As a general rule of thumb, it’s always a good idea to take your packing cues from a super hip French girl, like model and muse Caroline de Maigret . She’s spent her life jetting around the globe, both for fun and business, and she pretty much never travels without a pair of simple white sneakers, blue jeans, bathing suit, cashmere sweater, and a long black dress. “It’s important to think that anything can happen, that way anything can happen,” said de Maigret, who recently teamed up with Eres, the go-to swimwear brand for the jetset crowd , on a playful short film titled “Poolside Realness” (directed by Bertrand Le Pluard). Sounds like a simple mantra, but it’s sage advice. Whether you’re invited at the last-minute to a pool party, or you meet a cute guy on the plane, you want to be ready for anything that may come your way when you’re on-the-go. Here, de Maigret shares more expert travel tips, and an exclusive first look at the new short film (watch it below, and you’ll instantly wish you were lounging poolside in an uber chic bathing suit).

What’s your summer vacation destination? I am going on a three week road trip in Sri Lanka. I’m super excited, I have never been.

Favorite off-season destination? The Amalfi Coast.

What’s your favorite hotel in the world? Golden Buddha Beach Resort in Thailand. It’s so tiring and hard to get, that you end up all alone in paradise.

Favorite mode of travel? Train. One day, I’ll take the Orient Express with my man or even the Trans-Siberian railways for a few days, it’s a dream of mine.

Chic! When you fly, do you like to dress up or be comfy for the flight? I’m comfy, yet I stay stylish. I would not wear sweatpants nor a super tight dress.

Best travel shoe? A simple pair of white sneakers

Who is the best or worst person you have ever been seated next to on a plane? One day, I arrived to the plane and the air hostess comes up to me and says, “Miss, you’re going to be happy, I was able to change seats around and your husband will be able to sit next to you. Behind her, a cute guy I had never seen before was standing smiling at me with all his teeth. That was a funny Paris-NYC flight!”

Best freebie you’ve stolen off a plane? I always bring back home the business class bags, the Air France ones are super cute. My son or my nieces are always happy to play with them.

Airline with the best or worst food? Korean Air has great food!

Favorite airport lounge or restaurant? The Barcelona Airport is like a mall so it’s fun to shop there. I love to eat at Laduree in the Parisian airports, I always order the cheese croque-monsieur, they’re amazing.

What’s one thing that always saves you when traveling? Sleeping pills on the plane. It’s the only way for me to be ok wherever I go and avoid jetlag.

Favorite piece of travel advice you have ever received? Wear compression/support stockings on long flights like the air hostess, it changes everything.

What’s a big packing mistake to avoid? It’s important to think that anything can happen, that way anything can happen. Always pack something dressy, a bathing suit and a warm sweater, you never know!

Name five essential pieces of clothing/accessories you can’t travel without: A pair of blue jeans, white simple sneakers, a bathing suit, a cashmere sweater, and a long black dress.

What swimwear brand is always in your suitcase? Eres.

Best beauty products for travel? Lancome Nutrix moisturizer that I put on during the whole flight and lip balm from La Roche-Posay.

Best souvenir from a trip? My boyfriend.

“ To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world .”

Freya Stark, Explorer and Travel Writer.

Agreed, Freya. I love exploring new towns, big or small. I love traveling alone too. Wait. Alone? If I am fine traveling by myself, I still like to be in good company. I would not leave home without my travel essentials. Spring is here, and before we know it, the summer travel season will be upon us. Every time I check social media, I see articles titled “10 versatile travel essentials you can’t do without,” “How to pack for an international trip,” or “Travel light and pack smart.” I don’t know about you, but I remember to bring a color copy of my passport, wall adapters, ear plugs, or a phrase book. I know my clothing will take less space if I roll it instead of folding it. I know packing cubes and zip lock bags will help me organize my suitcase and save time. I remember to pack travel essentials, jewelry, and medication in my carry-on. This story is a not your typical list. I am not claiming I know packing better than you do. Like choosing a hotel and a restaurant, packing is a personal decision. What works for me might not work for you, and vice versa. Still, as I was reading my 3rd travel-related article this week, I paused to reflect on what my ideal travel checklist would be. It did not take long.  Voilà  French Girl in Seattle’s travel essentials, my favorite travel companions, my sidekicks, my compadres. We are a team. Where I go, they go.

1. Travel Essentials: Panasonic Lumix Lx 7 and MacBook Air 11 in.

Sidekicks

I don’t recall a trip over the last 7 years these two have not been on. There would be no blog and no travel stories without them. I am not a photographer, but I enjoy telling stories, with words and photos. The Lumix LX 7 ( and its predecessor the worthy Lumix LX 5) have enabled me to do just that. Portable and sturdy, infallible when set on automatic, but flexible enough to let you play with manual settings; the Lumix LX 7 is a smart camera that also delivers top quality video footage, even in low light conditions. It is unobtrusive and quiet. This makes it perfect for street photography (my favorite activity because I love people watching.)

Lumix LX 7 2

The Lumix’s partner, the MacBook Air , is the essential piece of equipment I rely on to write stories. I can check my emails on a smartphone, but I need a real keyboard for blogging. The MacBook Air is lightweight, lightning fast, and so beautiful it pleases my French sense of aesthetics. Yes, blogging has turned me into a WiFi addict. I won’t deny it. Fortunately, my favorite travel destinations are cities. It’s never a big problem nowadays to get connected at least once a day.

2. Travel Essentials: Le carnet (the notebook.)

WiFi addict or not, I am old-fashioned. I like beautiful pens, real books, quality paper and would not dream of embarking on a trip without a favorite notebook. I use it to list places I want to discover, a hotel or rental apartment address, stores I plan to visit, or exhibits I must see. I use it as a travel journal, or to store souvenirs, the ticket that got me into a great museum, a business card I picked up along the way. The notebook needs to be small and to fit into whatever bag I carry on my daily explorations. It helps me plan my trip, but also gets me in the mood for travel. After I return home, flipping through the pages brings back memories of special adventures. If I had it my way, I would take notes, or write postcards (yes, I still send them when I can find them,) with this:

Porte plume

Porte-plume: What I used to learn cursives in elementary school

Instead, I pack a couple of cheap pens (pens tend to get lost on long trips,) a highlighter, and the notebook, of course.

3. Travel essentials: Guidebooks

I believe in {heavily highlighted} guidebooks, with special pages folded over in the corners. Trip planning may involve hours of web browsing, but when it comes to the actual trip, I like to have a guidebook. Michelin is my most reliable supplier.  It delivers reliable, concise, no-nonsense information. I would not dream of staying in Paris (or in any big city) without researching a few itineraries first. My copy of the invaluable “ Paris Pratique par Arrondissement ” (already my sidekick when I was a Paris resident,) may not be the prettiest. It is covered with inscriptions, with highlighted sections of arrondissements  (districts) and landmarks. It’s the best travel companion I have had in the French capital’s streets for many, many years.

4. Travel essentials: Good shoes. A good coat. A good scarf (or two.)

Travelers spend way too much time obsessing over what to wear on a trip. It seems that when Paris (and France) are concerned, {female} travelers’ stress levels sky-rocket. Their goal? To blend in. Hint: They won’t. Parisians can spot tourists a mile away, even if visitors wear black clothes and scarves (tied more or less successfully.) How? Tourists walk more slowly than locals. They take photos constantly. They look – and sound – different. Sometimes, they try too hard. You see, unlike what some popular lifestyle books would have you believe, Parisians – Parisian women in particular – come in many different colors, shapes, and sizes. This applies to the rest of the country as well. This makes “blending in” challenging, don’t you think? You are a tourist: Own it. Dress comfortably, using common sense, and {good} taste. Be respectful. No one can ask for more than that.

When I travel, in the U.S. or across Europe, I rely on three travel essentials: First, comfortable shoes. My feet and the local public transportation system help me get around, Clarks  and  Ecco  being my brands of choice for leather shoes and sandals. Now that sneakers (especially cute leather sneakers) are trendy in Paris, things are a lot easier. I would trade  Repetto ballet flats for a pair of Converse, Adidas, or Ecco leather sneakers in a heartbeat before I walk around Paris, New York or Toulouse for a day!

Converse

One of my many pairs of Converse, purchased in NYC after days of walking in traditional shoes made me beg for mercy.

Second: A good coat. My traveling is mostly done in urban areas. I vote for the classic, low maintenance, stylish trench coat in mid-season (in beige or light colors) as well as in the winter (when black works best,) and the denim jacket in the summer. My latest trench coat came from a favorite supplier, le Comptoir des Cotonniers , in the traditional Sahara color.

prom dresses

Few women look as Parisian as Charlotte Gainsbourg in her Comptoir des Cotonniers trench coat!

Third: A good scarf. When working or traveling, I wear them daily; and have learned to tie them in many different ways. Scarves are easy to pack and accessorize any outfit in a heartbeat. They keep you warm when it gets chilly, especially during long international flights. You can use them to sit on when having a picnic outside. Scarves are très French; that, at least, is not a myth (but you will see them all over Europe.)

5. Travel essential: A great bag to carry it all.

Diamonds – or shoes – aren’t a girl’s best friends. As far as I am concerned, bags are. Travel bags, handbags, carry-ons. I won’t lie: I have owned many bags, though I have recently downsized and started investing in quality pieces by Lancel, Longchamp, or Kate Spade. While traveling, I prefer cross-body bags or small, stylish backpacks as day packs. Why? I like to keep my hands free to take photos and notes. I have been traveling between Europe and the United States at least once a year for over 20 years. My search for the perfect carry-on bag continues. It goes from the airplane to business meetings, while my day-pack of choice typically travels flat in the suitcase, only to be “freed” once I reach my destination.  This past year, I have loved my adventures with Lo and Son’s O.M.G. bag. This is one of the best carry-on bags out there in my opinion! It is so pretty, versatile, and fits all of my other sidekicks, listed above, and more (watch the video on the website.) The O.M.G. has a big brother, the O.G. The company has come up with a really cool visual to help you decide between the two. Check it out here . Note: These bags aren’t cheap. Lo and Sons is running a sale for Mother’s Day until May 8! (I am not getting a commission for mentioning this bag. I just love my purple O.M.G.)

OMG

The O.M.G. bag and the other (usual) sidekicks were in Paris with me over the Holidays.

So here you are. These are French Girl in Seattle’s 5 travel essentials. Writing this post was almost as much fun as actually traveling. Hope you have enjoyed it too!

10 French Fashion Essentials You Need in Your Wardrobe

Ariana Quihuiz has been a contributing writer for InStyle since 2023. Her work has also appeared on Brides, PEOPLE, and E! Online.

You don’t have to live in Europe to nail the French girl aesthetic . Characterized by basic staples, like button-down shirts and blazers (plus a few statement accessories), this way of dressing is timeless and extremely versatile. It’s all about investing in pieces that feel relaxed but can just as easily be dressed up for a more elevated look.

With the hashtag #frenchgirlstyle having over 95 million views on TikTok, it’s clear women everywhere are looking to upgrade their wardrobes. But that’s easier said than done, especially if you’re aiming to buy items that can be worn year-round. The goal is to buy clothes and accessories that can be mixed and matched to help extend their wear time. Luckily, Parisian-inspired fashion relies on classic silhouettes and neutral hues for pieces that can be used to create a variety of effortlessly chic looks.

While there are plenty of French-inspired items to choose from, these are the 10 timeless essentials you need to add to your wardrobe ASAP.

Ballet Flats

Ballet flats are the ultimate French fashion staple, but they’re also trending. Spotted on the Spring 2024 runways for brands like Sandy Liang and Simone Rocha, a ballet flat is a timeless addition to any wardrobe. They go with everything and are super comfortable to walk in, whether you’re in the streets of Paris or Los Angeles. For maximum wear, opt for a simple pair in a black or beige hue.

A Trench Coat

A beige trench coat immediately elevates any look and can be worn for all seasons. To style it the Parisian way, keep your outfit underneath very minimal and stick to neutral tones. For an everyday look, opt for a white T-shirt and jeans. Heading out on the town? Consider pairing your trench coat with a black midi dress and simple heels.

A White Button-Down Shirt

Daniel Zuchnik/Getty Images

There’s no fashion item quite as versatile as a white button-down shirt. While it’s considered a French-girl staple, it’s also a foundational piece in any capsule wardrobe. Model Gigi Hadid has worn an oversized version of the look, but you can easily style the shirt to fit your mood. Wear a white button-down over a T-shirt for a classic take on the look, or choose a fitted white button-down that is tied in the front for something with a bit more edge to it.

An Oversized Blazer

All it takes is throwing on an oversized blazer to look effortlessly put together and chic. Baggy silhouettes are currently on-trend, but an oversized blazer also has a sophisticated quality to it that is perfect for crafting a French girl aesthetic. It feels elegant when paired with a midi skirt or dress but can also add some oomph to a classic sweater and sneakers combination.

Straight-Leg Jeans

Christian Vierig/Getty Images

Straight-leg jeans will never go out of style, which is likely why French women love them so much. With a slightly loose fit, this denim style is comfortable to wear and a no-fuss option for any occasion. If the classic silhouette feels too simple for you, spice up the look with a crossover waistband or a cropped hem.

A Striped Top

It wouldn’t be a French essentials list without a striped top, or as the locals call it, the “la marinière top.” This nautical-inspired shirt typically features blue-and-white stripes but can be worn in a variety of other colors. Throw this on with a pair of jeans, a blazer, and some loafers for a casual yet elegant look.

A Silk Scarf

Trade your beret for a silk scarf if you really want to nail a French-inspired look. This accessory adds elegance to any outfit but can also be considered a statement piece when worn in a bold pattern.

The traditional way to wear a silk scarf is tied around your neck, but for more intriguing styling options, try tying the scarf in your hair or wearing it as a chic belt.

A Little Black Dress

Convenience is a key factor in French girl fashion, and a little black dress can be worn for every occasion, from a job interview to a fancy dinner party. Iconic French designer Coco Chanel popularized the LBD way back in the 1920s, and it’s still just as relevant today. You can dress it up with pumps and a few necklaces or keep it simple with platform sneakers and a sweater.

A Cozy Sweater

A soft, warm sweater makes for a relaxed look that is guaranteed to be a top-five item in your fall-to-spring wardrobe. It can be layered over a T-shirt or, better yet, tied around the shoulders to be tossed on later for a preppy look done right. A cable knit cardigan is also another great option to balance out wide-leg jeans and add some texture to your outfit.

A Straw Bag

French women love a shoulder bag, but if we’re talking spring and summer accessories, there’s no other choice but the straw bag. Jane Birkin embodied French girl style, and it was the iconic wicker basket that she carried throughout the 1960s that popularized the use of straw bags. While her bag of choice was a basket, this purse comes in a variety of styles, from a handle bag to a large tote to suit a formal or casual event.

The Ultimate French Girl Style Guide

Style , Style Guides , Where To Shop

A huge trend (one that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere) is French girl style. From really classic, chic looks to designer pieces, French style clothing is huge for a reason.

Today, we’re diving into French girl style to tell you everything you need to know!

So, What Is French Style?

French-style is not just a category or a genre – it’s a lifestyle.

There’s no way to fake French style. Without completely embodying the principles of French fashion, one is simply following a fad.

Don’t worry – you don’t have to forget all about your personal taste. The rule book that the French use doesn’t aim to restrict you from other styles but to improve it in every little way.

Want to know more about French style clothing? Let’s hop in!

A Quick History of French Style Clothing:

French girl style and French style

Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior. Familiar, right? We may think they invented “French style” and all the values behind it but there’s actually more to it than that. While they influenced the industry in a very peculiar and inducing way, the real influence can be traced back as far as the 17th century.

During the 17th century, Louis XIV, the “Sun King,” introduced France to the fabric and textile trade. He was known to be very particular in terms of quality, always making sure they provided only the best materials. His elegant and extravagant taste also prompted the rest of France to follow suit, especially those in influential positions.

In the 18th century, haute couture was born. That time gave rise to notable designers in the industry, including Charles Frederick Worth, Jaques Doucet, and Madeleine Vionnet. Fittings for wealthy clients also became a norm.

Coco Chanel came into the picture in the 20th century, bringing in modern, casual, and unconventional silhouettes. She introduced the “effortlessly chic” style that opposed the conventional use of corsets. Coco Chanel is also known for using only the best quality materials, which is another one of the reasons that French style clothing today is all about quality.

Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and other designers in their batch came in post-war, introducing even more modern clothing – from cocktail dresses, mini skirts, and classic tuxedo suits for women.

All this contributed to how French women dress today.

What Makes French Style Clothing Unique?

Coco Chanel

The epitome of French style doesn’t hide natural beauty. Coco Chanel once said, “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.”

If you want to embody French style, you first have to be confident in your own skin. Accepting and acknowledging yourself, both mind and body can open doors for you to realize your personal style. French girls don’t hide behind anything! Instead, natural beauty is emphasized through clean lines.

Fashion can change over the years, but style endures. You can see it in how most French girls dress. They may ride the trends, but they always leave a classic element in their outfits. It’s all about balance!

The French Girl Style Rulebook

Here are some takeaways from our favorite French girl style influencers.

Balance classic and trendy pieces:

There’s nothing wrong with riding the trend. But if it covers or hides your character, it is bound for the trash in no time. It is also important to note that following trends may not be for everyone. For instance, baggy clothes may not compliment a pear-shaped body as much as a cropped silhouette.

There are limits to “statement pieces:”

Statement pieces are meant to break the ice. If you wear more than two accents, visual noise can be very evident and excessive which may tend to be an “eyesore”. When dressing with prints and bold colors, try to minimize or find a way to harmonize them. Too much of a good thing can go bonkers.

Invest in quality and versatile pieces:

Before you buy anything, think hard about it! Impulse buying is a no-no for French women, even if you can afford to do so. Investing in quality pieces can last you a very long time (some may even be passed on to be inherited) which can also possibly decrease your carbon footprint.

Utilize the art of layering:

Layering is an important factor in creating silhouettes. It’s almost like a work of art. Layering can give basic pieces in your wardrobe several alter-egos and lives – which makes the investment even more worth it! Play with texture, color, fabric, and style – the possibilities are limitless.

Do not compromise comfort (too much):

French women normally do not sacrifice comfort too much for style. It’s in their blood to appear nonchalant and graceful wherever they go. If a piece or a pair of shoes make you uncomfortable, then you might have to drop it.

Do not appear sloppy:

French women always look smart, whatever their fashion taste. Appearing sloppy is the least of their goals. If you want to wear something baggy or bulky, try to balance it out with a tailored piece to avoid looking “undone.”

Try to keep it minimal but memorable:

Minimalism is a classic principle in French style clothing. Despite this, it is still quite important to add a personal element that you can easily be remembered. This is particularly helpful when you attend a social event. Wearing a black dress? Add one or two distinguishable accessories, like a pair of diamond earrings or a sparkling necklace.

Lean into neutral colors:

French style clothing generally leans on neutral colors because of its versatility, subtleness, and timelessness. Understated neutrals like blue, navy, gray, tan, black, and white are great fabric investments — mainly because basic pieces in these colors are likely to be repeated without being noticed.

Vintage is good:

High-quality doesn’t always have to be expensive. Hitting the vintage stores can find you great deals – especially limited and rare designer pieces. Uniqueness doesn’t fail to put you in the spotlight!

Wear color, but don’t overdo it:

Just like statement pieces, wearing color should be limited. If you want to color block, make sure they complement and contrast each other. Thinking in terms of black and white can help you pick out the right colors.

Flashy logos are no-no’s:

If French women have pet peeves, it is seeing a big flashy logo on any designer piece. To look elegant, keep it subtle, small, and seamless. Trying to look rich by showing off your wealth can only put off others.

Wear something that fits you perfectly:

Your clothes should not be too tight or too big. The length of your clothes should be perfect for your height as well. Basically, you want your clothes to be well-tailored; not too loose, not too tight.

Find your own style:

Above all, finding your personal taste and growing around it is important. Despite all the principles in the rule book, French women are known for being unconventional and eccentric. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

When in doubt, wear black:

Black is classy, sophisticated, and elegant, however you put it. It’s quite simple and straightforward, but it doesn’t fail to catch glances. Plus, black looks good on everyone – regardless of skin tone. Black has also certain properties that can make you appear slim and tailored.

French Style Wardrobe Essentials

Here are some of the type French girl style pieces that every French woman is likely to own!

1. LBD or Little Black Dress

An LBD or a “Little Black Dress” is an ultimate must-have regardless of your personal style.

When French women pack for travel, they make sure to bring one LBD to wear on surprise occasions. A black dress on hand can also save you from decision fatigue, especially if you’re rushing about. It’s a classic French style clothing piece because it’s always useful and can be dressed up or down.

2. White Tee

White tees are versatile, sustainable, and sophisticated.

When you look for a white tee, invest in something made with the best quality fabric because you are most likely to wear that a lot.

In the summer, you can wear it as a tie top paired with a midi skirt. During the cold months, you can use it as a base layer for vests and coats. You can also cut it down into a crop top if that’s what you prefer.

3. White Button-Down Shirt

A white button-down shirt is a classic staple in a French woman’s closet, almost like the LBD. It’s easy to mix and match and pair with various layerings. A white button-down can also easily be put on as is. Can be used for both formal and casual outings.

4. Camisole

Surprisingly, for French women, a Camisole is part of their outfits quite often. One with exceptional quality can be worn under a cardigan, coat, or blazer. For some, a camisole can be worn as a casual everyday item paired with blue or black jeans.

5. Mariniere Top

This striped white and blue top originated from Bretagne marines in the North of France. Eventually, this historic staple reached and stayed with the fashion industry – inspiring waves of styles. A Mariniere top can easily be paired with any basic pieces like jeans, trousers, blazers, and coats.

6. Straight Leg Jeans

Straight-leg jeans are classic, neutral, and timeless. They transcended trends over the years – never losing their shine along the way. So of course, pair of straight-leg jeans are a good investment. They pair with almost everything and can be worn again and again, especially if you invest in a quality pair.

7. Tailored Blazer

A tailored blazer is no longer limited as an office-related piece. It can now be used in casual outings or paired with something unconventional and unique, such as a hoodie.

A tailored blazer can also balance and elevate undone outfits. Any blazer in plaid, khaki, navy blue, or black is a great go-to.

8. Trench Coat

A trench coat is a staple in French fashion. It is usually worn over a Mariniere top or a buttondown top or a during early spring, fall, and winter months. A trench coat is a perfect addition to a layered fit. To heighten your look, you can wear heels or knee-high/ankle boots.

9. Cardigan

A cardigan is a fall staple for French women. It gives of a softer, feminine look compared to tailored cover-ups such as trench coats, blazers, and jackets. It also makes a great layering element to balance out masculine-forward outfits.

10. Loafers

Loafers are particularly popular in France because of streets made of cobblestone. To keep a formal get-up without compromising comfort, the French usually choose a pair of loafers to go with their outfits.

Loafers can be used for both formal and casual fits, which makes a pair of these a good option for transitional outfits.

11. Black Stilettos

Black stilettos come in handy when attending formal occasions, parties, and other social events. The key rule when picking a pair of heels to wear is making sure you can walk in them comfortably.

Just like the LBD, black stilettos are a classic pair of shoes for your French girl style closet.

12. Leather Pouch or Handbag

Because French women dress minimally, they try to back it up with a nice statement pouch or handbag. Good quality designer bags can complete your outfit without much effort.

When investing in a designer bag, try looking for something timeless and subtle. Flashy logos are no-nos!

13. Black Jeans

Seamless, timeless, and easy to pair, a pair of black jeans can get you a long way.

For a casual, edgy look, style it with a white tee and a black leather jacket. For a laid-back look, you can wear it with a sweatshirt. To add a sexy twist to your outfit, just switch your flats to a pair of stilettos or heeled boots.

14. Blue Denim Jeans

A pair of blue denim jeans is a classic sporty-chic staple. Unlike black, it gives an impression of nonchalance and uniqueness. It can even be the statement piece of an outfit itself. Styling them without looking overly dressed can be a challenge, but once you learn how to harmonize fabric types, your pair of blue denim jeans can surely take on a lot!

15. Canadian Tuxedo (Denim Jacket)

A denim jacket gives off casual, tailored, and masculine vibes which make it a nice cover-up for dresses and Avante Garde ensembles. It complements any outfit as easily as a pair of denim jeans can. And just like its bottom counterpart, a denim jacket can be worn as an accent without looking too flashy.

French girl style and French style

16. Leather Jacket

A leather jacket is a recipe for an edgy-chic look. Plus, it’s easy to pull off – you simply have to wear it over a basic ensemble, like a white tee and a pair of black jeans. For a casual outing, wear ankle boots or loafers. You can always switch it up if the event calls for a pair of heels.

17. Knee High Boots

Knee-high boots can make an outfit look sexy and mysterious. I love how the silhouette of an outfit change with a pair of these. If you want to elevate a night outfit, you can wear knee-high boots in exchange for usual stilettos. Just make sure you don’t look bulky! Remember to balance the elements as always.

french girl travel essentials

18. Ankle Boots

Ankle boots are chic and stylish but not too flashy. They are almost equivalent to a pair of loafers, except that they’re more versatile to a variety of styles.

Because they’re not that bulky or flashy, ankle boots are less likely to overpower other elements in your outfit. These are an essential French girl style piece for the colder months!

A silk scarf can be used in many different ways. A neck accent, a bandana, or a bag accessory. It is basically a “feminine” piece that can give your outfit character and personality – like art. Silk scarves are usually sold in various artistic designs.

20. Knit Vest

A knit vest is a great layering element that you can add to a basic ensemble. Like a silk scarf, a knit vest proves to be a decent statement piece to your outfit. Style it with a turtle neck long-sleeved blouse, a leather midi skirt, and ankle boots. To keep it “French”, only pick out vests in earthy and neutral colors like olive green, navy blue, beige, cream, and black.

Final Thoughts

Being French in a stylish sense doesn’t always mean splurging and limiting yourself to expensive items. It is mostly about finding clothes, shoes, and accessories that are sure to last for years. French women also tend to stray away from fast fashion trends. For a French woman, being eccentric means staying timeless, simple, and elegant.

The French Spring Capsule Wardrobe

french spring capsule wardrobe

Spring is finally here, and it’s time to update your wardrobe with some fresh and chic styles! However, since spring is a transitional season, it can be challenging to figure out what outfits to wear. Whether you’re looking to revamp your entire spring wardrobe or just add a few new pieces to your collection, I’m here to help ;). Indeed, in today’s post, I’ve put together a French spring capsule wardrobe consisting of a few essential pieces that are versatile enough to mix and match for both casual and elevated looks.

For this year’s capsule wardrobe, I decided to switch things up and go for a more neutral color scheme, opting for beiges and whites instead of my usual black, navy blue, and stripes. These colors are perfect for creating effortlessly chic and soft looks that are less “strict” than black or navy blue. The white shades complement a variety of colors (think red, camel, brown, grey, or light blue), making them a versatile choice for any outfit. I drew inspiration from the latest Paris Fashion Week street style FW24 , which showcased many cream and camel looks. As a result, you can expect to see a lot of whites in this year’s spring capsule! I hope you’ll love it.

PS: I recently realized that I tend to wear only a few pieces from my wardrobe each season, so I have decided to narrow down the usual 24-item French capsule wardrobe to only about ten pieces. My goal is not only to help you create a stylish capsule wardrobe but also to provide you with fashion inspiration on how to wear the clothes you already own and provide guidance on the latest trends. Bon shopping!

I carefully select and personally love every product featured on Leonce Chenal. If you buy through my links, I may earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. Merci for your support <3

Bonjour! I’m Léonce, the editor of Leonce Chenal, a website dedicated to French style, beauty, and much more. I’m French and originally from a small town near Annecy. I started Leonce Chenal in 2018 to fulfill my passion for fashion and beauty while I was working as a data analyst in London. After living in Paris for a few years, I now reside in Amsterdam. I hope this space brings you the inspiration you need and infuses your life with a touch of joie de vivre. Merci for visiting! À bientôt, xo.

Absolutely love this capsule wardrobe , chic and practical. Definitely a lot of inspiration. Do you also include jewelry in your capsule wardrobe?

Bonjour Tatiana! Thank you for your comment 🙂 I haven’t included jewelry in this capsule wardrobe but I’ll create a jewelry selection (necklaces, rings, and earrings) for spring in another post. xo

I truly love this collection of how to look my best in a French way. Love Paris and everything about it. Probably why New Orleans is my home. As close as I can get. Thank you. Micheline

Merci beaucoup Micheline <3

Hi!I love your blog, Great work!are you planning to do a 2022 version of this post?it would be awesome to have your advice about the collections of this year! Hugs from Italy

Bonjour Melissa, thank you very much for your comment! Yes sure, I’ll update this post for Spring 2022! It’s on my to-do list 🙂 Have a lovely day, xo

I love this! Will you be posting a few outfit ideas with these pieces as well? Similar to the winter?

Bonjour Ellen, thank you very much for your comment! Yes, I’ll try to add outfit ideas with these pieces, similar to what I’ve done with the winter capsule wardrobe 🙂 xo

I love the capsules you create. It amazes me how many similar items I already own, but I appreciate that you put them together in ways I hadn’t thought of. Thank you 🙂

Bonjour Elana, thank you very much for your comment! I’m really glad to hear that you love the capsules :)) I’ll create more of them in the future! Merci <3

Bonjour Leonce, I love hearing from you in Australia. I would love to see a wardrobe for casual clothes suitable for our hot weather and suitable for cruising. Merci Lynette

Bonjour Lynette, thank you so much for your lovely message from Australia! I love the idea of a chic casual capsule wardrobe for hot weather. It’s definitely something I plan to write about in the coming weeks. Keep an eye out for it, and I hope it will provide some inspiration for your wardrobe. Merci, for the great suggestion! xo

I love your column beautiful French clothes , I would love to visit Paris one day. I love everything French. Thank you for the lovely clothes I love getting inspiration for Spring and Summer. Janette x

Thank you, Janette! I’m so glad you love the French clothes and find inspiration in my columns. I hope you get to visit Paris one day and experience everything you love about France in person. Thanks for your kind words! xo

You’ve selected some lovely pieces, a nice change from the usual color palette. I wonder, however, how this particular blouse would fit under the jackets recommended considering the fullness of the sleeves and the fabric weight of the blouse. ???

Bonjour Cindy, thank you for your kind words! The blouse in question is made of cotton poplin, which is great for layering. For oversized shirts like this, I typically opt for a size down to ensure they fit comfortably under a blazer. I hope you find this tip useful :)!

10 French Summer Wardrobe Essentials

10 French summer wardrobe essentials

As a Francophile, I love bringing elements of the French style into my wardrobe. The French girl style continues to evolve as fashion styles change. Classic pieces with neutral colors are essential for French women to mix and match their wardrobes throughout the summer season. To get a sense of what Parisian women are wearing, you can sit at a café and make notes of style trends or walk the streets of Paris. It is one of my favorite activities to do in Paris. This post is all about 10 French summer wardrobe essentials I have observed from my travels to Paris over the years.

Wide Leg Trousers

Wide-leg trousers were not on my radar, and I wasn’t embracing the trend for my wardrobe until I tried them on. I love them and have worn them several times since buying two pairs on my last trip to Paris. I have been all about skinny jeans for years, so this feels out of my comfort zone. Try the trend and see what you think of them.

It has been a debate recently if you can wear shorts in Paris. The summer months in Paris and France can be pretty warm. Shorts are very trendy right now with French girls. There is a tasteful way to do it with still looking pulled together. I recently ordered  these Rome shorts , which can be paired with a T-shirt, crisp button-down, and sandals.

Crisp White Button Down Shirt

A crisp white button-down is a classic style piece that is perfect year-round. In the colder months, you can use it as a great layering piece under a sweater. For summer, pair it with shorts, wide-leg pants, or jeans. You will feel instantly pulled together. For an evening look, dress it up with a pair of ballet flats or strappy sandals and red lips.

French Girl Wardrobe Essentials: Red Lip

You will notice a red lip more in the evenings and on the weekends with Parisians. Feel free to do whatever makes you happy with your style. Some of my favorite lipstick brands include Sisley, which has a moisturizing formula that keeps my lips hydrated, Supergoop just launched an SPF lip color which has been a lot of fun, and I am wearing Lucky Me a lot. Also,  Merit has Aperatif   for a classic French red they claim looks good on everyone. I just ordered it to test it out.

T-shirts can be so hard to find. After buying inexpensive t-shirts year after year, I finally started spending more on better quality that lasted more than a season. This white tee is a favorite of mine. I layer classic T-shirts under sweaters or a jacket or just with a pair of jeans. It is a classic look but one of my favorites in the summer months. I will even throw on a pair of denim shorts with them in the warmer months. My drawers have multiples in black and white because it feels like I wear them almost daily.

Summer Essentials: Sundress

Sundresses are a perfect summer wardrobe piece. A white linen dress is great on a hot summer day or during heat waves to keep cool and feel pulled together. I love floral prints and a good polka dot dress in my closet for date night or vacation. My suitcase will be filled with dresses for our trip to Italy next month. It will be hard time to narrow down all the options. I keep buying more dresses because I love the current dress styles.

french wardrobe essentials

Sun protection is always top of mind for me; it is the essential summer. I recently purchased this foldable hat from Tuckernuck that I can’t wait to wear in Italy.

French Girl Wardrobe Essentials: Espadrilles

Espadrilles are as classic as they come for French girl summer style. Choose a flat pair or wedge pair depending on your preference. I love these wedge espadrilles that I purchased in Paris earlier this year. I have had several over the years, and these are one of my favorites, and I know I will have them for years to come. They are easy to tie around the ankle and a fun addition to my wardrobe.

French Basket Bag

a birthday in Paris everyday parisian

A basket bag or straw tote is an essential piece for French fashion.  I picked up a larger basket bag at Sézane  that I love carrying for picnics and to the market. Smaller versions of the straw bag can be brought to the beach or a night out.

french girl travel essentials

Strappy sandals that are flat or sandals with low heels are great for wearing with summer dresses. I tend to stick with neutral color palettes of black, brown, and occasionally metallic gold for chic summer outfits.

Sunglasses of all shapes are classic wardrobe staples. This is a fun way to accessorize your outfit or add a pop of color. I love wearing  classic round sunglasses  or Raybans as part of my summer wardrobe. Sunscreen is also essential in the summer for added sun protection.

Little Black Dress

Now that life feels back to normal. There are more impromptu invites and parties on my summer schedule. This is where the little black dress or white dress comes in handy. I like to have one for the winter/fall months and one for summer that is always pressed and ready to go in my closet. For shoes, pair with espadrilles or flat strappy sandals.

Leather Jacket or Denim Jacket

french girl travel essentials

A leather or denim jacket is never a bad idea for cooler evenings. Throw over your summer dresses or white blouses to keep warm on cooler days. You can pair black ballet flats with a leather jacket.

The 17-Piece Wardrobe All the French Girls Will Wear in 2023

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674665972608-main

After a year of flashy outfits , endless travel, and a go-go-go mentality, I’ve decided to take it easy in 2023. And for me, that means taking a break from my endless supply of statement pieces and starting the year with a capsule wardrobe that will help me resolve my extremely overstuffed closet space. Now, who might be the perfect group to look to for capsule wardrobe inspiration? The answer is, of course, French girls .

No one serves effortless style inspiration better. I decided to spend a few hours this morning scrolling through my favorite  Parisian and French women’s Instagram feeds to find out what items I should include in my capsule closet. The answers just might surprise you. Below, find the 17 things I’m convinced I need to complete that capsule wardrobe of mine.

1. Tailored Wool Coat

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674663405739-image

A forever favorite for the Parisian, a tailored wool coat is an item you simply can't skip. Bonus points if you buy it in navy.

Mango + Fitted Handmade Wool

2. Shearling Jacket

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674663882336-main

Parisians follow trends too, especially when they're as cozy as shearling. Layer up in this transitional outerwear piece.

Halfboy + Cropped Shearling Jacket

3. Tailored Maxi Skirt

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674663546317-image

Maxi skirts are all over the runways, and Parisians have already been wearing them. The tailored styles have my heart.

Reformation + Gia Skirt

4. Denim Maxi Skirt

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674663695802-image

Speaking of maxi skirts, if you're into this trend, you have to try it the denim iteration. It's such a polished upgrade to blue jeans.

We the Free + Come as You Are Denim Maxi Skirt

5. White Button-Down Shirt

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674663965536-image

Another item that's a shoo-in for a capsule wardrobe is a white button-down. If anyone knows how to style them, it's French girls.

Good American + Button Down 2.0 Shirt

6. Vacation-Ready Hats

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674664064777-image

When French girls go on vacation, they do it right. I've seen so many of them on trips with a wide-brim hat in Jane Birkin fashion.

Lack of Color + The Spencer Wide Fedora

7. Retro Sneakers

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674664174538-image

There was a time when French girls laughed at Americans who traveled to France wearing sneakers, but now they're just like us, but the French prefer styles that are retro and polished.

Rag & Bone + Retro Sneaker

8. Knit Vests

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674664403349-image

French girls have not moved on from knit vests, and neither have I. As spring inches closer and closer, it is the perfect piece to layer with.

Dôen + Aniene Fair Isle Recycled Cashmere and Wool-Blend Vest

9. Sheer Tights

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674664514894-image

I can't move forward with this story without mentioning the staple item that's been all over the runways lately. Show off as much leg as possible in sheer tights.

Urban Outfitters + Essential Sheer Tight

10. Cardigan

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674664600356-image

This entire outfit is giving the vibe that I'm after this year. Layered, simple, and chic. A cardigan is a must in your capsule wardrobe.

COS + Cropped Wool Cardigan

11. Slip Dress

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674664667990-main

From the office to dinner, French girls always can rely on a slip dress. This is the purchase that you'll make that will just keep on giving.

Norma Kamali + Maria Draped Satin Mini Dress

12. Leather Jacket

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674664879173-image

Parisians and New Yorkers have one thing in common—we love a leather jacket. That won't be changing any time so join us in the hype.

Intermix + Michele Faux Leather Bomber Jacket

13. Ribbed Halter Tank

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674664945185-image

Bonus points if you layer a crew-neck sweater over it and let the halter pop out a little bit, similar to the Bottega Veneta runway styling.

H&M + Ribbed Tank Top

14. Wide-Leg Pants

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674665018621-image

The power of a good pair of wide-leg pants is unmatched. No matter what you wear on top, you'll still look chic (yes, even if you pair them with a sweatshirt).

Scotch & Soda + Low Rise Wide Leg Trousers

15. Geometric Prints

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674665096726-image

French women are very picky when it comes to making a statement. However, in my research for this story, I found so many of them playing around with geometric prints. That means the trend will be here to stay.

Jean Paul Gaultier + Brown Dots Midi Dress

16. Blazers

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674665171604-image

How could you scroll this far without me mentioning a blazer? My bad. You can't give French-girl vibes without having at least three of them in your closet.

Lioness + La Quinta Blazer

17. Gold-Hardware Loafers

french-capsule-wardrobe-2023-304296-1674665223236-image

Nothing feels more luxe to me than a pair of loafers with gold detailing. If you are wearing gold jewelry, it pulls the look together from head to toe.

Tod's + Gomma Pesante Embellished Glossed-Leather Loafers

Headed to the Paris Olympics? Pack these 6 essentials

( NerdWallet ) – As the Summer Olympics approach, start planning your packing list now. A trip to the Paris Olympics , which will run from July 26 to Aug. 11, can call for some essentials that you might not need for a trip elsewhere.

Sure, you might need to buy some new clothes and comfortable shoes for the occasion. But you might also need to apply for a visa and perhaps a new credit card. Besides the predictable guidebook recommendations around what to pack, here are six items to consider acquiring before departure:

1. A Visa credit card, otherwise cash

Visa has sponsored the Olympics since 1986 in an agreement that’s set to run through at least 2032. That deal allows Visa to dominate how you pay for certain Olympic purchases.

If paying by credit card, Paris 2024 Official Shops only accept Visa. If you want to buy official swag in Paris but you’ve got a card from another credit card processing network (say American Express, Discover or Mastercard), you’ll need to pay cash.

You’ll also want to check if your credit card charges foreign transaction fees . Incurred when you use your credit card at a non-U.S. retailer, these common fees run from 1% to 3% of the cost of your transaction.

Many travel credit cards do not charge foreign transaction fees, so these cards could save you some money at souvenir stands and other retailers or restaurants in the city.

But you may not want to apply for an entirely new credit card purely to avoid transaction fees when buying souvenirs. In that case, it might be helpful to think ahead about how you can save on international ATM fees or order foreign currency .

2. A passport and perhaps a visa (the other kind)

Citizens of certain countries need a visa to enter France. The French government website outlines which visitors need a visa and, if so, how to start that application.

According to the U.S. Embassy, U.S. citizens with valid passports don’t need a visa as long as they’re traveling for tourism or business and for 90 days or fewer within each six-month period.

Your passport must also be valid for at least three months after your departure date. The U.S. Embassy recommends your passport have at least six months’ validity remaining. If yours doesn’t, consider renewing your passport now.

3. A light jacket

July and August are the hottest months in Paris, with average daily maximum temperatures of 25.7 degrees Celsius (78.3 degrees Fahrenheit), according to Météo-France, the French national meteorological service.

Still, bring layers, as average lows drop to 16 degrees Celsius (60.8 degrees Fahrenheit). Plus, indoor competition venues might be chilly, and you might want a jacket in case it rains.

4. A small folding umbrella

Speaking of rain, you might also want an umbrella. According to Météo-France, July and August experience seven to eight days of rain on average. But don’t bring large, non-folding umbrellas. Only small folding umbrellas are allowed inside competition venues.

5. A portable smartphone power bank

More aspects of travel necessitate phones. These days, you might use your phone to scan your boarding pass or as a hotel room key . The 2024 Paris Olympics has a dedicated mobile app to display competition schedules, results, interactive maps and details about sessions.

But the app only works if your phone works. Portable smartphone power banks can cost less than $20 and provide a boost to low batteries — as well as some peace of mind.

And while many phone functions work without a cellular connection, you might still want to text, call and use data while abroad . If so, plan ahead. Using data abroad can sometimes be expensive without the right international phone plan.

6. Comfortable shoes

While event organizers say they are working to increase public transport availability, expect large crowds on shuttles between venues. In some cases, walking might be a more practical way of getting around the 2024 Paris Olympics .

Plus, public transit fares will be higher between July 20 and Sept. 8. Valérie Pécresse, the president of the Île-de-France region that includes Paris, said in a video posted to social media that single metro journeys will temporarily cost 4 euros, up from the current price of 2.15 euros.

Walking won’t cost you any money, though it might cause blisters without the right walking shoes. Pack shoes you’ve already worn for long walks pain-free.

What items to skip

While knowing what to pack is critical, so is knowing what not to pack. There will be security checks to enter the 2024 Paris sporting venues . Security guards will not allow items such as alcohol, professional cameras, laser pointers or even certain containers. Check with the venue for a full list of prohibited items. And don’t expect any official bag checks where you can stow your belongings if you do bring anything that’s prohibited.

Also, there are stringent guidelines for certain items. For example, plastic or metal water bottles are OK — but not glass bottles or bottles 75 centiliters (about 25 ounces) or greater.

And as is often the case with packing: Less is more. If you can minimize your stuff to the point that you’re flying carry-on, you may have a more peaceful flying experience. Plus, arriving with fewer things just means more room for souvenirs.

12 Classic French Styles to Buy While They’re on Sale for Presidents Day From $34, According to a Paris Writer

Look like a local with these fashionable finds.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

I’ll let you in on a little secret: the French never shop full price. They celebrate the twice-annual soldes (sale) season as fervently as Fête de la Musique or Bastille Day. As an American who has spent the past decade living in Nice and Paris , I’ve ever-so-happily adopted the ritual of scouring the sale racks during the weeks-long soldes . But as a travel journalist who often needs a last-minute piece for a trip (say, a pair of ski pants for the Dolomites or strappy sandals for Saint-Tropez), I can’t always wait a whole six months to shop. Fortunately, the American holiday sales are much more frequent, allowing me to indulge in one of my favorite pastimes ( Confessions of a Shopaholic has nothing on me!) from the comfort of my couch in my cozy apartment in Paris’s artsy 20th arrondissement.

Presidents Day is a great excuse to do some pre-spring cleaning of my closet to make room for a few special finds I’ve snagged on sale. This year, I’ve already narrowed down my picks to a dozen pieces that are the perfect additions to my Parisian wardrobe. From a sailor-inspired striped sweater dress to a Chanel-style tweed jacket and satin Saint Laurent lookalike vest , here’s what I’m stocking up on for springtime in France.

Sandro Midi Knit Dress

On one of my first trips to Paris, I walked past the vitrine (shop window) of Sandro in the Marais a few times before working up the courage to walk into the boutique and ask (in my mediocre French at the time) to try on the dress in the window. It was cap-sleeved and black, with a bow tied around the lower back, and it epitomized everything I envisioned as French chic. While my style (and view) has changed in the 12 years since, Sandro is still very much characteristic of the Parisian (and my) closet — tailored, feminine silhouettes that look timeless but still aren’t afraid to take a risk here and there.

One style in particular I love is this ribbed midi knit dress, which buttons down to the bottom of its ruffle skirt. The pale shade of yellow is a nice departure from bone white and pairs beautifully with black accessories (which I own a lot of!) and nearly any type of footwear, from sneakers to ankle boots, sandals, or chunky patent leather heels when you want to add some height.

Madewell Satin Cutaway Vest Top

The French are notorious for deconstructing fashion for looks that come off as more androgynous. The best example? Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking jacket — a tux intended for women. Bianca Jagger so glamorously pulled off a tailored YSL two-piece suit when she married Mick, and the look continues to return to runways and serve as inspiration for courthouse weddings in France today. A play on this style that’s easier to sport on an everyday basis is the suit vest, especially this silky satin version that takes a cue from the pajamas-as-clothing trend that isn’t dying anytime soon.

The form-fitting silhouette is feminine and flirty, and the shimmery dusk-gray color adds the pizzazz you’ll want for a night out in Paris. Tone it down with flared jeans and ankle boots, give it a daytime spin with a cardigan draped over, or go for the full formal look with a matching slip skirt and strappy heels. “I recently purchased this vest top, and I'm absolutely thrilled with it,” says one shopper. “The satin material feels luxurious, and the cutaway front adds a playful touch to the design. It fits perfectly, hitting just at the right length, making it easily tuckable.”

Abercrombie & Fitch High-Rise ’90s Relaxed Jeans

Abercrombie & Fitch

Since the temperature in Paris can swing from full summer to sweater weather in the course of an hour, layers quickly become your friend. Throughout most of the year, apart from balmy July and August, pants become my daily go-to. One pair that shifts with the seasons and always looks stylish is this ’90s-style high-rise jean from Abercrombie & Fitch.

Neutral bone is a great alternative to snow white, and the relaxed fit and raw hem add to the laid-back vintage look. The stretch fabric offers enough structure and support yet still molds to your shape. The fact that you can choose the length is a big plus for us petite girls, and the high waist helps shield my curves in the most flattering of ways. I’m not the only one who’s a fan: “These are my absolute favorite jeans ever. I have them in four different colors, with bone being the most recent,” raved one shopper. “I can’t recommend these jeans enough — my best friend ended up getting two pairs after trying mine on.”

Everlane Day Sneaker

My friends know how hard it is for me to find a sneaker I’ll actually wear. I’ve purchased and tried all of the fan favorites: Converse, Veja, New Balance. They’re cool, I know, but just not right for me . When I came across Everlane’s tapered-toe Day Sneaker, I had a revelation. Following the French ethos of “less is more,” these Kalamata olive-colored shoes feel more loafer than sneaker. The matching laces and contrasting rubber outsole pop without trying too hard — they’re very classic in style and look sophisticated enough to wear with tailored white trousers or ankle-grazing denim. While the look is certainly on point, so is the design, which features 100-percent recycled polyester laces and linings, as well as leather sourced from a sustainability-driven tannery.

“Works for day or evening,” adds one shopper. “Comfy for hitting 25,000 steps in a foreign city.” I think I just discovered my new favorite travel sneakers.

Modegal Satin High Waist A-Line Midi Skirt

Whether I’m heading on an island getaway in the Caribbean or packing for a cozy winter escape in the French Alps, a satin A-line skirt is one of the first pieces in my packing cubes . A versatile day-to-night item that you can easily dress up or down, this is what you’ll find me in for lunch with a flowy, capped-sleeve crop top in St. Barts or at dinner with a thick knit sweater, sheer black tights, and ankle boots in St. Moritz.

The A-line design is always a flattering look (especially when you’re indulging in cheese fondue!), and the midi length hits right below the knee — fantastic for those of us who are on the shorter side. “Bought this for my wife who struggles to find skirts that aren’t too long, but this one fit her perfectly,” one shopper said. Another raved : “Love that there's a little flare in the skirt and that it's very stretchy and forgiving in the waist. I wear it long or sometimes I roll it up and wear it shorter under a sweater — it works well both ways.”

Madewell Denim Motorcycle Jacket

A cropped motorcycle jacket — especially in denim — is one of the best pieces of outerwear you can sport in Paris in spring. Softer and more lightweight than leather, the biker-chic style looks fabulous over a silky slip dress or fitted tank and jeans. I’m a big fan of denim on denim, but with this faded black wash, you have the perfect contrast if you’re wearing blue jeans or a denim mini skirt.

“Finally, Madewell doing what they do best — staple pieces with a twist that won’t date,” declared one shopper. “My usual size fits me perfectly, ever so slightly relaxed but not at all oversized.” Play on the biker theme with a white ribbed top and black leather skinny jeans, with red lips serving as your sole accessory. Throw on a pair of Chelsea boots and you’re ready for a day (or night) out in Paris.

Everlane Olive Lug Chelsea Boots

Lug-sole boots have been declared the look for the season, and I couldn’t be happier. Parisians don’t follow trends, per se, but when it comes to footwear that’s practical and stylish, they’ll hop right on board. These chunky sole Chelsea boots are a more elevated take on the traditionally punk style — especially in this hunter green “beech” shade. Pull-on tabs make them easy to take on and off, which is something that comes in handy while shopping and trying on clothing or traveling and having to quickly slip off shoes at security.

“Bought burgundy first and got beech as soon as I received the burgundy, which showed how much I liked the boot,” said one shopper. “Besides being comfy, it looks handsomely elegant and durable.”

River Island Long-Sleeve Rib Midi Striped Sweater Dress

France is a country where it’s year-round sweater weather — the main difference each season is the style of sweater you’re sporting. As we ease into spring, those thick cableknits are getting packed up and put into storage until fall. We’re embracing the new season with lightweight, fitted silhouettes instead. This ribbed long-sleeve sweater dress is my version of a compromise — it’ll keep you just warm enough (add on a leather or jean jacket if it’s a breezy day) while still looking fashionable enough for everything from a day of gallery hopping and lunch on a terrace to date night or a weekend trip down to the French Riviera. The goldtone buttons paired with the more modern take on sailor stripes is just the nautical look I love for an afternoon in Monaco sipping rosé by the sea. At 45 percent off, this is one of the best sale finds I’ve come across this season.

Bostanten Leather Bucket Bag

Bucket bags continue coming back into fashion, but in France, this style has long been a staple. The issue in a city like Paris, however, is that an open purse attracts pickpockets on the métro and in bars. This tote-sized bucket bag at Amazon provides the ideal solution with a removable zip pouch that’s large enough to carry everyday essentials like an iPad, sunglasses, umbrella (these are crucial all year long), and perfume. The pouch even makes it easy to pack into a carry-on without having to remove any items from your purse.

With two interchangeable guitar straps (one leather, one woven), you can keep switching up the look depending on your outfit or where you’re heading. More than 8,000 reviewers agree: “It's a great size, feels great, there are pockets inside for small items, a clasp to keep it closed, and don't get me started on the fine quality and design,” raved one shopper , who declared it the best purchase of January. “This brand is top-notch for Amazon handbags,” adds another . “The quality is amazing and rivals designer brands [in my opinion] — now I want it in more colors.”

Abercrombie & Fitch Collarless Cream Tweed Jacket

Chanel’s 1920s tweed suit has become as essential a staple and signature piece in the French wardrobe as the Hermès Birkin bag or monogrammed Goyard tote. Continuously reinterpreted and adopted by everyone from Saint Laurent to Sandro, this iconic item is one that you don’t have to spend thousands on to achieve the same look.

Take this collarless, cropped cream version from Abercrombie & Fitch, which has a more approachable, younger feel to it. My favorite way to style a jacket like this is simply over straight-leg jeans and a cream-colored bodysuit or tank, but you can also give it more edge with denim shorts and ankle boots. “It’s an easy work outfit — goes perfectly with high-waisted skinny or tapered trousers,” attested one shopper. “True to size and worked for me even though I’m short.”

Bueno Mustard Crisscross Strap Leather Sandals

As soon as we get that first glimpse of sunshine in spring, the boots are off and Parisians are parading through town and along the Seine in strappy sandals. Since I’m often stacking coffee dates, errands, and drinks back-to-back on the weekend, I need comfortable shoes for a day running around town and still look stylish for an evening out, if I don’t have time to go home and change. These slip-on slingback strappy sandals have a slight heel that’s balanced out by the super comfortable padded footbed and open round toe.

“The leather is buttery soft, and there's a bit of cushioning in the soles,” said one shopper. “It feels like you're walking on two beautiful little clouds.” Considering the number of steps I get in each day in Paris, I couldn’t ask for anything better.

Free People Bunny Slope Printed Ski Pants

Free People

By Presidents Day, my friends are already discussing summer plans: a villa on Crete, sailing in Croatia, sunbathing on the Amalfi Coast. And while resort wear is perhaps my favorite type of clothing to purchase (and pack!), I’m still plotting my seasonal ski trip to Verbier or Val d’Isère, since the snow is usually at its best just before Easter approaches. A look that goes from tearing up the slopes to après-ski, these high-rise, straight-leg Free People ski pants are at the top of my list this season.

The color (dubbed “mountain sage mist”) is my version of winter white — stylish but with an extra edge thanks to the subtle print. Water- and wind-resistant, these beauties will keep you protected from even the strongest gusts of wind while on the mountain. As someone who gets cold easily, the insulated interior is a huge bonus for me — plus, they have all sorts of other practical design details like boot gaiters and an adjustable waistband, so you’ll be more than comfortable whether you’re snowboarding, snowshoeing, or simply sitting on the slopes with a glass of vin chaud (mulled wine).
