belmond luxury safari lodges

Belmond safari lodge

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge is located in the Central Okavango Delta region of Botswana , one of the most impressive natural wonders of Africa – if not in the world.

The Okavango River flows into the desert, evaporating and transpiring before reaching the ocean, forming a delta of water and sand with incredible biodiversity.

Among the luxury lodges in the Delta , Belmond Eagle Island Lodge – along with Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge and Belmond Khwai River Lodge – represents the ultimate luxury experience in this wild, wonderful area of the world.

The lodge – built on a private island in the Delta – was completely renewed in 2016. Its architecture blends perfectly with the surrounding landscape, with smooth lines, natural colors, and local crafts and materials.

Each of the 12 spacious accommodations has a private terrace with infinity plunge pool and a dreamy outdoor shower.

A truly unique feature of Belmond Eagle Island Lodge is the attention to the environment: electricity is supplied by solar power, toiletries and cleaning products are environmentally friendly.

The activities provided by Belmond Eagle Island Lodge include classic game drives on private vehicles, walking safaris , mokoro excursions and helicopter rides on the Okavango Delta, and water safaris by boat.

In this area the African wildlife is abundant and surprisingly easy to spot: elephants , big cats , buffalos , hippos and even rhinos call the Okavango Delta home, making this one of the very few places where all the Big Five can be seen in Botswana.

Chamilandu bush camp

If you’re looking for an intimate, luxury safari experience, you can’t go wrong with a stay at Chamilandu camp in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. Chamilandu, or ‘Chami’ as it is affectionately known, is part of the Bush Camp Company, a company operating seven exclusive Bushcamps throughout the park.

Chamilandu is perfect for a luxurious stay, especially for couples; it’s secluded, intimate, and romantic, with only three stilted tree houses meaning you’re guaranteed plenty of privacy during your stay. Each treehouse is furnished with a mixture of contemporary and traditional African decorations and has a raised veranda and open-fronted en-suite bathroom, both with sweeping views over the Luangwa River (one of Africa’s finest rivers for wildlife spotting ).

At the center of Chamilandu is the enclosed main area, which includes a variety of seating, the communal dining table, a well-stocked bar, and small library. There’s a campfire lit in the mornings to cook porridge and toast, also serving as a gathering spot for pre-dinner drinks. Don’t miss the ‘hide’ along the river, a thatched building on stilts with a vantage point over a small lagoon where animals will often come to drink during the heat of the day.

The food and drink options offered at Chamilandu are of high quality, including interactive brunches such as pizza making and Mongolian BBQ. The staff is incredibly friendly and professional, allowing you to truly relax and appreciate the natural beauty of this remote Zambian safari location.

Jackalberry Treehouse at Flat Dogs Camp

Zambia is a beautiful and welcoming country. It boasts an incredible diversity of natural treasures and wildlife, with fewer tourists to share it all with than in some of the surrounding African countries.

The best place in the country to see this wildlife on a safari holiday is in South Luangwa National Park. The park is home to over 60 species of safari animals  including lions , leopards , giraffes , zebras , elephants, hippos, and hyenas , and a whopping 400 species of birds. The park is also unusual in that it allows evening/night drives, giving the chance to see some of the nocturnal creatures (like the big cats ) when they are at their most active.

There is nowhere better to stay than at the luxury Jackalberry Treehouse at Flat Dogs Camp . Separated from the rest of the camp, this expansive and private luxury treehouse has a beautiful outdoor terrace that serves as a private viewing gallery on which to watch the procession of wild animals that casually wander close by, as well as boasting a telescope for star-gazing.

The two en-suite bedrooms are covered, yet remain open-sided, so you can expect to see elephants and giraffes right from your bed. There is space for four people, but you retain exclusive use if only booking one of the rooms as a two (with the other left vacant).

A stay in the treehouse comes as a package that includes all of your food on demand (with the option to dine in private at the treehouse), as well as two safari drives a day and airport transfers. You even get your very own treehouse ‘keeper’ who cleans, does turn-downs and most importantly, keeps the cheeky monkeys away while you’re not there! It all contributes to a perfect stay. Why not combine a safari with a visit to the world-famous Victoria Falls, to create a truly unforgettable trip of a lifetime to Zambia ?

Lemala Nanyukie Lodge

  • Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Contributed by Rebecca at Rebecca and the World

lemala nanyukie lodge

No  Tanzania itinerary is complete without a visit to the world-famous Serengeti . Meaning ‘endless plains’ in Maasai, hundreds of thousands of animals call these remote grasslands and savanna home – and many more make their way through during the great migrations.

While the Serengeti may be far from a major city, it doesn’t mean that you can’t find luxury here. And it doesn’t come more luxurious than Lemala Nanyukie.

One of Lemala’s newest properties, Nanyukie opened in 2018. The property is designed to blend into its natural surroundings – and nature is never far away. It’s common to see elephants and antelope from the restaurant, or even wake up to fresh lion pawprints on the footpath.

Because of this thrilling closeness to nature, a Maasai guard escorts guests to and from their rooms, no matter the time of day.

Each tented room is set away from the others, creating a sense of privacy. The standard rooms have a separate living room, bedroom and closet, and bathroom. There are no fewer than three ways to wash the Serengeti dust off at the end of the day: an indoor shower, an outdoor shower, and a standalone bathtub.

Each of these spaces has glass doors that lead out to the enormous balcony. A sunken lounge suite provides the perfect place to view the sunset, while a private plunge pool invites guests to take a dip.

A three-course dinner is served each night, accompanied by a superb collection of wines and liquor. Breakfast is an enormous buffet of fresh fruits, cereals, and an egg station.

Despite the glamorous surroundings, the staff is friendly and down-to-earth, and from your first step on to the property, you’ll experience the warmth of Tanzanian hospitality.

Loisaba Lodo Springs

Loisaba Conservancy, Kenya

loisaba lodo springs luxury safari lodge

Loisaba Lodo Springs, the latest in Elewana Collection’s portfolio of luxury safari camps situated around East Africa, sits in the heart of Loisaba Conservancy. Offering an ultra-private and luxurious safari experience, the boutique lodge offers unparalleled views over the Laikipia plains, stretching to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya from its 12-room tented camp.

The absolute epitome of luxury,  Loisaba Lodo Springs is one of only three safari camps located inside Loisaba Conservancy. Not only are guests treated to top-notch service and all the comforts one could wish for at camp, but guests can also expect exclusivity with no more than around 20 safari vehicles out and about at one time in the 57,000 acre private Loisaba Conservancy.

Quickly becoming one of East Africa’s top safari destinations, Loisaba Conservancy is teeming with all the classic safari wildlife you could hope to spot (with the exception of the rhino), as well as Kenya’s Northern Five. Even the rare black panther has been spotted by conservationists inside the private game reserve. After days out surrounded by the endangered reticulated giraffe, herds of elephant, lions on the hunt, cheetahs chasing down prey on the plains and much more that can only be seen in Northern Kenya, guests can relax with sundowners at picturesque spots your dedicated guides find around the park.

With a focus on conservation and community education to help residents live in harmony with the big game wildlife, they share the Laikipia plains with, some of the activities guests won’t want to miss are the opportunity to meet the anti-poaching unit and their dogs. It’s a unique opportunity to witness how these hounds help dwindling animal populations rebound with their anti-poaching efforts. And certainly, a highlight will be the bush breakfast, an exclusive experience no guest will soon forget.

Luangwa Safari House

Luangwa Valley, Zambia

Luangwa Safari House, one of the most luxurious in Africa

The South Luangwa Safari House undoubtedly has the most genuine design cred of any of this pick of luxury lodges. The interiors were put together by darling of the glossies, Neil Rocher, and combine plenty of stylish touches with an environmentally sound approach to the use of natural materials.

Safari-wise, it’s got impeccable credentials, too – set at the foot of the Chindeni Hills, it looks out over a seasonal lagoon. After a hot day out in the bush, you can slip into the infinity pool with a cocktail as the sun sets and watch the animals come down for their evening drink. A special moment.

Nottens Bush Camp

Sabi Sands, South Africa

Nottens Bush Camp exterior shot

If you are looking for a really special stay during your safari in South Africa, you should consider Nottens Bush Camp in Sabi Sand Reserve.

The lodge has, unlike many others, no fence and no electricity so you are really staying in the bush (in one of the nine exclusive, private suites). A guard brings you to your room after dark and we experienced why they do so. One night we almost stumbled over a hyena on our way to our room. We were so shocked and happy that we had a guard with us. Another night my parents woke up and heard a strange noise in front of their room. They got out of bed to take a look and there was an elephant eating the plants that stood on their porch.

From your room in African style, you are overlooking an open area with a waterhole, so sit on your porch and enjoy the panoramic views and the wildlife passing by. You will see zebra, elephants, antelopes, and many other animals pass by.

Nottens Bush Camp is one of the original game lodges in South Africa and is known for its highly experienced rangers. and the area is great for spotting leopards.

This family-owned lodge goes the extra mile. After our first safari, we entered our room. All the candles and lanterns were burning, the bathtub was filled, rose leaves everywhere and a bottle of South African Vonkelwijn (champagne) was waiting for us.

In the evening all the guests are sitting at a big table to share the most thrilling stories about their safari.

They organize two game drives a day. One at 05.30 in the morning and one at 15.30 in the afternoon. In between those safaris you can relax beside the pool or enjoy a massage at the Nature Spa.

Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp

Each large tent features a luxurious bed, indoor and outdoor bathroom, and a private veranda with unbeatable Delta views. As one of the many luxury touches, there’s also a choice of two sherry decanters for a pre-dawn game drive pick me up!

The common areas include the main lodge with an interactive food and coffee bar, an extensive pool area (which doubles as a game viewing area for the lazy!), a dedicated massage sala, and a spectacular open-air fire pit to while away the evenings under the stars.

Okonjima Plains camp

Okonjima Plains Camp is located between Windhoek and Etosha National Park in Namibia. The camp was once a private farm that was converted into a conservation area, committed to the long-term survival of Namibia’s largest carnivores. As a 200 square kilometer private nature reserve, the camp is home to abundant wildlife.

With a unique location inside an extremely diverse conservation area, Okonjima Plains Camp is a special destination in Namibia . But, the luxurious accommodation, top quality service, and native surroundings make it a thoroughly rewarding experience. Beautiful safari-chic chalets indulge guests with unparalleled luxury. Large glass windows and canvas panels can be opened for unlimited views of the lush African savanna.

The Private Bush Suite includes a private chef, personal guide, and swimming pool in a stunning location on the edge of a water hole. Onguma Fort is a unique safari lodge, built in the style of a Moroccan adobe fort and standing right on the edge of Etosha National Park . The lodge has the self-styled ‘best sunset views in the whole of Namibia’, overlooking a waterhole in the beautiful semi-desert of the Etosha Pans

Phinda Mountain Lodge

Phinda Game Reserve, South Africa

Submitted by Claudia Tavani at My Adventures Across The World

luxurious private pool at phinda mountain lodge

Phinda Game Reserve , in KwaZulu Natal, is home to some of the most beautiful, luxurious lodges in Africa. The best by far is Mountain Lodge. As the name says, this is located in such a way to afford beautiful views across the bushveld to panoramic mountains.

The lodge is blissfully isolated on top of a hill. Once there, you will walk to the common areas where you will find the dining area, where a decadent breakfast and lunch, as well as afternoon tea are offered every day. So much care is taken in the selection of the ingredients that you even have a choice of several types of coffee and roasts. The common area is also where the bar is located, with a seating area directly facing the mountains, for incredible views.

On the way to your room you will find the beautiful pool and the spa, perfect for a relaxing afternoon – before you drive away on one of the game drives.

Rooms are incredibly comfortable, with large beds with a pillow menu; a sitting area with a fridge and all sorts of drinks and snacks; a deck with a plunge pool – a favorite of local wildlife which is free to roam the grounds (it is not uncommon to spot nyalas and at times even elephants drinking from the pool!), and a very spacious bathroom with a large shower and a Victorian-style bathtub.

At Phinda Mountain Lodge you will feel welcome, pampered and you will be able to fully relax while enjoying nature and the unique wildlife of this part of the country.

Rekero Camp

Submitted by Jolene at Go Wander The World

alfresco dining at luxurious rekero camp

In the heart of the famous Greater Masai Mara you’ll find Asilia Africa’s Rekero Camp. This camp has basically got it all: wonderful staff, great rangers, amazing tents and a view that’s one of a kind.

Upon arrival you’re welcomed with some cool drinks after which they’ll show you your luxurious tent. All tents overlook the Talek river so you can check out the wildlife right from your terrace.

Speaking about views, one of the prime features of this camp is the large deck in front of the main tent. This is where you’ll have a drink in the afternoon and where you’re meals are served. The main deck overlooks an important crossing point of the Talek river when the Great Migration of wildebeests is at its best. This means theoretically you don’t even have to go on a game drive to see the spectacle that the migration is.

When you do go on a game drive you’ll have one of the expert rangers accompanying you. Since the camp is situated quite remotely you’ve got the feeling you’ve got the park to yourself. The famous vast plains of the Mara are just outside the camp and attract grazers and thus predators. Lions, leopards, cheetahs : you name it and the rangers will try to find them for you. It’s also good to mention that they don’t just focus on the big five since there’s so much more to see, learn, and explore in such an amazing park.

Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

sandibe okavango dry camp at sunset

Sandibe Okavango

Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge sits in the heart of the Delta, on the edge of a waterway in a wildlife-rich concession bordering Moremi Game Reserve.

The organic design of this luxurious safari lodge blends into the surrounding forest of wild palms and fig trees. The main lodge area features stairs opening into a high ceilinged, copper-toned and glassless space overlooking the Delta. This central dining space has areas leading off it, including wooden viewing decks, an upstairs bar and lounge, and an elevated walkway to a higher viewing platform. Other communal facilities include a gym and private massage room, along with the impressive log boma

The 12 guest suites are designed like weaver nests, peeping out from the forest canopy and raised from the papyrus-lined Delta banks. Each suite comes equipped with picture-perfect views, private plunge pool, and a fireplace for the winter evenings.

Saruni Samburu

Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy, Samburu National Reserve, Kenya

Contributed by Heather at Conversant Traveller

saruni samburu luxury safari lodge

Saruni Samburu is a high-end luxury safari lodge in the Kalama Wildlife Conservancy on the edge of Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya.

Built high up on a ridge, this remote lodge overlooks the vast wilderness plains of the Kalama which are surrounded by the iconic dome-shaped hills of Samburu. The views here are stunning, and animals can be seen moving about in the bush without even leaving the comfort of the lodge.

There are six private villas each with their own verandas, beautifully decorated communal dining and living areas, and two infinity pools that look out over the reserve. With a stylish yet unpretentious feel, Saruni Samburu  is a luxurious and friendly safari experience.

Game drives in the Kalama and Samburu are with local warrior guides who know everything there is to know about the wildlife and landscapes of this remote area. Bushwalks in the Kalama Conservancy are possible as well as night drives, because this is a private reserve rather than a national park. Samburu is well-known for its elephants, and large herds can often be seen congregating around water holes during the dry season.

Bush breakfasts on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro river are a real treat too, with front row seats as the animals come to drink. A safari up here is a real contrast to ones in the Masai Mara and is far less crowded.

Serengeti Migration Camp

Serengeti, Tanzania

The clue’s in the name. Slap-bang on the wildebeest migration route, there aren’t too many better-placed safari lodges in Africa than the Serengeti Migration Camp. Sweeping herds of wildebeest aside, the camp – and a ‘camp’ in the truest sense of the word it genuinely is – is made up of the most luxurious tents imaginable, packed with comfy leather Chesterfields, hardwood floors, and safari-chic roof fans.

SIngita sweni luxurious safari lodge

SIngita Sweni

Located in Kruger National Park,  Singita Sweni Lodge  epitomizes the definition of a lux eco-safari stay. The lodge is located on 33,000 acres of exclusive concession land on the banks of the Sweni River. This meant that hippos, crocs, elephants, and other wildlife can often be spotted meandering past the lodge.

Singita Sweni Lodge offers an intimate setting far away from the crowds associated with Kruger National Park . There are only seven large luxurious suites on-site and each one is designed to bring the outdoors in. They have large floor to ceiling windows, big wooden decks, and modern decor with natural elements incorporated into the design.

For us, one of the highlights of staying at Singita Sweni was their strong focus on sustainability. They have an ethos of “touching the earth lightly” and their efforts were visible in every element of our stay. All meals are crafted with seasonal produce and sourced from local suppliers. Plus, Singita Sweni Lodge is involved in a number of conservation and social initiatives in the community. One such project was the creation of their solar power plant. Its implementation has meant the lodge can save close to 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year.

Of course, we also loved the morning and afternoon game drives. We had many wonderful sightings of lions, giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffalos, hippos, waterbucks, and other antelopes. Plus we came across the most unique sighting of them all – a unique white lion, spotted only in this part of Kruger National Park!

If you are looking into a safari in Africa we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Singita Sweni Lodge for an eco-lux experience. It’s a truly one of a kind destination.

Sossus Dunes Lodge, one of Africa's most luxury safari lodges

Sossus Dunes Lodge,

The luxurious Sossus Dune Lodge  is an eco-friendly lodge in the deep red desert of Namibia’s famous Namib Naukluft National Park . It’s the only lodge within the national park, so one has to stay in this beautiful place to enjoy the sunset or sunrise in the desert. The other alternative is camping, and both the lodge and campsite are run by the Namibian government.

The lodge is located at the base of a mountain, raised several feet off the ground to allow space for tumbling rock, flash floods, wildlife, and plants. Each unit has two round rooms connected at the entrance – a luxurious bedroom and a bathroom. Both rooms have a whole section of windows looking out into the national park with no restrictions. Each unit has its own views, private balcony, self-sufficient solar panels, and water heating systems.

The large common halls include dining, social room, library, and a swimming pool. They serve a set menu for dinner which can accommodate a vegetarian diet but not vegan. We brought our own food because I’m vegan. On special request, the restaurant can pack breakfast for a sunrise trip to the dunes which is much appreciated.

Overall, it’s an excellent place to stay if you’d like to enjoy the most special times of the day in the majestic red dunes, and the chance to spot some of Namibia’s famous desert animals .

Stanley Safari Lodge

Victoria Falls, Zambia

luxury safari lodge - stanley safari lodge, pool and set table at sunset

Before you even so much as clap eyes on the rooms, Stanley Safari Lodge in Zambia has one major feather in its cap: a location right next to one of the world’s most remarkable natural phenomena, the Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls safari lodges are amongst the most coveted of all safaris experiences in Africa, and from the terrace at Stanley, you can see the spray rising from the falls into the air.

Fortunately, the rooms more than live up to the amazing setting, as well – a series of grand, colonial-style cottages with views out across the Zambian plains, they’re everything you could ask for in a luxury lodge for safaris in Africa.

Tarangire Treetops Safari Lodge

Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

Tarangire Treetops Safari Lodge exterior

Not many safaris in Africa give you the opportunity to spend a night up in a tree. At Tarangire Treetops Safari Lodge, however, rooms are hidden away high up in the canopies of a series of huge Marula trees. And quite apart from the novelty value, this treetop vantage point gives you amazing views out over the plains and, of course, fantastic wildlife-spotting opportunities including elephants, lions, giraffes, zebra, and giant ostriches.

Tonbabezi Lodge

The Victoria Falls area of Zambia is home to a number of luxury safari lodges and none more so than the all-inclusive Tongabezi Lodge. Nestled on the banks of the Zambezi River, Tongabezi offers a number of lavish accommodation options, each boasting a private deck from which you can gaze out onto the river and animal spot to your heart’s content.

The lodge’s river cottages are beautifully designed, with large glass windows, high ceilings, and unique features such as bathrooms with a view. After a long day out on safari, you can sink into a bubble bath in one of their gorgeous clawfoot bathtubs, whilst watching the sunset over the river.

The houses at Tongabezi are even more opulent, with some offering private plunge pools and gardens. Both the cottages and lodges have secluded dining areas on their decks and they also each have their own attendant, who acts as a personal concierge and will take care of you for the duration of your stay.

Tongabezi’s ‘all-inclusive’ approach doesn’t just include beautiful accommodation, food, and drinks. The lodge offers a range of activities as standard, including game drives, sunrise/sunset boat trips, and romantic dining experiences.

The lodge is unique in that it also owns a private island on the Zambezi river, on which it operates a luxury eco-lodge. Sindabezi island features just five open-sided chalets, which all offer views across the Zambezi river and into the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Perfect for those who want to get away from it all, Sindabezi island is completely off-grid, but rest assured, you can still enjoy hot water and gourmet cuisine.

Zebra Hills Safari Lodge

Manyoni Private Game Reserve, South Africa

Contributed by Jo Ramani at WanderWithJo.com

Zebra Hills Safari Lodge - super luxury safari lodge

Zebra Hills is nestled in the private game reserve of Manyoni in Zululand, and is a sure shot delight for wildlife enthusiasts. Being part of a private reserve gives the lodge owners and guides a lot of flexibility in terms of game watching and safari hours. This is one of the highlights, alongside the spectacular zebra themed decor in the bedrooms, common areas, bar, and dining room.

The perks of living in a private reserve are aplenty, but my favorite bit was enjoying traditional braai in the evenings whilst you wait for the lions to come for a refreshing sip of water in the adjoining water hole.

This is the only place where I have watched lions on foot. Yes, that’s right. The waterhole is just across the swimming pool/barbeque area and if you stay put, it is easy to spot a few thirsty beasts loitering around to quench their thirst.

With no restrictions on safari hours, the night safaris offered umpteen nocturnal sightings with our top game sightings of the day being three cheetah cubs on a kill followed by a charging black rhino. Such sightings are a dream for true wildlife lovers and Zebra Hills, with its ultra-luxury sleeps and skilled naturalists, made our dream vacation come true.

That’s your lot. What do you think – have you indulged in a luxury safari lodge that you think should be on this list? If so let us know by joining in on the comments section below.

The concept of “safari” has long been imbued with a sense of excitement, romance, and far-flung adventure. But safari accommodation has progressed a very long way from the basic, dusty old tent used by the old explorers!

Nowadays, safari accommodation is offered in a wide range of options from opulent tented camps to luxury safari lodges offering the last word in comfort and style.

The activities on offer have also expanded vastly to offer visitors a memorable and unique experience. Game drives in comfortable state-of-the-art off-road vehicles are led by expert guides who are steeped in local culture, lore, and history and have an encyclopedic knowledge of wildlife and the environment.

Superb service is the norm, while the gourmet cuisine on offer rivals international standards.

The 20 Best Safari Lodges in Africa

After living in Africa for almost a year now, I’ve had my fair share of safari lodges and experiences. But given safari is such a magical experience, whenever I can I keep going back for more. Over the years I have stayed at too many beautiful lodges to count, but like anything, I have my favourites! So these are the best safari lodges in Africa, tried and tested by yours truly.

Post updated May 2023

San Camp Botswana | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

1. San Camp, Botswana

I’ll start with my favourite camp in all of Africa – San Camp in Botswana. While it is far from your ordinary safari camp, I personally think that is what makes it so special. While you won’t find the big five here in the Kalahari desert, this camp hones in on the smaller creatures found in the desert. But more than that, it is about truly disconnecting from your regular life and tuning in to your present. There’s no wifi or electricity in the tents, but there are plenty of opportunities to connect with nature.

Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

2. Sandibe, Botswana

My second favourite lodge in Botswana goes by the name of Sandibe . This is the crowning jewel of AndBeyond’s Botswana portfolio, where they have a number of camps in the Okavango Delta and beyond. Sandibe is the most expensive camp from AndBeyond’s portfolio in Botswana, but it is also the most magical. If you’re looking for a unique honeymoon location, this is your best bet.

And Beyond Sossusvlei | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

3. Sossusvlei Lodge, Namibia

Last year I finally had the chance to visit Namibia. Being based in South Africa next door has given me many more excuses to get out there and experience more of Africa. When we ventured North to Namibia, we checked in to Sossusvlei Desert Lodge . This lodge has recently been refurbished from top to bottom and the results are simply breathtaking. Waking up in the desert is a luxury I will certainly not forget in this lifetime.

Singita Boulders Lodge | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

4. Boulders Lodge, South Africa

Boulders Lodge in South Africa was not my first lodge experience in this country, but it certainly was my favourite! I will never forget sitting out on my deck as I noticed a young elephant drinking from my pool and popping over to say hello! I have since learned this is a regular occurrence at the lodge, so if you are looking for close animal encounters, this is a great lodge to stay for your safari.

Cottars Safari Camp Kenya | World of Wanderlust

5. Cottars Safari Camp, Kenya

When I checked in to Cottars Safari Camp in Kenya, I felt as if I had stepped back in time. The 1920’s safari camp is one of the oldest on offer and it is idyllically located on the fringe of the Maasai Mara. Because the park itself is inundated with safari goers, this is a great alternative to experience more serenity but still remain in close proximity to the park.

Mnemba Island Zanzibar | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

6. Mnemba Island, Zanzibar

Okay, I’m saying it: Mnemba Island is my favourite lodge in all of Africa. While it isn’t a traditional safari lodge, it still deserves a place on this list. With just twelve rooms located on a private island off the coast of Zanzibar, Mnemba Island is the ultimate in barefoot luxury.

Angama Mara Kenya

7. Angama Mara, Kenya

Angama Mara is commonly considered the best safari lodge in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. This newly opened lodge came to the safari scene with much praise, particularly in celebration of the unique location this lodge occupies overlooking the Mara. If you’re looking for a honeymoon location with views for days, this is your best bet in East Africa.

safari lodges africa

8. Bush Villa, Kenya

Although the Bush Villa falls under the umbrella of Cottar’s Safari Camp, I think it is worthy of a mention of its own. This gloriously oversized villa is the perfect choice for large families or big groups to enjoy their own private oasis. The villa is sprawled out above Cottar’s Safari Camp, overlooking the Maasai Mara below. Even Angelina Jolie has been a guest of the Bush Villa!

safari lodges africa

9. Serengeti House, Tanzania

Serengeti House in Tanzania is the top property in Singita’s safari portfolio. This private villa boasts four bedrooms, an infinity swimming pool and a private gym. The villa also comes with a private chef, so you can really kick back and enjoy some alone time with your group.

safari lodges africa

10. Royal Malewane, South Africa

When I checked in to Royal Malewane a few years ago I had already visited a handful of nearby camps. But Royal Malewane has its own appeal, with a unique interior design that makes you feel as if you have stepped back in time. Be sure to visit the day spa where you will find this beautiful lap pool reminiscent of a Moroccan riad.

Bateleur Camp Kenya | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

11. And Beyond Bateleur Camp

During my time in East Africa, I think it is safe to say Bateleur Camp was my favourite safari lodge. This newly refurbished lodge is the perfect mix of old meets new, with all the classic touches but all the mod cons to go with it. The service here was unparalleled to any other camp I stayed at in Kenya.

Staying at the Skybeds Botswana

12. Botswana Sky Beds

For an unforgettable night in the bush, check yourself into Botswana Skybeds . The sky beds are located a short drive from nearby Sable Alley, making it the perfect addition to really immerse yourself in the bush. The sky beds are located up a three story tree house, meaning you are as close as possible to the animal activity throughout the night! This is not only one of the best safari lodges in Africa but also one of the most adventurous.

safari lodges africa

13. Singita Sweni, South Africa

Singita Sweni was one of the first safari lodges I ever stayed at, but that doesn’t mean I have forgotten about it! My experience at this lodge was so memorable, it is forever engrained in my mind. Singita really go above and beyond for their guests, providing gastronomic meals and unbeatable service. They have a few lodges in the area, but Singita Sweni is my personal favourite.

Sable alley Botswana | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

14. Sable Alley, Botswana

Sable Alley is one of the popular choices of safari camps in Botswana. While Botswana is one of the most expensive countries to visit for a safari adventure, this camp is more on the affordable end of the scale. If you are looking for a special escape without the hefty price tag, this camp is moderately priced.

15. Bisate Lodge, Rwanda

Rwanda has become the most sought after country to visit in Africa. Over recent years it has sky rocketed in popularity, mostly thanks to the population of mountain gorillas which have drawn thousands of tourists to the landlocked country. Bisate Lodge is one of the most iconic lodges in the country, with their creative beehive like design.

Thorntree Zambia

16. Thorntree River Lodge, Zambia

Zambia and Zimbabwe are both considered the gateway to Victoria Falls, but if you are looking for something extra special then take a look at Thorntree River Lodge. This peaceful and serene lodge is the epitome of romance, set on the calm banks of the Zambezi river. There is no denying this is one of the best safari lodges in Africa, as it is certainly our top choice for the most romantic.

ngorongoro and beyond

17. Ngorongoro Lodge, Tanzania

East Africa is where you should visit if you are looking for the iconic “Out of Africa” experience. Ngorongoro would have to be one of the most picturesque lodges to choose from, set overlooking the crater itself.

safari lodges africa

18. Jao Camp, Botswana

I know I know, another Botswana recommendation!? Believe me when I say no safari is as magical as one that takes place in the Okavango Delta. Jao Camp is another great option for honeymoon couples looking for something extra special. The carefully curated design makes it one of the most distinguishable camps.

safari lodges africa

19. Singita Kataza, Rwanda

Also in Rwanda, you will find two Singita properties to choose from when looking for the best safari lodges in Africa. Singita Kataza is an extra special lodge set in the mystical mountains of Rwanda, just a short trip from the famous mountain gorillas.

safari lodges africa

20. Chinzombo, Zambia

Last but not least, Chinzombo camp in Zambia is idyllically located on the banks of the Zambezi river. This camp is a popular choice for honeymoon couples who are seeking a serene location by the water. However, if you’re up for some activities, you can opt to canoe on the Zambezi river or partake in a microflight over Victoria Falls. Believe me when I say it is not for the faint hearted!

Travel + Leisure Readers’ 10 Favorite Safari Lodges in Africa of 2023

Majestic wildlife, impeccable service, and lasting memories are all but assured at these remote havens in our annual “World’s Best Awards” survey for 2023.

safari lodges africa

How Voting Works

  • What Readers Loved
  • The Full List

This year’s top 10 safari lodges are spread across Southern and East Africa and represent a range of wildlife experiences, from classic Big Five safaris in South Africa to gorilla trekking in Uganda. A variety of elements factored into readers' votes, including scenery and food, but in the end Travel + Leisure travelers put special importance on wildlife experiences and deft customer service.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

What Readers Loved

At the top of the list, The Bushcamp Company’s Mfuwe Lodge won T+L readers’ hearts thanks to the wildlife for which the property is known — in particular, the elephants that walk right through the reception area to access a large wild mango tree that drops its fruit between late October and mid-December.

Two gorilla-trekking lodges made the top ten, further suggesting that once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters can make a place unforgettable for T+L readers. Rwanda’s Virunga Lodge (No. 2), about an hour’s drive from  Volcanoes National Park, is a base for visiting endangered mountain gorillas, an experience described as “incredible” by one guest. One said it was one of the best places they’d ever visited.

At Gibb’s Farm (No. 8), located amid the  foothills of the Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania, multiple voters wrote in that they wished they could have stayed longer, noting the “exceptional” and “outstanding” service from “friendly and very attentive staff.” The dining showcased excellent quality, according to one guest, while another said the culinary offerings “far exceed[ed] expectations.”

Many properties on the list appeared to have the full package. One reader wrote about Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp (No. 3), also in Tanzania: “An outstanding camp with amazing views, service, and location. The staff was attentive and the food was spectacular.” What more could you want?

Guests visiting The Bushcamp Company’s Mfuwe Lodge from late October to December may witness the same sight as one lucky T+L reader: “A visit is not complete without the elephants walking through the lodge. Young and old, they trooped through, and I stood mesmerized by their presence.” One guest warned you “may have to wait before venturing out of your room to breakfast as the wildlife have the right of passage.” A clear favorite for the wild experiences, other readers also mentioned the excellent food, “the personal touch upon arrival and at almost every contact,” and guides that “know the park — from the Big Five to the smallest flora — better than I know my own home.”

A visit to Mfuwe Lodge is not complete without the elephants walking through the lodge. Young and old, they trooped through, and I stood mesmerized by their presence.

Top 10 most exclusive safari lodges in Africa

Monday newsletters  always feature  top 10 travel lists  to inspire.

Today (March 11, 2019): Top 10 most luxurious safari lodges in Africa.

Africa offers some of the  best wildlife viewing opportunities in the world. The “Big Five” (lion, elephant, rhino, Cape buffalo, and the elusive leopard) take the center stage on a safari but the smaller, less glamorous animals (like impalas, zebras and hyenas) can be just as fun and exciting to see. When it comes to safaris, nothing can beat the observation of the Great Migration in Tanzania’s Serengeti or Kenya’s Masai Mara. Other great safari destinations are the Okavango Delta in Botswana and Kruger National Park in South Africa. No wonder that Africa’s 10 most luxurious safari lodges are all located within these areas. The majority of them is operated by the continent’s three most exclusive safari companies: &Beyond ,  Wilderness Safaris  and  Singita .

There is more information below the slideshow (with reviews & Youtube clips). Do you have a favorite safari lodge that didn’t make my list? Leave a comment  or take my  poll  below.

safari lodges africa

Africa’s wild and wonderful natural spaces have compelled generations of adventurers to seek them out. But gone are the days when going on safari meant roughing it in the wild. With a wide array of opulent safari lodges to choose from, today’s safari-goers have little more to worry about than ticking off the Big Five and deciding whether to order red or white with dinner; all without losing the romance and adventure of days gone by. It’s here, in some of the far-flung corners of incredible African reserves, that you’ll find some of the world’s most luxurious safari lodges.

If you’re looking for luxurious lodges with incredible service, comfort, and indulgence, you could do a lot worse than checking yourself into one of the best and most luxurious safari lodges from my list below. Note that because I simply can’t decide which lodges are the best, I’ve gone alphabetically by country!

Mombo Camp Botswana on game drive.

1. Mombo Camp

Okavango, botswana.

The award-winning Mombo Camp sits amongst the trees on Chief’s Island in the game-packed Moremi Reserve. This is ultimate luxury in the best game viewing area of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Mombo really raises the bar for safari lodges with its combination of fantastic game viewing experiences and the incredible luxury and service in camp. Nine plush tents with private plunge pools will have you relaxing in no time at all. In between game drives, relax in your thatched gazebo and watch buffalo and impala graze on the flood plains below. At night dine under the stars.

The camp is committed to conservation, with much of the power provided by a solar farm and a portion of your rates going toward their preservation projects.

Pro Tip: Little Mombo, situated on Chief’s Island, is a smaller and more intimate camp than its sister and has its own dining and lounge area and a sparkling pool.

Angama view over the Masi Mara.

2. Angama Mara

Masai mara, kenya.

Two 15-tent camps dot the edge of an escarpment about 300 yards above the game reserve at Angama Mara . The location on a hilltop overlooking the plains is breathtaking and unbeatable, with the views over the Great Rift Valley so sensational that you’ll be tempted to just stand and stare, without ever leaving your room. The floor-to-ceiling glass-fronted suites, with handcrafted and designer furniture, and the Masai Mara plains stretching out below you as far as the eye can see, make this a really special place and an exciting addition to the classic tented camps in Kenya.

Each day’s activities are tailored around you: enjoy a morning of game viewing with a delicious picnic breakfast, or opt for a lie-in and catch up with the wildlife later. Add to this exceptional food and drinks, an organic garden where lunches can be enjoyed, the Maasai beading workshop, the spa pavilion with the most well-equipped gym of any lodge in Kenya, a beautiful pool with plenty of sun loungers, a robust activity list, and doting staff, and you have the perfect place to stay for the ultimate and memorable safari experience — ideal for couples or families seeking an African adventure.

The lodge is perfectly complemented by Angama Safari Camp, an exclusive-use mobile tented camp sited deep in the Mara Triangle, and amidst the mega herds during the Great Migration.

Pro Tip: Another draw here is the spot where Meryl Streep and Robert Redford had that iconic photo taken, used to promote the film Out of Africa . Nowadays guests can enjoy a gourmet picnic in this exact location and create their own romantic memories.

Exterior of a luxury tented suite, Mahali Mzuri.

3. Mahali Mzuri

Said by many to be the best safari lodge in Africa, the Richard Branson-owned Mahali Mzuri brings together every element you could ever wish for in your safari experience. Set within the private 33,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy (part of the Masai Mara ecosystem but outside the national park boundaries), the 12 luxury tents, interconnected by walkways, sit on the edge of a gentle rise, looking out over the beautiful landscape. You’ll have a front-row seat, not just to the migration, but also to the abundant game you can see all year round, with monkeys scrabbling in the trees, giraffes wandering through to nibble on acacia trees, and perhaps a leopard stopping to drink from the rocky stream that runs below the camp. Being outside the national park means you get all the richness of wildlife to yourself, with no other cars in sight and no jockeying for position when out on a drive or the annoying chatter of other safari-goers.

Mahali Mzuri means “beautiful place” in Kiswahili, and the camp definitely lives up to its name.

Exterior of tented rooms Little Kulua.

4. Little Kulala

Sossusvlei, namibia.

Situated in a private reserve with exclusive access to the iconic Sossusvlei sand dunes and salt pans in the Namib Desert, the world’s oldest desert, Little Kulala has 11 climate-controlled, thatched “kulalas” (meaning sleep ) which blend perfectly into the desert landscape, each with their own private plunge pool and rooftop bed for star-gazing. The décor is stunning and takes its inspiration from the incredible surroundings with neutral colors, gorgeous textures, and expert use of the natural light.

You can choose from a range of activities here including nature walks/drives, hot-air balloon safaris, and eco-sensitive quad biking excursions. Desert adapted wildlife, such as ostrich, springbok, and gemsbok eke out a harsh existence in the surrounding landscape, and larger carnivores, like the spotted and brown hyena and occasionally cheetah, are sometimes present.

Birds nest rooms Bistate.

5. Bisate Lodge

Volcanoes national park, rwanda.

Built within an eroded volcanic cone, Bisate was the first lodge in Rwanda to combine world-class luxury with a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking experience. The lodge’s one-of-a-kind design pays homage to traditional hut design, while the sumptuous interiors offer comfort, warmth, and luxury with fantastic amenities like cozy fireplaces and a well-stocked wine cellar. Bisate Lodge is one of Africa’s most talked-about camps, not only because of the great mountain gorilla viewing opportunities but because of its incredible design, with the rooms resembling giant bird’s nests.

View from the bath Londolozi.

6. Londolozi Private Granite Suites

Sabi sands, south africa.

This elegant and luxurious lodge only has three suites, with stone walls, polished concrete, and a color scheme of charcoal, silver, and elephant gray, and it offers complete exclusivity. Each of the suites at Londolozi Private Granite Suites opens out onto a heated infinity pool and magnificent views over the granite rocks of the Sand River. Sabi Sands is known as one of Kruger’s finest private concessions and is renowned for leopard sightings. Londolozi was the first game reserve in the world to be given Relais & Châteaux status, and this place could definitely be your ultimate luxury safari experience.

Lion on game drive.

It’s not all about luxury though; Londolozi is involved with community upliftment, rural education, and healthcare programs. The creation of protected areas has also meant that rhinos and other iconic species can roam freely here. These are just some of the ways your safari is having a positive impact on local people and wildlife.

Royal Malawane Pool.

7. Royal Malewane

Thornybush private reserve, south africa.

Royal Malewane strikes the perfect balance between stylish splendor and relaxed retreat. Situated in a private concession within the Greater Kruger National Park, this famous safari lodge hosts no more than 20 guests at a time, in luxury and style. Six suites, each with a private infinity pool, offer total seclusion with stunning views, while the lodge itself has an atmospheric library, curio shop, and dining and sitting areas with fantastic outlooks over the bush. There are also two completely private suites each sleeping four for an even more exclusive safari experience.

There’s also the self-contained Africa House, just a few minutes’ drive from the main lodge, which is the perfect accommodation option for families or friends with space for up to 12 people. With private chalets and impeccable service, game drives that deliver great wildlife, a butler service , unforgettable culinary experiences, and, of course, their award-winning safari spa, it’s no wonder high-profile visitors celebrities such as Nicolas Sarkozy and Bono have chosen to stay here.

Pool at Singita Sweni.

8. Singita Sweni Lodge

Kruger national park, south africa.

Located in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Singita Sweni epitomizes the very definition of safari luxury. The lodge is located on 33,000 acres of private concession land on the banks of the Sweni River, with hippos, crocs, elephants, and other wildlife often to be spotted meandering past the lodge. Located far away from the crowds that are often associated with Kruger National Park, Singita Sweni Lodge offers an intimate setting with its seven large and luxurious suites, each designed to bring the feeling of the outdoors in. Large floor-to-ceiling windows, big wooden decks, and a combination of modern décor and natural elements are all incorporated into the design.

The lodge has a strong focus on sustainability, and an ethos of a minimal footprint and touching the earth lightly. Menus are designed around seasonal produce, with many of the ingredients sourced from local suppliers. The lodge is also involved in a number of local conservation and social initiatives, including a solar power plant, which has meant the lodge saves on close to 1,000 tons of carbon emissions each year. This is an eco-lux safari experience and definitely a one-of-a-kind destination.

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge lounge.

9. Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Ngorongoro, tanzania.

With views from the rim of the world’s largest intact caldera enough to take your breath away, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is not just a stunning location; it also somehow captures the romance of its location with its timeless elegance and design. Circular clay buildings with thatch roofs create a warm and inviting space, while opulent furnishings, with brocade sofas, gilt mirrors, and beaded chandeliers, all transform the rooms into truly beautiful spaces. Located right on the rim of the ancient volcanic Ngorongoro Crater, the lodge offers not only some of the best views in Africa but also the opportunity for a fantastic safari, as the crater floor is teaming with wildlife.

Tented suite singita Sabora.

10. Singita Grumeti Reserve

Serengeti, tanzania.

Singita in the Grumeti Reserve, Tanzania, offers a variety of accommodation options with something for every style: crystal chandeliers and gilded frames at Sasakwa Lodge, rattan chairs and campaign tables at Sabora Tented Camp, and breezy furnishings and woven basket-style light fixtures at Faru Faru Lodge. Each is special in their own way.

Faru Faru lodge game drive.

Sasakwa Lodge is a great choice for families or groups who enjoy the bush but still want to have all the luxuries of a five-star establishment. With impeccable service and exceptional facilities, this grand Edwardian-style manor house and stone cottages offer a private slice of the Serengeti and boasts antiques, glittering chandeliers, and plush sofas that invite you to sink into them and gaze out across the Serengeti plains; but even these opulent interiors can’t compete with the incredible views stretching out across the seemingly endless plains.

Faru Faru Lodge is built on a gently sloping hill and positioned on the great migration route that’s traversed annually by more than two million wildebeests. Informal, unconventional, and surprising at every turn, Faru Faru has seven one-bedroom suites, one family suite, and a two-bedroom suite with a private pool. With close proximity to the river and plains, guests have the unique opportunity to enjoy a close connection with the wilderness.

Sabora Tented Camp strikes the perfect balance between classic tented safari and timeless modernity and is located right on the Serengeti Plains, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the setting and enjoy Sabora’s understated yet tailored luxury. With superb game viewing opportunities all year round, Sabora’s nine tented suites are set on the Great Wildebeest Migration route.

Luxury Room Chinzombo.

11. Time + Tide Chinzombo

South luangwa, zambia.

Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park is one of Africa’s hidden treasures, boasting incredible untouched natural beauty, great walking safaris, and crowd-free big game viewing. Set in this relatively unexplored reserve on a sweeping curve of the Luangwa River, lies the sophisticated and elegant Chinzombo , with just six gorgeous villas, designed by award-winning architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens. Time + Tide Chinzombo is one of Zambia’s most exclusive safari lodges. The beautiful and luxurious villas combine a modern architectural feel with natural materials such as leather, reeds, and canvas

Each villa boasts its own private plunge pool and is situated on an elevated deck with views of the river and the abundant wildlife that visit its banks. A boat ride across the river gives guests direct access to the game-rich national park. Chic and remote, this is definitely one for your bucket list.

Nyamatusi Camp Bedroom.

12. Nyamatusi Camp

Mana pools, zimbabwe.

The beautiful Nyamatusi is a wonderful luxurious haven in one of the wildest parts of Southern Africa, Mana Pools, on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. The camp comprises six spacious, luxury canvas suites with private plunge pools and air-conditioning, essential for those hot dry season months. The focus at Nyamatusi is on experiencing the area through walking safaris led by an experienced professional guide. Fabulous game viewing opportunities abound, especially African wild dogs and elephants, and if you want to try your hand at the iconic tiger fish, then you’ve come to the right place. A carefully curated wine cellar will doubtless enhance your safari along with the excellent meals.

And there you have it, my favorites amongst the many outstanding and luxurious safari lodges in Africa. I hope I’ve inspired you to take a luxurious African adventure of your own.

A first-timer’s guide to the 22 best safaris in Africa

Going on a safari in Africa offers an unparalleled adventure into the continent’s stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife. South Africa is famous for the Big Five: lions, elephants, leopards, rhinoceros and buffaloes. Otherwise, intrepid travellers can find exceptional safari escapes in Kenya, Botswana, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Namibia.

Game drives in an open-top 4WD

When is the best time to go on safari in Africa?

Generally speaking, the best time to go on any safari is during the dry season from June to October.

South Africa/Botswana/Zimbabwe/Zambia

May to October is the dry season. Visit during the hotter and drier months when animals tend to congregate around waterholes and vegetation is sparse, making animal spotting easier. The wet season runs from December to March, a hot and humid time of year that is great for lush landscapes, birdwatching, and seeing newborn animals.

East Africa

Game viewing is possible all year round, however you can expect the ‘long rain’ season from April to May, and the ‘short rain’ season from November to December. Safaris are generally open during the ‘short rains’ season, while they typically close during the ‘long rains’.

Kenya/Tanzania

These countries are best to visit from January to March and June to October when the climate is dry and mild. Visit Tanzania to see the Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti from January to September. While the migration patterns change depending on rain, calves are usually born around January to March in the south of the Serengeti, then they cross the rivers around July and August. Lions often follow in their wake. Visit the Masai Mara in Kenya from June to November to witness the migration.

Going on safari in Ghana is best done from September to October when the dry season is in full swing, offering cooler days and the opportunity to see the migration in the Masai Mara.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda

Hikes into the rainforest to see the gorillas are undertaken all year round, however, the weather conditions are more favourable in January, February, and from June to September, when it is cooler and drier.

What do I need to pack to go on safari?

  • Keep luggage to a minimum and pack light
  • Lightweight clothing in earthy colours and natural materials
  • A windbreaker or fleece jumper to ward off the morning and evening chill
  • Hat, sunglasses and a scarf or bandana to protect your neck from the cold, sunburn or bugs
  • Comfortable and durable walking shoes for casual bush walks or game drives
  • High-quality waterproof hiking boots if you plan to do gorilla trekking, plus lightweight wool socks
  • Smart-casual shoes and clothing for afternoons and evenings at your safari lodge or camp, such as jeans, shirts, dresses
  • Your survival kit should include malaria tablets, antihistamines, anti-nausea tablets if you suffer from car sickness, panadol, aspirin, insect repellent, sunscreen, bands aids and a basic anti-bacterial/anti-septic cream
  • Portable battery pack
  • Chargers for phones and electronic devices
  • Binoculars

What to expect on your first safari

The things you can expect to experience on a safari depend on the season, location and style of your safari expedition, be it a tour, lodge or otherwise. Given the unpredictable nature of the weather and animals, safari itineraries can change with no notice. However, there are a few things you can expect to experience on the best safaris in Africa.

  • Two game drives per day, usually early morning and late afternoon or early evening
  • Time to relax during the hottest part of the day, from late morning to afternoon, and in the evenings
  • Night safari drives with spotlights for nocturnal animals
  • Depending on your location, tour and/or accommodation: guided bush walks, photography hides, drinks or meals on location at scenic lookouts, hot air balloon rides, canoeing in a traditional mokoro or horseback riding

Which African country has the safest safari?

Botswana and Rwanda are considered some of the safest countries in Africa.

What is the difference between national parks, reserves and private game reserves?

The distinction between a national park and a private game reserve lies in ownership and management. National parks are government-owned and managed, while private game reserves are owned and operated by private entities, often lodges. Despite the difference in ownership, both adhere to strict conservation principles and wildlife protection regulations. Reserves are smaller and less developed than national parks, with less tourist facilities.

22 of the best safaris in Africa

Etosha national park, namibia.

Regarded as the gateway to Northern Namibia and Ovamboland, Etosha National Park is a lush environment surrounded by dunes and golden, grassy plains. Four of the Big Five are found here (no buffaloes here, unfortunately), along with zebra, the rare black-faced impala, oryx, cheetah, giraffe, eland and hyena.

South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

The best safaris in Africa aren’t always the most well-known. Brimming with a variety of wildlife, South Luangwa National Park is framed by the Muchinga escarpment, and you’ll find elusive species here, such as the hartebeest, sable and roan. Visitors can also expect to encounter elephants, hippos, and the impala’s fluffy cousin, the puku.

Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Home to a diverse arrangement of African wonders such as elephants, African buffalo, Ugandan kob, hippopotamus, topi, waterbuck, warthog, giant forest hog, Nile crocodile, leopard, spotted hyena, chimpanzee and lion, visitors to Queen Elizabeth National Park are in for a treat.

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Home to the beloved and endangered mountain gorilla, this national park is comprised of montane ecosystems such as bamboo forest, open grasslands, swamp and heath. While Volcanoes National Park isn’t where you’ll do the usual Big Five spotting, it is home to unique animals such as black and white colobus monkeys, golden monkeys, hyenas, elephants, buffaloes and baboons. It’s undoubtedly one of the best safaris in Africa.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

There are two gorilla trekking destinations in Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi tends to be the more popular choice as it has a greater population of gorillas and is better situated for fly-in safaris. In addition to the majestic gorillas, those trekking this park may also see elephants, duikers, golden cats, bush pigs, giant forest hogs, the clawless otter, side-striped jackal or civet.

South Africa

Madikwe game reserve.

Positioned in the North West Province close to the border of Botswana, Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the best safaris in Africa. The malaria-free reserve is famous for being home to the ‘Super Seven’: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, cheetahs and the endangered African wild dog.

Kruger National Park

The well-known Kruger National Park is the largest wildlife sanctuary in South Africa. Here, you’ll not only find the Big Five, but more species of large mammals than any other African game reserve. Expect giraffes, hyenas, jackals, honey badgers, warthogs, impalas and more.

Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve

Regarded as one of the most prestigious game reserves in South Africa, Sabi Sand has a reputation for incredible leopard and lion sightings.

Gondwana Game Reserve

Located along the Garden Route, a trail of ancient forest, gold beaches, mountain ranges and seaside towns in South Africa, Gondwana Game Reserve is malaria-free and home to the Big Five, plus Cape Mountain zebra. It’s also one of the only Big Five fynbos reserves in the world, one of the world’s six Floral Kingdoms identified for its vast array of plant species.

Solio Game Reserve, Kenya

Despite its small size, this privately operated game reserve is Kenya’s oldest rhino sanctuary and an important breeding ground for black rhinos. It’s likely visitors to the 71-square-kilometre reserve will see oryxes, hartebeests, giraffes, lions, hyenas and buffaloes.

Amboseli National Park

This national park is known for its massive elephant population and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. It was added to UNESCO’s Tentative List in June 2023 and offers one of the best safaris in Africa.

Tsavo National Park

Tsavo National Park is divided into two parts: East and West, and is home to herds of elephants, rhinos, buffalo, lions, leopards, pods of hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, lesser Kudu and gerenuk.

Masai Mara National Reserve

With vast savannah plains that roll up to the border of Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Masai Mara is a premier safari location in Kenya, and one of the best safaris in Africa, known for its diverse wildlife. Lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, wildebeest, giraffe and zebra roam these lands, along with many other animals.

Tanzania

Serengeti national park.

Located in north-central Tanzania on the Serengeti Plain, this national park is the only place in Africa where huge land-animal migrations take place, particularly wildebeest, gazelle and zebras. Serengeti has been UNESCO World Heritage-listed since 1981.

Nyerere National Park

Formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park spans a whopping 30, 893 square kilometres, is the largest standalone park in Africa and one of the largest in the world. Located in Southern Tanzania, the park has a high concentration of wild animals, including big cats, giraffes, elephants, rhinos and more, making it one of the best safaris in Africa.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is situated within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania, encompassing part of the southern Serengeti’s short-grass plains and the Ngorongoro Highlands, a range of ancient volcanoes along the western Great Rift Valley. Formed around 2.5 million years ago from a volcanic cone collapse, it’s the largest unbroken volcanic caldera on Earth and serves as a natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s densest populations of large mammals, creating a self-contained ecosystem that is unique, even among the very best safaris in Africa.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is Tanzania’s largest national park, formed in 2008 when it merged with the Usangu Game Reserve, expanding to more than 20,000 square kilometres. Ruaha is a hidden treasure with just a handful of camps, making it a favourite among seasoned East African safari-goers who appreciate its wild, unspoiled character and exceptional game viewing.

Botswana

Okavango delta.

The Okavango Delta, a unique wetland spanning up to 15,000 square kilometres of Botswana’s Kalahari Desert, is sustained by the Okavango River flowing from Angola. Home to some of the world’s most endangered species, such as cheetahs, white and black rhinos, African wild dogs and lions, the delta offers some of the best safaris in Africa, including walking, riding, mokoro, boating, balloon, and helicopter safaris.

Chobe National Park

Botswana’s Chobe National Park is home to Africa’s largest elephant population, with an estimated 50,000 Kalahari elephants, known for their massive herd sizes. A safari here ensures unforgettable encounters with these magnificent animals.

Moremi Game Reserve

The Moremi Game Reserve, often called a ‘Garden of Eden,’ offers some of the best safaris in Africa with year-round game viewing and breathtaking landscapes, including savannahs, floodplains and dense forests. Home to more than 400 bird species, such as the African fish eagle and crested crane, the reserve showcases a diverse ecosystem adapted to the Okavango Delta’s swamp conditions.

Hwange National Park

As Zimbabwe’s largest and most popular park, Hwange National Park offers exceptional wildlife viewing, including the Big Five. It is renowned for its impressive concentration of elephants, especially during the dry season when they gather at the park’s waterholes.

Mana Pools National Park

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mana Pools National Park in northern Zimbabwe is renowned for its remote beauty, abundant wildlife, and superb canoeing and walking safaris. Although the dry season (July to October) is hot, it’s the best time for game viewing as animals flock to the park’s water sources. If you can withstand the heat, it’s one of the best safaris in Africa.

What our guests say about Jayson

June 14, 2024
While we have not traveled as yet
While we have not traveled as yet, the itinerary that we developed is very exciting and we are looking forward to this experience very much. Jayson Scheffers has been a wonderfully engaged and responsive partner in developing our agenda, despite our having some needs to change travel dates and agendas during the planning process because of family illness that necessitated our changing plans.
June 12, 2024
My first experience a number of months…
My first experience a number of months back wasn't as I wanted. I picked up with Dolan a little after this to find when the best time to Safari was with the chance of seeing the "big 5" and he was so helpful, guiding me to July-September. With the cooler winter months being the better chances to see more wildlife and the big five. This lead me on to deal with Jayson. Jayson has pulled out all the stops, working past 9pm Cape Town time( 8pm London UK) to help meet my needs. I travel out on 6th July and cannot wait, Thank you Dolan and Jayson. Julian Bingle, London, UK.

I Stayed at One of the Few Black-owned Safari Camps in Africa — Here’s Why You Should, Too

The multibillion-dollar safari tourism industry is overwhelmingly controlled by foreign nationals and corporations.

I recently embarked on an exciting adventure in Tanzania ’s famed Serengeti, where I learned there’s no better place to witness the intricate harmony of nature’s ecosystems than on an African safari. And while the Serengeti boasts a stunning array of roughly 150 safari properties, ranging from opulent lodges to rustic camping tents, there's also a glaring disparity: the lucrative multibillion-dollar safari tourism industry is overwhelmingly controlled by foreign nationals and corporations.

I had the privilege of staying at one of the few Black-owned safari properties in Africa. This opportunity granted me an even more extraordinary perspective on this awe-inspiring wilderness — and it highlighted why tourists should try to find Black-owned businesses.

"Indigenous and Black ownership ensures that the benefits of tourism are shared more equitably and the cultural and ecological values of the region are preserved and promoted authentically."

Beks Ndlovu, Founder of African Bush Camps

When I arrived at Kantabile Afrika 's Cherero Camp, the staff greeted my family with open arms, embodying the ujamaa spirit. We spent our days exploring the vast plains on game drives, spotting incredible wildlife, and feasting on gourmet meals, including a magical sunrise bush breakfast on the savanna.

The camp’s spacious tents felt like home, featuring beautiful hardwood floors, plush king beds, double vanity sinks, and refreshing rain showers. From my tent’s elevated terrace, I enjoyed basking in the sweeping views of the Serengeti, dotted with acacia trees, golden grasses, and grazing zebras and wildebeests.

Kantabile Arika was founded in 2018 by Godwin Temba, a member of the Chagga tribe originating from the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro , and his wife Vivian. Temba started in the tourism industry as a porter for mountain climbers. He became a mountain guide and safari guide before taking the leap of faith to establish his own tour company, Amani Afrika , in 2007. With no generational wealth, he says, “bootstrapping this business with no foreign investment was no small feat.”

Now, his company operates two exclusive enclaves of six luxury tents in the Serengeti: Aurari Camp and Cherero Camp. Temba told Travel + Leisure he infuses his camps with a profound respect for the environment, employing regenerative practices such as using solar-powered energy and forgoing swimming pools or bathtubs since the “search for water is the story of the Serengeti."

His camps also foster a deep connection to his homeland and reflect the guiding principle ujamaa or familyhood, a communitarian belief he says is “distinct from Western individualism.” Temba prioritizes hiring villagers, recent graduates, and women and allocates a portion of profits to support a local school.

According to the African Travel & Tourism Association (ATTA), a trade association promoting tourism in Africa, approximately 20 percent of its member organizations have Black owners — and this percentage has been gradually increasing in recent years.

Beks Ndlovu, founder of African Bush Camps and a member of the ATTA, operates 18 properties across Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Zambia, employing nearly 700 staff. In addition to traditional game drives, his camps include exciting activities like starlit dinners and canoe safaris.

At Somalisa Camp, Ndlovu’s first safari property, guests can sleep under the stars at a secluded, romantic tree house overlooking a watering hole or observe elephants right outside their tents at the “elephant pool,” which forms a natural extension of the main property. Like Temba, Ndlovu’s love for Africa extends beyond providing high-end safari experiences. He is deeply involved in supporting local communities through his African Bush Camps Foundation, guided by three core principles: education, community empowerment, and conservation.

Several other Black-owned safari proprietors are making their mark on the continent. Among them is Bushman Plains Camp in Botswana, helmed by three visionary brothers who are descendants of the nomadic Bukakwe bushmen; Batoka Africa , the first Black female-owned safari lodge group, operating two eco-friendly luxury properties in Zimbabwe; and Zebra Plains Collection in Kenya, which has three distinct luxury safari properties near the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

For a truly one-of-a-kind experience, guests at South Africa's Kruger Shalati can stay in one of 24 train carriage suites or seven bridge house suites suspended above the Sabie River. The property also offers thrilling bush walks, train trackside dinners, and scenic helicopter flights.

Not only do each of these properties offer a luxurious escape, but they’re also beacons of economic empowerment within their respective communities. Ndlovu says, “Indigenous and Black ownership ensures that the benefits of tourism are shared more equitably and the cultural and ecological values of the region are preserved and promoted authentically.” For Temba, Black ownership means keeping money within the country instead of sending it overseas. “Black ownership sets a powerful example of what is attainable, which can inspire future generations to continue breaking down barriers," he said.
