One can easily say that the capital of Japan, Toyo city is a city with many visages - Japan is the center for up to date machinery and technology also progressing heavily in the center of Politics, economics and culture but Tokyo, the capital city of Japan maintains its perfect Edo culture. One can also find the ubiquitous presence of an architecture which is modern in the heart of the city. Here one also notices the presence of the contemporary and predictable bordering on the lines of conventional ethnicity of the neighborhoods. There is also the presence of lovely countryside scenery here. The natural beauty with a combination of modern technological advancements has made Tokyo a fantastic city. Tokyo is really a colourful city. This is proven when the city is bathed in different colours everytime you visit this place. It is different in colour in all the separate seasons. This will take your breath away everytime you take a visit to Tokyo. Our aim is that you enjoy a safe and comfortable stay in Tokyo with our hospitality. To witness the magnificent culture deep-seated in the city you need to  travel to Tokyo . Enjoy the terrific sightings with us when you take a  Tokyo Kyoto Tour from Delhi .

Tokyo Kyoto Tour from Delhi, India

There are great numbers of festivals, observances, rituals and celebrations which are a significant part of Tokyo and if one looks closely enough a large part of the Japanese culture. One is of the point that the celebrations start from the customary New Year visits. There are presence of matsuris which are the religious festivals and their portable shrines which is called mikshosis. Do not dare forget the lovely cherry blossom festival. The bloom happens in the month of April and is extremely popular with both the locals and the tourists. The Japanese culture is unique, people generally are aloof and shy. Anything which is not Japanese is not accepted easily here. People from across the world may find it odd but one can be of the viewpoint that the Japanese culture is quite unique and it really functions in a different manner in comparison to the the rest of the world.

Cherry blossoms, tea ceremonies, calligraphy and poetry mingle to create an unrivalled experience on your Japan tour. Despite its comparatively tiny size, there’s so much to discover in East Asia’s cultural gem. Japan tour packages offer a variety of experiences for travellers who want to delve into the country's culture and traditions. If you're looking for a fully organised Japan trip, the Japan tour packages from Thomas Cook might be the way to go. Japan is a study of dichotomy and cultural coexistence between traditional belief systems and values and an ultramodern way of life. Days are marked by quiet disciplined dedication to work that is the hallmark of life in Japan and evenings bring out the raw, energetic playful side of Japan awash in a sea of neon and sake. Like the Taoist principle of ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’, prevalent in China, Japanese culture has ‘In’ and ‘Yo’, a belief in opposing cosmic forces coexisting in perfect harmony.  If you want an example of a country that works extra hard, and plays even harder, look no further than Japan. This is primarily why Japan is seen as a benchmark for a modern culture that many others aspire to. Organised chaos is the name of the game in Japan. To the casual observer on a Japanese holiday, Japan may appear hectic, crowded and unorganised even, but this is far from the truth. Japan is like a giant jigsaw puzzle where thousands of pieces fit perfectly without any dissonance. Japan tourism is one of these pieces and it manages to fit right in among the many other facets, making a visit to Japan feel alien and homely at the same time. The birthplace of Sushi, the playground of technology, the land from which sleek skyscrapers rise and Anime characters come to life, wouldn’t you like to experience this all? Japan tours are designed to allow you to experience the best of this dichotomy, whether you're interested in visiting ancient temples and experiencing traditional tea ceremonies, or exploring the bright lights and cutting-edge technology of Tokyo . Mountains, volcanoes, forests and sand dunes, let Japan’s natural marvels pull you further and further in on your Japanese holiday with a variety of Japan tour packages from Thomas Cook!

Whether you make a trip in summer, spring or winter, you will be in for a major surprise. So, the best time to visit Japan will depend on what you’d like to see. Spring is known for its iconic cherry blossoms and pleasant days spent ambling around the cities or cycling around rural Japan. Winter, on the other hand, is a snowy wonderland where you can soak in one of Japan’s many geothermal hot springs or spend time in a traditional bathhouse with its wooden hot tubs. You can easily find Japan tour packages scheduled for any of these seasons on our website. Japan has many festivals to mark the changing seasons, depending upon the festivals you wish to partake in and the sights you wish to drink in, your choice of travel will vary. Tokyo is one of the 47 prefectures in Japan and has served as its capital since 1869. Though their names have the same letters, Tokyo and Kyoto are the opposites of each other. Here you will find Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, minimal Zen gardens, imperial palaces and traditional Japanese wooden houses. Kyoto in Japan is also the setting for the film Memoirs of a Geisha and taking a tour of the filming locations will invariably take you to some of Kyoto’s most famous landmarks such as the Fushimi Inari Shrine and Kiyomizu temple. This is a land of lakes and parks. Visit Daisetsuzan National Park with its geothermal hot springs and steaming, volcanic mount Asahi, from where the famous Japanese beer Asahi gets its name. There’s also Shikotsu-Toya National Park with its lakes formed from volcanic caldera and Mount Yotei, Mount Fuji’s twin peak. The ski towns of Rusutsu, Niseko and Furano are an Asian Alpine paradise where you can ski, snowboard or make snow angels. Experience your dream vacation with affordable Japan packages available on our page.

You may remember Mt. Fuji in Japan from the Godzilla movies, or any other film set in Japan for that matter. Mt. Fuji features prominently in any mention of Japan and occupies a place of pride in the Japanese mind who lovingly call it ‘Fuji-san’ as they would a friend or acquaintance. It is one of the three most sacred mountains in Japan and has been a pilgrimage site since the 3rd century. Hiking to the summit of this active volcano is one of the most popular activities you can undertake, passing through forests, past Sinto and Buddhist shrines and an ethereal beauty with a subtle muted colour palette featuring nature and the elements that is the hallmark of Japan. Consider looking for Japan tour packages from India that feature a day trip to Mt. Fuji.

Hiroshima has entered the history books for all the wrong reasons. It was the site of one of the worst acts of war during World War 2. It has since bounced back and now stands as a proud reminder of the resilience of the Japanese people. Hiroshima in Japan is now a modern city and a centre of trade and commerce with its own unique microculture and nightlife. A must visit on your Japan tour while you’re in Hiroshima is the A-Bomb dome, the only structure left standing after the city was destroyed and the Peace Memorial Park where the Flame of Peace, a fire that burns and will continue to burn until global nuclear disarmament is achieved, can be found. You can effortlessly find Hiroshima in the trip itinerary of many Japan tour packages from India.

Ishigaki is the most popular island in the Yaeyama Islands in Japan’s Okinawa prefecture. It is a tropical paradise known for beaches and sites for snorkelling, diving and surfing as well as the commercial hub of the Yaeyama Islands. Osaka in Japan is a large port city and commercial centre on the island of Honshu. It's known for its modern architecture, nightlife and lip-smacking street food such as yakitori and teriyaki. It is also the location of the 16th-century Osaka Castle, its main historical landmark which is surrounded by a moat and park with plum, peach and cherry-blossom trees making it a must visit during your vacation in Japan. Sumiyoshi-taisha is among Japan’s oldest Shinto shrines and one of Osaka’s most visited tourist landmarks where you can spend a peaceful day after a night out in Osaka. So, if you are interested in experiencing everything Osaka has to offer, look for Japan trip packages that include this port city in its itinerary.

Yakushima is an island in the Kagoshima Prefecture of Japan. It is famous for its cedar forests which contain some of Japan’s oldest trees. The beaches here are also famous for being seasonal nesting grounds for loggerhead turtles. Nature lovers and budding naturalists are known to throng to these beaches during hatching season to watch tiny turtle hatchlings take their first steps towards the sea. Spend your dream vacation with your loved one in Yakushima by going for the professionally created Japan trip packages by Thomas Cook.

Hakuba, a common inclusion in many Japan trip packages, is a village in the Japanese Alps, just outside the city of Nagano, which was host of the 1998 Winter Olympics. A winter sports hub, Hakuba is dotted with mountain resorts and mountainous terrain perfect for skiing, snowboarding and hiking. The Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium, built for the 1998 games, at the base of the Happo-one resort is where you can watch daredevil skiers speed down the slopes before leaping off the ramp at the end. Hakuba village also offers grades of skiing for novices and experts alike and hot springs for you to beat the cold after a long day carving up the slopes.

Cuisine in Japan

Inspired by exotic regional produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, Japan creates gastronomical delights that continue to take the world by the storm. Some of its best and most traditional dishes include sushi (raw fish in fermented rice rolls), sashimi (thinly sliced raw fish), tempura (battered seafood/vegetables), yakitori (chicken skewers), tsukemono (pickles), udon (noodles) and sukiyaki (beef). Historically influenced by the Chinese, today Japanese cuisine has opened itself up to the influences of western cuisines. So, even when browsing through available Japan travel packages that include meals, make sure to do your own research on the local cuisine to get the best out of your trip.

Take a ramen tour of Japan

Ramen, known worldwide as an instant convenience food, is an artform in Japan. Witch types and styles of ramen that vary from prefecture to prefecture, taking a ramen tour of Japan makes perfect sense for the gastronomically inclined. Slurp ramen with miso, corn and plump scallops from Hokkaido, or try the shoyu ramen in Tokyo, with its light flavourful broth. Purists can try the tonkatsu ramen at Yokohama’s Chinatown, where this hearty dish was born on their Japan tour.

Train like a sumo wrestler

Tokyo’s Tomioka Hachiman Shrine is the birthplace of sumo wrestling. Your Japan tour must include a pitstop at this temple to check out the temple and the neighbouring Ryogoku district where you will find dohyo’s or dojo’s or schools where sumo wrestlers live and train. Watch these gentle giants in action as they push, pull and throw each other around. Some dojos will allow you to partake in the action with a one-day sumo training course after which you can sit down to a hearty meal of Chankonabe, a specialty soup eaten by sumo wrestlers.

Climb Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji, affectionately called Fujisan by the Japanese is an active volcano and Japan’s most iconic geographical landmark. It lies to the south west of Japan’s capital- Tokyo. One of the adventurous things to do in Japan is to climb the popular Mount Fuji in the months of July and August. Visitors can even enjoy the breath-taking views from either of these places- the Shin-Fuji station, from the top of the Chureito pagoda or any of the five lakes that surround the mountain. Experience Mount Fuji and various other Japanese wonders with the Japan travel packages by Thomas Cook.

Cheer Yourself Up with Japanese Cherry Blossoms 2024

The Cherry Blossom festival is Japan tourism’s biggest draw. People flock to gardens all over Japan to enjoy an evening of food, drinks, and music under the newly blossomed cherry trees and celebrate the view of the delicate pink sakura and ume flowers. Being in the Honshu region of Japan during the months of March and April is one of the best things to do in Japan.

But when is the best time to visit? How to celebrate the cherry blossom festival? Read on to get answers to all your questions about the Japan cherry blossom.

When is the Japan Cherry Blossom Season 2024?

You can witness the beautiful colors of the cherry blossom season from April to May . However, the exact time depends on the location and weather conditions.

The blooming period lasts two weeks on average. And the flowers remain in full bloom for a few days. That's why you must plan carefully if you want to catch the beauty of the cherry blossom season in Japan.

The blossoms start from north to south. That means the Kanto and Kansai regions will be the earliest to witness the flowers. And the Tohoku region would witness it latest.

Best Places to See Japan Cherry Blossom

You can enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms in many places in Japan. There are many parks and gardens where the cherry trees are in full bloom during spring.

Tokyo, Kyoto, Hokkaido, and Osaka are the favorites of tourists for enjoying the beautiful blooming flowers. Tokyo has several large parks and gardens where you can see the flowers and have picnics with your friends and family.

Here are some of the top places to enjoy the Japan cherry blossom season –

  • Ueno Park, Tokyo
  • Meguro River, Tokyo
  • Philosopher’s Walk, Kyoto
  • Mount Yoshino, Nara Prefecture
  • Hirosaki Castle Park, Aomori Prefecture

How is the Japan Cherry Blossom Festival Celebrated?

The Japanese appreciate the beauty of cherry blossoms. The celebrations' main goal is to recognize life's transient nature. Just like the beautiful flowers, nothing is permanent in life.

They call their celebrations Hanami. It means flower viewing. Families gather outdoors and have picnics and parties while admiring the flowers.

Want to take part in Hanami? It's easy.

  • Look for the perfect spot to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms.
  • Now, get your food and drinks ready.
  • You can then sit back and relax with your loved ones. Minutes will turn into hours and you will still long for more.

You can ask a friendly Japanese policeman for a ride and they will ensure you are dropped off home safe and sound, a unique experience on your Japan tour for sure.

Visit the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum

Japan is the only country in the history of the world to have been attacked with an atomic weapon. The tragic day of August 9, 1945 is still remembered all over the world. To honour those who lost their lives in the incident and the efforts of the Japanese Government to spread awareness about the repercussions of the weapon used in the regions of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, led to the establishment of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. Visiting this museum on your Japan trip is a sobering reminder of the horrors of war.

Indian nationals planning their foreign trip to Japan should know that they are required to have a Japan visa in order to gain entry into the country. To do so offline, individuals will need to apply for it at the Japanese embassy or consulate in India (Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata). On the other hand, they can also apply for a Japan visa online. Some Japan tour packages include visas as a part of the package. The validity period of a Japan tourist visa is up to three months after its issuance. This type of visa is a single-entry visa that allows a stay of up to 90 days. Individuals are required to submit all the necessary documents and pay the visa fees when applying for this visa. Even though Indian tourists will need to get a tourist visa prior to their arrival in Japan, it is suggested not to apply for it earlier than 45 days from the planned date of travel. In general, the essential documents that Indian citizens are required to produce when applying for a Japan tourist visa include a valid passport, fully filled and signed visa application form, an original passport, accommodation proof, flight ticket details, a couple of recent photographs, financial statements, etc.

For your visa-related requirements, consider checking out the online visa services offered by Thomas Cook. To book your Japan tourist visa online, just head over to the online visa page, enter the necessary details (such as destination country, visa type, preferred branch, etc.), provide your contact information and submit it to get a quote. After that, provide the additional details, pay online, submit the necessary documents online or at a nearby offline branch and receive your visa in just a few days.

Food to Eat in Japan: Local Dishes to Try

A trip to Japan is incomplete without trying out at least a handful of the most popular local dishes. Here are some of the best local dishes in Japan that you must try;

Sushi is among the most famous Japanese dishes and needs no new introduction. It is a type of dish made using vinegar sushi rice, and a number of other ingredients, especially raw fish and other seafood. Served in small finger-sized bites, sushi both looks and tastes great and is available all across the country. The best way to eat sushi is by dipping it in wasabi mixed soy sauce. The most common types of Sushi you can try in Japan include kabura sushi, inari sushi, maki sushi and nigiri sushi.

Ramen is yet another widely popular local dish you must try during your Japan trip. It is basically a type of noodle soup that contains four main components, wheat noodles, broth, kaeshi or tare (seasoning) and various toppings. The four main types of ramen are shoyu, shio, miso and tonkotsu. It is a very delicious local Japanese food enjoyed by both locals and tourists and is available across thousands of eateries and restaurants in the country. So, when looking for Japan travel packages, research the best places to grab this dish during your visit.

Miso soup is a well-known local dish you can try after finishing a hearty Japanese meal. This dish is not just extremely delicious but is also quite nutritious. A traditional miso soup in Japan is made using miso paste, dashi and other ingredients, including fish, deep-fried tofu, vegetables, etc. Some people even prefer miso soup over any kind of dessert after concluding their meal.

Alongside Ramen, Udon is a well-known local noodle dish you can try during your Japan tour. It is a thick and chewy traditional Japanese wheat noodle dish that is topped using ingredients like fish cakes (Kamaboko), tempura, abura-age, chopped scallions, etc. Unlike Ramen, Udon is more favoured for its noodles and not broth. During your Japan tour, make sure to try a distinct style of Udon from Nagoya called Kishimen.

During your Japan tour, make sure to try Sukiyaki in a social dining setting to get a clearer picture of Japanese cuisine, culture and tradition. Sukiyaki is a local hot pot dish containing a variety of thinly sliced vegetables, raw beef, noodles, etc., cooked together in a small pot with boiling broth, usually at the centre of the table. It is a hearty, mouthwatering dish you simply can’t miss out on.

Epic One Week India to Japan Itinerary – Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Kyoto, Osaka

Japan 7 days itinerary

Japan is just not a country but an experience

Tokyo – Yamanashi – Kyoto – Osaka – Tokyo

Japan is known as the land of the rising sun. It is an island country that rose from its ashes. It is commendable how technologically advanced this country is despite the disasters it faced during the World War. As soon as you will land in Tokyo, sky scrapers and advanced technology will welcome you. At first glance you might think this country is modern and progressive but once you move out of Tokyo, you will also find that culture has still be preserved and the locals believe in their customs and art work.

I explored Japan over a week and had a chance to explore Tokyo, Yamanashi, Kyoto and Osaka. Below you will find a detailed itinerary for these places and what all you can see in one week.

Disclaimer:  This article may contain links to our affiliate partners such as Amazon, Booking.com, etc. If you find our website useful, please consider booking through our links. When you do we earn a small percentage at no extra cost to you.

Before Your Trip to Japan

There is a 7 Day JR Pass available which will make up for the steep spendings between Tokyo to Kyoto. It is also valid on Shinkansen bullet trains  and  Narita Express  trains. This provides a great value for money.

In fact you can also pre order it online for which you will receive an Exchange Order which you can swap for a JR Pass when you arrive in Japan.

You can buy it here – JR Pass

Pocket WiFi Device

You can also pre order your pocket WiFi device which is basically your hotspot and will give you access to the Internet wherever you go. This will make your travels very comfortable as you will be able to get directions, train schedules or restaurants in the area. We travelled without a SIM card as we had this and through this device you can connect upto 10 devices. Pretty cool, eh? 😉

7 Days in Japan – Japan Itinerary

Day 1 – reach tokyo.

Japan is in another corner of the world. Since it is very far from India, the journey to this country is long and exhausting. My advice will be to plan ahead and book your flights in advance to find cheaper deals.

How to Reach Tokyo by Air from India

You will land in Narita or Haneda Airport in Tokyo, after a long flight of 12 to 14 hours. I will advice you to check the prices on websites like skyscanner.co.in or kiwi.in well in advance. This way you will be able to get best and cheaper deals.

From Narita Airport to the Main City

Day 2 & 3 – Explore Tokyo

The historical capital of Tokyo in the best place to visit in Tokyo. You will find Sensoji Temple and Nakamise Street here.

TeamLAB Borderless Museum

This place is a sensory overload. You will find floating lanterns here that changes colors and reflect in all the directions. You will also find a room that will make you feel that crystals are raining down.

I will suggest you to buy tickets well in advance as this place is house full. You can also buy on the spot but chances are it might be sold out.

Meiji Shrine

Meiji Shrine is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife. It is a must visit place when you are in Tokyo. From beautiful walks  through the forest to sight seeing events like “Saki Barrels”. It is a perfect place to know the culture and history of Japan.

Baseball Match

This will a very culturally rich experience as Japanese because baseball is the national sport of Japan. You can see a baseball match either in the Tokyo Dome or at Jingu Stadium. The season is between March to October, that happens on most days apart from Monday.

Japan Zebra Crossing

You might know Shibuya’s pedestrian crossing if you have watched movies that were shot in Tokyo. It is a sight to see. The place is so crowded with so many people and very lively because of all the fun shops and restaurants.

Day 4 – Tokyo to Yamanashi

There are buses that connects Tokyo to Yamanashi and would take about two hours to reach this place.

Mt Fuji is open to hikers from June to mid-September. If you have extra time in hand you can opt for this hike. If not, read below what all you can do in Yamanashi in half a day 🙂

Kachi Kachi Ropeway

The rope-way is located in Lake Kawaguchi offering a magnificent view of the lake, city and Mt.Fuji.

Houto Noodle

Yamanashi’s Houto is flat udon noodles stewed with vegetables in miso based soup. We experienced the cooking of it with the help of a local family.

Chureito Pagoda

This is the best place to be in Yamanashi as it offers superb views. The Pagoda is located in Arakura Sengen Shrine. And if you are visiting this place during cherry blossom season that will actually be a cherry on the cake.

Day 5 – Yamanashi to Kyoto

Take a bullet train or otherwise known as Shinkansen to reach Kyoto. If you have a JR Pass it will help you to travel even more comfortably. Also, if you want to experience Japanese culture in the truest sense in Kyoto, then you have to stay in a Ryokan in Kyoto .

After relaxing a little in your ryokan, you will have half a day to visit the nearby places. Some of the must-see places that can be easily covered in half a day are listed below –

Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine

The shrine is the head shrine with about 5000 red torii gates like a tunnel. The shrine is at the base of a mountain (233 m) which has a trail up the mountain and spans 4 KM.

View this post on Instagram Fushimi Inari-taisha famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, however, it is said that there are a total of more than 10,000 torii gates. After visiting the shrine go to Arashiyama area. The landscape of Arashiyama is simply amazing and you will find mountains, river and a beautiful bridge. However, the most iconic spot of this place is the Bamboo Groves which is also considered the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Rickshaw ride in Gion

Nishiki Market in the Gion is the best traditional food market in the city. You can enjoy the street food and take a rickshaw ride as well, wear a kimono here and experience the rich Japanese culture. There are many tourists and locals who roam around this street in Kimono. It is one of the most authentic cultural experience.

Day 6 – Kyoto to Osaka

The best way to travel to Osaka from Kyoto will be by rail. After reaching Osaka, you can either go for katana experience or visit the Universal studio, but Osaka’s best essence can be seen at night as the whole city is lit up with neon colours.

Go to energetic the famous Dotonbori area and eat delicious local food. Enjoy today, party as tomorrow you would have to head back.

Day 7 – Osaka to Tokyo and Back to Your Homeland

You can take a flight back directly from Osaka, or fly to Tokyo and take the return flight from Narita Airport, whichever is cheaper.

Eating in Japan as a Vegetarian Indian

As a vegetarian I did not have the freedom to try Japanese cuisine, as it is majorly non vegetarian oriented. However, you will find Indian restaurants in every city, at ever corner. So if you are like me, do not worry, food will not be one of your concerns as Vegetarian Indian food is available everywhere.

Top 5 airlines serving from New Delhi to Tokyo

The space for the seats i like it. Its not too close like other air line. The food is ok and also the staff. I'm waiting for my flight rewards point because until now i didn't recieved it.

The staff, ground and air, at ANA was very helpful and friendly during check in, boarding and during the flight. This is the reason why I always fly ANA whenever I go to Manila. The food was not the best but the flight crew more than makes up for the shortfall.

First I will say this was really NOT an ANA flight. ANA used a UNITED jet to perform this flight. I specifically booked with ANA because I did NOT WANT TO FLY UNITED FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS. So to spend $1800.00 and then discover after booking that it was going to be handled by United was very disappointing. I will be more careful next time when I book. The interior was very cramped in economy class; the dinner meal was terrible and also had extremely small portions for an international flight - the bread roll was ice cold and stale - that salad was very wilted; I’ve never had a “snack” that was so salty that it was difficult to eat; the breakfast “waffle” was practically unrecognizable. Really horrible meals for a very expensive international flight. Bathroom floor was also pretty dirty. I’m hoping my return flight is a real ANA airplane that is cleaned and serviced by ANA personnel with ANA meals. I will never book with ANA again if they continue to use UNITED airline jets. Yuck!!!🤢

Ticket was purchased as a United Airlines flight (operated by All Nippon) like what does that even mean? Makes for a VERY confusing flight experience. For instance, what do I look for a United drop off signage and ticket counter or ANA? No explanation anywhere to be found. I also felt a little bit scammed by the obsurdely restrictive seat selection provided. Only middle seats available!! Are you kidding me!! On 6hr + 10hr flights you're forcing me into the middle seat without telling me before I purchased the ticket?? This should be illegal. And to top it off, on the Tokyo LA leg there were quite a few empty seats including window seats! I must also say, the food was a dissappointing as well for my taste, fish with rice ( mostly plain white rice) or a vegetable medly for the breakfast meal? Should be at least 4 choices and at least 1 with eggs. Outside of these issues flight was otherwise ok.

Ground and flight crew were all courteous, extremely helpful and professional. Overall, process is really organized, from boarding to disembarkation.

This is a very long flight and the first time I have flown on a Japanese airline. I was very impressed with the staff. They worked hard and offered food and drink regularly. Plane was very well cared for. The let room was good . Food was ok but better than other airlines.

It was very nice. I was a bit disappointed by the few meal services. There were probably more drink services that I missed while sleeping, but I would have liked the crew to bring more than one drink service before landing and to bring more than one drink service and coffee service after take off

The space and bed was very comfortable , flight attendants very nice. The food was not tasty at all. I ordered the rib eye and it was so tough I couldn’t cut it.

Seat was roomy enough . The Asian selection for a meal was good . The tortellini was not very good. Service was excellent. O

It was very good. Lots of room with superior food and service. I will not hesitate to fly ANA in the future!

I like the braised beef., miso soup,, and green tea. Very little choices of hollywood movies. The PA announcement in English was not very clear and very soft. I could hardly hear.

More updated movies & Chinese movies. The food sometimes overcooked. Prefer to have more neat snacks in between than just choose from the menu. Please change the menu every now and then. This is my second time flying within one year and the menu didn’t change at all!

Food is lagging. Very poor choice. Like vending machine fast food.

Please change the menu more often. The beef is not tender, more choice in ice cream flavor. Dessert is not good too.

The Experience was fantastic, it's a quick flight so no entertainment or food. Just a refreshment

Again I paid for an upgrade on my credit card didn’t get it need a refund. . American I not good at gettin in contact for refunds.

l enjoyed the variety of good and drink choices. The flight attendants were very quick and efficient to our needs.

-Bathrooms were regularly checked/maintained. -Food was okay, but the miso soup was good. -Top of my foot got bitten by a bug when I took off my shoes and was only wearing my socks. It was swollen and very itchy for several days.

Truly impressive service in the air. After the main meal, they have a delicious a la carte menu that you can order anytime until 1.5 hrs prior to landing. Flight crew were so pleasant and very efficient. Wish I could fly JAL more often!

Attentive crew, great service with regular rounds of drinks and trash collecting. Only complaint is the food, which was mediocre.

The boarding experience was as expected and went well. The plane's economy seating plan is not designed for a positive customer experience but rather for company profit. When the passenger in front of me reclined, the distance from the screen to my face was the span of my hand (thumb tip to pinky fingertip). There is no such thing as personal space in this setting. This results in the domino effect, for when I recline the person in back of me reclines and so it goes. This is not to say that reclining is the answer as the experience is not increased, but simply managed.

we were upgraded which was a blessing and tender mercy for us. I fell the day before and was in extreme pain from knee to shoulder. Sitting in a more comfortable seat during the flight was an unexpected blessing and experience.

My seat was sold off to someone else. Had to wait 9 hours to catch the next filght. Definitely will never use Cathay Pacific again. Bad, very bad airline. will comment on google reviews too.

Not impressed with check in desk staff at Vancouver airport. Not a professional mind service and not cared or tried to help. Don’t think I would fly with them again

One of the worst flight in business class by qatar airways and I’m no stranger with qatar airways businesses class, I travelled with the extensively in the past 12 years

The aircraft was slightly newer but the food was very bad. Bland and uninteresting. Nothing special at all.

The crew were fine. I didn’t enjoy the food at all. I found it unappetising and really had trouble eating it. The comfort level was fine and our return flight is with Cathay Pacific but honestly I probably wouldn’t fly Cathay Pacific again.

Everything went smooth. All flights were on time No changing gates, . No changing flights . It was like a completely different airlines tha n the last time I used Cathay Pacific . The last flight, 2 months ago, I had before this one was from Philippines also . I got changed in Manila and was told it only added 2 hours onto my flight . My 20 hour return trip ended up being 30 hours return with a 10.0 hour layover in New York with no seats anywhere . Everyone was sleeping or sitting on the floor . Unlike the hotel I was given in Manila to wait for this flight home . I never thought I would use Cathay Pacific again . But I did and this time you were great! I should have complained about the flight and layover from Hell a couple months ago. Consider that I am complaining about that august/23 flight now . Thank you got the great flying experience on my way home from philippines .

Everything was good food could be better but ok for economy on my 2nd flight the head ph jack are bad you have to hold pushed in to hear anything but other then that very nice service

i booked vegetarian hindu meal for my flights from delhi to hong kong, and hong kong to los angeles. on first flight, they said that they do no have my meal information. thank fuilly some veg meals were still left and i could eat. However, on second flight they game me hindu non vegetarian meal, and I ate shrimp without knowing. pathetic.

Flight was delayed 2 hours, which seems regular with this airline. Aircrew were avarage, friendly but robotic. At check in I asked for a spare seat. Got some stupid response about loading capacity (it was 85% full!) Then passengers behind jumped up and moved to vacant exit rows, they obviously didn't pay for. Waited over 20+ minutes to disembark, with ground staff trying to squash all passengers onto 1 bus. Causing even more delays. Unsafe and stupid! But this is a problem at Saigon airport. Overall a very average experience!

In experience we didn't even get water unless it was paid for. Even Bamboo Airlines provided free water. The flight was cold with no blanket being provided. The flight attendants were not responsive in keeping the passengers under control. I complained about fellow passengers playing loud music several times before one of the flight attendants to action. I will not recommend flying with Vietjet unless things improve.

I have few bad reviews about VietJet, but my experience was really good and it worth every penny..

Not even free water. NO legroom. Narrow seats. Not enough room to even hold a book at reading distance in front of you.

No food? No movies? No water?? On an international flight, really???

No water or snacks. Crew did not give us arrival cards. There was no need for more than 1 flight attendant as they did not do anything

I got to the airport and flight was cancelled without notice

Some chair in the flight should be maintained, but I think they may not have time to check every seats, since it is high demand in this period.

Our experience was the worst. Over 2 days flight was changed and delayed 4 times. Not impressed

Very bad experience and will never try their service again. Not even water serve for 8hr flight. Will have to wait for every prepurched to cimplete before can buy water.

Entertainment system was not working and was told I would get a voucher and have not got one. No toiletries were available not even a toothbrush false sweet talk by ground staff

Worst International flight I ever had in my whole life time. Boarding is the worst of all and flight experience was also not good. Screens were not working, seats were not comfortable and lot more.

Air India needs to launch new planes. Seats are worn out, most of the plane's TV screens wasn't working, USB charging ports wasn't working as well so I can charge my phone & watch my download movies, Food was mediocre, the plane smells. How can Air India put through their customers with this bad experience? This complaint needs to get escalated to the upper management. How shameful is the upper management to improve this plane? The flight is going back & forth from NEW YORK & DELHI. Two of the big cities in the world and this is how your experience is for sitting in a plane for 12+ hrs? Get your planes fixed ASAP Air India (TATA Management do your job right).

One of my worst experiences. Nothing was working in the flight. Entertainment system was broken, seat was very uncomfortable, crew did not offer water until food was provided, lights were not working, attendant call was not working. In short everything was broken and duct taped.

Old aircraft, crew were so so. Meals were mediocre. Flight to delhi was delayed. Lounge needs update and was mediocre too.

The food on board the flight was atrocious - tasteless, spicy as hell, and simply a hodge podge of nonsensical items of poor quality.

The crew smile nicely when you board and exit, in between they are sullen and innattentive

Departure gate flipped twice within 15 minutes. Made passengers to move from one gate to other. Delayed boarding and departure. This is inconvenient for elderly wheelchair passengers and people traveling with children.

Flight got delayed by 3 hours but no compensation or anything

Better entertainment choices and better food required. Mediocre as compared to other airlines. Planes are old and need revamping

Top 5 airlines flying to tokyo.

I cancelled the flights in good time but could only get a partial refund. I was not warned of this.

Not good. Flight was purchased for my father who needed medical assistance to board and transfer due to a heart condition. No one at Hong Kong from Cathay was there to assist and he barely made the connection. When I talked to him he could barely breath and was not sure he was going to make it. Really poor service even though the ticket stated he needed a wheelchair assistance.

While I was in great pain, the seat was sufficiently comfortable to allow me to rest and not be in so much pain.

Not impressed with check in desk staff at Vancouver airport. Not a professional mind service and not cared or tried to help. Don’t think I would fly with them again

Very comfortable flights. Not so many new releases in terms of films.

The aircraft was slightly newer but the food was very bad. Bland and uninteresting. Nothing special at all.

Lounge in pukhet not good Very nice new aircraft Super crew as nearly always with Cathay

I felt thirsty and asked the flight attendent for water, but no one came for more than half an hour.

The cabin was quite noisy as there were lots of children travelling for the school holidays. Found the selection of movies limited.

Delayed, not enough information. Had to ask for refreshments, crew could have been more proactive

The best so far coz this time it was all male steward on the economy cluster. They were polite, efficient & genuinely courteous. They do not judge you when you ask for more food & peanuts.

Delayed for 45 minutes. Don't know what's the issue. Other than that, food was not to my satisfaction. However it's okay.

My first course flight (Aor-Kul) was cancelled in the morning, and they asked me to board the night flight hence I need to transit overnight for the 2nd flight (Kul-Myy) that supposed to be on the same day. The overnight stay was not provided, (I'm traveling with my spouse, a daughter (5 y.o.) and an infant (2 months old). Hence I booked Sama Sama Hotel at my own expense (fortunately using my enrich miles points). Other than this issue, all services is good.

My experience with the flight was okay. My experience checking in was absolutely terrible. I was told I needed to change my e-ticket number to check in because I missed my flight in PDX. Even when shown the itinerary, they didn't budge and sent me to KLM across the airport. KLM wasn't open until 8pm and my flight was at 7:30pm. Nobody made accommodations in any way to get me to KUL. To add insult to injury, they rescheduled my flight to the very next day, creating a very long layover and did not offer any hotel stay. After this, even worse, I found out later they delayed the first 7:30pm flight to 9:10pm. Meaning, I could have still boarded but they refused to even try to get me on the plane. As a result, I missed a day of work and lost pay for the day. Also, when I went to get my luggage, it wasn't there. It was STILL in Singapore. They had from 5:30pm to 5am to get my luggage onto the plane and they still couldn't get that right. This is the worst experience I've had flying anywhere in the past decade I've been travelling.

Orange juice change to mineral water . Should keep the orange juice.

Entertainment system was too old, crew were unorganised during boarding

No recognition for one World Emerald member. Business class seat has flat bed

No recognition for one World Emerald member. I got row 1 in business class and it was pathetic. No leg space, cramped space, less recline

Not comfortable for sitting. Sits are too close to each other and it’s too hard for butt..you need to improve your entertainment section like tv programming, Movies, it’s so hard to kill 15 hrs in long flights .you don’t serve good food like other competitive airlines thats my opinion

Worst International flight I ever had in my whole life time. Boarding is the worst of all and flight experience was also not good. Screens were not working, seats were not comfortable and lot more.

Comfortable seats, on time departures and arrival, and helping staff

Very very impressed with the proactive care and alertness with which ABHISHEK Chowdhary took care of us. Quietl, dignified , very alert, and meticulous. Very impressed. Also with SUNiL Kumar who was there for us in a very helpful way. SHERLY ALEX On Flight 119, BOM TO JFK CUSTOMER ON SEAT 21C, 21ST March 2024

If you are traveling to mumbai -- must try SFO - MUM direct flight. It's a game changer when you are traveling to India. Timings are well designed, optimal and makes the travel enjoyable.

On time boarding, proper information, friendly and cordial approach of staff, particularly crew members and the most important timely available of checked in baggage after arrival.

Air India need a big change of in all departments.

A 10 day backpacking trip to Japan for an Indian traveler

Photo of Sagar Pradhan

Photo of A 10 day backpacking trip to Japan for an Indian traveler 1/1 by Sagar Pradhan

'Konnichiwa!!!'

As an Indian traveler it is believed the world is very rude towards us. We are made to believe that people from other countries are read to racially abuse us and probably throw us out of hotels.

Well... Japan shattered this image. And how !!!! Japanese people are one of the sweetest people I have come across on the Earth. Extremely humble, hard working and having an extreme care for convenience of others, Japanese people made us fall in love with this beautiful country.

Also, Japan is only expensive when you spend like a millionaire. Japan otherwise gives a lot of budget options for a backpacker budget traveler to enjoy !!!

Below mentioned is step by step guide to ten days in Japan. The itinerary is Jam packed with day to day activity to ensure maximum value for time allocated. :P

Japan is a country filled with contrasts between modern society and ancient traditions. Words of warning: This itinerary packs a lot in, and can feel a bit rushed. We think this would be ideally spread across 10 days.

April is often considered the best time to visit Japan because the cherry blossoms are in full bloom in most regions of the country and the weather is pleasantly mild.

Please note all expenses are inclusive of a couple (2 people) travelling together...

TOURIST VISA - Required Documents

1.Application with Photo - Application from website

3.Travel Booking (Travel itinerary and Hotel Booking); 4.Document to prove ability to pay for travel expenses - (a)Latest Income Tax Return; (b) Bank Statements of last 6 months

Visa Fees for Indian nationals:

Single or multiple entry visa: Rs.440 and Transit visa: Rs.40

Things to remember:

Tokyo, Japan is 3 hours and 30 minutes ahead of India

Most metro stations in Tokyo have English signs, but the system can get confusing. Get a free map beforehand in order not to get lost. Also, remember that public transportation isn’t working 24/7 in Tokyo, so catch the last train before 11pm.

As many streets have no name and not everyone speaks English consider renting a wireless router that will allow you to use google maps.

It can be surprisingly difficult to find an ATM that accepts foreign cards, even in Tokyo. The easiest place to get money is an ATM at 7-Eleven.

There is no tipping when eating out in Japan.

If you enjoyed your dining experience and want to express your gratitude or compliment the chef/service staff, a friendly "Gochiso-sama-deshita" will do.

You can get around almost everywhere in Tokyo with JR trains and Tokyo metro subway lines. Get a "Suica" or "Pasmo" rechargeable card, which you can also use at some shops.

If you need help with directions, you can probably find someone to assist you (in English) at a kōban police box, which you'll find close to most train stations.

Getting around without speaking Japanese is not as scary as you may think. Most people are helpful, and little phrases like "sumimasen" (excuse me) and "arigato" (thank you) go a long way.

Japan Rail Pass:

Information is on passes is available online at www.japanrailpass.net and www.japanrail.com .

Cost:36,000/- INR

• You can use the JR pass to travel between Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and many other cities. The pass is good on virtually all JR routes, including the high-speed trains, but not on the ultra-high-speed Nozomi.

• Within Tokyo, you can use the pass on the JR Yamanote line, which makes a circle around central Tokyo, but not on the subways. Within Kyoto, the JR pass is practically useless. Within the Hiroshima area, the JR pass will take you to Miyajima.

• After you arrive in Japan, you exchange the voucher for a pass and set the date that the pass begins. When you do the exchange, you can get all your seat reservations. If you don't get a seat reservation, you can get on the train and find a seat (if available) in an unreserved car.

• With a Rail Pass, you can make seat reservations for free, which otherwise costs ¥510 ($4.25/£2.10) per ride on the Shinkansen.

• The rail pass entitles you to unlimited travel on all JR train lines including the Shinkansen (except, regrettably, the Nozomi Super Express), as well as on most JR buses and the JR ferry to Miyajima.

• The standard Japan Rail Pass is available only to foreigners visiting Japan as tourists and can be purchased only outside Japan.

• Upon purchasing your pass, you'll be issued a voucher (called an Exchange Order), which you'll then exchange for the pass itself after you arrive in Japan. Note that once you purchase your Exchange Order, you must exchange it in Japan for the pass itself within 3 months of the date of issue of the Exchange Order. When obtaining your actual pass, you must then specify the date you wish to start using the pass within a 1-month period.

• Once You've Arrived -- In Japan, you can exchange your voucher for a Japan Rail Pass at more than 40 JR stations that have Japan Rail Pass exchange offices, at which time you must present your passport and specify the date you wish to begin using the pass; most offices are open daily from 10am to 6 or 7pm, some even longer.

• At both Narita Airport (daily 6:30am-9:45pm) and Kansai International Airport (daily 5:30am-11pm), you can pick up Japan Rail Passes at either the Travel Service Center or the Ticket Office

Japan Suica Card

Cost:10,000/- INR

Japan’s Suica and Pasmo cards are your ticket to ride on Tokyo’s JR trains, private subway lines and Narita’s N’EX express airport train.

Add tap-and-go payment at railway kiosks, convenience stores, buses, taxis and even vending machines, plus other public transport systems in a dozen other parts of the country, and you can see why one of these prepaid ‘e-money’ cards is almost a must-have for business travellers to Japan.

Suica vs Pasmo: which card should you get?

There’s no real difference between Suica and Pasmo cards except that Suica belongs to Japan’s national train operator JR while Pasmo is offered supported by a number of private railway operators.

Each cards works on both train networks, and a variety of train and bus networks in other Japanese cities, so you only need one card to carry around.

You can pick up a Suica card for ¥2,000 ($A22) or a Pasmo for ¥1,500 (A$17) from smartcard ticket machines at most train stations in Tokyo.

Those prices include a refundable ¥500 deposit, so depending on which card you buy you’ll have either ¥1,500 or ¥1,000 as credit.

Train fares for shuttling around central Tokyo are fairly low, at between ¥160 and ¥170 (around A$1.85), so that balance should be enough for a few days.

When buying either card you’ll have the option to register it via the ticket machine’s touchscreen. It’s a quick process which means the card’s balance will be refunded if you lose the card.

ards work with other public transport systems across Japan

Topping up your Suica or Pasmo card

Your card's balance is displayed as you check through a turnstile, or you can just tap it on a vending machine without making a purchase.

To add value to your Suica or Pasmo card, look for a smartcard ticket machines at any railway station.

It’s a quick process but you’ll need to have a few Yen notes on hand (the minimum reload is ¥1,000) as the ticket machines don’t accept credit cards.

Getting a refund on your Suica or Pasmo card

When it’s time to head home, you can get a refund on the balance of your Suica or Pasmo card provided you have conversational Japanese language skills. Yes, there’s always a catch!

Just front up to the station manager’s office at any train station in Tokyo. A ¥210 processing fee will be deducted from your card’s balance but the rest, along with the ¥500 deposit, will be handed back to you in cash.

JR Nara Line: Y690, 45 minutes by express (kaisoku), 70 minutes by local (futsu), departs from JR Kyoto Station in Kyoto and arrives at JR Nara Station in Nara

You’ll most likely start this itinerary at Kintetsu Nara or JR Nara Stations. Either way, get yourself to the fountain just up the stairs from Kintetsu Nara Station to begin this walk.

Walk up Nobori-oji Street. You’ll start to encounter Nara’s famous sacred deer as you go.

Use the underground crossings to get to the northeast corner of the Nobori-oji/Route 169. Walk from there to Isui-en Garden. If you have time, pop into the free and excellent Yoshiki-en next door.

Walk from Isui-en along the backstreets to Todai-ji Temple. Before entering the Daibutsu-den Hall to see the Great Buddha (Daibutsu), walk a little south to check out the Nandai-mon Gate, with its two huge guardian figures.

Enter the Daibutsu-den. Take your time marveling at the Daibutsu and then exit the Daibutsu-den.

Walk along the east wall of the Daibutsu-den and then go up the path that turns up to the right just past the small pond to reach Nigatsu-do Hall.

Check out Nigatsu-do and then walk in the direction of the base of Wakakusa-yama. If you’re traveling at a normal pace, you’ll probably reach this area around lunchtime. See my list of Places To

10:30am: Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum- I suggest heading straight through the Peace Memorial Park to the Peace Memorial Museum because you want to get there as early as possible to avoid the crowds that descend on the museum as the day progresses. Allow about 90 minutes to explore the museum thoroughly.

1:00Pm: Daisho-in Temple- From Itsukushima-jinja, it’s an easy 10-minute walk up to Daisho-in Temple. It’s clearly marked and you can usually just follow the crowds. Take a good hour to explore the temple.

2 PM : Momiji-dani-koen Park- After lunch, follow the small Mitarai-gawa River up into Momiji-dani-koen Park. Mt. Misen via Miyajima Ropeway- Continue up the valley, following the river, to reach the base station of the Miyajima Ropeway. Take the gondola/cable car up to the top station, near the summit of Mt. Misen. Walk from the top station for about 30 minutes to reach the true summit and check out the temples, shrines and views there. From the Niomon Gate down to Daisho-in Temple takes about an hour.

4pm: Finish in the village- If you walk down from Mt. Misen at a leisurely pace, you’ll be back in the village around 4pm. If you’re staying the night on Miyajima, return to your lodgings. Otherwise, head to the piers for a ferry back to the mainland (Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park or Miyajima-guchi and on to Hiroshima).

The Himeji Castle is built in the 17th century where the technology of the original castle construction is said to be at the zenith of Japan technology.

It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993, the very first in Japan. Its elegant finished with white lime plasters had always been compared to the flying white egret (Hakuro). To the locals, it is sometimes also known as the Hakuro Castle. Recently the castle is reopened in 2015 after a 5 and a half years renovation, now it is the time to visit this amazing castle.

The architecture itself is one to marvel with and to be studied closely when one had the chance. Though the entrance fee is quite steep at 1000 yen in 2015. Visiting this castle extensively would easily take half a day.

Direct JR special rapid trains (shin-kaisoku) take 90 minutes and cost 2270 yen for the one way trip between Kyoto and Himeji. There are departures roughly every 15 minutes.

America still has the world's busiest airport

  • New data on the world's busiest airports in 2023 reveals the latest trends in global travel.
  • 8.5 billion passengers traveled by plane last year, almost marking a return to pre-pandemic levels.
  • Airports in Asia and the Middle East became busier, but the US has once again clinched the top spot.

Insider Today

International travel is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, according to the just-released list of the world's busiest airports in 2023.

8.5 billion passengers traveled globally by plane last year — up from 7 billion passengers in 2022 .

The rise in air travel marks a recovery to 93.8% of levels in 2019 before the world shut down, according to preliminary data published by the Airports Council International (ACI), a trade association that includes 2,600 airports worldwide.

Increasing travel to airports in Asia and the Middle East was one of the key trends to emerge from the data, with Dubai International Airport jumping from the fifth to the second busiest airport in the world.

Airports in India, Japan, and Turkey also made it into the top 10 and were some of the biggest movers in terms of annual gains in passenger numbers.

As the world's largest domestic market for flights , US airports still make up five of the busiest airports in the world, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retaining its No. 1 position.

Despite tough global economic conditions, there was "a growing inclination towards travel," Luis Felipe de Oliveira, the ACI's world director general, said in a press release.

"Airports continue to demonstrate their resilience and adaptability amidst the challenges posed by the ever-evolving landscape of global travel," said Oliveira.

Here's a closer look at the top 10 busiest airports in the world.

10. Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, India

india tour to tokyo

Passengers: 72.2 million

2022 ranking: 9th

Delhi's main airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport, saw a 21.4% increase in year-on-year traffic. While it has dropped a place this year, Delhi has grown significantly as a transport hub since 2019, when it sat at number 19 in the rankings.

9. Chicago O’Hare International Airport, USA

india tour to tokyo

Passengers: 73.9 million

2022 ranking: 4th

Travel through Chicago O'Hare jumped by 8.1% throughout 2023. O'Hare is a hub airport for domestic travel, particularly for United and American Airlines flights. It is also a focus city for low-cost rivals Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

8. Los Angeles International Airport, USA

india tour to tokyo

Passengers: 75.1 million

2022 ranking: 6th

Travel through LAX was up 13.8% in 2023, however, compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, passengers at the West Coast airport decreased by 14.8% — the largest decrease of any airport in the top ten rankings. LAX is a hub for a number of carriers, including Alaska Airlines, United, American, and Delta. But domestic travel at the airport shrunk dramatically as airlines cut the number of flights following a series of meltdowns in 2022.

7. Istanbul Airport, Turkey

india tour to tokyo

Passengers: 76 million

2022 ranking: 7th

Passenger numbers at Turkey's Istanbul airport have increased by 18.3%, making it the only transit hub to keep level with its previous ranking in the top 10. Notably, traffic through the airport has jumped by 45.7% since 2019.

6. Denver International Airport, USA

india tour to tokyo

Passengers: 77.8 million

2022 ranking: 3rd

Denver Airport has dropped down several places on the list but still shows strong signs of growth in terms of passengers. In the last year traffic through the Colorado airport was up 12.3%, and it has also grown 12.8% from pre-pandemic levels.

5. Tokyo Haneda International Airport, Japan

india tour to tokyo

Passengers: 78.7 million

2022 ranking: 16th

Japan's Tokyo Haneda Airport saw the largest increase in traffic by far, with passenger numbers surging by 55.1%. Some of that jump can be explained by a lag in tourism as Japan only reopened its borders in late 2022. Despite the jump, Tokyo Haneda is still 7.9% under its 2019 level of traffic. This January the airport made headlines after a fatal collision involving a Japan Airlines plane and a coastguard vehicle killed five people.

4. London Heathrow, UK

india tour to tokyo

Passengers: 79.2 million

2022 ranking: 8th

Travel through the UK's largest airport shot up by 218% in 2022 and has once again made strong gains throughout 2023, jumping by a slightly more modest 28.5%. The airport has credited travel from the Asia-Pacific region as a major factor in its increased passenger numbers. It hopes to supersede its pre-pandemic level of traffic in 2024 and hit a record 81.4 million passengers, the airport said in a report published in December.

3. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, USA

india tour to tokyo

Passengers: 81.8 million

2022 ranking: 2nd

Dallas/Fort Worth airport , known as DFW, is American Airlines' busiest hub and the departure city for many of the airline's international flights. Last year traffic through the airport jumped by 11.4%.

2. Dubai International Airport, UAE

india tour to tokyo

Passengers: 87 million

2022 ranking: 5th

Dubai took the number 2 ranking in the list for the first time, thanks to a significant 31.7% increase in passenger numbers. Dubai's new position reflects the heavy investment that has gone into the aviation industry and boosting tourism in the region.

1. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, USA

india tour to tokyo

Passengers: 104.7 million

2022 ranking: 1st

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport comes in at No. 1 as the busiest airport in the world, a position it has held for more than two decades. In 2023, the Atlanta airport saw an 11.7% increase in passenger numbers.

Here's a look at what it takes to be an air traffic controller at the world's busiest airport.

Road to Paris 2024: Neeraj Chopra and Co. gear up to defend the Indian athletics dream

Neeraj Chopra

Here’s how Indian track and field athletes are placed heading into the Paris Olympics later this year! Know qualification status and other key stats.

Neeraj Chopra ’s historic gold medal win in men’s javelin throw at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics put Indian athletics under the spotlight and the country’s track and field athletes have grown strength to strength since.

With stellar showings at major international meets like the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Athletics Championships, the Diamond League and World Championships over the past couple of years, Indian athletics has put the world on notice.

However, the true litmus test of what has seemed like exponential growth so far will happen at the Paris 2024 Olympics later this year and a good showing at the upcoming Summer Games can establish India as a force in world athletics.

With the qualification window for Paris 2024 at its final stretch, let’s take a look at what to expect from Indian track and field stars in the lead-up to the big test at the banks of the river Seine.

So far, 13 Indian athletes have already breached the qualification standards for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

India’s race walk conundrum, a good one

Interestingly, seven of the 13 have been in the men’s 20km race walk event courtesy Akshdeep Singh, Vikas Singh, Paramjeet Bisht, Suraj Panwar, Servin Sebastian, Arshpreet Singh and Ram Baboo.

However, with a country allowed to field a maximum of three athletes in each event, the Athletics Federation of India faces an interesting predicament in selecting which three will board the flight to Paris come July.

While a trial might be the cards to come up with the shortlist, good performances on the international stage might just help tip the scale.

Suraj Panwar, Ram Baboo, Vikash Singh, Servin S, Arshpreet Singh will be seen competing at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Antalya, Turkiye. The World Athletics Race Walking Tour events till June will also present several opportunities for the contenders to stake claim on the three spots.

That being said, here’s a look at the key stats for all seven in the lead-up to Paris 2024.

Barring Vikas and Paramjeet, the remaining five achieved their personal best timings this year, including Akshdeep’s Singh’s 1:19:38 mark at the Indian Open in Chandigarh, which is the standing national record in the men’s 20km race walk.

Ram Baboo, the men’s 35km race walk national record holder and an Asian Games bronze medallist, also presents an interesting prospect.

India also fielded a full quota of three in men’s race walk at Tokyo 2020 with KT Irfan, Sandeep Kumar and Rahul Rohilla.

In women’s 20km race walk, Priyanka Goswami, meanwhile, looks set to compete in her second Olympics after Tokyo 2020.

Goswami, who holds the Indian national record of 1:28:45 in the event, clocked her season’s best time of 1:29:48 to finish seventh at the Chinese Race Walking Grand Prix in Taicang, the People’s Republic of China, this March.

While it was the third-best mark in her career, it was the best timing for the Indian race walker abroad and achieving it at a World Athletics Race Walking Tour gold label meet will do wonders for her confidence.

With five other World Athletics Race Walking Tour meets, one each in the USA, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Slovakia scheduled between April and May, the Indian athlete may be tempted to take the opportunities to hone her preparations ahead of Paris 2024 on foreign soil.

India’s Bhawna Jat (world No. 54) and Munita Prajapati (53) also have a fighting chance to qualify for Paris 2024 based on rankings. Even if they fail to meet the entry standards before the qualification window for race walk ends on June 30, a bump in rankings can see them break into the 48-woman shortlist.

Headline act: Neeraj Chopra and India’s javelin stars

Needless to say, all eyes will be on Neeraj Chopra defending his crown at Paris 2024.

Since his landmark top podium finish in men’s javelin throw at Tokyo 2020, Neeraj has won the Diamond League trophy in 2022, became the world champion in 2023 and successfully defended his Asian Games crown at Hangzhou.

Chopra confirmed his Olympic title defence by breaching the Paris 2024 entry standard in the qualifying round of the Budapest World Championships last year before creating history in the final, becoming the first senior Indian athletics world champion in history.

Heading into Paris 2024, Neeraj is set to start his Olympic year campaign at the Doha Diamond League on May 10 and his entry in the Paavo Nurmi Games, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold level event in Finland on June 18, has also been confirmed.

With the men’s javelin throw competition at Paris 2024 scheduled in early August, the Paris leg of the Diamond League, on July 7, will give Neeraj the perfect opportunity to test himself against a top-class field and acclimatise before his big title defence.

Team Chopra will pace the Indian javelin thrower before the upcoming Summer Games to avoid any injuries.

Neeraj, whose personal best of 89.94m is the standing Indian national record, will also have breaching the 90m mark on the back of his mind to get the psychological barrier out of the way.

The men’s javelin throw field at Paris 2024 is expected to have multiple members of the 90+ club, including Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of Czechia, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, former world champion Anderson Peters and Germany’s Max Dehning, the latest entrant to the elite group.

Dehning, just 19 years old, became the youngest javelin thrower to breach the coveted 90m mark at the German Winter Throwing Championships in Werferzentrum Brandberge in February. His 90.20m is still the world-leading javelin throw this year.

Joining Neeraj’s quest for gold at Paris will be compatriot Kishore Jena , who gave the reigning world and Olympic champion a run for his money at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year. The Odisha athlete eventually settled for silver and breached the Paris 2024 qualifying mark with a personal best of 87.54m.

Like Neeraj, Jena is also expected to start his season in Doha, which will also be his Diamond League debut. The 28-year-old, who had a personal best of 78.05m after the 2022 season, has shown exponential growth and breached the 80m mark seven times in 2023.

“It's commendable the way Kishore has shown progress, especially at the big stages like the World Championships and Asian Games, and the way he has improved his distance,” Neeraj had gushed about his fellow countryman in a recent interview. “I've been stuck between 88 and 90m since 2018 and the way he is performing, he can breach the 90m mark before me.”

Barring any major incidents, Manu DP is also in line to join Neeraj and Jena at Paris 2024. Manu is yet to breach the qualifying standard of 85.50m in the qualification window but is placed comfortably in the 11th spot in the Road to Paris world rankings, which should be enough to earn him a ticket to Paris.

Like Manu, Annu Rani , ranked 21st in the women’s javelin Road to Paris rankings, is also expected to make the cut and ensure India has at least one athlete in both javelin throw competitions at Paris 2024.

The 31-year-old holds India’s national record of 63.82m but has endured a difficult year and a half. She was unable to breach the 60m mark for almost a year before curbing the trend at the Asian Games last October, where she managed 62.92m to win gold.

Rani hasn’t competed since her Hangzhou high but will need to get some events under her belt to build up momentum ahead of Paris 2024.

The Indian javelin thrower is in Germany’s Leichtathletik Gemeinschaft Offenburg Centre to train under foreign athletics coach Werner Daniels and will be aiming to cross the 65m mark to try and be in medal contention at Paris.

At Tokyo 2020, Australia’s Kelsey-Lee Barber won the bronze medal with a 64.56m while China’s Liu Shiying won the gold with 66.34m. Interestingly, Rani had beaten Shiying (5th) en route to her Asian Games gold at Hangzhou.

With her base in Germany, Rani will have plenty of opportunities to compete in various competitions across Europe and finetune her skills.

Jeswin Aldrin to soften Sreeshankar blow?

Murali Sreeshankar secured a quota for Paris 2024 after breaching the men’s long jump Olympic qualifying standard of 8.27m at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok, Thailand last year. He recorded 8.37m at the meet to claim silver.

However, in a heartbreaking development, Sreeshankar’s 2024 season was cut short due to a knee injury, which ruled him out of the Summer Games.

In Sreeshankar’s absence, Jeswin Aldrin will bear India’s hopes in the men’s long jump. Aldrin holds India’s national record of 8.42m but hasn’t been able to breach the Olympic entry standard since the athletics qualification window came into effect from July 1 last year.

Aldrin, in fact, has struggled for form and hasn’t breached the 8m mark since the qualifying rounds at the Budapest World Athletics Championships in August last year. The Indian long jumper has already competed in four different meets in 2024 and managed a best leap of 7.83m in Belgrade, Serbia so far.

Ranked 24th, Aldrin is still within the top 32 and stands to secure a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics based on world rankings. However, he will need to hold on till the window closes on June 30.

Breaching the entry standard presents a far safer option, and Aldrin can potentially target domestic meets like the four Indian Grand Prix events and the Federation Cup to try and achieve the qualifying mark under familiar conditions.

Indian representation in the women’s long jump, however, seems like a longer shot with Shaili Singh, at world No. 41, outside the cut-off mark of 32. She will also need to add 0.10m to her personal best of 6.76m to meet the Paris 2024 women’s long jump qualifying mark.

Big year for Sable and Parul

Steeplechasers Avinash Sable and Parul Chaudhary are the two other Indian track and field athletes who have already breached the qualifying standards for Paris 2024.

Parul enjoyed a breakthrough season last year and is the reigning Asian champion. She won a silver medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase race at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games while claiming a gold in the 5000m. Parul also reset the national record in her event courtesy a 9:15.31s run at the 2023 Budapest World Championships.

Similarly, Sable established himself as a true star of Indian athletics over the past couple of years.

After a historic silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Sable won the gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou in the 3000m steeplechase and followed it up with a silver in the 5000m. He also holds India’s national record in both events.

Interestingly, though, neither Sable nor Parul has competed in a single steeplechase race this year. Both athletes competed in their respective 10,000m races at The Ten in Florida in March but that has been the only piece of competitive action for either athlete so far this year.

Both Parul and Sable are currently training at a high-altitude centre in Colorado Springs under coach Scott Simmons and it will be interesting to see when they decide to hit the tracks.

Fans can expect to see Sable race in the Diamond League series before Paris 2024 with the Doha, Marrakech, Stockholm and Paris legs all featuring the men’s 3000m steeplechase race.

Parul’s rise over the past year, meanwhile, has been so impressive that Indian track and field legend Anju Bobby George identified the steeplechaser as one to watch out for in Paris.

Besides the ones who have already met the qualifying standards, multiple Indian track and field athletes and teams are in contention to make the cut through rankings.

If the qualifying window ended today, here’s the full list of athletes who would qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics based on their Road to Paris rankings.

* List as of April 20, 2024

Jyoti Yarraji will be one to look out for in the coming months.

The Indian athlete, who won a silver medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year, fell just 0.01 seconds short of the Paris 2024 women’s 100m hurdles entry standard of 12.77 during the World University Games in Chengdu last August.

The mark still stands as the national record in the event and Jyothi needs to rewrite it just one more time before June 30 to meet the Paris mark.

The women’s 4x400m relay team, 17th in the top list, is also just one place below the cut-off mark while the mixed team is four places off. The top 16 in the relay tops list qualify for Paris 2024.
