On tours canceled more than 24 hours before the scheduled departure time, we are happy to offer our customers a refund for the full value of the tour.  This policy is valid across most of our tours, but is subject to some exceptions. In the case of a tour not being in line with this 24-hour cancelation policy, you will find this information in the "Know Before You Go" section of the specific tour page.   Tours cannot be canceled with less than 24 hours notice. We are unable to provide compensation for cancelations with the 24 hour window prior to your tour departure, nor can tour dates or times be amended. Bookings made with the 24 hour window are final .

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy's most popular and stunning regions, located only 172 miles (277 kilometers) from Rome . It can be found in the region of Campania, just south of Naples and not too far from Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius . Travelers can take a train or bus straight to Salerno or drive to the town of Amalfi along the winding road through the Ferriere Valley.

The Amalfi Coast is made up of many different towns , so having a car may be useful if you plan to explore, but there's also an easy-to-use bus system that runs frequently and services many of the towns on the tourist route. There are several options to get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome if you don't want to drive yourself, such as taking the bus or train. The train ride to Amalfi from Rome is often much faster than driving.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Rome to the Amalfi Coast?

The absolute cheapest way to get to the Amalfi Coast is to take a regional train, which is a local train that typically runs on a commuter schedule. These fares start at $19, but they are not high-speed routes. Depending on how many stops it makes, a regional train to Salerno could take between four and five hours. Bus routes offered by Marino Bus take about the same length of time, but are slightly more expensive with tickets starting at $22.

When looking for the cheapest option, make sure to check both bus and train schedules. Although the bus may cost a few bucks more than the regional train, the route might be slightly faster with fewer scheduled stops.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Rome to the Amalfi Coast?

For not much more than the cost of the regional train, you can take a direct high-speed train from Rome to Salerno that will get you there in about two hours, 30 minutes, although sometimes direct trains can take as long as three hours. These trains are more expensive, but you'll also have the option to upgrade to first class and on-board bar service will be available.

To get to Amalfi quickly, you'll first need to catch a Trenitalia or Italo train from Roma Termini, Rome's main train station, to Stazione Salerno, the main station in Salerno. Trains run directly between the two stations from early morning until late at night. You could also take a train to Naples and then make a connection in Salerno, which may be worth a stop for a quick lunch—especially if you've never tasted Neapolitan-style pizza before.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

The roads in Amalfi are famously winding and narrow in places, especially the SS163, the Amalfi Coast road which connects the main coastal towns and offers iconic views along the way. This three-hour, 30-minute route may be difficult for a non-local driver to traverse easily.

However, you may want a car if you're staying in one of the Amalfi Coast's small villages. To drive from Rome, take the A24 Autostrada to the E45. When figuring out your budget, don't forget to factor in the cost of tolls, gas, and parking.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to the Amalfi Coast?

The fastest train, the Frecciabianca , leaves Rome every day between 6:00 a.m. and 9 p.m. If your schedule is flexible, you should book this train and plan for an early evening arrival in Amalfi, which will give you more time to check into your accommodation and rest a little before heading out in the evening. Alternatively, the fastest train to Salerno, via Italo, leaves Rome late at 6:30 p.m. and arrives at 8:11 p.m. Although it's the quickest way to get to Amalfi, this arrival may be too late for some travelers.

Summers in the Amalfi Coast can be extremely hot and especially crowded as visitors flock to the beaches. When it comes to Italy cruises, your best bet is to go with a small-ship sailing. Big ships tend to do the tried and true— Rome , Venice , Florence , Naples—not that there’s anything wrong with seeing the Colosseum, St. Mark’s Square, Michelangelo’s David , and the ruins of Pompeii . But on the best cruises around Italy, there’s opportunity to go deeper and at a slower pace.

You’ll often still be able to check off major marquee attractions, while at the same time admiring the pastel-colored villages and hairpin roadways along the Amalfi Coast, the unspoiled landscapes of Puglia, the drama of Sicily, or the dreamy Ligurian coast. In addition to visiting off-the-beaten-path places, small ships tend to linger in ports, with the best itineraries including late evening or overnight stays. That way, there’s time to sample the dining scene—key for cruisers like me who like to try the local pasta dish in every town.

The main season for Italy cruises is April to October, coinciding with weather that increases the allure of beaches and outdoor attractions, even if visiting ancient ruins in the heat of summer may require some fortitude.

Where Italy cruises sail

Amalfi Coast

Along the famed Amalfi Coast , ships visit Sorrento, overlooking the bay of Naples, and colorful Amalfi, dramatically backed by steep cliffs. Some itineraries also including the strikingly beautiful Positano. Smaller yacht vessels may sail directly to the fancy island of Capri (otherwise there will be a shore excursion, as with the larger ships). Among other shore choices in this region is a visit to ancient Pompeii.

Italy cruise itineraries often land at several ports on Sicily, and some itineraries circumnavigate the island. Each port has its own allure, including the city scene in Palermo; Syracuse, which showcases ancient attractions from when it was a prominent Greek city; Taormina, with its impressive hilltop location and Greek theater; and Lipari, which has a charming, tiny island ambience. Increasingly popular on the cruise map are destinations in Puglia , a region of olive groves and national parks. Small ships call in the city of Lecce and town of Gallipoli, with their impressive baroque architecture; Taranto, a bustling port city with a history dating back to the Spartans and known for its fresh seafood restaurants; the town of Otranto, where a chapel in the cathedral displays skulls of martyrs from a 15th-century Ottoman siege; and the scenic fishing town of Monopoli, with its beaches and castles.

Adriatic Coast and Sardinia

Atlas Ocean Voyages, with its elegant small expedition ships, switches the focus from penguin-spotting in Antarctica to summer expedition cruises in Europe, including what the Portuguese-owned line calls “epicurean expeditions.” On the 196-passenger World Traveller , one such expedition from between Malta and Rome adds the food angle to exploration of Sicily and the Amalfi Coast, with overnights in Positano, the dramatically positioned cliffside town with its labyrinth of staircases, and on the island of Capri. Sailing round-trip from Venice on the upscale 684-passenger Azamara Pursuit , this “ Italy Intensive Voyage ,” which sets sail in June 2024, takes passengers to Bologna, where optional excursions include a visit to the Ferrari Museum, and the historic Adriatic port city of Ancona, before cruising over to Kotor, Montenegro, with its impressive fjord approach and UNESCO-recognized Old Town. Hello good evening

We're a couple arriving Rome on first of May at 12:00

We will stay in a hotel in airport area (I need a recommendation) we travel light so we dont mid walking a bit if there's a hotel in walking distance

Next day morning we want to travel to Amalfi coast (we have no idea from which station and if it's a train or bus)

And we will spend 5 days and then we will go back to Rome to spend two days

Can any one please help me to plan for this trip with stations please

Hello. There is a nice, big Hilton Hotel at the FCO airport as one option. There are other hotels in the nearby vicinity that you can go to by taxi or shuttle.

If you are staying in an Amalfi Coast villa ges that has ferry service, it is best to take the train to Salerno then the ferry to whichever village you are staying in.
