Acer Aspire One 11.6″ Announced

Acer introduced a new Aspire One today that features an 11.6″ display. It comes with a 160GB hard drive, Intel Atom processor and a six-cell battery that’s good for up to eight hours. The Acer Aspire One 11.6″ supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connections to keep you connected on the go.

An 11.6″ screen makes this Aspire One more appealing for users who need a netbook they can use for hours on end without straining their eyes. Of course, the larger screen means its not as portable as 9″ and 10″ netbooks.

The Aspire One 11.6″ will be available in red, black, blue and white.

A New Way to Say Netbook Acer to announce the new Aspire One 11,6” Born as a niche phenomenon, the netbook has been dispersed throughout the world, and with Gartner reviews estimating an increase in sales for 2009 that will mean 21 million units distributed sold at a global level (with a more cautious prediction 8 millions made 6 months ago). Netbooks represent a fully strategic category of products that complete Acer’s mobility products, which have always been the core of the business. Acer has taken care of every detail, from winning design to personalized interface and diversification of connection options. All these combined elements have allowed the Aspire One to be the most sold netbook on the market. Being always-connected anywhere represents a diffused trend in the habits of the end-user. Younger generations seek a tool that allows them to communicate with instant messaging or to always be connected to their social networks. Professionals want a device that unites connectivity with mobility, a second or third computer to always carry with them be able to enjoy multimedia contents, internet or e-mail in every instant. The 11.6” Aspire One is equipped with an Intel® Atomâ„¢ processor and Mobile Intel® US15W Express Chipset. Notwithstanding the small size, the 11.6” Aspire One features a large 160 GB internal hard drive and a multi-in-one card reader. Thickness reduced to one inch (only 2.5 cm), it’s made for portability. The integration of WiFi 802.11b/g and Acer Signal Up technology allows easy access to available wireless networks, while Bluetooth connectivity and 3G guarantees even greater freedom: connection at 360 degrees, full control of the online experience, without limits on time and space. This way, there are no limits to social interaction online, if not for those of the imagination. Acer developed the Aspire One 11,6 inch following a very clear point: by observing the daily life and the formal procedures of end users, and to combine them into special experience. Elegant details, like the hinges of the screen and the aerodynamic metal shape with a drop of color inside or the activation switch on immersed in color that contrast with the surface texture, capture attention. In the 11.6 inch versions, the attention to detail is extreme: the keyboard is ‘soft-touch’, to increase typing conform and give a pleasant feeling while chatting on-line with the friends. Dolby Pro Logic® sound and high-definition WXGA screen WXGA back-lit LED screen simulate the most advanced multimedia entertainment station; the extreme slimness, reduced to 2.5 cm of thickness, weighing just a little more than one kilo and with an 8 hours based on 6 cell 5200 mAh battery make the Aspire One easy to take with you, always. Furthermore, there is a digital microphone and Acer Crystal Eye a webcam built into the frame: a small window to the world, to maintain the contacts by means of real-time video streaming, video chat and conference calling. To make these netbooks thinner and to improve portability, the VGA and LAN doors were placed in the back angles of casing for comfortable access to cable management. Portal icons were printed on the borders to identify them more easily and to make them visible even when the cover is closed. One last practical detail: the touchpad is ‘multi-gesture’, allowing you to leaf through pages in the same manner as of a newspaper and allowing you to zoom with just a touch.

The transition from a 16:10 to 16:9 aspect ratio in widescreen notebook displays is well under way, in part because these panels are becoming cheaper to make and their aspect ratio is more consistent with that of consumer HDTVs. When LCD manufacturers proposed this new screen format to laptop makers, Acer quickly jumped at the opportunity. It launched the Acer Aspire 6920G-6071 , a 16-inch media center laptop that instantly won our Editors' Choice award and then was stripped of it because the model ran out of stock as soon as hit the Web. The next iteration, the Aspire 6930G-6723, is out to make amends to those who couldn't get their hands on the last one. Like the previous version, the 6930G brings with it a Blu-ray reader at an unprecedented price and improved 3D game play with an updated Nvidia graphics card. A rich feature set makes it suitable for home theater enthusiasts. Because of these features—and the fact that you can actually buy one today (at TigerDirect.com, for $1,020), the 6930G receives the Editor's Choice for value notebooks.

The 6930G uses the existing Acer chassis, so it looks exactly like the 6920G-6071. Its polished blue exterior (the brand series is dubbed "Gemstone Blue") is attractive and complements the barrel hinge, but doesn't hide its bulk. Its 7.2-pound frame isn't the heaviest in the 16-inch space (the Gateway MC7803u, at 7.7 pounds, earns that distinction), but it could use a slimming lesson from the 6.8-pound HP HDX16t . The solid blue color can use some enhancements, like patterns on the HDX16t or an automotive-inspired design like the MC7803u . But it's easy to forgive the bulk once you add up all the features that Acer packs into the 6930G's chassis.

The 16-inch widescreen is nothing new in the laptop industry. We can expect a huge influx of laptops with a 16:9 aspect ratio by 2009. You're not exactly getting more screen real estate—just a wider screen to mimic the ones founds in consumer HDTVs. Already, you can find the new 16:9 widescreen laptops at prices lower than those of 16:10 widescreens. The 6930G's 1,366-by-768 resolution is considered WXGA, the minimum resolution on this size of screen, and it doesn't showcase a full 1080p HD experience, as the 6930G's bigger sibling, the Aspire 8920G, does. Still, the 720p-resolution screen is perfectly fine for high-definition movies, photos, and any other multimedia task you can toss at it. The keyboard is an absolute pleasure to type on, and it's as comfortable as that of the HDX16t. The 6930G's has slightly the upper hand, though, with its bigger numeric keypad.

The 6930G's feature set shines brighter than its competitors, especially when you consider the system's price. Like the previous version, this configuration has the potential to bring Blu-ray into the mainstream. In addition to playing movies, the integrated Blu-ray drive can burn CDs and DVDs as well. If the laptop's 16-inch screen is too small for you, you can take the movie experience to a larger display via the included HDMI port. There are four USB ports, one of which doubles as an eSATA port, for storage expansion. Though the unit doesn't have a FireWire port, an ExpressCard 34 slot lets you add a FireWire expansion card (or WWAN, extra USB ports, a TV tuner, and the like). The 320GB hard drive is larger (and actually cheaper) than the 250GB one found in the more-expensive HDX16t, and the same capacity as those in the Sony VAIO VGN-FW198UH and the Gateway MC7803u. A good sound system—two speakers and a subwoofer (in base)—is icing on the cake.

You're not going to get a top-tier processor at this price, but the 2.0-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 does the job for many tasks, including video and photo editing, ripping MP3s, and watching HD movies. It helps to have 4GB of memory, which goes well with a 64-bit operating system like Windows Vista Home Premium. For casual gaming, it even comes with an Nvidia GeForce 9600M GS graphics card, which is a smidge faster than the one in the previous version. Its SYSmark 2007 Preview Overall score looked deficient against those of the HDX16t and the Sony FW198U, as it was outscored by a margin of 43 percent and 39 percent, respectively. On video encoding and CineBench R10 tests, it didn't fare much better, trailing both the HP and the Sony by a considerable amount. But the T5800 is a budget processor, so this was expected.

Overall performance testing, though, did show a significant improvement over the 6920G-6071, with battery life the only exception. The performance boost (with its corresponding energy drain), lowered the new model's score to 3 hours 20 minutes, according to MobileMark 2007 tests. The 6920G achieved 3 hours 42 minutes on the battery test.

The only thing that can keep the Acer Aspire 6930G-6723 from outselling its competitors is availability, as it is sold through online stores only. For now, this particular configuration is in stock at TigerDirect.com. Availability is one of the reasons why this media center regained the Editors' Choice in the value category that its predecessor had lost. Because the HDX16t is a far more expensive system and holds the Editors' Choice in the media category, the 6930G doesn't trump it. It's a great deal for anyone who is looking for a multipurpose, Blu-ray–equipped media center.

Tonight, at Acer's New York press event , we got some brief hands-on time with the new, 11.6-inch Aspire One.We still have no pricing or specs, but check out our video and gallery for a walk-through of the updated design. At less than an inch thick, it's significantly thinner than the current 10-inch Aspire One , which is 1.3 inches thick. Even with what appears to be a six-cell battery, it's super thin. Editor-inChief Mark Spoonauer says it's the "sleekest he's ever seen." To boot, the glossy black stylings give it a classy, understated look. In addition to the slimness, the thing that struck us most was the 11.6-inch display, a screen size we're not used to seeing. Aside from being bright, we were impressed with the LCD panel's 1366 x 768 resolution, the first time we've seen that resolution on a netbook. In addition to the display, we took to the keyboard, which felt roomier than the current generation's (a larger footprint, of course, seems commensurate with a slightly larger display). Acer gets bonus points for remembering the details, like putting the right shift key in the correct place. We found the touchpad small, though, and were disappointed that it still has a single, narrow touch button.

Again, pricing and specs will follow soon, as will our full review (the unit we saw had a 1.6-GHz Atom Z530 CPu, 1GB RAM, and a 160GB hard drive, although we don't know yet if these are final specs). In the meantime, enjoy the video and the gallery.

What do I need to bring to get into the event?

Please bring a Photo ID and your ticket to gain access to the event.

Can I bring a guest with me?

Of course, but they will need their own ticket as well. Only valid ticket holders will have access to the Aspire Events.

Is there accessible seating?

We strive to make it as easy as possible for all people to enjoy an Aspire event. Most venues offer accessible seating areas to accommodate their guests. Availability and type of accessible seating will vary based on each venue’s policies and capacity. To purchase accessible tickets or get information about venue accommodations, please contact us at [email protected] . Accessible seating is subject to availability and reserved solely for those with disabilities and their companions.

Will I be allowed to record the event?

Most venues don’t allow camera or recording devices inside, and recording or live streaming of the event is strictly prohibited.

Can I upgrade my tickets?

Yes! If you would like to upgrade your ticket(s), please email us at  [email protected]  and one of our customer service representatives will assist you.

Note:  If you want to upgrade your ticket at the event please speak to one of the Aspire Event Staff and they will help you with your request! We are all part of the sales team!

What is the ticket refund policy?

All sales are final and refunds are only allowed in limited circumstances, such as canceled, postponed, rescheduled, or moved events. If for any reason you’re unable to attend, you can opt to receive a credit to a future event or gift your tickets to family, friends, or colleagues. To receive a credit or gift your tickets, notify us at least 15 days prior to the event by writing to [email protected] . If the event is canceled, postponed, rescheduled, or moved, you’ll receive a notification outlining your options; refunds are determined on an event-by-event basis.

Is there a hotel room block?

At this time, there is not but, there are several options close by if you are traveling to this event.

What is the dress code for the event?

We suggest business casual for the event. Our event space may be on the cool side, so plan accordingly and bring an additional sweater or jacket if you think you may need it.

Will we be able to meet the speakers?

Depending on your experience level, there will be options for a lunch with our speaker(s) and/or a photo opp.
