Extend your stay

If you haven't arrived yet or you're having a great time and want to stay longer, you may be able to extend your reservation.

Before your arrival or during your trip

To extend your trip, you can message your Host and ask if they can accommodate a longer stay, or you can simply send them a change request.

Changing your dates or number of guests

The Host will have to accept any changes submitted. If your Host doesn’t accept, try sending them a message reminding them to review your alteration request.

  • Click Trips and click the trip you want to change
  • Click Change reservation
  • Change the dates of your stay or the number of guests and click Save
  • Review your changes and then click Send request
  • Tap Change reservation
  • Change the dates of your stay or the number of guests and tap Save
  • Review your changes and then tap Send request
  • Tap Trips and tap the trip you want to change

Once you send the request, the Host will receive a notification to approve or decline your request.

If your Host accepts your change request, your reservation will be updated and you’ll be charged for the extra time. If your Host can’t extend your stay or if they don’t respond, your checkout date will stay the same.

After your trip

If your reservation has ended, it’s too late to make a change request. What you can do, though, is send a new trip request to your Host.

Extending Airbnb Stay – All You Need to Know

Quick Navigation

1. Contact the Host

2. check availability, 3. flexible dates, 4. read and follow the rules, 5. formal agreement, 6. positive guest record, 7. ask early, 8. offer to pay a premium, 9. be mindful of local regulations and taxes, 10. seek alternatives if extension is not possible.

As the popularity of Airbnb continues to soar, more and more travelers are seeking extended stays to immerse themselves in the local culture and explore new destinations at a leisurely pace.

Extending Airbnb Stay - All You Need to Know

However, securing an extension at an Airbnb requires more than just booking a few extra nights.

The key lies in fostering a positive relationship with your host, as clear and respectful communication can work wonders in persuading them to accommodate your request.

In this article, we will provide you with a guide on all you need to know if you’re extending your Airbnb stay.

Let’s dive in!

Contacting the host is the first step in attempting to extend your stay at an Airbnb. It is essential to reach out as early as possible, ideally well before your initial reservation is set to end.

This gives the host ample time to consider your request and make any necessary adjustments to their booking calendar.

When contacting the host , use the Airbnb messaging platform or the preferred method of communication they have specified.

Be polite, respectful, and clear in your message. Begin by expressing your gratitude for the accommodation and the pleasant experience you’ve had so far.

Then, mention your interest in extending your stay and briefly outline the reason for your request.

Avoid making assumptions about the host’s availability or willingness to accommodate your request. Instead, ask if an extension is possible and let them know that you would appreciate their consideration.

Before asking for an extension, it is essential to check the availability of the Airbnb property for the dates you wish to extend.

The host’s calendar will show their current bookings , and this information will help you plan accordingly.

If the property is already booked for the dates you want to extend, it might be challenging for the host to accommodate your request.

However, if there are gaps between existing bookings, there may be a higher chance of securing the extension during those periods.

Being flexible with your travel dates can significantly increase your chances of getting your stay extended.

Inquire with the host if there are any periods where the property is not booked or if there are any upcoming cancellations.

If you can adjust your travel plans to fit into these gaps, the host may find it more feasible to accommodate your extension.

Additionally, if you have a rough idea of the duration you’d like to extend your stay, but the exact dates are not fixed, discuss this with the host.

They might be able to suggest alternative periods that align with their booking schedule.

Before attempting to extend your stay at an Airbnb, it’s crucial to thoroughly read and understand Airbnb’s policies regarding reservation changes and extensions.

Each property may have specific rules and guidelines for handling such requests. These policies can be found in the host’s listing description or house rules section.

Familiarizing yourself with these rules will give you a clear understanding of what is allowed and how to proceed with your request.

Some hosts may have a strict cancellation or modification policy, while others may be more flexible. Understanding the rules will help you navigate the process smoothly and avoid any potential misunderstandings.

Extending Airbnb Stay - All You Need to Know

A formal agreement to extend your stay in an Airbnb involves clear communication with the host regarding the desire for additional days and agreeing on terms.

It includes discussing the duration, revised pricing, and any other relevant conditions. A written agreement via Airbnb’s messaging system ensures both parties understand and consent to the extension.

It fosters transparency, avoids misunderstandings, and promotes a professional approach to altering the reservation.

Remember to respect the host’s decision and adhere to their policies, as a formal agreement establishes a fair and trustworthy relationship between the guest and host.

A positive guest record can significantly impact your chances of being allowed to extend your stay. Hosts value responsible and respectful guests who treat their property with care and adhere to house rules .

If you have been a model guest during your current stay, it creates a sense of trust between you and the host.

Positive reviews from previous hosts can also work in your favor. When a host sees that you have a history of being a reliable guest, they are more likely to consider your extension request.

Always remember to respect the property and the neighborhood, keep the space clean, and be mindful of the host’s guidelines.

Asking for an extension early is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it shows consideration for the host’s schedule and other potential guests.

If you wait until the last minute, the host may have already made plans for the property, or other guests may have booked the dates you are interested in.

By inquiring about an extension well in advance, you give the host enough time to evaluate the availability and consider your request.

It also allows them to adjust their booking calendar accordingly and prevents any potential conflicts with future reservations.

Moreover, asking early demonstrates your commitment to staying longer and your enthusiasm for the property. Hosts are more likely to accommodate guests who show genuine interest and plan ahead.

If you find that the host is hesitant about extending your stay, one way to sweeten the deal is to offer to pay a higher nightly rate for the additional days.

While some hosts might be concerned about the potential loss of revenue from blocking out dates for your extension, a higher payment could serve as an incentive for them to accommodate your request.

When making this offer, be reasonable with the premium you propose. Check the local prices for similar accommodations to ensure you are offering a fair amount.

Remember that the goal is to create a win-win situation where both you and the host benefit from the extended stay.

Extending Airbnb Stay All You Need to Know

As you plan to extend your stay, it is crucial to be mindful of any local regulations or taxes that might apply. Some cities or regions may have specific laws regarding short-term rentals and maximum length of stays.

Additionally, there might be local taxes or fees associated with extended stays that you need to consider.

Before making any arrangements, research the local laws and regulations governing Airbnb rentals in the area you are staying.

If you have any doubts, you can consult Airbnb’s customer support or seek advice from the host regarding local rules and taxes. Complying with these regulations ensures a smooth and legal extension of your stay.

Despite your best efforts, there might be instances when the host cannot accommodate your request for an extension. If this is the case, it’s essential to be understanding and consider alternative options.

You can explore nearby Airbnb listings or hotels for the additional days you wish to stay.

If you’ve enjoyed your current location and experience, ask the host if they can recommend any similar properties in the area that might have availability for your desired dates.

Remember that flexibility is key in travel planning, and sometimes unexpected changes can lead to new and exciting opportunities.

Overall, extending your Airbnb stay can offer numerous advantages, such as cost savings, reduced hassle of moving to a new location, and the opportunity to further immerse yourself in the local culture.

By following the guidelines and tips outlined in this article, you can make the most of your extended stay and create unforgettable memories in your chosen destination. Happy traveling!

Airbnb is a vacation rental website that changed the travel industry in many ways by building a home-sharing community.

With Airbnb, you can book an entire place or reserve a room in someone else’s home for family getaways, workaways and group travel. Whether you're looking for a boutique hotel, a forest cabin or a UFO-shaped home, Airbnb has got you covered with its more than 6 million listings.

Unfortunately, Airbnb doesn’t offer a loyalty program and doesn’t offer frequent-traveler promotions. But there are still ways to get an Airbnb for cheaper.

Does Airbnb offer discounts?

For years, Airbnb offered cash bonuses through its referral program to both the referee and a first-time Airbnb user. Unfortunately, the referral program is no longer active, and you can’t share referral codes with your friends anymore.

Now that the Airbnb referral program is done, you might wonder, "How can I get a discount on Airbnb?" Luckily, you can take advantage of several money-saving methods.

7 ways to get discounts on Airbnb

1. reserve a longer stay.

Many hosts offer discounts when you reserve their place for a week or a month, so if you’re wondering how to get discounts on Airbnb, one of the answers is to book a longer stay.

If you have a lot of time off or work remotely, we recommend booking an Airbnb for at least seven days to get a weekly discount or at least 28 days to get a monthly discount.

The discount isn’t a fixed percentage and varies. Some hosts don’t offer it at all, so the only way to find out how much a long-term discount will be is to start your search on Airbnb.com.

The discount is applied automatically, so you won’t see it reflected until you click on the listing. Under price details, you should see the nightly price multiplied by the number of nights, a weekly or monthly stay discount, a cleaning fee (if one is charged) and an Airbnb service fee.

The monthly discount is typically much higher than the weekly discount, so you can save a lot of money by booking a longer stay.

2. Extend your trip by a few nights

Use the trick above to your advantage and extend your stay by several days even if you don’t need that many nights. Sometimes, broadening a booking window can decrease your total price if you fall into the sweet weekly or monthly discount spot.

Let’s take a look at an example. We found a 24-night stay at an Airbnb property that costs $1,127.

airbnb extend trip

However, by extending the stay to 31 nights instead, the price drops to $612, which makes a huge difference for your budget.

airbnb extend trip

You can apply the same thinking to shorter stays (around a week). Extending your stay by a day can either yield savings or get you another night for the same price as before.

We found an example of a six-night stay and a seven-night stay charging roughly the same amount of money after the weekly discount was applied to the seven-night stay.

3. Book recently added properties

If booking an Airbnb with no reviews terrifies you, the platform offers a way to offset the fears by offering a special discount.

You can get a special offer by booking a stay for a recently added Airbnb listing. The first three bookings made on a new listing receive a discount. You can stack the weekly or monthly discounts with special offers, as well.

However, it might be risky, especially when you don't know what to expect from the vacation rental or the host.

Scroll down to the host to see if they have other listings and read the reviews left for those properties. Seeing positive reviews for the host and their other listings can put your mind at ease.

4. Take advantage of an early bird discount

Some hosts attach an early bird discount to their listings. Each host sets their own timeline for how far in advance you have to book to get the early bird discount, but it can be as few as 60 days, so you don’t have to plan your next vacation a year in advance.

If you are booking far in advance — a year out or so — familiarize yourself with the property’s cancellation policy to avoid surprises in case you need to cancel.

Even if the discount is small, anything helps with getting a more afforable Airbnb.

Purchase discounted Airbnb gift cards

Another way to get a more affordable Airbnb is to buy discounted Airbnb gift cards.

Although this method won’t save you a ton of money, you can still save a few bucks, especially when you take advantage of the previously mentioned discounts too.

airbnb extend trip

You can purchase discounted Airbnb gift cards on websites like Sam’s Club or Raise and save a little cash. For example, a $200 Airbnb gift card is going for $193.92 from Sam’s Club and for $188.69 from Raise.

5. Use a rewards card to pay for Airbnb

If you hold the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or the American Express® Green Card , they earn 3 points per dollar on spending in the travel category, so make sure to use one of them to pay for your Airbnb reservation. Terms apply.

It won’t get you an immediate discount, but you’ll earn the rewards toward a future points redemption.

Another suggestion is to use specific credit cards to purchase Airbnb gift cards at stores and earn a rewards multiplier. For example, buying digital Airbnb gift cards from Staples will earn 5% back — on the first $25,000 spent — with the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card .

6. Book through an airline portal

This isn’t a direct way to save cash per se, but several airlines offer ways to earn frequent-flyer miles on Airbnb stays. Earning airline rewards is akin to getting a small discount on an Airbnb booking.

You’ll earn airline miles by making Airbnb reservations through the following airline programs.

Keep in mind that to earn airline miles, you must go through the airline’s respective portal they have in partnership with Airbnb. Make sure to enter your frequent-flyer number at the time of booking or no miles will be awarded.

7. Message the host

This is by no means a guaranteed method of receiving a discount on your Airbnb stay, but in the words of the great Wayne Gretzky, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” It’s possible to contact an Airbnb host before you make a booking through their listing.

So, if you’re on Airbnb wondering how to get a discount, message a host and ask whether they’d come down on the price before you reserve a stay. If they agree, they’ll send you an offer via a special link, and you can see the new rate before you lock down the reservation.

This approach might not work with every host, but it’s worth a shot, especially on short-notice bookings.

Be polite and respectful to the host when requesting an Airbnb discount, even if they decline your request.

A recap of how to get Airbnb discounts

The cost of travel has increased significantly over the past year, according to NerdWallet's Travel Price Index , so we don’t blame you if you're looking to save money. If you’re looking for an Airbnb discount, you can get one by:

Booking an extended stay.

Adding some days to your booking.

Booking new-host listings.

Taking advantage of early bird pricing.

Purchasing discounted Airbnb gift cards.

Using a rewards card to pay for your Airbnb.

Booking an Airbnb through an airline portal.

Messaging the host.

At least one of these options, or multiple, will let you score an Airbnb property for less.

Insider Today

If you're thinking about relocating your home office, you're not alone. According to Airbnb , more travelers are now searching the platform for stays longer than 28 days, and over 80 percent of hosts  are now offering long-term stay options.

On Airbnb, hosts are free to set both stay limits and minimums, as well as discount options for anyone booking their listing for weeks or even months at a time. Not only does the discount part incentivize someone looking for a longer stay to choose a particular listing, but it also means that the hosts will have a lower turnover rate, which often translates into less work for them.

While long-term Airbnb listings will show up in a standard search, you can also more easily find them by going directly through the website's sublet hub . This will bring up only listings where hosts have agreed to allow stays of a month or longer. But be aware that not every long-term stay is discounted.

Renting an Airbnb for a longer stay has numerous benefits. Firstly, it can be cheaper than a typical lease and is totally adjustable to your travel plans. For example, if you're arriving somewhere on March 18th and leaving on April 28th, you can often still enjoy a discounted stay without needing to pay for any unused days. On top of that, hosts must prove that their listing is really livable for a long-term stay, which means all long-term Airbnb listings come equipped with a full kitchen and strong Wi-Fi at a minimum.

However, before you commit to living the digital nomad life via Airbnb, bear in mind that there's no guarantee of safety for travel right now. We always recommend following guidance from the CDC, practicing social distancing, wearing masks in public areas, washing hands frequently, and practicing extra precaution if you plan to travel to or from a hot spot area.

That said, if you are looking to relocate or take a longer trip that includes both work and play, you can potentially save some cash by booking through Airbnb and enjoy the benefit of knowing that every listing must adhere to Airbnb's Enhanced Cleaning . Not to mention, it's an easy way to earn travel points on your credit card .

Overall, booking your next sublet through Airbnb can be a great deal, but there are a few things you should know ahead of time.

What's the minimum number of days needed to book a long-term Airbnb?

Long-term Airbnb discounts start at bookings of 28 days or more. You don't have to book for the first of the month, but the days do have to be continuous, so if someone's already booked a weekend in between your desired dates, it won't work. It is entirely up to the host to decide whether or not they will offer their listing for longer stays and they can set the minimum stay for 30 or 31 days if they are specifically targeting long-stay renters.

Airbnb hosts also have the option of setting weekly or monthly discounts and the percentage of that discount is entirely up to them. When browsing Airbnb with your dates selected, you will be able to tell which listings offer discounts because of the strikethrough in the price. When you click through to the listing, you'll be able to see the percentage discount displayed in the price summary.

Discounts can vary immensely. For example, this studio apartment in Austin offers a 25% discount while in New York City, this Chelsea studio is 50% off, and discounts can go even higher than that. Just look at this cabin in Bryson City, North Carolina , which normally goes for $332 per night but is offering an 82% discount if you book for the month. Of course, it's always possible that a host could be inflating the price to attract bookers with a big discount number, so you'll have to do your due diligence to determine if the listing is really worth what they're saying.

The discounted rate does not apply to any extra fees, including the service fee, which can be higher depending on how long you book your stay. Occupancy taxes may apply depending on the state and these will also increase depending on how many days you book. If there is a cleaning fee, this should be similar to what you'd pay for a short-term rental, but the host may increase the cost if they are exclusively listing for long-term stays.

While booking a sublet through Airbnb has its benefits beyond the discount (like not having to pay a security deposit or worry about utility bills), it's also not a traditional rental situation. Unlike an apartment that you might see in-person before making a decision, you often are not able to see a particular listing before you decide to book.

Airbnb encourages users to ask the hosts questions about the listing through their private messaging system and complete their booking before meeting in-person. You could always try asking your host if you could visit in person before you commit, but they don't have to comply.

Unlike many short-term stays, you don't have to pay for your whole stay upfront if you are staying for multiple months. After you've booked your reservation, you'll pay for the first month  as a downpayment. Then, after you check-in, you'll then be charged monthly throughout your stay. The price is locked in when you book, so you don't have to worry about rates going up halfway through your reservation.

If you make any reservation that is 28 days or longer, your reservation is only fully refundable for up to 48 hours after you book. This doesn't give you much wiggle room to change your mind and if you do cancel outside of that short window, you will still have to pay for the first 30 days  of your reservation and the service fee.

If you check-in and decide to cancel after your trip has begun, you will not be refunded for the next 30 days after your cancellation. If you have extenuating circumstances that fall under Airbnb's Extenuating Circumstances Policy , it may be possible to appeal for a full refund. If you are not confident in your travel plans, booking an Airbnb for a month or longer can be risky.

Because of varying tenant laws, your host may ask you to sign a contract  before confirming your reservation. If this is the case, the host will be required to disclose this information to you before confirming your booking. If your host asks you to sign a contract after the fact, it's within your right to decline and to ask them to cancel your reservation.

Local legislation regarding how hotels and long-term apartments should be run vary widely and Airbnb hosts in different cities may need a different level of commitment from guests before the stay is confirmed. Because your host will be required to disclose this to you before you commit to the booking, make sure you take ample time to review the document and seek counsel or find another booking if something doesn't seem right.

Imagine waking up to a stunning sunrise over a new city, unpacking your bags in a cozy living room, and truly settling in for an extended stay that feels like home. This is the magic of long-term stays on Airbnb.

In recent years, Airbnb has evolved from being a platform primarily for short getaways to a welcoming space for travelers seeking extended stays that last for weeks or even months. Whether you're a digital nomad, relocating for work, or simply exploring a new city in-depth, long-term stays on Airbnb offer unique opportunities and experiences .

In this article, we'll delve into the world of extended guest stays on Airbnb . We'll share valuable insights, tips, and considerations to ensure your long-term stay is comfortable, enjoyable, and memorable. Whether you're a seasoned Airbnb guest or planning your first extended adventure, this guide is here to help you make the most of your extended Airbnb experience.

So, let's embark on a journey of discovery and find out how to transform an extended stay into a home away from home.

I. Benefits of Long-Term Stays

Ii. finding the right long-term airbnb, iii. negotiating and booking, iv. preparing for your long-term stay, v. making the most of your long-term stay, vi. handling challenges, vii. extending your stay or checking out, viii. wanna stay longer at airbnb, a. cost savings.

One of the primary advantages of opting for long-term stays on Airbnb is the potential for significant cost savings . When compared to traditional hotels or short-term rentals, booking an extended stay often comes with substantial discounts. Hosts frequently offer reduced nightly rates for guests planning extended visits, making it a cost-effective choice for those seeking extended accommodations.

But the savings don't stop there. Long-term guests can also benefit from lower utility costs. Airbnb rentals typically include essential utilities like electricity, water, and gas within the rental fee, providing further financial relief. Plus, having access to a kitchen allows guests to prepare their meals, cutting down on dining expenses.

How to Increase Visibility for Your Airbnb Listing

Table 1: Sample Cost Comparison

B. comfort and convenience.

Long-term stays on Airbnb offer a level of comfort and convenience that traditional accommodations may struggle to match. Guests can enjoy the privacy and coziness of a fully furnished home or apartment, complete with separate living spaces, bedrooms, and often, additional amenities like private outdoor areas.

Having access to a kitchen allows guests to prepare their meals, providing not only financial savings but also the convenience of home-cooked food. This is especially valuable for individuals with dietary restrictions or specific culinary preferences.

List of Amenities for Added Comfort:

  • Spacious living areas
  • Well-equipped kitchens
  • Private outdoor spaces (patios, balconies, gardens)
  • Washer and dryer facilities
  • Free Wi-Fi access
  • Streaming services (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.)

C. Immersion in Local Culture

Extended stays allow guests to immerse themselves in the local culture and lifestyle . Unlike short visits, where the focus may be on ticking off tourist attractions, long-term guests can take their time to explore the neighborhood, discover hidden gems , and engage with the community.

This immersive experience can lead to a deeper appreciation of the destination, as guests have the opportunity to forge connections with locals, frequent neighborhood businesses, and participate in local events or activities. It's an enriching way to experience a destination beyond its tourist veneer.

List of Ways to Immerse in Local Culture:

  • Visiting neighborhood markets
  • Dining at local eateries
  • Participating in community events
  • Taking language or cultural classes
  • Joining local clubs or groups

D. Flexibility

Long-term stays offer an unparalleled level of flexibility . Guests have the freedom to set their pace, whether it's working remotely, exploring the area, or simply relaxing and enjoying their temporary home. This flexibility can be especially appealing to digital nomads, remote workers, or anyone seeking a break from the constraints of a typical nine-to-five routine.

Moreover, Airbnb's extensive global network ensures that long-term stays are available in a wide variety of locations, from bustling urban centers to tranquil rural retreats. This means you can tailor your extended stay to your specific preferences, whether you're seeking the excitement of a big city or the serenity of a countryside escape.

Decorating Your Airbnb for Maximum Impact: How to Create a Lasting Impression

When it comes to planning an extended stay on Airbnb, finding the perfect accommodation is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here are some essential steps to help you find the right long-term Airbnb rental:

A. Setting Your Budget

Before you start your search, it's important to determine your budget for the long-term stay. Consider how much you're willing to spend each month on accommodation. Keep in mind that long-term rentals often offer discounted rates compared to shorter stays. Setting a clear budget will help you narrow down your options and make informed choices.

B. Location Considerations

Location is a key factor when choosing a long-term Airbnb rental. Think about the purpose of your stay. Are you looking for a central city location, a quiet suburban neighborhood, or a rural retreat? Consider proximity to your workplace, amenities, public transportation, and recreational activities. Research different neighborhoods to find the one that best suits your needs and preferences.

C. Reading Reviews

One of the advantages of using Airbnb is the ability to read reviews from previous guests. Reviews provide valuable insights into the quality of the accommodation and the hosting experience. Pay attention to reviews from guests who stayed for an extended period, as their feedback can give you a sense of what to expect over a longer stay. Look for consistently positive reviews regarding cleanliness, communication, and overall satisfaction.

D. Communicating with Hosts

Effective communication with the host is essential, especially for long-term stays. Reach out to potential hosts with any questions or specific requirements you may have. Ask about amenities, house rules, and any special arrangements you might need. Clear and open communication from the beginning can help ensure a smooth and pleasant long-term stay.

By following these steps and considering your budget, location, reviews, and communication with hosts, you'll be well on your way to finding the ideal long-term Airbnb rental.

Top Airbnb Hosting Tips to Maximize Your Income

Once you've found a suitable long-term Airbnb rental, the next step is negotiating the terms and making your booking. Here's what you need to know:

A. Discussing Rates and Discounts

Negotiating rates for a long-term stay is common and can lead to significant cost savings. Here's how to go about it:

  • Initiate the Conversation: Contact the host and express your interest in a long-term stay. Politely inquire about the possibility of a discounted monthly rate.
  • Highlight Your Reliability: Mention that you're a responsible guest who will take good care of the property. This can make hosts more inclined to offer a discount.
  • Flexibility: Be open to negotiation. Hosts may be willing to reduce rates if you're willing to be flexible with your check-in and check-out dates.
  • Timing: Timing can be crucial. If you're planning a long-term stay during the off-season or when demand is lower, hosts may be more willing to negotiate.

B. Setting Expectations

Clear communication and setting expectations are vital for a successful long-term stay:

  • Housekeeping: Discuss how often housekeeping will be provided. Some long-term rentals include periodic cleaning services, while others expect guests to manage their own cleaning.
  • Utilities: Clarify what utilities are included in the rental. Are electricity, water, internet, and cable TV part of the package, or will you be responsible for these expenses?
  • Maintenance: Inquire about how maintenance issues will be addressed during your stay. Hosts should have a plan for handling repairs promptly.

C. Understanding House Rules

Every Airbnb property has house rules, and it's essential to understand and respect them:

  • Pets: If you have pets or plan to get one during your stay, check whether the property is pet-friendly and review any pet-related rules.
  • Smoking: Clarify the smoking policy. Many rentals are smoke-free, and violating this rule can result in penalties.
  • Quiet Hours: Some properties have quiet hours to ensure a peaceful environment for all guests. Familiarize yourself with these hours and abide by them.
  • Guest Limit: Confirm the maximum number of guests allowed in the rental . Exceeding this limit can lead to eviction.

D. Making a Long-Term Booking

Once all details are negotiated and clarified, it's time to make your long-term booking:

  • Use the Airbnb Platform: It's recommended to make your booking through the official Airbnb platform. This provides a secure payment process and access to Airbnb's customer support in case of any issues.
  • Booking Confirmation: After making your payment, you'll receive a booking confirmation with all the details of your stay. Review it carefully to ensure accuracy.
  • Check-In and Check-Out: Coordinate with your host regarding check-in and check-out procedures. Discuss key exchange, access codes, and any other relevant information.

Negotiating rates, setting clear expectations, understanding house rules, and making your booking are crucial steps in preparing for your long-term stay on Airbnb. In the next section, we'll delve into preparing for your arrival and making the most of your extended stay.

Be Prepared for Emergencies with this Comprehensive Airbnb Hosting Emergency Checklist

As your long-term Airbnb stay approaches, thorough preparation can make your experience smoother and more enjoyable. Here's what you need to consider:

A. Packing Essentials

When packing for an extended stay, it's essential to bring along the right items:

B. Notifying Your Host

Before your arrival, it's courteous to inform your host of any special requirements or requests:

  • Check-In Time: Coordinate with your host regarding your expected check-in time, especially if it's outside regular hours.
  • Requests: If you have any specific requests or needs, such as an extra desk for work or additional cleaning supplies, discuss them with your host in advance.

C. Ensuring Connectivity

Staying connected is vital for work and leisure. Ensure you have a reliable internet connection:

  • Wi-Fi: Confirm the quality of the Wi-Fi connection in your rental. If necessary, inquire about upgrading the plan for a better connection.
  • Mobile Data: If you'll be using mobile data, check your provider's coverage in the area and consider any international data plans.

D. Creating a Work and Leisure Space

If you're working remotely during your stay, setting up a productive workspace is essential:

  • Desk and Chair: Ensure there's a comfortable workspace with an ergonomic chair and a suitable desk.
  • Lighting: Adequate lighting is crucial for work. If needed, bring a desk lamp.
  • Personal Touches: Personalize your workspace with items that inspire productivity and comfort.

Preparation is key to a successful long-term stay. By packing thoughtfully, communicating with your host, ensuring connectivity, and creating a suitable work and leisure space, you'll be well-equipped to enjoy your extended Airbnb experience.

A long-term stay offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and community. Here's how to make the most of it:

A. Establishing a Routine

Creating a daily routine can add structure and balance to your stay:

  • Work-Life Balance: If you're working remotely, establish a clear work schedule and adhere to it. Designate specific working hours and stick to them.
  • Healthy Habits: Incorporate regular exercise, healthy meals, and relaxation into your daily routine. Many Airbnb rentals offer fitness facilities or access to nearby parks for workouts.
  • Local Experiences: Allocate time for local experiences, whether it's trying regional cuisine, attending cultural events, or exploring nearby attractions.

B. Exploring Local Attractions

One of the perks of a long-term stay is the opportunity to be a temporary local. Take advantage of this by:

  • Researching Local Gems: Investigate the area's hidden gems and must-visit spots. Online resources, guidebooks, and recommendations from locals can help you discover these.
  • Outdoor Activities: If the location permits, engage in outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or water sports. National parks, nature reserves, and beaches are often nearby.
  • Cultural Experiences: Attend local cultural events, art exhibitions, music performances, and festivals to gain insight into the community's spirit.

C. Managing Housekeeping

Housekeeping is an essential aspect of a comfortable stay:

  • Cleaning Schedule: Communicate with your host about the cleaning schedule. Determine when housekeeping services will be provided and what areas will be cleaned.
  • Self-Care: For longer stays, consider incorporating some self-care routines. Keep your living space tidy and organized to enhance your well-being.

D. Staying Connected

Maintaining connections with both your host and the local community can enhance your experience:

  • Host Communication: Keep open lines of communication with your host. Address any concerns or questions promptly to ensure a smooth stay.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with the local community. Attend community events, support local businesses, and build connections with residents.

By establishing a routine, exploring local attractions, managing housekeeping effectively, and staying connected with your host and the community, you can make the most of your long-term Airbnb stay.

Long-term stays may come with their fair share of challenges, but being prepared can help you navigate them effectively.

A. Communication Issues

Effective communication is crucial during an extended stay:

  • Language Barrier: If you're in a location where the primary language is different from your own, consider learning some basic phrases. Translation apps can also be handy.
  • Host Communication: Maintain a strong line of communication with your host. If you encounter issues with the property or need assistance, reach out promptly.
  • Local Resources: Familiarize yourself with local resources, such as nearby hospitals, pharmacies, and emergency services, in case you require assistance.

B. Maintenance and Repairs

Over time, wear and tear can lead to maintenance issues. Here's how to address them:

  • Reporting Problems: If you notice any maintenance or repair issues in the property, report them to your host immediately. Timely reporting can prevent further damage.
  • Host Responsiveness: Assess your host's responsiveness to maintenance requests. A responsible host will prioritize your comfort.
  • Know Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with your rights as a guest. Airbnb's policies provide guidance on what to do in case of issues.

C. Homesickness

Extended stays away from home can sometimes lead to homesickness. Combat it with these strategies:

  • Personal Touches: Bring along items that remind you of home, such as photos or familiar décor.
  • Stay Connected: Regularly communicate with loved ones through video calls, messages, or even visits if possible.
  • Local Exploration: Engage in local activities and experiences to create new memories and reduce feelings of homesickness.

D. Safety and Security

Prioritizing safety and security is paramount:

  • Secure the Property: Ensure windows and doors are locked when you leave the property. If the property has security features, like an alarm system, use them.
  • Emergency Procedures: Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures, including evacuation routes and contact numbers for local authorities.
  • Travel Insurance: Consider obtaining travel insurance that covers health emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events.

By addressing communication issues, promptly reporting maintenance needs, managing homesickness, and prioritizing safety and security, you can effectively handle the challenges that may arise during your long-term stay on Airbnb.

As your long-term stay on Airbnb approaches its conclusion, there are several key considerations, from extending your stay to leaving a thoughtful review.

A. Discussing Extensions

Extending your stay can be a seamless process if handled correctly:

  • Early Communication: If you're interested in extending your stay, initiate discussions with your host well in advance. This allows them to plan accordingly.
  • Rate Negotiations: When discussing an extension, be prepared to negotiate rates. Longer stays often lead to lower nightly costs.
  • Terms and Agreements: Ensure all terms and agreements, including the duration of the extension and any rate adjustments, are documented and agreed upon by both parties.

B. Leaving a Review

Leaving a review is an essential part of the Airbnb experience:

  • Timely Review: Leave a review promptly after checking out. This provides valuable feedback to both your host and potential future guests.
  • Be Specific: Be specific in your review. Mention what you liked about the property, any outstanding hospitality, and if there were any areas that could be improved.
  • Constructive Feedback: If you encountered issues during your stay, frame them as constructive feedback rather than complaints. This helps hosts understand how they can enhance their offerings.

C. Checking Out Gracefully

Checking out is more than just packing your bags:

  • Property Inspection: Before leaving, conduct a thorough inspection of the property. Ensure you haven't left personal items behind and that the property is in good condition.
  • Follow Check-Out Procedures: Adhere to any check-out procedures outlined by your host, such as returning keys or remotes.
  • Express Gratitude: Express your gratitude to your host for the pleasant stay. A simple thank-you note can go a long way.

D. Reflecting on Your Long-Term Airbnb Experience

Take a moment to reflect on your extended stay:

  • What Did You Learn: Consider what you've learned during your stay, both about the destination and yourself.
  • Memories and Experiences: Reflect on the memories and experiences you've gained. Did you achieve your goals for the stay?
  • Future Plans: Think about your future travel plans . Has this experience influenced how you'll approach long-term stays in the future?

By discussing extensions, leaving an insightful review, checking out gracefully, and reflecting on your long-term Airbnb experience, you can wrap up your stay with a positive and memorable note.

As we conclude this guide, let's summarize the key takeaways for making the most of your extended guest stay on Airbnb:

A. Summarize the Key Takeaways

  • Planning Is Paramount: Careful planning is the foundation of a successful long-term stay. Set your budget, choose the right location, and thoroughly research hosts and properties.
  • Effective Communication: Open and transparent communication with your host is key. Discuss rates, expectations, and house rules beforehand to ensure a smooth experience.
  • Comfort and Routine: Create a comfortable living space and establish a routine to make your long-term stay feel more like home.

Hotel vs Airbnb | Which is Better for Your Trip?

W hen it comes to finding accommodations for your next trip, many travelers must weigh the pros and cons of booking a hotel vs Airbnb apartment. Both types of accommodations have their advantages and disadvantages that should be carefully considered before making a decision.

On one hand, hotels offer the convenience of on-site amenities and services, while alternatively, Airbnb rentals provide travelers the opportunity to live like a local.

This travel guide evaluates the pros and cons of booking a hotel vs Airbnb rental apartment to help you make an informed decision on which option is best for your next travel adventure.

What is the difference between an Airbnb and a hotel?

Airbnb is a booking website where you can rent apartments, condos, homes, and even a single bedroom in someone’s house, in some cases.

Although we used Airbnb exclusively for years to book apartments and vacation rentals for our trips, in recent years, we have switched to VRBO as our go-to booking platform.

Airbnb has come under heat in several cities like Venice, Italy and New York City for driving up the cost of rent for locals, making it unsustainable to live there.

Additionally, extra fees tacked onto the price by Airbnb hosts have increased the cost on the Airbnb platform making it less desirable of an option. But we’re already getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s first evaluate the pros and cons of booking an Airbnb vs a hotel.

Hotel vs Airbnb | Which is Better?

When planning a vacation, one of the most important decisions to make is where to stay. A great accommodation can make for a great trip, while a bad accommodation can ruin an otherwise good vacation.

Whether you’re looking for convenience, amenities, or budget-friendly accommodations, there are both benefits and drawbacks of booking a hotel vs an apartment when traveling.

Top 5 Benefits to Booking a Hotel

  • Generally Safer
  • Consistent Quality / Luxury
  • Convenience: Typically, More Centrally Located + 24 Hour Service
  • Amenities are usually provided
  • More socially responsible

Top 5 Benefits of Renting an Apartment or Airbnb

  • Feels More Authentic and Unique
  • More Spacious
  • Privacy (generally)
  • Can be Less Expensive (Although Not Always)
  • Provides the Comforts of Home

Closer Look at the Advantages of Booking Hotels

Although there are definite benefits to staying in an apartment when traveling, there are times hotels are, hands down, the better option.

Hotels are best for:

  • Short Stays
  • Business Travelers
  • Solo Travelers
  • Small families (3 people)

Let’s weigh the top advantages to hotel stays.

Whether you are booking a boutique hotel or a large chain hotel, there is a certain level of assurance that you are booking a safe lodging option. In most hotels, you can expect a deadbolt or a chain lock on the entry door to your hotel room.

Additionally, 24-hour desk operations, and in many instances security staff add another layer of safety for guests.

In contrast, an Airbnb or vacation rental is a private home or apartment. There is typically no security staff, front desk, or extra lock on the door to ensure no one can enter other than the tenant.

Consistency / Luxury

When traveling solo or as a couple, hotels can be a relaxing and pampering experience. In many cases, you know the quality to expect. Large hotel chains have a certain standard, albeit a bit sterile, that their hotel properties must uphold.

Additionally, many hotel chains offer loyalty programs that make hotels more affordable and desirable for frequent travelers.

Some hotels also offer a continental breakfast, which can save money on dining out while also providing a consistent start to your day while traveling.

Convenience

Another major factor when deciding between an apartment or hotel is location and convenience.

If you are looking to be close to tourist attractions, you can always find hotels within walking distance whereas apartments aren’t always as readily available. However, in most major cities, you can still find them fairly close to popular sites.

The check in process for a hotel is typically much easier than an apartment, as well. While some apartment owners will leave a key for you to let yourself in, others will not.

When staying in a vacation rental, you will likely have to call ahead to meet someone at the apartment to let you in, and walk you through the studio, go over any rules and features, and answer questions. This can be tricky when traveling internationally if you do not have the ability to make calls without acquiring international roaming charges.

Additionally, in hotels you often have 24-hour customer service, housekeeping or cleaning services, and concierge assistance.

Most hotels universally provide standard amenities, including shampoo and soap. If staying in a hotel with a baby or toddler , most hotels also provide a complimentary hotel crib or baby bed.

While this is standard practice in hotel chains, in Airbnbs and VRBOs amenities, even basic ones, aren’t always provided.

You may have to bring your own toiletries, like shampoo, conditioner, and soap, and will likely need to bring a travel crib for your baby, if one is not provided.

Luckily, you can find some fairly compact travel cribs that are great for babies and toddlers.

Socially Responsibility

As mentioned earlier, Airbnb has come under fire in recent years as investors have bought up apartments and condos in popular cities and turned them into vacation rentals.

This limits the housing market for locals, ultimately driving up the cost to live there beyond what many locals can afford.

The hotel industry, on the other hand, is considered more socially responsible and does not affect the local housing in communities. Hotels are zoned, approved, and intended for tourism, whereas private apartments and condos weren’t originally built to be vacation rentals, and take away housing options from locals.

Search hotels, read reviews, and find the best rates on Booking.com

Closer Look at the Advantages of Airbnb or Vacation Rentals

Whether you book a vacation rental on Airbnb or VRBO, there are several key reasons you may prefer it over a hotel.

Airbnbs or Vacation Rentals are best for:

  • Longer Stays
  • Digital Nomads
  • Large Families
  • Multi-generational Trips

Here is a detailed look at the benefits to staying in a vacation rental or Airbnb vs hotel room.

Authenticity

Renting a local apartment vs a hotel often provides a more authentic experience. You see how locals live and get to live like one during your stay.

The accommodations are typically more unique compared to the more sterile atmosphere of a chain hotel. Additionally, you get a better feel for a neighborhood and the community which can make you feel a deeper connection to or appreciation for a place you are visiting.

When deciding between an apartment or hotel, space is also a factor to consider. This is one of those benefits to renting an apartment vs hotel that I never thought about prior to parenthood.

My pre-kid mentality was that most of my time would be spent sightseeing, so even a cramped hotel room was plenty good enough. My post-kid mentality is a little different.

Anyone who has ever shared a single hotel room with a kid with a 7:30 p.m. bedtime will understand. An extra room is a must. For us, the extra space means we can stay up and enjoy the evening after our daughter goes to bed.

When we rent an apartment, we can actually sit and enjoy adult time in a living room, have a glass of wine and discuss all of the awesome things we did that day.

If you are someone who just likes having extra space when traveling, an apartment may provide that added area you desire.

While hotels may give you the luxury of meeting other travelers, they don’t offer the same level of privacy as a private home or apartment. When you rent an apartment, the noise level isn’t as much of a concern.

When staying in an apartment with a baby, you don’t have to worry as much about your jet lagged baby waking others up.

You don’t have to worry about them being too noisy. Your children can be their normal selves without being completely discourteous to others.

Cost / Price

Renting an apartment can actually be cheaper than a hotel, which will help you save money during your trip. This is especially the case if you are staying in a place longer than 3 days.

However, when renting a VRBO or Airbnb vs hotel, be sure to look at any additional fees. Often, hosts will tack on a substantial cleaning fee. Others might even add a service fee or fees for extra guests.

These hidden fees are not visible until after you click on the listing, so be sure to check for cleaning fees and other “junk fees” before you book.

Another cost savings comes in the benefit of having a kitchen. Unlike most hotels, vacation rentals have a kitchen, which means you can cook meals instead of dining out all the time.

Although hotels can offer a bit of luxury, apartments offer those traditional comforts that you would find in your own home.

A full kitchen to cook in, a washing machine and sometimes even a dryer to do laundry, a refrigerator to store food or keep breastmilk and formula fresh if you are traveling with some.

When considering whether to stay in an apartment or hotel, it’s good to take into account your child’s daily routine at home. Chances are, just the feel of an apartment will make a child feel more relaxed and comfortable in a new environment, as well. That will lead to better sleep for everyone!

Search for apartments and vacation rentals, read reviews, and compare rates at VRBO .

Conclusion AirBnB or Hotel: Which is best for you?

Nowadays, we stay in both hotel rooms and VRBOs about equally. But determining which is best for you depends on your individual travel style, the length and purpose of your visit, budget, and your destination.

When we were in our 20s, we would have never thought about renting an apartment when traveling. Hostels worked just fine. (Sometimes, hostels still work, even with kids . ) Of course, this was before the days of booking websites like Airbnb and VRBO , so finding an apartment to rent took extra effort.

The apartment vs hotel debate really became more prevalent when we became parents. Things are different traveling with kids. While hotels typically have all the amenities needed for kids, there are definitely benefits to renting an apartment vs. a hotel when traveling.

If you are staying in one place for an extended amount of time you may want to consider renting a vacation home if traveling with kids . Having an entire vacation home will give you even more space and comfort than hotels or even smaller apartments can offer.
