Lorde announces new album Solar Power and world tour dates

Get ready to dance like no one's watching.

Lorde is back, and she's ready to rule your playlists.

A little more than a week after dropping her new summer bop, "Solar Power," which was streamed 30 million times in five days, the singer has announced the release date and track list of her upcoming third album, which arrives Aug. 20.

Produced by Jack Antonoff , the LP, also titled Solar Power, boasts 12 new songs inspired by the "natural world," Lorde said in a statement.

In a letter emailed to fans earlier this month, Lorde revealed details about the album and its visuals. "There's someone I want you to meet," she wrote. "Her feet are bare at all times. She's sexy, playful, feral, and free. She's a modern girl in a deadstock bikini, in touch with her past and her future, vibrating at the highest level when summer comes around. Her skin is glowing, her lovers are many. I'm completely obsessed with her, and soon you will be too… It's my divine pleasure to be introducing you, at long last, to my third studio album, SOLAR POWER."

Lorde added that the record is infused with "that infectious, flirtatious summer energy that takes hold of us all" and that it immortalizes "the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I'm outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I've learnt to breathe out, and tune in."

To promote the album, the 24-year-old songwriter recently unveiled a cheeky photo of her leaping over a camera on her website . Her pal Ophelia snapped the shot in New Zealand. She also confirmed that she'd reunited with "Royals" director Joel Kefali for the "Solar Power" video, which features her in a yellow skirt and top, dancing in the sand as she sings an ode to the warmer months. The works form "an entire cinematic universe."

"I made something that encapsulates where I'm from — my family, my girlfriends, my outdoors, my constant ruminations," she said.

Lorde also announced the dates for her 2022 world tour, which kicks off Feb. 26 in New Zealand and lands in North America on April 3 in Nashville. Her final U.S. date will be May 7, 2022, in Santa Barbara.

Lorde Announces Solar Power Album Track List, Release Date, and World Tour

Portrait of Rebecca Alter

Ah, “ Solar Power. ” Lorde’s first new song in four years was the aural equivalent of an out-of-office email on a sunny summer Friday, a flighty beach jam inspired by Cazzie David’s rich dad’s vacation house . It was a departure from the moody, profound Melodrama, and we can officially declare it’s not just a one-off single but Lorde’s whole new era. Today, Lorde announced that her third album, also titled Solar Power, will be released on August 20, finally ending our Lorde drought. She also announced that she will embark on a World Tour in February 2022, beginning in Christchurch, New Zealand, and working her way through Australia, the U.S., Canada, and Europe, before ending in Berlin on June 23.

Regarding the album, Lorde says in a statement, “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learned to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.” Sounds beautiful, although as a total indoor kid, this smacks of betrayal. Best of all, Lorde shared her tracklist for the 12-track album. We’re especially ready for Track 4:

1. The Path 2. Solar Power 3. California 4. Stoned in the Nail Salon 5. Fallen Fruit 6. Secrets From a Girl (Who’s Seen It All) 7. The Man with An Axe 8. Dominoes 9. Big Star 10. Leader of a New Regime 11. Mood Ring 12. Oceanic Feeling

Lorde, born Ella Marija Lani Yellic O’Connor on 7 November 1996, is an electro-pop singer and songwriter from Devonport, New Zealand.

Lorde signed to Universal Music Group in her early teens and was soon paired with producer and songwriter Joel Little (who has won Grammy Awards for songwriting and was the lead singer for New Zealand pop punk band, Goodnight Nurse). Little co-wrote and produced most of Lorde’s works, her first being “The Love Club EP” in March 2013. The EP reached the number two positions in national record charts in New Zealand and Australia.

A few months later Lorde released her debut single titled “Royals” and it was an instant, international hit. It even reached the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, making Lorde the youngest solo artist to have a number one US hit single (the last artist to hold to title was Tiffany and her single “I Think We’re Alone Now” in 1987). “Royals” first gained so much recognition on YouTube for its video, directed by Joel Kefali, which received over 750,000 views.

“Pure Heroine,” Lorde’s debut “indietronica” album, was released later in 2013 and predictably achieved immediate chart success in her home country and Australia. The dream-pop album also reached number three on the US Billboard 200. Other than “Royals,” singles from the album include “Team,” “Glory and Gore” and “Tennis Court.”

Lorde has also collaborated with UK house and pop duo, Disclosure, who released a remix of “Royals” (combined with Aluna George’s “White Noise”). She has also become revered as one of the most influential teenagers in popular culture, famously speaking out about feminism being “completely natural” and condemning the media for photo shopping photographs of her; even tweeting an original image of herself next to the photo shopped one, stating “two photos from today, one edited so my skin is perfect and one real. remember flaws are ok :-)”

The Melodrama World Tour Brisbane

Lorde of the Riverstage

The best time to see an artist perform is when they have less than three albums, you are pretty much guaranteed to get an awesome set without filler and no exclusions. In this respect Lorde did not disappoint and along with Porter Robinson (also at the Riverstage in February) was one of the best gigs of the year.

Melodrama is an interesting album, despite receiving critical acclaim, I often glean that some yearned for a repeat of Pure Heroine. At 40 minutes the album at face value do not appear substantial, but those will be some of the best minutes of the year, emotionally charged, unique, at times energetic and more diverse than her first offering.

Lorde opened with Homemade Dynamite, a great way to start. Magnets was a special treat, I didn’t expect that the Disclosure track would make it into the set despite it’s strong showing in the 2015 Triple J Hottest 100. Lorde weaved here own personal narrative through the set, recalling the stories behind tracks Tennis Court (a personal favourite), A World Alone and the Louvre.

Lorde covered Springsteen’s I’m on Fire with guitarist Ray Suen, and worked in 400 Lux, a seminal moment which slowed the tempo at the midpoint of the set. Paying homage to Brisbane band Powderfinger, “I was raised on Powderfinger. That was my shit,” she said before blending an intro from My Happiness into Liability.

Pure Heroine tracks Royals and Team were well received, and built the intensity to the final song Green Light, cue the confetti storm. Lorde returned to play Loveless as the encore.

On the down side, there were no tracks from Hunger Games, Meltdown or Yellow Flicker Beat could have been worked well with the set. Writer in the Dark was a curious omission.

All in all, one of the best shows of the year, on a beautiful night, and well supported by George Maple, who will be playing in Brisbane this coming February.

Lorde is revolutionary for her age. Her first album to go big is one of the few that I can listen to all the way through and love every song that plays. "Pure Heroin" is exactly right, it's so addictive. Lorde is only 17 but speaks to issues and a lifestyle that is so much more than the other teenagers making music right now. There's real depth to it, unlike Kesha or Miley Cyrus - and her voice is amazing! I saw her live in Austin earlier this year, and it was incredible - her stage presence is so delightful and you can tell she is loving every minute of her success right now. She played all the songs on her album and talked a bit about them - but not so much that you just wanted her to get on with the show. Her music is so simple but her voice is so strong and powerful that it doesn't need any fluff in it. I love how she embraces her flaws and encourages us all to do so as well. You'll find her commenting on photoshopped pictures of herself ousting the editing that was done. She also tries to be conscious of the audience she is playing to - she knows that young people, girls especially, are listening to her music and she wants to portray the message of strength and independence; this is a welcome message from the boy dependent, superficial, materialistic songs that are being made by most pop music artists. She really stands out. Doesn't try to be sexy or show the world that she's growing up, it's much more grounded than that. If you haven't listened yet, I highly recommend it. I know I'll be waiting for her next album.

Omg. Where do I start? Amazinggggg.

The show all started when Tove Styrke got on stage. She was alright. I did like her cover of liability.

Next was Run The Jewels. And they focused on 3 things, People yelling “R T J!”, middle fingers, and flashing lights that could give you a seizure. I couldn’t even understand what they were saying. They had talent though.

Then, the queen came on. She started with Sober, like blue lights. Next was Homeade Dynamite and Tennis court. Amazing. Then colorful stage for magnets. Then Buzzcut Season and 400 lux, then came a new version of ribs. Then the louvre, hard feelings, and yellow flicker beat. Then she sat down, gave a 7 minute speech, and sang both writer in the dark and liabillity. Both really beautiful. Then she got up and sang Sober ll, and Supercut. Then, came the hits. ROYALSSSS. She invited us to sing and we all lost our voices. Then came Perfect Places. With a child choir which was cute. Then the last song was green light, she sang it and before the confetti, she told us to jump, and “fucking lose it”. Then there was A LOT (almost too much) CONFETTIII!!!! Then she went off. Then came back on for the encore, It had Loveless, then a non released catchy song called “Precious Metals”, then her last song (for real) was Team. She went down to General Admission at the end. And gave everyone high fives. IT WAS AMAZING. Definitely go see her if she’s coming near you.

Oh Lorde she is not one to disappoint! Singing all the favourites from her most recent album 'Pure Heroine' and more of her latest songs I hadn't even discovered before. While performing at Festival Hall, in Melbourne I didn’t think the venue put Lorde’s talent to justice but maybe it was just the seating. I feel like Lorde deserved a much larger ‘stadium-like’ venue to allow as many people as possible to witness one of the most prominent artists in the "post-millennial" era. Only a 17 year old from New Zealand, I don’t think you can get anymore unique than that! I was worried it was going to be one of those ‘one set stage’ performances but Lorde managed to have a costume change in the middle of her hit song “Team”! Along with varying Special effects including lights, cameras and a lot of action in the background while she was singing. There was a revolving chandelier, many different coloured lights, and a screen to allow those not in the mosh pit to see her face up close, adding to the atmosphere. Her accompanying act was way better than I expected, SAFIA has now got a new number one fan. The concert overall was very memorable leaving me wanting to relive all the songs performed on the night from both acts. Can’t wait for another concert from the one and only, Lorde!

EPIC. Fireworks, smoke, flashing lights ... costume changes, short videos, chat sessions ... this was one of the best concerts I’ve been to ! Somehow it didn’t feel super super extravagant and large scale though, which I loved because it made the whole experience so much more intimate. We arrived at around 6, and because that was when the gates opened we expected people to have been already lining up for ages and we thought we would get a terrible place in the mosh pit but we were actually still so close to the front! I loved how Lorde chatted to us like friends and really interacted with the audience. She comes across as such a wonderful, kind and genuine young woman, and it was so gorgeous to watch her sing and dance her beautiful heart out. She played a lot of her old music from Pure Heroine as well which was awesome - including Royals, Team, Tennis Court, Buzzcut Season and Ribs. She also played Magnets (by Disclosure) and a beautiful rendition of I’m on Fire (Bruce Springsteen) in combination with 400 Lux. That was possibly my favorite performance of the night. Green Light was the finale and was absolutely awesome of course. I would highly recommend you see Lorde live for an amazing once in a lifetime experience!!

Oh my Lorde! I highly recommend all lovers of music to attend at least one Lorde concert - it was the best concert I've been to yet! Couldn't fault it; her tone was perfect, her dancing crazy and awesome, her humbleness astounded me especially how she informed the audience of meaning of her songs. The atompshere was buzzing! She captured her audience, with her use of the whole stage and just having a good time! The lights were great and added a good vibe to her performance. I thought it was lovely how she apologised for rescheduling her show "I'm so sorry for having to reschedule I became gravely ill in Las Vegas - mum told me I had to reschedule. I told her 'I'm going to Australia if I have to go on my own'. I also thought if I'm this sick I can't give you guys a proper performance- I wouldn't be able to dance around and get into it like I'm doing tonight!" I honestly cannot stress enough how great this show was - any age can go, sing their heart out and dance till their feet fall off. This young kiwi girl definetly has a "speeshil" (how she pronounces the word special) nack for performing and entertaining - knowing what the audience wants to see! If I was to rate it, honestly 10/10- had the best night ever!

At the center of the stage there’s a staircase on the top of a round structure. The whole thing is placed on a round platform.

During the first song, Leader of a New Regime, Lorde plays from behind a screen.

The support singers look like akward nerds dressed like The Beatles in the 60s. Their dresses are the color of the sun. Lorde's look is curated by Karla Welch.

She is really good at switching between her newer songs, with acoustic guitars, and the older ones with electronic bases.

In Buzzcut Season the support singers do a good job providing support voices. Their performance is quite staged, with them turning towards the audience only when they are singing.

It’s in this song that I realized how powerful the voice ensemble is.

Lorde’s songs, like Lana Del Rey’s, seem to describe a lazy life spent on the side of pools, just enjoying oneself.

During the songs she takes time to interact with the crowd, she reflects on what happened in Oslo last week, and she tells about her memories of visiting the city. She also shares how she got rid of stage fright.

A camera films her so that it is possible for everyone in the audience to see her expressions.

A great experience overall.

What can I not say about this queen bee? She's barely 18 years old (birthday in November) and it's exhilarating to watch her evolve. Today's pop music needs a facelift and a lot of us are counting on Lorde. She is currently touring smaller theater venues to get her feet wet. Sure, she could have accepted the offer to tour with Katy Perry and jumped right into the stadium crowd. But this is Lorde, and she already knows that she will be bigger, and she will do it her own way. For those of you who got to see her in theses smaller venues, consider yourself lucky because she will get bigger and bigger and pretty soon it will get harder to get that intimate experience. I'm one of those lucky ones and what I saw was just mind blowing. To me, she almost has that spellbinding Stevie Nicks presence. Her outfit was a simple two piece (with costume changes into different colors) yet she was more seductive than artists who show more skin.

Right now, her live performance is a bit unpolished, but what I saw was a taste of possible perfection to come. Give her two more years to work out the kinks and she will surely bring magic to stadiums across the world!

Shoutout to Lorde for being the most wonderful human being on the planet.. Only seventeen and across the world from her home of New Zeland touring?? Fricken amazing.

So I love Lorde and she made the wait to see her live sooo worth it! She played most of my favorite songs from her album Pure Heroine. The concert was crazy and up beat. Not to mention the awesome lights, fog bubbles, and confetti (WITH HER FACE ON IT) that covered the crowd!!! The venue I was at had GA so everyone was all squished together in an amazing pit of Lorde love and sweat, dancing and having the time of their lives. Definitely my favorite concert I've ever been to and I can not wait until she is back in the area so I can see her again!!! Some fun facts: All of her props that she uses on stage are from her home town in NZ The bass is sooo crazy, be ready! She spent a good six minutes just talking about her life and creating her album (Not gonna lie I was tearin up a little) It was actually the best night of my life

Lorde's first of two shows in Berkely 10/2/14 was nothing short of amazing. She sounds just like she does on her record with her powerful vocals. The atmosphere was incredible with her energetic dancing around stage, her multiple costume changes, visually beautiful setup and all around great music quality. She played her entire album along with 2 EP tracks (bravado and biting down), 2 covers (Kanye west and Bon iver), her single song No Better, and what made the night really special was premiering her single she dropped 2 days before Yellow Flicker Beat for the first time live. She reflected on the times she's been in the bay area before and made us all feel special and loved, everything about the show was great I couldn't have asked for a better show, and afterwords she met the fans, myself included making it one of the best concerts I've ever been to. She is incredibly sweet, kind, and talented. I would always recommend for others to see her live show, it'll make them say Praise the Lorde!

Lorde Announces Tour, Reveals Release Date and Tracklist for New Album Solar Power

By Evan Minsker and Allison Hussey

Lorde

Lorde made her big return earlier this month with the release of “ Solar Power ” and the promise that a new album of the same name would arrive later this year. Today, she’s officially announced the follow-up to 2017’s Melodrama : Solar Power is out August 20. Find the tracklist and already-iconic album cover below.

Along with the detailing of her album, Lorde has announced a 2022 tour. She’ll start things off in her native New Zealand in February before heading to the United States and Canada for spring concerts. Lorde’ll then go to Europe and the United Kingdom for more shows. Find her schedule below.

“Solar Power” arrived with a new music video co-directed by Lorde and previous collaborator Joel Kefali. The song was co-written and co-produced with Jack Antonoff. Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo provided backing vocals on the song. “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors,” Lorde wrote in a newsletter upon the single’s release.

According to a press release, as an alternative to being released on CD, Solar Power will be available as “an eco-conscious Music Box,” which has visual content, handwritten notes, photos, and a download card. “I decided early on in the process of making this album that I also wanted to create an environmentally kind, forward-thinking alternative to the CD,” Lorde said in a statement. “I wanted this Music Box product to be similar in size, shape and price to a CD, to live alongside it in a retail environment, but be something which stands apart and that’s committed to the evolving nature of a modern album.”

In November 2019, Lorde wrote in a newsletter update to fans that she had paused work on a new album as she struggled with grief after the death of her dog Pearl. But in May 2020, she issued another update where she said she’d started working on a new album in December.

Last year, Lorde announced Going South , a photo book of images shot by her friend Harriet Were during their trip through Antarctica in 2019. This spring, the singer-songwriter made an appearance alongside Marlon Williams during a performance in Auckland to cover Bruce Springsteen’s “Tougher Than the Rest.”

Find out where Melodrama landed on Pitchfork’s “ The 200 Best Albums of the 2010s .”

Lorde Teases Fourth Album in Rare Instagram Check-In: ‘Listening to Myself’

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Lorde ‘s excitement for her forthcoming fourth album is overflowing. On Sunday evening, the musician shared a rare Instagram check-in, captioning two photos: “Listening to myself.”

In recent years, Lorde has opted for the use of a newsletter to share her latest thoughts and relevant updates with her fans. That she chose to update them on where she’s at in her current recording process via social media itself seems to be an indicator of her excitement.

Still, the record isn’t nearing the finish line just yet. “We’re not CLOSE close you guys… i’m just getting so hype n needed to let u know,” Lorde wrote in response to an eager fan. “Start ur excitement on a low flame and bring it up to a gentle simmer .. we building stamina for this chapter.”

In the prior newsletter, Lorde revealed that she was “living with heartbreak again” and detailed recent bouts of illness and intense sadness. “Don’t worry about me, I still laugh every day, it’s all moving, even when it goes slow,” Lorde assured her readers. “I’ve accepted the mission — I have a self to recover.”

Lorde’s most recent album, Solar Power , arrived in 2021. It followed her acclaimed sophomore release, Melodrama , which was released four years prior. The six years between her first and second albums remain the largest gap period she has taken between releases.

Lorde Teases New Music For 2024

by Music-News.com on December 20, 2023

Lorde has explained when fans can expect her new music.

Lorde returned to Instagram for the first time since August to post a selfie of her listening to music on a set of headphones.

In the caption on Sunday, she wrote, “Listening to myself.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lorde (@lorde)

Her fans quickly took the post and her return to social media as a sign that Lorde was preparing to imminently release her next album.

However, she quickly dispelled the speculation and insisted her fans would have to wait a little longer.

“We’re not CLOSE close you guys .. i’m just getting so hype n needed to let u know .. start ur excitement on a low flame and bring it up to a gentle simmer .. we building stamina for this chapter (sic),” she wrote in a comment on a fan’s post about her photos.

Lorde released her last album, Solar Power, in 2021.

She debuted two new songs during her set at the Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall, England in August.

Earlier that month, she made a rare Instagram post showing her swimming in a pool in Norway.

“After the show we went swimming.. these times are beautiful and they freak me out and there’s so much to tell you,” she told fans in the caption. “No this is not the start of anything out there, just want u to know there’s a light on inside me .. show it to you soon.”

Lorde

Lorde is already hard at work on her follow-up to 2021’s Solar Power album. “It has taken me quite a while [to start working on it],” she told Ensemble magazine. “I mean, I do just take a long time… I do a lot of research, I write a lot down.”

Lorde Details the Harsh Reality of Touring in 2022: ‘Things Are at an Almost Unprecedented Level of…

Trending on billboard.

And while she didn’t share any details about who she’s working with or what sound fans can expect, it seems unlikely that we’ll hear it this year… maybe. “Anything could happen. Let’s see!,” she said.

Back in September during her headlining set at Los Angeles’ Primavera Sound festival, the singer began teasing her next era. “Who knows what will come next?” she said while running through the themes of her three studio albums. “Well, I know. And you’ll know sometime soon.”

Though Power was polarizing for some fans (and critics), Lorde told the magazine that she took the response in stride, accepting that some people liked it and some didn’t. “I think the third album is like always a real… you do sort of cross over in a way, you know, you’re not new any more, and also you want maybe different things,” she said. “I had real things I wanted that I just had to do with that album, and I feel more clear and calm for having done that.”

Lorde is gearing up for the latest round of dates on her Solar Power tour, with dates in her native New Zealand kicking off on Feb. 21 in Wellington and gigs in Australia slated to run through a March 18 gig in Perth at Belvoir Amphitheater.

Lorde spoke with Ensemble and shared that she is working on the follow-up to her celebrated 2021 album Solar Power . “It has taken me quite a while [to start working on it]. I mean, I do just take a long time… I do a lot of research, I write a lot down.”

She added, “Sort of a big chunk of work before I actually start writing music. So yeah, that’s been a really big part of it. It’s been super exciting and I feel excited about what’s coming.” Lorde also gave some hope that it may not be another four years of waiting, as it was between her second and third albums.

Lorde is also well aware that fans found the four year wait between albums two and three to be far too long.“You know, it’s my intention, it’s always my intention, to move as quickly as I f-ing can and then that ends up taking different forms,” she said. “But this one, I really am trying to. I don’t want to wait, you know, so take from that what you will.”

Back in August, Lorde celebrated the one year anniversary of Solar Power in style. She shared a beautiful music video for her song “Oceanic Feeling,” filmed on the beach and co-starring her little brother Angelo.

The video perfectly highlights the nostalgic lyrics in the song. Lorde sings, “It’s a blue day/ We could jump Bulli/ When I hit that water/ When it holds me/ I think about my father/ Doing the same thing/ When he was a boy/ When he was a boy.”

“Who you see in this video is who I truly am, or who I want to be–open, laid bare, water glittering on my skin, speaking directly to you, nothing to hide or prove, just me,” Lorde wrote of the video in a newsletter sent out to fans. “The person with me is my other half and best mate, my brother Angelo. Born on the same day five years apart, we’ve always shared a super close bond. I knew by putting him in the video, I’d be showing myself exactly as I am. Can’t be anyone else when that kid’s around.”

About Lorde

Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor (born 7 November 1996), known professionally as Lorde (pronounced "lord"), is a New Zealand singer and songwriter. Taking inspiration from aristocracy for her stage name, she is known for employing unconventional musical styles and introspective songwriting. Lorde's music is primarily electropop and contains elements of subgenres such as dream pop and indie-electro.

Born in the Auckland suburb of Takapuna and raised in neighbouring Devonport, Lorde expressed interest in performing at local venues in her early teens. She signed with Universal Music Group (UMG) in 2009 and collaborated with producer Joel Little in 2011 to start recording material. Initially self-released in 2012 for free download on SoundCloud, UMG commercially released the pair's first collaborative effort, an extended play (EP) titled The Love Club , in 2013. The EP's international chart-topping single "Royals" helped Lorde rise to prominence.

Her debut studio album Pure Heroine was released that same year to critical and commercial success. The following year, Lorde curated the soundtrack for the 2014 film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and recorded several tracks, including the single "Yellow Flicker Beat". Her second studio album Melodrama (2017) received widespread critical acclaim and debuted atop the US Billboard 200.

Lorde's accolades include two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards and a Golden Globe nomination. She appeared in Time ' s list of the most influential teenagers in 2013 and 2014, and the 2014 edition of Forbes 30 Under 30. In addition to her solo work, she has co-written songs for other artists, including Broods and Bleachers. As of June 2017 , Lorde has sold over five million albums worldwide.

Record Store Day 2024 – the full list, plus five essential albums to pick up

Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, and more

Someone taking a vinyl record out of the sleeve

Our top picks

  • The full list

Record Store Day 2024 is one the most anticipated events for any music fan, and there’s no doubt that eager vinyl record collectors have been preparing for this day since the full Record Store Day list was dropped in February.

records

Record Store Day dates back to 2007, when a small team of US indie record store owners got together to give vinyl a then much-needed injection of publicity. Now a global annual event, 'RSD' sees a range of special edition record pressings go on sale at record stores – though this year a Discogs partnership will also let you buy some of the vinyl online after the event. Want the full list of this year's special edition releases? Head to the Record Store Day website or go to the full list at the end of this page. But only once you've checked out our pick of the highlights...

The event takes place on Saturday April 20 and will see music fans around the world flocking to their local record shops to score exclusive pressings and region-specific LPs. And with Discogs’ partnership with Record Store Day , you’ll have two chances to partake in this year’s event.

Despite the queen of vinyl variants, Taylor Swift, not making an appearance in this year’s list, there’s a plethora of other albums, soundtracks, and live recordings that will be available as limited editions. But a word of caution; most record stores work on a first come first serve basis, so it’s wise to check your local store’s opening times and plan to queue accordingly.

To celebrate one of the most exciting days in music, I’ve compiled a list of five albums from this year’s Record Store Day list that are essential for any music lover’s library. Not only are these albums great from beginning to end, but they’ve each had a significant impact on fans and culture alike...

Rumours, Fleetwood Mac (1977)

Fleetwood Mac Rumours picture disc for record store day

  • Format: LP Picture Disc / 7,500 copies

Rumours was the second album I bought on vinyl after Lorde’s Pure Heroine, not because I was a huge Fleetwood Mac fan at the time, but because it’s an album I knew was quintessential to any collection.

This album was conceived at a time when the band’s members couldn’t bear to be in the same room as each other. Love complications between Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham served as one of the driving forces behind the album’s brutally honest lyricism in songs like Dreams and Second Hand News , alongside John and Christine McVie's divorce.

Its raw emotion is the reason why it’s still loved by music fans nearly 50 years after its release, and at Record Store Day 2024, it’s being released once again but in picture disc format.

Live at SoFi Stadium, The Weeknd (2023)

A Record Store Day 2024 pressing on Live at SoFi Stadium by The Weeknd (2023)

  • Format: 3 x LPs / 7,500 copies

Dawn FM was one of the most memorable albums of 2022, but it was The Weeknd’s sold-out After Hours til Dawn stadium tour that showed his powerhouse status.

Live albums can be hit or miss, depending on how the artist plays around with the arrangement of their studio songs – but Live at SoFi Stadium is a live album I find myself reverting back to now and then. Not only is the setlist packed with catchy oldies like The Hills and Wicked Games , but its songs like Sacrifice that show how hard a song can hit when played live. That’s all down to its responsive bass and elongated intro that perfectly builds suspension before the beat drops.

Paranoid, Black Sabbath (1970)

The Record Store Day 2024 pressing of Black Sabbath's Paranoid

  • Format: LP / 4,000 copies

The oldest entry in our list comes from Black Sabbath and their second studio album Paranoid , which is regarded as one of the most influential albums in heavy metal. And it’s back for Record Store Day 2024, over 50 years since its release on a vibrant pink splatter vinyl.

Much like Rumours , Black Sabbath’s Paranoid has cemented itself as a vinyl record staple but for its own reasons – one being that it set the gold standard for the heavy metal genre. It houses several of Black Sabbath’s most credited singles from the title track, to Iron Man and War Pigs , which still make for great additions to blockbuster movie soundtracks.

Tough Love, Jessie Ware (2014)

Jessie Ware Tough Love white Record Store Day pressing

While I lean more towards Ware’s neo-disco and funk records What’s Your Pleasure? (2020) and That! Feels Good (2023), those albums would not exist if it weren’t for her early work.

The production on Tough Love is very early-to-mid 2010s coded, but the subtlety of funky bass guitars and string accompaniments hint at the direction Jessie Ware has been headed all this time. For Record Store Day 2024, Ware brings you the 10th anniversary edition of the album, featuring 2 LPs pressed on solid white vinyl with bonus tracks.

Cracker Island, Gorillaz (2023)

Gorillaz Cracker Island pink Record Store Day pressing

  • Format: 2 x LP / 8,500 copies

2023 didn’t live up to the albums that 2022 gave us, but Gorillaz’s eighth studio album Cracker Island was one of my saving graces that year – after Lana Del Rey and Caroline Polacheck, of course.

Cracker Island is very much an ‘LA-themed’ album, with topics such as technology, influencer culture, and the internet building the foundation of the album’s message. But it’s the album’s features that make it a stand-out record, one that invites the musical influences of funkier artists like Thundercat and Tame Impala, not to forget the legendary Stevie Nicks on one of my favorite songs, Oil.

The deluxe edition of Cracker Island is out this Record Store Day, with six additional tracks and alternative cover art pressed on pink and magenta vinyl.

After a massive slump during COVID , the concert industry is again sh-boom, sh-booming! The gross for the top 100 North American tours in 2023 reached $6.63 billion, up 39.5 percent over 2022, with attendance nearly doubling, to 15,008 per show, according to Pollstar.

And this year is shaping up to be another box office blowout. Despite the national outrage over price spikes for eggs, airfare and gas , music lovers seem immune to ticket shock. Ticket prices climbed 22 percent last year, to an average of $135.88, compared to $111.49 in 2022. And the trend is pointing skyward.

Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour and Beyonce’s “Renaissance World” tour ranked first and second last year, but boomer acts remain the tour circuit’s lucrative and reliable summer tentpole, delivering packed arenas and sheds year after year as fans flock to relish the oldies and rekindle the past.

Here are the acts to catch this sunny season.

Heart (April 20–May 24, Aug. 10–Nov. 22)

Sisters Ann Wilson, 73, and Nancy Wilson, 70, haven’t released an album since 2016’s Beautiful Broken , but they have decades of hits, including “Magic Man,” “Barracuda,” “These Dreams” and “Alone,” to draw from on their “Royal Flush” tour . Cheap Trick opens.

Kenny Chesney (April 20–Aug. 23)

After hitting arenas last year, country star Chesney, 56, has booked 18 stadiums for shows with openers including the Zac Brown Band, Megan Moroney and Uncle Kracker, his duet partner on chart-topper “When the Sun Goes Down.” All but one of the shows are on Saturdays.

Billy Joel (April 26–Nov. 9)

The Piano Man, 74, has scheduled only 13 dates , four of them at New York’s Madison Square Garden, so ticket stampedes are likely. Fans are curious to know if “Turn the Lights Back On,” Joel’s first single in 17 years, will be added to his hit-heavy repertoire.

Stevie Nicks (May 3–June 21)

She’s been performing crowd favorites “Landslide,” “Dreams,” “Rhiannon” and “Edge of Seventeen” as well as Tom Petty hits in honor of her late friend.

George Strait (May 4–July 20, Dec. 7)

A touring juggernaut, honky-tonk country singer-songwriter Strait, 71, resumes the record-breaking stadium tour he kicked off in 2023. He’s joined by Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town. The King of Country serves up “his own Eras tour, leading a well-curated, decades-spanning set of songs,” according to  Billboard .

At 31 songs, Taylor Swift's new album is way too long. Is the streaming era to blame?

  • Taylor Swift released "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology" on Friday.
  • The surprise double album contains 31 new songs. Even as a fan, it's too much to process.
  • Swift is famously prolific, but it's also a symptom of the streaming era's more-is-more mentality.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift's album release days should be days of celebration. Instead, I woke up this morning with a vague sense of disquiet, somehow wishing I'd gotten fewer new songs from my most-streamed artist of all time.

At midnight on Friday, Swift unveiled her much-anticipated new album "The Tortured Poets Department" — a 16-track odyssey through her recent heartbreaks and wildest romantic whims , dense with personal revelations and intricate lyrics.

It's a lot to parse, more than any fan could hope for. But just as I was getting ready to sleep, Swift was only getting started.

At 2 a.m., she released an extended version of the album with 15 additional tracks, almost doubling its length.

Attentive fans had anticipated a late-night surprise of some kind, but hardly anyone had prepared for one of such magnitude. "In the past 3 hours she has released more songs than Lorde has in the past decade," one listener observed on X . That's not an exaggeration.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

I already felt it'd take multiple business days for me to process the meta implications of "Clara Bow," let alone two full hours of Swift's most verbose work to date. Instead of going to bed contented, I suddenly felt squirrely and overwhelmed. In a 31-song tracklist, none of them have the space to breathe.

Now, before you accuse me of aimless hating or call me ungrateful, allow me to enter my credentials into evidence: The first time I heard "Our Song," I was 12 years old and instantly hooked. According to Spotify, I've spent the equivalent of several days listening to " Folklore ." I went to The Eras Tour and cried.

Related stories

So yes, as a Swiftie, I know the party line. We're lucky that our favorite artist is so prolific, so generous with her musings, while others haven't released new albums in eight years. (Looking at you, Rihanna .)

It's true that Swift's work ethic is a thing to behold. It's a point of both pride and pain in her new album: "I cry a lot, but I am so productive / It's an art," she sings on "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" with self-deprecating swagger.

Indeed, "The Tortured Poets Department" is Swift's eighth album (including rerecords) in less than four years. Her constant whirlwind of activity is part of what's propelled her to supermassive stardom. It's all but guaranteed that there's always a theory online about her next release date, or another rabbit hole to fall down.

But in that sense, is there not a little too much to unpack? I can't be the only one who feels a little dizzy. In fact, I know I'm not. Another one of my Swiftie-certified friends shared with me that she's "ignoring the deluxe songs for now" because the standard edition of "Poets" is already enough to digest.

Surely, this can't be the ideal outcome for Swift's strategy: To overwhelm her loyal fans with such an opulent feast of music that some of us are full, rather than hungry for more.

Of course, Swift is far from the only artist who's released a bloated project, and these days, the streaming era is largely to blame . It's a simple concept: The more songs you have, the more streams you get. The more streams you get, the more money you make. Thus, albums have been getting longer and longer for years .

In this pragmatic pursuit of profit, artistry is bound to suffer. Potential hits get lost in the shuffle.

Worse still, the art of creating a cohesive tracklist becomes devalued. Why exercise discernment when it's better business to release the would-be scraps?

As a Swiftie, I find this to be especially obvious today of all days. The latter half of her double album contains some of the brightest gems, like "I Look in People's Windows" and "The Prophecy." But instead of getting their own moments to shine, they've been relegated to track slots 25 and 26 in a two-hour deluxe edition. They won't be included in CDs or vinyl copies. Casual fans may never even hear them, and those who do may be too zoned-out to appreciate them.

Swifties have demonstrated a knack for bringing delayed justice to bonus tracks, from "New Romantics" to "Right Where You Left Me" and " Would've, Could've, Should've ," which have all become fan favorites over time. But fans shouldn't need to root through albums like vinyl crates; that's what the DJ gets paid to do. Curation is an art form, too.

In Swift's case, she may be too big to fail commercially . But an artist is never too big to improve her craft.

Taylor Swift turns heel, owning her chaos and messiness on ‘The Tortured Poets Department’

A woman.

Taylor Swift has spent years warning us not to believe everything we hear about her. As the biggest star of pop music’s parasocial age, she argues that the facts of her existence are constantly warped by gossip and misinformation, which is one reason the Easter eggs and coded messages she’s long built into her work have helped create such a tight bond between her and her fans. Pay close enough attention, the thinking goes, and her art will always tell you the truth.

Except when it doesn’t.

Toward the end of her juicy new album, “ The Tortured Poets Department ,” Swift unloads a sparky electro-pop song called “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.” In the song she essentially admits that last summer, as she was crisscrossing the country on her record-breaking (and far from finished) Eras tour — a show centered on her constantly living her best life — the singer was actually falling apart inside.

“They said, ‘Babe, you gotta fake it till you make it,’ and I did,” she sings over a whooshing groove that feels like it’s slowly picking up speed, “Lights, camera — bitch, smile / Even when you wanna die.” These are the makings of a very sad song, but “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” isn’t sad at all; it’s crisp, propulsive, almost ecstatic. The point isn’t that she suffered through this experience — it’s that she soldiered through it. “I’m so depressed I act like it’s my birthday every day,” she crows in her perkiest voice, explaining why in the next line: “I’m so obsessed with him but he avoids me like a plague.”

Swift’s 11th studio LP, released at midnight Eastern time, follows a busy period in the 34-year-old’s personal and professional spheres: Beyond launching the Eras tour, which itself followed 2022’s hugely successful “Midnights” album, Swift — deep breath here — broke up with Joe Alwyn, the English actor with whom she was in a romantic relationship for more than half a decade; had a reported dalliance with Matty Healy of the 1975 that ended amid an uproar over offensive comments he made about Ice Spice ; notched insane commercial numbers with re-recordings of two of her older albums; took the Eras production into movie theaters; and, oh, yeah, started dating Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs before his team won Super Bowl LVIII in February.

Entertainment & Arts

Taylor and Travis’ whirlwind romance is the love story we’ve been waiting for

How did an unlucky-in-love pop star and a good-natured tight end become America’s sweethearts almost overnight? The obsession runs deeper than fame, our columnist writes.

Jan. 4, 2024

Its sound pitched somewhere between the synth-soaked “ Midnights ” and 2020’s rootsy “ Folklore ,” “Tortured Poets” touches on all this, not least the split with Alwyn, whom she portrays in songs like “So Long, London” as a cold and disinterested partner. “I stopped trying to make him laugh / Stopped trying to drill the safe,” she sings. She also details the link-up with Kelce, whose NFL victory she evokes in “The Alchemy”: “Trying to be the greatest in the league / Where’s the trophy? / He just comes running over to me.”

Yet this isn’t the breakup album — or the new-love album — you might’ve expected. Swift doesn’t portray herself precisely as a victim as she did in old tunes such as “Dear John” or “All Too Well,” to name two of her masterpieces about unscrupulous men; nor is there anything dewy-eyed about “The Alchemy,” which likens falling for a new guy to a chemical imbalance. The LP turns out to be something of a heel turn; it’s got a proudly villainous energy as Swift embraces her messiest and most chaotic tendencies. This mind-set comes to light particularly in a handful of songs that appear to be about Healy, the edgelord rock star whom she alternately roasts as a selfish junkie in “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and describes as the only guy crazy enough to match her in the title track.

“But Daddy I Love Him” is the album’s finest cut: a garment-rending folk-rock melodrama in which Swift seems to excoriate her audience for its disapproval of her and Healy’s affair. “I’d rather burn my whole life down than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning,” she sings, going on to compare her pearl-clutching fans to “judgmental creeps” and “vipers dressed in empaths’ clothing.” In a time of stan culture run amok, it’s thrilling to hear a superstar address her followers this way — and wild to imagine the response among those she’s relied on to fork over untold sums for concert tickets and collectible vinyl editions of her records.

Jack Antonoff, pop music’s production king, on Taylor Swift, his new album and the genre that’s ‘about to blow’

Ahead of Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ and a new album by his band Bleachers, Jack Antonoff talks about ‘starting to take some of my things to the Container Store in my head.’

Feb. 28, 2024

In its cheerful bad vibes, “Tortured Poets” registers as a clean break from the therapized self-care pop heard lately from the likes of Ariana Grande and Kacey Musgraves . Swift isn’t seeking betterment in these songs about emotional trauma and its aftermath; if anything, she’s taking a perverse satisfaction in her unwillingness to learn someone else’s lessons. (In a funny twist, the A-list pop star she’s most closely aligned with right now is her frenemy Olivia Rodrigo , whose “Guts” maps a similar emotional terrain.)

We’ve encountered this Taylor before: More than anything she’s done since, “Tortured Poets” feels like the spiritual successor to 2017’s “Reputation,” which took a devious glee in dealing with the fallout of her feuds with various famous people. Indeed, many fans thought she intended to announce her “Taylor’s Version” remake of “Reputation” at February’s Grammy Awards, where she won album of the year for a record fourth time with “Midnights” ; wearing black and white à la “Reputation’s” cover, she instead revealed that she’d made “Tortured Poets,” whose artwork shares a color palette with the earlier LP.

As on “Reputation,” Swift delights in depicting herself as the bad guy, as in “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?,” where she insists, “I was gentle till the circus life made me mean.” And that happy participation in pop’s celebrity death match is a crucial distinction from recent work by Billie Eilish and Lorde, who seem perpetually on the lookout for an escape from the highly scrutinized lives they’ve created. “I cry a lot, but I am so productive,” Swift sings in “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” which ends with a flex — “Try and come for my job” — as chilling as it is hilarious.

Joni Mitchell, 1974; Taylor Swift, 2022; and Stevie Wonder, 1974.

Here’s how Taylor Swift’s prolific run of albums stacks up against the all-time greats

‘Midnights’ will be Swift’s fourth new album in as many years (six including her remakes of older LPs). Her only competition? Prodigious legends from the ‘70s.

Oct. 18, 2022

All this lore — it’s a lot. Yet “The Tortured Poets Department” also showcases Swift’s gifts as a songwriter, musician and producer. Her melodies are sticky and her arrangements grabby; working in the studio with Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, she’s honed an electro-acoustic style that’s instantly identifiable (even if that’s sometimes because she recycles a melodic figure she’s used before). Post Malone’s scratchy croon adds a welcome wrinkle to the album’s opener, “Fortnight,” while Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine ups the theater-kid intensity of “Florida!!!”

lorde tour 2024

As a singer, Swift explores the sultrier lower depths of her range in “Fresh Out the Slammer” and the Fleetwood Mac-ish “Guilty as Sin?”; as a lyricist, she leans into detail in a way she didn’t quite on “Midnights,” fondly recalling a conversation with maybe-Healy in the title track where the two of them “declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist” (!) and perfectly capturing the mid-30s position in “Florida!!!” with a line about how “my friends all smell like weed or little babies.”

“Tortured Poets” closes with the slow-and-low “Clara Bow,” titled after the early-cinema It girl, in which Swift thinks through the all ways that show business has been chewing up — or trying to chew up — beautiful young women for the last 100 years. It starts with Bow, then moves up to Stevie Nicks before landing on someone who looks in this light like … Taylor Swift, which is truly a name you haven’t heard pronounced until Taylor Swift herself says it.

“You’ve got edge she never did,” the song’s narrator tells the woman — one more provocation on an album full of them.

  • Vivid Seats has similar pricing to SeatGeek, with tickets starting at $1,000 in the U.S. and Canada. For her European shows, prices begin a little under $400.
  • Swift’s three shows in Dublin, Ireland (taking place from June 28 to 30) aren’t available on Ticketmaster, StubHub or SeatGeek, but they are ready for purchase on TicketNetwork . Prices start around $350.
  • Taylor Swift’s website also links out to AEG Presents , which takes users to AXS for several of her European shows. Unfortunately, many tickets are sold out on that reseller platform.

Tour de Romandie 2024 route

T he Tour de Romandie returns for six days of racing across the high alpine mountains of Switzerland from April 23-28, 2024. The WorldTour event serves as a proving ground for teams headed to the first Grand Tour of the season, the Giro d’Italia.

A total of 657.1km kilometres of racing includes 17.7km of time trialing, starting with a 2.28km prologue and then a 15.5km mid-race race against the clock. Romandie packs in 10,989 metres of elevation gain across the two time trials and four road days, including two mountaintop finishes on stages 2 and 4.

The week begins with a flat race against the clock with a 2.28km Prologue in Payerne, which sits to the east of Neuchâtel Lake in Switzerland. It is a sprint as compared to the 6.8km opening day last year. The opening section begins on Rue du Stade. The middle section of the course runs along Qui de la Broye along the Broye river and will have to make two quick 90-degree turns in a narrow, small section of Grand Rue to head to the final 1.2km with a city centre loop and then the finale back on Grand Rue for the finish.

The second day of racing is stage 1 and begins with a short circuit in Château d’Oex and sets off for a total of 165.7km. Across the first 73km is one categorised climb at Sorens, that averages 7.3% with a section at 15%. From there, riders begin finish circuits of 40.3km each around Fribourg, which is fresh territory for this host venue, which last hosted a time trial in 2021. The circuit has category 3 climbs at Arconciel (2.2 kilometres at 5.9%) and Lorette (1.1 kilometres at 10.4%), each done twice before the final loop. From the top of the climb of Lorette, which has a section reaching 20% gradient, riders will be able to see the town below. Across the final 35km, a third trip up Arconciel then leads to the final 10km for the finish in Fribourg on Boulevard Pérolles.

Stage 2 begins where the previous day ended in Fribourg with 171km on tap in a southerly direction to Salvan-Les Marécottes. The first half of the route is rolling and then it is all about just two climbs - Les Mosses (13.4km at 4.1%) with 56km to go and a summit finish to the ski station to Les Marécottes (7.8km at 7.3%). After descending Les Mosses, the riders can shake out the legs along the Rhône river to make the approach to the final climb, with pitches that reach 16%, and the first summit finish of the week.

For a second consecutive year, the ITT is slotted in the middle of the week, this one 3km shorter than 2023. The stage 3 time trial is 15.5km rolling route that makes a counter-clockwise loop on the east side of Oron. The start is on Route de la Condémine with a steady incline to the intermediate time check after passing through the town of La Rogivue with 8km to go. The course has just a pair of tight corners headed back to Oron, with a final sharp corner with 500 metres to go on Route de Palézieux to stop the clock.

Saturday is the queen stage, stage 4 , with 3,536 metres of elevation gain across 151.7km. There are five categorised climbs in all, the final one being a mountaintop finish at Leysin. The first ascent begins after the opening 35km, a long 8.9km climb across Ovrtoninaz, with an average gradient of 9.7%. Once cresting the top, the route leads back through Saillon and then follows the Rhône river north towards Martigny. The flat stretch of a little over 20km then hits a short, sharp hill at La Rasse (2km at 8.6%).

After passing through Massongex, Les Rives (9.8km at 5.7%) and Les Giettes (4km at 8.5%) are back-to-back climbs leaving 45km to the finish. The route goes back through Massongex and soon hit a section with a small 1.1km climb with a 9.5% gradient. But the final 14km averages 6% and form a wall to the finish in Leysin, which last hosted the Tour de Romandie in 2017.

Stage 5 is set in the Geneva metropolitan area with a rolling route of 150.8km that begins and ends in Vernier. From the start, the main route is a 35km circuit completed four times, with one climb in the middle. A third-category climb, Dardagny is 1.5km long and averages 4.4%. On the final lap, the peloton then heads back into Vernier, racing the 10km section of road that was used for a neutral start.
