Red Hot Summer Tour Announcement

December 21, 2023 • No Comments • News

With Jimmy Barnes currently recovering from open heart surgery and unable to perform at the Red Hot Summer Tour shows at Kiama Showground (NSW) on Saturday 6 January, Mornington Racecourse (VIC) on Saturday 13 January and Mary Ann Reserve in Mannum (SA), we’re thrilled to announce the expanded line ups for these already star-studded events. These three concerts in summer holiday destinations are remaining on the planned dates to minimize inconvenience to all the visitors who have already bought tickets.

Jon Stevens will be added to the three shows performing a set of Noiseworks and INXS hits, together with The Living End, Birds of Tokyo, Pete Murray, Kasey Chambers and Sam + Sam.

Closing the shows will be Jimmy’s whole live band fronted by Mahalia Barnes and featuring Oz Rock royalty: Jon Stevens, Chris Cheney, David Campbell (Mannum only) and his legendary Cold Chisel bandmate, Ian Moss, performing a very special set of classic songs by Cold Chisel and Jimmy Barnes, compiled by Jimmy himself.

The three Red Hot Summer Tour shows currently scheduled for February will be moved to April to give Jimmy time to fully recover. Those new dates are Saturday 6 April at Roche Estate in the Hunter Valley (NSW), Saturday 13 April at the Launceston Country Club in Tasmania and Saturday, 27 April at the Bendigo Jockey Club (VIC).

Unfortunately, despite all our efforts to reschedule the show in Batemans Bay currently slated for Saturday 27 January, this event will not be going ahead due to the artists’ availabilities. Ticket holders will be contacted directly by Ticketmaster and provided with a full refund.

Jimmy said,  “It’s been an eventful few weeks to say the least but one thing that’s put a big smile on my face are the mates I have around me who have my back. Thank you so much to my dear friends Mossy, Jon and Chris who will be joining my wonderful, powerhouse of a daughter to perform special, unique shows for you in January with my live band. In my home state of South Australia, my son David Campbell will also join them on stage to round out this amazing supergroup of family and friends. I’m a lucky guy.

“I’m going to be working hard to get back to full strength over the next few months so I can get back on stage for you in April and join my friends from The Living End and Birds of Tokyo as well as Pete, Kasey and Mahalia & The Soul Mates on stage in the Hunter Valley, Launceston and Bendigo.”

Ticketmaster will be in touch directly with all account holders in coming hours.

Meanwhile, Jimmy is recovering nicely from open heart surgery and humbled by the outpouring of love and support from fans. Posters have even started popping up over Sydney wishing him well.

Jane Barnes posted, “Wow! This giant poster is up opposite Ashfield station in Sydney. We are so moved by the phenomenal support from everyone, this has certainly brought a smile to Jimmy’s face and to his heart. Thank you Rock Posters”.

Jimmy will leave hospital tomorrow (Friday 22 December 2023) and be home for Christmas.

Kiama's Red Hot Summer Tour Sizzles

Kiama's Red Hot Summer Tour Sizzles

The Red Hot Summer Tour, held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the Kiama Showground, truly lived up to its name, attracting thousands of locals and visitors on a stunning summers day.

Despite headliner Jimmy Barnes being unable to perform due to ongoing recovery from open-heart surgery, the event showcased an expanded lineup of talent. Jon Stevens, accompanied by his entourage, delivered a stellar set featuring Noiseworks and INXS hits, followed by a performance by The Living End before the grand finale. The stage saw outstanding acts from Birds of Tokyo, a crowd-favourite, Pete Murray, Kasey Chambers, and Sam + Sam.

The concert, which has faced challenges in the past, including six washouts in Kiama and COVID disruptions, finally enjoyed favourable weather. In March 2020 the event was postponed four times, to October 2020, then March 2022, then to 3 April 2022 and finally ran on 16 October 2022 successfully.

Fans remained loyal during this whole process of delay, many remembering the tremendous success of the 18 March 2017 sold-out Red Hot Summer Tour concert at the Showground with John Farnham, James Reyne, Daryl Braithwaite and Shannon Noll.

Damien Hatfield and Annabelle Chapman from Palm Beach with Sammy and Alex Coombes (Gerringong). Damien thought Pete Murray set was great and thought it was "unreal" that he would see Ian Moss playing later.

The tour returned in 2018 and 2019 before the long hiatus with Covid from 2020 to 2022 finally back last year in October at the Kiama Pavilion.

With the intense heat, some attendees left early, even though there was a no-return policy. However, Kiama’s seaside location provided a refreshing sea breeze for those who sought relief. With attendees advised to bring camp chairs, the festival maintained a feel-good, relaxed atmosphere, complete with a lively mosh pit in front of the stage.

Paramedics reported running out of sunscreen, emphasising the need for festival-goers to “be prepared with essentials like sunscreen, water, hats and even tampons”. Red Hot Summer hats became a popular choice among the crowd, proving a boon for the merchandise stall.

Event organiser Duane McDonald, expressed his relief at the fantastic weather. After the series of washouts at Kiama it was a great bonus. Sally Kearney, managing the merchandise stall, praised Duane for running a fantastic operation, highlighting the close-knit team's years of collaboration. “We’re a family organisation with team members becoming family as well.”

The Red Hot Summer Tour caused the inevitable traffic grid in Kiama main streets. Listening to pre show advice, many visitors opted for train travel, with trains arriving packed to capacity prior to the event, and festival-goers walking down to the Showground from the Kiama Railway Station.

The Evolution Traffic Control team however reported smooth patron entry, though they acknowledged there is always traffic chaos post-event when party-goers leave the stadium.

Festival-goers shared their standout moments, with mentions of Kasey Chambers' Eminem cover and Pete Murray's exceptional performance. Birds of Tokyo energised the crowd and the whole event rocked. The final act, hosted by Jimmy’s daughter Mahalia Barnes showcased iconic Barnes and Chisel songs sung by Australian artists Jon Stevens (though kiwi born), Chris Cheney, Ian Moss and previous performers, closing the day on a high note. Jimmy Barnes expressed gratitude for the support of his fellow musicians and the unique show they presented.

Despite the challenges of putting on such a huge event, the Red Hot Summer Tour in Kiama proved to be a resounding success, delighting both the event organisers and the enthusiastic crowd in attendance.

Red Hot Summer Tour Cancels Some Dates, Reschedules Others Over COVID-19 Concerns

The remaining dates of the 10-year anniversary of the Red Hot Summer Tour have been either cancelled or postponed, with organisers citing concerns over the spread of coronavirus.

The tour has been going for several months and celebrating great rock around Australia, with ARIA Hall of Fame inductees Hunters & Collectors reuniting for headline duties, as well as James Reyne, The Living End, The Angels, Baby Animals, Killing Heidi and Boom Crash Opera.

After working around the clock to find appropriate alternative dates since the Government banned all events over 500 pax last Friday, organisers have announced that dates in Kiama, Ballarat and the Barossa will be moved to October 2020, with ticket-holders encouraged to hang on to their current ticket.

However, dates in Wodonga, Dubbo, Cairns, Mornington and Noose have been cancelled, with no alternative venues or dates able to be found.

Organisers said punters will receive a full refund over these cancelled dates.

“We have made every effort to reschedule all of the dates left on this tour,” apologised promoter Duane McDonald.

“We are experiencing uncertain times and we appreciate the support we have received from everyone as we have worked to make a plan forward.

“If we haven’t been able to reschedule your show, we will return to your town next summer with our 2021 line up. Thank you everyone for your support this year – please stay safe.”

The tour began on January 4 in Bendigo, and was planned to cover most of the country, from Queensland’s tropical north, all the way to Western Australia, the Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales.

2020 represented the 10-year anniversary since Aussie promoter McDonald first organised the Red Hot Summer Tour in 2011.

Saturday, 25th January 2020 — CANCELLED Mornington Racecourse, Mornington (VIC)

Sunday, 26th April 2020 — CANCELLED Noosa & District Sports Complex, Tewantin (QLD)

Red Hot Summer Tour 2020

Due to the direction from State Governments and Health Officials that mass gatherings of more than 500 people are banned to stem the spread of COVID-19, the RED HOT SUMMER TOUR has postponed or cancelled the remaining dates planned for its 2020. The Kiama, Ballarat and Barossa performances will be postponed until October 2020. Ticket holders will automatically have their tickets transferred to the new event. For those unable to attend the new date, they are encouraged to contact their point of purchase for a refund. Unfortunately, the events planned for Wodonga, Dubbo, Darwin, Cairns, Mornington and Noosa have been cancelled and will not be going ahead. Ticketholders will receive a full refund.

About 5000 festival-goers were set to descend on Kiama Showground for the tour, with performances by classic Australian acts including Hunters & Collectors, James Reyne, The Living End, Killing Heidi, The Angels, Baby Animals and Boom Crash Opera.

A cancellation announcement was made on the Red Hot Summer Tour's official Facebook page about 10.30am.

"Due to severe on site winds causing site and infrastructure damage, plus continues gale force warnings for the remainder of the day, the risk factors for patrons and staff are extreme and as such we cannot proceed with today's event," the post read.

"Winds on the site are continuing to gust at over 100km per hour."

The date for the concert has been rescheduled to October 17.

Killing Heidi.

The cancellation comes a day after tour organisers advised that Saturday's sold-out event in Kiama would go ahead despite coronavirus concerns.

On Friday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison effectively placed a ban on all non-essential gatherings of more than 500 people across Australia in a tougher approach to the coronavirus crisis.

The move, which will not start until Monday, does not apply to schools, universities, public transport or airports.

The annual Sydney Royal Easter Show cancelled its 2020 show soon after Mr Morrison's announcement, becoming one of the first major casualties of the decision.

President of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Robert Ryan OAM said it was distressing and disappointing to cancel the Show for 2020.

"There are many people who will be very upset by this decision, and this is the first time the Sydney Royal Easter Show has been cancelled because of a public health emergency since the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1919," he said.

The NRL announced games would be played in empty stadiums in round two with clubs advised to comply with government advice to ban large gatherings from Monday.

The governing body has cleared Canberra and North Queensland to host their round one Friday night games despite growing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

Crowds are allowed to attend those fixtures with the league to reassess the situation on Saturday morning for five remaining games over the weekend.

Mr Morrison and state and territory leaders agreed on strongly recommending the limits on gatherings at the Council of Australian Governments meeting on Friday.

The move was recommended by Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy and the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee.

Mr Morrison also advised Australians against travelling overseas unless it is essential.

"Only essential travel should be considered if you are going overseas from this point forward," Mr Morrison said.

Mr Morrison said the government's advice on the restrictions on gatherings was "a scalable precautionary response."

He said he would still be attending the Sharks-Souths rugby league clash on Saturday, although "it might be the last game I get to go to for a long time".

Mr Morrison said, if churches held services for more than 500 people, they would have to consider holding more with fewer numbers.

There is speculation the state government will announce the cancellation of the Royal Easter Show.

A response is awaited from the the NRL and AFL.

Even before the announcement, the Australian Formula One Grand Prix and Supercars' round, which was to be held in Melbourne this weekend, was cancelled.

Cricket Australia has banned spectators from Australia's three-match one-day series against New Zealand in Sydney and Hobart.

The World Surf League has cancelled the opening event of the 2020 Championship Tour - the Corona Open on the Gold Coast from March 26.

The number of coronavirus cases in NSW has risen to 92, with 14 new cases reported between 1pm on Thursday and 11am today (Friday).

NSW Health listed the new cases, advising whether they were travellers, but no residential information was provided, which is now the general practice.
