Very good stay in Hotel De Paris, we had a Sea View Room and was lucky to have really good weather in October. Very clean, good service. Meals very good Music most evenings. We watched glorious sunrises most mornings. Hotel opposite The Pier so could watch the many visitors coming and going. Parking facility outside front.

I've come away with mixed feelings about this hotel. It is an impressive Victorian building positioned right on the front overlooking the pier. Once inside the lobby is also impressive but the decor is definately stuck in a 70s (and the worst of the 70s at that). The lounge has beautiful views but the wooden armed dark green seats placed around the edge of the room give it a nursing home feel. We travelled in a group of 3 ladies (well females if not quite ladies) in our 40s for a weekend away from kids, other halves and dogs. I shared a twin room, number 36, with one other. We have known each other a very long time and upon entering the room my friend exclaimed "This will be good practice for when we're in a nursing home together". The "home" feel continues to the rooms with their wooden armed chairs and plastic backed matress covers, no attention to detail has been left out although we didn't seem to have any rich tea biscuits for our lovely cup of tea. On the landing was placed a totally naff ercol effect table which my friend insisted was the night nurses station. Added to that the strict Coach company instructions on the notice board and guests playing dominoes in the lobby and you may get the picture. But the view from number 36 was incredible and totally negated all of the above. A huge bay window looked out over the front and pier and the sunrise from our window was spectacular. We even momentarily forgot the prevassive smell of damp that hit us on entering the room. The rest of the hotel seemed immune from this smell, even our 3rd freinds small double with side sea view (number 51) did not smell of damp. But ours did. Strongly. The following morning we discovered one of the causes as a drip of water landed on me when I was standing outside of the bathroom. We investigated further to find drips coming down the door jam very near to the light switch and a drip forming on the ceiling. When we mentioned it to reception we were reassured that it was just someone having a shower above us!!! In fairness they did send someone up to investigate and they said they would report it and get it sorted. I hope they do as they're is an obvious danger, let alone the smell, of water getting into the electrics. The staff were friendly and helpful, although initial contact had been a stressful interaction the receptionist turned out to be OK, we just caught her at a bad time. I did overhear a staff conversation regarding staff shortages and they are obviously doing the best they can. The breakfast catered for gluten free (3rd friend) vegetarian (me) and eat anything (2nd friend) although we were a bit gutted at having to be down to breakfast on a Sunday morning by 9am. The staff were friendly and efficient and the breakfast was as stated on the tin, nothing to rave about but nothing to complain about either. We laughed until we cried and had a good old girly time, there were other "younger" people there too and everyone was chatty and cheerful. Would I go back? Probably, if they promised no damp and we had one of the front sea view rooms. I wouldn't go back if it wasn't for the price (£40 b&b) combined with the view.

just got home in derby after two days and nights at hotel de paris. can only give this hotel a glowing reference, i am coeliac and cannot eat wheat barley or rye its a gluten problem. i told reception on my arrival and throughout my stay the staff new and i never had to repeat myself time and time again . the staff were very very professional and polite cannot find anything wrong with this hotel whatsoever many thanks hotel de paris

Just returned from a 5 day stay, travelled with Alfa coach holidays, we would rate it more than a 2 star Hotel.Had a room on the third floor with sea view overlooking the pier, stunning view worth paying the extra money for this. Room was spacious, spotlessly clean and shower brilliant. Good choice of food, prompt service and it was always hot.Staff were very friendly and helpful, only minus was the floor boards creaking in bedroom but not really a big problem, we would recommend a stay at this hotel

hotel and staff good standard, food was reasonable but not very exciting. hotel was not easy to find and the parking facillities limited. staff mainly east europeans very helpfull and well trained in servicing guests. this hotel is not for young people mainly retired residents with entertainment to suit older residents.

We arrived at our hotel about 17.00 and was greeted by Steve the Hotel manager who took time to tell us a few things about the hotel and the fire procedure, a very friendly guy. We then booked in and went to our room a quite large room very clean with a sea view which looked over the pier , en-suite with a powerfull shower. We had about 1 hour before dinner so we went out of the hotel to look around, the hotel was a old victorian building with plenty of character. We came back in and found the bar, quiet a large room with large windows looking over the bay, friendly staff, prices for bar snacks and drinks about the same as the local pubs. the Hoel De paris has a lift, and two dining rooms which doubles as the ballroom where entertainment was on most evenings with 1/2 hour of bingo. The food was excellent breakfast was great with black pudding but you have to ask for it. and the staff was cheerful and dressed smartly. Dinner was again excellent with plenty choice and tasted great, Its hard to say anything negative about this hotel but I will try .. Some rooms have a few steps to climb, If you want to go down to the pier its down a long slope but worth the effort, where the Theater is well worth going to. Overall we had a fantastic holiday and would reccomend to others and will certainly go back again.

Just returned from a holiday from this hotel,And just had to let people know what a great hotel it is.It is spotlessly clean,Staff are excellent,Rooms Are excellent and very big.Food is of a very high standard and served by very good staff who are very pleasant and helpful. Also we traveled with ALFA Tours. Our Coach driver Dave was Brilliant very knowledgable about the area,And very helpful to everyone,Witty to. All in all we had a very good holiday. Thanks Everyone.

I visited this hotel for lunch last week with a group of WI ladies. The food was appalling. Frozen battered cod. the batter was flat , grey looking and tough. I suspected that it was frozen and the waitress confirmed this. The peas were the worst I have ever tasted. The apple pie tasted like Tesco value. I cetainly would not serve this standard of food at home and certainly do not expect it from a hotel in Cromer. To add insult to injury we could see people outside going by with lovely pieces of golden battered fish and chips. We had a lovely window seat overlooking the pier . There was one person serving and taking money in the bar for a coachload of customers.

we stopped here by chance during a visit to Cromer, and had lunch in their bar area ... we were totally taken aback - the food was excellently priced and the portions very generous and to put the "icing on the cake" the food was really nice too. A lovely victorian hotel we had a bit of a nose around before leaving and really would consider coming here again - may be to stay next time.

FIRST TIME WITH ALPHA HOLIDAYS

Cannot think of anything to change from what you are already doing. My holiday went well (apart from the weather), Nigel, our driver was very kind and considerate to all of his passengers. The changeover at Tamworth, went with military procession, so well organised. I'm looking forward to my next holiday Thank you

Hi Maureen, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review, we look forward to welcoming you back soon!

The room was of a good size

The room was of a good size, shower was hot, the food was fresh and very nice, choice of starter and main excellent. Cleaning staff do a good job 👍. We enjoyed the excursions on offer. Shaun the coach driver was very nice and friendly. The only thing that was an issue, the guest in the room next to us left his TV on loud until the early hours, on two occasions, however after going down stairs the night security returned to the guest room and turned his TV off, the following night same again, then the night porter knocked on his door and told him to turn down his TV. This did not put us off our holiday. The reception staff did all they could to resolve this matter. We look forward to visiting again

Fabulous holiday with Alfa

Had a fabulous holiday with Alfa. From the moment we were picked up we were looked after completely. The hotel (Monarch in Bridlington) was great, spotlessly clean and the staff were so lovely and always smiling. Nothing was too much trouble. Was really impressed with Alfa and will definitely be booking again.

Hi Amy, Thanks for taking the time to leave us such a great 5* review! We are delighted to hear that everything went well and you enjoyed your break.

Really good value for money

Coach and hotel were fine, and value for money. However, as a first time customer I got anxious over the lack of advance information about length of transfer times, the very early putting out of cases for the return journey and any policy about tipping.

Dear Mary, We are so glad to hear you enjoyed your first holiday with us! If you have any queries about our procedures, please do contact us as we want to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a lovely review and we look forward to welcoming you back soon!

A holiday to remember.

From start to finish, everything carried out professionally. Coach very comfortable, driver was good. The hotel at Shanklin was very clean and airy facilities excellent, entertainment was very good.I have utmost respect for all the staff at this hotel, for their hardwork in making our holiday a special one. Would I recommend Alfa travel to friends and family, absolutely.

Hi Alan, Thanks for taking the time to leave us such a great 5* review! We will pass your lovely comments onto the team at the Shanklin and we look forward to welcoming you back soon!

Hotel was excellent

Hotel was excellent The only downer was the arrangements at Bowburn I was taken from Durham to Bowburn and arrived at 8.45. It wasn't until 10.15 the coach left for Criccieth. One and a half hours leaving for the trip at the interchange is not acceptable Coming back there was an even greater delay but I got a lift - someone came and fetched me from Bowburn Otherwise excellent holiday spoilt for me by poor service at the interchange

Hi Brian, We are so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay with us at the George IV in Criccieth and we look forward to welcoming you back soon! We are sorry to hear your experience at the Bowburn interchange was unpleasant, we can assure you that we are working on solutions all the time so that we can make further improvements throughout the year.

Spring holiday at Cromer

The coach driver was very knowledgeable and the hotel very clean , even though our bedroom could benefit from an update. The food was okay but the fish pie had hardly any fish in fact it was mainly mash potatoes!!

Date of experience : 13 April 2024

Hi Pamela, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a great 5* review, we will pass your feedback to the team about the food and hope to welcome you back soon.

Really good value for the money

Really good value for the money. Very friendly and experienced coach drivers who provided invaluable information on the excursions. The hotel rooms although fairly basic were spotlessly clean with a second to none hotel staff who were superb.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

All Good. First time we travelled with Alfa. Though we tried several coach travel before. Everything was perfect, in place, well organised. Though room size was very small for two, hardly you move around but we upgraded it by paying extra. Sadly, no mixer on washbasin, separate tap was bit difficult for use with upgraded version of room.
