Over the years, we’ve had a lot of experience with pullman beds in different cabin types on several cruise lines and ships. From the small space of an inside cabin to larger balcony rooms, these foldable beds worked well for us!

Our family cruised a lot when my kids were young, and we often had a quad cabin with two pullman beds. Each bunk style bed was above the main bed in the stateroom.

Even today, our young adult son often cruises with us in a triple occupancy cabin.

Pullman beds that come out of the wall usually fold up onto the wall. However, the convertible bed may not be completely hidden when not in use.

If you are only two passengers in a cabin, this type of cabin is probably one you’ll want to avoid . Some people have shared that they would knock their heads on the bed when folded, even if not being used.

What is the Difference Between a Pullman Bed and a Sofa Bed?

While pullman berths are frequently found on a cruise ships, there are some cabins that may have a sofa bed for third or fourth passengers.

There are actually many different and unique cabin configurations, so it’s a good idea to check the cruise ship deck plan. Better yet, ask your travel agent so they can do all the work for you.

As an example, if you look at the deck plan of the cruise ship you are interested in, cabins with a sofa bed usually have a small circle in the cabin diagram to indicate two lower beds and 1 sofa bed (for three people). A small square will often indicate two lower beds and one or two pullman beds.

We’ve sailed on cruise ships in cabins with pullman beds, sofa beds, trundle beds and even a futon bed. In some cases, a rollaway bed may be provided. This is another way to maximize floor space.

While rollaway beds or cots are less common for third or fourth guests in a stateroom, they are available on some cruise ships. During the day, the extra bed can be folded up, provided there is room, like in this mini-suite cabin.

How Do You Setup a Pullman Bed?

Cruise passengers are not expected to set up the pullman bed in their cabin. The stateroom attendant will set up the extra bed each day. You cabin steward may ask you if you prefer to leave the bed out during the day, or keep it out all the time.

If you have a child, teen or tween, or young adult that might want to relax on the bed, you can ask to leave the pullman bed made up all the time.

However, if you prefer more open space in your cabin during the day, you can ask your cabin attendant to fold up the bunk bed when not being used.

Are Pullman Beds Comfortable?

Pullman beds are fairly comfortable and usually have a good mattress. In fact, kids usually love this bunk bed style sleeping arrangement.

However, a single pullman bed isn’t very big. Teens and adults may find a pullman bed less comfortable than a regular cruise ship bed.

If the person is quite tall or big, an upper pullman bunk bed might make it hard to have a good night’s sleep.

Who Can Sleep on a Pullman Bed?

Children and adults can sleep on a pullman bed. However, keep in mind that this is an upper top bunk bed. You’ll want to make sure that it’s both safe and comfortable for whomever will be sleeping on it.

There are safety guidelines for age, height and weight to be aware of.

My own children slept in the upper pullman beds from the ages of 5 and 9. I felt that these were safe sleeping arrangements given their size. If your child is likely to roll or fall our of bed, or sleepwalks, they are likely better on the lower beds.

Can Adults Sleep on Pullman Beds?

Adults can definitely sleep on pullman beds on a cruise. While cabin quarters will be tight, if you’re three to four friends who are cruising on a limited budget, why not?

Pullman beds are very solid and can handle the weight of many adults, although there are weight restrictions to be aware of.

That said, there are some negative points to pullman beds to be aware of, especially for adults. If you’re tall, you may find the space cramped and hit your head on the ceiling.

You’ll also have to be agile enough to climb a ladder up and down from the bed, even during the night. If anyone has mobility issues, pullman beds are likely not the best choice.

Mature cruisers may want to look at other options, including cabins that have small sofa beds.

Are Pullman beds comfortable?

If you can sleep comfortably in a single bed, then a Pullman bed shouldn’t be much different. These pull-down beds employ standard mattresses. So from a comfort standpoint, they typically offer more support than a sofa bed.

Pullman beds are traditionally better for families with children, due to their size. There are usually guard rails along the side to help prevent rolling out of bed, though their size varies by ship.

Is there there a weight limit on upper bunks? Also are there bed rails? Our 2 DS are already bickering over who gets the top bunk for our Oct. Elation cruise. The other one will have to sleep on the couch, made into a bed. DS, 10, really wants up top. He's kind of a chunky monkey, but really tall too, weighs about 120, solid muscle. Our older DS is super thin. I worry if we put younger DS up top, he'll roll out of bed. (He wallers in his sleep, bad!)

I just need your help to hopefully stop the bickering between my 2. I've decided if there's rails & weight is ok, I'm flipping a coin! Thanks.

I've slept in bunks on many ships, including the Elation. I weigh more than your son. Have had no problem sleeping on the top bunk on any ship. IIRC 250 is the stated weight limit.

There is a rail starting, situated about 18" from either end.

If he's tall, he'll have to watch his head. I'm about 5', my head just grazes the ceiling.

We hang a pocket holder from the hook closest to the bunk. The top pockets are the nightstand for the bunk.

I read somewhere the limit was 200 or 250 #'s. There is a rail.

Just a suggestion. Why not have them take turns?

What cabin type do you have? Only suites have couches on the Elation. Don't remember if the fourth also sleeps on the sofa bed or in a bunk.

If you're in an OV or IS and bringing in a trundle or rollaway, keep the lowers apart perpendicularly. More walking around room that way.

We've never had more than 2 in our room. I have heard that in some cabins the drop down bunks can be limited in space. When on the Valor in April 2016, we were waiting in line on embarkation day for the customer service desk and overheard a couple complaining that they specifically requested a cabin (interior) for 3 that did not have a drop down b/c their son did not fit in the drop down bunk. If I had to guess, I would say he was about 5'10 and about 200 lbs. Not sure if that helps.

Should've shared in OP, we're in a 6B, OV, Upper deck.U159, specifically. Room description says 1 upper bunk, couch to be made into bed, 1 upper Pullman.

My oldest DS is a total germaphobe, so I don't think swapping will fly w him. Who knows. Maybe once on board they'll decide for themselves.

THANK YOU!!! I called and asked about the couch. She said yes about the trundle. I'd wanted a port side room, but wanted U deck. I made an executive choice & switched to E194. It has 2 uppers, and port side. NOW my concern is hearing them clean the dining room into the wee hours or my guys waking up too early bc of overhead noise. It's hard being a type A planner, lol. Esp Mom Mode planning. 😊

Wouldn't worry too much about the MDR. We had an E253on the Inspiration in December. Didn't hear a thing. The aft MDR is only used for dinner and some crew training.

Weight limit--I have no idea. But I can say that I (close to 200 lbs) and Husband (around 250-260) have both slept on an upper hanging from the ceiling bunk. They are NOT (imo) very comfortable. The mattress seemed thin to me and every morning I woke up so stiff and in so much pain that I had to spend at least an hour or more in the hot tub before I could move even remotely comfortably. After a week? My back was so messed up it took me having to use a heating pad for a couple days once we got home because it was that sore.

I wouldn't want my worst enemy (ok..MAYBE my worst enemy. Or Donald Trump;p) sleeping in an upper bunk. Just..no.

Our adult sons went with us Jesse is 5'8 170 lbs slept on Pullman Chris is 6 ft 215 lbs and slept on couch bed. Both did fine!

I slept on the top drop down bed on the Carnival Paradise. I'm 6ft 240 if that helps

I cannot believe I lived to see this day if the 250 weight rule is real. In college in the early 2000s, my friends and I all went on Spring Break out of Miami on a ship for 5 days. Everyone was living four people to a room (of course).

Somehow a group of girls from our Greek (fraternity and sorority) travel group had an odd number of people and one of them got put with my friends and I in a 4 person room. This girl was a really sweet soul and a trooper about being bunked with us. She offered to take top bunk.

I bet she was at least 6 feet tall and 325 lbs. Let's just say her dad used to play offensive line at our college and played in the NFL and she was a chip off the old block. On this trip actually she and our friend "Chizmo" kept getting into contests. Chizmo was a slight guy with a Napoleon complex. He lost to Laura in arm wrestling, beer drinking contest in Cozumel and shrimp cocktail eating contest.

Do not take this as an endorsement for going above the weight limit, just wanted to share fun memories and offer some insight!

At 120 pounds you don't even need to worry about the weight. You should now be worrying about playing referee for the kids when they start fighting for the bed. There is a rail but it doesn't cover the entire bed.

Just called my friend who was on trip. Story of Chizmo gets even sadder. The reason the larger female was staying in our room was because a guy in another fraternity was staying in the room with his sister. Lol. Not really that funny because Chizmo is now working at one of the big finance firms on wall street making more money a year than I'll ever make in my life :(

The pullman drops from the ceiling, correct? Is there a weight limit?? Is it a normal twin size bed? Does anyone have a picture of it? Thanks!

There is no height restriction on the Pullman berths, but the bed length is 1.98 m (76”). Max. weight is 300 lbs. I think it's the same size as a twin.  

Thanks. It makes me really nervous that there aren't any support legs on the outer side of the bed, and really not even on the inner side. There's simply a HINGE. Scary.  

I’m not fully understanding of the physics of the bed (then again I’ve never really explored the physics of it either) but it seems to work. I don’t like having my head that close to the ceiling though. Since there’s three of you, if you don’t need the bed at all just make sure the attendant keeps it tucked away for you.

This is exactly what we had on Allure last August. Worked fine for the four of us. If Katelet has this configuration everything should be good.  

I do have the above configuration. I hadn't thought about using the sofa bed as I worried it would take up so much space (and it does judging from the pics) and I was worried it might not be comfy. I guess we need to wait and see and test both the pullman and the sofa out. It will be tough getting ready in the morning though with the sofa out... How early can you get the steward to put it back?  

It is a little tight in that area, but to paraphrase Ian Malcolm, cruisers, uh, find a way. The area between the main bed and the wall is generally enough space to change, as is the area between bed and closet. Worst case scenario is the “do not try this at home” option of changing on top of the main or sofa bed. Space is at a premium in most cabins, so do what you gotta.

I guess I don't even understand WHY cruise cabins are so small. Why aren't they the size of hotel rooms?? I realize the bigger they are the fewer you can put on a ship, but is that so bad? There are plenty of small ships that do well like the Disney Magic and Wonder. Why do they build huge ones like Oasis and instead of putting bigger rooms in it, they just put the same small ones in and carry more people. My point with the Magic and Wonder is that clearly ships with fewer rooms still make a profit.

I don't mind smaller rooms since I spend hardly time in them. If you need more space there is always the option of booking a suite. If all rooms were double the size so would the price. Cruising with a family of 5 is expensive enough.

So interesting! Did the second part raise up to meet the original part so you could have a double bed? My daughter (adult) ended up using the sofa bed and not the pullman. When the steward pulled it out it looked quite rickety and it seemed noisy with all the metal. I wished we didn't have it at all as the creaking of the ceiling was bad and probably having that bed up there and not a solid ceiling didn't help. I had no idea ships were so noisy and creaky! Sometimes in the morning before the sofa became a sofa again we would just walk across the room on the bed and sofa bed as though they were floors. That tiny space when both are set up was awful. My sister's room steward set her sofa bed up the wrong way each night...she had them sleeping the same direction as those on the bed! In other words she had them sleeping lengthwise on the shortest part! Did you prefer Harmony or Oasis?

Based on that I wouldn't do Harmony! I'm not one for engaging with the staff (I"m an introvert; I am friendly and nice, but I'm not interested in forming a relationship with strangers) but it sounds like they were not up to snuff at all. A nice cabin is important though! But the cabin on Oasis was nice enough for me so I'd choose that over Harmony.
