8 Best Hikes in Montenegro That Should Be On Your List

One of the best things to do in Montenegro is to go hiking. Still, many people who visit Montenegro mainly head to Kotor , Budva, sometimes Tivat and Herceg Novi , missing all the beauty that lies inside the country. These places are amazing, yet hikes in Montenegro offer a glimpse of nature’s treasures in this region of the Balkans.

There are hundreds of various trails to explore. Some are great for hiking while others offer walking . Mark and I went on many hikes and walks during the time we lived in Budva and today I would love to share a list of some of my favorite trails. They suit anyone who is visiting the country for the first time and who is not a professional hiker.

So why not rent a car in Montenegro and go on a drive for a little hiking adventure?

When is the Best Time to Go Hiking in Montenegro?

The climate of Montenegro is strikingly different on the coast and in the mountains. While it stays warm for a longer period of time on the coast, the north of the country starts seeing snow early.

Winter in Montenegro mountainous regions often lasts for more than six months and that is from late October to May, sometimes mid-June. Anywhere near the coast, the weather stays pleasant and good for hiking or walking from April until November.

If you plan to include trekking into your Montenegro itinerary and would love to go to one of the national parks, then the best time to travel to this country would be late summer and early fall. In any other case, if planning to do just short day hikes anywhere near the coast, April through June, September and October are the best months for that.

Early fall is the best season for long-distance hiking in Montenegro mountains. During this time, all the trails are easily accessible, the Tara River is ideal for rafting, and the temperature is perfectly warm. At the same time, if you wish to hit the beach, the sun will shine every day and the sea will be warming up to a comfortable plus 25C.

Spring, when everything blooms, is also a very nice season to go on hikes. But going on long hikes or walks in the mountains will be more challenging since there will be still snow in many places and frequent rains can ruin the entire experience.

Well, it can also easily rain with a thunderstorm in June, July, and even August. So you may want to pack a raincoat or poncho just in case if traveling to the mountains of Montenegro in summer.

And here my list of some spectacular hikes in Montenegro that you have to try:

Best Day Hikes in Montenegro

1. hike in kotor to sveti ivan fortress.

hikes in Montenegro

This is probably one of the most famous hikes in Montenegro which you can do in one (or half) day without leaving Kotor city. It is famous because of Sveti Ivan fortress from where you get stunning views of Kotor Bay. Many resources mention a walking trail to Sveti Ivan as one of the best hikes in the Kotor area. While I personally don’t think it is the best, I am convinced it is truly spectacular and you shouldn’t miss it.

Most people who reach the top of Sveti Ivan usually get there by taking a road from Old Kotor and paying 8 euros per person for the entrance.

Instead (especially if you are on a budget), I recommend going to the Northern part of Kotor to start this hike for free and with only a few people on the trail.

Besides that fact that it’s free and less crowded (if crowded at all), it also opens a beautiful panorama of the city and bay area. The hike is a bit steep and may be challenging for little kids and elder people. If you are used to hiking and walking a lot, you’ll get to the top pretty quickly. If not, just make stops and take it slower.

Once you step on a trail, you’ll start noticing a beautiful view of the city. The higher you go, the more spectacular view will be opening up.

hiking in Kotor

For directions: this hike starts near Apartments Ana and zigzags for almost two kilometers up to the top. The trailhead starts here .

What to know: much of this Montenegro hike is in open sunlight, so it can get incredibly hot in summer. Have plenty of water with you, sunscreen, and a hat. On the way back you can take Old Town road which is known as the ladder of Kotor and exit through the gate where others pay to enter.

We’ve done this hike a few times and hiked adjacent trails and I still believe that the best way to hike it is in the direction that I described above. If you start by the main entrance and climb the ladder of Kotor, you’ll need to turn around all the time to see the view. Besides that, the ladder is steeper and going up there will be more strenuous than on the trail that starts in the north.

Note : Those who would like to turn this day hike into a long-distance trek around Kotor should just follow the Old Kotor Fort trail towards Njegusi. From there you can take a cab or local bus to return to Kotor if you don’t feel like hiking back.

MY FAVORITE PLACES WHERE TO STAY IN KOTOR:

Kotor is a small town that flows smoothly into the neighboring town of Dobrota. There are several small towns on the coast nearby Kotor and lots of options to choose from.

Depending on the type of vacation and your budget you can find either a villa on the coast with a pool or private beach (most often a concrete platform), an apartment, a hotel room, a room in a guest house or a bed in a hostel.

If you are planning to spend only one night in Kotor, I would recommend looking into accommodation near the sea line in Dobrota. In this case, you will be waking up to an incredible view of the fjords in one of the most peaceful and gorgeous spots in Montenegro. Here are my personal top picks:

HOTEL VILLA DUOMO: a very good option if you’re looking for a reliable and comfortable hotel that is well-located in Old Town of Kotor. There are different types of rooms available and there is a free breakfast included in the rate.

PALAZZO RADOMIRI HERITAGE HOTEL: a historic 18th-century old hotel in an excellent location with absolutely unbeatable views. It features spacious rooms with a modern design, a gym, outdoor pool, sauna, stunning views of Kotor Bay, and even yoga classes. Come to spend some quality time and get full relaxation.

STUDIOS BELVI APARTMENT: if you are looking to stay inside the walls of Old Town of Kotor, this is one of the nicest apartments to choose! It has everything you may need for a comfortable stay and offers great value for money.

ASTORIA HOTEL: another beautiful historic accommodation in Old Town. It has a very unique interior and decor, clean rooms with large beds, and the best location. The hotel, although looks like it was built in a cave, has modern furniture and bathrooms.

For more information on where to stay in Kotor and other cities in Montenegro, check my guide to where to stay in Montenegro .

2. Hiking in Montenegro Kotor Bay to an Abandoned Village of Gornji Stoliv

long-distance hiking Montenegro

For a more unique hike in Kotor area take a look at the Vrmac hill, famous for mountain villages, fortresses and a lot of trails. Vrmac hill is a mountain peak with sweeping views on the Vrmac peninsula. And Vrmac peninsula is that part of Kotor Bay where besides Tivat there are some beautiful towns such as Donji Stoliv, Muo, and Lepetai.

One of the short day hikes on Vrmac hill is a hike to the abandoned village of Gornji Stoliv. There, you’ll see a gorgeous panorama of Perast with Our Lady of the Rocks and Saint George islands. Do not forget to grab a bottle of water and snacks since you’ll want to replenish the calories spent on climbing a hill with a height of 240 m.

What to know: The town of Stoliv is divided into two parts – Gornji (Upper) and Donji (Lower) Stoliv. About 350 people live near the sea coast in Donja Stoliv where there is a decent number of restaurants, a post office, and a few guest houses for tourists.

But after half an hour of walking up the hill, you can get from Donji Stoliv into a completely “different world” of Gornji Stoliv, the world of the recent past which will never return. This abandoned settlement is 8 km away from Kotor and Tivat.

day hikes in Montenegro

If half a century ago, 64 people lived in Gornji (Upper) Stoliv, in our time, there is only 1 house. The reason for this was the catastrophic earthquake of 1979, the Yugoslav war with the economic crisis, and the development of tourism in the 21st century. Besides this house, there is also a church of St. Anne with a beautiful panoramic platform next to it, an abandoned grocery store, olive oil mills and bakeries.

The bell tower of the church is visible from Perast or from the bay, so it will be interesting to visit it, especially if you’ve seen it from the other side. You cannot enter the territory of the church through the gate, but you can climb through the hole in the fence on the left. After the church, you can continue hiking to Gornja Lastva for more panoramic views.

For directions: The trailhead starts here , in Donji Stoliv near the sea. You’ll see a red mark on the wall of one of the houses pointing where to go. The walk to the church takes around 30 – 40 minutes. But in spring it can be slippery because of the humidity after the rain and may take more time.

Here is the beginning of another trail that is less popular and not so slippery. If you wish you can also start a hike here near the old church which is located next to Our Lady Temple.

If you go to Gornja Lastva then on the way back take a Blue Line bus that runs along the coast in Donji Stoliv. It travels from Kotor to Tivat and back, so you can go in any direction. And here are the coordinates where to start if you start hiking this trail in Gornja Lastva.

WHERE TO STAY NEARBY:

If budget allows, treat yourself to a stay in a new luxury hotel in the village outside Kotor – Blue Kotor Bay Premium Spa Resort . It is next to the trail and to the Bay of Kotor in a very secluded area.

3. Hiking Wolf Trail Near Cetinje in Lovcen National Park

We found out about this beautiful hike by accident when were visiting Lovcen National Park.

While being on the way to Mausoleum, we decided to stop in a small village Ivanova Korita to get a snack and walk around. There, we found many trails that start right in the village and go through the park. During the time we lived in Montenegro we hiked most of them but our favorite turned out to be a Wolf Trail.

Lovcen National Park hiking

There was something magical about this hike. Perhaps because we visited in fall when the forest looked very dreamlike or maybe the reason was in the number of vistas and spectacular views.

Views you get on a trail are breathtaking. You can see the mountains, Tivat, sea and on a good day even Kotor Bay in a distance. My favorite part is that it is a loop and you don’t have to walk the same path twice. The scenery is changing multiple times throughout the hike – you walk through the valley, forest, village, and rocky hills.

Follow my guide to hiking in Lovcen National Park where I talk in detail about this hike and a few other beautiful trails.

WHERE TO STAY IN LOVCEN NATIONAL PARK:

Lovcen National Park is conveniently located not far from Budva, Cetinje, and Kotor. It can be always a one-day trip if you are staying in one of those cities. However, if you decide to stay overnight in a park, there are only a few nice options to choose from – Hotel Monte Rosa and Ivanov Konak hotel .

hikes in Montenegro

If you are visiting Montenegro on a vacation, it doesn’t probably make much sense to stay overnight in Lovcen. There are so many unique and romantic accommodation options in Kotor and nearby Njegusi village that you’d want to experience them.

Njegusi village builds up very quickly, with more and more hotels popping up. One of the newer projects is Ethno Village St. George hotel with apartment-style rooms, outdoor pool, big territory, and restaurant with incredibly delicious food.

For budget options, I recommend looking into Cetinje . This city is way cheaper than Budva or Kotor.

4. Curevac Hike in Durmitor National Park

It is one of the northernmost hikes in Durmitor National Park which brings you to the top of Tara canyon. On this hike, you get a view of the second largest canyon (after Grand Canyon) in the world.

hikes in Montenegro

The path is well-marked and clear, but it is a bit steep and rocky. It may be challenging for small kids and elder people.

This hike is short and can be completed within 1.5-2 hours.

I recommend going either during the first part of the day or before the sunset. Going in the morning means that the sun will shine right on the canyon and you’ll get a clear view and take good pictures. We went for the sunset and the sun rays were getting right into our eyes making it difficult to see all the beauty of the canyon.

I have a full guide to Durmitor National Park hiking , where besides this trail I mention other amazing trails. So you can add them to your Montenegro itinerary.

Curevac hiking trail

5. Savin Kuk Hike in Durmitor National Park

Everyone, who goes to Durmitor National Park, hears about Black Lake. In fact, local tour agencies, when introducing visitors to Durmitor park, usually bring them to Black Lake. So it is easy to find lots of information on hikes around the lake and nearby forest.

Savin Kuk hike is not anywhere near the lake but if you go all the way to the end of this trail you’ll get a stunning view of the Black Lake from above.

Savin Kuk hike

This hike is very strenuous if you decide to do it without a chairlift.

When we were there in October the skylift was closed for the season, so we decided to give it a try and hike all the way to the top wearing just sneakers and jeans. We were not thinking on that day, you know. And oh my gosh, how challenging it was. We hiked almost 3 kilometers one way (2 miles) with an elevation gain of more than 2 km (7K feet.) Crazy us!

hikes in Durmitor park

But we’ve done it.

hiking tour montenegro

What to know: It gets incredibly windy and cold on the top of the mountain. You may need to have a jacket with a hood even during the summer.

travel tips for hiking in Montenegro

In order to reach this trail, you need to have a car. It starts near the restaurant KOLIBA in Virak ( coordinates here ) and takes approximately 10 minutes to drive from Zabljak.

WHERE TO STAY IN DURMITOR:

The best place to stay would be in Zabljak town. Mark and I have stayed there in two different hotels and Airbnb apartments. Each of them was good in its own way. Read this post to find out details. All the information on the best accommodation is all the way in the end.

Does my content help you plan your trip? If yes, I’ll appreciate a cup of coffee from you, so I could produce more free guides and itineraries!

6. Hike in Central Montenegro to Kapetanovo Lake in Moraca Mountains

If previously mentioned treks are more or less known among some travelers, this hike in Montenegro is a true gem that no one knows about. Kapetanovo lake is located right in the center of the country, between Kolasin and Niksic. Not many people know about this place, that’s why it’s still one of the least visited and discovered gems in Montenegro.

In my opinion, this lake and surrounding nature look very similar to some scenery in Norway . In general, I believe many places in Montenegro look like some places in Norway , just in miniature.

best hiking in Montenegro

To get to Kapetanovo lake you either have to hike around 5 km (3 miles) one way from the end of the paved road or go there by jeep.

In the summertime, you can camp, stay overnight, go on other hikes, picnic and even dine at one of the local diners. Also, in summer flocks of sheep and cows graze near the lake making it look a bit fairytalish. In winter, everything is closed and looks abandoned.

If you would like to hike a bit more, check another lake in the area – Manito lake . It would take around 40 minutes one way to get there.

The best way to get to Kapetanovo lake is through Niksic. But keep in mind that at some point the asphalt road ends and from there you need to hike (unless you come by jeep.)

What to know:  In winter, the weather is usually cold and very windy, so perhaps hiring a jeep would work better. In summer, when nearby Niksic is baking hot, Moraca mountains experience lower temperatures.

WHERE TO STAY:

A trip to Kapitanovo lake can be done during one day from Kotor or Budva, or if being on the way from/to Durmitor National Park to/from the coast.

I wouldn’t recommend staying overnight in Niksic because there is not really much to do in this city (except for eating and drinking in a few restaurants) and to me personally, some parts of this city look somewhat depressing. It’s informative to visit and spend a bit of time but I wouldn’t recommend staying overnight. However, it’s up to you.

My picks would be to camp near the lake (if you are a camper,)  stay in Savnik  or combine with a trip to Zabljak.

In Savnik, I personally can recommend Eco Selo Nevidio . Even if you don’t get to stay here, stop for lunch or coffee at their village-like restaurant with a lovely view.

7. Trek to the Mountainous Lakes – Stabansko Lakes

If you will be in the area of Piva Lake near the Durmitor National park, I recommend you to devote one day to a hike to two small but beautiful lakes at the foot of the Volujak mountain, located on the border with Bosnia & Herzegovina.

The difficulty of this hike is average. In some parts of the forest the trail goes up 45 degrees and since it’s covered with a lot of leaves, it can be easy enough to go astray. Although red marks on tree trunks and stones will not let you lose your way.

Most of the trail runs in the shade of trees in a deciduous forest. There are no people on this path since no one really knows about this beauty. The lakes are small and not promoted as much as nearby Black Lake in Durmitor. Introverts will definitely love it there.

Best Montenegro hiking

We hiked in the summer and didn’t see any wild animals or snakes. There were also no mosquitoes, just some ticks, so watch out for them.

After the hike, if you are tired and would like to swim in icy water, go down to the Vrbnica river. Leave your car behind the bridge and on the left side ( here ) you will see the path upstream to the beach.

For directions : I am dropping coordinates below to make it easier for you to understand where to start this hike.

hiking trails in Montenegro

Drive all the way here to park your vehicle in the shade of trees near the sign ‘Piva Nature Park’. Once you turn from the main road, the rest of the road will be gravel but it is in good condition, so driving a small sedan car is not a problem. Once you park the car, start your hike towards a small lake ( here ) and then a few more minutes towards a big Stabansko lake ( here ).

The hike one way takes around 2 hours to go from the parking place to the first small lake.

Note : If you prefer to go with a guide, contact the office of the Piva Nature Park and they will arrange a tour for you.

WHERE TO STAY IN THE AREA:

The area near Stabansko lakes is breathtaking. If you are not in a hurry to return to Budva beaches , pause for a night in a small town Pluzine, situated on picturesque Piva Lake. And one of (my favorite) places where to stay there is BB Konak .

This mini-hotel consists of bungalows by the lake that have their own entrance to the water and includes breakfast in the morning. There is also a beach nearby where to swim, rent out paddleboards or kayaks, and do boat trips on Lake Piva.

8. Hike to Gate of Wishes and Old Military Road in Mrtvica Canyon

The most fabulous canyon in Montenegro is the Mrtvica River and you definitely have to hike to see it. There are no roads, just a trail here, so you will be left alone with the seething mountain river and local jungle. It is incredibly beautiful, without any big climbs, and easy to access. Perhaps you’ve seen photos of this canyon on the Internet.

Mrtvica canyon hike

The road from Budva to the Mrtvica Canyon runs through Podgorica. There is nothing to see on the way, except for the local ‘Niagara Falls’ or Crnojevicha River with its famous panorama. On the way back you can stop at the “Pechenyara” restaurant for meat from a sacha or carp.

On the way to the canyon, you will also pass the beautiful and formidable canyon of the Moraca River with a couple of panoramic platforms and a suspension bridge that will tickle your nerves.

I have read a few guides about Mrtvica Canyon hike in Montenegro but it seems not many people still do it. During all six hours that we spent trekking, we met only a few other hikers that seemed to be locals. Overall the trail was empty and quiet.

On this hike, you pass the village, cross a few bridges, walk along the crystal clear river, forest and hike through the deep canyon. Once you are in the forest, there are not any signs pointing to the Gate of Wishes. So you need to make sure you don’t pass a side path that leads to it. There is only one side path on your left if you are hiking from the trailhead. Just don’t miss it. We almost did because were busy talking.

This trailhead starts in Medjurecje village, where you leave your car (we parked our car near Danilov bridge here ), and has lots of signs. Partially it can be done as a loop and is rather long (around 15 km.) It is great for long-distance hiking in Montenegro that suits almost anyone.

In case you don’t feel like covering all this stretch, just turn back after you visit Gate of Wishes.

Montenegro hiking

If you plan to explore more than just the Bay of Kotor and the coast of Montenegro, do not miss this hike. You will be definitely amazed.

For accommodation, I recommend staying in Kolasin. Check availability and rates here .

I love hiking and these hikes look phenomenal! I love that you have hikes that overlook the city and then also ones that weave through a forest surrounded by fall foliage. They all look unique and interesting in their own way. Loved this blog post!

Thanks, Martha!

That alternative hike to Sveti Ivan Fortress sounds like a great way to avoid the crowds! And for that breathtaking view, I’d suffer a bit of uphill climbing 🙂

We did too, but the climb was not bad at all!

We are obsessed with hiking!!! I love this post. We have not yet visited Montenegro, but I would really love to. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for your comment, Bea. If you get to visit, you won’t be disappointed, I promise!

I second your thoughts on Norway. In fact, after I visited Kotor, I was surprised to learn that its bay is technically a fjord itself! I have only been to Kotor, and I remember loving every single moment of that short trip (it was a stop on a longer Balkan itinerary). I would defiitely love to go back to Montenegro and get to see a bit more. Thank you for the inspiration!

I am glad to know I am not the only one who believes that Montenegro reminds Norway, even if a little bit 🙂 I think visiting once during a short trip is never enough!

A very awe-inspiring post on the natural wonder of this little country on the Balkans. I do not personally hike but I love reading posts like yours as, thanks to your beautiful pics, I can discover more of enchanting paths and sceneries.

I hear you, Federica. I am a fan of reading posts about experiences and adventures in something that I personally don’t do. Thank you for stopping by and dropping your comment.

These look like some incredibly picturesque hikes! I’m not much of a hiker, so I’d probably have to miss out on these, but dang they sure are pretty!

Thanks, Brianna. They are indeed!

Breathtakingly beautiful. A good friend grew up in Montenegro and she is always telling me I’d love it there. You’re post has just totally proven her right. Desperate to go!

I am sure you’ll love it, Jenny. There is so much to do and see in this tiny country!

Beautiful photos!! These are the kinds of views that make hiking worth it! It seems like you had many incredible viewpoints!

We truly did and honestly, there are so many other shorter and less tried trails all over the country!

You just had me hooked at the first photo. Montenegro looks stunning and I LOVE hiking. The views of the mountains and into the city are simply gorgeous.

I had not really considered Montenegro for a holiday, but now I know how many amazing hikes there are, we might just have to visit! <3

And you won’t be disappointed, Josy!

Hi! Thank you for all of your posts. They are so detailed and informative and such a great help.

I am wondering what your thoughts are on living in Montenegro (Kotor) as a single female (mid 30s). I’d like to know more about the culture, way of life and general disposition of the people there. What types of interactions & lifestyle could I expect to have there and what other Balkan areas do you recommend considering in my search?

About Me: – digitally employed with a reasonable budget, but looking to live comfortably below it in order to add to savings/retirement and travel surrounding areas. – don’t need fancy a living space with top end ammenities to be happy – high speed RELIABLE internet connection is an absolute must. -Looking for a laid back yet still vibrant environment/community – love being surrounded by dynamic landscapes – especially ones that are mountainous & varied – prefer a moderate/cooler environment & don’t mind extended periods of cloud and rain -a place where I can walk, bike or motorbike for daily needs – adequate amenities, restaurants and bars but not a nightclub or party scene environment.

I am open to options and am looking to narrow down to maybe 3 or 4 areas to explore on my preliminary travels.

I really appreciate your time and any suggestions you may have to offer. Thank you!

Your pictures are so dreamy I really want to dive into them. I am loving all the options. It must have been an amazing feeling seeing it all.

It truly was, thank you for your kind words, Farah!

I’ll be moving to Montenegro soon from the United States for work. I love hiking but since I am moving by myself, I was wondering you consider the hikes to be safe for solo trips (especially considering I am a young woman)?

Hi Michelle, thank you for your question and I apologize for responding with a delay. Hiking in Montenegro (as traveling in general) as a solo traveler is very safe, although I personally wouldn’t recommend going by yourself on very long and intense hikes. All trails have markings and signs but a lot of them are very isolated, not many people go there and cellular connection is non-existent. On almost every hike I mention in this and other posts, we saw at least one solo hiker, including a female. I hope that helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

Dear Anya, As an Ukrainan-American I assume you are still a foreigner in this country and the first rule in foreign countries is to show respect. It is very much ok that you share with other people nice spots and ideas for hiking tours which you liked, but if you don’t like, better just don’t mention. Niksic is a pleasant city with nice people who are happy to live there and are not going depressed. And the climate is much better than in Podgorica. Regards

Dear Stephane,

So, first of all, as Ukrainian-American (as you emphasize it,) on my blog I am writing whatever I want, whenever I want and however I want it. This is a place where I share both positive and negative experiences, including what I liked and what I didn’t. I am producing articles that show two sides of a place, not just a sugary-vanilla one. And as a professional travel blogger and journalist, I will be always mentioning places and tours that I didn’t like personally, explaining why exactly I didn’t like them. Those are my own points of view but my readers decide for themselves which decisions to make. If you personally don’t enjoy reading my post(s), just exit. You are only one click away from leaving my blog.

But coming and telling me that “It is very much ok that you share with other people nice spots and tours which you liked, but if you don’t like, better just don’t mention” does not make much sense. No, it is NOT ok to speak only about good bright experiences. And it is definitely NOT ok for you to try to shut another person up and make her/him quiet about what he/she doesn’t like. Just because you personally don’t like hearing something, it does not imply that other people should not be talking about it. If you don’t agree with my point of view, so express it and give clear reasons to support your opinion. Don’t come and basically tell me to shut up. While being disrespectful yourself you are trying to teach me lessons on a definition of respect.

Second of all, speaking of respect. Me, sharing how I feel about the tour or a place, does not have anything to do with how respectful I actually am at that particular place. During the time my husband and I lived in Montenegro, we were always respectful of local culture, people and their way of living. Today, saying that I find Niksic boring, it looks depressing and I do not recommend staying there overnight does not have anything to do with me not respecting people who live in this city. Just use common sense when making conclusions.

And third of all, Stephane, if there are people in this world who don’t share your opinion about the place or city, that’s not a big of a deal. We are all different and like different things. Sorry if you feel offended when I say Niksic looks depressing. To me, it does indeed. I am sure people who live there are nice and happy to live there. Although, one of my friends who comes from Niksic but lives in London, feels the same way about her hometown as I feel. Not everyone is liking what you like. Nowhere in my post though, I mention anything about people and nowhere in my post I speak disrespectfully of something or someone. I am solely talking about the city and what it can give a traveler who comes on vacation.

Again, if you have something valid to share on why Niksic is worth visiting for a few days, please do, just in a meaningful way.

love your posts and your reply to Stephane in 2019 when he basically told you to keep your negative opinions to yourself as they are disrespectful! Not trying to tell you what to do, but: Please keep on being you and sharing honestly! thank you so much!!

Randy, thank you so much for a dose of encouragement 🙂 I really appreciate it!!!

Thanks Anya for all your great suggestions for our trip to Montenegro! We also did the alternative direction up to Sveti Ivan Fortress which worked out great. Parking was challenging at the trailhead so we ended up paying near the supermarket, totally worth it. The next day we found a trail on the opposite side of the harbor called Pjesacka staza Vrmac. There is an abandoned fort at the top and you can see Tivat with all the super yachts and a bit of the Adriatic. Easy footing with a lot of switchbacks. The trail kind of walks you through the back of peoples yards in the beginning to get there. We went in the end of May and the wildflowers were blooming everywhere. We also had time to Visit Luvcen for 2 days which is also spectacular and we had it mostly to ourselves. Our 6 day road trip was too short but we packed a lot in. We stopped at several towns and found all sort of interesting museums and historical monuments. Cetinje has a fabulous museum and is totally worth visiting. Again thanks for all your great suggestions!!! And yes getting back over the border to Croatia took several hours even though there were only 30 cars in front of us. Traffic in Dubrovnik was like getting out of Manhattan on a Friday night in August. Just made it our sailboat connection. Susan and Nick

Hey guys, yay, I am so happy to hear that!

I am so glad I was able to help a little bit with planning your holiday! And really appreciate you finding time to write this message and share about your experience!!! 🙂

I can only imagine how packed it is during the summer months if it was that busy in the end of May. Thank you again for sharing!

This post is incredibly helpful! Thank you for all the information. I am thinking of visiting in mid-October of this year and was wondering if many of these hikes/areas will be open during this time of year other than the lift up to the top? (I will avoid that hike at this time of year). I understand October is the beginning of offseason, hence the reason I would like to visit then along with seeing what is available to see at this time of year. Thanks for all the information! I will definitely be using this as a useful tool!

Cheers, John

Hi John! I have no idea how I missed this comment, so I am responding just now. Apologize for the delay! I assume you are on the way to Montenegro now and I am wishing you to have a fabulous time! October is a fantastic month for visiting this country, especially if you plan to go to the mountains. Speaking of hikes, those on this list in Durmitor national park along the Sedlo pass can be challenging to reach now. They are on a higher elevation and it has already started to snow there. Other hikes are open and easy to do and in October the scenery around them is gorgeous! I am sure you’ll enjoy them, have a wonderful time in Montenegro!

One thing people don’t say about hiking in Montenegro is that there is trash everywhere. Every single parking pull out I have stopped at in the most beautiful places is a place where people tip trash. It’s a beautiful country for sure, but be prepared for ugly scenes of trash everywhere.

I would like to send you a very big THANK YOU for your blog posts. They really guided us on our 10-day road trip through Montenegro. We went on 4 of the hikes in this post (Kotor Fortress via the secret backway, the abandoned village of Gornji Stoliv, Wolf’s Trail in Lovcen, and the Gate of Wishes in Mrtvica canyon) and we absolutely adored every single one of them. We also went on 2 of the hikes in your Durmitor post (Zminje lake and Jablan lake) and a couple of Majestic Hidden Places (Karuc village, Radenovici church, Bjelasica Mountains and Piva Lake canyon). I think it’s safe to say that without the information and inspiration of your blogposts, it would’ve been a very different trip, and we probably would’ve missed some of these fantastic experiences.

Some updated information we gathered from our hikes:

In Kotor Fortress, the window which you need to crawl through, now has a small wooden ladder, and a sign saying entrance is forbidden. But there were no guards when we visited. It’s best to start the hike as early as possible in summer, as the trail enjoys shadow during the morning.

For the hike in Mrtvica canyon, most people park their car in the village or close to the main road. However, this means that you’ll spend the first part of the hike on a road, and not in the actual canyon itself, which can only be accessed on foot. Our accommodation host advised us to drive as far as possible on the road, and to park the car near some houses at the end of the road, where the trail starts (42°43′49.67″N 19°20′45.88″E, use maps.me app to get there). This will allow you to have as much time as possible in the actual canyon and reach deeper into it, rather than spend your energy walking on the road, which can get very hot in summer (the canyon is a little cooler). The road is macadam and a bit bumpy, but we managed just fine with a small rental car. A lady charges a hefty fee to park your car in her garden (5€ when we visited) but you can opt to leave your car on the side of the road before you reach the house. After you visit the Gate of Wishes, about 2km further up the trail, there is another very cool place of interest called Mrtvičke Grede (42°44′35.63″N 19°19′25.33″E). It was made by the army and is definitely worth seeing. In summer, at various places along the trail, you can swim in the very cold but very refreshing water. Please note that it’s not possible anymore to do a loop, as the bridge near Ban-Lug isn’t there anymore. This hike was our favorite hike of the holiday, it was so incredibly beautiful!

In Bjelasica mountains, we found it quite hard to get good information on hikes. Apart from the classic 3.4km around the Biogradska lake and some rather long one way trails, we didn’t find much. Eventually we went on a 16.5km circular hike in Mojkovac which we found in the outdooractive app, which was nice but not superb. If you have any recommendations on hiking in this area, we look forward to returning there one day!

Once again thank you so much Anya, thanks to you we made some unforgettable hikes, and completely fell in love with Montenegro!

I am so happy to hear that, Sophie! And thank you for stopping by to share your feedback and actually add so much valuable information to this article! It will be definitely useful to others who stop by to read it. I plan to return to Montenegro soon, so will be adding new hikes for sure, although next time I plan to go to the Prokletije National Park which also has incredible unexplored trails.

Whatever your preferences and skill level may be, Montenegro is sure to have a thrilling hike for you!

Camp in Lukavica Atanackovic Montenegro

Montenegro's most famous hiking trails

Some prestigious hiking spots include the Kotor walls and the Sveti Ivan fortress, which offers a famous view of the Bay of Kotor, Ivan's river bed and Njegoš's mausoleum on Lovčen, Savin Kuk on Durmitor and Crno Jezero (Black Lake.) If you are looking for something a little more secluded, take a walk through the almost surreal valley of Lukavica to Kapetanov Lake, then pass the Mrtvica Canyon and the Gate of Wishes. You can also visit the heart-shaped Trnovačko Lake, and Orjen on a full moon night.

Hiking Orjen Montenegro

Mountaineering transversals are ideal for your hiking tour: PPT "Orjen - Lovćen - Rumija" and CT-1 "Planinama Crne Gore " are part of the national network of extensive groomed trails.

The Montenegrin Alps - the mountain massif of Prokletije, where the challenging trail "Peaks of the Balkans" awaits you, as well as the world-famous mountaineering and hiking route "Via Dinarica" - White Trail - will challenge you to conquer both heights and your own fears during your adventure.

Hiking is best from mid-April to the end of October along the coast, and from June to the end of October in the mountain massifs of Magli, Durmitor, Komovi, Visitor, Hajla, and Prokletije.

Hiking at night using flashlights near the ski centers on Bjelasica adds to the thrill. Renting equipment is possible at a local tourist organization or at ski resorts.

Which mountains are the most popular for trekking?

Bjelasica and Sinjajevina stand out among Montenegrin trekking destinations. They are suitable for all ages and should be visited between May and the end of October for traditional trekking. They are also ideal for snowshoeing and ski touring in the winter. If your Montenegro journey happens in the winter, these breathtaking mountains may be the perfect spots for you!

Durmitor Trekking Adventure

Durmitor National Park is best visited during the months of July, August, and September. Trekking takes place primarily in the vicinity of Žabljak and on the National Park's lakes.

We recommend the "Durmitor Ring" and the Ćurevac viewpoint for trekking and panoramic tours. These routes necessitate substantial physical fitness and stamina, as well as hiking in organized groups rather than solo.

Explore Prokletije

If you want to explore Prokletije, you can begin in the quiet town Plav, where most tours begin. Summer is the best time to go trekking, but even then, you might have a surprise run-in with some snow! Easy hiking trails can be found in Grebaja, near Gusinje, Plavsko Lake, and on the stretch from Babino Polje to Hridsko Lake.

The nature of Prokletije in the Plav and Gusinje municipalities will delight you with all of its options. Which of the 77 peaks with elevations greater than 2,000 meters above sea level will you choose? Or perhaps one of the three peaks that rise more than 2500 meters above sea level? It's up to you to choose.

Durmitor and Prokletije trekking tours are among the most demanding. The group tour organizers provide overnight stays, licensed guides, transportation during the arrangement, free parking, and a recording of the adventure. Fill your backpack with memories and enjoy a trekking adventure in Montenegro!

Treking avanture Prokletije Ropojana Montenegro

Going to the mountain in organized groups with a certified and licensed mountain guide is the safest option!

A list of certified and licensed mountain guides can be found on the Mountaineering Association of Montenegro's website. Hiking and trekking require adequate equipment, including proper footwear, layered clothing, quality mountaineering equipment, and personal documents. You can learn more information about guides and necessary equipment from mountaineering clubs, hike hosts and guides, national park information centers, and local tourist organizations.

Avoid going on tours by yourself. Remember, you use the trails at your own risk.

10 hiking tours (trails) in Montenegro

Montenegro in short is a Disneyland for hiking and nature lovers. A lot of popular hiking trails such as Via Dinarica, Peaks of Balkan, 5 National parks with a lot of hiking and goat paths, Circuit around Kucka Korita, Mountain lakes tours, Mrtvica canyon trail, abandoned villages .. We are organizing a once in a week hiking tour depending on weather conditions and time in a year. This is a really unique experience for everyone who would like to taste “Wild beauty of Montenegro”. Today we will write short about 10 hiking tours in Montenegro that we recommend.

Mrtvica Canyon trail (tour)

Starting of this trail is now from this point Starting point to Mrtvica canyon

https://maps.app.goo.gl/ueT4DsNuM4HE2XMdA . If you are checking on some older trail information , starting may lead you from Camp Vesko. But the 2020 bridge over the river was knocked down because of a strong winter that year. All trails are marked so there is no possibility of missing a road. Most beautiful place is the Gate of Wishes , where you should think of a wish from your heart. Fairy from the mountain will make sure your wish comes true. We usually finish our tour on one beach after 9 km walking. But you can stop any time and return back with the same road. This tour of hiking in Mrtvica Canyon we have on offer on Viator , but you can call us directly.

Hiking trail (tour) to Vasojevicki kom

If you go or stay in Kolasin, on a road to Matesvo after 1 hour driving you will see Vasojevicki kom. You have a road to the beginning of trail. Also from here you can go to Kucki kom as well, elevation is 500 m and you need around 2 hours and half hiking. We recommend this tour in dry weather, because if you go in the raining period it is very slippery. However it is an amazing view and on the button you can stay in some of ethno villages.

Kucki kom hiking in Montenegro

National Park Durmitor Hiking

Our most popular National park in the North of the country. We recommend Bobotov kuku , the highest peak in this park and Montenegro and Prutas “king of views”. But only If you are in good shape for both peaks, otherwise we recommend you walk to Jablan lake. Of course always in the summer or late September , but when there is no snow. So, Bobotov kuk is best to start from Sedlo. It is very easy to find it and during all trails you have markation . Last 200 m is a little bit dangerous, auxiliary ropes are in operation. View over the Skrcka lake is gorgeous but be careful please. Hiking in Durmitor National park is a little bit tricky since the terrain we walk on is a small stone, sipar, very slippery. So always check the weather forecast before going since elevation is 900m and around 7 hours walking duration.

Prutas peak you can reach from https://www.summitpost.org/pruta/154418 , amazing view on Bobotov kuk and places around Durmitor National park. This hiking is moderate around 600 m elevation with 5 hours duration hiking. Few places from starting a route . If you are starting a trail from Zabljak we recommend you to go by this road to Plužine. It is an amazing landscape.

Pluzine, Pivsko lake

Prokletije Hiking

This is our favorite park for hiking in Montenegro. But most people always ask for Durmitor National park, well it is better marketing for sure. After all, all our Natural parks are beautiful.

We will write three hiking trails : Talijanka, Popadija , Volusnica around 7 hours hiking Karaula hiking, around 6 hours and Hridsko lake around 4 hours hiking trail . First two hiking starting from valley Grebaje. This tour also can be done from Podgorica. Good thing is that we have a new border with Albania which make one of this tours possible in one day. All this trails are as well part of Peaks of Balkan.

The other beautiful hiking would be to Hridsko lake . Elevation only 500 m very easy. After few hours you will reach this beautiful lake where fairies used to swim by one local legend.

Prokletije, Pekas of Balkan, Hiking iin Montenegro

*It is very important for hiking tours to have experience tour guide, if you need help to find one don’t hesitate to ask.

The 8 Best Hiking Trails in Montenegro

Gareth Popovic

Montenegro, a dazzling gem in the heart of the Balkans, truly is a hiker’s delight. This majestic country offers an enchanting blend of serene glacial lakes, ancient forests, captivating rivers, and rugged mountain peaks. Montenegro boasts a plethora of hiking trails, catering to casual strollers and seasoned climbers alike. Prepare to embark on an exploration of the eight finest hiking trails in this hiker’s paradise, where we’ll delve into each trail’s length, level of difficulty, and the spectacular vistas you’ll encounter.

Black Lake, Durmitor National Park

An easy one to kick us off – this tranquil and family-friendly trail is a 3.5 km loop around the serene Black Lake . Ideal for a casual stroll, this path presents picture-perfect views surrounded by towering pines and the striking backdrop of Meded Peak.

Black Lake

The path is well-marked and flat, making it suitable for younger children and those looking for a leisurely stroll. As you walk, you can enjoy the tranquil ambiance, observe local wildlife, and take in the stunning reflections on the lake’s surface. This hiking trail embodies the enchanting tranquility of Montenegro, making it a must-do for families.

More than just a serene hiking destination, Black Lake offers a variety of outdoor activities suitable for all ages. During the warmer months, visitors can rent paddle boats or canoes to explore the lake’s calm waters, or even take a refreshing dip. The area’s flat, easy trails are perfect for biking, and fishing enthusiasts can try their luck in the lake’s bountiful waters. Surrounding picnic areas provide idyllic spots for an outdoor meal. No matter your interest, Black Lake is a hub of adventure and natural beauty waiting to be explored.

Circuit around Biogradska Lake, Biogradska Gora National Park

Alexander Shchukin

An easy 3.5 km loop, this trail offers a close encounter with one of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests. The flat path around Biogradska Lake introduces you to diverse flora, fauna, and captivating views of the clear lake. The lake is an awe-inspiring spectacle of raw beauty. Its crystal-clear waters provide a perfect mirror for the riotous colors of the surrounding ancient forest and distant mountain peaks.

Spanning 229,000 square meters and plunging 12 meters at its deepest, the lake is an ever-changing canvas of reflections. From serene morning mists to fiery autumnal hues, Biogradska Lake is more than just a body of water – it’s a mesmerizing play of light, color, and undisturbed natural grandeur. Whether for a leisurely stroll, a tranquil boat ride, or a moment of reflection on its banks, this lake promises an experience as profound as nature itself.

Lovćen Mountain and National Park

The trail to the Njegoš Mausoleum atop Mount Lovćen is a relatively easy hike that covers about 6 km round-trip and a popular one in Montenegro. This well-maintained trail rewards you with panoramic views of the Montenegrin coast, Lake Skadar , and a vast range of surrounding mountains.

a person standing on a rocky hill

The climax of this journey is the grand Njegoš Mausoleum, an architectural marvel and tribute to the Montenegrin poet and philosopher bishop, Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. Here, the views extend even further, offering a rewarding visual feast at the end of your trek. This blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty truly creates a gratifying payoff for hikers who embark on this trail.

Piva Canyon Path

With a length of 10 km, this moderate-level trail takes you along the dramatic Piva River Canyon. Expect to experience stunning cliffside views, dense forest landscapes, and the striking turquoise waters of the Piva River and Lake.

Canyon Piva

Ladder of Kotor

This historic 10 km one-way trail is of moderate difficulty, starting from Kotor ’s old town and reaching 940 meters at its peak. As you ascend the switchback path, the view of the Bay of Kotor keeps getting better and better.

an aerial view of a city and a harbor

While the trail is not technically demanding, it does require a good level of physical fitness due to its length and the continuous uphill climb. The path is well-trodden and marked, but it can be rocky and rough in places, which might be challenging for very young children or people with limited mobility.

If you have older children who are accustomed to hiking and enjoy outdoor adventures, they might find this hike exciting. It’s always recommended to start early to avoid the midday sun, carry plenty of water, and wear sturdy footwear. The hike can take up to 4-5 hours for the average hiker, so do plan your day accordingly.

Remember, even if you don’t make it to the top, the lower parts of the trail also offer fantastic views of the town and the bay. Thus, you can turn back whenever you feel ready.

Rumija Mountain Trail

Now we get to the tougher ones – so generally not recommended for younger children. Maybe the pluckier older ones can join.

St. Trinity Church on mt. Rumija

Covering 14 km round-trip, this trail of moderate to high difficulty begins in the coastal town of Bar and ascends Rumija Mountain. The stunning trail offers the rare sight of the Adriatic Sea, Lake Skadar , and the Albanian Alps seamlessly blending into one another.

The peak of the 1595-meter-high Rumija Mountain offers an extraordinary panorama: the Adriatic Sea on one side and Skadar Lake on the other. It’s a sight that’s as breathtaking as it is unique. The summit also holds significant cultural importance, being the location of an annual tradition that dates back a thousand years. Here, on St. Trinity Day, people of three different faiths – Orthodox, Catholic, and Muslim – gather to bring the cross of St. Jovan Vladimir.

Prokletije National Park, Volušnica and Taljanka Peaks

Pause for breath

This strenuous 15 km round-trip trail takes you through dense forests, alpine grasslands, and craggy mountain terrain. The hike culminates at the Volušnica and Taljanka peaks, offering unmatched views of the ‘Albanian Alps’.

Grebaje Valley

Located in the heart of Prokletije , also known as the Accursed Mountains, the Grebaje Valley is a hiker’s dream come true. This corner of Southwest Montenegro is home to a landscape of stunning mountains that provide unmatched panoramic vistas. Among these grand heights are Mount Volušnica and Mount Taljanka, which perch on the border between Albania and Montenegro.

From these summits, one can soak in breathtaking views of the Karanfili massif, including the distinctive Karanfili peaks, the sharp Očnjak, and the Vezirova Brada pass – the gateway to these magnificent ranges. This blend of natural splendor underscores why Grebaje Valley is regarded as a wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts.

Bobotov Kuk, Durmitor National Park

And last but not least on our list of hiking trails in Montenegro.

The most challenging on the list, the 10 km round-trip hike to Bobotov Kuk , Montenegro’s highest peak at 2,523 meters, is a true test of endurance and hiking ability. Navigate through rocky terrains and sharp turns to reach the top, where breathtaking views of the Durmitor massif await.

hiking tour montenegro

The journey to the summit of Bobotov Kuk can be navigated through four distinct trails, each offering unique route combinations. However, it’s crucial to be mindful that the time of year and weather conditions can affect the accessibility of certain paths, making it a good practice to check in with the local Žabljak authorities before embarking on your hike. Each trail is distinctly marked with red circles featuring white centers to guide your journey.

For the more ambitious hikers, a challenging trail starts directly from Žabljak, passes by the stunning Crno Jezero ( Black Lake ), and approaches Bobotov Kuk from the northeast. This demanding route typically takes about five hours to conquer. The remaining three trails initiate from the south and west, converging at Zeleni Vir Lake and continuing as one until they link up with the Žabljak route at the Velika Privija Pass, creating a versatile network of trails for every level of hiking enthusiast.

Some tips before you go

Know Your Trail: Gain a thorough understanding of your selected trail before setting foot on it. Familiarize yourself with the trail’s length, altitude shifts, and degree of difficulty.

Check the Weather: Montenegro’s weather can be unpredictable, particularly in mountainous regions. Always check the forecast before your hike and plan accordingly.

Pack Smart: Ensure you have all the necessary supplies for your hike. This includes ample water, high-energy snacks, a map, compass, first-aid kit, multi-tool, headlamp, rain gear, and warm clothing layers.

Wear Proper Footwear: Mountain trails can be rugged and challenging. Wear sturdy hiking boots that are well broken-in to provide good ankle support and traction.

Start Early: Most of these trails take several hours to complete. It’s best to start early in the morning to avoid hiking in the dark and to ensure you have enough time to enjoy the views.

Respect the Environment: Preserve the natural beauty of Montenegro’s trails by sticking to the designated path, carrying out all trash, and observing all trail signs and closures.

Stay Safe: Be aware of your surroundings and watch your footing, especially on steep or rocky sections. Let someone know your hiking plans before you go, and ideally, don’t hike alone.

Acclimatize: Some of these hikes, like Bobotov Kuk, reach high altitudes. If you’re not used to these heights, take time to acclimatize and listen to your body to prevent altitude sickness.

Take Regular Breaks: Hiking is not a race. Regular breaks help maintain your energy and give you time to enjoy the breathtaking views.

Local Advice: If possible, consult with local experts or experienced hikers to get valuable insights about the trails.

Remember, hiking should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience – and definitely is in Montenegro. By preparing adequately and respecting the environment, you’ll create a memorable adventure in Montenegro’s majestic mountains.

We recommend flying into Podgorica Airport, from where you will be collected by a private taxi transfer and taken to Cetinje (45min). Check in at your small friendly guesthouse before taking some time to stroll around the lovely old royal capital of Montenegro, founded in the 15th century.

Rich in cultural and historical heritage, there is plenty to see including the royal palace, the grand embassy building and the Cetinje Monastery, destroyed and rebuilt several times over Montenegro’s history.

La Vecchia Casa

An old traditional house in the centre of Cetinje, La Vecchia Casa is a warm and welcoming family run guesthouse.  Breakfast isn't served but they provide eggs, coffee and other breakfast items to make yourself in the kitchen. There is also a lovely garden in which to relax at the end of the day.

A short transfer this morning (30m) brings you to Karuc, a picturesque fishing village on the edge of Lake Skadar. The largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, Skadar is very beautiful (legend says it was created by the tears of a pixie!). It's home to around 270 different types of birds, so don't forget your binoculars today. These include the White Egret, Dalmatian Pelican and Pygmy Cormorant.

On arrival, a relaxing cruise (1h) on a traditional wooden boat gliding amongst the pretty lily pads of the lake gets you closer to some of the birdlife and lets you take in some of the lovely scenery and the tranquility of the lake.

Back in Karuc, we recommend taking some time to enjoy some of the local fish specialities in a café before starting the short walk. You go pass some of the ancient villages in this area with beautiful views of the lake before visiting a local producer of delicious Montenegrin wine for an included tasting. A transfer will collect you passing by the iconic viewpoint of the Rijeka Crnojevica Bridge over Lake Skadar before arriving back in Cetinje.

Please note that today, depending on the availability of the vineyards, you will visit one of two possible options and the walking distances vary slightly between the two. The above distances are based on the longer walk to Jablan Vineyard. Our local partner will tell you which vineyard you are visiting in your welcome meeting on day 1. The walking routes to both vineyards are available to follow in our Macs Adventure app.

Jablan Vineyard walk: 6kms/4mi Ascent/Descent : 149m/50m

Mrkan Vineyard walk: 5kms/3mi Ascent/Descent: 167m/31m

Head out of Cetinje and on to an old trader’s route which will lead you through the mountains and valleys of Lovcen, to your next base in Ivanova Korita, in the heart of the national park.

Your rustic mountain hotel is a lovely place to spend the next couple of nights with its location in a beautiful valley covered with forests and meadows. Enjoy the fantastic views and sample some delicious Montenegrin food and wine.

Ascent/Descent:  619m/5m

HotelMonteRosa

Set within Lovćen National Park, Hotel Monte Rosa enjoys a quiet setting offering views of the surrounding mountains. It provides an on-site restaurant and a bar with a spacious terrace. The nearest Ski lift is 750 yards away, while the town of Cetinje is 9.3 miles away

Ivanov Konak Hotel

With its fantastic location in the heart of Lovcen National Park, Hotel Ivanov Konak offers rustically furnished rooms, a lovely big restaurant with two huge fireplaces serving Montenegrin specialities and of course wonderful views of the surrounding countryside

An exhilarating loop walk today from your hotel to the second-highest point of the National Park, the Jzerski Summit.

Climb a thigh-burning 461 steps leading to the Njegos monument which sits at the summit to be rewarded with panoramic views reaching as far as Kotor Bay in the south, the Albanian Alps in the east and Skadar Lake. Visit the atrium and the crypt before making your way back to your hotel.

Ascent/Descent: 407m/407m

Head towards the Adriatic, continuing on the old trade route which once connected Cetinje with Kotor, now known as the “Ladder of Kotor”.

Take in amazing views towards the Bay of Kotor as you zig-zag down towards Kotor. Continue on the trail past the Chapel of St Ivan, an old catholic church, and the fortress of Castle of San Giovanni, enjoying changing views of the bay the whole time. Finally, you will reach the walls of the Old Town via a series of old stone staircases.

The fortified town of Kotor is a deserved UNESCO World Heritage Site with its Venetian palaces, Roman Catholic cathedrals, Byzantine church, and romantic cobbled streets.

Ascent/Descent:  100m/1390m

montecristo

Hotel Monte Cristo is a lovely old 4* hotel in the centre of the old town in Kotor. Housed in a building from the 13th century, the rooms are tastefully furnished and you can enjoy breakfast overlooking their quiet courtyard.

Babilon Hotel

With its spacious terrace, sea views and private beach area, this is a lovely place to relax at the end of the day, and their intimate restaurant serves traditional Montenegrin cuisine and fish specialities. It costs approx 8 Euros in a taxi from the hotel to the centre of Kotor.

Mount Vrmac sits as a barrier between the innermost part of the Bay of Kotor and the outer part, the Bay of Tivat. Your walk starts in the centre of Kotor on the military zig-zag trail named after Austrian emperor Franz-Josef and climbs up to the “Vrmac Fortress” built in 1892.

Follow a mountain ridge to the summit (765m) before descending on an old shepherd’s trail to the village of Donji Stoliv. Enjoy a coffee at the seaside promenade before being picked up and transferred back to your hotel in Kotor (15min).

Ascent/Descent:  744m/818m

Your day will start with a short transfer to the village of Orahovac, from here a meandering trail ascends through the forest to the ruins of Vranovo Brdo fortress (743m) for great views of the surrounding turquoise coast.

Enjoy a picnic lunch taking in the views before joining another military path down to the small town of Perast. We highly recommend taking a boat trip over to the very pretty “Our Lady of the Rocks” church dating back to 1484 which sits on a manmade island off the coast of Perast.

This charming little church has some beautifully intricate alter and ceiling frescoes well worth a look. Make your way back over to Perast, where a transfer will take you back to Kotor. (20min).

Ascent/Descent:  700m/775m

Check out after breakfast and make your way back to either Tivat (15min), Podgorica (1h 50m) or Dubrovnik Airport (2.5h).

This trip has a carbon score of 15kg per person per night, meaning it’s one of our greenest trips! You can start this walking tour on any day of the week between mid-March and the end of October, subject to availability. Montenegro enjoys a pleasant climate perfect for walking in spring and autumn. The coastline has typically Mediterranean weather with very warm summers whereas in the National Park it gets slightly cooler. At the start and end of the season there is a greater probability of rain and we would recommend packing plenty of layers as the temperature can more variable. May is the best time to see the wild flowers and late September to mid October for the fall colours,  July and August are good months to go, but can be very hot for walking and therefore aren’t best suited for everyone. You will have to start early to miss the heat of the day and carry a lot of water (additional weight) with you. Although the towns and villages are buzzing at this time of year which is great to see.

By Air - The closest airport to Cetinje is Podgorica and this is where we recommend flying to.  From the UK you can fly from London to Podgorica with airlines like Ryanair or TUI . From Europe, other airlines flying to Podgorica include Turkish Airlines , Austrian Airlines and Air France amongst others. From Podgorica a private taxi transfer is included to take you to Cetinje (approx 45min). It is also possible to fly to Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia, from where you would take a shuttle to the centre of Dubrovnik and then another two buses to Cetinje via Herceg Novi (3.5h in total).  By Road : It is possible to drive to Cetinje from the coast via the E65/E80 and M2.3 roads (approx 1h 10m from Kotor).

By Air: The closest airports to Kotor are either Tivat Airport or Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia. There is no public transport from Kotor to Tivat Airport but we can pre-book very reasonably priced airport transfers for you in advance which would take approx 20 minutes. Airlines flying to Tivat from the UK include Easyjet and Montenegro Airlines.  To get to Dubrovnik Airport, you would take a bus to the centre of Dubrovnik (once daily, 2h) and then a shuttle bus to the airport (30min, hourly departures). There are many flights to Dubrovnik from both the UK and Europe. We can also arrange private transfers from Kotor to Dubrovnik airport for an additional cost. Please select the required option when making your booking or ask one of our D&A Specialists for details.

Your bags will be transferred from your accommodation as per your itinerary and moved onto your next overnight stay. We ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to 20kg per person.

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity and emergency evacuation and hospital care.

We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as the region is extremely popular and the accommodations do get booked up quickly. However, we will always try our very best to accommodate your plans.

Your detailed information pack will be sent to you after you book. This has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, waterproof clothes and a day pack.

Peaks of the balkans trail from cerem to Doberdol

PEAKS OF THE BALKANS

Peaks of the Balkans trek is the best way to experience Kosovo, Montenegro & Albania’s unforgettable combination of natural beauty and cultural richness. Moreover, the “Peaks of the Balkans” guide leads through one of the most remote and wild mountainous regions of the Western Balkans. By using shepherd paths and footways, the trail winds through high alpine mountains up to 2300 m above sea level.

Peaks of the Balkans trail is a 192-km cross-border trekking trail through the Accursed Mountains of Albania , Kosovo, and Montenegro. Considering the region’s turbulent history and once tightly controlled borders, especially during the communist period, it was impossible to move across these places. No longer. Nowadays, the trek has become very popular and people around the world are coming to visit this very remote area.

Peaks of the Balkans trail is a must-do for any hiker.

The level of difficulty ranges from easy to moderate + but requires good physical condition and mountain equipment.

Tropoja Lake in Kosovo

Peaks of the Balkans is a trekking route that passes through the high mountains of Kosovo, Montenegro, and Albania. It covers a distance of approximately 200 km and offers scenic views of the region's rugged landscapes and remote communities. The itinerary below starts from Albania, however, when booking, you can choose where to start and where to end up.

Meet and greet with the guide in Tirana city, followed by a transfer towards Theth, passing through the beautiful Valley of Boga, gate to the Albanian Alps.

We will stop at Qafe Thore – the diagonal Pass, to enjoy the spectacular mountainous landscape unfolding in front of us. We will switch to a local van and drive downhill to a nice guesthouse in the village where we will stay overnight and enjoy a tasty homemade meal.

In the afternoon, we will have a short walk into Thethi National Park.

Note: We can arrange transfer from Podgorica as well.

For the next couple of hours, the trail climbs slightly more steeply towards higher ground and we walk over a pass known as Valbona Pass. After several hours hiking uphill, we stop at the Zefi’s housing for a hot mountain tea.

Resuming our hike for another 45-min, we continue ascending to the Valbona col (1792m) where we have outstanding views of the Albanian Alps and the Valley of Valbona.

After lunch, we make our way down to the valley. Of course, we can choose whether to independently continue walking down on the main wide dried up riverbed road or take a van to avoid it.

From here, we continue trekking another 30 minutes toward the shepherd's hut where we'll enjoy a final coffee and mountain tea. Henceforward we can see the village of Cerem where we'll stay tonight after another 2 hours of further hiking downhill to reach our destination.

Today’s hike is a relatively long hike with lots of ups, downs and mostly is into the forest. We briefly cross the Montenegro border and return in Albania until we reach the ruins of the old military border post. Further on we take a picnic break at the hamlet of Balqin, which is used by the shepherds during the summer season. After a hearty lunch and coffee break, we continue to walk along a mostly flat, scenic trail through patches of beech forest. We finally reach Doberdol pasture.

Today’s cross-border trail into Prokletije National Park, crossing from Montenegro to Albania is certain to be a memorable one.

The path passes along the craggiest part of the Prokletje/Bjeshkёt e Namuna/Alpet Shqipёtare Mountains. Almost the entire hike is surrounded by steep mountains with stunning views. Bosnia and herzegovina, czech republic, liechtenstein, netherlands, north macedonia, switzerland, türkiye/turkey, united kingdom, bike & boat, multi-activity, vessels & boats, advanced search, montenegro walking tours, explore montenegro your way on a stunning walking holiday.

Set on the spectacular Adriatic coast south of Croatia, the small nation of Montenegro has got it all – a rich history of royalty, remarkable architecture perched on crumbling cliffs and outrageous natural beauty.

Montenegro is a nation defined by its rugged dark mountains and dazzling beaches, and this diverse terrain is superbly suited for active travel. Enjoy walking along the stunning beaches and terraced towns of the Adriatic coastline, with the Dinaric Mountains looming in the near distance. Take advantage of rest stops to dip into the cool turquoise waters and admire the bobbing boats in the endless harbours. Explore the cobbled streets and impressive craftsmanship of ancient walled cities. Away from the seaside, take the back roads through Montenegro’s storybook olive groves and gaze in awe at the splendid panoramas over Skadar Lake, set against the jagged backdrop of the Accursed Mountain Range. Encounter timeless shepherding villages that still practice old fashioned lifestyles and learn of the Mediterranean influence on the local culture. Don’t miss the incredible Bay of Kotor and the lively atmosphere of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Old Town, the perfect setting for al fresco dining on freshly grilled seafood or hearty Balkan cuisine. Montenegro may not be as widely known as its neighbours in the Mediterranean, but its anonymity belies just how rewarding a walking holiday to Montenegro can be.

Montenegro is an underrated gem! The tour was perfect even though the weather wasn't at all times, but Borislav, our tour escort made sure we plan our day such that we make most of the sunny days as well as enjoy the rainy ones. The tour was well organized, well paced, communication was great and we were well taken care of at every step. We'd love to visit again someday cause 8 days isn't enough to explore this beautiful country!

Montenegro is a lovely country and we hope to return to see more of it. We had some difficulties with the payment function on TourRadar's website and some of the communication seemed complicated, but we managed. Thank you! Carolyn

Our guide, Nemanja, was excellent and made us feel like family. He was also our driver and made detours to make our trip extra special. Very thoughtful and kind. He knew the trails well and explained the historical elements well. We truly enjoyed every aspect of this trip. The information and coordination before the trip was deplorable. Tour Radar and Nature Trips did not get us the necessary vouchers and information until two days before our trip. Tour Radar really let the ball drop and it took us going onto FB and looking up the WhatsApp number and calling Nature Trips directly to get the necessary information. I would give Tour Radar a failing grade but Nemanja and his agency an excellent.

An incredible experience from start to finish! Montenegro is stunning and travelling on a boat it gave us a totally different outlook on this amazing part of the world. Toni our captain was not just incredible at his job but also such a really nice guy who really took the time to tell us what to do in each of the marinas we docked in and also gave us a lot of useful information that made the experience even better. I am contemplating doing the same tour next year :-)

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India
  • Small ship cruises

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

  • Our African safaris
  • Costa Rica Wildlife

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

  • Tuscany & the Cinque Terre
  • Argentina: Hikes and Estancias of Patagonia
  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as  Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin,  are Trip Level 3.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

  • Ultimate Patagonia
  • Hiking the Spanish Pyrenees

Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.
