Sorting, ranking, and search results

Cool Hawaii wants to make your searches as relevant as possible. That's why we offer many ways to help you find the right experiences for you.

On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You'll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.

If you see a Badge of Excellence label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Cool Hawaii over a 12-month period.

The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We're always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

What should I bring on my catamaran tour?

We encourage you to be prepared for your charter with your swimwear, towels, and reef safe sunscreen. The state of Hawai’i allows only reef safe sunscreen, which should be easy to find locally. We also have reef safe sunscreen on board. We will provide all of your snorkeling equipment, including floatation noodles. Please note, we absolutely do not allow full face masks on any of our charters. We also encourage you to bring something warm for the return sail, such as a light jacket or sweater.

What should I expect when sailing aboard a catamaran?

Our vessels are designed for sailing, offering both agility and stability on the water. With a cabin offering shaded seating space, as well as refuge from the sun under our sails, our vessels ensure a comfortable experience both in and out of the sun. We have trampolines at our bow that offer lounging opportunities and a chance to peer into the beautiful water as we sail across it. We have ladders that descend into the water with hand rails to assist you going in and out. We also have freshwater showers at our stern.

What sets Sail Maui apart from other tours?

At Sail Maui, sailing is what we do best. Our captain and crew are passionate about what they do, and their enthusiasm is catching. They are fun, knowledgeable about the island and the waters, and they love to share what they know. Above and beyond that, we offer some of the most competitive rates on the island. As one of the few companies that truly values sailing we offer the best catamaran sailing experience available. While our vessels are sizable, we limit our passenger count to ensure that your experience is always spacious and intimate.

About Kai Kanani

We are a family-owned, 30+ year-old company committed to the quality of your experience in our marine sanctuary. South Maui and the Wailea-Makena area are prized for their beautiful beaches, calm and clear emerald-blue waters, and near perfect weather year round. We gratefully acknowledge our kuleana (responsibility) as caretakers of this South Maui paradise. As a company, we treat each other, our guests and our neighbors with Aloha and respect and we believe that is what keeps Maui such an amazing and beautiful place to visit and to live.

a boat on a beach near a body of water

The Kai Kanani II is the only commercial catamaran that lives in South Maui, moored off of Maluaka Beach in Makena. Seven days-a-week, she takes passengers on the short cruise out to Molokini Crater, just 3 miles away, to swim and play in the clearest water in all of Hawaii. Five nights-a-week, the Kai Kanani II raises her sails, taking advantage of our famous afternoon trade winds on our Adventure Sunset Sail. These trips and other special offerings are all crewed by the best group of men and women to grace the blue channels of these islands. Their goal is to create the best memories you’ll take home after your time on Maui.

We feature fresh island foods, all curated by Wailea’s own Spoon & Key Market, a chef-inspired deli and restaurant using ingredients that are locally-sourced and house-cured. Our bar features Maui’s Organic Ocean Vodka, Kula Rum, Fy Gin and wines from MauiWine in Ulupalakua. Kai Kanani’s tours are saturated in local experience and cuisine so that you go away feeling connected and refreshed.

The Beach-Loading Pros

South Maui has a unique beauty unlike anywhere else on the island. For a boat company, there’s one very important feature: there are no boat harbors!

Because of this, Kai Kanani’s passengers “beach-load,” walking through the surf and up on to our gorgeous 65-foot catamaran. Our crew are experts at beach-loading, taking pride in our ability to get everyone of our guests on board as dry and safe as possible for your upcoming tour

For us, it’s part of the adventure! So come prepared to get a little wet while getting on-board. Then sit back and relax while our crew takes care of your every need during your adventure in Maui. Kai Kanani Sailing Charters staff is here to help you and make your adventure on the Kai Kanani II memorable, safe & fun. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns about any part of your excursion with us or any other part of your Maui vacation . We look forward to seeing you out on the water and we’ll see you on-board!

What shoes should you wear? We suggest sandals or flip-flops, shoes that are easily removed as you walk across the beach barefoot. And please bring a towel! Once on board, you’re welcome to wear your sandals or whatever type of shoe you’re comfortable in.

Such a great time. We had so much fun with Capt Anthony, Mikey, Eric, Adam, and Dwight. The food was fabulous. Sounds crazy, but true. Great drinks. Beautiful music. A little slice of paradise in the evening. Highly recommend!

The sunset adventure cruise was fantastic. The captain and crew were welcoming, fun, and informative. Four light courses were served during the cruise and champagne was passed around during sunset. Would recommend for couples or friends looking for a chill evening.

We had an amazing day! We were picked up at our hotel and taken to the beach to meet our catamaran. Then -Crater, fish eel, turtles - breakfast, snack, lunch, ending with cocktails. Service was outstanding! Highly recommend!!!!

A true highlight of our trip to Maui! This tour was wonderful! The crew was beyond friendly & helpful, the snorkeling at the crater & additional stop to swim with sea turtles was truly amazing! The food was fabulous too! Would not hesitate to do this tour again!

You’re here to have a good time, learn about the ocean, Maui, whales (seasonal) and all that good stuff. We’re not operated by the corporate suits; we’re a team of like-minded, fun-going, salty sailors that absolutely love our jobs and all the cool people we get to meet! When you come on a trip with us we promise to do everything in our power to make sure you have the time of your life out on the water.

Just returned from Maui. Family and I did a Friday night sunset cruise. Highly recommend this trip. Capt. Phil and crew are top notch. They work hard to make sure you have fun. Great food and drink, whale watching and great views. The crew was very careful loading and unloading passengers at the start and end of the trip. Overall a great time. If you want to sail with a competent and caring crew, then Sea Maui is the place to be.

This was my third catamaran snorkel trip and it was the best one yet! First and foremost the staff was amazing. Throughout the trip the entire crew stayed engaged in conversation, and not just with one person. Hands down best part of my week stay here in Maui! Lunch was fantastic-drinks were flowing-& we made it back in a timely manner! Thank you so much to the crew of Sea Maui for being the best part of my vacation!

I had the joy of going on a Sea Maui trip. The boat was large and the vibe the crew had was amazing. They served us breakfast and lunch with a smile, had great drinks and music, and made us laugh the whole time. I chose to do SNUBA, and it was worth every extra penny. If I went back today, I would use Sea Maui and I recommend them to all of my friends who are going.

The crew and management at Sea Maui always go above and beyond to make sure their patrons have the best experience possible. They serve good food and drinks and have a smaller amount of people they go out with and they offer something for everyone. They are def my go to when I’m looking to get out in the beautiful waters of Maui.

The Reviews Are In!

This is our third trip with Maui Snorkel Charters. Doug, Trish, and Mandy are so knowledgeable and friendly. They go out in the water with you and point out different fish and the turtles. The food is great and the snorkeling is superb. They will, take you on 4-5 different spots and weather permitting the backside of Molokini which has amazing views.

Mandy, Kiki and Captain Doug promised us that this morning would be THE BEST DAY EVER and boy, do they deliver their promises! It's my first time in Hawaii and I picked up their flyer off the wall outside of a local restaurant. Little did I know back then that they had the best offer amongst all their competitors even the ones recommended by our hotel.

Amazing service. If you are taking a snorkel tour by boat, Maui Snorkel Charters is the best available. New boat. Friendly crew. Great masks.

We went out the morning of January 25 (early part of whale season) and we're able to snorkel with the added bonus of whale watching. We saw about ten humpback whales and calves fluke slapping, fin waving, breaching, diving, etc.

Highly recommended!

Doug, Trish and Crew is absolutely No Ka Oi! We chartered them for a birthday group and it was by far the best experience ever. We visited the back side of Molokini and around to watch Humpback Whales. Do yourself a favor and try them out for the best personal experience. We became familiar with Maui Snorkel Charters when they donated their boat, crew and time to help clean the reef. Great time with great people!

Doug, Trish and crew are fantastic.  We've been out with them several times and they treat us like family.  No other tour I've ever been on caters to the customer like they do.   They always seem to find the fish, whales, dolphins, turtles and excitement.  Thanks so much for making our day the best ever!

We had an amazing time snorkeling with Maui Snorkel Charters! Everyone was very nice, the boat wasn't crowded, and we got to see multiple turtles. We snorkeled 5 separate times along the trip. I highly recommend snorkeling with this group!

If you're looking to go on a snorkeling adventure and want to see the most places in one trip, than look no further. I work on boats and this company is where its at. We stopped 5 times at different locations, where most boats stop once or twice at most. The captain and crew are so friendly and are very knowledgeable about the marine life and areas we stopped. I had been wanting g to do the backwall of Molokini for years and that finally happened with Maui Snorkel Charters. Thanks for the great experience.

Maui Snorkel Charters trip out of Kihei boat ramp is hands down the best snorkel trip we've ever been on in over 25 years of coming to Maui.  The crew are top notch and they certainly gave us our money's worth.  They limit the number of passengers to 18 which means you are not overcrowded when get into the water.

Wonderful family owned and operated business. Because they cater to smaller groups, participants get more snorkel time in the water than some of the large group charters. Our group was able to snorkel in five different areas with guides who were patient in teaching us what to do (it was our first time). They gave us interesting info about our snorkel sites and pointed out cool fish, starfish, turtles and an octopus during our outing.

The trip was excellent. Parking at the Maalea harbor dock is a pain. Our Lanai on site guide, Russ was a wealth of information and had as much fun with us and the other couple as we did with him and the tour. A nice day was had by all.

Wonderful Day in Lanai

A fantastic day trip providing lots of background on the island and an opportunity to view most of it. Russ is a great tour guide and made certain we had a great time. He also provided some recommendations for our aftern ... more oon at the beach. I absolutely recommend this tour to anyone looking to get the most out of a day trip to Lanai.

Amazing Event

Gorgeous day on the water, I liked how this one goes all the way over to Lanai versus Molokini area!

Loved the tour, well planned and executed

Loved the tour, it’s well timed as it felt I had enough time in water at both Molokini and turtle town. The crew is very good and they really make sure you are well taken care of. This is also an excellent opportunity ... more for whale spotting, I did a whale spotting tour as well and this one was better. The slide is awesome and everything is very family friendly.

Fantastic adventure!

We had a fantastic day! everything was well organized and people were so friendly. It was a great experience and carefree. Thanks!

Maui Ocean Riders

Maui Ocean Riders

End of an era.

It is with a sad heart to announce that we will no longer be in operation. After months of consideration, research and realization I have decided that the investment required to put Ocean Riders back together is just too great. It takes a special boat to handle the conditions we encounter circumnavigating Lana'i. To all of you that have experienced the "exciting" channel crossings and the trek down the north shore passing the shipwrecks you know what I'm talking about :) There are many other factors besides just replacing the vessel that have contributed to the decision such as storage, equipment replacement and catering, to name a few. I feel fortunate to have even had the opportunity to do this as a 'job' for the past 16 years and consider it an honor to be a part of the Ocean Riders' legacy that started back in 1988. Thank you to everyone that ever stepped foot on the boat with me. I will never forget all the great times and amazing people that I got to spend my days with on the water. Mahalo Nui Loa, Captain Chad P.S. Bogey misses the boat but is doing just fine ;)

Hang on tight for a Hawaii boat tour trip you will never forget!

The Original Lanai Tour Established in 1988 Testimonials

We went on this trip 3 or 4 years ago and enjoyed it so much that we did it again, but this time brought more friends and family. There are aspects of the tour that were exactly the same as the first time but my favorite part of this tour is that it changes up based upon conditions, etc. This tour is an adventure for sure and will be a consistent stop on any trip to Maui. Crew is friendly and informative. A must do!

Amazing day! I highly recommend taking this tour when in Maui. The crew was fantastic! The sights are amazing, boat ride was a lot of fun, snorkeling off the coast of Lanai was incredible!

Absolutely top notch experience with Ocean Riders today. Really enjoyed the small group experience and great snorkel locations, the circumnavigation of Lanai, Captain Chad and ocean dog Bogie, great food and overall fun experience. Highly recommend booking a tour with them.

Captain Chad is very knowledgeable and skilled. Storm swells made the journey from Maui to Lanai a little more adventurous - but we knew we were in good hands as Chad did a great job navigating. We took the tour circumnavigating Lanai and loved the snorkeling spots. Beautiful scenery, breaks spaced out between rising, snorkeling, lunch. Definitely recommend.

day boat trips maui

By Shannon Wianecki Photographs by Michelle Mishina Kunz

Shannon Wianecki grew up in Hawaii and writes about the islands regularly.

Maui is the Goldilocks island: It is neither too big nor too small, and for its three million annual visitors, its perfect year-round temperature, rainbow-splashed volcanic summits and sugary beaches are just right. But last August, Maui’s equilibrium met disaster. Catastrophic wildfires reduced the historic town of Lahaina to ash, claiming more than 100 lives . Conflicting messages urged visitors to stay away and let the island heal, but also to come and help sustain the economy. Eight months later, the message is more unified that Maui is ready to greet tourists again. Housing remains a critical need for displaced residents. Lahaina will take years to rebuild. But Maui’s inherent beauty and hospitality remain as vibrant as ever. It’s a great time to explore Central and South Maui, where new cocktail bars, outrigger canoe tours and Indigenous art exhibits reveal the community’s creativity and resilience.

Recommendations

  • The 10,000-foot summit of Haleakalā National Park (pronounced with an emphasis on “la”) has a view of the rising sun, volcanic vistas and some of the planet’s rarest plants and birds.
  • The Hale Hō‘ike‘ike museum showcases Hawaiian artwork, carved deities and a redwood plank surfboard owned by the legendary swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku.
  • Balai Pata is a new restaurant that celebrates Filipino flavors with savory soups, desserts big enough for two and monthly karaoke nights.
  • The Wailea Beach Path meanders along South Maui’s photogenic coast between posh resorts and the deep blue Pacific.
  • The hiking trails at ‘Īao Valley State Monument (pronounced EE-ow) penetrate the lush West Maui Mountains, winding past waterfalls and taro patches.
  • Enormous murals by Small Town Big Art , a public art project, in colorful and historic Wailuku town, are worth taking a stroll to see, and they’re navigable by an online map.
  • Blue Water Rafting ’s exhilarating tours of the Kanaio Coast explore hidden coves, sea caves and charismatic marine life.
  • Ho‘okipa Beach Park , one of the world’s top surf spots, is also a great place to spy on napping sea turtles.
  • Oao Sushi Bar & Grill offers beautifully prepared Japanese fare, such as inventive sushi rolls and purple-yam pot de crème, in a Wailea shopping center.
  • Tikehau Lounge serves seasonal craft cocktails made with local spirits and garnished with tiny katana swords and surfboards.
  • Kaohu Store is a mom-and-pop grocery that produces the island’s best poke, raw fish mixed with traditional seasonings such as ground kukui nuts and seaweed.
  • Tails Up Maui , a partnership between a local chef and a fisherman, serves excellent fish sandwiches and chicken plates.
  • Wailuku Coffee Co. is the place to stop for Maui-grown coffee or espresso while exploring Wailuku.
  • Esters Fair Prospect , a charming tropical bar on Wailuku’s Main Street, serves daiquiris made with a choice of three dozen rums and appetizers featuring fresh marlin.
  • Mama’s Fish House , a celebrated restaurant on a secluded lagoon, lists the names of the fishermen who caught the snapper and octopus on its menu.
  • On Saturday mornings, the Upcountry Farmers Market is a miniature street fair with live music and vendors offering a bounty of Maui-grown produce and prepared foods.
  • ‘Oko‘a Farm Store sells a cornucopia of organic tropical fruits and vegetables in fresh, dried and powdered form.
  • T. Komoda Store and Bakery , which has served the Maui community for more than a century, sells out of its cream puffs and butter rolls daily.
  • Sabado Art Gallery is where the local artist Philip Sabado paints, teaches workshops and sells his color-saturated impressions of Maui landscapes and hula dancers.
  • Native Intelligence offers a wealth of Hawaiian art and fashion: Locals come here for Aloha shirts and sarongs, fine jewelry and fresh flower leis.
  • Four Seasons Resort Maui sets the standard for service with poolside spritzes, immaculate housekeeping and a terrific complimentary kids’ camp. Guests can book spa treatments in oceanfront huts and outrigger canoe excursions that launch from the resort’s adjoining beach. Rooms start at $1,095 a night.
  • Hotel Wailea is an adults-only boutique hotel on a hill overlooking South Maui. While not directly on the beach, it’s only a short shuttle ride away. Elegant suites are spacious (750 square feet with kitchenettes) and the Birdcage lounge is a prime spot for toasting the sunset. Rooms start at $799.
  • Maui Kamaole is a condo complex across the street from Kama‘ole Beach Park III, between Wailea and Kihei on Maui’s south shore. One- and two-bedroom units feature full kitchens, laundry facilities and lush landscaping. Rooms start at $500.
  • Since the recent fire intensified the housing shortage, visitors should avoid short-term rentals in residential areas. Instead, book hotels that offer in-room kitchens, such as Fairmont Kea Lani or Mana Kai Maui .
  • The best way to explore the island is by car . The major rental companies each have kiosks at Kahului Airport. Taxis and ride-hailing services are available, but long distances between destinations make this an expensive option. Maui’s public transit is limited. The Maui Bus operates 12 routes, including two that stop at the airport. One-way fares cost $2; day passes are $4.

People stroll along a paved pedestrian path that is flanked with manicured grass. Palm trees grow on one side of the path, and the ocean is visible on the other.

Wailea Beach Path

The Wailea Beach Path , which meanders along the island’s southern coast, reflects Maui’s almost contradictory personas: On one side, opulent resorts flaunt swim-up bars and nightly torch-lighting ceremonies. A subtler drama unfolds on the opposite side, where native flora like honey-scented naio bushes, spiky hala trees and hibiscus blossoms flourish along the rocky shoreline. Sit and listen to the sea rush through the lava rocks as the sun drops between three islands: Lanai, Kahoolawe and tiny Molokini. In the 1970s, nine Native Hawaiians occupied Kahoolawe in defiance of the U.S. military, which had been using the island as a bombing range for decades. Their daring protest sparked what is now known as the Hawaiian Renaissance — a revival of Indigenous culture that continues today.

Head to Oao Sushi Bar & Grill in the Wailea area for beautifully prepared Japanese fare. The owner and head chef, J.R. Oao, sharpened his knife at Maui’s best sushi bars (including a stint at Nobu Lana‘i) before opening his first brick-and-mortar restaurant last year (he also has a food truck in Kihei, a few miles north). His signature rolls are balanced and inventive: Try the baked California roll ($22), served hot and loaded with shrimp and scallops. Juicy seared lamb chops rest on a smear of umami-rich red miso ($42). Even the salads impress — bright cilantro vinaigrette with a hint of horseradish enlivens a simple mix of Maui-grown greens, roasted corn and goat cheese ($16). For dessert, the ube pot de crème ($14), made from purple yam, is luscious, light and almost cartoonishly bright.

A person wearing an apron and a baseball hat holds a cocktail shaker with two hands behind a bar counter.

The name of Tikehau , a new lounge in Wailea, means “peaceful landing.” The bar, which opened in November and is quietly raising the standard for craft cocktails statewide, was true to its name for Mari Howe, its manager, and other staff who came to work here after losing jobs or homes to the Lahaina fire. Everything is thoughtfully selected, from the gold-leaf wallpaper to the crystal stemware. Garnishes are coveted souvenirs; a tiny surfboard floats atop the Thousand Peaks ($19) — a lagoon-blue Paloma topped with jasmine-tea “sea foam.” The Hawaiian Samurai ($50), a top-shelf-whiskey libation, comes with a miniature katana sword. Ms. Howe’s seasonal menu incorporates local spirits and mixers: fresh pineapple juice, Kō Hana rum and okolehao, a moonshine made from Hawaiian ti plants. Upscale snacks include poisson cru, a raw-fish dish ($25), and smoked taro hummus ($15).

Explore the rugged Kanaio Coast’s hidden coves and sea caves with a rafting tour.

A person looks the sun's rays rising over the crest of a mountain. The clouds appear below the sun, indicating the person is at a high summit.

This morning mission requires preparation. First, book a sunrise reservation at Haleakalā National Park well in advance ($1 permit, $30 park entrance). Then pack really warm clothes. In the darkness, drive slowly up the 10,000-foot volcano; fog often obscures cattle and native geese loitering in hairpin turns. Your efforts will be rewarded at the peak — first by the velvet sky awash with stars, then by the sun’s rays spilling across the fire-forged mountain. Notice how the silverswords (hedgehog-like plants that grow only here) sparkle in the golden light. As you descend, stop at Hosmer Grove , where a short hike leads to a forest full of Hawaiian honeycreepers , birds that are among some of the planet’s rarest.

Midway down Haleakalā, stop at the Upcountry Farmers Market . Every Saturday morning, the Kulamalu Town Center parking lot turns into a miniature street fair with live music and vendors offering a dizzying array of Maui-grown produce and prepared foods. You’ll find things to eat immediately — fresh coconut, vegan sweet-potato cheesecake and Venezuelan arepas — as well as things to stash in your suitcase, like passion-fruit butter and macadamia nuts. Don’t miss the ‘Oko‘a Farm Store , which migrated from the market into an adjacent storefront. The store’s 46-acre farm supplies a cornucopia of tropical fruits and vegetables; its shelves teem with jars of pickled, powdered, and freeze-dried treats and tonics.

A moving car, which is blurred in the photograph, makes its way along a two-lane road during the daytime. No buildings are visible, just trees, shrubbery and power lines.

Baldwin Avenue

Take the scenic drive back to sea level through historic Makawao and Paia towns. Bordered by a rodeo arena and a polo field , Makawao is the charming headquarters of the paniolo, Hawaiian cowboys who continue to rope and ride across the island’s lush ranchlands. On the corner of Makawao and Baldwin Avenues you’ll see T. Komoda Store and Bakery ; this beloved family-run business, which has served the community since 1916, sells out of its cream puffs and butter rolls daily. Follow Baldwin past the defunct sugar mill to Paia. Once a busy sugar plantation hub surrounded by green cane fields, it’s now home to surfers and artists. As you pass Baldwin Beach, admire the view of the rain-carved West Maui Mountains. The morning light often reveals the hidden interior of ‘Īao Valley, your next destination.

The view of a creek, with white water rushing over beds of rocks. A lush, green mountain rises in the background.

Wailuku River

Head to Kaohu Store in Wailuku for lunch to go. This mom-and-pop grocery offers the island’s best poke — raw fish mixed with traditional seasonings such as ground kukui nuts and seaweed (from $18 a pound). Add two scoops of rice and crunchy fern salad for a truly local meal. If you prefer a cooked lunch, visit Tails Up Maui for a classy fish sandwich ($19) or mochiko (rice flour) fried chicken ($17). Take your picnic to Kepaniwai Park , where model houses commemorate the diverse cultures of Hawaii’s sugar plantation era, and dip your feet into the Wailuku River. Continue to ‘ Īao Valley State Monument (out-of-state visitors need reservations; $5 entrance fee, $10 parking). Paved walkways wind through a traditional lo‘i kalo (taro patch), past multiple waterfalls and up to a stunning lookout.

Peruse the art and artifacts at Hale Hō‘ike‘ike , a captivating repository of Hawaiian culture in the former home of the missionary-artist Edward Bailey. Exhibits showcase Hawaiian feather work and quilts, carved deities, and paintings depicting 19th-century Maui. Imagine trying to paddle the legendary swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku’s redwood plank surfboard into the waves (entry, $10). From there, stroll through Wailuku, Maui’s somewhat sleepy seat of local government. Narrow side streets yield many treasures: See enormous street murals (use the online map by Small Town Big Art , a public art project), admire the color-saturated paintings at Sabado Art Gallery and find refreshment at Wailuku Coffee Co. or Esters Fair Prospect , a cocktail bar. After shopping for Hawaiian books and clothing at Native Intelligence , buy yourself a fragrant flower lei to wear for the duration of your trip.

Two people sit on a red-painted wooden bench in a restaurant dining on a variety of dishes.

At Balai Pata , a new Filipino restaurant in Kahului, a celebration of the flavors that the chef and owner Joey Macadangdang grew up with is a welcome addition to Maui’s restaurant scene. Plump Kauai prawns sauteed in garlicky fish sauce ($17) set the stage for savory sinigang ($30) — tamarind broth loaded with long beans, okra and fish. For dessert, two can share the halo-halo ($18) — crushed ice topped with avocado, ube ice cream, coconut cream and fruit jellies, served in a coconut shell. The décor reflects a bright, homespun aesthetic, and once a month, local families fill the restaurant for late-night happy hour and karaoke battles — check Instagram for dates.

A child jumps from a rock into a small natural pool during the daytime.

A shirtless person wearing shorts sits on the side of an inflatable raft that is floating in the water during the daytime.

Blue Water Rafting

A trip to Maui isn’t complete without ducking underwater to spy on clouds of striped manini fish, eagle rays and turtles. While most snorkel tours start at Mā‘alaea Harbor, Blue Water Rafting boards at the Kihei boat ramp — offering easier access and one of the only tours of Kanaio Coast’s hidden coves and sea caves ($179, four hours). Climb into the rigid-hulled raft beside two dozen other passengers (fewer than the big tour boats) and watch for dolphins. In winter, close encounters with whales are common. As you peer into the pristine bay formed by Maui’s youngest lava flow, imagine the Polynesian wayfinders sailing here centuries ago, followed by the French explorer La Pérouse in 1786. The ride is exhilarating but bumpy.

Don’t be shy: Wear your flower lei to lunch at Mama’s Fish House . Old-style hospitality reigns at this celebrated restaurant on a sheltered lagoon. Servers greet you in vintage Aloha wear and offer complimentary bowls of poi (pounded taro — a staple of the traditional Hawaiian diet). The menu is pricey but worthy; long before it was fashionable, Mama’s listed who caught each fish and where. A recent menu featured sea bass hooked by Ivan Ventura in Hana ($68). If you ordered only dessert, you’d still leave happy; the Polynesian Black Pearl ($24) is an edible version of “The Birth of Venus”: chocolate mousse and passion fruit ensconced in a cookie seashell. Tables can book up a year out. After lunch, drive two minutes east to Ho‘okipa Beach Park , where surfers carve waves and sea turtles bask on the sand.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Dear Zolbergs, Thank you for your review! We will be happy to welcome you back again! Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

My husband and I took the boat trip from the Radisson Hotel (previously the Hotel Ukraine). We struggled to book tickets on their website as it is confusing so we went to their offices on the Moskva River and bought the tickets the day before. If you don’t book in advance the tickets are usually sold out so it’s best to book in advance to avoid disappointment. We had spectacular weather and the two and a half hour cruise on the river was outstanding. We chose to sit upstairs outdoors and could order drinks and watch the beautiful Moscow sights in style. It is a perfect photo opportunity and you certainly get an excellent tour of Moscow and a general idea about the layout of the city. Do this tour if you can. It’s not expensive and it’s a lovely way to unwind as well.

Do not go on cruise !!!! Is a big lie !!!!!! Misery and poverty. Dirty meals, dirty dishes, unskilled employees. Avoid this cruise company!!!!!

Dear monica1205, We were very upset to learn that you did not like your boat tour. Can you tell us the name of the boat? Kindly ask you to contact with us by e-mail and send your ticket. This will help us to understand this situation in detail and solve it. We hope to be able to welcome you back with us to have a chance to change your impressions! Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

the tour can be for one or two hours. there are several stops, but you can't do a drop on drop off trip. try to get a tour which has either an English guide or at least audio commentary otherwise difficult to appreciate all the sights. you can bargain and get a discount for sure as there are many tour operators

Dear Tejas P, Thank you for your review! We will be happy to welcome you back on our boat tours. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

We went to the university of Moscow and wanted to take the boat back. There was a guy standing on the entrance to take the boat selling tickets so we told him we were buying online. He then proceeded to harass us and say no one will accept the tickets inside the boat because they don’t have scanners. We called the number on the site and they said to just avoid the guy but he was standing on our way yelling at us. The boat arrives and he’s talking to the crew not letting us get info because they didn’t speak English. We took the metro and went to the first stop where they have reps and it was all cool. The boat ride is okay. Good at 400 rubbles but I wouldn’t pay 900 from the hustlers. They check your tickets inside, you just walk in and inside they verified our tickets

Dear Francisco J, Thank you for your feedback! It help us to become better! We are so sorry about this case and we are really very ashamed of this person, whom you had to face. You were right to contact with us by phone and we also can speack with boat manager. We are hope to welcome you back to have a chanse to change your impressons. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

Terrible restaurant service . Manager Elena was rude . We asked for kir royal - it was not available. When we asked for a bottle of Prosecco and nicely asked for a discount , she started to argue “what else do you want , we are not in the market , we had a full ship, don’t complain we don’t have some drinks “ :))) we were surprised . Waiting time for a bottle of Prosecco was ~30 mins. You can have way better service on different company ship.

Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

day boat trips maui

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

day boat trips maui

From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Direct to Suzdal

Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

Suzdal

The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.

Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.
