Lion Brand Blogger Trip To New York City
Today I wanted to share a bit with you about my trip last week to New York City thanks to Lion Brand! It was a special time filled with yarn, blogging friends and more yarn. Yep, pretty awesome. Nearly three years ago I decided to keep track of my knit and crochet designs on a blog and make them available for others that might want to make something similar. It was a true hobby blog where I could have a creative outlet while staying home with my baby girl. Had someone told me I’d be heading to New York three years later for a Blogger Bash, I would have never believed them! This blog has become what it is today thanks to YOU, luck, hard work and also the fact that Lion Brand shared one of the first knitting patterns I ever put on my blog. When I posted that Fingerless Mitt pattern , the idea that more than a few people from Ravelry might see it was not even a thought in my mind. However, when Lion Brand shared that pattern, I realized that I’d better take this a little more seriously if so many folks were potentially going to see my photos and patterns. I’m forever grateful that they shared it as that drove me to improve the blogging experience for you and for myself. Lion Brand has become a great support over the years. So to get to go to New York and meet the Lion Brand team in person as well as the other bloggers and see their facilities?! Yeah, a total dream!
Above: Here we are at Lion Brand Studios in Manhattan! Seriously, these are some of the most intelligent, crafty ladies that I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting! It was so cool to be together and connect in person (we really have a lot in common including our love for yarn of course) From left to right – Tamara from Moogly , Alexandra from Two of Wands , Jess Make & Do Crew , Ashleigh Sewrella , Stephanie All About Ami, ChiWei One Dog Woof and Me!
Above: The ever changing window display at Lion Brand Yarn Studio in Manhattan.
These photos won’t all be “blog worthy” as I was snapping them with my phone. 😉
Above: The Lion Brand Outlet in New Jersey. This place is full of yarn deals! We also got to learn a bit about some new yarns coming out soon and I can NOT wait to get my hands on them and share them with you too. I was also so impressed with how much Lion Brand gives back to the community! They have donated millions of dollars to St. Judes Childrens Hospital and continue to provide yarn to charitable causes.
Above: So much knit and crochet. That giraffe!
Above: My first experience eating real Ramen with Stephanie, Ryan (thank you Ryan for taking the photo!), ChiWei and Tamara. We don’t have any restaurants like this where I live. And on a side note, I attempted a pattern from Stephanie’s blog All About Ami before I even knew what a blog was. Amazing to meet her in person and we really connected as we both stay home with our little girls! It was incredible to get to chat personal life AND yarn with these ladies.
Above: We even got to hit Knit Night at Club Cumming. This was my first experience knitting with a whole group of people at a bar and I want more. Hehe! This is myself and my brother who lives in Manhattan and he recently started knitting. It was a huge bonus to get to hang out with him and my brother in law too!
Above: Chocolate covered oreos from Lion Brand – yum. I almost didn’t want to eat them because they were so pretty, but ultimately I couldn’t resist.
Above: New York Pizza anyone?
Above: It’s hard to pack when you’re a yarn addict. I’ve never had so much in one suitcase as I couldn’t decide what yarns to leave and what to bring along. Lol.
Below: I just love this timeline showing the history of Lion Brand over the years and how things have changed as they celebrate their 140th Anniversary!
My time in New York with my fellow bloggers and the Lion Brand Team was a treasure. While I am home and thrilled to be back with my girl and hubby, the New York trip reminds me of the community we have as knitters and crocheters and the connections that we share. It’s special and I’m blessed to be able to blog about it with you.

Jes: Just wanted to thank you for sharing your New York trip. I noticed that the team at Lion Brand is young and that is great. My generation of baby boomers is still keeping the knitting/crocheting hobby alive and was wondering why Lion Brand does not have that older influence depicted but am sure there are many ladies in their 60’s that share their ideas and projects. God Bless you and keep up the good work my friend. Yes our hobby is very creative and it is wonderful that you take the time out of your busy life to assist when you can. Deb in Ontario, Canada
Hi Deb in Ontario! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and for reading my blog post. No doubt the baby boomers have kept the knitting and crochet community alive! I think that the photo that you’re referring to is of the bloggers that they brought to New York and not the actual Lion Brand team. I saw folks of all ages working at Lion Brand so they definitely have you in mind! In fact, it’s one reason that I’ve enjoyed working with them as I believe they are very inclusive to all people, ages and backgrounds. When I made the Topper for their Fall Winter collection, I was thrilled to see older women modeling my piece as well as a pregnant woman. Thanks so much for keeping this hobby alive for all of us Deb as your generation has certainly taught my generation! And you’re welcome of course for the patterns and posts – it’s great fun for me. Thank YOU for your support friend!
I’m so envious of your visit to Club Cumming on Stitch ‘n Bitch night! When it first opened and I saw that they were going to be having those, a few of my friends and I vowed to go right away but alas, the holiday season took on a life of its own. I am so happy you had the chance to visit the Studio Store in the city. I love that place and was in just before Christmas. I wanted to see some of the super bulky yarns I’ve been curious about up close, and also get a feel for a few others yarns before committing to a project. I had told myself I wasn’t going to buy anything *cough* but ended up leaving with a new set of size 100 circular needles. Thank you for covering the trip, it was great to read! I’m looking forward to then next post.
Welcome home Jessica! I loved this blog, so well written and the pictures, wow, loved them all. So excited about the new yarns! Glad you had fun.
Thanks so much Pam! It was a great time and thanks for taking the time to read this!
Thank you so much for your great description of your trip to NYC and all the information you shared about Lion Brand. You made me feel excited, and I wasn’t even there! I am very glad you shared about Lion Brand’s generosity to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. I have enjoyed using their yarn for years and am happy to learn their hearts are as great as their yarn.
Hi Carolyn! Thanks so much for reading and following along! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the post and even got excited about it. Haha! It was certainly a fun time! And yes, I too was thrilled to learn more about their charitable giving.
Jessica!!! Ryan and I couldn’t stop gushing about how kind and lovely you are! We are so thankful we had the opportunity to meet you in person, go for ramen, and bond over our love of our girls and blogging! Hope to see you in Alberta sometime in the future 😉
My brother and I feel the same way about you two Stephanie! I really hope to see you in Alberta sometime – that would be so amazing!! So happy to have the connection that we share.
Thank you so much. Ever since I taught myself to crochet about 3 years ago, visiting the Lion Brand Yarn Studio has been on my bucket list. One of these days! I cant wait to see all the lovely LB wool as none of the LB wool is available here in Cape Town or even in South Africa. This means I will be travelling to NYC with empty suitcase just so that there is enough space for lots and lots of wool.
Love the time line thank you for sharing…love your blog…Linda Cambridge Ontario.
Thanks so much Linda!
Greetings Jessica, I so enjoyed reading about your trip to Lion Brand, I wasn’t aware that lion brand even has a store in NYC, and I’m in Syracuse NY, so I’m making a special trip to the city, just so I can go and shop there store. I just want to also say thank you for your wonderful blog, you share so many great patterns that its difficult to decided what project to do at times, I finished the ruffle scarf, and the crochet blanket sweater, and right now I’m working on topcho, so as you can see I’m a fan, totally Hooked! Thank You for your great Blog, keep posting!
Hi Marcia! My dad has some family history in Syracuse so it’s fun to hear from you. I’m so pleased that you’ve enjoyed my patterns and so honored as well that you’ve made some many of them! Thanks for your support and encouragement. How fun that you will make a trip to NYC! It was so fun to visit the yarn studio there in the city. They even carry a lot of the luxury yarns that you can only find online so that’s cool too. Have a great weekend and thanks so much for your encouragement here on the blog. 🙂

How to Spend a Perfect Weekend in New York City
The Big Apple is the ultimate destination for design lovers.
The legendary lyrics behind the classic cult song, New York, New York, forever cemented The Big Apple as the city that doesn’t sleep. Now, over forty years after the song was recorded, and following a grueling global pandemic, the city feels alive as ever. On a recent trip, we found scores of newly opened businesses across town, from hotels and restaurants to boutiques and galleries. Read along to discover a few of these places along with a handful of old favorites that deserve a spot on your next New York getaway.
Friday Afternoon
On arrival, drop your bags at The Fifth Avenue Hotel, a new, 153-key maximalist jewel box located on the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and 28 th Street, in the heart of the city’s NoMad neighborhood. The property—known as “The Fifth”—is composed of a historic landmark called The Mansion, designed by McKim, Mead & White, and a modern 24-story glass addition called The Tower, overseen by Perkins Eastman and PBDW Architects.
After settling in, walk fifteen minutes south to Union Square and marvel the farmers and purveyors at the city’s renowned Greenmarket . Lunch at Union Square Café is always a classic choice, or venture back to the Flatiron district for shopping at ABC Carpet & Home . This iconic shop is a mecca for home design enthusiasts and filled with one-of-a-kind pieces from across the globe. The compound also has three popular restaurants, including abcV—a favorite of interior designer, Cece Barfield Thompson—and abc Cocina, which is beloved by local artists such as Allison Janae Hamilton.
Friday Evening
Back at the hotel, freshen up before grabbing drinks at The Portrait Bar. The hotel’s wood-paneled watering hole serves inventive craft cocktails named after destinations such as Marrakech, Oaxaca, and Cebu Island in the Philippines. Stay for dinner at the in-house restaurant, Café Carmellini—guided by James Beard Award-winning Chef Andrew Carmellini—or choose from the number of notable restaurants surrounding the hotel, like The Flatiron Room NoMad , or Koloman , which opened in 2022.
The latter venue is a collaboration between EHV International and chef-partner Markus Glocker and makes elegant French food with a Viennese twist in a setting designed by Russell Sage Studio . Meanwhile, for the past ten years, the celebrity chef Enrique Olvera (of Mexico City’s Pujol acclaim) has continued to dish out some of New York’s best Mexican food at Cosme . Here, you can feast on uni tostadas, homemade mole, and duck carnitas washed down with beautifully prepared mezcal and tequila cocktails.
Saturday Morning
The next morning, head Uptown for breakfast at Cafe Sabarsky in the Neue Galerie and enjoy the selection of Viennese pastries and savory dishes before a morning of gallery hopping. The renowned contemporary art gallery, White Cube , celebrated its 30 th anniversary in 2023 and recently opened its first American location next to The Mark Hotel.
The 1930s building is home to public gallery spaces and private viewing rooms that stretch across three floors. The Frick’s historic Fifth Avenue mansion and library is currently under renovations, though its collection is temporarily on view in the former Met Breuer on Madison, giving visitors a unique opportunity to see the old masters’ works in a contemporary setting. Between stops, weave in some shopping.
At Fivestory , apparel, accessories, and décor from both emerging and established designers are displayed in a luxurious townhouse. KRB , located nearby, is a much-loved institution offering a curated selection of antiques, exclusive home accessories, and vintage furniture. The brand, which was founded by Kate Rheinstein Brodsky, celebrates its 10 th anniversary in 2024. Three blocks from KRB sits Creel and Gow . The shop is a veritable cabinet of curiosities, selling a collection of rare minerals, silver shells, coral, and decorative objects you won’t find anywhere else.
Saturday Afternoon
After a full morning, enjoy an elegant lunch at Majorelle in The Lowell. The restaurant serves sophisticated French fare with a Moroccan twist in a sunny skylit garden. Not far from here, the esteemed British-born tailor, Leonard Logsdail , cuts smart suits for Hollywood’s elite. Schedule a visit to his atelier on E. 53 rd Street and join the roster of notable names—such as Denzel Washington, Michael Douglas, and Daniel Craig—who’ve worn Logsdail’s bespoke creations.
Later, venture down to Chelsea and immerse yourself in the city’s historic arts district. Galleries such as Lehmann Maupin , DIA Chelsea , Lisson , David Zwirner , and Yossi Milo are all standouts, as is Hauser & Wirth , which just opened a new, two-story building on 18 th Street. In the last year, French interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch also debuted his first American gallery on the penthouse floor of a pre-war building in Chelsea, featuring over eighty pieces from his own furniture brand.
Saturday Evening
As the sun sets over Manhattan, head back to the hotel to freshen up for dinner. If you’re staying in one of The Fifth’s spacious suites, your dedicated butler will happily shake up a martini in the room, or for a big lookout over the city, head to Nubeluz just down the street. The swanky bar, located on the rooftop of the new Ritz Carlton NoMad, boasts jaw-dropping views of the Empire State Building located nearby.
If you’re lucky enough to snag a dinner reservation at Verōnika , don’t skip out. The restaurant, helmed by Le CouCou restaurateur Stephen Starr, is located within Fotografiska , a global photography museum that started in Stockholm, within a ten-minute’s walk from the hotel. The Roman & Williams designed space is rosy and romantic, with a menu inspired by grand European cafes. A few favorites including the tuna and uni tartare, along with the chicken schnitzel and lobster omelet, the latter of which is dolloped with smoked Arctic char caviar. Finish the night with one of the espresso martini flights, before walking through Madison Square Park, and onwards toward the hotel.
Sunday Morning
New York City is undoubtedly one of the best shopping destinations in the world, and every trip reveals new treasures. After breakfast at the hotel, spend the late morning unearthing some of the standout stores downtown. Jewelry lovers will delight in the thoughtful curation of designers on view at Broken English’s new showroom on Crosby Street, like Sylvie Corbelin, Colette, and Foundrae. Furthermore, the Mexican designer, Aurora Lopez Mejia , makes gilded talismans in the form of earrings, pendants, rings, and bracelets hand-stamped with personal mantras (her studio in Soho is by appointment only.)
For something cozy and customized, the Lingua Franca townhouse on the corner of Jane and Washington Street is always a jovial pitstop. The brand’s bestselling line of ultra-soft cashmere sweaters are hand-stitched with slogans, monograms, and mantras that are meant to uplift and empower.
Meanwhile, The Roman & Williams Guild offers a covetable collection of artisan homewares and décor. The venue just opened a new, five-seat ‘Guild Bar’ between its La Mercerie restaurant and shop where you can sample imaginative cocktails out of gleaming crystal, all of which is available to take home.
Sunday Afternoon
In New York, Sunday lunch is a citywide affair, and there is no shortage of options to choose from. I Sodi in the West Village dishes out mouthwatering Tuscan cuisine, while Raoul’s in Soho has one of the best burgers around. RAF’s is another charming choice, with its daily rotation of French- and Italian-inspired baked goods, along with oysters, tartare, pastas, and meat dishes.
As the weekend comes to an end, squeeze in one last shop visit at Salter House’s new Manhattan showroom on 2 nd Street. The 1930s space oozes cottagecore vibes, with its hex tiles, bow motifs, and white brick balls, plus its delightful collection of natural clothes and housewares.
If you have time before your flight, walk to The Metrograph for an early evening movie followed by dinner. This tasteful, old-school theater shows a well-curated roster of independent films and has two chic bars plus a brasserie-style restaurant where you can toast to a fun-filled weekend in the Big Apple.

These Are the Underground Brands New York's Fashion Crowd Is Loving
Before second-skin tops officially became a thing late last year, they were all I would see on my daily work commute into Manhattan. Before Telfar became a global phenomenon, gracing Oprah Winfrey's Favorite Things List, it was the bag brand of choice for my Brooklyn fashion friends in the industry. If you notice a style or brand suddenly gaining favor within the city's creative community, chances are it'll be the next thing the rest of the globe is watching.
Essentially, what I'm getting at is that New Yorkers are pretty darn good at trend prediction . It's usually a long path for a thing to become a certified trend, but 99% of the time, where this trail begins is with the new or underground brands that build a devoted following. To get an idea of which names will be in the spotlight next year, I conducted an informal poll to see which emerging brands New Yorkers are clinging to the most. From sustainable loungewear labels to quirky, niche accessories, these are the designers and brands making waves right now in the city that never sleeps.
Marshall Columbia
Last year while I was doing research for another article, a friend suggested I check out Marshall Columbia, and it didn't take long for me to fall in love with its quirky and colorful pieces. Named after the designer behind the brand, Columbia launched in the midst of the pandemic in 2020 and has already been a go-to for sartorial risk-takers in New York. Dua Lipa and Miley Cyrus have worn its beaded and cutout pieces, and Ssense just picked up the label, so expect to see a lot more of it soon.
Shop the brand:
If New Yorkers need one thing, it's space. From apartments to subway commutes, space becomes a premium in a city filled with more than 8 million people. This same logic applies to handbags. When walking is the main mode of transportation, a purse that can hold all of the day's essentials (and anything that might be accumulated along the way) is a must. Canadian brand OMW Bags is a godsend for that reason. Made out of knitted, stretchy material, its pieces are roomy to the max, but in a way that's neither frumpy nor pedestrian.
Savant Studios
Here's one of those "if you know, you know" hidden gems. Savant Studios is a Brooklyn-based boutique that's enjoyed a cult following for its handcrafted leather pieces and uplifting graphic hoodies and shirts. Spearheaded by Michael Graham and a crew of creatives, the store also serves as a hub for community projects and other arts events in Bedstuy. The brand's hats are some of my personal favorites.
Louisa Ballou
Hard-core swimwear fanatics may already be familiar with Louisa Ballou, but if you have yet to discover its edgy dresses and bikinis, let me introduce you. The eponymous label hasn't been around long but has catapulted this year, appearing on the likes of SZA and Renell Medrano.
Since going to the beach isn't a huge part of New York City culture—other than a few summer trips to Far Rockaway or Broadway Beach—swimwear often has to pull double duty. Louisa Ballou's collection of printed, skin-revealing dresses and suits hit that coveted mix of swimwear and ready-to-wear, so it's good on the sand as well as the streets. Another connection to the city: Everything is made in New York.
If the past year has taught us anything, it's that loungewear can never be overrated. Buci is the latest name to know in a wave of cozy loungewear brands, but the emerging label does things a bit differently: Each item is made in New York City's garment district, constructed out of sustainably sourced fabrics like organic cotton and deadstock materials. Although the brand's terry cloth shorts would make a great partner for sitting on your couch, Buci also designs beautiful, minimalist separates that should earn a spot in your daily summer uniform.
Ask any cool Brooklyn fashion person about a brand they're most excited about, and I guarantee Raini Home will get a mention. A home décor offshoot of beloved Bedstuy boutique Sincerely, Tommy, the company sells a collection of artisan-crafted objects and small-batch furniture pieces. People with keen eyes are likely already familiar with its black-and-cream striped side table (it's a favorite on IG) and brutalist-style sling chair.
Up next, Recovery Slides Are the Next "Ugly" Shoe Trend We Can No Longer Ignore
Indya Brown is a fashion editor, stylist, and writer living in Los Angeles. While going to school at Columbia University in New York City, she got her feet wet in the fashion industry interning at Elle magazine, Harper's Bazaar, and New York magazine's The Cut . After graduating in 2016, she joined The Cut as a fashion assistant, eventually working her way up to fashion editor. There, she worked on a multitude of projects, including styling inbook feature stories for New York magazine's print issue, writing and pitching market stories for The Cut, and serving as fashion lead for The Cut's branded content. While New York has been her home for over 10 years, she moved to Los Angeles in the midst of the pandemic in 2020 for a new chapter. Now she is a fashion market editor for Who What Wear, focusing on emerging designers, rising trends on and off the internet, interior design, and BIPOC creatives and brands. Aside from her duties as a fashion market editor, Brown is also a freelance stylist and writer, working on national print and video commercial campaigns for Sephora, The Independent, and Cadillac. Her bylines also include Harper's Bazaar, Vox, and The New York Times. But once the computer goes down and the emails turn off, she's likely eating her way through Koreatown, hunting down vintage furniture, scoping out new outrageous nail designs to try, or taking a hot cycling class.
A non-negotiable.

More About New York City
New York City is traditionally broken up into five-boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. To the west, there's the island of Manhattan where you'll find most of the iconic attractions like Central Park, The Empire State Building and Times Square. It might be a good idea to give yourself plenty of time to explore this borough. To the north of Manhattan is the Bronx, known for Yankee Stadium and famous Bronx Zoo. Over on the eastside is Queens where you can explore a variety of museums off the beaten path like MoMA PS1, Queens Museum and New York Hall of Science. Over in Brooklyn, look out for the famous Brooklyn Bridge and Coney Island, both have been featured in countless movies and TV shows. Down south is Staten Island connected to Manhattan via the Staten Island Ferry, which gives you a scenic ride of New York Harbor.

Before You Go
- To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
- Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
- Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
- Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
- If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

Top Experiences
Central Park : You could easily spend all day at this park. It's home to numerous movie filming locations like Wollman Rink, known for most ice-skating scenes in New York City and Bethesda Terrace, that gorgeous arched terrace with the fountain outside of it with the angel on top, popular with romcoms. Just walk around the park and you'll get a sense of deja vu. The park is also home to the Central Park Zoo and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Statue of Liberty : A gift from the French, she's become a symbol of America. You can only reach her by ferry so make sure to book your ticket in advance to get an up-close and personal look and learn more about this piece of American history.
Empire State Building : Songs have been inspired by this building, the New York skyline wouldn't be quite as stylish without it. While not the tallest building in the city, this 102-story art deco inspired building still offers an amazing view of the city.
Times Square : If you're brave enough come for the epic New Year's Eve ball drop, otherwise come to marvel at the brightly lit square in all its glory on any other day of the year. It's located at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Ave and is surrounded by popular attractions, restaurants and shops.

Tips For Tourists On The New York City Subway For The First Time
- There are plenty of New York subway tips, one of which is to stay away from the yellow area to avoid accidents and incidents on the subway platform.
- One of the things to know about the NYC subway is that the numbers and letters on the New York subway map are more important than the colors.
- Pay attention to signs, announcements, and the subway map to navigate the subway system effectively and avoid getting lost.
No one can dispute that New York City is one of the ultimate travel destinations in the US and is where many people's dreams come true. From the epic foodie neighborhoods in NYC to the city's museums, stores, and brands, many things in the Big Apple have left their imprint on the United States and worldwide, all of which are found in this concrete jungle.
More than 8 million people call New York City home , and around one-third of them were born outside the country. The city attracts between 60 and 70 million tourists a year due to its diversity and liveliness, earning it the title of "cultural center of the world." As exciting as that sounds, getting around may seem difficult for first-timers, especially when taking the subway. So, how does the NYC subway work, exactly?
The subway New York City offers is one of the busiest in the country, and it can be challenging for newcomers to navigate safely and seamlessly. Therefore, here are a number of NYC subway tips for a safe, successful vacation in what is easily the most famous city in America!

Wondering How The New York City Subway Works?
Taking public transport in NYC for the first time? No need to worry; here are a number of additional, updated, and useful tips and information on the NYC subway system
Related: 10 Crazy Things You Should Know About New York City's Abandoned Subway Stations
Stay Away From The Yellow Area
Purpose: for safety and to avoid any incidents.
The yellow part of the subway seems obvious, doesn't it? Still, first-timers on New York’s subway would be shocked at how many passengers choose to disregard the line and stand in (or too close to) the yellow area at the edge of the subway station.
Sadly, after buying a New York subway pass for tourists, some unsavvy first-timers stand too close to the edge, which may result in a serious incident (some locals even do this, too). Therefore, passengers must keep their distance from the yellow area at all times, not only when a train is approaching the station.
Get Ready Well Before Your Intended Stop
Purpose: to avoid missing your stop.
Distractions aboard the New York subway are commonplace. Characters on the train may be so interesting that first-time passengers could miss their stop, ranging from adorable Mariachi bands (sometimes too loud) to children selling candy to downright vibrant New Yorkers.
Have fun on the ride, but be mindful. During peak times, it is better to get ready and head near the train's doors before the intended stop to avoid missing it due to door closure. The doors don't stay open for long, after all, and trying to fight one's way through a crowded train during rush hour to exit is not a pleasant experience when riding the NYC subway for the first time!
Read The Signs To Find Your Train Station
Purpose: to avoid getting lost.
Over 36 separate subway lines transport people between Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx. The majority of subways in NYC go below ground, as the name would imply. There are a few lines that cross above, though.
However, tourists will mostly be moving underground. The secret is to pay attention to the signs that identify the subway lines that each station serves and the direction in which each train is traveling.

Pay Attention To The Signs & Announcements For The Previous & Next Stations
Purpose: to know when to get off and reach the intended destination.
Modern subways contain light-up graphics that show which station tourists are on the route for, but older trains will not . Travelers should not be afraid if they miss the graphics and station signs, though, because the conductor will always make clear which stop they are at and which station is coming up.
Passengers can also see signs for the station the train has just pulled into by looking out the window if they miss the announcement. Additionally, each train car contains a New York subway map spread of the full subway network, making it easier to learn how to use the subway in NYC , even as a newbie.
Follow The NYC Subway Map’s Numbers & Letters But Not The Colors
Purpose: to understand the subway map.
Travelers pondering how to use the NYC subway as a tourist should take the map's letters and numbers into account (the colors aren't quite as important). Travelers may see the many lines on the NYC subway map in a variety of colors and counts; they should make sure they choose the appropriate subway line by letter or number since New Yorkers don't really refer to the train lines by their colors.
This is because, for example, despite the blue line showing lines A, C, and E, these train tracks ultimately diverged, and tourists can find themselves in an entirely different and even unintended location from where they started.
For more information, check out a guide to using the NYC subway and how to ride its trains .
Choose An Appropriate NYC MetroCard
Purpose: to get the most suitable card for tourists (not locals).
Two different NYC subway card types are available: an Unlimited Ride card and a normal Pay-Per-Ride card. If travelers buy the Unlimited 7-Day MetroCard, they can take the bus and metro as much as they choose and use the subway like a true New Yorker.
If tourists choose Pay-Per-Ride, they can utilize Tap-To-Pay instead of purchasing a MetroCard. They can touch their credit or debit card on the screen and even use their phone's wallet to pay.
- Costs : The cost of an Unlimited 7-Day MetroCard is $34, including a $1 card charge. Each subway ride costs $2.75 with a standard Pay-Per-Ride card, though travelers get one free transfer to a bus.
Check If Your Destination Is Uptown Or Downtown
Purpose: to select the right subway platform.
So, how do tourists use the NYC subway without getting lost, even with all the maps and tips available? Well, one answer to this is that travelers must select the appropriate platform, which tends to be based on whether the train goes uptown or downtown.
Additionally, certain subway stations feature distinct entrances for uptown or downtown-bound trains. This implies that to go in the desired direction, travelers might need to cross the street. Entry to both uptown and downtown platforms is often available from each station door at express stations.

Know The Difference Between Red And Green Globes
Purpose: to understand the subway's operating hours.
Travelers may notice that most subway stations in NYC feature either a red or a green globe. These were initially put in place to inform passengers which stations are open 24/7, referred to with a green globe, and which stations are closed at night, marked with a red globe. The red globes were also intended to indicate exit-only staircases.
However, most residents and tourists to New York City probably ignore these markings.
Change Your Train Line Using Pedestrian Tunnels
Purpose: to save money and time.
Another mistake first-timers on the NYC subway system make is leaving one stop and going to another to catch a different train, incurring another fare. Some stations are connected to other stations via pedestrian tunnels; using those tunnels between the two stations can save travelers time and money.
Once someone heads down the subway, they shouldn't need to leave and enter another area; everything will be connected.
If You Need Help, Ask Someone!
Purpose: to get help from a local (or a conductor) in the know.
Travelers who are unsure if they are standing on the right side of the platform or boarding the correct train shouldn't hesitate to ask someone. They might be astonished to learn that a lot of New Yorkers are pretty friendly, and some even like helping out tourists.
Travelers can also ask the conductor aboard the train, who often points at each station's black and white striped boards. It's always better to speak up and ask questions rather than to be stuck in the wrong subway car headed toward a completely different destination.
Avoid Staring At People In The Metro
Purpose: to avoid offending (and potentially angering) anyone.
The New York City subway is typically one of the most fascinating places in the Big Apple for people watching; however, passengers should try to keep their eyes off others, for the most part. Looking without staring is usually fine; however, just like in most big cities around the world, gazing at someone for too long is a surefire way to offend them (and maybe even anger them).
Additionally, in New York, citizens normally keep calm when they see a famous person or an unusual character—the less attention someone brings to themselves, especially when new to the city, the better. Many long-time residents also claim that blending in helps keep them safe in NYC during their commutes.
Watch Your Valuables
Purpose: to avoid falling victim to pickpocketing.
A useful piece of NYC subway advice is to safeguard valuables. Travelers should avoid putting their wallets and other valuable items in their back pockets. Pickpocketing can happen anywhere, so keeping one's guard up is essential when traveling not just the NYC subway but any public transportation. That also applies to electronics, like phones, tablets, headphones, speakers, and whatever else holds a high value.
As tempting as it is to get some work or study done on the subway using a laptop or tablet, it can be a super quick and easy target for thieves. Instead, it may be safer to do any work on a smartphone, holding it very tight or having a case with a connecting string/cable to one's pants/jacket/bag.
Don't forget that there are other ways to get around NYC besides the subway .
Download Games To Play
Purpose: to pass the time and stay entertained.
One of the best ways to pass the time on the NYC subway is to play games on a phone. However, sometimes there might not be internet connectivity in the tunnels, so it's best to have a pre-downloaded game like Candy Crush, Angry Birds, Sudoku, or whatever one enjoys playing.
It is surprising just how much faster the time goes by on the subway when having a distraction (a good old-fashioned book or even a Kindle also works as well).
Remember That The NYC Subway Never Stops
Purpose: to reduce "last train" anxiety and relax.
NYC is known as the city that never sleeps. Unsurprisingly, its extensive system of metro trains also never rests; the NYC Subway runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
The subway really is the easiest way to get around the Big Apple, and it's rare that someone ever needs to hurry to get the last train at one of the system's 493 stations. As such, travelers can ditch the notion of rushing around for fear of missing the last train (there are plenty, and there's always another train to get people home!).
Not all lines run through the night, though, so refer to the NYC subway's late-night service to see what's operational.
Never Forget To Pay The Subway Fare
Purpose: to avoid fines.
The fares on the NYC Subway cost $2.75 for most riders (there are reduced fares for those 65 and older and certain other categories of people). People can pay using OMNY - the contactless fare payment system - or a MetroCard.
Both ways are simple and easy to use. Up to four riders can use the same payment method; just tap or swipe the appropriate number of times for each rider. Whatever the case, travelers must never forget to pay (or indeed try to fare dodge altogether), as this will incur penalties for fare evasion . In fact, those who enter the NYC subway system or ride buses without paying are subject to a $50 or $100 fine !

Bring Cleaning Wipes For The Seats
Purpose: to boost hygiene and reduce the risk of illness.
Another good plan for riders of the New York City subway is to bring cleaning wipes. Before taking a seat on the subway, many native New Yorkers and visitors wipe down their seats before getting comfy. This is good practice whether there is an active COVID-19 outbreak or it's regular cold and flu season (the subway is a germ field and one of the easiest ways to get sick in NYC, with all the daily passengers that commute!).
Any standard disinfectant wipes, whether Clorox, Windex, or store-brand wipes, will do. The key is finding a product to kill bacteria and clean whatever dirt, oil, or debris could be on the seat. Luckily, most NYC subway cars feature plastic seating, which is easy to clean off between stops.
Bring Headphones To Listen To Music Or Stream Shows/Movies
Purpose: to reduce exposure to subway noise.
For those who don't want to hear noise during their trip on the New York City subway, bringing a pair of headphones along for the ride for music or to watch a show or movie can be a lifesaver. Generally, it's normal to see New Yorkers in subways with their earbuds or headphones on while riding between subway lines/stops.
However, passengers don't want to be unaware of their surroundings for safety. For example, if the music playing through the headphones is too loud and someone can't hear an emergency alert or a problem in their subway car, headphones may pose an issue. As such, try to keep one ear open or have the volume turned down enough so that the subway noise is drowned out but without risking missing any issues or announcements.

Perfect Your PPC Marketing Strategy Paid Search Checklist
1. define your goals.
Are you aiming to increase web traffic or grow your social media presence? Figure out why you’re leveraging paid media in the first place and build your strategy from there. Having clearly defined goals in mind will help you focus on your brand’s key priorities.
2. Outline a TOFU/MOFU/BOFU Strategy
Designing strategies that cater to all three stages of the buyer journey ensures that you’re maximizing your brand’s reach. Every user at every stage is valuable—and you have to make sure you’re creating paid media content that speaks to each audience type.
3. Research Keywords for Search
Effective paid media is tied to targeting the right keywords. If you’re leveraging paid search ads to appear on SERPs (search engine results pages), then in-depth research is necessary. Bid on the keywords that are most relevant to your business to trigger only the most effective ad appearances.
4. Craft Engaging Ad Copy & Stand-Out Creative
Gather your team—because it’s time to start coming up with ad copy that wins attention. The key is to resonate with your audience and inspire engagement. Be real. Be relatable. And most importantly, don’t underestimate the power of creativity.
5. Create Conversion-Friendly Landing Pages
Do the landing pages on your website effectively push visitors further down the sales funnel? If not, you’re letting potential customers slip through your fingers. Optimize each of your landing pages so that they nudge users towards converting.
6. Choose Your Paid Platforms
The options are plenty when it comes to paid advertising, including Google, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, Microsoft, and Pinterest among others. Analyze who your target demographic is, research where it’s best to connect with them, and then target the platforms where you wish to build awareness.
7. Build Campaigns & Ad Groups/Sets
If you’re ready to build your paid media ad campaign, you’ll find that it will be further broken down into “ad groups” to ensure more effective pay-per-click advertising. These ad groups house one or more ads that have similar targets or categories. Let’s say your brand’s website features categories such as clothing, shoes, and accessories. Creating ad groups according to keywords that fall under these categories will help the PPC system decide when to show ads for these products.
8. Don’t Forget About Retargeting Ads
Retargeting ads are bound to succeed because it’s a second shot at a conversion. Visitors have shown interest in the product/service once before, and sometimes all it takes is a little reminder to push them to the checkout page. So don’t forget to retarget and aim better this time.
9. Run A/B Tests
In the world of paid media, what works and what doesn’t? You’ll have to run A/B tests to find out! Whether you’re testing which keywords bring more traffic or which social platforms earn more ad engagement, you won’t find out what really works for your brand until you test it.
10. Track Your Results
Revisit your initial goals. Did your efforts bring about the results you expected? Tracking results is an essential step in your brand’s paid advertising campaigns. The data you collect from currently running ads will help lay the foundation for your future campaigns.
11. Adjust as Needed
After tracking your results, you’ll be able to see where adjustments are necessary. There’s always room for improvement, so keep striving to consistently resonate and build trust with your audience—it’s how to create paid ads that pay off.

10 New York City-Based Outdoor Brands You Should Know
It might be far from the mountains but with a never-ending well of creative energy it's no surprise Gotham makes its share of great outdoor gear

New York City is a nucleus for street fashion, skyscrapers, Michelin stars, and shopping districts. Finance, media, and real estate dominate as industries, but with a population of 8.4 million, there’s no shortage of people committed to other pursuits—the exploration and enjoyment of the outdoors included. It's not surprising that some seriously talented artists and designers across the city have started outdoor brands that combine their resourcefulness as urban commuters with their love for recreating outside.
From a socially-conscious power brand to an ultralight hiking gear lab, these companies share more in common than just living in NYC . Many started in (and are still running out of) the founders’ homes, if not small studios, and their gear is made for hyper-niche (i.e. passionate) audiences. Each brand has a sharp design with a timeless aesthetic, staying true to New York sensibilities. “If I can’t look at it all day, it’s not allowed to exist here,” says Trevor Davis, founder of William Ellery . “New Yorkers don’t have much space so anything that we make or want or have, we have to really love.”
Whether you live in NYC or not, these 10 outdoor brands are worth getting to know if you love collecting unique and useful gear. And if you’re local, keep your calendar open for their events across the city, from group hikes to collabs to pop-ups.
10 New York City-based Outdoor Brands
Allmansright
Year Founded: 2020 Specialty: Ultralight hiking gear Hero Item: Eco Liten 35
Based in the Bronx, Allmansright is an ultralight “outdoor gear lab” using lightweight backpacks , sling bags , and accessories as a vessel to diversify the hiking community and inspire hikers to protect the environment. “Objects can help people care more about the environment,” said Livio Melo, an artist and designer who launched the brand in 2020. “Gear can really show you what’s at stake in the immediate, and allow you to see what’s at stake on a larger scale, too.” After his first few overnights in 2018, Melo, who grew up in the Dominican Republic before moving to NYC, fully immersed himself in the UL community. Carrying less weight to travel faster and farther intrigued him, as did getting closer to nature. Without bringing as many supplies, maybe just a tarp to sleep under, the experience of sleeping outside became more visceral to him. And he wants to share that with others of all identities, body types, and abilities. Look for Allmansright’s recent collaboration with William Ellery, a blackberry purple waterproof bear bag .
Year Founded: 2020 Specialty: Women’s hiking apparel Hero Item: Midlayer_01
With backgrounds in fashion, Chelsea Rizzo and Allison Levy didn’t feel like themselves in the obnoxiously bright hiking clothes that make up the majority of women’s outdoor apparel. Rizzo said she felt like she was suiting up in an outdoor costume rather than wearing something aligned with her everyday fashion sense. So the pair teamed up to create Hikerkind , a women’s outdoor apparel brand that’s based around style systems, like a capsule wardrobe but for getting on the trail. The Base Bra and Base Shorts function together as a baselayer set but also integrate with everything else, from the gridded fleece Midlayer_01 to the trail-friendly Dress_01 to the straight-legged Trousers_01 . Lines are crisp, fabrics are technical, and might we add that their color choices and names are divine: lichen, alpenglow, buckwheat, redwood, conifer, and truffle. Nothing is overly feminine or loud, allowing nature to steal the spotlight. Hikerkind’s Hike Club also gets together every month, in NYC and beyond, to hike, exchange books, and hang out. Coming soon: their very own resale outlet .
William Ellery
Year Founded: 2019 Specialty: Limited-edition expedition gear Hero Item: Starchart Shirt
Housed in Trevor Davis’ 800-square-foot Bushwick studio, William Ellery is a bespoke expedition gear label known for eclectic items that you won’t find anywhere else—like the signature Rec Socks made from possum wool, the iridescent June Bug Jacket as a nod to the ingenuity of insects, and the pocketed mesh bags of the Beachcomber Gear collection. Limited to small batches, almost everything in the shop is handmade by Davis, who encourages customers to personalize their gear to fit their needs once it leaves his studio. “I’m 100% behind anything anyone wants to do to a William Ellery garment,” Davis said. “Once it’s yours, it’s yours. You should do whatever you want with it.” Rather than looking to traditional outdoor adventurers for inspiration, he turns his eye toward scientists and explorers such as cargo-pant-clad Jane Gooddall and oceanographer Jacques Cousteau to inform his next projects. And his research is well documented: Every collection comes with a Research Catalog , essentially a zine with all the scientific references and specs for the products.
Ita Leisure
Year Founded: 2021 Specialty: Camp furniture and goods Hero Item: Leisure Chair
From the bright blue, orange, or yellow Leisure Chair to the vibrantly checkered Ewe Beach Towels , Ita Leisure’s design choices reinforce the notion that time spent outdoors is rich and diverse. This Black- and woman-owned outdoor furniture and goods brand launched in summer 2021 with designs that honor cultural and ancestral connection to communities of color. The towels are inspired by Ghanaian kente cloth, the woven chair and table represent traditional African crafts, and the Ile Blanket graphics pay respect to Nigerian fabrics. “When searching for outdoor serenity, I was so often struck by a sense of discomfort and hyper visibility as a Black woman,” wrote Nigerian-British founder Jade Akintola. “Having made the decision to prioritize time outdoors, I set out to create products that aligned with, alluded to, and called in my community.” The brand’s core belief is that “leisure is for everyone.” And comfort is a throughline, with products that make sitting, carrying, drying, and lounging in the outdoors more inclusive.
FSP Outdoors
Year Founded: 2012 Specialty: Utilitarian bags and packs Hero Item: Rucksack
When it’s broken, you fix it. That’s been Blair Kemp’s philosophy behind his brand FSP Outdoors (named after his travels to the iconic Fanispan, Vietnam’s highest peak). From his Brooklyn apartment, Kemp has been making utilitarian bags and packs since 2012. Strong, simple, and adaptable are words that appear on FSP’s website over and over, as well as each bag’s gridded nylon, leather accents, mesh pockets, and monochrome and blocked color designs. Every little component, from the buckles to the straps, are intended to be mended and repaired many times so they can conceivably last forever. Kemp isn’t really interested in making many bucks; he’s more captivated by the process of creating, be it memories or useful products. “It’s about more than making bags, it’s an avenue to do other creative things, too,” Kemp told Field Mag. “It’s a reason to go outside, a reason to go on trips, a reason to go places with friends, and create more.”
Eighteen East
Year Founded: 2018 Specialty: Handmade men’s apparel Hero Item: Shirt jacket
On the other hand, gorpcore has its role to play in the world of technical fashion. Launched in 2018 by New York designer Antonio Ciongoli, GORP-adjacent and skate-inspired Eighteen East makes men’s apparel out of interesting textiles with plenty of pockets, texture, patches, and allure. There’s the Jaipur Easy Shorts with delicate patchwork kantha stitches and the Benny Hiking Pant that are the most stylish cargos you can probably find, along with bucket hats, 1000-denier tote bags , and waterproof ripstop jackets that you can find as easily on trail as on the streets. In an attempt to curb overproduction and overconsumption, Ciongoli searches for products that “prioritize integrity and creativity over shortsighted profitability.” That’s why many of the pieces are slowly constructed with handmade techniques—and at limited quantities and high price points—and dropped as collaborations with harmonious streetwear brands like Bodega and Earth\Studies .
The Arrivals
Year Founded: 2014 Specialty: Outerwear Hero Item: AER Down puffer
This collaborative outerwear design studio out of Brooklyn is probably to blame for keeping puffy jackets en vogue. Using gorgeous post-consumer textiles, often in subdued and understated colors that mimic nature’s palette, The Arrivals develops collections of all-weather jackets for men and women that look cool and keep its wearer toasty—like the shin-length TURBO Sleeper puffy and the three-layer HAVEN Parka . They also make select accessories, (their latest collection of angular 3D-printed optics is completely sold out). The brand definitely toes the line between high fashion and outdoor gear, but the vision statement clears things up: “We believe outerwear is a tool for discovery, and we are committed to developing mindful out-of-doors tools for the path ahead.” Self expression in the outdoors is both for playfulness and performance, especially when your jacket, as elevated as it may be, is continuously tested by the design team for improvement.
Year Founded: 2006 Specialty: Off-grid energy Hero Item: CampStove 2+
Around 2006, Jonathan Cedar and Alec Drummond met at the Smart Design conference in NYC where they bonded over sustainable design. They started tinkering on weekends with concepts for a wood-burning camping stove. It took six more years for them to finesse their design and launch it into the world as BioLite. Now their company is known for more than just stoves; its headlamps, portable lanterns, solar panels, generators, and fire pits frequently land in our roundups. Headquartered in DUMBO with another office in Nairobi, Kenya, the company has always held social and environmental impact as an important dimension to the brand. While their products work for overlanders and hikers, they’re also distributed to people in India and Uganda who are in need of clean and reliable energy. Plus, BioLite is Climate Neutral Certified, meaning it measures, reduces, and offsets its carbon footprint every year.
Store: Outlandish
Year Founded: 2023 Specialty: Hiking shop and event space Hero Item: Outlandish x Ciele CLBCap
Outlandish is much more than a hiking store. One of only a few Black-owned outdoor stores, the red brick Crown Heights shop is also a space for people of color to connect and reconnect with the outdoors. Shelves are stocked with local and POC-owned brands (like Ita Leisure and Allmansright, also on this list). A bookshelf features nature writing by people of color. And they’re already collaborating with companies like Ciele to create custom gear and organizations like Outdoor Afro to cultivate community. Co-founders Ken Bernard and Benje Williams met at REI, but they didn’t see themselves represented in retail or recreating outside. “Our belief is that people of color have belonged to the outdoors from the beginning,” they wrote . Along with biweekly hikes (that leave via shuttle from the store to make things easy), they’re planning a roster of events to host, like film screenings and concerts.
Store: Hatchet Outdoor Supply Co.
Year Founded: 2013 Specialty: Fashionable outdoor apparel Hero Item: Gramicci short
Adventure means something different to everyone. Making the trek out to Rockaway for the surf or heading to the Catskills is adventurous, but so is just navigating the city. Anything can happen. In 2013, Brooklyn’s Gene Han opened Hatchet Outdoor Supply Co. and brought his gearhead dreams to life to equip 21st century city-dwelling adventurers. In the bright and white-walled store on Atlantic Ave., you can find Klattermusen alpine packs and velour track jackets, The North Face down sleeping bags and Fair Isle sweaters. Hatchet also stocks a wide variety of sneakers, a nod to Han’s other hobby. (He co-founded the sneaker boutique, Alumni .) The outdoor store’s curation is based on Han’s good taste and eye for design. He brings in stuff he likes and finds useful, not necessarily stuff that’s riding the gorpcore trend. If you happen to be in Los Angeles, Hatchet has a second location between Little Tokyo and the Arts District.
