CONCERT REVIEW : Paolo Nutini -,Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh 31st August 2023

paolo nutini tour uk 2023

Edinburgh’s Royal Highland Centre has played host to a stellar line up of live performances this last week, rounding off on Thursday with Paisley-born, Paolo Nutini; the sold out show being his only Scottish gig of 2023.

Taking to the stage, Nutini looked relaxed, cool and perfectly at ease in front of a crowd. “Afterneath” kicked things off, the lead track from his latest offering, “Last Night In The Bittersweet”; his first release in 7 years. Nutini’s newer material clearly dominated; something that has been met with mixed reaction since his live return in 2022. “Through The Echoes”, “Lose It”, “Radio”, “Heart Filled Up”, “Scream (Funk My Life Up)”, “Acid Eyes” and “Radio” shaped the set, while fresh takes of earlier material also got an airing. “Let Me Down Easy” reworked now has a slick, funk vibe, “New Shoes” has a edge missing from the radio-friendly, pop smash hit of 2007, while a stripped back “Coming Up Easy” is almost gospel and signature anthem, “Candy” is now folk tainted food for the soul.

Nutini returned from the wilderness last May after a 7 year break with a string of live shows in intimate venues across The UK, including two sold out shows at The Corran Halls in Oban. Absence seems to have made hearts grow wildly fonder of Paolo with his first LP in 7 years hitting Number One, a debut, sold out TRNSMT headline slot and a tour that has stretched across the world, including 5 consecutive sold out shows at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro last December, an impressive first for an artist at the venue.

The break, albeit longer than probably even he intended, has not diminished Nutini as an artist, quite the opposite. Paolo is rejuvenated, focused; he has a passion for performing that is infectious, yet he exudes an air of modesty that assures you he isn’t taking a single second of this for granted.

A nod to fellow “buddy”, Gerry Rafferty came in the form of cover, “Stuck In The Middle With You” before Nutini and his band bowed out with freedom chant, “Iron Sky” and arena friendly anthem, “Shine A Light”.

However, Paolo wasn’t quite finished with Edinburgh; he paid tribute to Sixto Rodriguez, the recently passed singer / songwriter and personal “hero” of his, regaling fans with a story of receiving a DVD of Rodriguez on a train, “… singing one of MY songs … Fucking HELL!” Nutini then joked that he is frequently approached and asked, “Why do you never play that song? So I’m gonna play that song for you now”. And play THAT song, he did. Nutini’s breakout song, “Last Request” got an airing after more than a decade. It was the song everyone was praying for, but no-one dared dream would come.

A triumphant, visibly delighted Nutini bowed out amidst a wave if “I am not worthy” salutes and promises of new music and more gigs for 2024. If Thursday was our last night in the bittersweet, we already can’t wait for the next chapter.

Paolo Nutini next huge act announced for this year’s Eden Sessions

Multi-platinum Scottish sensation Paolo Nutini is the latest act to be announced for the 2024 Eden Sessions, bringing his chart-topping hits to the iconic venue on June 19, 2024. This will be the fourth Eden Sessions performance for the Sunny Side Up singer-songwriter, who has racked up more than 1.5 billion streams and 18 platinum certifications, and counting. The Paisley-born musician, recently named a Modern Scottish Classic at the 2023 Scottish Album of the Year Awards, found fame in 2006 with the release of his first album, These Streets. The record entered the UK album charts at number three and delivered hits such as debut single Last Request and Jenny Don’t Be Hasty, going on to achieve a five-platinum status. His career has seen him headline Glastonbury’s Other Stage, Benicàssim in Spain and, not least, the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony alongside Duran Duran, Snow Patrol and Stereophonics.  Released to universal acclaim, and marking three consecutive UK number-one albums, The Telegraph’s Neil McCormick attributes Paolo with ‘…the most fluid, raw and emotional soul voice Britain has produced since Rod Stewart…’ . Rita Broe, Managing Director of Eden Sessions Ltd, said:

“ We are thrilled to be welcoming Paolo Nutini back to the Eden Sessions. He’s graced some of the biggest stages in the world and if his previous Sessions are anything to go by, it will be a unique and unforgettable show .”

Paulo Nutini is the eighth show to be announced for the 2024 Eden Sessions. Already confirmed acts for next summer’s Sessions are Crowded House (June 12) Fatboy Slim (June 15 – sold out), Suede and Manic Street Preachers (June 29), The National plus This Is The Kit (July 2), Rick Astley plus The Lighting Seeds (July 3), Tom Grennan (July 5) and JLS (July 13). More artists will be announced soon!

Paolo Nutini is an award winning pop rock singer/songwriter born in Paisley, Scotland.

For the past six years, Paolo Nutini has been learning how to speak his own language. After touring 2014’s Caustic Love, his second UK #1 on the bounce and his biggest chart success to date in the US, Paolo found, in the gap between his late 20s and early 30s, that he’d assembled a musical vocabulary that he hadn’t put into proper use in his own work to that point.

Last Night In The Bittersweet is an album of reframed experiences and rewired iconography, where the lurid colours of a neon motel sign or a snatch of dialogue from a movie can mean as much as a heartfelt plea or wrenching goodbye. It combines Can-style motorik rock songs with squalling mini-epics and self-contained, hook-driven cuts best described with heavy labels like Motown or Stiff or Sun.

Witness the Steve Nieve skronk of the organ on Petrified in Love, or the layers and layers of sound that ricochet off Lose It’s propulsive core—driven on by Paolo’s writing utensil of choice, a bass guitar—before it explodes into life with the three minute mark in sight, like Tina Turner taking Jaki Liebezeit’s seamless drumming as an invitation to get all the way out there.

Then there's sequences such as Through The Echoes, perhaps the most straightforwardly beautiful and affecting song in Paolo’s catalogue: there are flecks of Sam Cooke here, but it’s not some sort of calculated grab at the permanence of those sounds. “I love you, like a song,” he sings during Everywhere, and that’s the truth, as plain as he can say it.

Live reviews

Paolo Nutini is indeed a force to be reckoned with lately, with the release of his third studio album 'Caustic Love' debuting at number one in the charts he is one of the hottest artists right now.

It is certainly undeniable that this Scot has managed to fuse together musical genres that others would be wary of attempting. He successfully manages to merge together folk, blues and soul rock; all of which are present in his latest album.

The 27 year-old burst onto the scene back in 2005 with his debut album 'These Streets' which still to this day harbour many of his most well-known tracks. Throughout his career Nutini has never been one to shy away from taking chances which could evidently be seen during his set at V Festival. With crowd favourites such as 'New Shoes' and 'These Streets' not being forgotten it was album tracks such as 'Better Man' which really showcase the talent this man has. However, with such a variation of genres being thrown into the mix it is no doubt that fans would be slightly apprehensive to see how a live show with the musician could possibly play out. But I'm here to throw all your worries away and tell you that Nutini knows exactly how to work a crowd.

He manages to captivate his crowd whole heartedly with only a few words being shared to the crowd between songs, but let me reassure you that for most his smouldering eyes and rocker style is enough to make you fall completely in love with his soulful voice.

After five long years since seeing Paolo Nutini live, our group was beyond excited when we found out he'd be touring the USA. My sister introduced us to his music in 2009, where we saw him live in Vancouver, BC. He was amazing then with his crooner music style. He seemed shy and hardly looked up at the crowd. Fast forward to 2014 at The Troubadour, Los Angeles where we waited with the sold out crowd anticipating his latest music and hoping for some of our old favorites (Candy, New Shoes, Jenny Don't Be Hasty). Paolo didn't disappoint! He's grown as a musician who plays to his audience-his energy was contagious! He took an old favorite and changed it up to be more soulful. He played his new songs and mixed it up with his older favorite hits. We met fans who'd seen him in NY and flew to LA to see this show. Paolo's show at the Troubadour was electrifying-he's always been a great musician but he's kicked it up to another level. His band "The Viper's" were as amazing-his backup singer had the vocals of an angel! I hope when we see him in Oakland, CA this September his show's just as great as last night's was. "Epic" is how a new fan described last night's concert and I absolutely agree. If you get the chance to see this guy in concert run, don't walk and get those tickets as fast as you can!

Paolo Nutini's body and soul on stage. After a few hours of typical Dutch rain, the sun came out again when Paolo Nutini closed a great festival day of "De Wereld Draait Buiten" at Westerpark, Amsterdam. We already had a great time, where especially Michael Kiwanuka's gig was above our (high) expectations!

At 9 pm, you could see all festival people coming from every corner of the festival and gathered at the Park Stage to experience a spectacular ending of the day. Most of us were cold and soaking wet, but from the first sound of Nutini's voice, we were warmed. Nutini played mostly songs of his recent album and a great "medley" of some of his older songs. As we know him, he puts his body and soul in his performance. Some might say he yells a lot, but if you like his music, every scream touches you. Music isn't just fun, it's about sharing your emotions. " I don't love you, I need you " Emotions were all over the place, on stage and in the audience. A great performance of a great man!

Seeing Paolo Nutini live is more of an experience than just attending a concert.

It's a roller coaster of emotions that will have you bouncing out your seat to "Jenny Don't Be Hasty" one minute then reaching for your hanky to wipe away tears the next as Paolo sings you the stories of his personal experiences.

With a voice that belies his youth you will truly be doing your ears and your soul a favour by taking them along for the ride. What this man's lyrics and voice can do in 45 minutes is more than any therapist can do in 15 years.

I have never been disappointed by anything that Paolo & the Vipers have sung. The man and his band are pure musical gold. "These Streets", "Sunny Side Up" or "Caustic Love" – you decide, when you love one you will love them all. It's only a matter of time.

Paolo Nutini was incredible. The support acts were not altogether that brilliant: Grace Jones arrived very late and did not appeal to the younger half of the audience (myself included).

When Paolo arrived onstage I was pleased to see he was not at all worse for wear, as it had been so disappointing when he couldn't remember his own song lyrics at TitP last year. He was on top form all the way through the night, interacting with his native crowd as only a a Scot can.

I was disappointed not to hear 'Growing Up Beside You', but generally the set list was excellent.

Highlights included Iron Sky, with red flares adding to the performance. The fireworks at the end were a beautiful way to end, accompanying last request.

Had an absolute ball last night. Paolo Nutini was outstanding. Waited weeks to see him since I bought the ticket, and he did not disappoint on the day. Can't wait for him to return to Swansea, if he does ( I pray he does). He was incredible from the moment he walked out on stage, to the moment he left the stage. When he jumped in the crowd, I thought I was going to faint haha. I couldn't believe how close to the stage I was (3/4 rows back). Thank You Paolo Nutini for such an incredible day!

I really like Paolo and his music. He is very talented and was very excited to see him. After purchasing two tickets for my girlfriend and I for her birthday we expected a great night. Unfortunately while Paolo performed great on the night the O2 Millennium Dome was such a bad venue for him. 80% of the crowd were seated and those that were standing looked like they had never danced in their lives. This was such a shame. Please don't play in venues like that again Paolo. Ben.

Despite the fact that his support act, Grace Jones, was over 20 minutes late, Paolo materialised on stage just in time. I was only able to stay for about half of the gig because my friend was ill but what I heard of him made me wish I could have seen it all. The passion in his voice when he sings, particularly to his home country, sends shivers up and down my spine. Just when you think you've heard "Better Man", he puts a whole new twist on it. One of my best gigs to date.

Fantastic. A smaller venue is definitely best. He wowed the crowed and gave his best. All for a grest cause we all knew why we there.. he did not keep going on expecting praise for giving his time but paid his due respect for Beverlea abd to her lovley son who he brought on stage at the end his acustic version of last respect was one to remember for ever. Brilliant man and performer. Nit forgetting his band members who also gave it there all.

In December, Nutini will celebrate a successful year with a run of homecoming shows at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow. He has recently been announced as the headline act for Latitude Festival 2023, alongside Pulp and George Ezra.

In a rare recent interview with Rolling Stone UK, Nutini reflected on returning to the stage post-pandemic, “I’ve never stopped writing songs and writing ideas and that’s what gives me my kicks. Even if they sit half-finished for a year, I feel like I’m happy regardless of what I’m doing at the time. But over the past two years, watching how it’s affected everybody, that social shutdown, it made me think that it is a real privilege to go out and communicate with people on such a scale. And to have the outlet of release that performing on a stage can give.”
