Pack for warm weather – expect warm summers and mild winters in Queensland, with majority sunny days. The state is subtropical in the south, and tropical up north – it’s the latter that experiences a defined wet season through summer, that’s humid and hot, with a slightly cooler dry season through winter. When it comes to what to wear, casual, lightweight clothes are reliable. Temperatures can drop in the southern part of the state, where a jacket or sweatshirt may also be required. But no matter where you are in Queensland, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are always recommended alongside a long-sleeve shirt to protect you from the state’s strong UV ra

Fact checked

Far from just providing roadside assistance to Queensland motorists, the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) offers banking, home, car and travel insurance to millions across Australia. The Brisbane company was founded almost 120 years ago and has more than 1.7 million members today.

Savvy can help you compare RACQ's policies with those of other insurers in the market by breaking down their insurance products for you. You'll be able to weigh up factors such as inclusions and exclusions, claim limits and premiums.

More about RACQ travel insurance

What travel insurance policies does racq offer.

RACQ offers several travel insurance policies , including:

  • International Premium: RACQ’s most comprehensive international policy provides unlimited hospital and medical expense coverage, as well as coverage in other areas such as luggage and cruise insurance. You’ll also get 24/7 emergency assistance, whether holidaying in Jamaica or taking a much-needed trip to New York. This policy comes with limited coverage for COVID-19-related costs, which includes reimbursement of medical treatment and any cancellation fees or booking deposits if you need to cancel due to testing positive.
  • International Standard: this policy offers fewer benefits than RACQ’s premium policy. For those who choose this option, you’ll miss out on COVID-19 benefits, but you’ll still get coverage for medical treatment, travel delays, personal liability and cancellation fees.
  • International Saver: designed for those travelling on a budget, this policy covers total medical costs, some emergency expenses, loss of luggage and personal liability. However, you won’t be reimbursed for the excess on a rental car or any cancellation costs.
  • Annual Multi-Trip: this type of multi-trip insurance policy will cover all your getaways within a specific 12-month period, making it ideal for frequent fliers. All the coverage of RACQ’s premium plan is included, plus you can choose a maximum trip length of up to 60 days.
  • Domestic: this policy provides the broadest level of cover for those sticking close to home for their holiday. This domestic travel insurance policy covers you for some COVID-19-related expenses, such as cancellation and damage to your bags or personal items. You’re also covered if you’re on a cruise and must evacuate the ship because of a medical emergency.
  • Domestic Cancellation Only: this coverage protects you for up to $1,000 per person if you’re required to alter or cancel your domestic travel plans due to unavoidable circumstances. This will cover the cost of things like cancellation fees, lost deposits and prepaid tickets.
  • Rental Car Excess Only: as the name suggests, this provides you with up to $8,000 in rental car excess cover. COVID-19 coverage doesn’t apply to either of the domestic “only” policies.

When you’re shopping around for travel insurance quotes online, it can be easy to get overwhelmed by the many options available to you. That’s why, whether you’re taking a holiday to Nepal or a trip up to Broome, it’s important to compare your options with Savvy so you can get the best deal on the market.

What optional extras are available through RACQ?

Like many other travel insurance companies, RACQ offers optional extras for both international and domestic getaways. These include:

  • Skiing and winter sports cover: for an extra cost, you can include this snow and winter sports package on your travel insurance policy to protect you when you’re carving up the snow-capped ski fields. The benefits of this policy include the renting of equipment, slope closure, avalanches and poor weather. You can also claim lost ski lift tickets or medical costs if you injure yourself while you’re carving up the slopes.
  • Choose your excess: this add-on allows you to choose how much you pay if you need to make a claim, which could potentially make the cost of your travel insurance cheaper. You would normally have to pay an excess of $250, but you can opt for less.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through RACQ?

The purpose of travel insurance may be to protect you while you’re on holiday, but policies don’t offer endless coverage. That’s why it pays to check where your policy draws the line on cover to ensure you have the right one for your trip. RACQ has a range of exclusions, including:

  • Trekking at more than 3,000 metres
  • The breakdown of a marriage, relationship, or friendship
  • Medical treatment for an unapproved pre-existing medical condition
  • Travelling for medical tourism
  • Intentionally injuring yourself
  • Ignoring the Australian government’s ‘do not travel’ warnings for a specific country
  • Travelling against the advice of doctors
  • Acts of terrorism or war

If you’ve found a policy that catches your eye, make sure you review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before you set your decision in stone.

What we think of RACQ travel insurance

What we like, $10 million personal liability cover.

RACQ offers you coverage up to $10 million if you’re found personally liable for damage of property or the injury of another person, which is almost double that of its competitors.

Competitive discounts for members

Just for being an RACQ member, you can receive a 20% discount on your travel insurance policy. This is quite competitive, given many other member organisations offer discounts of between 10% and 15%.

Ample policy options

RACQ offers up to seven different travel insurance options for international or domestic holidays which can suit travellers of most budgets.

What we don't like

Limited covid-19 coverage.

While many travel insurance providers offer COVID-19-related coverage across multiple policy levels, RACQ exclusively offers it on their premium and domestic policies.

Few optional extras

In most cases, providers offer you optional extras for motorcycle riding or adventure activities. However, RACQ only offers extra coverage for winter sports , such as skiing or snowboarding.

Acts of terrorism not covered

Some travel insurance companies will offer coverage for medical costs if your destination is struck by a terrorist attack. However, RACQ rules out cover completely for any terrorist activity.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions about RACQ travel insurance

If something goes wrong while you’re on holiday, you can make a claim 24/7 through RACQ’s website or over the phone by following a few simple steps:

  • Double-check with the PDS that your claim is covered
  • Log onto RACQ’s online portal
  • Provide ample details on your claim form
  • Gather supporting evidence about your claim, such as medical or police reports and any receipts
  • Submit your claim form. RACQ’s website says it will take up to ten working days for it to be assessed

Yes – RACQ offers limited coverage for those who are carrying a child on holiday . The travel insurance provider may accept claims of unexpected complications up to the 26th week of gestation or for childbirth due to an accident or injury. You will also be covered automatically for single, uncomplicated pregnancies. However, all other pregnancies require a medical assessment to be covered.

The cost of travel insurance is based on several factors, including:

  • Destination
  • Level of cover
  • Any optional extras you choose
  • Pre-existing medical conditions you need to disclose
  • The policy excess you choose
  • The type of insurer and insurance policy you buy

The most notable difference between multi-trip and single-trip travel insurance policies is that one covers you for multiple holidays over 12 months and the other only covers you for a single getaway. In contrast, a one-way travel insurance policy covers you for taking a single trip without a return ticket booked. You may also be able to extend a one-way policy for an extra 12 months if you pay an additional cost.

Find your perfect Outback road trip

racq travel brisbane

Choosing which road to take in an area that’s over twice the size of California (901,575km2 to be precise), can be a little overwhelming at the best of times.

Throw in niche interests like dinosaurs, endurance events and pioneering history, and the decision of which of the nine drive routes you’re going to take becomes even harder.

It pays to follow the advice of the locals, who have racked up the clicks on their odometer, with this guide to Outback Queensland’s best drive routes.

Buckle up with these road trip adventures:

1. Straight through the middle: Matilda Way

racq travel brisbane

Starts: Cunnamulla

Ends: Karumba

Distance: 1,812km

Suggested time frame: 10 days (one way)

Cutting through Outback Queensland like a hot knife through butter, the Matilda Way ventures vertical from Cunnamulla in the south to Karumba in the north.

Kick off your trip with a visit to the Cunnamulla Fella , before taking off to the star-studded town of Charleville. Check out the Cosmos Centre and Observatory , before stopping to say hi to the bilbies at the Charleville Bilby Centre.

Heading north-west, pay visits to Tambo , Blackall , and Barcaldine , before arriving into Longreach for the night. Spend a few days discovering the heart of the outback before hitting the road to Winton .

Here you’ll discover a story about a jolly swagman at the Waltzing Matilda Centre and lay your eyes on the world’s largest Australian dinosaur fossil collection at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs .

Veering further north, Cloncurry awaits, where the deserted Mary Kathleen Mine haunts some of the richest land in Outback Queensland .

Before you arrive in Karumba, be sure to stop by Normanton to snap a photo with Krys the Savannah King, a replica of the largest croc in the world (8.6m), who was caught in the area in 1957.

2. City to country: Warrego Way

racq travel brisbane

Starts: Brisbane

Ends: Birdsville

Distance: 1,578km

Suggested time frame: 12 days (one way)

Weaving from Brisbane to Birdsville , watch the city lights fade away as you make tracks west along the Warrego Way .

Your first taste of the outback is Roma , aka cattle country . Time your trip for a Tuesday or Thursday to see the largest cattle yards in the southern hemisphere in auction-action.

From Roma, take a history lesson at Charleville’s Top Secret WWII United States of America Air Forces (USAAF) tour, before heading further west.

Join the dots on the map between Quilpie , and Windorah (home to the International Yabby Races ) before visiting a town with a population of zero, Betoota .

The iconic outback town of Birdsville marks the end of Warrego Way line, but if you choose to time  your travels with the race that stops the outback , or the world’s most remote music festival you’re guaranteed to stay and play a while in this tiny outback town.

3. Outback favourites: Overlander’s Way

racq travel brisbane

Starts: Townsville

Ends:  Camooweal

Distance: 1,081km

Suggested time frame: 5 days (one way)

The clue is in the name with this track, the Overlander’s Way passes across the northern pocket of Outback Queensland, taking you from Townsville’s coast to the country, with dinosaurs, cowboys, and remote landscapes on the itinerary.

You’ll start to see red dirt from Hughenden , the town which buddies up with Richmond (next on the route) to create two-thirds of the Australian Dinosaur Trail .

From there, head west to Julia Creek , where a small town of 400 people waits for the night. That is, unless you’ve chosen to come for the second week in April when 3,000 people join the town for an annual triathlon, the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival .

Passing through Cloncurry, continue on the Overlander’s Way to arrive in cowboy country , aka Mount Isa . Home to the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere , get ready to don your Akubra and start boot scootin’.

4. A road trip that packs a punch: Adventure Way

racq travel brisbane

Ends:  Innamincka

Distance: 1,152km

Suggested time frame: 7 days (one way)

With a name like the Adventure Way , you know you’re in for a road trip of epic proportions.

You’ll know you’ve hit the right tarmac from Brisbane when you reach Cunnamulla , which has the largest population of roo’s and wallabies in Outback Queensland.

Stop for a while in Eulo , where you can take a photo with the life-size Diprotodon statue, visit the Air Raid Shelter built at Eulo during WW2 or spend some time relaxing, fishing or Birdwatching on the Paroo River.

Continue on to Thargomindah, which houses the world’s third (and Australia’s only) hydro-electricity system, embracing it after London and Paris.

Finish the road trip by crossing the border to South Australia, to the tiny town of Innamincka, with a population of just 12 people, to celebrate your journey.

5. Crosses two states: Australia’s Country Way

racq travel brisbane

Starts: Sydney

Ends:  Rockhampton

Distance: 1,615km

Shakespeare first asked ‘what’s in a name’, but Australia’s Country Way has got your answer, with this road trip taking you up the nation’s east coast – outback style.

Starting in Sydney and trailing up through Queensland, this inland route passes through Biloela in the Banana Shire , best known for its national parks and natural encounters.

From Biloela, it’s a two-hour journey to Rockhampton, the beef capital of Australia, where this road trip comes to an end.

6. A road trip that goes the length (almost) of Queensland: Great Inland Way

racq travel brisbane

Ends: Cooktown

Distance: 1,863km

Suggested time frame: 14 days (one way)

If Australia’s Country Way got you hooked on country over coast, we raise you an extra 248km across the Great Inland Way .

Starting from Sydney, your first and only taste of Outback Queensland is cattle country, otherwise known as Roma , where you can catch weekly cattle sales, tour the Big Rig at night and hit the races for the annual Easter in the Country Festival .

From Roma, continue up the coast of Queensland to the tropical north town of Cooktown, passing through Emerald, Charters Towers, and Port Douglas.

7. A fruity twist: Leichhardt Highway

racq travel brisbane

Starts: Goondiwindi

Ends:  Yeppoon

Distance: 2,019km

Suggested time frame: 3 days (one way)

Starting at the southern border of Queensland, the Leichhardt Highway goes from bush to beach.

You won’t regret a stop in the outback town of Banana , which contrary to what its name suggests wasn’t named for its abundance of the tropical fruit. The town was actually named after a local yellow coloured cow that was given the fruity nickname.

8. A road trip with a bit of bite: Australian Dinosaur Trail

racq travel brisbane

Starts: Richmond

Ends:  Winton

Distance: 330km

Suggested time frame: 4 days (one way)
