The Bamurru Plains Lodge in Kakadu, Northern Territory, Australia

At Bamurru Plains you can experience the beauty of the Kakadu wilderness without sacrificing luxury © Tourism Northern Territory

When you think of luxury safaris, Australia may not immediately spring to mind. But with vast landscapes, incredible wildlife and accommodation spots so remote you can only access them by plane, Australia has a host of once-in-a-lifetime wilderness experiences you need to experience when you head Down Under . Here's our pick of the best.

Bamurru Plains, Kakadu, Northern Territory

Kakadu is one of the most magical places in Australia, a country fertile with ancient lore. Bamurru Plains , a lodge surrounded by Kakadu’s northern floodplains, offers access to the magic of this wilderness with added luxury. Built and operated to be as ecologically sensitive as possible, it brings guests into the world of magpie geese, herons, jabiru and thousands of other wetlands species. Bamurru’s ten camp-safari rooms omit distractions such as TVs and telephones to focus on luxuries such as super-comfortable beds and quality Australian cuisine and wines. Fishing trips, crocodile safaris and guided tours further afield in Arnhem Land’ s ancient rock-art galleries are only some of many diversions on offer.

El Questro Homestead, Kimberley, Western Australia

First Nation Australians have lived amongst the ancient red rocks of the Kimberley for over 65,000 years. Geologically and culturally ancient, it’s one place you’ll feel you’ve found the true “soul” of Australia. Perched on a dramatic green lawned clifftop at the heart of 700,000 remote acres, El Questro Homestead delivers a luxury experience amongst this unique wilderness. Sacrificing nothing in terms of top-notch food, wine and accommodation, it also offers various ranger-led experiences. Spot rock wallabies and Johnston’s crocodiles (also known as freshwater crocodiles) in the 3km-long (1.8-mile) fresh waterhole of Chamberlain Gorge one day, the next you might snap dancing brolgas, rare Gouldian finches or any of the 100 other bird species that make the park their home.

An aerial view of two people on top of Mt Amos overlooking Wineglass Bay in Tasmania

Saffire, Freycinet National Park, Tasmania

Freycinet , Tasmania’s oldest national park, is also one of its most ecologically significant. Tourists flock to Instagram drawcards such as Wineglass Bay , but if you’re interested in a deeper engagement with the incredible flora, fauna and landscapes here (without sacrificing comfort) book a stay at Saffire . This architecturally stunning resort is nestled in thickly forested Coles Bay. If you can tear yourself away from your luxury suite, complementary experiences include guided walks to Wineglass and other ravishing bays and capes nearby, encounters with the endangered Tasmanian devil, and a “Connection to Country” walk with Mick Quilliam, an expert guide in the culture and history of the Indigenous custodians of Oyster Bay.

A scientist photographs a whale shark for marine research in Ningaloo Reef, Australia

Sal Salis, Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia

Ningaloo Reef is synonymous with one of Australia’s most exhilarating wildlife experiences — swimming with whale sharks. Spend a night or two here at Sal Salis and you’ll be staying right on the coast in luxury eco tents with unbroken views of the Indian ocean shore, and the world’s largest Heritage-listed fringing reef, just beyond. Mid-March to July is when the whale sharks – at up to 12m (39ft) long the world’s largest fish – visit Ningaloo. True gentle giants (and plankton feeders), they’ll swim placidly alongside visiting divers, as well as the turtles, dugongs, rays and dolphins that also call the area home. From June to October, thousands of humpback whales migrate north from Antarctica . Keep your eyes on the waterline over breakfast in the central lodge and you may see one breaching the waves.

Lizard Island Lodge, Lizard Island, Queensland

Whose Australia bucket list doesn’t include the Great Barrier Reef ? And what better way to see it than from Queensland’s most northerly luxury resort on tropical Lizard Island ? Twenty four almost undisturbed, blissful beaches ring the remote island, a short flight from Cairns , that is home to 1000 hectares of national park. Private villas and suites boasting every luxury are often steps from the beach and the reefs beyond. Snorkel straight from the shore or take the dive boat MV Serranidae to see the wider reef and the cod, turtles and colorful reef fish that call it home.

The homestead of the Arkaba Conservancy in South Australia with the Flinders mountains in the background

Arkaba, Flinders Ranges, South Australia

A select handful of guests sharing 60,000 acres of gob-smacking South Australian wilderness whilst lapping up luxury? That’s what Arkaba Homestead , a former sheep station dating to the 1850s, offers. Preserving its period beauty hasn’t hampered its luxe development — upcycled Australian fittings are complemented by quality beds, air-conditioning, a wet-edge pool and fine food served under the verandah on an old wool-classing table. Activities such as walks along the Arkaba Creek, 4WD safaris in the Flinders Ranges National Park and cultural tours with local Adnyamathanha guides are just some ways to spend your days. By night, the views of the Milky Way in this remote desert location may well be the best you’ll ever encounter. Prepared to be astonished.

Silky Oaks Lodge, Daintree River, Queensland

The Daintree National Park sits atop Far North Queensland ‘s list of “must-sees”. Over 1200 sq km of Heritage-listed rainforest, it’s a teeming trove of natural wonders and Indigenous culture. And what better base to explore it than the luxury treehouses of Silky Oaks Lodge , set on the forested banks of Mossman Gorge River, one of the park’s outstanding attractions. Don’t miss heritage walks with Kuku Yalanji guides, the area’s traditional custodians; sunrise yoga sessions to the sound of native birdsong; and three-to-five-hour guided walks through the virgin Daintree itself witnessing jungle wildlife like treefrogs, snakes, geckos and crocodiles.

Home to a massive list of wildlife including platypuses, possums and, unsurprisingly, Kangaroos.

With the social areas open to the meandering mossman river below there’s a strong connection to nature- a truly immersive experience.

Australia Safaris

Renowned for its quantity of endemic species that you won’t find anywhere else in the world, this behemoth of a country offers harsh and complex environments coupled with huge expanses where you won’t see another person for days on end. The sixth-largest country in the world, Australia is formed of six states; including the island territory of Tasmania. Each State is unique in its own weird and wonderful way with species that are not only native to the continent but also highly complex in their physiology and ecological behaviours. Prepare to spend days in vast expanses to get up close and personal and be prepared to work hard to find the wildlife – Australia is not like the African savannahs where sometimes the wildlife appears to be on-demand. Coastal locations that play home to some incredible marine species are also in off-the-beaten-track locations so factoring in journey time is essential.

Top 10 Safari Vacations in Australia and the South Pacific

"Fraser" by EVC2008 via Flickr Creative Commons

This part of the globe boasts some of the most remote areas, deserts and bizarre collections of fauna in the world. Travel here can also be pretty dangerous and rough so bring your wits and fortitude for journeys of a lifetime. A safari across Australia gets you up close with crocs and dingoes, dives you amongst the marine animals of Fiji and introduces you to New Zealand’s amazing birds and whales.

  • Kakadu National Park Don’t take any inspiration from Steve Irwin; never smile at a crocodile, particularly these saltwater menaces in the superb wilderness of Kakadu. Take a boat safari and marvel at the bird life and wetlands from the safety outside the water.
  • Fraser Island, Queensland Grab a 4wd and safari over to this amazing sand island taking in wildlife such as dingo, wild brumbies (horses), the odd snake, echidnas and abundant bird life. Cute and cuddly these animals might look but dingoes and brumbies are actually wild and best not approached. Between August and September some 1500 whales pass through the safe waters protected by Fraser Island.
  • Camel safari, Outback Australia Known as the ships of the desert, these gnarled creatures have found a real home in the Australian bush and provide the perfect means for appreciating the harshness and raw beauty of this land. Safaris start out from almost everywhere. Look at options from Broome in Western Australia, Quorne in South Australia or Noosa in Queensland.
  • Whale safari, Kaikoura Take an eco-marine safari from Kaikoura to see giant sperm whales in their natural habitat with the beautiful backdrop of snow capped mountains behind you. In addition to the whales you can also encounter friendly New Zealand fur seals or dolphins that will come to check out your boat; plus albatross, penguins and other off-shore sea birds.
  • Antarctica This is the ultimate in cruise wildlife safaris. Rug up and take to the polar seas to see populations of whales and penguins, albatross, seals and sea lions.
  • Bird safari, New Zealand Few would know but the islands south of New Zealand are somewhat of a forgotten Galapagos. Revel in the unspoiled environment of Snare, Auckland, Macquaire, Campbell, Antipodes or the Bounty Islands and their seabirds and marine animals. There are albatross, penguins and sea lions. Some are rare or endemic only to this region.
  • Surfing and diving safari, Fiji The southern coast of Viti Levu is considered one of the best left breaks in the South Pacific. You can even dive below the break and watch sharks watching the surfers. The coast is also home to the enormous Beqa Lagoon, a fabulous location for muck diving. Dig around the bottom of the soft-coral reef and search for the harlequin ghost pipefish and juvenile sea horses that feed here.
  • Baiyer River sanctuary, Papua New Guinea If the intoxicating mix of stone age, natural and human history won’t entice you to PNG perhaps the biodiversity will. This wildlife sanctuary in the western highlands, is home to the largest population of birds of paradise in the world. The rich rainforest boats other wildlife and a number of maintained trails, making it a perfect way to explore the highlands and nature together.
  • Canoeing and diving safari, Kosrae, Micronesia Take an outrigger canoe or kayak to explore the canals of the Utwa Walung marine park to see the monitor lizards, crabs, fish and birds who call these mangroves home. Then dive the fabulous reef gardens where shark, tuna, barracuda and eagle rays roam.
  • Scuba safari, Ningaloo reef, Western Australia Dive with the world’s largest fish along the unique coral reefs of Western Australia. The size of these sharks is enough to get your heart pumping but they are actually completely harmless, with more interest in feeding on the rich plankton than curious, goggled humans.

Why YOU Should Book a Kruger National Park Safari

Since the earliest days, when those first tourists excitedly entered the Kruger in 1926, the Park has become a place of immense fascination, so much so that it is featured on countless bucket lists as a must-visit travel destination.

It is one of the oldest and most diverse wildlife parks in the world and the best way to explore it is on safari

Safaris in Africa have taken guests to some of the most beautiful places on the continent, introducing them to a whole new world.

The term safari originated from the Arabic word “safar” which translates to “making a journey”. It then evolved into “safariya” and then later turned into the Swahili word safari, a direct derivative of the Arabic word. But back then, safari was not linked to travelling from the word go. Rather to go on safari would mean to embark on a trading mission.

Initially, the holiday-style safaris became popularised by literature which introduced the concept to overseas tourists who had previously never imagined such a thing existed. And with the creation of cinema, the enigma that was the safari suddenly leapt from the imagination and onto the big screen, bringing the possibility of enjoying such a trip to life.

In the 20th century, the safari quickly became the ultimate holiday although it was not as we experience it today. Back then, safaris were not only sold as a way to see the “Dark Continent” but they doubled as a hunting expedition.

Originally, there was only one African safari, and it was rustic. Luxury did not exist in Africa back then, at least not luxury as we know it today. Guests would sleep where they stopped for the night, in rough tents, and would travel not in the air-conditioned comfort of a safari vehicle, but rather on foot, in a cart and on horseback.

The safaris would often take place in East Africa, with many travelling to Kenya. In what is considered the original safari destination, guests would learn what life was like for those who followed a culturally-rich, traditional way of living.

Guests would experience an eclectic mixture of landscapes, cultures and wildlife, leaving the continent with a greater sense of the world.

As the popularity of such trips soared, the safari underwent many developments. Trips extended right across Africa, covering the north to the south, the east to the west. And the word safari took on a whole new meaning, becoming an umbrella term defined by whatever prefix word it was given.

These uniquely-African tours remain one of the continent’s greatest tourism treasures and millions flock here each year to indulge in that sense of great freedom, and welcoming hospitality that Africa is well-known for.

And they come for the diversity of wildlife.

Africa has remained committed to protecting its priceless animal heritage. And there is no better example of this passionate, unyielding dedication and commitment than the famous Kruger National Park.

The Differences between visiting a National Park and a Private Reserve

The Kruger National Park is a national park, hence its nickname “the People’s Park”. But if you were to select a different park in the area, you might be visiting a private park, and if that is the case, then there are a few things that you need to know:

Self-drives

Often, a private reserve doesn’t allow guests to self-drive and so rented vehicles are on occasion only permitted to be driven to the lodge at which the guest is staying but not around the reserve itself. In public parks, guests have more freedom in this regard and can self-drive using their rental vehicle.

Guided and Private Drives

In the private reserve, a guided game drive is the norm. In the public national park, self-drive is the norm although some camps in the Kruger offer guided tours and guests always have the option of signing up for a guided tour with a reputable tour company operating in the area.

The same goes for the private game drives and night drives, although in the Kruger, the only night drives permitted are those done by official park guides.

Accommodation and Amenities

Private reserves are known for their luxury accommodation, comfortable beds and showers, and private pools. In national parks, most accommodation facilities and amenities such as the swimming pools, are shared by guests. Private nature reserves also don’t allow camping whereas in the national parks, camping is often the norm.

Vehicles at sightings

This has become a bone of contention in many national parks. When a fantastic sighting has occurred, vehicles swamp the area, with everyone vying for a look and perhaps that perfect photo. The issue is that not everyone gives the next person the chance to see what they are seeing and so guests miss out. The other issue is that so many vehicles can end up scaring the animal away.

In private game reserves, the number of vehicles at a sighting is limited. Large tour buses are also prohibited from entering private reserves, for much of the same reason.

Not all guests want or can afford the luxury trips and while both private reserves and national parks have luxury stay options, private reserves do not cater for those who are travelling on a budget. National parks have a wide selection of budget accommodation options, and those who choose to travel with a tour company will find that there are so many tour packages that it is quite easy to select the appropriate one.

Why should you book a tour of the Kruger National Park?

If seeing wildlife roaming the mountains, forests and plains of Africa has always been your dream, you probably don’t need any more reason to book your Kruger safari. The Park is home to some of the biggest and most diverse animal populations on the planet so spotting wildlife is a guarantee.

The landscapes are also an attraction and they vary from wide open plains in the centre and north of the park, where antelope are chased by cheetah through the swirling grass, to the thick forests that run along most of the Park’s rivers. The west of the Park is filled with rocky hills in which leopards and lions raise their cubs while the east of the Park has its legendary acacia trees.

The Kruger National Park is also considered one of the best places in the world to see the well-known Big 5.

There is no right or wrong way to tour the Kruger, and there is also no specific amount of time to spend in travelling the dusty roads. A morning is sometimes more than enough time for some guests to see all they have come to see, although they are the lucky few. Ideally, a week in the Park is perfect for an all-round, memory-filled safari.

So, if you are still deciding on whether or not you should plan a trip to the Kruger, perhaps this will help you make up your mind:

The Park has some of the largest populations of wildlife. For instance, around 2,000 lions live here alongside some 20,000 elephants.

Visitors are more than just tourists - their visit plays a direct role in conservation. Not only do their entrance fees go towards the upkeep of the Park and the protection of wildlife, but their very interest helps keep the Kruger going.

The diversity of the landscapes makes for some incredible photo opportunities.

The Kruger is situated in the third largest biosphere on the planet. The Kruger to Canyon Biosphere is quite famous for its unique vegetation.

The Kruger’s location is easily accessible from most of the country’s biggest cities. As most guests will arrive via O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, they are within 5 - 6 hours driving distance from the Park. The easiest way to get to the Kruger via the city is by using a tour transfer or to drive yourself.

South Africa is one of the most urban countries on the continent. This means that not only is the infrastructure sound, but guests will have access to everything they need, from medical care to their favourite face cream, should they have left it at home.

Some of the best guides in the world can be found in the Kruger. Not only are they perfectly capable of conversing in English but they are also immensely professional and highly knowledgeable.

There are many other places to explore in South Africa. Although the Kruger might be the main attraction for your holiday, the diversity of the country means there is so much more to see! Guests who intend to stay longer can look forward to planning a whole South African experience.

The Kruger is also wonderfully affordable, with the exchange rate benefitting overseas tourists. The Kruger tour operators also offer several safari tours, which means guests can plan accordingly to their budget to enjoy the very best of what the Park has to offer. Or, they can travel on their own.

Every trip is unique. The fantastic thing about the Park is that no two experiences are the same. Sightings change every moment and what you see might be what someone else misses. So every day spent in the Park is a once-in-a-lifetime experience in every sense of the word.

What are the best times of the year to visit the Kruger?

Throughout Africa, every safari is planned according to the rainfall. There are parts of Africa, and indeed parts of the Kruger, where rainfall can completely flood an area, blocking roads and effectively putting a halt to all safaris.

It is immensely important that when a safari trip is being considered, guests should be aware of the time of year they intend to travel and the kind of weather they can expect to encounter.

The Kruger National Park lies in a summer rainfall area. Summer in South Africa runs from around September to the end of February, although it never really cools off completely until around May. Rains fall all throughout the summer months but from January to February, the Kruger is prone to flooding.

Best Times to Travel

The summer months are mostly considered the Park’s low season as the heat keeps a lot of people away. Not only do temperatures heat up to above 40 degrees Celsius in the summer, but the humidity can also be unbearable. And with the humidity and rain, mosquitoes become a bit of a pest.

Late afternoon and evening thundershowers are a norm this time of the year. Summers also make visibility less than ideal as the grass is overgrown in most parts of the Park.

During this time of the year, guests will enjoy the best safari prices though, as it is low season, so this is one perk for travelling in the summer months.

Low chance of rainfall and a high chance of tourists - travelling in winter has both its pros and its cons. Winter is considered the Park's peak season as it is the most comfortable time of year to travel but the downside is that the Park is filled with guests and so, the prices are also higher than usual.

If you intend on travelling to the Kruger between the months of May to September/October, you should consider booking your trip around 3 to 6 months in advance. The upside of travelling through the Park in winter is that not only is the malaria risk lower than usual, but visibility is superb and the risk of flooding is virtually non-existent.

Outback Tours

Outback tours australia.

Nothing quite captures the essence of Australia like the Outback.  For most travellers from across the globe, an Australian Outback tour is an absolute must to capture seemingly endless stretches of open space, observe the amazingly well-adapted wildlife, share the intriguing stories and traditions of the Aboriginal culture, gaze in wonder at starlit skies and photograph iconic landmarks and converse with the unique characters that call the outback home.

The Red Centre is considered the spiritual heart of Australia and most popular region for outback tours in Australia , with incredible desert landscapes characterised by rich red soils and the iconic landmarks such as Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon and Mt Conner. The Anangu people of Uluru have been the traditional custodians of this region for at least 30,000 years, balancing the intricate relationship between people, plants, animals and the majestic landscapes, with several outback tours providing the opportunity to share the story of this ancient land through indigenous eyes.

For visitors wanting an extended Australian outback adventure , a multi-day tour from Alice Springs through to Uluru will provide opportunities to spot the amazing flora and fauna that have evolved to thrive in this arid environment including numerous skinks, the iconic Thorny Devil, bushbirds, goannas, raptor birds, Kangaroos, Common Wallaroos and fascinating insects. The impressive Kings Canyon also provides the opportunity to take a Rim Walk and marvel at the sandstone rock walls, towering more than 300 metres above the valley floor, with lush gardens and contrasting green cycads below. For visitors wanting to experience a 4WD outback tour across a sprawling outback station, Mt Conner located within Curtin Springs Station, is perfect to wander off the beaten track and learn more about the pioneering history of this majestic region.

Further south, Arkaba is nestled amongst the ancient landscapes of the Flinders Ranges, famed for beautiful sculpted ranges, spectacular deep gorges, striking river red gum creek lines, abundant wildlife and beautifully restored homestead accommodation. The geological history of the area is world-renowned and combined with the Aboriginal rock art, impressive fossil remains and European settlement history, is one of the most fascinating regions to visit for an Australian outback adventure . Arkaba is one of the best locations in Australia to see Macropods due to the year round pockets of water along with many bushbirds and parrots.

Below is a selection of the best Australian Outback Tours offering unforgettable day or extended touring experiences in small groups or on a private basis.

safari na australia

I have arrived back from my Southern African holiday……a customised trip organised by The Africa Safari Co., a trip through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and into Namibia.

Everything worked like clockwork, a true testament to The Africa Safari Co. and their contacts, and their knowledge of Africa. Every guide was there on time, and highly visible, to greet me at the many meeting points throughout the journey. Every booking accurately made, and a well documented itinerary. The itinerary selected by them was varied, engaging, and full of the excitement and mystery promised in all the stories, movies, books and fantasies we all have as children, while growing up, and as adults.

Thank you The Africa Safari Co. …… a truly memorable time.

Terre Wohling

My first time to Africa and The Africa Safari Co did not disappoint! I explored Namibia and the staff on the ground there, the transport, accommodation & activities were all exceptional! If you are considering an African adventure most definitely use The Africa Safari Co!

safari na australia

We spent 3 weeks in Africa, and 2 of those were travelling with The Africxa Safari Co. We started with 3 days in South Africa. Picked up at the airport on time, taken to our accommodation. Spent the next two days being shown around with a wonderful guide. Off we went then to Botswana, for another 3 days. We stayed at Kasane at the Bakwena Lodge. OMG this place is AMAZING! We saw all of the big 5 other than rhinos, within the first two days! We then went to Victoria Falls and yet again we were blessed with great accommodation and I’ll definitely be back and highly recommend this company!

We have just returned from a wonderful safari in Kenya. The organisation of the tour by The Africa Safari Co. meant that nothing was left to chance and all we had to do was enjoy our holiday. Thankyou The Africa Safari Co.

safari na australia

I have travelled twice with The Africa Safari Co. The first in 2015 when we went to Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Trekking and again in 2017 to Tanzania & Kenya. With 25 years experience in Africa their product knowledge is amazing and the staff really know their stuff. When putting itineraries together they offer great suggestions to work within time and budget restrictions. The local ground operators have been fantastic, very friendly with a great knowledge of the game and areas we travelled. If you are looking for an amazing Africa experience don’t look any further than The Africa Safari Co.

I just wanted to let you know, George and Ana have returned from their honeymoon, and they said it was everything they hoped for and more!

They were so happy with everything, and I’d like to thank you and Susie for all your recommendations and expertise in putting this together.

Your documentation was also the best of any I’ve ever received.

So a big thank you and I look forward to putting my next Africa booking with you!

Australia is still finding out what it doesn't know about its secretive AUKUS deal

Analysis Australia is still finding out what it doesn't know about its secretive AUKUS deal

Anthony Albanese (left) stands and shakes hands with Joe Biden in front of US and Australian flags.

When US President Joe Biden announced he would not be standing for another term, Australia's political leaders expressed their gratitude for his contribution to public life. But this week, Australian voters had something else for which to be grateful to Biden.

For it was only as a result of a letter the US president wrote to the US Congress , that we found that there had been an update to the AUKUS agreement which will allow naval nuclear propulsion plants, rather than just nuclear propulsion "information", to be transferred to Australia.

But it is not this part of the letter that has raised eyebrows and hackles even if, as usual, we find out about such deals from the Americans before we find out about them from our own government. The formal part of the deal will be exposed when it is submitted to the Treaties committee of our own parliament.

It is a side agreement, between the US, the UK and Australia that is of considerable concern: a non-legally binding "understanding" that includes "additional related political commitments".

What are these? Well, they are secret.

The AUKUS saga moves on without much scrutiny

Critics argue that the "understanding" and "additional related political commitments" could include how and where these vessels are used. That is, what conflicts Australia would be expected to show up for, and how.

Some speculate on the possibility that it involves Australia agreeing to accept nuclear waste from the US and the UK, something the government has denied .

The idea that any of these such undertakings may have been made, but we aren't allowed to know, is simply outrageous.

A quick recap of the AUKUS deal reveals that we are still expecting to receive two second-hand US Virginia class submarines, before embarking on building an entirely new, and so far unseen, British submarine in Adelaide.

Of course, we get a bit of a say in the design and plans for that new sub, don't we?

Well the UK announced in October 2023 that it had selected BAE Systems for the SSN-AUKUS submarine . That month, Greens senator David Shoebridge asked officials about what involvement Australia had in the selection of the company that would build both the UK and Australian submarines.

The Australian Submarine Agency's Alexandra Kelton told the Senate that "we had, through our high commission, some notification that an announcement would be made and some context around that but not of the content in great detail".

The AUKUS submarine saga moves on with not much scrutiny in Australia, let alone apparently much input from Australia, given its cost and its huge strategic investment in one particular idea.

The second-hand Virginia class subs and later the AUKUS-class subs to be built in Adelaide are supposedly "sovereign Australian assets operating under the complete control of the Australian government".

The Greens' Shoebridge is one critic who warns the secret undertakings could include commitments on how the subs are used.

And this is a position which seems to be backed in by the authoritative papers written for the US Congressional Research Service.

Voters likely to be the last to know

In its latest update on the Virginia-class submarines, dated August 5, the Service's analysts once again outline the relative benefits costs and risks of an "alternative division-of-labor approach".

That's technical talk for an alternative plan in which "up to eight additional Virginia-class SSNs would be procured and retained in US Navy service and operated out of Australia along with the US and UK SSNs that are already planned to be operated out of Australia … while Australia invested in military capabilities (such as, for example, long-range anti-ship missiles, drones, loitering munitions, B-21 long-range bombers, or other long-range strike aircraft)".

That is, we don't get any submarines, the Americans (and Brits) just run theirs out of here. Along with an expansion of bomber visits, personnel and troop rotations.

The "deterrence and warfighting cost-effectiveness" arguments for doing this "include [the fact that] Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles in March 2023 reportedly confirmed that in exchange for the Virginia-class boats, Australia's government made no promises to the United States that Australia would support the United States in a future conflict over Taiwan."

"Selling three to five Virginia-class SSNs to Australia would thus convert those SSNs from boats that would be available for use in a US-China crisis or conflict into boats that might not be available for use in a US-China crisis or conflict. This could weaken rather than strengthen deterrence and warfighting capability in connection with a US-China crisis or conflict."

There's a lot more like that.

Riled on Friday by the prime minister's dismissal of his observations on AUKUS , Albanese's predecessor Paul Keating warned that "the strength and scale of the United States's basing in Australia will eclipse Australia's own military capability such that Australia will be viewed in the United States as a continental extension of American power akin to that which it enjoys in Hawaii, Alaska and more limitedly in places like Guam".

"Such an outcome is likely to turn the Australian government, in defence and security terms, into simply the national administrator of what would be broadly viewed in Asia as a US protectorate," he said.

If that happens, voters are likely to be the last to know about it.

Laura Tingle is 7.30's chief political correspondent.

Imec patterns first logic and DRAM transistors using High-NA litho tools

A major breakthrough for semiconductor industry.

Imec

Imec and ASML announced on Wednesday that they had made the industry’s logic and DRAM structures using ASML'sASML’sroduction Twinscan EXE:5000 EUV lithography tool with a 0.55 numerical aperture, also known as a high-NA litho system . The successful demonstration of high-resolution patterning with the 0.55NA EUV scanner marks an essential milestone in microelectronics production.

Imec achieved the patterning of random logic structures with 9.5nm dense metal lines (compared to a 13nm resolution in the case of currently used Low-NA tools), which corresponds to a 19nm pitch and a sub 20nm tip-to-tip dimensions, which is good enough to build logic on a 1.4nm-class process technology using a single High-NA exposure. Additionally, Imec successfully created random vias with a 30nm center-to-center distance, showcasing good pattern fidelity and critical dimension uniformity. Furthermore, 2D features were patterned at a 22nm pitch, which is good enough for a 3nm-class fabrication process.

Considering that the pre-production Twinscan EXE High-NA EUV litho system was assembled less than a year ago, the achievements of ASML and Imec at the joint High NA EUV Lithography Lab in Veldhoven, Netherlands, are impressive, to say the least. This follows printing 10nm dense lines using high-NA EUV in April.

“The results confirm the long-predicted resolution capability of High NA EUV lithography, targeting sub 20nm pitch metal layers in one single exposure,” said Luc Van den Hove, president and CEO of imec. “High NA EUV will therefore be highly instrumental to continue the dimensional scaling of logic and memory technologies, one of the key pillars to push the roadmaps deep into the ‘angstrom era’. These early demonstrations were only possible thanks to the setup of the joint ASML-imec lab, which allowed our partners to accelerate the introduction of High NA lithography into manufacturing.”

Imec developed pattern designs for DRAM layouts that integrate the storage node landing pad with the bit line periphery at a 32nm pitch in a single exposure. This significant accomplishment underscores High NA technology’s ability to replace several mask layers with a single exposure, simplifying manufacturing processes, shrinking cycle times, and reducing costs.

The success of high-NA EUV patterning is attributed to the optimization of materials and baseline processes by ASML, Imec, and their partners. Preparations involved developing advanced resists, underlayers, and photomasks and transferring High NA EUV baseline processes like optical proximity correction (OPC) and integrated patterning and etch techniques to the 0.55NA EUV scanner.

These results show High NA EUV lithography ecosystem readiness and give ASML customers an idea of how to develop private use cases using the Twinscan EXE:5000 lithography system. Imec plans to provide further insights to support the maturation of High NA EUV-specific materials and equipment, ensuring technology integration into manufacturing processes.

"We are thrilled to demonstrate the world's first High NA-enabled logic and memory patterning in the joint ASML-imec lab as an initial validation of industry applications," said Steven Scheer, senior vice president of compute technologies & systems/compute system scaling at imec.

"The results showcase the unique potential for High NA EUV to enable single-print imaging of aggressively-scaled 2D features, improving design flexibility as well as reducing patterning cost and complexity. Looking ahead, we expect to provide valuable insights to our patterning ecosystem partners, supporting them in further maturing High NA EUV specific materials and equipment."

  • Beyond Chrome and Safari: The Best Alternative Web Browsers for 2024

If you stick to Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari, you're missing out on the intriguing extras in the best alternative web browsers.

Michael Muchmore

Colibri Browser

Opera

Tor Browser

Vivaldi

Large tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft promote their  web browsers  on their devices and operating systems, but you don't have to use them. Alternative web browsers—many you may not have heard of before—give you unique and interesting capabilities, such as greater customization, added privacy, and different browsing tools. For example, some have a reading mode that shows you a cleaned-up view of an article so you can focus on the words without distracting ads and videos. That's just one of many examples of how you can benefit from using an alternative browser. Here, you'll find some alternative browsers that are well worth your consideration. If you have a favorite lesser-known browser that’s not listed here, please let us know in the comments section.

You Can Trust Our Reviews

Deeper dive: our top tested picks.

Unlike other web browsers, Arc requires you to sign up with an email account before using it. But that's a small price to pay for its minimalist interface, split window option, and AI assistance. The browser runs on Windows, iOS, and macOS, with a waitlist for the Android version.

It's true that most of what you find in Arc you also find in Edge or other alternative browsers like Vivaldi, but it's a different take on the web browser that appeals to some users. The interface has a collapsible side panel for tabs rather than tabs across the top, like most desktop browsers. Buttons for your favorites rest on the top of the sidebar, and you can group tabs into custom folders. You also get a Spaces feature that resembles Edge's Workspaces. You can send Arc Spaces to a contact, but they're not collaborative like Edge's.

The browser's AI Arc Max feature sends certain browsing activity to OpenAI and Anthropic for features like summarizing webpages, answering general knowledge questions, or suggesting activities. Arc ships with uBlock, one of the best ad blockers you can get, though The Browser Company, which makes Arc, doesn't highlight special privacy features like Brave and some other alternative browsers do. The browser is free, and the company says it doesn't sell any of your data.

Bottom Line:

Colibri has a truly different take on the web browser: It has no tabs! You need to sign up for a free account with an email to use it, however. Minimalists will love Colibri's pared-down interface, which dispenses with all the doodads and whirligigs found in today's leading browsers. It shows just six buttons at the top: Back, Forward, Reload, Add to Links, Web Search, and Toggle View.

When you log in, your saved links, lists, and feeds appear. Instead of opening sites in new tabs, you get a choice of a new window or replacing the current window's contents. The Toggle view shows your pinned site links in tiles for easy access. Colibri blocks third-party trackers, ads, and malicious hosts, but don't expect extensions or other extras. If less is more for you, then Colibri is your browser. The HTML5Test website reports that Colibri has a high level of website compatibility, but the EFF's Cover Your Tracks tool reports that it doesn't protect you from tracking, so caveat emptor.

One of my favorite features in Maxthon is its Resource Sniffer. It lets you find and download pictures, videos, music, and other files that are part of the webpage you're visiting. Another standout option, Split Screen, has been slow to appear in standard browsers like Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. It also has synchronizable notes, a password saver, and built-in screenshot capabilities. Like Opera, Maxthon has a customizable left button rail for notes, favorites, RSS feeds, and so forth. I also like the built-in screenshot tool and a Night Mode that turns web pages black with white text to save your eyes during late-night web reading.

Maxthon's documentation claims it doesn't do any tracking of your browsing. You have the option to install a free VPN called BrightVPN at installation. Unlike the proxy built into Opera, this one is a full VPN, cloaking all internet traffic to your device. Finally, Maxthon boasts a built-in blockchain wallet option for Web3 compatibility, but you can find those in Brave and Opera, or add one as an extension in just about any other browser.

Opera  has been an alternative browser since before several of the current leaders in the category existed. Its developers are responsible for introducing many standard features we now take for granted, including tabs, built-in search, a pop-up blocker, and page zooming. Not all of Opera’s novel developments have lasted the test of time, which says something about its willingness to try something unconventional. For example, Opera formerly let you use it as a server so that you could host your own photo galleries or chat rooms and access them from anywhere.

Opera is the first browser with a built-in (and very good) VPN, a cryptocurrency wallet, and built-in ad blocking. The Opera Flow feature takes syncing between mobile a desktop to a new level. The latest? Opera has announced integration with ChatGPT , starting with a Shorten summarization feature.

Though ad blocking isn’t turned on by default in Opera you can get it by checking the option called “Block ads and surf the web up to three times faster.” Like many browser alternatives, Opera runs on top of the Chromium code base, which powers Chrome, so you’re unlikely to run into site incompatibilities.

  • Built-in ad blocker, VPN, and battery saver.
  • Fast performance.
  • Helpful Speed Dial start page.
  • Turbo mode speeds up slow connections, reduces data usage.
  • Gestures for easy navigation.
  • Some sites balk at an unrecognized browser.
  • No reading mode or reading list.
  • Lacks social sharing tool.

Tor is more than a browser; it’s a complete privacy software stack. Tor traffic is not only encrypted, but also forwarded to multiple nodes, with each successively encrypting it again. At the end your traffic is inside multiple layers, like those of an onion. Hence the name Tor, which stands for  the onion router.  Private Tor sites even use the .onion extension. Those sites make up what's known colloquially as the dark web .

The browser itself is based on Firefox, with some privacy extensions and settings locked, so standard websites display just fine inside this private browsing space. The big downside is all that routing and encryption slow down your browsing considerably. Despite that, it's the ultimate tool for people in repressive countries who need to circumvent internet filtering or those who simply demand privacy and anonymity. For even more of that, you can set it up so that the ISP doesn't know you're using it by using a bridge relay or by running it in Tails , a portable OS you run from a USB key. If you don't want to install extra software, Brave (see entry above) offers a built-in Tor private browsing option.

  • Easily connects to the Tor anonymizing network
  • Simple interface for complex security tools
  • Feature-rich browser
  • Integrated privacy tools
  • Slows down browsing
  • Finding localized websites can be difficult
  • Some privacy features may be confusing to novice users

Coming from one of the creators of the Opera browser, Vivaldi has customization galore and has garnered passionate fans among the technorati. It’s based on the Chromium open source browser code that’s managed by Google and used in its Chrome browser. You can enable, disable, and tweak every minute aspect of the browser. Vivaldi resembles Opera in using a tile-based start page, tab previews, mouse gestures, and a side rail of buttons for frequent actions like note-taking, downloads, history, and favorites.

Standout features include a split screen, clutter-free printing, and an Image Properties view complete with a histogram. A favorite trick of mine is that the browser window changes color to match the site you’re on. Vivaldi now includes an email client as well as Mastodon integration. In another great example of stretching our concept of what a browser is, Vivaldi lets you control Philips Hue smart bulbs based on the browser's color pattern!

  • Precisely customizable.
  • Compliant with Web standards.
  • Excellent tab implementation.
  • Can get cluttered if you enable all of its tools.
  • No Reading mode or Share button.
  • Lacks syncing and mobile versions.

NANTERRE, France (AP) — The final night of swimming at the Paris Olympics stirred a wide range of emotions for an American team that no longer rules the world.

A world record from Bobby Finke.

A historic loss that reignited gripes about Chinese doping.

Finally, another world record for the women’s 4x100-meter medley relay team to edge out rival Australia for the top spot in the gold-medal table.

“Just an awesome way to cap off the meet,” said Lilly King of the winning relay team, who joined her teammates in strolling around the deck holding up the stars and stripes as the crowd filed out La Defense Arena.

Finke set his new standard in the 1,500 freestyle before the American women closed a thrilling nine days of swimming in style.

The U.S. finished with eight gold medals to top Australia, which won seven events. Still, it was the lowest victory total for the Americans since the 1988 Seoul Games, when they were beaten by a doping-tainted East German program.

They finished with 28 medals overall, two shy of their total three years ago in Tokyo. In all, 13 countries won at least one gold — French star Léon Marchand was essentially a country unto himself — and 19 teams made the medal podium.

After a bevy of disappointing performances by some of its biggest names, the U.S. team was very much aware of its gold-medal battle with the Aussies.

“I knew Bobby had tied it up,” King said. “Bobby’s swim was electric. That was amazing. He definitely got my energy going for the relay. I was pumped to hopefully assert that lead and get the gold.”

That’s just what she did.

King, whose third Olympics will be her last, made up for a disappointing showing in her individual events by powering to the lead on the breaststroke segment.

Then it was Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske, two of the biggest U.S. stars at these games, bringing it home in 3 minutes, 49.63 seconds to break the record of 3:50.40 set by the U.S. at the 2019 world championships.

Catch up on the latest from Day 14 of the 2024 Paris Olympics:

  • Boxing: Algerian boxer Imane Khelif will win either a gold or a silver medal when she fights Yang Liu of China in the final of the women’s welterweight division.
  • Relay: 100-meter silver medalist Sha’Carri Richardson will lead the U.S. women’s relay team in 4x100-meter final.
  • Soccer: France will face Spain in the final of the men’s soccer tournament, meaning there’ll be a European gold medalist at the Olympics for the first time in 32 years.

Regan Smith led off in the backstroke leg, earning a relay gold for the second night in a row after starting her Olympic career with five silvers and a bronze.

Australia, the defending Olympic champion, took the silver this time in 3:53.11. The bronze went to China in 3:53.23.

Four world records were set during the meet, three of them by the U.S.

Historic loss for the Americans

China stunningly won the gold in the men’s 4x100 medley relay, ending the American run of dominance that stretched back to the introduction of the event at the 1960 Rome Games.

The only time the U.S. didn’t win gold was in 1980, when it boycotted the Moscow Games.

The winning team included Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun, who were both among the nearly two dozen swimmers who tested positive for a banned substance before the Tokyo Games but were allowed to compete . The result stirred more hard feelings from other nations that feel the Chinese might have gotten away with cheating.

The real star of the Chinese team was Pan Zhanle , who had previously set a world record while winning the 100 free and powered away from American Hunter Armstrong on the anchor leg to touch in 3:27.46.

The Americans were left with the silver in 3:28.01, with France taking bronze in 3:28.38 to give Marchand his fifth medal of the games — four of them individual golds.

British star Adam Peaty, whose team barely missed out on a medal by finishing fourth, blasted a system that allowed the Chinese swimmers to compete at the Olympics.

“If you touch and you know you’re cheating, you’re not winning, right?” Peaty said. “As an honorable person, I mean, you should be out of the sport, but we know sport isn’t that simple.”

Peaty noted that after the initial revelations, additional reports surfaced of more positive tests in the Chinese program that went unpunished.

“I think we’ve got our faith in the system, but we also don’t,” he said. “Whoever’s in the race, I expect in my head that it has to be fair for them to be there. We did our best job as a team to do that, and it may have been (worthy of) a bronze. Who knows?”

Caeleb Dressel, who swam the butterfly leg for the Americans, said prior to the Olympics that he didn’t have faith in the World Anti-Doping Agency or his sport’s governing body, World Aquatics.

With a silver around his neck, he seemed resigned to the belief that nothing will change.

“I don’t work for WADA,” Dressel said. “There’s nothing I can do.”

Finke’s world record

Finke was under record pace the entire race and really turned it on coming to the finish. He touched in 14:30.67 to break the record of 14.31.02 set by China’s Sun Yang at the 2012 London Games.

The silver went to Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri in 14.34.55, while race favorite Daniel Wiffen of Ireland couldn’t follow up his triumph in the 800 freestyle. He was never a factor and settled for the bronze in 14:39.63, barely holding off Hungary’s David Betlehem for the final spot on the podium.

Finke became only the fourth swimmer to defend the men’s title in the longest event at the pool, and the first since Australia’s Grant Hackett in 2004.

“I really wanted to get on top of the podium again and I hear the anthem all over again like I did for the first time in Tokyo,” said Finke, who swept the 800 and 1,500 three years ago.

This time, a gold in the 1,500 to go with a silver in the 800 felt pretty good, too.

“It was a dream,” he said.

Swedish gold in the women’s 50 free

Sarah Sjöström of Sweden claimed her second gold medal of the Paris Olympics, furiously dashing from one end of the pool to the other to easily claim the 50 freestyle title.

The 30-year-old Sjöström, competing in her fifth Summer Games, had already won the 100 free — an event in which she holds the world record but only decided to swim at the urging of her coach.

She was more surprised than anyone with that victory, which had her overflowing with confidence heading into the 50 free.

Sjöström touched in 23.71, just shy of the world record of 23.61 she set at the 2023 world championships in Fukuoka, Japan. In a race that’s usually decided by mere hundredths of a second, the Swedish star turned this into a relative blowout. She was fastest off the block and clearly in control by the midway point of the single lap, where the swimmers don’t even bother coming up for air.

Meg Harris of Australia took the silver in 23.97, while the bronze went to China’s Zhang Yufei in 24.20. For Zhang, another of the swimmers implicated in the Chinese doping scandal, it was her fourth bronze of the games to go with a silver.

Walsh, in her first swim of a busy night, just missed out on a medal in 24.21.
