2020 Chrysler Voyager Is a New Lower-Cost Minivan

This budget version of the pacifica doesn't even offer key advanced safety features, sharing is nice.

In a summer of retro revival—"Aladdin," "The Lion King," "Men in Black," and "Toy Story" are all in theaters—it seems fitting that Chrysler is reviving an old model name with the 2020 Chrysler Voyager.

This new minivan is positioned between the long-running Dodge Grand Caravan and the current Chrysler Pacifica, on which it's based. The Voyager is essentially the two lowest trims of the Pacifica, the L and LX, spun off under a new model name. (The fleet-only LXi version is headed primarily for rental car lots.)

The Voyager will also be available with rear- and side-entry conversions to accommodate the needs of wheelchair and mobility scooter users.

Here's what we know so far.

The Voyager's exterior is nearly indistinguishable from a Pacifica's, aside from the badging. The front of this minivan has a simpler design than the Pacifica, and the body lacks some of the garnish and foglights used to dress up the Pacifica. 

The Voyager's interior is likewise familiar, because it's drawn directly from the Pacifica. In our tests of that minivan, we found that it was a step up from the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna, although there were still some hard plastics that disappointed us. We expect that the Voyager's fit and finish will be similar to its mechanical sibling's.

The Voyager offers generous space for the driver and passengers, but it's limited to a seven-passenger configuration, and there are no folding armrests.

Voyager drivers will get the same generous array of well-labeled knobs and big buttons that make the Pacifica easy to command today. It has a dial knob gear selector that we have found easy to use, although there is a risk that drivers could mistake it for the large radio volume knob.

The Voyager comes with Chrysler's Uconnect 4 infotainment system , with a 7-inch touch screen. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility is standard. Sound is piped through six speakers, and the cabin is hushed with active noise cancellation. An optional overhead DVD player (shown below) is available on the LX trim—maybe the kids can use it to catch up on all the "Toy Story" and "Men in Black" movies that came before.  

What Drives It

The Voyager is powered by Chrysler's 3.6-liter V6 engine, here making 287 hp. It is matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission. This combination returned 21 mpg overall in the Pacifica we tested.

For contrast, the Voyager's cousin, the Dodge Grand Caravan, gets a meager 17 mpg overall, signaling that it's from another era.  

Safety and Driver Assist Systems

The Voyager does not offer forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, or adaptive cruise control. At least blind spot warning is an option. We are disappointed that those features are not even available as options—a notable omission for a new 2020 model. Those features are not available on the 2019 Pacifica L or LX, either. There is a SafetyTec Group option that adds blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert. (Read " Car Safety Systems That Could Save Your Life .") 

The Pacifica did well in our tests, and offering a cheaper version of it should help more families looking for budget three-row transportation.

The only issue that prevents us from recommending the Pacifica is its subpar reliability, and that's likely to carry over to the Voyager.

What's New for 2020?

The Voyager joins Chrysler's lineup for 2020, but we hesitate to call it "new." This seven-passenger minivan draws its name from a long-dead Plymouth model and everything else from the Pacifica.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2020 Chrysler Voyager starts at $28,480 and goes up to $31,290 depending on the trim and options.

Unless you're prepared to go with the barest-boned minivan on the market, we recommend you look at the LX. While neither trim provides much in the way of amenities, the LX at least offers a more compliant suspension tune than the L as well as automatic headlamps, aluminum wheels (instead of steel), three-zone manual climate control, and superior exterior lighting. Plus, if you want options such as remote start, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, satellite radio, and/or a built-in DVD player to entertain the kiddos, the LX is the only way to go.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Mechanically, the Voyager is identical to the Pacifica, using the same 287-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine and nine-speed automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. In our testing, the Pacifica managed a 7.3-second sprint to 60 mph. Given this van forgoes some of the features that weigh down its brother, the Voyager likely weighs less than the Pacifica and thus has the potential to beat that time. Don't hold your breath for a hybrid. Chrysler will reserve that powertrain for the pricier minivan in its lineup.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

We haven't had the opportunity to test the Voyager on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy loop, but for reference, the last nonhybrid Pacifica we tested achieved 31 mpg. The Chrysler vans both earn EPA estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The Voyager's 22 mpg combined score betters those of the Kia Sedona and Toyota Sienna and matches that of the Honda Odyssey , all chief competitors.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As with the exterior styling, powertrain, and chassis, the Voyager's interior mimics that of the Pacifica, albeit with fewer creature comforts. You won't find leather seats, in-dash navigation, automatic climate control, or power-sliding side doors here. What's more, the Voyager provides Stow 'n Go capability only for the rear bench seats. If you want the second row to fold into the floor, you'll need to shell out at least $35,540 for the base Pacifica. You can, however, tuck away valuables in the underfloor cubbies in front of the captain's chairs if you opt for the LX trim. Behind the third row, the Voyager boasts the same 32 cubic feet of cargo volume as the Pacifica. So while we have yet to put this van through our practical space tests, we feel safe saying that the Voyager will be able accommodate what its brother could (i.e., 12 carry-on suitcases with the rear seats up).

Infotainment and Connectivity

Chrysler provides a 3.5-inch digital display in the gauge cluster, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the center stack, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a six-speaker audio system with active noise cancellation. Either trim level provides Bluetooth streaming and integrated voice control, but only the Voyager LX allows for SiriusXM radio. Need to entertain the little ones? A rear-seat overhead DVD player can be had on the LX for $995.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Voyager achieved a five-star rating —the highest possible—from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in each of its crash-test measures. Chrysler attributes the van's crashworthiness, at least in part, to the abundance of high-strength steel in the Voyager's body structure. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has yet to test the Voyager, but the Pacifica performed well in most areas . Looking for driver-assistance features ? You won't find many in the Voyager and nothing of the like is offered as standard. Key safety features include:

• Available rear parking sensors with rear automated emergency braking
• Available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Chrysler's warranty coverage is fairly typical for the class. The Sienna offers more value here in the form of a two-year/25,000-mile complimentary scheduled maintenance plan.

2020 Chrysler Voyager First Look Review: Reviving A Budget Winner

Remember the affordable Plymouth brand? Chrysler does.

Remember the Plymouth Voyager? Yeah, the dismal minivan your parents probably used to tote you around during your childhood. You thought you'd probably never have to see another one again, except maybe at a scrapyard, but now it's making a comeback (sort of). The Plymouth brand hasn't been building cars for almost two decades now but its parent company Chrysler is bringing back the Voyager name for the 2020 model year to act as a base model minivan below the Pacifica.

The 2020 Chrysler Voyager will essentially replace the Dodge Grand Caravan, which is still sold as a budget-conscious and fleet-friendly option under the more-consumer-oriented Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid . Changing the name on the back of a Pacifica may not seem like a major change but this new Voyager has some major implications for Chrysler's lineup.

Exterior: This Is A New Model?

The Voyager is now just the third model in Chrysler's lineup, which is quickly become one of the least relevant in the FCA umbrella with the highly-rated Pacifica minivan and the aging 300 sedan. It looks just like a lower-trim Pacifica, which makes sense because the Voyager formally replaces the Pacifica L and LX trim levels. We wouldn't expect anything more or less from the Voyager but for its affordable price point, the exterior doesn't look half bad. The Voyager remains one of the more attractive minivan options on the market.

Interior: Just The Essentials

Since this is less expensive than the Pacifica, the interior won't be filled with FCA's greatest technology features. Advanced driver aids like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control will not be available but blind-spot monitoring and parking assist will be sold as optional equipment. The LX trim even adds some semi-luxurious features like heated cloth seats, a heated steering wheel, an optional rear DVD player, and a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen Uconnect infotainment system (replacing a smaller seven-inch screen).

Cargo: SUVs Be Darned

Chrysler hasn't published official cargo capacity figures but this is a minivan after all, so it should be cavernous inside. The Pacifica offers 32.3 cubic feet of space behind the third row and up to 140.5 with the second and third rows folded. To save costs, consumer-spec Voyager models will not include Chrysler's handy Stow 'n' Go seats but they will be available on the fleet-only LXi trim, which also adds leatherette seats, remote start, a roof rack, second-row sunshades, an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Powertrain: Nothing Mini Under The Hood

Don't expect anything new or updated under the hood. Like the Pacifica, the Voyager is powered by Chrysler's 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 producing 287 horsepower going out to the front wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy should be the same as the outgoing Pacifica L, which was rated at 18-mpg in the city and 28-mpg on the highway.

Pricing: Plymouth Would Be Proud

Pricing for the 2020 Voyager is set to start at $28,480 for the base L trim. The LX starts at $31,290 while the LXi trim, which is only available to fleet companies, starts at $34,490. This is about $300 less than the least expensive 2019 Pacifica and about $1,400 more than the much older Dodge Grand Caravan, which is set to be phased out after 2020 despite strong sales.

Will It Sell?

Judging by how the Grand Caravan is by far Dodge's best-selling model , the Chrysler Voyager stands to sell in tremendous numbers. Families on a budget need transportation and the Voyager should fill this need at an affordable price. Large SUVs like the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade are both more expensive than the Voyager and don't offer as much cargo space. It may not be "cool" to drive a minivan but they still serve a purpose and in many ways are a lot more practical than SUVs and crossovers.

One of the main reasons why you should avoid this model year is the problematic transmission.

A frustrated owner claimed their van produced a whistling sound after the warranty of 30,000 miles ran out at 40,000 miles. Eventually, the transmission just failed to shift. Even though the dealership fixed it, the transmission acted up again at 103,000 miles. Replacing or rebuilding the transmission may cost you thousands.

A complainant reported that while cruising at 50 mph, the lights inexplicably began to flash on and off, and ultimately turned off completely. This issue first occurred when the car had approximately 30,000 miles on the odometer, and according to the complainant, it has progressively worsened since its onset.

Regardless, such reports are infrequent and primarily consist of minor issues.

2020-2022 Chrysler Voyager

In 2020, Chrysler brought back the voyager after a long hiatus. This time, the Chrysler Voyager was slotted below its more popular sibling, the Pacifica, and marketed as the lower-cost offering.

Buy: 2020 Chrysler Voyager

The return of the Voyager was met with positive reception from customers and critics alike. CarandDriver gave the 2020 Voyager a respectable rating of 8.5 out of 10, citing affordable pricing and good fuel economy as the minivan’s strengths.

Under the hood, the 2020 Voyager was identical to the Pacifica, housing a 3.6-liter V6 engine that delivers 287 horsepower and offers a good balance of power and efficiency. Like other minivans, the Voyager provides plenty of room for passengers and cargo. It can seat up to seven passengers and features Chrysler’s innovative Stow ‘n Go seating for added cargo flexibility.

As a relatively newer model, there’s little data about the Voyager’s reliability. As such, there are little to no complaints regarding this model year. Safety-wise, the 2020 Voyager had an impressive performance in NHTSA’s various crashworthiness tests and earned a 5-star overall safety rating . The 2020 Voyager includes a rearview camera as a standard feature, with available advanced safety features like rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

2023 Chrysler Voyager LX

Good, but did not buy.

We did not buy from them. The one year old car with 30,000+ miles on it was priced above the norm, even by Kelley Blue Book standards. No negotiations available. So didn't buy. Nothing more. I'd recommend people to try, it doesn't hurt. But just be weary, you lose 3 years worth of manufacturer warranty, in just one year. Buying process, quality of repairs, facilities rated 3's, because it wouldn't submit as "n/a". So these are not a true rating. Wanted to rate "n/a".
