Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas, offers gorgeous white sand beaches, water sports and activities, and a variety of restaurants and bars.

The very first cruise line private island, Great Stirrup Cay is a 268-acre piece of paradise in the Berry Islands in the Bahamas. There are so many things to do on Great Stirrup Cay , whether you want an active day or just some relaxation! Here’s everything you need to know before your GSC visit.

Who owns Great Stirrup Cay?

Norwegian Cruise Line started leasing Great Stirrup Cay in 1977, to develop it into a  private island exclusively for NCL cruise ship passengers. Norwegian purchased the island outright in 1986.

You may notice some Royal Caribbean ships as you approach the island. Don’t worry, it’s not accessible to other cruise lines not owned by Norwegian! Great Stirrup Cay happens to be located adjacent to Little Stirrup Cay, home to RCC’s private island CocoCay.

Norwegian’s sister cruise lines, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas , also offer occasional itineraries that include a day at Great Stirrup Cay.

NCL’s recent renovations

As part of their Norwegian Edge program, NCL has spent about $250 million renovating and improving Great Stirrup Cay.

In addition to upgrading and enhancing the experience at the dining venues, and improving walkways and landscaping, they’ve also added more sports and adventure activities. For the ultimate in relaxation, the new luxury Silver Cove area features villas and a private lagoon.

If it’s been a few years since you’ve visited the private island, you’ll be amazed at how much it’s changed while still retaining its charm.

Is Great Stirrup Cay a tender port?

Great Stirrup Cay doesn’t yet have a pier for ships to dock at, so your ship will anchor offshore. Smaller boats, known as “tenders”, ferry passengers to and from the island.

You’ll need to pick up a complimentary ticket with a specific time to board the tender, or you can wait until Open Tender is called. Be warned that on NCL ships, Open Tender generally doesn’t start until the afternoon. By that time, many (if not all) of the restaurants and bars on the island will be closed.

Tip: Check your Freestyle Daily the day before you arrive at Great Stirrup Cay . It will list times and the location where you can pick up tender tickets. Tickets with early tender times go fast, so be sure to get your tickets as soon as possible.

Does anyone live on the island?

Norwegian has a small staff that stays on the island, but there are no permanent residents. All food for the day is sent over on tender boats with the ship’s kitchen staff in the morning.

The staff you’ll meet during the day on Great Stirrup Cay come over from the ship. Even the people working at the straw market don’t live here—they take the ferry over from nearby Great Harbour Cay .

Is the food free on Great Stirrup Cay?

Food is complimentary on Great Stirrup Cay! Currently, there are three dining options available to all guests on the island.

Jumbey Beach Grill is the largest dining venue, offering barbecue-style food in a buffet setting. Hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, and jerk chicken are popular, along with pizza, salads, and corn-on-the-cob.

Abaco Taco is a make-your-own taco bar with a variety of toppings available. Choose a beef, chicken, or fish soft taco, and load it up!

Tropic Like It’s Hot Food Truck ‘s small menu features sandwiches including Mahi Mahi and BBQ pulled pork, ceviche, and grilled spiced chicken breast. They also offer desserts: rum cake and coconut fudge bars.

Guests who book a villa or a Mandara Spa treatment on the island have access to an additional complimentary restaurant. Silver Cove Restaurant and Bar offers an upscale buffet with elevated choices such as grilled lobster tail and jumbo shrimp ceviche.

Are drinks free on Great Stirrup Cay?

There are very limited complimentary beverages available with meals: coffee and ice water. Drink charges on Great Stirrup Cay work much as they do on board the ship. If you have a beverage package for your cruise, it will work on the island as well.

If you’d like to buy drinks, you use your cruise card to make your purchases just as you do on the ship.

Bars on GSC that are open to all guests include the Patrón Bar , Bertram’s Bar , Bacardi Bar , and the Lighthouse Beach Bar .

In the exclusive Silver Cove area, there’s also the Silver Cove Bar and the Moët Bar . These are only accessible to Villa guests and those booking a treatment at the Mandara Spa.

What activities are offered at Great Stirrup Cay?

Cruisers visiting Great Stirrup Cay for the day have a range of activities to choose from, and the island offers something for every activity level and budget.

Enjoying the beach

Many visitors choose to just relax on the beach during their visit to the private island, and there’s plenty of beautiful sand for everyone! Beach access is free, and complimentary loungers are available. Most chairs aren’t shaded, so you might consider renting a clamshell to keep out of the sun.

Tip: If you don’t want to spring for a clamshell, get to the island as early as possible. There are limited loungers in a shady area under the trees, but they go fast!

Bertram’s Cove Beach , the main beach on the island, is the largest and closest to the tender dock. Since it’s so easily accessible, it’s always the most crowded beach as well. If you don’t mind being a little farther away from most amenities, keep walking and you’ll find Cabana Beach and then Fiesta Beach .

Although these smaller beaches are generally where cabana guests go, they’re also open to anyone. And they’re usually a lot less crowded!

Floating on the waves

If you’d prefer to relax ON the water, you can rent a floating mat for $16 a day. Pick them up at Mat and Float Rentals, across from Bertram’s Cove Beach. You can’t miss it—the mats are a seriously bright shade of yellow!

Snorkeling at the underwater sculpture garden

Snorkeling is a very popular activity for visitors to Great Stirrup Cay! The best snorkeling spots in Bertram’s Cove are easily accessible from the main beach. You can rent snorkel equipment for the day ($37/adult, $22/child) but we prefer to pack our own full-face snorkel masks.

The sculpture garden is located just in front of the large rock formations you’ll notice rising out of the water. If you’re not sure exactly where to go, just ask the staff at Susan’s Rock Snorkel Center .

Ziplining from the Flighthouse

One of the newest attractions at GSC is the ziplining course . Starting from the 110-foot (33.5 m) replica lighthouse, the new course features 2935 feet (895 m) of zipline!

You’ll be able to reach speeds of up to 30 mph (48 kph) while enjoying a birds-eye view of the island and the sparkling waters surrounding it.

Age and weight restrictions do apply, and cruisers need to wear closed-toe shoes to participate.

On Great Stirrup Cay you’ll have three options for ziplining: the Osprey Zipline, the Seahawk Zipline, or a combo package that lets you ride both.

Osprey Zipline ($79/$59 kids) Three easy flights: the first flight south is the tallest at 120 feet above the ground. On the second flight, you’ll soar 850 feet out to the next landing, then 900 feet out to return to the starting point.

Seahawk Zipline ($89/$69 kids) This zipline also offers three flights, but they’re a bit more challenging. You’ll take an elevator to the 110-foot platform to zip out 1429 feet to a landing near Silver Cove Lagoon.

You’ll return via a 105-foot V-net bridge, a 25-foot chimney climb, and two more long zipline rides.

Island Zipline Adventure ($119/$85 kids) A combination of the Osprey Zipline plus the Seahawk Zipline for a total of six zips plus a series of V-net bridges, chimney climbs, and cargo nets.

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP)

Stand-up paddle boarding (or SUP) is a fun way to get out on the water, and it’s a great workout, too! SUP is easy to learn, and the staff will give you pointers before sending you out to paddle around Bertram’s Cove .

Board and paddle rentals are $39 per hour, and there’s no minimum age requirement, so the whole family can join in.

Get pampered at Mandara Spa

If a soothing spa treatment is more your style, be sure to book a facial or massage at Mandara Spa in Silver Cove. Spa therapists will work their magic while you relax to the song of the ocean’s waves. Treatment rooms open to the secluded beach on the north side of the lagoon.

Guests who sign up for a spa treatment have an added perk—access to the private lagoon and Silver Cove’s restaurant and bars, normally reserved for those renting a villa.

Is there entertainment on Great Stirrup Cay?

Entertainment on the private island focuses on music and dancing, centered around the bars and the bandstand. Expect lively dancing from the ship’s entertainment staff, especially at the Bacardi Bar !

They’ll encourage guests to come up and dance with them. Even if you’re not a dancer, it’s fun to watch the high-energy staff interact with guests (who may or may not have had a couple of rum cocktails).

Live music with a Caribbean flair is played by local musicians at the bandstand directly across from the main beach at Bertram’s Cove. There’s plenty of room to dance on the sand, away from the crowds sunning on the beach.

What shore excursions can you take from Great Stirrup Cay?

Since the island is uninhabited, your only options for shore excursions are those you book through the cruise line.

Here are the Great Stirrup Cay shore excursions for 2023:

Wave Runner Tour (from $139): This 45-minute personal watercraft tour through the Berry Islands will let you see area highlights like the Lighthouse at Great Stirrup Cay, Slaughter Harbor, and the abandoned island community of Cistern Cay. The tour offers both single as well as two-person wave runners. Age and weight restrictions apply to this tour, so read carefully before booking.

Swim With the Pigs ($149/$109 kids): Yes, you can swim with pigs during your visit to Great Stirrup Cay! The pigs aren’t on GSC itself, but on nearby Treasure Island . Note that the operators of this shore excursion don’t allow guests to take their own photos (but you can purchase pictures).

Note: There are also several shore excursions from 2022 that aren’t currently offered, but may return in 2023. Prices are as of 2022, so expect about a 10-15% increase from last year’s pricing:

Kayak Tour ($59/$39 kids): Away from the crowds, you’ll join a group to paddle your two-person kayak in the waters south of Great Stirrup Cay. Tour guides provide a basic orientation on how to use your kayak.

Catamaran & Snorkel ($79/$59 kids): A double-decker, covered snorkel boat will take you to a live coral reef where you can swim with native fish and marine life. On your return, snacks and complimentary adult beverages are available.

Stingray City Bahamas ($99/$79 kids): Not to be confused with the famous Stingray City off of Grand Cayman where you can feed wild rays, this excursion takes you on a speedboat ride to Stingray City Bahamas. There, guests can interact with and feed tame stingrays in an enclosed area offshore. Snorkeling equipment is also provided.

Tip: If your Bahamas cruise also stops in Freeport, I recommend the Swim With The Pigs excursion that NCL offers there—you can take unlimited photos and video at no additional charge.

Unusual things to do on Great Stirrup Cay

If you’re looking for some out-of-the-ordinary things to do on Great Stirrup Cay , I have a couple of fun recommendations for you, especially if you enjoy history.

Walk out to the real lighthouse

You’ll no doubt see the new replica lighthouse that NCL uses for ziplining, since it’s in a very central location. But did you know there’s a real lighthouse on the island as well? This lighthouse was originally constructed in 1863 by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service.

Although the station was manned for many years, the light is currently fully-automated and solar-powered. The nearly 80-foot (24 m) lighthouse’s beam is visible for over 20 miles!

To get to the lighthouse, walk back and to the left of the tenders and look for the Lighthouse Trail. The journey is about a mile each way, and you might even spot some local wildlife, including iguanas and hummingbirds on your walk. Definitely take some closed-toe walking shoes if you want to do this short hike.

Visit the Great Stirrup Cay Cemetery

There were two early-nineteenth-century burials on the island, and you can visit the tiny cemetery with their memorials. The first burial was Captain Allan Bertram (1790-1834), the namesake of Bertram’s Cove . The British Navy captain, commander of HMS Tweed , asked to be buried here facing the beach that he loved.

In 1979, Norwegian Cruise Line installed a stone marker and plaque on the location of his grave. The tiny cemetery is located in a grassy area across from the main beach.

Also located here is the grave of Elizabeth Hixson (1813-1838), a young woman from Virginia who was traveling by sea with her husband and daughter. Elizabeth had been ill and hoped that the climate in Florida, where her brother lived, would help her condition.

She passed away during the journey, and her husband hoped to make it to Key West for burial. Winds were too calm, so they were forced to stop at the nearest island, Great Stirrup Cay. She was buried next to Captain Bertram.

Are there cabana rentals at Great Stirrup Cay?

You can rent an open-air cabana on the island, starting at $449 for a Classic Cabana that will accommodate six people. Or upgrade to a Premier Cabana with room for eight guests.

You can add up to two extra guests to either size cabana, with a $35 charge per person.

All cabanas feature a sofa and several chairs, and a small patio. The front of each structure is open to the outside, but you can draw the curtains for privacy.

Both cabana styles offer complimentary bottled water as well as up to four free-floating mats. Each group of cabanas is located close to small beaches that are often far less crowded than the main beach. Classic Cabanas are near Fiesta Beach , and Premier Cabanas are located close to Cabana Beach .

What perks are there if you rent a villa in Silver Cove?

If you’re looking for even more luxury, Great Stirrup Cay’s exclusive new Silver Cove area offers private villas for the day.

Silver Cove villa options include:

• Silver Cove Beach Villa: $649 (six guests)
• Ocean Villa $649 (six guests)
• Silver Cove 1-Bedroom Villa $799 (ten guests)
• SIlver Cove 2-Bedroom Villa $949 (16 guests)

Just like the cabanas on the island, NCL allows two extra guests over the stated capacity, with an upcharge of $35 per person for the smaller villas, and $49 per person for the one- and two-bedroom villas.

With any villa rental, you’ll also have access to the exclusive Silver Cove Restaurant and Bar , the Moët Bar , as well as the private beach at Silver Cove Lagoon (with its new overwater swings).

Each fully-furnished villa features air conditioning, private bathrooms, and a patio. Villa guests can also enjoy complimentary fresh fruit, chilled water, and a menu of on-demand movies. Room service is included if you’d prefer to dine in the villa. Villa guests also have access to complimentary floats and beach umbrellas.

Tip: If you’re thinking of visiting the Moët Bar in Silver Cove, consider upgrading your beverage package to the Premium Plus Beverage Package . Drinks at this bar start at $25, so none are covered by the Premium Beverage Package.

Are lockers available on Great Stirrup Cay?

There aren’t any lockers available on the island for passengers to secure their valuables. I recommend taking an inexpensive waterproof pouch that you can hang around your neck. You’ll be able to fit a cell phone, cash, and your license inside while you enjoy the water.

Does Great Stirrup Cay have a pool?

Currently, GSC doesn’t have a swimming pool. However, part of NCL’s improvement plan for the future includes a swimming pool complex and water features including a lazy river .

Is Wi-Fi available on Great Stirrup Cay?

GSC doesn’t offer Wi-Fi, but there is a cell tower. If you have an international plan on your phone, you should be able to access cellular data. The signal usually works on board the ship when it’s anchored offshore as well.

If you have an internet package on board the ship, you won’t be able to use it on Great Stirrup Cay. Your ship’s signal doesn’t reach the island.

How do you get around on Great Stirrup Cay?

Unlike some other cruise line private islands, GSC doesn’t have a regular shuttle or tram to transport guests around. One exception is transportation to Silver Cove, since it’s a bit of a hike from where you’ll exit your tender.

If you have a shore excursion that departs from the dock on the south side of the island, shuttles will take you to and from that location.

Thankfully, most of the action on the island is centrally located by the main beach at Bertram’s Cove. Most bars and restaurants are in this area, and restrooms are just a quick walk from the beach.

What about guests with mobility challenges?

Beach wheelchairs are available on Great Stirrup Cay, free of charge. However, you can’t pre-order a wheelchair, and the staff issues them on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you or one of your cruising group is unable to walk at all, tendering to the island might not be possible. NCL, like many other cruise lines, reserves the right to deny boarding of their tenders to guests who can’t enter or exit the boat on foot.

This is entirely for the safety of guests as well as the safety of crew members who assist people entering and exiting tenders. Keep this in mind when you ask crew members if you or your group member will be allowed to tender.

On the flip side, staying on the ship during a port day at Great Stirrup Cay can be incredibly fun. You won’t have to deal with crowds, and it could be a perfect day of relaxation when the pool deck, restaurants, and bars are almost empty. This would be a great day to book a (possibly discounted) spa treatment!

Can you buy souvenirs on Great Stirrup Cay?

Souvenirs are available at the Berried Treasures Bazaar , a straw market run by local Bahamians. The colorful open-air market offers clothing and accessories, as well as a variety of local crafts.

Since Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t run the bazaar, you won’t be able to use your cruise card here. It’s cash-only (US or Bahamian dollars) so be sure to bring cash for the market if you think you might want to do some shopping.

What do you need to bring to Great Stirrup Cay?

Your must-haves for Great Stirrup Cay are pretty basic:

• Your cruise card
• A photo ID (needs to be a valid driver’s license if you’re doing the wave runner tour)
• A towel (you can take one from the ship)

I also recommend a few extras to make your day on the island more fun and comfortable:

• Water shoes
• Tennis shoes for visiting the lighthouse or ziplining
• A hat or visor
• A reusable water bottle
• Snorkel gear
• Cash for souvenirs at the straw market

Remember when you’re packing your beach bag to double-check that you’ve packed everything you’ll need for the day. Returning to the ship and tendering back to the island likely won’t be practical.

What’s the weather like at GSC?

The Berry Islands are warm enough for swimming year-round, making Great Stirrup Cay a wonderful place to visit any time of year.

The warmest months are July and August, where highs average 91°F (33°C). January is the coldest month, with highs of 79°F (26°C).

The rainiest time of year in the Berry Islands is June through September, with the islands seeing 4-6 inches (10-16 cm) of rain per month.

Hurricane season runs from the beginning of June through the end of November. Peak hurricane period in the Bahamas lasts from early August until late October.

Ships planning to visit Great Stirrup Cay often will cancel during rough sea conditions because it’s a tender port. If you have your heart set on a day on this private island, you might want to consider booking your cruise outside of this season.

What’s changed about cruising to Great Stirrup Cay in the past few years?

When I first published this post about Great Stirrup Cay in 2020 (yup, I actually cruised to GSC in mid-February 2020 right before the world shut down) I planned to update the info about Great Stirrup Cay I had gathered for my readers about once a year.

Then I noticed that offerings (and prices!) were changing far more frequently. With that in mind, I’ve been updating this Ultimate Guide to Great Stirrup Cay about every six months.

But what have I noticed with my first 2023 update? Prices have skyrocketed. I’m seeing 10 to 15% jumps in pricing for shore excursions in just the past six months—and that’s after the usual annual increases.

But the biggest price hikes have been with the luxury experiences in Silver Cove. Early last year you could have enjoyed a Silver Cove Villa for less than half the price that you now see in 2023.

Most of this has to do with supply and demand. GSC Villas sell out early because people want that luxury experience—and there are lots of us with pandemic cruise credits looking for a way to redeem our missed vacations.

My thoughts? If a Silver Cove Villa for your family is in your budget in 2023, jump on it before prices go up again.

I love the idea of a private island. We actually just booked a cruise with NCL with a stop in GSC. We were considering getting a small cabana and splitting the cost between us and a friend who is also going. Was looking though and wondering if the studio villa would be better. What is your opinion on the cabana vs villa?

Hi Ronald, if you're on the fence about cabana vs. villa (and don't mind spending a bit more), I'd say go with the villa. It's much more private and luxurious, and you'll have the added benefit of access to the Silver Cove amenities. There are also shuttles that will take you right to Silver Cove and back. You should also get priority tendering with a villa, which is great when everyone's trying to get to the island - it can take hours to get all the passengers tendered over. Hope you have a fantastic cruise!

I never knew cruise lines could own private islands. Great tip about not having wifi outside of international cell service. Is there a community of people who lived on the island before it was purchased? I would love to learn more about life on the island for the people employed by the cruise line. Really interesting.

Great questions, Courtney! GSC was a pirate hideout (!) until the early 19th century. When I was researching the little cemetery, I learned that when Elizabeth's husband buried her on the island he met two men of African descent, assumed to be former slaves, living on the island. They helped him find the spot next to Captain Bertrand's grave. Later the island was a military installation, until it was claimed by the oil company that later leased the island to NCL.

I'd like to know more about life on the island for the employees who stay there, too! I think I'd volunteer for that job if I worked for the cruise line :D Next time I go I'll see if I can get the scoop.

20+ Tips & Things to Know for Harvest Caye, Belize — Norwegian’s Private Island

Is your cruise headed to Harvest Caye? If you’re headed on a Norwegian cruise to the western Caribbean, chances are good your ship will stop here. If so, you are in for a treat.

The cruise line’s private island is one of the nicest in the Caribbean, with a tremendous amount of things to see and do… without having to spend a fortune.

Harvest Caye sits at the southern end of Belize, about 50 miles north of the border between Guatemala and Honduras. And while it is an island, it sits only about a mile from the mainland and roughly five miles from the town of Placencia.

Norwegian Cruise Lines spent an enormous amount of time and money to transform the island into a playground for its cruise guests. Here are more details of everything to know about NCL’s Harvest Caye, including things to tips, things to know, and what to do…

As you can see, just about everything on the island is within a short walk. The main focal points on Harvest Caye is the area around the pool, LandShark Bar & Grill, and the beginning of the beach. Here you’ll find the most people while crowds get thinner the farther away from here you get.

The most distinguishable landmark on the island is the lighthouse, which towers over the landscape. The lighthouse is actually the signature of the zipline course that runs across the island. If you decide to do this adventure, you’ll get to ride from the lighthouse across the beach (see below).

Other points of interest include the city/shopping area, the wildlife reserve, and the marina.

10 Things to Do on Harvest Caye

For such a small island, there are a surprising number of things to do. As you might expect, most of the activities revolve around the pool and beach, but there is really something for everybody.

Swimming Pool (Free) Located just as you walk off the ship’s pier and in the heart of the island, there is the swimming pool. It’s a large resort-style pool with lots of bends and turns, a bridge with waterfall, swim-up bar, a gently-sloping shallow kids area, and hundreds of chairs/umbrellas for you to lounge. The pool is the heartbeat of Harvest Caye, and you’ll find the most cruise passengers spending their time here. Private pool cabanas are are available for rent for around $250, but other than that, it’s free to use.

Beach (Free) Across from the pool is a scalloped cove of the beach that runs for hundreds of feet. There are ample lounges and umbrellas, as well as shaded “clamshell” covers that you can rent for $39 for the day. Along the beach there are lifeguards posted, and there are a number of beach games like volleyball and soccer.

The closer you are to the pool (near the start of the beach), the more people you’ll find. The crowds thin as you walk down the beach. One more thing, the water isn’t the best. Visibility can be iffy, and don’t expect the electric blue color you might find elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Zipline (Paid) If there’s a signature things to do on Harvest Caye, it has to be the zipline. During our stop people were constantly soaring through the air on the course that zig-zags around the island. The most exciting run goes from the lighthouse, over the beach, and across the water. Person after person flew by on this route… all seeming to have the time of their lives. The zipline costs between $29 to $89, depending on the route you want to take and adult versus child pricing.

Paddleboarding/Kayaking (Paid) On the backside of the island is a calm area of water that features a number of bends and turns for guests to use stand-up paddleboard or kayaks. The area is roped off from the surrounding water (so you don’t have to worry about taking a wrong turn into the open water). It’s also a bit out of the way so you can feel like you’re out on your own without going far. The cost for renting a kayak or paddleboard is $29.

Ropes Course (Paid) If you have an older kid or teen, they might be interested in the ropes course. It’s basically a multi-story jungle gym. You strap in and climb around different obstacles that are dangling up to 20 feet above the ground. During our trip the zip line was a more popular choice and you could do the ropes course without any wait. It’s also affordable at only $19 per person.

Beach Villa (Paid) Sometimes you just want to relax… in style. There is a section of Harvest Caye’s beach that is roped off and available only to guests staying in the handful of private beach villas. Here you have everything you could want, including your own cabana with air conditioning, loungers, daybeds, facilities, and more. The cost is steep — $599 for up to six people. Extra persons are $49 each. Still, if you want to ensure you have your own comfortable spot away from all the other cruise passengers, this is your ticket.

Shopping If you’ve never been on a cruise, then you might be surprised at how much shopping is promoted and encouraged on the ship and on shore. Harvest Caye is no different. In the “town” section of the island there are a number of souvenir stands and shops selling everything from small trinkets to bamboo bed sheets. There is even a Harley-Davidson-branded store.

Wildlife Experience (Free) On Harvest Caye is a small “Wildlife Experience” for guests. Inside there is a butterfly exhibit, a boa constrictor, and two aviaries with a toucan and scarlet macaw. The entire area is free but only takes about five minutes to walk through. If you’re looking for a calm shady spot to sit down, it’s a great idea to get away from the buzz of the rest of the island.

Kids Splash Area (Free) If you have smaller kids, check out the splash area. With tons of contraptions spraying water in every direction, it is one of the most impressive splash pads we’ve seen. Kids are sure to get wet and have a blast without having to worry about the depth of the pool or the ocean’s waves at the beach. Best of all, it’s free to play.

Off-Island Excursions (Paid) While you could certainly spend your entire day on the island of Harvest Caye, there are a number of excursions that take you to see the other sights in Belize. Some ideas include river rafting in the jungle, tubing, Mayan ruins, and more. This is also snorkeling and glass-bottom boat tours available near the island as well. If you plan to go on an excursion, expect to spend around $100 per person.

Places to Eat & Drink in Harvest Caye

Of course, a big part of cruise life is the food. Unlike other private islands run by cruise lines, Norwegian doesn’t supply food on Harvest Caye. You’ll need to bring money and purchase anything you want to eat. You can also head back to the ship for lunch if you don’t want to pay.

LandShark Bar & Grill If you eat on the island, it’s a good chance it will be at LandShark. Sitting poolside (there is even a bar that serves you in the pool), the multi-story restaurant is right in the heart of everything. It offers all your favorite drinks, and the food is traditional American fare. There are burgers and baskets, sandwiches, salads, wings, and more. As with all food on the island, the prices are a little high (about $12-18 for an entree), and made higher by a 12.5% tax and a 15% service charge that’s tacked onto your bill.

Laughing Bird Bar & Grill Down the beach from LandShark, the Laughing Bird was another popular spot to sit and have a drink and a bite to eat. It features all your favorite beach drinks (pina coladas, margaritas, etc.) As for food, it’s tropical bar eats with some BBQ options, ceviche, burgers, nachos, and chicken baskets.

Horse Eye Jack’s The smallest bar and restaurant on the island, Horse Eye Jack’s is also the least busy in our experience. It sits near the end of the island by the private villas. Here you can sit at the bar looking out over the water or even dine with your feet in the sand. The drink menu is as you would expect with everything from soda to beer (including local brews) to rum drinks and more. The food is a mix of burgers and salads, with local snacks like plantains and ceviche.

Manatee Bar Away from most of the buzz of the pool and beach, the Manatee Bar is a large complex sitting near the marina on the other side of the island. You can find your favorites here, including Belize’s own Lighthouse Lager if you want to sample the local brew.

Tips On Visiting Harvest Caye, Belize

If it’s your first time to visit the island with Norwegian, then there are some things to know to make your trip more enjoyable.

Bring Cash and/or a Credit Card We’d suggest bring cash (U.S. dollars are accepted) and leave the credit card on the ship. Either way, just know that your shipboard account doesn’t work at restaurants and bars on Harvest Caye, so you can’t charge things to the room. Instead, you’ll pay for anything you want out of pocket, so be sure to bring some moolah to shop and eat.

The Wildlife Experience is a Great Place to Find Shade If you want to chill out for a few, there are a number of shady spots to sit for a moment around the island. That said, we found the Wildlife Experience to be the shadiest and there are several benches where you can stop and rest a while. If you are simply wanting to cool off and get out of the sun, there’s no better spot.

Take a Picture With the Belize Sign Located near the marina, the “Belize” sign was installed for an Instagram-worthy spot to take a vacation photo. It’s one of the best spots on Harvest Caye to grab a souvenir snapshot, and it’s also free. We suggest checking it out after a couple of hours on the island. The line to grab a photo was 20 people deep when we first arrived.

Stake Out a Spot by the Pool Early If you know you want to hang out by the pool, then we suggest staking out your spot early in the day (when you first arrive). The pool is by far the most popular spot and when we arrived around lunch time every lounger was already claimed, despite us being on a smaller Norwegian ship. Get there early if you want a spot to set your stuff.

The Pool Isn’t Heated The pool is large and inviting, but just know that it’s not heated. If you visit during the winter months, it will still be warm enough to swim, but it might be a little bit of a shock when you first get in. As well, the ocean water can be chilly as well. It’s still better than trying to stay warm back home!

Lockers Are For Rent Around the island you’ll see several locker stands that have a couple of dozen spots for people to rent. The cost is $5 and you can actually put it on your ship’s card (no cash is accepted). For the price you get the use of the locker all day and are given a key to let you access it when you need to do so.

Rides Are Available Up and Down the Pier To get to Harvest Caye, there’s a lengthy walk from the ship down a long pier. If you have mobility issues, don’t fret. There are carts that run the length of the pier, picking up and dropping off passengers between the ship and the shore. If you walk the pier, just be sure you stay on your side of the walkway to let the carts pass.

There is a 12.5% Tax and 15% Service Charge at Restaurants As we mentioned above, food and drink on Harvest Caye is pricey. List prices for most beers are between $6-7. A burger and fries can cost $13-15. On top of that, however, is an additional 12.5% tax and then another 15% for a service charge (in place of a tip). In other words, a $10 cocktail on the menu will actually cost you $12.75 all told.

Go Down the Beach for Smaller Crowds The area around the pool and the head of the beach can get busy both in people and noise (music by the pool is usually playing). If you want to go somewhere quieter — or just want a beachfront lounger — then just walk down the beach a little bit. Crowds quickly thin and you can find a spot all your own beneath a palm tree.

There’s No Wi-Fi (That We Found) We went in search of wi-fi around the island to see if there were any free services to allow passengers to connect. Searching the pool and area near the LandShark Bar & Grill (the most popular area on the island), we weren’t about to find any open connections. If you planned to connect while in port, you might be out of luck.

Coke is Served on Harvest Caye It may sound silly, but loyal Coca-Cola drinkers don’t want Pepsi and vice versa. Pepsi products are served on Norwegian , and if you’re a Coke drinker you are out of luck. But on Harvest Caye, Coca-Cola is served in the restaurants. If you’re a Coke lover, it’s an oasis in a desert of Pepsi. One note — you can’t bring the drinks back on board with you, so get your fill while on the island.

You didn’t mention that you can purchase a ferry ticket to get away from the crowds and go to placencia. They have amazing All inclusive resorts there for cruisers

Is it possible to snorkel from the beach? Or must one take an excursion?

You can snorkel at the beach. You might need to rent some gear, or just bring your own mask and snorkel.

This private Bahamian island is owned by and operated exclusively by Disney Cruise Line. It opened in 1998 after a $25 million renovation of Gorda Cay, previously an airstrip for bootleggers and drug runners.

Designed with a “castaway” theme, the island features food service, shops, three separate beaches (including an adults-only option), water sports, shore excursions, and even its own 5K race. Guests are able to use their room keys to charge on the island, and Disney even offers onshore child care.

Castaway Cay was the first cruise line private island to skip the tender ride since Disney dredged the harbor and built a pier.

Before you leave, don’t forget to stop by the post office to mail a letter back home. The postmark is exclusive to the island and mentions Castaway Cay.

2. Half Moon Cay

• Cruise Lines: Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line
• Dock or Tender: Tender

Officially owned by Holland America Line, this 2,400-acre island paradise is used primarily by Holland America and Carnival ships. The name Half Moon Cay comes from the island’s 2.5-mile-long crescent-shaped beach.

Half Moon Cay is a tender port, but many of the amenities and offerings make up for that inconvenience. Free BBQ for lunch, horseback riding on the beach, a kid’s water park area, and a chance to swim with stingrays are all on offer.

The island typically ranks second among private island destinations, only beaten by Castaway Cay.

3. Perfect Day at CocoCay

• Cruise Line: Royal Caribbean

Originally envisioned as a private island destination by Admiral Cruises in the late 1980s, CocoCay opened to Royal Caribbean passengers in 1990 after the line acquired Admiral.

While always a popular tender port in the Bahamas, a day at CocoCay became perfect after a $250 million rehab that included the addition of a water park, pier, multiple pools, and more.

Perfect Day at CocoCay, the awkward name the island assumed after the renovations, is on par with Castaway Cay as a cruise draw for families.

The Thrill Waterpark (book early) carries an extra admission charge but features 13 water slides, including the largest in North America and the largest wave pool in the Bahamas.

However, a water park ticket isn’t necessary to enjoy most of what the 140-acre island has to offer, including multiple beaches, a freshwater pool, and beach-side sports, including volleyball, basketball, and more.

There isn’t an adults-only area here, but the extra-charge Coco Beach Club, with an infinity pool and sit-down restaurant, is likely to attract fewer kids than the rest of the island.

4. Great Stirrup Cay

• Cruise Line: Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

The first private cruise line island destination, Great Stirrup Cay, opened to Norwegian Cruise Line guests in 1977. Once a hideout for pirates, Great Stirrup Cay is now a haven for sun-seekers thanks to its expansive beaches.

For those looking to be more active, parasailing, snorkeling, kayaking, and even driving a wave runner are all options here. Similar to other private islands, you’ll get an island BBQ and the ability to purchase frosty drinks while sitting in your complimentary lounge chair.

Kids will love this stop, as the island features the world’s largest inflatable water slide, the Hippo, which stands 40 feet high and 175 feet long .

In the early days of the island, cruisers were brought ashore by tenders that landed on the beach, Normandy Invasion-style, but as part of upgrades in 2017, Norwegian Cruise Line built a harbor with tender docks, making for a much smoother arrival experience.

5. Princess Cays

• Location: Private destination on Eleuthera
• Cruise Lines: Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line

While not a stand-alone private island, Princess Cays rests on the southern tip of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, and most cruisers would never realize they’re on a larger strip of land. Owned, as the name suggests, by Princess Cruises, Princess Cays is also a destination for Carnival Cruise Line.

Home to the standard amenities – several beaches, including a private adults-only area, water sports, a pool for kids, multiple bars, and wildlife excursions, it’s easy and relaxing to spend a day here.

Check out the private cabana rentals for a bit of extra privacy and service. Princess Cays is a tender port, but the operation runs smoothly for the short ride from and to your ship.

• Cruise Line: Royal Caribbean, Azamara Club Cruises

The second of Royal Caribbean Group’s private destinations, Labadee is located in a lush, green forest on the northern coast of Haiti.

Opened in 1986, Labadee has changed a bit since those days – including a $55 million upgrade in 2009. No tender is necessary here, even for Oasis-class ships, thanks to upgrades to the pier.

An all-you-can-eat BBQ lunch is included in your visit to this port. As for the rest of the day, this is the port where you’ll want to plan water activities – including snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing, kayaking, and more.

But, the island’s biggest claim to fame is the Dragon’s Breath Flight Line: The world’s longest zip-cable over water.

Further inland is the Dragon Coaster, a twisting and turning alpine slide. While it’s necessary to leave the secured, private area to access these attractions, you’re well looked after by Royal Caribbean staff.

7. Harvest Caye

• Location: Private Island in Belize
• Cruise Line: Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Oceania Cruises

Harvest Caye welcomed its first guests in late 2016. Located just a mile off the coast of Belize, this private island offers Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings passengers a seven-acre beach, a 15,000 square-foot swimming pool, poolside cabanas, water activities in the private lagoon, shopping, and dining.

There are a number of nature and wildlife-focused activities on the island, making this a great stop for nature lovers.

At the saltwater lagoon, kayaking and paddleboarding will keep you busy for the afternoon. Belize’s Great Barrier Reef surrounding the island makes for a first-class snorkeling and coral viewing experience.

If you want to explore further into Belize, an excursion to the Mayan archeological site of Nim Li Punit is the perfect opportunity.

8. Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve

• Cruise Line: MSC Cruises

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve welcomed its first guests in December 2019. Located in the Bahamas, the private island destination is a stop on most of MSC Cruises’ Caribbean itineraries.

Built as an industrial island and used primarily as an industrial scrapyard and sand excavation site in the 1960s and 1970s, MSC purchased the island in 2015 and has invested $200 million in creating a tropical paradise.

The island offers an environmentally-focused experience, with the waters surrounding the cay serving as a protected space for coral and marine life to flourish.

Cruisers can enjoy eight beaches, a spa, nighttime Junkanoo parades and light shows, a zip line from the picturesque lighthouse, multiple bars, and several dining experiences — including food trucks. The island’s shade canopy is still growing , so be sure to pack your sunscreen when going ashore.

9. The Beach Club at Bimini

• Location: Private destination on Bimini in the Bahamas
• Cruise Line: Virgin Voyages
• Dock or Tender: Dock, with a “short transfer” to The Beach Club

The Beach Club at Bimini has been developed in conjunction with Resorts World Bimini.

Previously set to debut when Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady made her inaugural sailing to the Bahamas in 2021, The Beach Club actually opened to other cruise ships before Virgin Voyages arrived. This is because Scarlet Lady was redeployed to the UK and debuted in the summer of 2021 there instead of from Miami.

Currently, other cruise passengers have been able to take excursions to The Beach Club, including those from Carnival. It is not known whether other lines will still be able to use the facilities once Virgin Voyages begins sailing in the Bahamas or if other lines will even continue to visit Bimini.

We do know that when a Virgin Voyages ship is in port, those passengers will have exclusive use of the facilities. On days when a ship is not scheduled to call, Resorts World guests will be able to access the club.

The Club promises sailors an adults-only beach, scuba diving, snorkeling, dolphin swims, and a hip, DJ-driven pool party that will be the place to see and be seen.

Each evening (at least on days when Virgin passengers are using it), a beachfront bonfire will cap off the ship’s visit to the port on the Bahamian island of Bimini.

A guide to cruise line private islands: What they are and what you can expect

What is a private island? Perhaps you're having visions of relaxing on a secluded beach, cocktail in hand, without another person in sight. That might be true in some cases. But, when you're on a cruise, private islands are only private in the sense that they're exclusive to passengers on ships that call there.

If you're looking at a Caribbean or Bahamas itinerary and see a listing for an unfamiliar port — such as Great Stirrup Cay, Half Moon Cay or Perfect Day at CocoCay — it could be a cruise-line-owned or -operated private island.

Most major cruise lines either have their own private islands or share one with other brands under the same corporate umbrella. (The only one that doesn't is Celebrity Cruises .) Some of the islands are owned by the lines that visit them, while others are leased by the lines from the countries that own them.

The main function of these oases, most of which are located in the Bahamas, is to provide cruisers with a relaxing and exclusive experience that's clean, contained and carefully quality-controlled.

If you're looking for more information about the private island experience, as well as a list of these private islands, which lines operate them and what you can expect when you call there, you've come to the right place.

Pros and cons of cruise line private islands

If you love a good beach day, you'll likely be a fan of cruise line private islands. In most cases, the beach (or beaches) is the central attraction of the private island. Most activities center on sunning and swimming, water sports or other outdoor pursuits.

All cruise line private islands feature alfresco bars, souvenir shops and beach equipment rentals. Some islands also offer amusements like zip lines and water parks, kiddie play areas and rental cabanas of varying levels of luxury. Available shore excursions may include options like swimming with stingrays, jet ski rides and snorkeling.

Lunch is included on almost all private islands, usually in the form of a barbecue buffet. For purchases, most islands accept cruise cards as payment, which will add charges for things like alcohol to your onboard account (so you don't need to bring cash).

Bathrooms and outdoor showers for washing off sand are conveniently located.

But don't set your standards too high for your private island escape. The islands are small and can get crowded. That's especially true if you're on a megaship or if there are multiple ships calling on the same day. If you can't hack it in the sun all day, there isn't as much else to do compared to calling on a port that's open to the public.

Although the somewhat sheltered vibe is nice when you just want a day at the beach, it also means your time ashore is likely to be devoid of cultural immersion. Excursions and souvenirs are limited. If you prefer to visit populated islands and engage with the people who live there, a private island may feel like a wasted port day on your itinerary.

Also, while more than half of the industry's private islands have docks, the rest require ships to anchor nearby and shuttle passengers back and forth from ship to shore. Be prepared for queues if you want to get off the ship right away; the lengthy process can detract from the time you're able to spend enjoying the port. Tender boats are not always accessible to travelers with mobility difficulties.

Private islands are a cruise fan favorite and are stops on the majority of Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries. Set your expectations correctly and you're sure to have a relaxing day on the beach.

Castaway Cay (Disney Cruise Line)

This private island, owned by Disney Cruise Line , spans about 1,000 acres in the Bahamas. On a visit there, passengers can take a free tram from the dock to one of three stops that provide access to the kids area, family beach, waterslides and the adults-only area. Castaway Cay is also walkable.

Cruisers can choose to go back on board to have lunch, or they can snag a free barbecue meal at one of two buffets on shore.

Shore excursions are available, including paddleboating and personal watercraft tours. Rentals are also available for snorkeling gear, water floats and bicycles. If you're an active traveler, try biking the loop to the island's lookout point or signing up for the Castaway Cay 5K run; every participant earns a medal.

Great Stirrup Cay (Norwegian Cruise Line)

Great Stirrup Cay, which is owned and operated by NCL , is a tender port that stretches across 250 acres in the Bahamas, about 140 miles east of Miami.

It offers plenty of beach areas with loungers, including a family beach area, as well as private beach villas for cruisers booked in Norwegian's The Haven. There's also a zip line.

The island's free buffets offer a selection of food at lunchtime, including hot dogs and hamburgers, pizza, fruit and desserts, as well as drinks.

Half Moon Cay (Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line)

Half Moon Cay — located in the Bahamas, about 100 miles southeast of Nassau — is owned by Carnival Corporation and plays host to both Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America ships.

Although offerings are similar, there are some nuances depending on which line is in port on a given day. For example, when Holland America is anchored, drink packages are available on shore, private cabana and villa rentals are more expensive, and passengers can opt for a seafood lunch from The Lobster Shack. (The island is a tender port that can accommodate up to two ships at a time, but there will never be a day when one is a Holland America ship and one is Carnival.)

Water sports rentals and shore excursions such as horseback riding, snorkeling and biking/hiking tours are available for booking. For anyone wanting a lazy beach day, Half Moon Cay boasts 2.5 miles of white sand for lounging and sunbathing. There are also children's areas for the kids to splash and play.

Harvest Caye (Norwegian Cruise Line)

Harvest Caye, Norwegian's second private island, opened in 2016, providing a plethora of outdoor activities for visitors.

Found just a few miles offshore from Placencia, Belize, the 75-acre property offers both a beach with loungers and private villas, and a lagoon pool with a swim-up bar, lounge chairs and private cabanas. The island also features shops selling local wares, a zip line, a lighthouse that you can climb, a kids splash park and a wildlife sanctuary that includes birds, butterflies and snakes. Shore excursions include options like parasailing and kayaking.

Unlike most other private islands, Harvest Caye doesn't offer any free food options on shore. Passengers will find an outpost of Jimmy Buffett-affiliated LandShark Bar & Grill, but all the food and drinks come with a fee, and you can't pay with your cruise card. Anyone not wishing to spend the extra cash can head back to the ship for a meal.

Ocean Cay Marine Reserve (MSC Cruises)

MSC Cruises gave Ocean Cay Marine Reserve a total makeover after it purchased the island from the Bahamian government. What, for years, had been a manmade industrial wasteland about 20 miles south of Bimini is now an island teeming with new plant life and clean beaches. That includes two beach areas for families, complete with shallow water and a floating submarine attraction.

Even with all the construction, the space still feels natural and untouched -- a far cry from some of the more gimmicky private islands operated by other cruise lines.

Ocean Cay is outfitted with a dock, which eliminates the need for tendering. Shore excursions are available, and free eats are served at the island's food court buffet. If you'd like to branch out a bit, try something from one of the multiple food trucks or the Lighthouse Bar (for an extra fee).

On sailings where the ship stays late into the night, you won't want to miss the lighthouse light show and beach party. Trust me when I say it's the highlight of a call there.

Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean)

Royal Caribbean 's Perfect Day at CocoCay (formerly just CocoCay) in the Bahamas recently underwent a massive expansion that added several free eateries, bars for added-fee drinks, exclusive villa and beach club areas, and stands selling souvenirs and treats like funnel cakes.

In addition to the beaches that are open to all passengers, the cruise line private island boasts a massive water park that's ideal for families, complete with a wave pool and several waterslides — including the tallest one in North America.

A tram will take you wherever you'd like to go on the massive 125-acre island, which now features a dock so tendering is no longer required. Despite the enviable vistas afforded by the multiple beaches and pools, some of the best views can be had from a ride on a tethered helium balloon that will take you 450 feet up in the air.

Princess Cays (Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise line)

The tender island of Princess Cays, found on Eleuthera in the Bahamas (about 70 miles from Nassau), covers 40 acres. It's operated mainly by Princess Cruises — hence, the name — but Carnival Cruise Line (which shares the Carnival Corp. parent company with Princess) also calls there.

In addition to a half-mile of sandy beaches with loungers and umbrellas, cruisers can enjoy private clamshells and bungalows for rent, as well as a free beach barbecue. Walkways make it easy for visitors to meander from one area to another, and excursions abound, including stingray encounters, banana boat rides and fishing, among other pursuits.

The destination also houses a selection of shops, water sports rentals and bars for enjoying a cold adult beverage or two. If you'd like to drink those beverages in peace, you can drop your children in at the small, supervised kids club area, which offers a playground and a wading pool.

Other tailored shoreside cruise experiences

Private islands aren't the only ways cruise lines offer curated experiences to their passengers on shore. Several brands have developed private areas within larger destinations.

For example, Virgin Voyages developed the Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas in partnership with Resorts World. When a Virgin ship is docked, its passengers have exclusive use of the Beach Club. Passengers who visit with other cruise lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship isn't in port.

Royal Caribbean exclusively uses Labadee, a beach area in Haiti, as a private location reserved for its passengers only. Because Labadee occupies only part of an inhabited island, access to the island is not exclusive to Royal Caribbean passengers, but access to the Labadee area is.

Although MSC Cruises initially spruced up Abu Dhabi's Sir Bani Yas area, it is also used by other cruise lines. The same goes for Taino Bay in the Dominican Republic, which is the latest private area developed for cruise passengers.

Purpose-built ports are another way lines provide cruisers with a homogenized experience that extends from ship to shore.

Ports developed by cruise lines specifically for their own use include Icy Strait Point, which was built in partnership between Norwegian Cruise Line and the Hoonah Totem Corporation in Alaska; Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, Mahogany Bay in Roatan and Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos, all developed by Carnival; and Falmouth, Jamaica, which was originally built to accommodate Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class vessels but which is now used by several lines.

Like private islands or private areas on islands, these stops offer clean bathrooms, shore excursions, shopping, dining and other activities for a fee. What sets them apart is that they're much smaller. They're developed with a plethora of things to do and purchase right in the immediate terminal area, encouraging passengers to stick close to the ship as opposed to venturing out to a nearby beach or resort.

FIRST TIME: How to Make the Most of Your First Cruise Vacation

The main attraction at the Splashaway Bay water parks on Royal Caribbean ships are the colorful water slides, the number of which vary by cruise ship. Generally, you’ll find one or two larger slides for kids ages six and older (minimum height is 42 inches) and one small slide for the toddlers. For the big slide, the maximum weight is 300 pounds. There’s also a splash zone with ankle-high pools of water and an array of other water features (think water cannons, whirlpools, and a drench bucket) to get kids wet and laughing. 

For bigger thrills, look to the Category 6 water park on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas . At 17,000 square feet, this is the biggest cruise ship water park in the world, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. One of the largest water parks for young kids at sea, the Forest Aquaventure Park and AquaPlay area on MSC Cruises offer a full range of amusements for kids, tweens, teens, and water slide-loving adults. There are four slides, including two racing slides with clear sections that extend out over the side of the ship; an easy, open air spiral slide; and a funky slideboard option with neon lighting.

For the smaller kids under 10, there’s a large shallow pool with fountains to play under, mini slides to give the kiddos a thrill, spray nozzles for getting mom and dad wet, and a giant tipping bucket. Above it all is an enclosed suspension bridge that might look scary and like a challenge to some of the younger kids, but is as safe as can be. 

MSC’s Polar AquaPark, found on MSC Meraviglia and MSC Bellissima , isn’t nearly as toddler-friendly as Forest Aquaventure, which is a good thing for families with older kids and tweens. And the MSC World Europa has an impressive VR-enhanced water park called the Aurora Borealis AquaPark , which is geared more toward teens and adults than little kids. Limited to the eight and under set, the 1,500-square-foot Nemo’s Reef on Disney Cruise Line ships is filled with Finding Nemo characters, countless fountains, pop jets, and spray nozzles. There’s also a toddler-sized water slide with a slip-n-slide feel that will have young kids going back again and again. And, unlike on most other cruise ships, toddlers in swim diapers are welcome to play here.

For the tweens and kids eight years old and up, the AquaDuck water coaster stretches more than 750 feet, and a parent can ride together with their child on a two-person raft that goes up and down and out over the side of the ship. 

In fact, each of Disney’s cruise ships has at least one water play area for younger kids. You’ll find a sprawling water playground called AquaLab themed around Donald Duck’s mischievous nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie on the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, and Disney Fantasy. All of Norwegian Cruise Line ‘s Breakaway, Breakaway-Plus, and Prima class ships have a Kids’ Aqua Park play area.

The water parks for kids on Norwegian Escape , Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Joy , and Norwegian Encore have the most to offer, including a large tipping bucket, mesh climbing structures, water cannons you can aim from above, and an exciting kid-sized slide. The water parks for young kids on Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway are less impressive, with just a wading pool, two very tiny slides, and a handful of splash elements. The same can be said for the kids water play area on the Norwegian Prima .

Which Cruise Lines Have Private Island Water Parks?

Several of the most family-friendly cruise lines have their own private islands where you’ll find water parks and splash areas of varying complexity.

Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay is a massive water-themed playground of an island sure to dazzle both adults and kids. Among the offerings: Thrill Waterpark with its two towers and 13 slides, plus the Caribbean’s largest wave pool and an obstacle course pool. Perfect Day at CocoCay is also home to the Caribbean’s largest freshwater pool, Oasis Lagoon, which has coves, a swim-up bar, private cabanas, swim-up islands with in-water loungers, and a kid-friendly beach entry.

Disney’s Castaway Cay has plenty of water fun to offer as well. You can snorkel, swim with stingrays, zip down water slides in the water park area, and even run a 5K.

Both Carnival and Holland America visit the 2,400-acre Half Moon Cay in The Bahamas. As with Perfect Day at CocoCay and Castaway Cay, there’s a kid’s water park area here as well. Families can also go horseback riding on the beach and swing with stingrays. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay private island does not have a water park.

Note that not all sailings from these lines stop at their private islands, so if this experience is of interest, be sure to check the itinerary before booking.
