M. Night Shyamalan had his heyday almost 20 years ago. He leapt out of the gate with such confidence he became a champion instantly. And then...something went awry. He became embarrassingly self-serious, his films drowning in pretension and strained allegories. His famous twists felt like a director attempting to re-create the triumph of " The Sixth Sense ," where the twist of the film was so successfully withheld from audiences that people went back to see the film again and again. But now, here comes " The Visit ," a film so purely entertaining that you almost forget how scary it is. With all its terror, "The Visit" is an extremely funny film.
There are too many horror cliches to even list ("gotcha" scares, dark basements, frightened children, mysterious sounds at night, no cellphone reception), but the main cliche is that it is a "found footage" film, a style already wrung dry. But Shyamalan injects adrenaline into it, as well as a frank admission that, yes, it is a cliche, and yes, it is absurd that one would keep filming in moments of such terror, but he uses the main strength of found footage: we are trapped by the perspective of the person holding the camera. Withhold visual information, lull the audience into safety, then turn the camera, and OH MY GOD WHAT IS THAT?
"The Visit" starts quietly, with Mom ( Kathryn Hahn ) talking to the camera about running away from home when she was 19: her parents disapproved of her boyfriend. She had two kids with this man who recently left them all for someone new. Mom has a brave demeanor, and funny, too, referring to her kids as "brats" but with mama-bear affection. Her parents cut ties with her, but now they have reached out from their snowy isolated farm and want to know their grandchildren. Mom packs the two kids off on a train for a visit.
Shyamalan breaks up the found footage with still shots of snowy ranks of trees, blazing sunsets, sunrise falling on a stack of logs. There are gigantic blood-red chapter markers: "TUESDAY MORNING", etc. These choices launch us into the overblown operatic horror style while commenting on it at the same time. It ratchets up the dread.
Becca ( Olivia DeJonge ) and Tyler ( Ed Oxenbould ) want to make a film about their mother's lost childhood home, a place they know well from all of her stories. Becca has done her homework about film-making, and instructs her younger brother about "frames" and "mise-en-scène." Tyler, an appealing gregarious kid, keeps stealing the camera to film the inside of his mouth and his improvised raps. Becca sternly reminds him to focus.
The kids are happy to meet their grandparents. They are worried about the effect their grandparents' rejection had on their mother (similar to Cole's worry about his mother's unfinished business with her own parent in "The Sixth Sense"). Becca uses a fairy-tale word to explain what she wants their film to do — it will be an "elixir" to bring home to Mom.
Nana ( Deanna Dunagan ), at first glance, is a Grandma out of a storybook, with a grey bun, an apron, and muffins coming out of the oven every hour. Pop Pop ( Peter McRobbie ) is a taciturn farmer who reminds the kids constantly that he and Nana are "old."
But almost immediately, things get crazy. What is Pop Pop doing out in the barn all the time? Why does Nana ask Becca to clean the oven, insisting that she crawl all the way in ? What are those weird sounds at night from outside their bedroom door? They have a couple of Skype calls with Mom, and she reassures them their grandparents are "weird" but they're also old, and old people are sometimes cranky, sometimes paranoid.
As the weirdness intensifies, Becca and Tyler's film evolves from an origin-story documentary to a mystery-solving investigation. They sneak the camera into the barn, underneath the house, they place it on a cabinet in the living room overnight, hoping to get a glimpse of what happens downstairs after they go to bed. What they see is more than they (and we) bargained for.
Dunagan and McRobbie play their roles with a melodramatic relish, entering into the fairy-tale world of the film. And the kids are great, funny and distinct. Tyler informs his sister that he wants to stop swearing so much, and instead will say the names of female pop singers. The joke is one that never gets old. He falls, and screams, "Sarah McLachlan!" When terrified, he whispers to himself, " Katy Perry ... " Tyler, filming his sister, asks her why she never looks in the mirror. "Your sweater is on backwards." As he grills her, he zooms in on her, keeping her face off-center, blurry grey-trunked trees filling most of the screen. The blur is the mystery around them. Cinematographer Maryse Alberti creates the illusion that the film is being made by kids, but also avoids the nauseating hand-held stuff that dogs the found-footage style.
When the twist comes, and you knew it was coming because Shyamalan is the director, it legitimately shocks. Maybe not as much as "The Sixth Sense" twist, but it is damn close. (The audience I saw it with gasped and some people screamed in terror.) There are references to " Halloween ", "Psycho" (Nana in a rocking chair seen from behind), and, of course, " Paranormal Activity "; the kids have seen a lot of movies, understand the tropes and try to recreate them themselves.
"The Visit" represents Shyamalan cutting loose, lightening up, reveling in the improvisational behavior of the kids, their jokes, their bickering, their closeness. Horror is very close to comedy. Screams of terror often dissolve into hysterical laughter, and he uses that emotional dovetail, its tension and catharsis, in almost every scene. The film is ridiculous on so many levels, the story playing out like the most monstrous version of Hansel & Gretel imaginable, and in that context, "ridiculous" is the highest possible praise.

The One World Trade Center in New York was built as a sign of freedom at Ground Zero and is now the tallest building of the Western Hemisphere. One World Trade Center is located at Ground Zero, right next to the 9/11 Memorial. Why is the Freedom Tower now called One World Trade Center? It was named Freedom Tower before but they changed the name to One World Trade Center (1 WTC) very quickly.

Precisely because it has so much symbolic meaning, the design and implementation phases took a very long time – there were various designs and conflicting ideas. The entire area around One World Trade Center is super impressive which we captured in a video as well.

One World Trade Center at Ground Zero
One World Trade Center recaptures the New York skyline and is in downtown Manhattan’s most popular business center that has established fairly quickly a new civic icon for the country.
One World Trade Center has a total of 104 floors, a gigantic lobby, and an observation platform. The observation platform of One World Trade Center – One World Observatory – opened May 29, 2015. The tower rises from a podium whose square plan measures approximately 204 feet by 204 feet, the same footprints as the original towers.
One World Trade Center has a very special architecture that connects seamlessly to the city skyline. 1 WTC comes with an innovative mix of architecture, structure, urban design, safety, and sustainability which the city is very proud of.

Who designed the One World Trade Center?
Designed by David Childs, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) LLP , 1 World Trade Center is the tallest building in the western hemisphere. It achieved the LEED Gold certification in September 2016. It rises 1,776 feet to the top of the New York City skyline. There is another name that you’ll keep hearing in regards to who is the architect of the One World Trade Center.
His name is Daniel Libeskind . His original plans were transformed by David Childs, and Libeskind has been cut almost entirely out of the process. The beautifully designed 104-story structure opened in spring 2014 with its first tenant, Condé Nast, which moved in later in the year.
The tallest building in New York City
The city’s current tallest building is indeed the One World Trade Center at 1,776 feet but is One World Trade Center taller than the Twin Towers?
The actual building is the exact same height as the original North Tower at 1368 feet but the antenna is considered a spire on the new skyscraper, which brings it to 1776 feet.
But it just didn’t happen randomly that the One World Trade Center is 1776 feet tall. It was designed on purpose because it is a number that nods to the year the United States signed the Declaration of Independence.
Buildings at the World Trade Center Site
The same area where you could once find the World Trade Center with a total of seven buildings you will today also find a complex of buildings that is called the World Trade Center site formerly referred to as “ Ground Zero ” or “the Pile” immediately after the September 11 attacks. Over 18 years have passed since New York started to rebuild was destroyed on September 11, 2001.

- One World Trade Center – The centerpiece of the new WTC stands 104 stories and 1,776 feet tall. On top, you find One World Observatory, which opened in May 2015.
- 2 World Trade Center – Still due to rise. Several murals and street art have been added to the site where the building will eventually stand. This is how it will look in the future.
- 3 World Trade Center – Opened in 2018 and is Manhattan’s fifth-tallest building (for now). It was designed by design is by architect Richard Rogers of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and has direct access to the transportation hub.
- 4 World Trade Center – Designed by Fumihiko Maki it was the first building in the historic 16-acre WTC complex to debut. It is fully leased and stands 977-foot-tall on Ground Zero.
- 5 World Trade Center – Still unfinished and so far it is unclear if it will become a residential building or a commercial tower for hotels, offices, or retail.
- 7 World Trade Center – The original 7WTC which was completed in 1987 used to be on the same site. It got completely destroyed during 9/11. The new structure stands 741 feet tall with a design by SOM’s David Childs. It opened only 5 years after the attacks and is an office building just like it used to be.
- National September 11 Memorial Museum – I actually went to the museum the day it first opened on May 21, 2014. Nearly 16 million people have visited since then. Read everything about the National September 11 Memorial Museum here.
- Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center – Still under construction and will open in 2021.
- Oculus – A Lower Manhattan landmark and the amazing work by Santiago Calatrava. It is home to the Westfield World Trade Center Mall and the topper for the WTC Transportation Hub. Total cost: North of $4 billion.
- World Trade Center Transportation Hub – WTC newest Subway Stop that sits on the former 1 Stop that was destroyed during the attacks. It is all white and features an installation by artist Ann Hamilton. You can find the text from the Declaration of Independence and the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. From there you can connect to the Path, Ferry, or other NYC subway trains.
- Liberty Park – Beautifully designed the park was constructed atop the World Trade Center Vehicle Security Center. From here you can overlook the rest of the World Trade Center site. It is now home to Fritz Koenig’s Sphere, which was placed between the Twin Towers when they opened back in the 1970s. Until 2017 it was placed in Battery Park but then they moved it to Liberty Park.
- St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church – The church is supposed to be within Liberty Park but construction hasn’t moved forward for a while now. We will keep you updated.

More things you should know about One World Trade Center
Security and safety measures were a top priority
The most important aspect of the building was its safety: a specialty steel composite that has excellent fire resistance properties and will withstand extreme temperatures was chosen for the construction. All windows of the lower floors are made from specially hardened glass that will not shatter in an explosion.
Independent ventilation systems prevent the dissemination of possible hazardous gasses, and emergency exits were designed to be extra wide. All the vulnerabilities that came to light in the terrorist attacks of 2001 have been addressed in the new building. The trauma of the collapse of the Twin Towers is not forgotten and is not to be repeated.
Tours at the One World Trade Center
One World Trade Center also makes a striking impression from the water: the building is truly beautiful, and its grandeur and presence in the New York skyline are simply phenomenal. Industry-requested TWIC OneVisit program now in effect nationwide
Under a revised process from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), mariners and others required to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) should be able to obtain the card with one visit rather than two.
In response to TWIC holders’ complaints, the TSA launched the OneVisit program nationwide in July 2014.
Under the old rules, a TWIC holder had to appear in person at an enrollment center to apply or renew the credential. Under the new process, a mariner can apply for a TWIC at an enrollment center and opt to receive the credential by mail.
“OneVisit eliminates the need for TWIC applicants across the country to make a second visit to a TWIC enrollment center to pick up the credential,” said Lorie Dankers, a TSA spokeswoman.
Depending on where they live and work, some mariners have had to travel up to 500 miles one way to reach a TWIC enrollment center, said Brian Vahey, government affairs manager for American Waterways Operators (AWO).
“This is great news for not just maritime workers but millions of workers across the country who are now in a situation where it’s not quite as burdensome to go through the process of getting their TWIC,” Vahey said.
Since the introduction of One-Visit, approximately 65 percent of TWIC applicants have elected to have the credential mailed to them, according to the TSA.
Industry leaders applauded the implementation of OneVisit, which was the result of a five-year grassroots and bipartisan congressional effort in response to transportation workers’ dissatisfaction with the process. “The road to achieving One-Visit has been a long one, but the result is improved public policy that retains high standards of security while reducing burdens on American transportation workers,” Tom Allegretti, AWO’s president and chief executive, said in a news release. “Our members and our champions refused to give up, because this program addresses a serious stumbling block for men and women seeking employment in the maritime sector.”
TWIC cards, either new or for renewed enrollments, are mailed directly to the applicant’s home. Replacements for lost, stolen or damaged cards can be mailed as well.
The new program also applies to extended expiration date (EED) TWICs. The EED program is available through Dec. 31, 2014, to help TWIC holders extend the life of their documents. The cost for a three-year replacement EED TWIC is $60, compared to the standard fee of $129.75. U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals who hold TWICs that will expire on or before Dec. 31, 2014, can apply for the extension.
TWIC holders who are not U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals, or who are eligible but do not wish to use the three-year renewal option, can apply for the standard five-year renewal.
When the three-year EED TWIC expires, all TWIC holders will be required to enroll for a standard five-year TWIC, Dankers noted.
Dankers said when the card is mailed to the applicant, it will be activated and ready to use. A mailer with the card’s preset personal identification number (PIN) will be sent separately. However, a change in PIN requires an in-person visit to an enrollment center.
If an applicant elects to pick up the TWIC at an enrollment center, then he or she can select a PIN.
Because of the burden some workers face in traveling to distant enrollment centers, Alaska was selected for an initial pilot project in June 2013. In December 2013, five enrollment centers in northern Michigan were added to the pilot.
The pilots enabled TSA to review operational, security, communication and customer service elements of OneVisit as part of its implementation plan, Dankers said.
TSA fully deployed OneVisit on July 25, 2014. According to the TSA, since October 2007, 3,063,319 applicants have enrolled. There are 1,944,130 active TWICs.

Film Review: ‘The Visit’
M. Night Shyamalan returns to thriller filmmaking in the style of low-budget impresario Jason Blum with mixed results.

After delivering back-to-back creative and commercial duds in the sci-fi action genre, M. Night Shyamalan retreats to familiar thriller territory with “ The Visit .” As far as happy homecomings go, it beats the one awaiting his characters, though not by much. The story of two teens spending a week with the creepy grandparents they’ve never met unfolds in a mockumentary style that’s new for the filmmaker and old hat for horror auds. Heavier on comic relief (most of it intentional) than genuine scares, this low-budget oddity could score decent opening weekend B.O. and ultimately find a cult following thanks to its freakier twists and turns, but hardly represents a return to form for its one-time Oscar-nominated auteur.
In a way, it’s a relief to see Shyamalan set aside the studio-system excesses of “The Last Airbender” and “After Earth” and get down and dirty with a found-footage-style indie crafted in the spirit of producer Jason Blum’s single location chillers. (Blum actually joined the project after filming wrapped, but it subscribes to his patented “Paranormal Activity” playbook to a T.) Except that the frustrating result winds up on the less haunting end of Shyamalan’s filmography, far south of “The Sixth Sense,” “Signs” and “The Village,” and not even as unsettling as the most effective moments in the hokey “The Happening.”
That’s not to say “The Visit” is necessarily worse than some of those efforts, just a different kind of animal. The simplicity of the premise initially works in the pic’s favor as 15-year-old aspiring documentarian Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and her 13-year-old aspiring-rap-star sibling Tyler (Ed Oxenbould of “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”) say goodbye to their hard-working single mom (Kathryn Hahn, better than the fleeting role deserves), who ships off on a weeklong cruise with her latest boyfriend. The kids travel by train to rural Pennsylvania to meet Nana (Deanna Dunagan) and Pop Pop (Peter McRobbie), the purportedly kindly parents Mom left behind when she took off with her high-school English teacher and caused a permanent rift in the family.
Popular on Variety
Becca plans to turn the whole experience into an Oscar-caliber documentary (proving she sets her sights higher than Shyamalan these days) and also an opportunity to exorcise the personal demons both she and Tyler carry around in the wake of their parents’ separation. Unfortunately for the kids, their grandparents appear to be possessed by demons of another kind — although it takes an awfully long time for them to grow legitimately concerned about Nana’s nasty habit of roaming the house at night, vomiting on the floor and scratching at the walls in the nude, and Pop Pop’s almost-as-bizarre behavior, including stuffing a woodshed full of soiled adult diapers, attacking a stranger on the street and regularly dressing in formal wear for a “costume party” that never materializes.
Ominous warnings to not go into the basement (because of “mold,” you see) and stay in their room after 9:30 (Nana’s “bedtime”) fly right over the heads of our otherwise pop-culture-savvy protagonists. Becca even stubbornly refuses to use her omnipresent camera for nighttime reconnaissance, citing concerns over exploitation and “cinematic standards” — one of the lamest excuses yet to justify dumb decisions in a horror narrative — until the weeklong stay is almost up.
Shyamalan has long been criticized for serving up borderline (or downright) silly premises with a straight face and overtly pretentious atmosphere, but he basically abandons that approach here in favor of a looser, more playful dynamic between his fresh-faced leads. At the same time, there’s a surreal campiness to the grandparents’ seemingly inexplicable behavior, fully embraced by Tony winner Dunagan and Scottish character actor McRobbie, that encourages laughter between ho-hum jump scares. Their antics only reach full-blown menacing in the perverse-by-PG-13-standards third act. (The obligatory reveal of what’s really going on works OK, as long as you don’t question it any more than anyone onscreen ever does.)
Even if there’s less chance the audience will burst out in fits of inappropriate chuckles, as was often the case in, say, “The Happening” or “Lady in the Water,” Shyamalan still can’t quite pull off the delicate tonal balance he’s after. Once events ultimately do turn violent — and Nana does more than just scamper around the floor or pop up directly in front of the camera — the setpieces are never as scary or suspenseful as they should be. Even worse are the film’s attempts at character-driven drama, including a couple of awkward soul-baring monologues from the otherwise poised young stars, and a ludicrous epilogue that presumes auds will have somehow formed an emotional bond with characters who actually remain skin-deep throughout. One longs to see what a nervier filmmaker could have done with the concept (and a R rating).
The technical package is deliberately less slick than the Shyamalan norm, although scripting Becca as a budding filmmaker interested in mise en scene provides d.p. Maryse Alberti (whose numerous doc credits include multiple Alex Gibney features) an excuse to capture images with a bit more craft than the average found footage thriller. Shyamalan purposefully decided to forego an original score, but the soundtrack is rarely silent between the chattering of the children, a selection of source music and the eerie sound editing that emphasizes every creaking door and loud crash substituting for well-earned frights.

Watch: An Exclusive Tour Inside Bel-Air’s $126 Million ‘the One’ Megamansion

At long last, “the One” is opening its doors to a new owner.
The 105,000-square-foot Bel Air megamansion, which took well over 10 years to build, has come across its share of logistical and legal problems over the years, but was finally sold at auction on March 3. While the original auction asking price was $295 million—itself a reduction from the $340 million listing price in 2021, and the $500 million price tag before that—the home ended up selling for $126 million. The new owner will actually shell out $141 million, which is the sale price plus the 12% buyer premium to Concierge Auctions .

This price is likely a disappointment to the megamansion’s developer, the controversial Nile Niami , and his investors, and it falls short of being the most expensive home sale in California —or even in Bel Air . But the One does now rank as the most expensive home ever sold at auction.
Now that sale saga has concluded, we’re revealing a private look at just what $126 million will get you with this video tour of the jaw-dropping residence led by agents Branden and Rayni Williams of the Beverly Hills Estates, who shared the Bel Air listing with Aaron Kirman of Compass:
The sprawling mansion is the brainchild of developer and former film producer Niami, who commissioned renowned Los Angeles architect Paul McClean to execute the larger-than-life project. Last October the property filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, so instead of listing for $500 million as was originally planned, it ended up hitting the auction block for $295 million.
While that price tag may sound outlandish, there’s no denying the home’s bevy of amenities make it unique, even among other jaw-dropping estates in Los Angeles.

For starters, the One has an enviable location—it’s perched atop a lofty hilltop and enjoys 360-degree views of the bustling city below. “Imagine being the king of the hill and really standing on a property where you’re looking down an entire city,” Rayni Williams tells Robb Report, “And all the while you have a complete compound that encompasses everything you love and everything that’s important to you.”
It’s true that the 21-bedroom property appeals to almost any hobby or interest. For the automotive enthusiast there’s a 30-car garage on the subterranean level, complete with two turntables for showcasing your most bragworthy marques. If you’re more of the fitness type, the third floor has its own gym and lap pool, plus a four-lane bowling alley, a hair salon and juice bar (great for post-workout smoothies and the like). Also on this level is the movie theater for cinephiles, the 10,000-bottle wine cellar for vino enthusiasts and the cigar lounge for those who’d rather just unwind with a stogie.
The library Joe Bryant
Meanwhile the primary bedroom alone is larger than most New York City apartments at 5,000 square feet, and has its own sitting room, massive his and hers closets and an office. And for visiting guests who’d prefer a separate building entirely, there’s a 4,500-square-foot guest house on the grounds as well.
A set of infinity pools create a sort of moat that surrounds the main home, further adding to the “castle on a hill” vibe. But it’s just one of many reasons you’ll want to spend time outdoors here. The 10,000-square-foot roof deck, for instance, has spectacular views of the city—the mansion’s elevator stops here, too, so you won’t have to hoof it up the stairs.
The master bedroom has a private office. Douglas Friedman
Obviously the One makes for a great party pad, doubly so because it has its own in-house night club. “We call it the philanthropy wing because it’s similar to something in the Pritzker Estate where they host thousands of people for charity events,” says Rayni Williams.
Put all of the above together and the home makes a lot of sense for our current real estate landscape, when buyers want as many built-in amenities as possible—that way, even if another quarantine period were to occur, everything they need is already on site.

Still, a gargantuan home like this one wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea. “Obviously it’s not for everybody,” says Branden Williams. “But for the people it is for, it doesn’t get better than this.”
Unfortunately, the One’s new owner— Richard Saghian, founder and CEO of apparel company Fashion Nova—will have to wait just a little longer to find that out firsthand. It’s expected to take several more months of construction and somewhere around $20 million to finish the home and then obtain a certificate of occupancy.

The visit ending explained: is the m. night shyamalan movie based on a true story.
M. Night Shyamalan's twist-filled 2015 shocker The Visit had audiences guessing until the very end, but is the found footage horror film a true story?
- "The Visit" is a twist-filled thriller that earned its scares through a plausible story and clever use of found footage genre.
- Despite being eerily plausible, "The Visit" is actually a work of pure fiction and not based on a true story.
- The film explores themes of aging, fear, and generational trauma, while also highlighting the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation.
M. Night Shyamalan's twist-filled thriller The Visit kept viewers guessing all the way up to the shocking conclusion, but is the found footage horror hit based on a true story? Released in 2015, The Visit follows teen siblings Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) as they are sent to spend a week with their estranged grandparents. Naturally, strange things are afoot, and the teens must learn the shocking truth about their relatives. As with all of Shyamalan's horror movies, The Visit built up to a shocking twist that many didn't see coming, but it cleverly incorporated humor in a way that left many perplexed by its tone.
Despite a largely mixed critical reaction (via Rotten Tomatoes ), The Visit was a bona fide financial success (via Box Office Mojo ) and it stands as one of M. Night Shyamalan's highest-grossing movies . Unlike many of Shyamalan's other films which incorporate fantastical elements, The Visit earned its scares by being an entirely plausible story. Visually speaking, Shyamalan used the found footage genre deftly to convey a deeper meaning, and he got genuinely creepy moments from what could have easily been goofy. The compelling mix of plausibility and realism had many wondering whether The Visit was actually based on a true story.
Every Character M. Night Shyamalan Played In His Own Movies
The visit is not based on a true story.
Despite being eerily plausible, The Visit was actually a work of pure fiction and had no connection to real life. The script was penned by M. Night Shyamalan himself, with many of the movie's more positive reviews calling it a return to his former glory. Nearly all the writer/director's films have been works of his own imagination and in an interview with Geeks of Doom he said " That is the primal thing of it, that we are scared of getting old. Playing on that is a powerful conceit ". The director would return to that theme a few years later in 2021's Old but to a less effective extent.
The Grandparents Twist Explained
Throughout the film, Becca and Tyler are unsure about the behavior of their Pop Pop (Peter McRobbie) and Nana (Deana Dunagan), who have seemingly grown worse as the story progresses. Obviously, something wasn't right about the elderly couple, but the pieces finally clicked when Becca discovered the remains of her real grandparents stashed away in the basement. It is revealed that Pop Pop and Nana are actually escaped patients from the local mental health facility and that they have killed Becca and Tyler's grandparents to assume their lives. It is unclear whether the two escapees would have posed a threat to the kids if they hadn't nosed around.
If there is one thing that the multi-talented Shyamalan is best known for it is his films' abundant use of shocking twists towards the end of his stories. Nearly every M. Night Shyamalan twist has kept audiences guessing, and The Visit was unique because it truly earned its shocking climax. Unlike earlier films which stuck a twist in just to fulfill the obligation, The Visit naturally built towards the twist, and it was a crucial part of the plot, unlike so many throw-away gimmick twists of the past.
Why The Visit Is A Found Footage Movie
Thanks to blockbuster horror hits like Paranormal Activity , the found footage genre started to expand in earnest at the beginning of the 2010s. However, by 2015 and the release of The Visit , the style had largely fallen out of favor. Despite this downturn in popularity, The Visit nevertheless opted for an approach that innovated the found footage tropes by injecting a bit of humor and eschewing the self-serious tone. From a story perspective, The Visit is a found footage movie because it is about Becca's quest to chronicle her family for a documentary, but the choice actually goes deeper.
Unlike other directors who chose found footage as a cheap way to save on the movie's budget, Shyamalan intellectualized the style by making it crucial to the plot. In the same Geeks of Doom interview, the director mentioned " The camera is an extension of those characters...It is manifesting in literal cinematography in this particular movie ". Additionally, Becca's abundant camera usage actually factors into the plot, such as when she shows the footage to her mother, which further integrates it into the fabric of the film.
The First "Found Footage" Movie Came 38 Years Before The Blair Witch Project
The significance of tyler’s phobias.
Horror movies are all about exploiting common phobias , and The Visit used Tyler's irrational fears as a chance to spook viewers and say something about the themes as well. Tyler is shown to be a bit of a germaphobe, and he also has a fear of freezing to death. While both have rational elements and point back to the omnipresent fear of death from which all phobias stem, Tyler's fears also speak to the idea that the elderly are frightening because they are reminders of death. The slow degradation of the body through aging is a lot like freezing to death, and it is clear that Tyler sees his elderly grandparents as unclean which activates his germ phobia.
The hilariously gruesome scene in which Pop Pop rubs his dirty adult diaper in Tyler's face forces the younger man to confront his fears, and it empowers him later when he finally dispatches the imposter grandpa. It is likely not a coincidence that Tyler kills Pop Pop by slamming his head in the refrigerator, as the ice box is an extension of Tyler's fear of freezing. He literally kills his tormentor with a symbol of the thing that mentally torments him.
How Loretta’s Past Affected The Kids
At the beginning of the film, Becca and Tyler's mom Loretta (Kathryn Hahn) explains that she hasn't spoken to her parents in 15 years because she eloped with one of her high school teachers when she was only a teenager. Instead of facing her problems like an adult, Loretta instead allowed her kids to act as a bridge between the generations, inadvertently sending them to live with two violent escapees from the local mental health ward. Loretta would later reveal that Nana and Pop Pop aren't her parents in one of Shyamalan's most terrifying scares , but she was away on a cruise and couldn't come to their aid.
This forces her kids to mature faster than she ever could, and they go on the offense as they are tasked with escaping from the murderous impostors occupying their grandparent's home. At the end of the film, Loretta explains her last interaction with her parents turned violent, which sheds a bit of light on why she couldn't just face up to the past. In some ways, Loretta's choices as a teenager eventually led to the precarious situation that Becca and Tyler ended up in, and she passed a bit of generational trauma on to them.
Why Becca Puts Her Father In The Documentary
Having survived the harrowing ordeal, Becca's documentary finally begins to take shape at the very end of The Visit . She is given the chance to cut in footage of her estranged father, and though Loretta informs her she doesn't have to, Becca opts to put him in. This choice shows that Becca has matured significantly since the titular visit, and she has come to the realization that forgiveness really is the best path. Loretta could never forgive her parents, and it robbed her of a chance for reconciliation. By putting her dad in the documentary, Becca left that door open for her future self and maybe her own children too.
How Many M. Night Shyamalan Movies REALLY Have Twists
The real meaning of the visit’s ending.
From a horror perspective, the ending of The Visit is all about the fear of death as personified by the elderly. Nana and Pop Pop are terrifying embodiments of the eventual degradation of the body, though they also fill the role of the conventional horror antagonist. However, from a more thematic side, The Visit is also about forgiveness and reconciliation, as the harboring of deep-seated pain can eventually lead to a bad outcome. Even if it isn't literally an encounter with escaped murderers, it is at least a path of nothing but pain and loss.

Biden in Wilmington: From arrival to traffic, here's more about the president's visit
President Joe Biden will head to Wilmington on Thursday.
According to a release from The White House, he will arrive at Wilmington International Airport and then head to the Wilmington Convention Center to give remarks on infrastructure and the environment.
Here's what you need to know about the president's upcoming visit and what to expect for Biden's arrival in the Port City.
When will Biden arrive?
The timeline of around 3 p.m. has shifted a bit due to Biden first heading to Charlotte, where he will "pay his respects to the brave law enforcement officers killed and wounded in the line of duty," according to a White House release.
Four officers wer e killed while trying to serve a warrant to a convicted felon in Charlotte on Monday.
Biden is scheduled to leave Charlotte at 3:10 p.m. and head to Wilmington International Airport, where he is set to arrive at 3:55 p.m.
He will then head to the Wilmington Convention Center, where he will deliver remarks at 4:30 p.m. before departing Wilmington at 6:05 p.m.
More: Ahead of Biden's visit, what Wilmington projects are in dire need of federal funding?
What will Biden discuss?
While at the Wilmington Convention Center, Biden is expected to discuss "how his Investing in America agenda is rebuilding our infrastructure and creating good-paying jobs in Wilmington and across the country," according to a news release from The White House.
In response to why Wilmington might be a fitting location for the discussion of such subject matter, Mayor Bill Saffo mentioned U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Reagan's previous visit to Wilmington , highlighting Reagan's discussion of national PFAS regulations.
Previous Coverage: EPA administrator joins Mayor Saffo and Gov. Cooper to announce Clean Ports Program
"I know that the administration has been very engaged in that issue," Saffo said. "They've also been engaged at the federal level with the removal of lead from our pipes," adding that the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) has been working on that matter for a number of years.
Wilmington has been on the forefront of numerous environmental issues regionally, the mayor added.
"I think (Biden) is here to make an announcement as to what that means not only for this community but for the country," Saffo said.
How has the city of Wilmington prepared for the president's arrival?
Preparing for a presidential visit requires a community-wide collaborative effort, Saffo said.
"When a president visits a community there are a lot of things that we have to work on and work with the administration and ... the secret service in planning these types of events," Saffo said. "Where the events are held, the size of the venue, the locations, the motorcade to and from the airport − the logistics involved are enormous."
Saffo said Biden's visit is historic for Wilmington.
"Obviously we are very proud to have any president arrive in our community that represents our government," noting that former President Donald Trump previously visited the Port City in 2020, designating Wilmington the first World War II Heritage City nationwide.

When will Air Force One arrive at ILM?
Air Force One will arrive at the Wilmington International Airport at 3:55 p.m. Thursday.
By Wednesday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration listed a temporary flight restriction (TFR) Thursday in a roughly 30-mile radius surrounding downtown Wilmington between 1:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. It's unknown as of Wednesday night if the time range will widen given Biden's change in schedule.
It is important to note that Wilmington International Airport anticipates minor impacts to commercial flight operations during this time as the TFR does not fully restrict scheduled commercial flights, according to airport spokesperson Erin McNally.
"We encourage travelers to check their flight status directly with the airlines for the most up to date information," reads a Facebook announcement from ILM posted Wednesday. "Additionally, travelers may want to allow extra time, in the event there are temporary road closures or changes in traffic patterns."
Air travel for general aviation users will be restricted primarily between 1:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., according to the post. General aviation users are encouraged to check NOTAMS (notices) for details.
What about security and traffic?
The Wilmington Police Department will be providing personnel to assist with the needs of the U.S. Secret Service, police spokesman Lt. Greg Willett said.
The Secret Service works closely with local law enforcement to "minimize disruptions to the public while ensuring the highest level of safety and security," Special Agent Joseph Routh said in an email on Tuesday.
As of Tuesday, Routh was unable to discuss any security specifics, but he said that "the public can expect intermittent road closures and parking restrictions as part of the visit."
Saffo referred to Wilmington law enforcement involvement with the event as "significant," noting the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, Wilmington Police Department and Wilmington's Secret Service field office have been in communication with one another in preparation of the event.
As for traffic, the Secret Service has been advised about the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge lane closures, Saffo said.
"I don't know the exact route that the president will take, but I know that they've been advised and informed about that," Saffo said. The Secret Service will "try to minimize any kind of impact to the community to the best of their ability."
One vision. One wine.
“Wine is born, then it lives. But it never dies, in man it lives on.”
The essence of time is expressed in Opus One by the character of each vintage. Place, often defined as terroir, represents the geography, the climate and the essential human element which is captured in the wine’s balance between power and finesse, structure and texture.
“Wine to me is passion. It's family and friends. It's warmth of heart and generosity of spirit.”
Rising gracefully from the vineyards, Opus One stands in subtle celebration of the land and the open space that surrounds the estate. It remains an ongoing testament to our founders’ vision of a singular wine that transcends generations.
Dear Abby: Travel suggestions? I’m tired of being the one who always drives hours to visit relatives
- Published: May. 02, 2024, 5:00 p.m.
Dear Abby: I've long lived apart from the rest of my family. I'm tired, though, of always having to be the one who has to drive hours for a family visit. What would you suggest?
- Abigail Van Buren
Dear Abby: I have been independent from my family for 25 years. I have always lived a few hours’ drive from them. (I now live an hour away from my mother and three hours from my sister and her family.) For every occasion over those 25 years, I have always visited them -- spending time, money on gas, putting thousands of miles on my car and sometimes taking time off from work. Never has anyone visited me, other than once when my sister was passing through and wanted to have lunch.
I have invited my family countless times, but there’s always an excuse. Often, it’s that my place is too small to accommodate them or that I have a roommate. I’m expected to spend my resources visiting them or go broke to have a place that can accommodate them. I am reminded of this lopsided situation every time my roommate’s family visits multiple times per year. They stay in hotels.
I’m not confrontational. I love my family, but I feel some boundaries need to be established. Am I unreasonable? If not, do you have any suggestions?
-- All On Me in Florida
Dear All: If it is not practical to continue traveling to visit your relatives, stop doing it. Do not stop inviting them to visit you, however, and when you do, tell them you know they would be more comfortable staying in a nearby hotel or motel, which is what your roommate’s family has been doing for years.
- Dear Abby: Should I help make peace? My grown niece battles with my sister, but confides in me
- Dear Abby: How would you deal with my boorish husband? His behavior is over the top
- Dear Abby: Despite efforts to bolster breast cancer awareness, many don’t know it also affects men
- Dear Abby: What can I do? My significant other is infatuated with his video games and not me

'9-1-1' stars talk Maddie and Chimney's roller-coaster wedding, Buck's 'perfect' gay kiss
Spoiler alert! The following story contains major details about Season 7, Episode 6 of ABC's "9-1-1," which aired on Thursday.
LOS ANGELES – In Thursday’s fraught new episode of “ 9-1-1 ,” Maddie and Chimney tied the knot in the most aptly perfect way possible: splayed in a hospital bed.
The couple’s nuptials were severely delayed after Chimney (Kenneth Choi), a firefighter paramedic, got amnesia and went missing the day before their wedding. Using police reports, traffic cams and hospital records, dispatcher Maddie ( Jennifer Love Hewitt ) pieced together that her fiancé contracted viral encephalitis on the job, swelling his brain with potentially fatal consequences.
“In typical ‘9-1-1’ fashion, it’s a roller coaster,” says Hewitt, traipsing across a wire-laden soundstage in a billowing wedding dress. “They can’t just show up at a church and walk down the aisle. That doesn’t happen on our show!”
How the new episode of '9-1-1' reflects Maddie and Chimney's love story
“9-1-1” has long endeared fans with its outrageous and heart-pounding emergencies, ranging from shark attacks to plane crashes to a sinking cruise ship in the Season 7 premiere, which marked the show's move from Fox to ABC. But walking across the palm tree-lined Fox studio lot on a balmy March morning, the atmosphere couldn’t be more serene: Seated between takes, extras in hospital gowns are texting, doing crosswords and swapping recommendations on kimchi burritos. (At the risk of being an LA cliché, one scrubs-clad man is buried in a screenwriting handbook, jotting notes.)
The cast is shooting the episode’s final scenes with Maddie and Chimney after he was tracked down woozily wandering the streets alone. Now regaining some of his memory, they decide to swap vows in his hospital room, inviting friends and family to watch as the 118 fire captain Bobby (Peter Krause) officiates the informal ceremony.
“Love could not wait, so we’re all here to celebrate that,” says Angela Bassett, who plays field sergeant Athena, sitting by a hospital bed between takes. “We’re off that big cruise ship for a minute, so whenever we get days like this, I appreciate it!”
'9-1-1': Angela Bassett, Jennifer Love Hewitt can't believe the 'crazy' 100th episode
Throughout the emotional episode, Chimney has flashbacks to the ups and downs of his relationship with Maddie, from confrontations with her violent ex-husband to her surprise pregnancy with a baby girl. "It's a pastiche of his entire arc," says Tim Minear, the show's creator. "Like Maddie says at the end, 'We always find our way back to each other.' That has been a repeated pattern with them ever since they got together."
After the bride and groom say "I do," wedding guests spill out into the hospital halls, chatting as they peck at small plates of white-frosted sheet cake. The prop sweets received somewhat sour reviews: “I’ve had a little bit. It’s fine,” Krause says politely.
“It’s from Ralphs," Choi adds of the local supermarket chain, cracking a smile as he spots a publicist hovering nearby. “But I’m going to say it’s delicious!”
'9-1-1' creator says Buck's gay kiss didn't 'come out of nowhere'
Thursday’s episode also includes another milestone for Maddie's brother, Buck (Oliver Stark), a once-womanizing firefighter who shared a kiss with pilot Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) in the series’ 100 th episode last month. Buck’s co-workers excitedly learn about his new relationship at the hospital, where he passionately smooches Tommy after the wedding.
“It’s one of my favorite scenes,” Choi says. “It’s a reveal for most of the characters that Buck has found a love interest he’s actually interested in. It’s adorable, it’s cute, it’s perfect, and the audience is going to love it.”
Stark likens Buck’s journey to “a hamster wheel”: “He’s been taking one step forward and two steps back, as is quite typical of being in your late 20s and early 30s, trying to find yourself,” the actor explains. “As we’ve moved into this seventh season, he’s found a way to really discover who he wants to be.”
The romance has been met with some backlash from homophobic viewers, whose hateful comments Stark responded to on Instagram last month. Minear says “Buck has been queer-coded” since Season 2, and his awakening “doesn’t come out of nowhere.” In a 2021 crossover episode with Fox's spinoff series “9-1-1: Lone Star,” Buck had a suggestive moment with Austin firefighter T.K. (Ronen Rubinstein).
"T.K. assumed that Buck was coming on to him," Minear says. The storyline "is a thing I've been toying with for a long time, and it just felt like the stars aligned."
Angela Bassett reveals the surprising ways life mirrors her '9-1-1' character
With seven seasons of “9-1-1” and four seasons of “Lone Star” under his belt, Minear says it’s increasingly challenging to come up with new disaster scenarios for emergency responders to tackle. Producers look to real-life 911 calls for inspiration .
“There was one night where something fell out of an airplane in both shows,” Minear recalls with a laugh. “In Year 1, I remember thinking, ‘How am I going to sustain this?’ A bouncy house flies away, a guy gets sucked into an escalator – you’re burning through these viral video ideas at an incredible pace.”
The current season kicked off with a traumatic, high-seas honeymoon for Athena and Bobby. Bassett, who received an honorary Oscar earlier this year, says the writers always keep it fresh with situations that are both wild and relatable.
“Interestingly enough, sometimes Athena’s experiences mirror my own,” says Bassett, who shares 18-year-old twins with her husband, actor Courtney B. Vance. That’s true “especially this year, with Athena and Bobby being empty nesters, and seeing what their dynamic is like when there’s calm.”
This summer, “my kids are going off to college, so I’m like, ‘Courtney, what’re we going to do? Are we going to travel?’” Bassett adds. They would like to vacation in Bali, Norway and Brazil.
“Just no cruises, though, please!”

'The Idea of You' is giving some One Direction fans the opportunity to relive the band's glory days
Fictional tattooed boybanders and screaming teens that appear in the upcoming film “The Idea of You” are evoking fan memories of a real band from the 2010s: One Direction.
The film, which debuts on Amazon Prime Video on Thursday, is based on a 2017 novel by Robinne Lee, which she said was loosely inspired by former One Direction frontman Harry Styles. The band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016, not long after band member Zayn Malik called it quits.
The movie follows Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the leader of the fictional band August Moon, and his romance with an older fan, Solene Marchand (Anne Hathaway). While its premise has been divisive among fans, some say that it’s “the closest thing” to a 1D reunion that they’re going to get anytime soon.
“It’s just kind of fun to be able to reminisce on what One Direction stood for,” said Katie Howell, 24.
The trailer for the movie (which set the record for the most watched trailer for any original streaming movie) made Howell and other former boy band-obsessed fans on social media nostalgic for the height of One Direction’s fame. Although all of the band’s members have launched solo careers, fans have remained heartbroken by the group’s demise.
Hollywood has been adapting fan fiction and fan-inspired literature into film for years — “The Idea of You” isn’t even the only Styles-inspired story to be turned into a movie. The “After” series, which was written by Anna Todd and started as an alternate universe fanfic about a bad boy version of Styles, was turned into a film franchise in 2019.
But “The Idea of You,” some fans say, is the first adaptation that appears to actually replicate the look, feel and fervor over One Direction. The film also plays on self-insert tropes, which means Hathaway’s character, Solene, acts as a sort of stand-in for the viewer fantasizing about being swept away by a boy band member.
[Self-insert] stories definitely have a special place in the fandom. It’s an opportunity to do that kind of parasocial imagining of what it would be like to meet or interact with your favorite celebrity.
-Ashley Hedrick McKenzie, assISTANT professor at Clemson University who has researched One Direction fan fiction
“[Self-insert] stories definitely have a special place in the fandom,” said Ashley Hedrick McKenzie, an assistant professor of health communication at Clemson University who has researched One Direction fan fiction. “It’s an opportunity to do that kind of parasocial imagining of what it would be like to meet or interact with your favorite celebrity.”
Lee, the book’s author, and those involved in the film have clarified that the fictional band August Moon and its lead, Hayes Campbell, are distinct from One Direction and Styles. Still, that has not stopped Directioners — the nickname for fans of One Direction —from drawing comparisons.
Annie Mack, who is a fan of One Direction and Galitzine, said the movie reminds her of when she was a preteen fangirl during the band's peak years.
As Directioners come into adulthood, Mack said “The Idea of You” transports some fans back to a time when their favorite band made them feel “very emotional and very passionate.”
“I look back on my One Direction memories very fondly,” Mack, 24, said. “I loved being that age and I loved being 13. It was all so magical.”
In the lead-up to its release, One Direction fans online have pulled images from old concerts and compared them to stills from the movie.
Others have praised August Moon’s singles “Closer” and “Dance Before We Walk,” because they sound reminiscent of old One Direction songs .
There’s now even an August Moon band Instagram page .
Many said they feel like the interest in the fake boy band in “The Idea of You” is demonstrative of the void fans have felt since One Direction went on hiatus.
“Things are so different now with all five members of One Direction and they’re very different,” Mack said. “And looking back at it, maybe this wasn’t the best situation for them. Maybe it wouldn’t be good if they stayed together or wouldn’t be good to have an actual reunion. Maybe all of that would be very unhealthy for everyone. So like this is kind of the closest we can get to that without it being bad for anybody.”
Michael Showalter, the film’s director, told NBC News that he enlisted Savan Kotecha, a songwriter who has written hits for numerous pop stars including One Direction, to write the August Moon songs. He also said he watched behind-the-scenes videos of One Direction on tour when crafting the August Moon and Hayes Campbell.
Showalter said that he wasn’t aware of the online chatter about “The Idea of You” among fan communities, but he got an inkling of fans’ relationship to the film when he showed it at a college film festival.
“It was all 18 to 20 year olds, mostly female audience,” he said. “They really liked the movie, but they also were laughing and reacting at certain things that surprised me.”
The reason for the laughter, viewers told him afterward, was that it was a strange experience to watch fan fiction get “elevated into a serious movie.”
For some of the viewers, Showalter said reading fan fiction used to be a “dirty secret” and watching an adaptation felt “bizarre” to them.
“There are these moments that sort of feel like, I guess, fan fiction tropes in the movie,” he said. “Those were the moments that elicited those reactions. And it was a sort of a nervous laughter rooted in some deep seated connection that they have to it that I genuinely had no concept of.”
Still, not all Directioners are on board with the adaptation. Some chafed at fan fiction adaptations in general because they view them as disrespectful of the real people they are drawing inspiration from. The “After” movies in particular were controversial among Directioners , who felt as though the toxic main character based on Styles shouldn’t be associated with the singer.
Howell said that she thinks “The Idea of You” will be a more respectful portrayal of Styles because the Hayes Campbell character wasn’t written to be a manipulative or bad guy.
“I hope for Harry’s sake, this is the last series,” Howell said about Styles fanfic getting adapted. “But I think, at the end of the day, it’s obviously bringing attention towards Harry. It’s bringing the attention towards One Direction. … Everyone is kind of benefiting from it.”

Bills C Sedrick Van Pran-Granger dubbed one of 2024 NFL Draft's 'best picks'
ESPN recently compiled a list of the best 100 picks of the 2024 NFL Draft, identifying the Buffalo Bills' selection of center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger as one of the event's strongest.

In this story:
The Buffalo Bills may have uncovered themselves a hidden gem.
ESPN’s Matt Miller recently compiled a ranking of what he feels are the best 100 selections of the 2024 NFL Draft , including a handful of Buffalo draft picks on his list. The writer didn’t just list the top 100 selections and call it a day—he instead factored in his pre-draft ranking of the prospect, the pick with which they were selected, the situation they’re entering, and other contextual elements that can make or break a draft pick.
Miller included two of the Bills’ 10 selections in his ranking; wide receiver Keon Coleman, whom Buffalo selected with the 33rd overall pick in the draft, expectedly fared well, coming in 31st on the list. The writer went on to praise one of the team’s more under-the-radar selections—its fifth-round selection of Georgia center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, whom Miller feels could challenge for a starting job straight away. He ranked the Bills’ selection of the Bulldog as the 55th-best pick of the draft.
“The Bills lost longtime center Mitch Morse in free agency and will give Van Pran-Granger every opportunity to take his place,” Miller wrote. “He's a powerful, easy-moving center with a boatload of SEC experience (44 starts).”
Good luck if you meet Sedrick Van Pran-Granger on the second level pic.twitter.com/A0LoemSFD6 — The 33rd Team (@The33rdTeamFB) April 27, 2024
A three-year starter for Georgia, Van Pran-Granger played a lot of meaningful football for a team that lost only two games throughout his starting tenure. No, we’re not creating a “center wins” stat, but he was counted on to anchor a Bulldog offensive line that’s long been viewed as one of the best in the country—and he delivered.
He’s a tenacious competitor who perhaps slid in this year’s draft due to his lack of positional versatility; he, on paper, projects solely as a center and likely lacks the versatility to play guard. This isn’t necessarily a negative with regard to his professional landing spot, however; Buffalo moved on from longtime starting center Mitch Morse in the offseason, also trading depth swing lineman Ryan Bates, who has seen time at center in Buffalo, to the Chicago Bears.

Buffalo’s current plan is to slide Connor McGovern, who flashed for the team at left guard last season, over to fill its hole at center, with the recently re-signed David Edwards figuring to take over McGovern’s spot to his left. If the Bills ultimately elect to simply make one alteration to its offensive line instead of two and keep McGovern at left guard, it may be Van Pran-Granger who takes over center duties; journeyman Will Clapp is the only other center currently on Buffalo’s roster.
Even if Van Pran-Granger does not take over center duties in his rookie year, he appears to be the center of the future at One Bills Drive. To get a potential future starter with two National Championship rings and over 40 SEC starts under his belt in the fifth round is not a bad bit of business, hence why ESPN has identified the Bills’ selection of Van Pran-Granger as one of the best in this year’s draft.
