Things to do in My Tho

As with most destinations in the Mekong Delta, a boat trip is the best things to do in My Tho. My Tho is located on the mighty Mekong River, which has several branches with smaller rivers, which are then connected to each other by different channels. With a motorized boat you can travel great distances on the rivers and see a lot of the local river life, such as fishermen and boats that carry enormous amounts of fruit. Small traditional sampan boats row you through the smaller side channels through the palm forests.

When you sail from place to place you will see many fishermen along the way. The Mekong is known for large catfish, but there is also Tai Tuong (Elephant fish). This fish is actually farmed in huge tanks and is also found in the waters of the Delta.

2. Experience local life

Discovering local life can be perfectly combined with a boat trip. There are many small islands around My Tho that you can visit by boat. You can stop and walk around to meet the locals and learn about their daily life. Unicorn Island, for example, is a popular stop and there are more like Phoenix and Dragon island. On the islands you will find many fruit plantations for which the Mekong Delta is known. Here you can watch how the fruit is grown and you can try delicious seasonal fruit.

There are also many local factories and shops that produce their own products, such as the production of coconut candy. Turtle Island is a place where you can see this. Another local product is snake wine! The base is rice wine that is poured over a snake and left to ferment. Locals believe it has medicinal properties. There is a bee farm on Thoi Son, where you can buy local honey.

Another great way to explore My Tho is by bicycle. Cycling in the Mekong Delta is very popular, because the roads between the villages are very quiet with traffic and the land in the delta is very flat. Trees and plants along the road provide cooling shade and there are plenty of places to stop along the way. You can cycle to fruit orchards to try delicious fruit, local factories to see how they work and visit local villages to experience local life.

4. Vinh Trang Pagoda

Vinh Trang Pagoda is the largest temple in Tien Giang province, only 5 km from My Tho and built in 1849. The pagoda brings together Chinese, Vietnamese, Khmer and European architecture and features various Buddha statues. Vinh Trang has some impressive features, such as the ornate gate, built by Hue craftsmen, and detailed woodwork inside. It is especially impressive if you can arrive when the monks are singing around 10:00 am, followed by drumming and a ceremony to the dining room.

5. My tho market

By the time most travelers are still asleep, the vendors in My Tho’s central market (Cho My Tho) are already in full swing. An engaging walk through the market is a great way to fill the time in a city. Fish of all shapes and sizes splash around in large tubs, before meeting their executioners one by one who expertly prepare them to order. Seafood is plentiful in the Mekong Delta and it takes a lot of work to prepare.

6. Tan Thanh beach

For those who would like to go to the beach, this can be a great option. Tan Thanh beach is about 50 km from My Tho. It is a popular weekend getaway spot for Ho Chi Minh City youth.

7. Dong Tam snake farm

The Dong Tam snake farm is one of the largest suppliers of anti-poison in Vietnam. Run by the military, the medicinal, breeding and research center is set up like a small zoo and is open to the public for fundraising and awareness. Cobras, green snakes and large pythons can be seen up close, as well as a number of monkeys, bears, ostriches and a giant albino turtle. The animals are well cared for, but it is highly debatable whether the living conditions are not too limited, especially with our Western standards.

8. Cai Be floating market

As the name suggests, the Cai Be floating market is not located in My Tho but in Cai Be. But because this place is only 40 km from My Tho, these sights are often combined. This is the floating market in the Mekong Delta closest to Ho Chi Minh City. It is much smaller than the Cai Rang floating market near Can Tho, and has lost much of its size and charm due to the improved roads around the area. Surely it is nice to drop by early in the morning to see this wholesale market on the water.

How to get to My Tho

From Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho

Buses and limousine vans run from Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho. Most include hotel drop-off in My Tho, but no pick-up from your accommodation in Saigon. The journey takes 2 hours and costs between 2.5 EUR and 6 EUR depending on which transfer quality you choose.

Private car

Instead of by bus, you can also rent a car with a driver who will pick you up directly from the hotel in Ho Chi Minh City and take you to My Tho. The advantage is also that you can arrange with a driver to visit some of the sights along the way.

From other parts of the Mekong Delta

There are direct buses between other destinations in the Mekong Delta to My Tho:

• From Can Tho – 2 hours
• From Ha Tien – 6/7 hours

Accommodation in My Tho

Due to the increasing number of tourists, there are many motels, hotels and resorts to choose from. Here are some well-reviewed accommodations:

Getting around My Tho

Taxi – The most reliable taxi service in this city is Mai Linh Taxi.

Scooters / Motorbike – A motorbike is the most convenient means of transportation for traveling between attractions in My Tho. However, scooter rental in My Tho is not really popular. You can ask the hotel where you are staying to rent a scooter for 150,000 VND – 200,000 VND per day (8 – 12 USD).

Boat – If you want to visit the islands around the city, it is best to do this by boat. Many hotels and travel agencies offer a half day or day tour. You can also walk to the per yourself to rent a boat.

The dry season starts from the beginning of November to the end of April. The rainy season starts from May to the end of October. June and July in particular have the highest rainfall of the year, but fortunately the rains are short and often come in mid-afternoon.

Alternatives to My Tho

My Tho is a good introduction to the Mekong Delta, but also the most visited place due to its proximity to Ho Chi Minh City. If you don’t mind traveling a little further in a day trip, it is recommended to visit the less touristy Ben Tre (also a nice place to stay overnight). For two days or more, you can also go to Can Tho , where you have, among other things, the Cai Rang floating market , the largest floating market in the Mekong Delta. If you want more of the beaten track, choose the province of An Giang .

Location: My Tho is the capital city of Tien Giang Province. It is located on the north side of the downstream of the Tien River, in the Mekong Delta region of South Vietnam. It borders on Cho Gao in the North and West, Chau Thanh District in the East and Tien River & Ben Tre Province in the South.

My Tho, Vietnam

Settled in one of the most popular areas of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta Region, My Tho is the busy capital of the Tiên Giang Province. Just a short drive from other destinations like Cao Lanh, Vinh Long, and connected by bridge to Bên Tre, My Tho is frequented by travelers from Ho Chi Minh City.

Used as a weekend getaway for big-city dwellers, My Tho is famous for its rice fields, floating markets, and river islands.

Capital of the Tien Giang Province

Part of the Southern Key Economic Zone, My Tho was built and named after the My Tho River, which flows through the city. The abundance of water in the area has turned My Tho into an agricultural powerhouse where crops like rice, flowers, and fruit are grown throughout the year. Additionally, the city’s economy relies on tourism, education, and technology.

Many visitors will stop in the city during their tour of the region. Within a 2 hours’ drive from My Tho, tourists can also see the cities of Cao Lanh and Vinh Long. The closest city to My Tho that has also become a popular destination is Bên Tre . Connected by the Rach Miêu Bridge, My Tho and Bên Tre are just 23 minutes apart.

My Tho also happens to be relatively close to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). Only a 1.5-hour drive, travelers can easily cover the distance between Vietnam’s famous Southern city and My Tho. Private cars, taxis , and buses are the most direct way for travelers to get to My Tho from HCMC.

Once a part of Cambodia’s Khmer Empire, My Tho was founded by Chinese refugees in the 1680s. A colony of the Qing Empire, the Chinese settled in the area and built a small community. In the 18th century, My Tho was given to Vietnam and it was during this time that the settlement began to grow into one of Southern Vietnam’s largest commercial hubs.

The name for the city was taken from the My Tho River and depending on translations, it means either “Beautiful Tree” or “Beautiful Reed”.

By the 1860s, the French set their eyes on My Tho, and by 1862, they had captured the city. For almost 100 years, the French remained dominant throughout the area. Under French occupation, My Tho only became more popular with immigrants, which helped the city’s economy grow. Previously, the city was also named the “Gateway to Saigon”.

At one point, a train route established a direct connection between HCMC and My Tho. Opened in 1885, the route was the first railway established in Vietnam. Unfortunately, during the 1960s, the railway was destroyed and never reestablished.

Years after the French left and the Vietnam War ended, My Tho was classified as a Grade II, Class-1 City in 2005. Today, My Tho has multiple administrative divisions including 11 wards and 6 communes. The city has become a famous destination in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta Region , and it attracts numerous national and international tourists every year.

• There are 270,700 people living in My Tho as of 2019.
• Longan fruit, similar to lychee, is grown throughout My Tho.
• The city covers an area of 81.55 sq km (31.49 sq mi) along the bank of the My Tho River.

Main Attractions

My Tho City has such a variety of attractions for every kind of traveler. From cultural places around the city to natural areas in the rural outskirts, My Tho is a destination worthy of more than just one day trip. The most popular tourist sites are the Vinh Tràng Pagoda, Thói Son Island, Côn Phung, the Mekong River, and the Dong Tam Snake Farm.

Vinh Trang Pagoda

Opulent and extravagant, the white and gold Vinh Tràng Pagoda is one of the Mekong Delta Region’s most famous Buddhist temples. Located near My Tho City on 4.9 acres and home to some of the area’s best fruit trees, the large sets of glass windows let in abundant light. A large Budai statue in the gardens also garners attention as visitors explore the grounds.

• Thoi Son Island

Situated on the Mekong River, Thói Son Island is famous for its beautiful canals, fruit trees, and honeybees. Visitors can book a private boat tour to access the island. On the island, there are a few small restaurants the service guests and there are multiple gardens where visitors can take a walk to enjoy the view. In Thói Son, tourists must try the longan, sapodea, and coconut fruit.

Con Phung Island

Busier than Thói Son, Côn Phung Island is another on the river and is visited by tourists from both My Tho and Bên Tre, especially since both cities offer tours daily. Visitors will have to take a boat to access the island and its gardens. On Côn Phung, the tourist infrastructure has been more developed, so visitors can enjoy the restaurants, gardens, and pagodas.

• Mekong River

The Mekong River is famous in Southern Vietnam and My Tho is an excellent spot where tourists can hop on a boat to explore the water. Used not only as transportation but also for boat tours of the Mekong River, tourists can learn more about the city’s lifestyle and local wildlife. Boats are abundant on the river and tours are offered daily by local guides.

Dong Tam Snake Farm

One of the largest producers of snake venom for local and exported use, Dong Tam Snake Farm has become a popular tourist destination just outside of My Tho. Housing over 50 species of snakes, an on-site museum teaches visitors about venom. One-day tours are offered by local agencies in My Tho and visitors should plan to spend about half the day at the farm.

Most hotels have very affordable rates, so travelers on a budget will have no issue finding a place that suits their needs. On the other hand, there are a few hotels that are more expensive and luxurious for travelers who want to indulge in their vacation.

The Island Lodge – Just outside of My Tho, the Island Lodge is a stunning property that brings luxury to the Mekong River. Dining in My Tho is a thrilling experience due to the plethora of local dishes. From noodle soups to seafood specialties, My Tho has a diverse culinary scene. The best restaurants in My Tho are Chuong Dong Restaurant, Hu Tieu 44, and Hu Tieu Chay Cay Bo De.

Night Market – The Night Market is the place to go if you want to try a little bit of everything. There are multiple stalls and vendors at the Night Market, and each has its own specialty dish. Popular meals include fried fish or hotpots. The Night Market is open daily in My Tho and it has some of the most affordable prices, making it a great place for backpackers to go.

Chuong Dong Restaurant – Featuring mostly seafood dishes and a few western meals, Chuong Dong Restaurant has a delicious array of local dishes including fried fish, spicy sea snails, shrimp cakes, and ginger clams. Located on the riverfront, diners can enjoy the view as they dine. A popular spot among locals, during weekends the restaurant can be quite busy.

Hu Tieu 44 – Serving a meat version of My Tho’s hu tieu noodle soup, the Hu Tieu 44 Restaurant is the place to go if you’re looking for a good meal. The soup is frequently made with seafood, chicken, or pork and fresh herbs with offal are packed on. Meal options include having the ingredients mixed dry or steeped in a delicious broth.

Hu Tieu Chay Cay Bo De – Another restaurant that serves My Tho’s hu tieu vermicelli-noodle soup is Hu Tieu Chay Cay Bo De. Using local produce and a meat-free stock, the soup is a tasty way to refuel after a long journey. Meat is not served at this restaurant, so vegetarian travelers won’t have to worry about any orders getting mixed up.

Special Events

In tune with My Tho’s immense agriculture industry, the biggest city-specific celebration is the 6-day Fruit Festival. During the month of April, My Tho City hosts the festival to honor the local farmers and showcase the year’s crops. Producing 950,000 tons of fruit annually, My Tho City and Tien Giang Province grow more fruit than any other destination in Vietnam.

At the festival, visitors can tour the booths to taste up to 30 varieties of fruit. Seminars are held in addition to the celebrations and tourists may also book tours of the local fruit orchards.

For locals, the most used modes of transportation are bus, boat, and motorbikes . There are many highways and canals throughout the city, so everything is easy to navigate and interconnected. Tourists can also walk around the city or hire a cab. Some hotels also offer shuttle service to their guests, or they can help arrange for other means of transport around the city.

My Tho’s southern location and placement in the Mekong Delta often brings a lot of rain during the wet season . Travelers should avoid visiting during the hot summer months and instead should visit from November to May, which is the dry season . This is the time of year that the heat and humidity are at their lowest and there is also less rain.

However, travelers should keep in mind that My Tho can get very busy during the winter holidays, so booking accommodation early will be necessary.

Acting as a gateway to the Mekong River Delta, My Tho is a dynamic destination where tourists can learn more about life in Southern Vietnam. A popular day-trip destination for HCMC dwellers, travelers should consider spending more time in the city. With so many tourist attractions and activities, it is impossible to see everything in one day.

Plus, with an overnight vacation, tourists will have more time to taste and enjoy the local delicacies in My Tho too.

I've been on a few cycling tours in my time, but Mr Biker Saigon is by far the best. This also included art centre and souvenir shops which, like alot of Vietnam especially the markets there is a lot of pressure to buy something. It was fun I don't remember the guides name but she was kind and knowledgeable. The next day was the highlight of the tour. The Mekong Delta the guide was Vu and she was awesome. Her English was perfect.,her style easy friendly fun with an excellent sense of humour approachable, organised related to everyone in the group even with diversity in cultures. Loved it. Would recommend this tour. Day 3 was CuChi tunnels with Ken, again a well organised, run informative tour, another great day and guide.

My Tho Vietnam has typical weather of the South country with two main seasons: the wet season and the dry season. The wet season lasts from May to November and often causes heavy rainfall with high humidity.

Our tour guide will pick you up at your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City and take you to Mekong Delta, where you can enjoy a full-day activity tour in My Tho and Ben Tre provinces, and experience the immensity of the biggest rice bowl of Vietnam. 

The first sightseeing spots of the Mekong delta day tour are the floating fish farms and markets on the 4 legendary islets of Dragon, Unicorn, Tortoise and Phoenix. A rowboat will wind you down narrow water palm streams before you switch to a bicycle to cycle approximately 7 miles (12 km) through coconut gardens and along village paths to have a deeper view of the beautiful scenes.

We will then move to the local village, where you can experience daily lives of locals, and stop to visit residents’ houses or workshops to learn how they make banana and coconut cakes and taste those local specialties. You can try walking across the famous Monkey Bridge (a slender bamboo bridge used in rural Southern Vietnam to cross rivers and canals) to see locals making rice paper cakes and rice wine.

Lunch will be served with unique Mekong cuisine before coming back to My Tho City and transfering to Ho Chi Minh City.
