Walking Tour of Lisbon with Cristina

Cristina Duarte was right on time, established a great rapport with our two grandchildren and displayed a deep knowledge of the city of Lisbon and its history. She was very flexible and wanted to show us what we wanted to see. She had some excellent suggestions about places to go after the tour. The tour we took with her included Bairro Alto, Chiado, Aflama and Baixa. Cristina made our first day a wonderful beginning to an incredible adventure in Portugal.

Wonderful tour guide. Very patient and tons of info on Lisbon. We saw so many places in 4 hours!! Giving her the highest recommendation possible

My wife and I have just returned to Canada. having spent a wonderful and memorable 8 hours with Pedro in and around Sintra. He is truly an exceptional guide, beyond question one of the best we have ever had. His knowledge about all aspects of Portugal, its people, history and culture is encyclopedic. He explains everything in a clear, thoughtful manner, with an underlying passion and a keen sense of humour. He is kind and thoughtful, constantly checking in to make sure his visitors are comfortable and content. Simply put, it doesn't get any better than this. We hope to use Pedro's services again, and we would recommend him in a heartbeat. Thank you, Pedro, for an unforgettable experience in your amazing country!

My husband and I were in Lisbon and Porto recently. Over the years when visiting a new city, we like to learn as much as we can about the place, including visiting the sites and learning the history. We were so fortunate to explore Lisbon with 2 amazing tour guides. We took 2 private half day walking tours in Lisbon with Cristina Duarte and walked everywhere. She is charming, knowledgeable, energetic, and fun to be with. We then had 3 full day driving tours outside of Lisbon with her partner, Pedro Lourenco. We visited Sintra, Nazare, Obidos, Cascais, Evora, Alcobaca and returned to Lisbon via the scenic coastal route. Pedro is also a pro like Cristina! We had such a great time with them and recommend them highly. I found their contact email in the Rick Steves tour guidebook and arranged the private tours a few weeks before we left our home in San Diego.

If you are looking for a wonderful tour guide, a very comfortable ride and an amazing experience then you must use Pedro. It is our first time in Portugal (two senior couples) and we wanted to explore outside Lisbon. We arranged for a full day tour with Pedro to take us to Fatima, Óbidos and Nazare and the memories we made we will always cherish. Pedro knows this country’s history in depth and he brings it to life. He is very accommodating (my husband had to have a Starbucks) and flexible. I am normally a nervous passenger in cars and with Pedro at the wheel I was completely relaxed. You can trust him to show you the best sights and to know the best restaurants off the beaten path-we didn’t want the tourist restaurants and we enjoyed two memorable meals because of his advice. We started with a guide and ended with a friend-it doesn’t get better than that!

My husband and I travel extensively. We had the good fortune to meet tour guide, Cristina Duarte who gave us two walking tours of Lisbon. Her partner, Pedro gave us 3 full day tours which included Évora, Sintra, and Obidos. They are fantastic guides, friendly, knowledgeable, with lots of energy and enthusiasm! It was sooo much fun.

Which free tour is best.

walking tours lisbon tripadvisor

There are essentially 5 types of free Lisbon tours and this post will explain what you will see, tour start times, and other important information.

All tours are led by local guides who are well-versed in the cultures and history of Lisbon as well as the history of Portugal.

  • Overview + Schedule
  • Alfama + Mouraria
  • Fado Music Tour

Lisbon has a fascinating and unique history spanning more than 3,000 years. Visitors and locals are drawn to the culinary scene, beautiful vistas, and architectural gems.

Plus, the seven hills, narrow streets, and colorful houses make it the perfect city to discover on foot.

There are multiple neighborhoods and districts in Lisbon, many of which are home to some of the most historic sites in the city.

And there are several free walking tours you can take that cover a variety of different topics and notable landmarks throughout Lisbon.

The tours listed below are run through us. More tours are available in the following sections.

Searching Availability...

Here is a calendar with more of the best free walking tours in Lisbon.

The most popular tours focus on downtown Lisbon, and they typically provide stops at various locations in Bairro Alto, Chiado, and Baixa, which are often called " downtown tours ".

Alternatively, you may also want to consider taking a tour of Alfama and the Mouraria neighbourhoods, considered by many to be old Lisbon.

Here you can also see one of the most famous castles in Portugal and learn about the modern culture of street art in these areas.

Belem Tower

Belém Tower

There are also tours of Belém that provide information about the important role Lisbon played in the Age of Discovery while revealing some of the most significant and historic buildings in the district.

There are even free tours in both Sintra and Cascais , which are worthy of day trips from Lisbon.

You can also take tours that cover details about Fado music and its origins, as well as where you can hear some of the best examples of it nowadays.

Most of these services are pay-what-you-wish walking tours, which means you can decide how much you think they were worth when the tour is over.

According to online reviews, participants often pay between €10-€20/per person on average.

We offer tours globally . Here are just a few cities.

  • Culinary Backstreets Lisbon

Best food walking tour ever!

Culinary Backstreets run an amazing walking tour. Wow. The hillside tour went for 5-6 hours and there was sooooo much food and it was all unreal. Our guide was lovely, and the small group size meant there was plenty of time to get to know the other participants. All of the places we went I would never have found on my own. They were super local and not touristic at all. I only wish I had booked more culinary backstreets tour on my trip to Europe, what a fantastic afternoon out exploring Lisbon.

Highly recommend the Culinary Backstreets Tour with Gisela! Not only did we sample a variety of foods, but we covered the history of Portuguese exploration and trade and how that influenced foods in Lisbon and worldwide. On our tour we explored local places in neighborhoods away from the major tourist areas. Note that our tour ran a little longer - closer to 6 hours.

First off: I'm certain that all of the guides for culinary backstreets are amazing, but Kika was a blessing. We were guided through two neighborhoods at a 'cross-streets' of Portuguese history. Each step along the way came with not just a bite or drink, but a personal touch -- a spot beloved by the Lisboans, a community center, a revolutionary bookstore. As a history buff, this was a must. I was blown away by the experience: Hospitality at every turn; a connection to the non-tourist spots; local people and personality. I felt I was truly shown a window into Portugal, Lisboans, and...Kika! Kika was integral to this experience. Nothing was rushed, everything felt personal and important to her. She was always on and full of care and love.

Every Culinary Backstreet Walk I’ve taken has been a fantastic learning experience and Kika upheld the high quality of these experiences. Her knowledge of the food and its historical and cultural path to Lisbon was extensive, interesting, and well presented. And of course the food was delicious. Kika is a personable leader who makes all participants at ease. This tour is highly recommended!

Ines was a wonderful guide. She shared information and took us to interesting places. It felt as though several of the shops she took us to were her dear friends. It made for a “family” atmosphere. We greatly enjoyed the tour.

Laura gave us a nice background on how the Portuguese specialties developed and we met many small shop owners and two restaurants in a quiet neighborhood showcasing their amazing food (and wine).
