sun protection and optional plush bedding. Adjustable mesh panels allow for privacy or an open view, and the bassinet is removable for car travel with a separate load leg. The system also folds seamlessly with two hands for storage and travel.

I personally own this stroller and love it. That said, it’s worth mentioning that it's not ideal for all-terrain adventures. Even in urban areas, I find I have to lift the front of the carrier to maneuver over uneven sidewalks and ensure a smooth ride.

Best Double Stroller For Dogs

A two-seat stroller with separate compartments for each pup, ibiyaya double-decker pet stroller.

Weight: 16.5 pounds | Dimensions: 38 x 19 x 39 inches (folded: 20 x 12 x 33.5 inches | Weight limit: 13 pounds (upper compartment); 33 pounds (lower compartment) | Warranty: 2 years

What you’ll love:

  • Lightweight
  • Each dog can have their own bucket seat
  • Not suitable for dogs over 13 pounds in the upper compartment and 33 pounds in the lower compartment

Adventuring with two dogs at once is no walk in the park (pun intended), but this double-decker stroller makes it a little bit easier. Whereas traditional single-basket strollers can lead to territorial tiffs, tangled tethers and leashes, this pick has separate compartments. The top deck is well-suited for small dogs under 13 pounds, while the spacious bottom compartment is designed for larger canines weighing up to 33 pounds.

The Ibiyaya Double Decker Pet Stroller folds with just one hand, which you appreciate when you're already juggling multiple dogs. Plus, the removable cabin fabric allows for quick cleaning after messy walks. The comfortable padded handle, cup holder and ultra-lightweight design ensure a comfortable walk for you, as well.

Best Stroller For Older Dogs

A hybrid wagon and stroller ideal for senior dogs, ibiyaya grand cruiser dog stroller.

Weight: 37.5 pounds | Dimensions: 39.4 x 31.5 x 42.5 inches (folded: 31.5 x 16.5 x 41.4) inches) | Weight limit: 110 pounds | Warranty: 2 years

  • Easy entry with three access points (front, back and side)
  • Ergonomic handle that can be adjusted to the user’s height
  • Suitable for dogs up to 110 pounds
  • Optional ramp available

Senior dogs often benefit from wagons due to their easy entry points. However, many wagons lack enclosures, which can stress out anxious dogs and trigger an attempt to jump out. “My own dog was a large pup with lymphoma in her spine and her ability to walk decreased in her last year,” Gardner shares. “So I put her in a large garden wagon and all she wanted to do was jump out of it.”

The Ibiyaya Grand Cruiser Dog Stroller bridges the gap between wagon and stroller. Entry and exit is similar to that of a wagon, thanks to the low and comfortable nine-inch ground clearance. At the same time, it provides the security and enclosure of a traditional stroller. It also features water-resistant fabric that's easy to clean and comes with holders for potty pads, plus a removable, washable air fiber padding core. If your senior dog struggles with the nine-inch step into the stroller, an optional ramp is available for purchase. Pet parents will also appreciate that the design is elevator-friendly for most residential and commercial spaces. Lastly, it offers some bump absorption, though it’s best suited for smooth surfaces due to the lack of air-filled tires.

How To Get Morgan Wallen Tickets

How to get ed sheeran tickets, why trust forbes vetted.

We spend countless hours researching and reporting on products at Forbes Vetted, including those for our furry family members. Janelle Leeson, the author of this roundup, is a seasoned writer who covers all things pet-related. Recently, she covered the best harnesses for dogs who pull for Vetted. Her freelance journalism career also includes rigorously testing pet products for their durability and functionality. To report on this story, she consulted two veterinarians who are familiar with canine mobility needs and health issues that may benefit from the use of a stroller: Dr. Nell Ostermeier , a veterinarian, teaching associate coordinator and instructor at The College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies and a spokesperson with Figo Pet Insurance, and Dr. Mary Gardner , a veterinarian specializing in the care of geriatric pets.

How We Chose The Best Strollers for Dogs

To select the strollers for dogs, we consulted with experts, Ostermeier and Gardner, to understand the mobility limitations and health issues that might necessitate a dog stroller. This helped us identify the essential safety and accessibility features for each situation. With those needs in mind, we evaluated top-rated dog strollers for comfort (both for the dog and the handler), durability and functionality.

What To Look For In The Best Strollers For Dogs

Dog strollers offer a convenient way to get your dog around, but navigating the numerous options can be daunting. "There are so many options out there," Gardner says. "Like baby strollers, what works best depends on your dog and family." To help you find the right fit, Ostermeier and Gardner recommend you keep these key shopping considerations in mind:

Intended Use

Consider where and how you'll use the stroller, because the type of terrain you'll be navigating will impact your choice. For rougher terrain like jogging and hiking paths, you'll want a stroller with larger, air-filled tires—which often resemble bicycle tires—for better shock absorption, such as the Pet Rover Run Sports Stroller . The frame of the stroller should also be lighter, with alloy aluminum being a strong, lightweight option (though pricier). For casual walks around the neighborhood or trips to the vet, a stroller with solid rubber tires and a more basic frame will likely suffice.

Size Of Your Dog

According to Gardner, a dog should be able to comfortably stand up, turn around and lie down inside the stroller basket. Always pay attention to weight restrictions as using an overloaded stroller can injure you or your dog and damage the stroller itself.

Accessibility

When choosing a dog stroller, accessibility features are important for pets with limited mobility and those who need extra support. Here are just a few features that can make stroller rides more enjoyable for you and your pet:

  • Easy entry and exit: Consider a stroller with ramps, like the one on the Pet Rover Titan-HD Premium Super-Sized Dog Stroller , or a stroller featuring a low step-in height, like the Ibiyaya Grand Cruiser to make getting in and out of the stroller easier.
  • Shock absorption: Air-filled tires, like those on the Pet Rover Run Sports Stroller , absorb bumps and provide a smoother ride on rough terrain. This, along with shock absorption can provide a more enjoyable ride for dogs with achy joints or those recovering from a medical procedure.
  • Added privacy: Anxious dogs might benefit from a stroller basket that has optional roll-down privacy shades.

Regardless of your dog’s accessibility needs, all strollers should provide a safety tether inside the stroller basket that connects to your dog’s harness, keeping them safe inside.

Are Dog Strollers Worth It?

Veterinarians Ostermeier and Gardner agree that dog strollers can be a worthwhile investment to help improve your dog's health and quality of life. Gardner says they’re particularly beneficial for senior dogs with mobility issues like arthritis, neuropathy, disc disease or muscle wasting. But strollers aren't just for older dogs. They can also be an essential tool for disabled dogs, injured pets, dogs recovering from surgery or those prone to overheating, breathing difficulties or anxiety. Even small dogs and puppies who tire easily can benefit from a stroller. “I’ve often seen dogs in a stroller going to a park, getting out of it to enjoy the park and then back in it for the ride home,” Gardner shares. “With the help of a stroller, they can still enjoy some of their favorite places without expending all their energy on the way to and fro.”

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

dog travel bed car

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

dog travel bed car

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

dog travel bed car

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

dog travel bed car

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

dog travel bed car

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

dog travel bed car

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

dog travel bed car

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
