Travel for Life Pledge: Embracing Sustainable Tourism for a Better Future

The Ministry of Tourism, India, has taken a significant stride towards fostering sustainable and responsible travel practices across the country with the launch of the ‘Travel for Life Pledge’ initiative. This groundbreaking campaign invites all tourism service providers to join hands in promoting eco-friendly, ethical, and community-driven tourism experiences that prioritize the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.

Recognizing the pivotal role tourism plays in the socio-economic development of regions across India, the ‘Travel for Life Pledge’ aims to create awareness and encourage tourism stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices. The initiative emphasizes the need to safeguard the environment, support local communities, and ensure the well-being of both travelers and the destinations they visit.

Tourism service providers, including travel agencies, hotels, homestays, tour operators, guides, and other entities involved in the travel industry, are urged to register and sign up for the ‘Travel for Life Pledge’ on the Ministry of Tourism’s dedicated platform at http://nidhi.tourism.gov.in . This platform serves as a collaborative space for industry players to commit to sustainable tourism practices and access resources, guidance, and support to implement these practices effectively.

By taking the pledge, service providers vow to incorporate principles of sustainability into their operations. This includes minimizing their environmental footprint by conserving resources, reducing waste, and adopting eco-friendly practices. They also pledge to promote cultural sensitivity, respect local traditions, and engage in activities that contribute positively to the communities they serve.

Additionally, the ‘Travel for Life Pledge’ encourages providers to offer authentic and immersive travel experiences that celebrate local culture, heritage, and traditions while fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation among travelers.

The Ministry of Tourism’s initiative aligns with global efforts to promote sustainable tourism outlined in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By embracing sustainable practices, the tourism industry not only contributes to environmental conservation and community development but also ensures the long-term viability of tourism destinations.

Furthermore, the ‘Travel for Life Pledge’ is a proactive step towards building a responsible and resilient tourism ecosystem in India. It empowers stakeholders to be ambassadors for change, encouraging travelers to make informed choices and opt for responsible travel options that positively impact destinations and communities.

As tourism plays an integral role in shaping cultural exchange, economic growth, and environmental conservation, the ‘Travel for Life Pledge’ invites all tourism service providers to join hands in transforming the industry into a force for positive change. It’s a collective commitment towards creating a sustainable and inclusive tourism landscape that benefits both present and future generations.

In conclusion, the Ministry of Tourism’s ‘Travel for Life Pledge’ is a rallying call for tourism service providers to embrace sustainable practices and promote responsible travel. Through this initiative, stakeholders can contribute to preserving India’s natural and cultural heritage while fostering socio-economic development and ensuring the well-being of local communities and ecosystems. Joining the pledge signifies a commitment to a brighter, more sustainable future for Indian tourism.

Lifestyle for Environment - LiFE

Banner

Environmental degradation and climate change are global phenomena where actions in one part of the world impact ecosystems and populations across the globe. Estimates suggest that if requisite action is not taken against the changing environment, approximately 3 billion people globally could experience chronic water scarcity. The global economy could lose up to 18% of GDP by 2050.

Over the last two decades, several macro measures have been implemented globally to address environmental degradation and climate change, including policy reforms, economic incentives and regulations. Despite their enormous potential, actions required at the level of individuals, communities and institutions have received limited attention.

Changing individual and community behaviour alone can make a significant dent in the environmental and climate crises. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), if one billion people out of the global population of eight billion adopt environment-friendly behaviours in their daily lives, global carbon emissions could drop by approximately 20 per cent.

Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi

In this context, the concept of ‘Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Glasgow on 1st November 2021, calling upon the global community of individuals and institutions to drive LiFE as an international mass movement towards “mindful and deliberate utilisation, instead of mindless and destructive consumption” to protect and preserve the environment. LiFE puts individual and collective duty on everyone to live a life that is in tune with Earth and does not harm it. Those who practice such a lifestyle are recognised as Pro Planet People under LiFE.

Changing our lifestyle, however, is not easy. Our habits are deeply ingrained in our daily lives and are continually reinforced through several elements of our environment. Translating our intention to do good for the environment is not always easy to translate into action. However, it is not impossible. By taking one action at a time and making one change daily, we can change our lifestyle and inculcate long-term environment-friendly habits. Studies suggest that practising an action for a minimum of 21 days helps make it a habit.

In that context, the LiFE 21-Day Challenge is launched to enable Indians to take one simple environment-friendly action per day for 21 days and eventually develop an environment-friendly lifestyle. It is a challenge to change one small thing in your life daily and become Pro Planet People.

The Importance Of The UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge

Have you heard of the UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge? This travel pledge promotes sustainable travel through community resilience and heritage conservation. The UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge created in 2019, now has over 4,200 hotels and travel companies who have committed to their ideals. While travel allows you to explore the globe and learn about diverse cultures, if you don’t travel sustainably future generations will not be able to explore the globe in the same ways. The sustainable pledge makes it simple for travel companies to become part of the sustainable change that is desperately needed.  The UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge is free to join and provides a certificate that is perfect for the entire travel industry whether small business or large scale operators. Keep reading to find out more about the importance of the UNESCO Sustainable Travel  Pledge.

The aim of sustainable travel is to leave a light environmental footprint, to support local communities, and to protect the culture and heritage of each area. The travel pledge does just that by encouraging community engagement, energy conservation, water conservation, reducing waste, and reducing the use of single use plastics. The sustainable pledge is a way for travel companies to publicly commit to the actions they can take to protect local cultures and the natural environment surrounding them.

The Five Themes Of The UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge

1. community engagement .

The UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge aims to encourage the communities and cultures in which these travel companies operate to thrive. The sustainable pledge commits participants to support their local communities through sourcing local produce and hiring local workers.

2. Energy Conservation

This theme in the travel pledge helps with the reduction of carbon emissions and aiding in preserving our natural resources. Participants in the pledge lower costs by using energy efficient climate control systems and prioritizing renewable energy.

3. Water Conservation

Water is an invaluable resource in many water-stressed countries world wide. The UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge participants manage this incredible resource by pledging to practice installing water conservation instruments such as low-flow toilets and using rainwater to make their travel businesses more eco-friendly.

4. Waste Reduction

Travel has become high-consumption like much of our society, and waste is becoming an increasingly huge problem. Travel companies who sign the UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge must share their waste reduction policies, including things like better recycling practices and composting food waste.

5. Single-Use Plastic Reduction

There are about 5 trillion single use plastics that are thrown away each year. These plastics end up in our oceans and landfills and take years to decompose. The sustainable pledge travel companies must show their commitment to replacing single use plastics. This can be in the form of toiletries, straws, and any sustainable alternatives.

If you want to change the world, start with yourself. Responsible individual climate action is the key to safeguarding our collective future.

India's per capita carbon footprint is 60% lower than the global average. This is because our lifestyle is still rooted in sustainable traditional practices. In fact, sustainability has always been a part of our tradition, culture and values.

The LiFE movement seeks to transform persons into 'pro-planet people', who would adopt sustainable lifestyles.

Each phase requires a fundamental shift in our approach towards sustainability.
