The  National Institute of Design (NID) is internationally acclaimed as one of the finest educational and research institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile, and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design. Established in 1961, NID has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s design landscape.

The establishment of the National Institute of Design (NID) was influenced by various global and local forces. The late 1950s marked a pivotal period for Indian culture and education. As a newly independent nation, India faced the immense challenge of nation-building, striving to balance its ancient traditions with modern technology and ideas. During this time, the Modern Movement, the  philosophy of Machine Aesthetics, and groundbreaking experimentation in the arts, architecture, and design were all in full swing. There was a widespread quest for a distinct Indian identity in every facet of life.

In 1955, Pupul Jayakar, a prominent writer on Indian craft traditions and the founder of the Indian Handlooms and Handicrafts Export Council (HHEC), met the renowned American designer Charles Eames at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Museum had organized an exhibition titled “The Textiles and Ornamental Arts of India,” which sparked a lifelong dialogue between these two influential figures.

Simultaneously, the Government of India was contemplating the establishment of a design institute, guided by the advice of Pupul Jayakar and other like-minded individuals. The 1950s, a decade of rapid industrialization in India, amplified the necessity for such an institute. In 1957, the Government of India requested the Ford Foundation to invite Charles and Ray Eames to visit India. During their visit, Charles and Ray Eames traveled extensively across the country, engaging with writers, craftspeople, architects, scientists, industrialists, educators, and philosophers. They documented their journey with hundreds of photographs, capturing the diverse essence of India.

The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, offers various undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses. The following are some of the courses offered by NID Ahmedabad   as per the National Institute of Design Ahmedabad prospectus: 

Bachelor of Design (B.Des.): A solid foundation in design thinking and problem-solving is intended to be provided by this four-year undergraduate course.

How to apply for National Institute of Design Ahmedabad?

NID Ahmedabad Admission Process 

Admission to National Institute of Design Ahmedabad is extremely challenging and is based on a tough selection process. The NID Entrance Test  is a national-level entrance exam determining NID admission. The NID DAT is conducted by NID every year in June .  

To get admitted, interested applicants must complete the following steps: 

• NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT) : All candidates must appear for the DAT, which evaluates their aptitude for design, creativity, visualization skills, and problem-solving abilities. The DAT consists of both written and practical tests. 
• Studio Test and Interview: Shortlisted candidates from the DAT are invited to appear for the Studio Test and Interview round. This stage assesses the candidate's hands-on design skills, conceptual thinking, and ability to articulate their ideas. 
• Portfolio Review: Applicants must submit their portfolio, demonstrating their best work and creative abilities. The portfolio reflects the applicant’s design sensibilities and helps the selection committee evaluate their potential. 
• Final Merit List: Based on the performance in the DAT, studio Test, personal interview, and portfolio review, a final merit list is prepared. Passed applicants are offered admission to their preferred program based on their rank in the merit list.

• Step 2: Click on the NID registration link available on the home page. 
• Step 3: Register with the basic details to generate login credentials.

Candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered for admission to the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad:  

Bachelor of Design (B.Des.)  

• Must have passed or sat in their 10+2 (or equivalent) examination from any recognised board in India or overseas.  
• The age restriction for general category candidates is 20 years, while for reserved category candidates, it is 23 years .  

Master of Design (M.Des.)  

• Must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in design, engineering, architecture, or a related discipline from a recognised university/institute.  
• There is no upper age limit for M.Des admissions.

NID Ahmedabad Cut Off 

National Institute of Design Ahmedabad seats are limited in number and the NID Ahmendabad cutoff varies from year to year and stream to stream. The NET cutoff is often 100 marks, though. The institution's suggested NID DAT cutoff depends on the results each applicant received in their prior tests. The DAT exam serves as the primary basis for the NID DAT cutoff .  

• Mainly based on the DAT score. 
• G.D. and P.I. scores. 
• Cut-off is also effective for students from abroad.

Placements at NID Ahmedabad 

The NID has a very strong placement track record. According to media estimates, during the NID Ahmedabad placements , the average package was INR 21.30 LPA (approx.) . A total of 400 job offers were provided to the students by the 124 participating recruiters.  

During the National Institute of Design Ahmedabad 2024 placement drive, Microsoft offered jobs to around 30 students.

Craft traditions in India continue to reflect diverse regional and socio-cultural profiles of the country. Frequently, craft traditions communicate important cultural concepts and function beyond their basic role of ornamentation and cultural expression.

Traditionally, crafts were produced and managed by the craftsmen themselves. However, “Globalisation” demands innovative products, materials, and processes with new standards of quality and creativity. Today, due to changes in social set ups, culture and economy, the crafts and the crafts persons are increasingly becoming vulnerable to new realities. Strengths of Indian handicrafts is increasingly being recognised both in export as well as domestic urban markets, but the qualitative market intelligence flow between market-place and the crafts persons is not up to the desired level. Besides, quality of production, approaches for further market development, protection of traditional wisdom and practices through IPR, sustainability, crafts promotion, etc. are the other aspects that need to be addressed for effective growth of Indian handicrafts. Design plays a major role in empowering the crafts and crafts persons, both as an enabler and a value adder. Only knowledge empowerment and efficient multi- disciplinary networking can lead to cutting edge advantage to Indian crafts. Attributes of Indian handicrafts have a great potential to contribute in this direction if hand held properly.

International Centre for Indian Crafts (ICIC) is set up with the primary aim to effectively understand the needs, strengths and weaknesses of a particular crafts sector and apply NID's interdisciplinary design expertise and knowledge base for capacity building and skill up gradation of artisans with a Global - Local approach. The unique approach is to develop a national and international network for Crafts Design Research, Training and Knowledge Dissemination for providing collaborative and sustainable linkages to the Indian crafts sector.

Having its own design outlet was a long cherished dream of all those associated with NID, though, it took some time for this dream to come true. Inaugurated on January 26, 2005, this design outlet named “nidus” is a celebration of good design on the one hand and an attempt to make well designed products available to people on the other. The collection ranges from ceramic to lifestyle and accessory (jewellery and leather accessories, hand bags made of natural fibers), textile and apparel (including stoles, T-shirts, home furnishing etc.) products made of stainless steel, design publications etc All the products showcased and retailed through this outlet are designed by NID alumni, students and faculty members. Shimul Mehta Vyas, Project Head, Nidus, along with other faculty colleagues, Jitendra Arora, Nilima Hasija and Rupesh Vyas spent days and nights for months together to make “nidus” a swanky outlet of the objects of desire. According to Shimul Mehta, “We would be trying to move the shelves once every fortnight as we have enough viable design ideas generated in the classroom. Nidus in the last six months has become a 'must visit' destination for the design connoisseurs from all over the country. This bright spot situated near the main entrance of NID campus is attracting large number of buyers and design lovers who want to check out the latest design offerings from the fountainhead of creativity. Through nidus, NID is making design accessories and other products accessible to as many consumers as possible at a price which is not too hard to the pocket. It's being run by NID Employees Credit and Consumer Co-operative Society.

NID strives to encourage, creativity and innovation, which in turn leads to generation of intellectual property. Protection of Intellectual Property (IP) so generated is necessary to provide security, stimulation and incentives for sustained and enhanced output. Moreover, in the context of ever shortening product lifecycles and product differentiation and a market driven by vagaries, it is becoming more and more essential to manage Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) effectively.

In 1999 the IPR Cell was first established as an entity with a clear mandate of facilitating and guiding students and others in the various aspects and issues in the field of IPR. The IPR cell at NID has organized many workshops, sensitization programmes, seminars, besides getting IP registrations done. The IPR Cell at NID is constantly striving towards strengthening linkages with likeminded organizations to leverage its registered designs further. NID has been one of the few Educational Institutions in the country to formulate IPR guidelines.

Infrastructure : When you enter the classrooms,It will have a lot of space in it and the college provide space to put your laptops and books on.Overall,You will never feel like not studying after going there.

Hostel : In the hostels,on the front gate there is a security guard welcoming you and the hostels has 3-5 floors. The rooms are also really comfortable to Live and you will have three beds with one for you and two for your roommates

Infrastructure

Infrastructure : There are really big classrooms and Auditorium . There is also library facilities with good range of knowledge resourcesand 'Food-Court are available with good food and clean environment. Medical facilities, pharmacy, ambulance are also available in campus.

Hostel : This hostel is really fantastic; the staff is pleasant and helpful. The hostels are very well maintained and organized, with clean rooms and bathrooms, and the staff is excellent, which contributes to the hostel's secure environment.

Infrastructure : he entire campus has been beautifully designed with sequential unfolding of spaces. The proportion of built and unbuilt flow beautifully into each other. There are no strict path to a place, every person decides their own trail.

Hostel : The institute provides hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Moreover, the institute’s hostels in Gandhinagar accommodate approximately 450 and 200 students respectively. The meals which they provides is very tasty.

Infrastructure : By and large, academic buildings and libraries are usually decent, but accommodations ranges considerably. A lot of dorms can be considered broken-down unless you choose to pay premium rates.

Hostel : If you don’t want to be living in the most basic dorms, be ready for the new housing and bare-bone amenities. Dining room food gets also very monotonous and unsatisfying surprisingly fast.

Infrastructure : Power colleagues infrastructure facility and equipment are excellent. We also have technical workshops And well Maintained labs for practical We are student can implement their own ideas with the help of friendly faculty

Hostel : National Institute of design is known for its hostels Atmosphere of the hostel is peaceful Here you can feel peace of mind without any disturbance. The rules are very strict of our hostel

Infrastructure : Fortunately, classroom buildings and libraries are relatively modern and up-to-date; but, the place I really struggle with is housing. With living amidst all these outdated dorms along with dealing with the surging parking hassles.

Hostel : I guess only those who are ready to endure the crappy life of a college amidst cramped and barebones dorms with very few amenities will get the chance to study in either of the two schools, maybe if they are lucky enough to be able to afford paid housing.

Infrastructure : The building is modern and beautiful. They have designing rooms and screens . They provide sitting arrangement outside the campus also for waiting of parents.

Hostel : Hostel building is very beautifully painted. The hostel staff is very polite including cook warden, security guards etc. They have fresh water supply.

Infrastructure : The infrastructure of this institute is good. There is smart classes available. There is library well organised. There is cafeteria with good food. There is activity center .

Hostel : The hostel of this institute is good. The food of this hostel is not bad. The room of the hostel has required facility available. The staff of this hostel is helpful.

Infrastructure : The college­ has modern facilities, including well-maintaine­d classrooms, advanced laboratories, and a comprehe­nsive library. The campus is also equippe­d with reliable Wi-Fi, making it convenie­nt for students

Hostel : The hostel facilities are­ comfortable, with clean rooms and hygienic food. The­ atmosphere is friendly, and the­re are additional amenitie­s available for the students.

Infrastructure : Okay let’s talk about the campus. This place is quite big and wide with a blend of old and modern structures. Most classrooms are okay although there are some which could do well with renovations. The library serves as an awesome chill-out area where one can study because it contains many books and comfortable seats to relax on. And Wi-Fi? Well, we’ll just say sometimes yes others no.

Hostel : Staying at a hostel feels like living in a small world within this world itself. Hostel are the second home to us and will be for you too for sure. You can live here for sure.

The National Institute of Design (NID) is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education and research. The Business Week, USA has listed NID as one of the top 25 European & Asian programmes in the world. The institute functions as an autonomous body under the department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. NID has been declared ‘Institution of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the National Institute of Design Act 2014.

NID is recognised by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) under Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation.

NID has been a pioneer in industrial design education after Bauhaus and Ulm in Germany and is known for its pursuit of design excellence to make Designed in India, Made for the World a reality. NID's graduates have made a mark in key sectors of commerce, industry and social development by taking role of catalysts and through thought leadership.

As part of extension plan, NID has three campuses located in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. NID Ahmedabad Campus is situated in Ahmedabad city, in Gujarat State and it offers 8 Bachelor Degree Programmes and 7 Master Degree Programmes (2,5 years). Recently Ph.D Programme (5 years) has been introduced at NID Ahmedabad Campus. NID Gandhinagar Campus is situated in the city of Gandhinagar, in Gujarat State and it offers 7 masters programmes of 2.5 years. NID Bengaluru Campus is situated in the city of Bengaluru, in Karnataka State. Bengaluru Campus offers 5 masters programmes (2.5 years).

All NID campuses are open to visitors throughout the year from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (apart from public holidays). Visitors will have to obtain a Visitor's Pass at the Main Gate to enter the campus. If you are visiting us in a group with prior appointment, NID can arrange Guided Tour of Campus.

NID offers professional education programmes at Bachelors and Masters level with five faculty streams and 20 diverse design domains. Recently Ph.D Programme (5 years) has been introduced at NID Ahmedabad Campus. NID has established exchange programmes and ongoing pedagogic relationships with more than 55 overseas institutions. NID has also been playing a significant role in promoting design.

Having entered the 6th decade of design excellence, NID has been active as an autonomous institute under the aegis of the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion,Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India; in education,applied research, service and advanced training in five faculty streams,Industrial Design, Communication Design, Textile, Apparel & Lifestyle Design, IT Integrated (Experiential) Design and Interdisciplinary Design Studies. NID offers a wide spectrum of design domains while encouraging transdisciplinary design projects.NID is a unique institution with many problem-solving capabilities, depths of intellect and a time-tested creative educational culture in promoting design competencies and setting standards of design education. The rigorous development of the designer’s skills and knowledge through a process of ‘hands on-minds on’ is what makes the difference.

The overall structure of NID’s programme is a combination of theory, skills, design projects and field experiences supported by cutting edge design studios, skill & innovation labs and the Knowledge Management Centre. Sponsored design projects are brought into the classroom to provide professional experience.Interdisciplinary design studies in Science and Liberal Arts widen the students’ horizons and increase general awareness of contemporary issues.
