The abundant new grass makes the area around Lake Masek and Lake Ndutu the ideal place for the wildebeest to give birth. The herd will stay put for a while in the southeast Ndutu area after the calves are born before heading up north in a clockwise direction.

Calving season means adorable wobbly babies finding their legs – a bonus for predators who do not play nicely. If you want to see a wildebeest just hours old, your best chance is to go out at midday, when they typically give birth, to allow the babies the time to gain strength before nightfall. Gorilla and chimp trekking

This short dry season in Uganda and Rwanda provides excellent opportunities to trek for chimps, gorillas, golden monkeys and other primates - and to search for rare and endemic birds.

Maasai Mara secret season

February means green landscapes with low visitor numbers, making it an excellent time for wildlife viewing. This is the calving season; you will see cheetahs, lions, leopards and hyenas targeting vulnerable young animals. Combine the Maasai Mara with a coastal holiday - for that perfect bush & beach combo.

The paradise islands

The iconic paradise islands of Zanzibar, Mafia, Chumbe, Pemba, Mnemba, Lamu & Quirimbas Archipelago are at their best during January and February. South African combo safari

Cape Town & the Garden Route February brings arguably the best weather in Cape Town and South Africa's Western Cape. The Mother City, nearby Cape Winelands and Garden Route are at their best, and the festive season crowds have left. Greater Kruger The Greater Kruger area offers green landscapes during the summer rains, and the calving season means plenty of predator action. You can combine these two destinations via a 2-hour direct flight from Cape Town.

São Tomé and Príncipe

February brings excellent warm weather in São Tomé and Príncipe with clear skies. The dry, sunny conditions mean excellent hiking opportunities and clear coastal water offers great snorkelling, diving and nesting turtle watching. This is also an excellent time to add endemic lifers to your birding list.

Ethiopia is at its best between October and March. February brings hot and dry weather - a good time to visit Omo Valley, Aksum, Lalibela, and Gondar.

For wildlife and bird watchers, Ethiopia is packed with endemic species. The national parks offer many enticing encounters – from Ethiopian wolf, gelada monkeys and walia ibex to blue-winged goose, golden-backed woodpecker and Abyssinian catbird.

Travel to Chad is best during the dry season months of November to April. Zakouma National Park offers an exceptional wildlife experience, including elephants, buffaloes, big cats and excellent bird-watching, with the floodplains in the eastern half of the park being the most productive.

African Safaris in February – African safaris in dry season – Where to go on safari in Africa?

African safaris in February – Africa in February sees summer in full swing. Rain has settled in across most of the continent, nourishing its vast savannahs and irrigating the tropical coastline through afternoon showers. But it’s not all grey clouds: choose the right destination and you’ll find yourself under Africa’s classic blue skies and gorgeous sunshine.

It’s a great time for both safaris and beach holidays if you know where to go in February, and you’ll be perfectly in time for some of the year’s biggest wildlife experiences. If you’ve ever wanted to snorkel with a 12-meter (40-foot) whale shark or encounter a rare mountain gorilla in its natural habitat, this is the time to do it. It’s time for cool wine cellars on sprawling estates in Cape Town’s magnificent wine lands and palm-thatched  Bandas   on endless tropical beaches.

Want to see blue skies overhead? Book a vacation in Africa in February. It might not be peak season in the most popular places, but it’s the perfect season for a little R&R under the African sun in these destinations:

Gorilla Tracking

You will need to choose between Gorilla tracking in Rwanda or Uganda ; both have the same success rate at finding Gorillas daily (90%) so the decision is largely down to budget and time. Uganda tends to be the more affordable of the two, for example, whereas Rwanda offers a quicker all-round Gorilla experience.

You will need to be prepared for some rain on your Gorilla trek this is not the mid-year dry season but in general, the weather is much better than in the coming few months.

1. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Wildebeest herds cover the Serengeti savannah in February as the dramatic calving season peaks.

WHY GO? The wildebeest calving season is at its peak & there’s great predator interaction – your chance to see the big cats in action. WEATHER? It can be warm: the average maximum is 29°C (84°F) and there is a chance of afternoon rain. You'll have about eight hours of sunshine a day. COMBINATIONS? Easy to combine with next-door Ngorongoro Crater & Tarangire but also Masai Mara. Hop on a flight to Zanzibar for a ‘beach & bush’ combo.

With up to 8000 births a day, the wildebeest calving season in February is at its peak. By the end of it, some half a million baby antelope will have been born and that is irresistible news for Africa’s predators. Hunters and scavengers big and small descend on the southern Serengeti and the result is some of the most primal nature viewing you are likely to see. There’s also plenty of resident wildlife – elephants, giraffe and buffalo – and the landscape is healthy and green – great for photography.

Choose between established lodges in the area and ‘migration camps’ – semi-permanent tented camps that are set up on the migration routes themselves, thus ensuring amazing game viewing even from camp.

2. Gorilla Trekking, Uganda & Rwanda

February offers some of the year’s driest conditions – it makes a gorilla trek so much easier.

WHY GO? February is one of the driest months of the year: enjoy easier trekking, better photographic conditions & better gorilla sightings. WEATHER? The last month before the rains begin. It’s cool at night and daytime temperatures are fairly constant all year round (average maximum is 27°C / 84°F). COMBINATIONS? Enjoy your gorilla trek & then fly to Kenya's Masai Mara or Tanzania for a classic ‘Northern Safari’ which includes the Serengeti.

You’ll need to make a choice between gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda; both have the same success rate at finding gorillas on a daily basis (90%) so the decision is largely down to budget and time. 3. Zanzibar, Tanzania

Settle down onto your beach lounger & watch the Zanzibar landscape pass slowly by.

WHY GO? Its golden beaches basking in summer sunshine, Zanzibar makes a great destination after Tanzania safari whether for a family, couple or group of friends. WEATHER? It’s hot and there is some rain – usually a big afternoon downpour – but the Indian Ocean temperature is 28°C (83°F) and rain is unlikely to spoil the day. COMBINATIONS? Make it easy & stay in Tanzania: good wildlife viewing in the northern safari destinations, especially in the Serengeti with the wildebeest calving season.

Lying off the coast of Tanzania, the island of Zanzibar makes the ideal combination with a safari. It’s a destination that built its reputation as a trading post between civilisations and you’ll see that reflected in the architecture and culture, especially if you wander around the streets of historic Stone Town.

Zanzibar is popular with families – there are child-friendly resorts – as well as with couples and honeymooners, and its accommodation ranges from beach lodges and private villas to boutique hotels and guesthouses with views over Stone Town. And if you are a diver, then February is one of the best months to get underwater, not least because it’s when whale sharks are migrating along the coast.

4. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

February sees fewer other visitors to the crater but the wildlife remains as prolific as ever.

WHY GO? Excellent Big 5 viewing in the crater all year round but February is peak calving season for many of its animals which means plenty of predators in action. WEATHER? Mild nights & warm to hot during the day with occasional rain. Maximum average temperatures hover between 26C° and 29°C (79°F – 84°F). COMBINATIONS? The Serengeti is very accessible from Ngorongoro & is easily combined with Tarangire & Lake Manyara to make the classic ‘Northern Safari Circuit’.

A sunken volcanic crater packed with wildlife, Ngorongoro is a popular destination at most times of the year but February offers an equitable balance between weather and visitor numbers. There may be some rain and cloud but it’s not nearly as busy as later in the year and so now is the time to look for accommodation deals.

You can choose between staying in the area or at lodges set right on the edge of the Ngorongoro crater itself where the views are sensational. Activities are restricted to game drives in the crater but with all the heavyweight wildlife round, you’ll be glad to be inside a vehicle. This is Big 5 country (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard) and the resident wildebeest are in their calving season – it’s all action in the crater.

5. Cape Town & Garden Route, South Africa

Warm sunny weather means it’s a great time to explore the Cape in any way you choose.

WHY GO? Hot, dry & sunny: it’s lovely weather & the best time to be outdoors & enjoying Cape Town & the Winelands as well as magical De Hoop & the Garden Route. WEATHER? It doesn’t get much drier than February in Cape Town. It’s late summer, generally hot and sunny and often windy; the best beach season. COMBINATIONS? Enjoy a Green Season safari: Victoria Falls is in thundering full-flow while Botswana’s Savuti and Central Kalahari destinations are full of summer wildlife.

The holiday crowds have long returned home. All the top destinations – Boulders Beach, Camps Bay, Cape Point, Table Mountain – are a lot easier and more pleasant to visit and the local roads are much quieter too – good news if you are planning a self-drive holiday.

There’s lots to do in and around Cape Town and the nearby Winelands but this is a great time of year to travel along the Garden Route and see for yourself why the region is so popular. Make sure you stop in at De Hoop for a couple of nights: the Cape’s best-kept secret is about to get out of the bag – see it before it does.

6. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe & Zambia

The Zambezi River is almost in full flow: Victoria Falls is thundering & is best seen from the air!

WHY GO? Victoria Falls is approaching full flow & its thunder can be heard from a mile away – it’s one of Africa’s highlights & combines easily with a safari. WEATHER? Victoria Falls is at its fullest & most impressive. But note that this is the late rainy season, when the malaria risk is highest and rain the heaviest. COMBINATIONS? Add on a safari to next-door Botswana & take advantage of Green Season prices: Chobe’s Savuti region & the Kalahari are especially good in February.

Prepare to get wet. Not so much from rain – although there is a bit around – but Victoria Falls is almost in full flow and the result is a billowing cloud of mist and spray that soaks all onlookers. Victoria Falls in February gives you the chance to experience the sounds and sights that a mile of water makes as it thunders into a deep abyss – perhaps best appreciated from the air on a helicopter or fixed-wing scenic flight.

After you’ve had your fill of the waterfall, you can then look forward to a range of other activities in the area ranging from rhino tracking and elephant-back safaris to canoe trips and game drives. You’ll need to choose between staying in Zimbabwe or Zambia but both sides of the river have a wide range of accommodation and it’s easy to cross the border if you need to.

7. Masai Mara, Kenya

Deep into the birthing season, February is a great month for young animals in the Masai Mara.

WHY GO? It’s a drier window at a rainy time of year: there’s no wildebeest migration yet but there is plenty of resident wildlife including all the big predators. WEATHER? The Masai Mara is lush and green and the resident wildlife is abundant, gathering at water and making for great sightings and easy photography. COMBINATIONS? Stay local with a safari to Amboseli for big game & views of Mount Kilimanjaro before hopping over to the Kenyan coast for an Indian Ocean holiday.

Land of the famous red-robed Maasai people, the Masai Mara Reserve is most famous for the wildebeest migration but with the herds currently in Tanzania’s southern Serengeti, you may be wondering why February is a good time to come here. The answer will be apparent once you are there: many antelope are giving birth while the big animals – elephant, buffalo, giraffe and zebra – are concentrating on fresh grazing – all of which is good news for the Masai Mara’s predators – lion, spotted hyena, cheetah and leopard.

Choose your accommodation from lodges in the reserve itself and smaller camps set in private concessions where you’ll also have the chance to go on guided walks and night drives too.

South Africa

February is an ideal month to visit Tanzania’s national parks, with hot, dry weather, between the end of the short rains (November) and the beginning of the long rains ( March). In some places the rains may arrive early, in February, bringing relief from the heat and bringing green landscapes, flowers and birds, also encouraged by the earlier short rains. This time of year is known as the green or shoulder season. It’s quieter than peak season and prices are often good. In southern Serengeti Plains and Ndutu region, the calving season for the wildebeest and zebras is in full swing making the most of the lush vegetation. With a few exceptions, most of sub-Sahara Africa is in its heavy rain season – Kenya and Tanzania are two of these exceptions.

This is a very exciting and emotive season during the Wildebeest Migration in the southern Serengeti . It’s the height of the calving season with over 500,000 wildebeest born during this month, along with the tens of thousands of zebra foals and antelope being born which means predator activity is at a premium, attracting cheetah, lion, leopard and hyena. February in Tanzania is a opportunity time to maximise your chances of seeing predators hunting.

February is a great time to visit Kenya with the Masai Mara and Amboseli being particularly excellent. Amboseli will be carpeted in green grasses with Mount Kilimanjaro as a dominating backdrop, perfect for searching for the famously large herds of elephants in the region.

The Masai Mara is also particularly productive at this time of year. The grasses of the Mara will be shorter, making wildlife spotting easier. Young will also be being born making daytime predator activity easier to see. In fact, most of Kenya is excellent for a safari experience at this time of year.

Nxai Pan and the Makgadigadi are the places to be in Botswana during February, as the rains will have transformed the fossil and salt pans. Wildlife flourishes with freshly filled waterholes and carpets of green grasses, which in turn draw huge herds of migrating zebra, wildebeest, as well as elephants and buffalo. This is also the time of year to see huge migratory flocks of flamingos in the region with water sources being covered in a carpet of pink.

In the Central Kalahari masses of springbok are attracted to the water sources, making a feast for the black-maned lions and cheetah in the region.

Although many camps across the country close during Zambia's rainy "Emerald Seasons" a handful of those in the South Luangwa remain open and offer an amazing experience for seasoned safari-goers looking to get a different perspective on the park. The focus at this time is on game drives, as well as boat trips on the swollen Luangwa River. There are plenty of dramatic sightings to be enjoyed as the wildlife battles with the elements and the park turns lush and green with seemingly endless standing water - a stark contrast to the dry, dusty valley it becomes in the dry season.

South Africa

This is a fantastic time to visit Cape Town and the surrounding winelands . The daytime temperatures are lovely and warm making way for lots of alfresco dining. You have also missed the Christmas crowds which can make Cape Town feel rather busy. There are a number of wine festivals in and around Stellenbosh and Franschhoek at this time.

• Predatory encounters:  As lions and leopards move into the area to hunt on young and vulnerable calves, predatory confrontations are quite frequent.
• Accomodation options:  For a migration safari to the Serengeti in February, you may reserve your Ndutu accommodation well in advance and have peace of mind.

When is the best month to view the Great Migration?

• Weather:  A hot and humid summer month with average temperatures ranging from 15°C (59°F) to 28°C (82.4°F).
• Wildebeest Migration Movement:  Between Lobo and Naabi Hill, wildebeest herds converge on the Serengeti’s eastern edge in January. The herds are on the move in search of good grasses for their young.
• Predatory encounters:  Because it is calving season, big cats visit in January.
• Accommodation options:  Depending on the conditions, it is recommended that you stay in the city centre and only travel north or south from there.

Migration in February

• Great Migration Movement:  For the past ten to twelve years, wildebeest herds have been settling in and around Lakes Ndutu and Masek. This meadow is lush in February, making it an ideal location for wildebeests to give birth to their young.

Migration in March

• Weather:  In Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, the first month of fall, March, remains warm, with average temperatures ranging from 28°C (82.4°F) to 15°C (59°F). March has a reputation for being a rainy month. The meadows are lush and fruitful, providing vital nourishment for the large herds of wildebeest.
• Wildebeest Migration:  The Serengeti’s Ndutu and Kusini Maswa districts are home to the Serengeti’s wildebeest herds. They move slowly, while numerous newborn calves are fed.
• Predatory encounters:  Predators see calves as easy prey since there are so many of them. There will be a lot of lions and leopards to see.
• Accommodation options:  We recommend spending March in the Ndutu area. Mobile camps in Kusini and Maswa operate during the month of March, providing wonderful possibilities to be close to the herd during your Serengeti migration safari.

Migration in April

• Weather: The Serengeti is damp in April, but you’ll adore it. Bring a raincoat and your sense of humour. April showers are nothing to be concerned about. The rain falls mainly in the evenings, and the days are mostly sunny.
• Wildebeest Migration: Because it is the most consistent, April is one of the finest months to watch the herds. When newborn calves and foals reach the age of mobility, they begin to move.
• Predatory encounters: The populations of lions and big cats in these areas are thought to be steady. Expect a lot of physical interaction between the hunter and the prey.
• Accommodation options: The migration is best seen in April in the Simba kopjes districts of Moru and Kusini.

Migration in May

• Weather: In Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, April is a moderate fall month, with typical highs of 26°C (78.8°F) and lows of 16°C (60.8°F). May is the wettest month in the Serengeti. Roads can be dangerous and challenging to manoeuvre.
• Migratory Movements:  As the calves’ legs become fully functioning in May, the herds take up the pace.
• Encounters with predators: Crocodiles of the Grumeti genus.
• Accommodation options: Staying in the Moru region is recommended, however, Serengeti migration safari arrangements should be arranged as soon as feasible.

Migration in June

• Weather:  Temperatures at Serengeti National Park range from 13°C (55.4°F) to 25°C (77°F) in June, the first month of the winter. In June, the rainy season comes to an end. The fields are lushly green and densely forested.
• Wildebeest Migration:  Wildebeest populations travel over great distances. It could take up to three hours to cover the distance between the leading and trailing herds.
• Predatory interactions:  Each migrating animal must first navigate a crocodile-infested river, the first of many dangerous river encounters.
• River crossings:  The Grumeti River crossing season runs from June to August, depending on the river’s water level. The river is rarely full enough to make dramatic crossings like those seen on the Mara River in July and August.

Migration in July

• Weather : July is another nice winter month in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, with average temperatures ranging from 13°C (55.4°F) to 25°C (77°F).
• Wildebeest Migration : In pursuit of water and greener grass, herds of wildebeests began to migrate quicker.
• Predatory Encounters : Expect predatory encounters, such as with crocodiles.
• River crossings : The Grumeti and Mara Rivers are both crossed.
• Accommodation options : If you want to see early river crossings, the Grumeti River is a fantastic site to come to in July. However, due to the limited number of rooms available, we strongly recommend that you book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Migration in August

• Weather : August is the hottest month of the year in Serengeti National Park, with average temperatures ranging from 14°C (57.2°F) to 26°C (78.8°F). August is a hot and humid month when the dry season comes into high gear.
• Migratory Movements : Wildebeest herds will continue their search for lusher, greener vegetation, attempting to cross the Mara River’s treacherous, crocodile-infested waters.
• Predator encounters : Crocodiles are among the predators encountered.
• River crossings : If you want to see river crossings, August is the best month to go. The animals will cross a foreign border between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara.
• Accommodation options : Book early on both sides of the Mara River. The Olakira Camp, Sayari Mara, and Mara River mobile camps offer a once-in-a-lifetime migratory safari.

Migration in September

• Weather and wildlife: September offers more hot and dry weather, as the dry season continues in the Serengeti and Masai Mara.Most of the wildebeest have crossed the Mara River, and the majority of the herds will be in the Greater Masai Mara area, eating the lush green grass resources before venturing north towards the private conservancies (Mara North, Olare Orok).
• Where to stay in September: Similar to August, September is an easy month to predict where the herds will be. You can still stay in the Serengeti early in the month, but its safer to stay on the Masai Mara side to view the last of the Mara River crossings. The Olakira Camp or the Mara River mobile camps are unrivalled migration safari options.

Migration in October

• Weather and wildlife: October will be milder, as the dry season approaches its climax. You might even experience early rain in the Masai Mara and the Serengeti.The wildebeest herds are in the Masai Mara, but will start to slowly move back into the Serengeti moving through Loliondo in the east.
• Where to stay in October: Its best to stay in the Masai Mara to have the best opportunity to see the wildebeest herds. Nomad’s Lamai and Lemala’s Kuria Hills are good migration safari destinations.

Migration in November

#1 Botswana

Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 mammal species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Even though the country is still underdeveloped and most of the population live in rural households, its national parks, and sight-seeing destinations are on the top 10 of our lists.

Even though many would face some difficulties in locating Malawi on a map, given how tiny it is, the country is home to the world-renowned Lake Malawi National Park. This is practically one-third of the country and is the most biodiverse lake in the world.

Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience. 

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. It's a safe place where visitors can see 400 different avian species.
