Foxygen is an American indie rock duo originally formed in Westlake Village, California consisting of Sam France, Jonathan Rado, Shaun Fleming and Justin Nijssen.

Rado and France met at the young age of fifteen and decided to form the band that would go on to be known as Foxygen whilst still at high school. They bonded over their adoration for the experimental and their music tended to feature sporadic influences from spectrums as broad as psychedelica, 60s/70s and the avant-garde/330. After they settled on some sort of consistent sound, the boys began to produce EPs and began playing their music in the local gig circuits. Producer Richard Swift attended a New York show in 2011 and afterwards the band gave him one of their experimental early EPs. This led to a deal with Jagjaguwar Records who released the duo's first LP 'Take the Kids Off Broadway' a year later in 2012.

'We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic' was the follow-up and Richard Swift personally took care of production and housing the studio sessions to create this album. It debuted on the US charts at #76 and also made appearances on charts around Europe. The band's reputation for the unpredictable and experimental has grown drastically with particular attention to Sam France who's stage behaviour is often described as borderline manic. He once broke his leg at a show after falling off the stage after just one song.

The third album was released in October 2014 and was titled '...And Star Power', it peaked at #83 in the States. The album received mixed reviews due to its extreme experimental nature and it's drastic length, some publications seemed to suspend disbelief and revel in the madness whilst other described it as 'a failed experiment'.

Live reviews

After Californian indie rock duo Foxygen appeared on the scene in 2012 with an album of innovation they were championed by a huge number of UK publications including NME, however their career never really amassed to much on British shores yet in their homeland they won a cult-like dedicated fanbase.

Most of these devotees often claim the reason they adore the band so much is the bizarre live show that the duo has developed. On a recent stop off in London they demonstrated this level of surrealism whilst promoting latest release '...And Star Power'. The crowd seems responsive to the recognisable trip-hop beats and psychedelic overcoating whilst appreciating the lean toward baroque on 'Can't Contextualise My Mind'. They reach back to its predecessor 'We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic' for a finale including the shining tones of 'Shuggie' and of course the favourite 'San Francisco' which evokes the biggest cheers of the evening.

Although they have been known to bring a certain level of drama and scandal to the live stage (legs broken, sets cut short etc.), if you are lucky enough to see Foxygen when they are on form, you are in for a treat! With their 60’s-meets-modern sound and eccentric personalities, they are capable of putting on a cracking show. The sweetness of Sam France’s vocals on songs like ‘San Francisco’ and ‘Shuggie’ will not fail to put a smile on your face and get your feet shuffling. Their experimental approach to poppy yet artfully layered tunes is uplifting and makes for a cracking gig experience!

What a mess. Seems to me that their only point was to destroy all their songs on stage.

The sound was so bad your ears just heart and the voices only got through the rest of the mix from time to time. Maybe that's a good thing since all that the front guy did was screeming und grunting. The dancing backup singers were better but had to scream most of the show as well - guess that's part of the concept. Then they started talking for ages when they really just should have played.

Been to many concerts, but this was just a joke.

The support act was good though. They could sing and sounded good.

Actually a pretty kick-ass live performance! I wans't sure what to expect since I thought it was just the two dudes, but they had a full band, with a horn section, a female back-up vocalist, a great guitarist, etc. Great energy, and the songs really translate well to a high-energy, somewhat flamboyant, almost David Bowie-esque live show. Talented dudes. Played all the hits from We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors, as well as a bunch of solid tracks from the new album. Highly recommend!

This show was freaking incredible. I bought tickets super impulsively and last minute, but it was definitely one of the best shows I've seen. The band's instrumental talents are unparalleled in many modern music, full of quirks and surprises. The lead singer Sam France was so eccentric onstage! He was full of energy the entire show, and it was so captivating. The pianist/guitarist Jonathan Rado was siiiick on his instruments. Such an inspiring show!!

Ridiculously fun and full of energy. The backup singers were totally awesome. Glad they came to Pittsburgh and hope they had a good time. The band was tight and the songs they played were awesome...was the "Let It Be" riff a poke at McCartney for choosing Kayne over Foxygen? Bad choice Sir Paul. This band would be way more fun.

The acoustics at Mr. Smalls are atrocious - I always have a hard time hearing the lyrics.

Foxygen was an experience. I liked a lot of things but also had a few things I wasn't as good with. The biggest plus was the music in the background with the meter changes and key changes. however their biggest minus for me was the enthusiasm. When a guy as invigorating as Sam France gets up on stage, everyone (including Sam himself) needed to vibe more, but maybe that was just me.

joeymueser’s profile image

So amazing! They played all the songs I NEEDED to hear. Songs from 21st Century, TTKOB, Hang, and Star Power! It was amazing. And after the concert my boyfriend, me, and our friends got to meet Johnothan Rado and he gave us guitar picks and talked to us for a good minute! Lovvvve you Rado!!!!

Awesome show, especially of the singer Sam France! The music is much more powerful and fast than in their recordings and that feels really good! I don't know many other bands with such an impressive characteristic sound! I left with the feeling I may have experienced a big show!

Sebba_27’s profile image

One of the worst shows i have ever been to. Sound was very badly mixed, you couldn't even recognize most of the songs. The show itself was more like a musical than a serious concert. It seemed like they didnt even care about the music.

Foxygen performs live at the Rock and Roll Hotel in Washington, D.C.

The trippy pop group Foxygen gave a thrilling, sometimes chaotic live performance at the Rock and Roll Hotel in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night, channeling everyone from The Velvet Underground to The Rolling Stones and Ramones.

Foxygen (A-plus for the name alone) is the music of Jonathan Rado and Sam France, two friends from the Los Angeles area who share a love of avant-garde pop and classic rock. They started playing together and formed the band when they were just 15. Their full-length debut, produced by Richard Swift , is We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic .

This performance was recorded live on Feb. 27, 2013.

Foxygen: Jonathan Rado and Sam France. Photos by Cara Robbins .

Since the success of their brilliantly shaggy debut album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic , Foxygen have gained a reputation as a band teetering on the brink of collapse. First, there was a SXSW set last year that saw frontman Sam France confronting a crowd member —exact quote: “Come on the fucking stage and talk to me about it, you fucking coward”—and then storming off. Then, they canceled a tour . And last summer, rumors of turmoil between France and co-founder Jonathan Rado popped up.

All of which might make you think the sessions for their forthcoming second record ...And Star Power would be rife with conflict and at least a few fistfights. But that would not be the case. In fact, the only moment of contentiousness they can recall involved a five-minute argument about the quality of a certain drum take and a thrown lighter—not exactly "Behind the Music" material. "As far as me and Sam working together as Foxygen, that was never a question," says Rado. France agrees, calling any and all breakup rumors "utter bullshit."

So while their internal drama may not reach Beatles or Fleetwood Mac levels, ...And Star Power still finds the band checking-off another slew of classic-rock tropes. Make a bloated double album? Done. Give it a concept that’s not entirely clear? Sure. Adopt multiple alter egos? Absolutely. Enlist special guests? Indeed, including members of the Flaming Lips, Of Montreal, White Fence, and Bleached. Still, the duo insist they are doing more than simply regurgitating what came before them. "People think we're really stuck in the past, but we don't really think of all this stuff as tributes to old classic rock and shit," says France. "Our philosophy is a little more liquid and modern than that."

Pitchfork: There are a lot of guests on this album, but did you write songs with other artists in mind who you couldn't get?

Jonathan Rado: We wanted the L.A. producer guru Kim Fowley on it, but it didn't work out.

Sam France: Stevie Nicks didn’t work out either.

JR: We tried to get Stevie. Early on, I wanted to get Paul McCartney to play drums on a song, but it didn’t work out with Paul.

SF: Our management did reach out, though.

JR: They just got an email back that said something like, "Paul doesn't guest star." As it is, Star Power is like the budget version of the album that it could've been if Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks were on it.

... And Star Power cover:

Image may contain Human Person Art Painting and Hand

Pitchfork: The liner notes list each side’s theme, and side one is called "Star Power, Side One, Part One: The Hits; What's the Hook?"

JR: [ laughs ] Yeah, that's the side of the album that I think casual Foxygen listeners will really like. "What's the hook?" is like the album's motto—while we were recording, we wrote that on the wall of the studio, and it was overlooking us the whole time. It doesn't necessarily mean "catchy chorus," but more like, "Why are people going to want to listen to this song?"

Pitchfork: How fleshed out is the Star Power universe? Do you have personas for the band, or is it more of a loose concept?

SF: It's a looser concept—it's just exaggerated ideas of me and Rado.

JR: Our live band right now is kind of like Star Power, so if there was a band that was Star Power, it would currently be Foxygen.

Image may contain Human Person Heel Footwear Clothing Apparel Shoe and Wood

Pitchfork: You credit a Skip Spence song in the liner notes—is it important for you guys to give credit where it’s due as far as borrowing from other artists?

SF: Particularly in that case, yes. It's from a bonus track on Oar by Skip Spence, which is kind of obscure, so I definitely wanted to credit him. But other than that, I don’t think we've ever given too much credit. Our songs have always just been this changing amalgamation of things.

JR: Sometimes you realize you do it after the fact. Not that every Foxygen song is ripped off from other songs, but there were a few moments where it's like, "oops”. But if you’re not realizing it, you're warping it into something else that’s not that person's song anymore.

Pitchfork: Well, for example, when you made "On Blue Mountain" , from the first album, were you aware that the chorus sounds like Elvis'  "Suspicious Minds" ?

SF: There was a point where I was like, "Yo, this is ‘Suspicious Minds.’" But we weren't really thinking about it.

JR: We don't ever go, "Oh, we're going to steal this part." We'll write something and be like, "Oh, maybe that's something else." But we still wrote it and it still came from an organic place.
