Ember Mug Review: What I Think After Using It for More Than a Year

How the buzzy heated mug faired in our Lab tests — and daily life.

So I jumped at the chance to test the Ember Mug 2 in August 2021. I did some cursory tests — you can read more about how I put it through the paces in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab below — and also just used it in my office life. When official testing was done, I kept on using it. So here we are more than a year later, and it's time to share the upsides and downsides of this coffee tech.

How do Ember mugs work?

Heated mugs keep coffee hot via a hotplate or a built-in heating element. Ember, which falls into the built-in heating element category, is among the best-known. According to the brand, Ember's founder and CEO, Clay Alexander, is an inventor who holds more than 200 patents wor ldwide . The first generation of the heated Travel Mug launched in 2010, and in 2018, the self-heating mug drew investors like Nick and Joe Jonas .

The company is now on the second generation of the product — the Ember Travel Mug 2 — which has a longer battery life and a new LED touch screen. Ember also offers the 6-ounce Ember Cup (a handleless variation designed for espresso drinks) and the 10- and 14-ounce Mug 2 (a traditional coffee mug with a handle).

Ember's products rely on sensors placed throughout the mug that monitor the temperature of the liquid inside and then turn on built-in heaters if the temperature drops below the preset temperature. Out of the box, the default temperature is 135˚F (57˚C), but you can use the Ember app to set the temperature — in 1˚ increments — you prefer. The range for all the products is 120°F – 145°F (50°C – 62.5°C). The app will also send notifications when the set temperature is reached, but you can choose not to receive any. I share more thoughts on the app below.

What I like about Ember mugs

✔️ Easy to use: A regular mug is inherently uncomplicated: You fill it; you sip from it. I didn't want an Ember mug to add too much tech to a simple daily task. And I definitely didn't want to feel like I was on my phone when I wanted to be drinking coffee. The good news: Ember felt set-it-and-forget-it to me. I downloaded the app and paired it with my mug — and now, thanks to testing, multiple mugs. It is very easy to load more than one and then switch between them from your home screen of little mug avatars. I set the temperature I wanted to keep my beverages. And that was it: Now I just turn my mug on — i.e. push the large button on the bottom — fill it and sip from it.

✔️ Useful app: I do appreciate that you can go deeper with the app so that it earns its spot on your phone. It offers presets for latte, cappuccino, coffee, black tea and green tea. Milk-based drinks get a gentler heat to help prevent scalding. There's also a tea timer that offers an up-to-10-minute countdown within the app and also suggests steep timers for green, black and herbal teas. The app even includes recipes like "Chai Spiced White Hot Chocolate" and "Beet Latte" if you want to expand your warm beverage repertoire. You can also use the app to choose the LED color that shows up on your Mug 2 and sync it with Apple Health if you want to track caffeine consumption.

✔️ Simple to keep charged: I like that charging is easy. I'm a coaster user, so I'm always putting my mugs down in a specified place anyway. The Ember charging coaster is a simple landing pad that's just permanently charging at my desk. When I pick up the mug, it's fully charged.

✔️ Solid performance: It succeeds in its main objective: It keeps my coffee hot. I use my Ember Mug 2 when I'm at the office, and apparently, I love to get a coffee and settle in ... only to realize I need to do something away from my desk. With the Ember mug, I feel like I've granted myself a grace period because I know my drink will still be hot when I come back to it. Both the Mug 2 and Cup have been tested in our Lab and sent to consumer testers , and both got positive feedback, leading them to earn our 2021 Kitchen Gear Awards and 2022 Coffee Awards , respectively.

One tester of the Mug 2 said, "I was especially impressed that it not only kept my coffee hot, but it also heated up lukewarm leftover coffee by 20 degrees in only five minutes." In my Lab tests, the Mug 2 held the set temperature for nearly its entire battery life, dropping only slightly in the last 15 minutes. In my daily life, I never felt a drop in temperature during regular use. Even better: The mug itself does not overheat, so I have never burned my lips, as I have with some other mugs. The Travel Mug 2 also aced the heat retention tests, but the Cup did come in under the set temperature for much of the 90-minute battery life.

✔️ Comfortable to hold: The circumference of the Cup is grippable for most hands, even though it doesn't have a handle. (I've also found that the 6-oz Cup fits nicely under my espresso machine and helped my espresso shots stay warm.) The Mug 2 gives me a nice, three-finger grip with a spot for my thumb to rest on top for control. And despite the built-in battery, Ember's mugs are not overly heavy . The Cup and Mug 2 have a bit of extra weight for their size, but I have never felt a strain. The Travel Mug 2 feels like a standard travel mug to me.

The limitations of Ember mugs

✔️ Must wash by hand: I'll say right off the bat, it's not dishwasher safe. That's not a dealbreaker for me — in fact, I've found them easy to clean, thanks to a wide opening and slick surfaces — but it is a small con.

✔️ Will affect the taste of your coffee: The other issue, which isn't specific to Ember but applies: All heated mugs will change the flavor of your coffee over time for the worse — similar to the way drip coffee continues to “cook” when it’s kept warm on a heating plate. This means the longer your brew is held in the mug, the more likely it is to taste more sour, bitter or metallic — all issues I encountered in my testing across the different Ember mugs, though your specific outcome will depend on the coffee beans you use. When I step away from my mug, it's long enough that I'd notice a decrease in temp if I were using a regular mug, but often only 10 to 15 minutes. And then I finish my coffee in probably 20. So I'm grateful for the heat assist over roughly 30 minutes. But I will say that if you want to use the Ember as some sort of coffee incubator over the full 90-minute battery life, you will notice a difference in the flavor from the fresh cup to the final sip.

✔️ Must purchase lid for Cup and Mug 2 : The company offers the Travel Mug 2, so there is a clear option if you want something for your commute; it didn't leak in my tests and kept coffee warm over the battery life. It also has a well-designed push-button lid opening that lets you drink from any angle. But the others are not designed for portability. They're very much intended to take the place of your regular around-the-house (or office) mug. One consumer tester agreed, noting that their experience with the Cup was positive but that they didn't like that they "could only use this cup while sitting at home or in the office." And if you do want a little extra protection from spills, you'll have to purchase a sliding lid (available for the 10- and 14-ounce sizes) separately. I have not yet tested the lids but will be doing so in the coming months.

How I tested the Ember mugs

When I tested the Ember mugs in the Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, I wanted to know whether they really kept the coffee at a consistent temperature. To track the heat over time, I inserted a thermocouple (a thin, wire-like thermometer) into each mug and captured the data during Ember's stated battery life for each.

a shot of three ember mugs during heated mug testing in the lab

The other piece of the puzzle was flavor. Would waging war against the laws of thermodynamics — i.e. keeping coffee hot over a two-hour period — make the coffee taste overcooked? To find out, I tasted coffee from a control cup and then from each Ember mug every 30 minutes. I made notes on the aroma, bitterness, acidity, mouth feel and temperature sensation of each cup.

The last issue was ease of use. I read the owner's manual and considered the design of the app. I checked out the type and readability of the controls and assessed the feel of the mug in my hand and the comfort of drinking from it. I decided what I thought about washing each by hand, as none is dishwasher safe. For the travel mug, I also factored in opening and closing the mug and using the touch-control interface. I also tested whether it leaked by putting it through our timed leak tests: tipping it over, rolling it side to side and shaking it upside down.

Is the Ember Mug worth it?

In a word: Yes. If you think you'd benefit from a heated mug, Ember is a good one. Other styles did well in my broader test of heated mugs, but I have returned to the Ember because it's comfortable to drink from (no burned lips!), easy to set and simple to keep charged. A bonus is the range of styles and sizes as well as colors.

Costco sells this Ember Mug 2 for $99.99. Scroll down for photos. I had never heard of these smart mugs until recently. I thought this was a very clever idea to solve the problem of cold coffee. This is a temperature controlled mug that will keep your coffee hot up 145 ° F. For most people, that will be plenty warm. For those of you who like your coffee to burn your insides all the way down, this may not be for you =). This would make for a nice holiday gift for the coffee lovers in your life. Costco Ember 14 oz. Temperature Control Smart Mug2, Gray

So I’m not sure I would ever buy a product like this. Even though the reviews are decent, I knew exactly what all the bad reviews would say. The biggest complaints are not hot enough, won’t charge, stopped working after so many months & inside is flaking away. This is enough for me to not purchase this item. I just don’t see how this can last more than a year or 2 & then your stuck buying a new one. That’s pretty steep for $99. It seems like it’s more hassle than it’s worth. I feel a traditional high end mug will work better in the end. Please feel free to chime in if you own one. Anyways, I found this in the middle aisle near the holiday items. They currently sell it on Costco.com for $99.99, so if you can’t find it in store, make sure to check online. If you can’t find this anywhere, make sure to check out these other HIGHLY RATED models & different colors / sizes…….

I have one of these and mind you I’ve only had mine since Christmas of 2021 (so it’s been 4 months) there’s no signs of the inside “flaking” away. It’s made of the same stuff as standard mugs so as long as you take care of the finish and don’t use any metal utensils with it, it’ll totally be fine. I actually enjoy mine so much that I bought a second to have at home while I keep my original at work. I no longer have my coffee going cold on me. I don’t know how people complain about it not getting hot enough. This mug is designed to KEEP hot coffee hot, not warm it up. It also has a max temperature setting of 145℉, so unless those complaining aren’t doing something right they must have mouths of steel. As for the charging issues, it says in the instructions not to charge if there’s any moisture present as it will damage the charging coaster. Again, I’ve had no issues if I wash mine, let it dry upside-down for about 30 minutes, and then throw it on the charger. I truly truly love mine and couldn’t live without it at this point. Double walled glass mugs were the closest I could get to the same experience, but they just don’t keep the liquid at the temperature I prefer.

Thanks so much for the detailed review Hayden! Sounds like you are one happy customer. It also sounds like you are someone who reads the manual and follows the directions of the manufacturer. I only recently started reading the manuals and recommended maintenance schedule on electronics & it’s proved to be VERY helpful. Glad you found it useful and you ended up buying a 2nd one! It’s a little steep at $100 but for someone who drinks coffee everyday this would pay for itself very quickly! Thanks for stopping by!

I believe these are the ones from Touch of Modern. They should be good. A little pricey for a coffee mug, but what you are getting will eliminate the need to get up from what you are doing (inside/outside work) and reheat your coffee. Should be worth it.

Thanks for sharing that info Gunman40. Like I said above I just feel like this is something that would end up sitting on the shelf after about a month. Glad to hear you like it and I’ll take a closer look next time I go to Costco.

Ember’s new temperature-controlled tumbler is its biggest and most expensive mug yet

The ember tumbler will keep your drink hot for hours. but you’ll pay handsomely for those luxuriously warm beverages..

A photo of the new Ember Tumbler on a table.

Both of the following things are true: $199.95 is a totally ludicrous price to pay for a mug, and Ember’s new Tumbler looks pretty great. The Tumbler is a 16-ounce black travel mug (the biggest one Ember has ever made) that claims to be able to keep your beverage at exactly the temperature you want it for hours at a time. It comes with two lids — a twist-off one with a handle and a sliding one with a mouthpiece — and Ember says it can handle even your rugged commuter lifestyle. The battery lasts three hours, and you charge it by placing the Tumbler on its charger / coaster accessory. It’s available for presale now and ships on September 22nd.

It’s a travel mug, is the long and short of it. A travel mug that pairs with an app that you can use to heat your drink to the exact degree you want, between 120 and 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Is that worth $200? Up to you! All I can tell you is that everyone I know who has an Ember thinks it’s a ridiculous luxury — and loves it to bits .

Ember has been selling products since 2016, all based on the same temperature-controlling technology. Clay Alexander, the company’s founder, has talked about eventually bringing the tech to dishes and other objects, but so far, Ember has stuck to drinking: in addition to the original Ember Mug and the Travel Mug, Ember also has a temperature-controlled baby bottle . More recently, Ember has also been fashioning itself as a health company, integrating with Apple Health to track caffeine consumption.

The larger, more rugged Tumbler fits right into Ember’s lineup — the most recent Travel Mug still only holds 12 ounces of liquid, which is just not enough coffee — but also might face the most challengers. Other travel mugs may not be able to control temperatures to the degree, but your average Yeti or Zojirushi can keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold pretty much all day. And while three hours of battery life is nice, that may not last through your full Saturday hike. (It’s also worth mentioning that Ember products sometimes have a longevity issue — the battery capacity seems to dip pretty aggressively after a couple of years of use, which is normal for batteries but a bummer for such an expensive mug.)

Still, there’s nothing quite like telling your mug that you like your coffee at 135 degrees, no more and no less, and sitting down at your desk 90 minutes later to find it still at the perfect temperature. The Tumbler, like everything else Ember makes, is a silly guilty pleasure of a device. And I still want one.

Ember Cup and Mug 2 review: confusing, powerful, and piping hot

Wave goodbye to cold cups of tea

Connor Jewiss

As a nation, us Brits rely on a well-made brew to get through the day – stereotypes be damned – and can all agree there are few things worse than a cold cuppa. We’re not the only ones to think so: Ember’s smart mugs are here to keep your hot beverages at the perfect temperature.

Packed with a heating element, built-in battery, and Bluetooth tech, Ember’s mugs look stylish, and mean you’ll never have a cold cup of tea again. “How much is a never-go-cold cuppa?” you might ask. At least £100.

A cup of tea that stays toasty for hours sounds ideal, but do Ember’s mugs warrant such a high price? And how do they fare as yet another smart home device in your house?

Ember Mug 2 and Cup design & features: Warm, calm and collective

ember travel mug costco

The Ember range consists of the Ember Mug 2 , Ember Cup , and Ember Travel Mug . We’re taking a look at both the Cup (designed for smaller espresso drinks) and Mug 2 (designed for larger hot beverages).

The Mug 2 comes in two sizes (10oz or 14oz) and three colours (white, black, and grey). It’s made from stainless steel with a ceramic-coating, so it’ll look like all your other mugs. The stainless steel body means the mug feels lightweight, despite the extra battery tech down below. The handle of the mug is a little on the thin side, but it’s not something you particularly notice when drinking from it.

One big kudos for the Ember mugs is that they don’t get as warm as others. Touch the side of the mug and you’ll feel some warmth, but you’ll easily be able to hold it (more on this later). If you’re looking for a stand-out design for your snazzy new high-tech mug, Ember also offers some metallic options for the Mug 2: Rose Gold, Gold, Copper, and Steel.

Since the Ember Cup is designed for espresso drinks, it’s much smaller, as you’d expect. It holds 6oz, which is enough for a couple of espresso shots (they’re about 1oz each) and some milk on top. The cup is made from the same material, but is only available in black or metallic copper. There’s also no handle on the Cup because of it’s size, but that won’t be a problem thanks to the insulation.

When it comes to cleaning, be ready to break out the marigolds and washing up liquid: unsurprisingly neither the Cup nor the Mug 2 is dishwasher-safe. You can’t stick them in the microwave, either – but then why would you need to, given they heat drinks themselves?

Ember companion app: great, but we’d rather a biscuit

ember travel mug costco

As smart devices, Ember cups have a seemingly obligatory companion app. Ember’s works rather well; it’s simple, not too cluttered, and really responsive. You have to select a mug to connect to when first opening the app, which irks if you only have the one – surely it can tell using the Bluetooth connection.

Otherwise, we’ve got no complaints. The main page lets you quickly adjust the temperature with a quick swipe to the left or right. Swiping up reveals preset temperatures (with an option to program in your own), a tea timer, and rather oddly, some recipes. You can also quickly access the settings, change the mug’s LED light colour, and even connect to Apple Health.

Performance: nothing lukewarm about it

ember travel mug costco

We’ve not seen any smart tech that can raise the heat (pardon the pun) on your hot drinks game quite like an Ember mug does. You make your brew (tea or coffee) as you would any other, with sensors automatically switching on the heating element when you pour liquid into the mug. It then holds the temperature at your preferred default, or you can pick a different one on the fly.

Each Ember mug can hold drinks between 50°C – 62.5 °C, meaning you can leave your cuppa and do something else. When you return it’ll be at just the right temperature. The heating element doesn’t radiate outwards, which isn’t just good for power efficiency: it means you won’t need oven gloves just to take a sip, as it’s less warm to the touch than a normal ceramic mug.

It doesn’t just keep the bottom part of the mug toasty and the top part lukewarm, with all of the liquid being kept at roughly the same temperature. It didn’t drop below our in-app target, either.

The battery is slated to last around one and a half hours, although we found that estimate was a little high. Drink your cuppa as normal and you’ll make it through a few tea breaks, but if you regularly forget about your brew, it’ll be a different story. We’ve at times not even made it through a full cup before the battery trickles out. At least the app notifies you when you’re at 5% charge, so you can pop it on the charging coaster. If you’re sat at a desk, it makes sense to use the coaster anyway – unless you’re a fan of circular stains on all your furniture.

Could you use an Ember Mug or Cup to heat up cold water? Yes, but the firm doesn’t recommend it. We twiddled our thumbs for 50 minutes before a cup of regular tap water hit 62 degrees, so don’t think of this as a replacement for a regular kettle.

Ember Mug 2 and Cup verdict: Hot or not?

Tea drinkers and coffee addicts should be in no doubt: an Ember Mug 2 or Ember Cup will serve your thirst-quenching habits well. They can keep a drink warm for over an hour, and look rather stylish as far as kitchenware goes, with no shortage of colours to choose from.

Yet we can’t help but feel a little daft when needing an app to update our mug’s firmware. Maybe it’s the future, but equally it could be teetering on the edge of smart tech going a step too far.

These are expensive gadgets, too. Anyone who can’t stand cold tea, or needs longer than the length of a coffee break to finish their cup, might be able to justify the price. But for the average consumer, or those that aren’t fans of having an app for everything? Risk a burnt tongue and just gulp your brew down a bit quicker.

We Tried It: Ember Mug 2

I had to find out exactly what this pricey, slick-looking, high-tech mug does and if it could save my midmorning tea woes

Ember Mug

Every morning I brew a cup of herbal tea to enjoy while I first start the workday. I also find myself finishing my cup of by-then cold tea around 11 a.m. Heated mugs offer a solution to the dreaded cold sip of coffee or tea. They keep drinks warm for long stretches of time, saving you from brewing a second cup of fresh coffee or zapping the cold one in the microwave. The Ember Mug 2 boasts 90 minutes of battery time and a sleek design. But is it worth its $150 price?

How Does the Ember Mug 2 Work?

The Ember Mug 2 has a heating element in the bottom of the mug that keeps hot beverages at temperatures ranging from 120° F to 145° F. Sensors in the mug detect when there is liquid inside and record the temperature of the liquid. The 14-ounce mug I tested has a battery run time of up to 80 minutes, and the smaller 10-ounce mug can be used up to 90 minutes before it needs to be charged. Alternatively, by keeping the mug on the charger that doubles as a coaster, you can keep your coffee warm for as long as you keep the coaster connected to power.

The Ember Mug 2 automatically sets the temperature to be maintained at 135° F, but like most smart devices, you can pair the mug with an app on your phone to select a different temperature. From the app you can also:

  • Change the color of the LED light on the base of your mug (though this color is visible only when you first turn it on and when you lift it off the coaster briefly).
  • Connect the app to your iPhone’s Health app to track your coffee consumption .
  • Receive notifications when your desired temperature has been reached or it is time to recharge the mug.
  • Select preset temperatures for common drinks, such as green tea and cappuccino.
  • Use the tea timer that notifies you when your tea has seeped for 3, 5, or 6 minutes.

If you prefer to skip the app, you can still use the mug, but you will lose all customization features. According to the manufacturer, you should not try to microwave the Ember mug or wash it in the dishwasher .

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my ember safe to leave on the charging coaster².

Yes, Ember Mugs are safe to keep on the charger when not in use. When the battery is fully charged, the charging is shut off automatically, so no battery damage will occur. Ember Mugs also have "maintenance charging", which means that if left on the coaster for months on end, the battery is periodically topped off because the battery slowly self-discharges.

Can it charge while actively heating my drink?

If you are keeping your beverage hot while using the coaster, it can maintain your perfect temperature all day!* When Ember is on the charging coaster the battery will stay at a constant level and will not charge any higher until your Ember is empty or is powered off.

* The Ember has a 2 hour inactivity auto shutoff feature. Picking the Ember up to move the accelerometer will reset the 2 hour timer.

How long does it take to charge my Ember?

Once your Ember Mug has an empty battery, place the mug on the charging coaster for approximately 2 hours for a full charge. Once the LED turns green your Ember is 100% charged.

Which Ember Mugs are compatible with the Charging Coaster²?

We are happy to say that the Charging Coaster² is compatible with all first and second generation Ember Mugs. In fact, the Charging Coaster² can also be used with the first and second generation Ember Travel Mugs as well.
