Maui Trip Planning: What You Need to Know Before You Book

With this step-by-step guide, we will have you confidently finish your Maui trip planning. With ways to save, videos, and insider tips, we have your back for the best trip ever to the Valley Isle.

If you’re a visual learner, see our Maui Travel Guide video below. At a minimum, the video will get you excited about planning your trip to Maui.

1. Best Month to Visit Maui

The best month to visit Maui is September for the best prices on hotels, rental cars, and flights. You will also find the fewest visitors on the island and excellent weather in September.

The best times to visit Maui are the shoulder seasons of September and October and May and April. With schools in session and decent weather on the mainland, demand goes down for a Maui vacation so hotels and rental car companies drop their rates. If you don’t have the ability to visit during the shoulder season, here are ways to have a Maui vacation for less .

We go back and forth on the worst time to visit Maui . You be the judge if a holiday vacation is worth it for your family: How to Plan a Hawaii Christmas Vacation .

Many Maui trip planners want to visit Maui for whale season. Officially, whale season on Maui is from mid-December till the end of March. See our Maui Whale Guide for details.

For more details on the best month to visit Maui, see our Is There a Best Time to Visit Maui? Yes, and Here’s Why .

2. Cheapest Time of Year to Visit Maui

Maui is by no means a cheap vacation. But there are times when costs are high and other times when your dollar can stretch a bit further.

The cheapest time to visit Maui is May, September, October, and November. Those months offer the lowest rates on accommodations.

September has historically been the cheapest time of year to visit Maui due to low hotel rates.

Maui is the most expensive Hawaiian Island to visit ( here is the cheapest Hawaiian Island ). Maui is ranked third in the world as the most expensive sun and sea destination .

You can save money when planning a trip to Maui by finding a good deal on a hotel. Here are ways to save on hotels in Hawaii !

When are the cheapest flights to Maui? Based on the data, this is the cheapest time to fly to Maui .

3. How Many Days Do You Need on Maui

We recommend staying for a minimum of 5 days on Maui. The average trip to Maui is 8.1 days per the Hawaii Tourism Authority .

Do you want to go-go-go each day and do every activity on Maui? Do you need some days to sit on the beach and do nothing? Or are you purely coming to relax with your feet in the sand and sip a tropical drink?

Once you know the pace you’re going for, you can start building your list of activities to decide how many days you’ll want to stay on Maui .

Our Maui Wayfinder Itinerary includes 8 excursion days that take you all over the island, from Lahaina Town in West Maui to Upcountry Maui . To be honest, it would be exhausting to do all eight days on your trip (pick your favorites!). Hence, figure out what you want to do in the Things to Do Section to better gauge how much time you need on Maui.

4. How Far in Advance to Book a Trip to Maui

We recommend booking six months in advance for a trip to Maui. When traveling during Maui’s busy seasons of Christmas and summer, book nine months in advance.

A caveat, if you’re reading this two months before your trip then don’t sweat it. Our advice here will help you with your Maui trip planning.

We recommend booking six months in advance to secure the best prices for rental cars and hotels. Plus, you will be able to pick your preferred hotel room for the dates you want.

Things do sell out on Maui so book ahead for peace of mind. As we share in our newsletter often, Book Early is our motto at The Hawaii Vacation Guide. As visitor demand increases to Maui, you will find prices will skyrocket.

For a nice restaurant, like Mama’s Fish House , then book six months in advance for a table and your preferred date.

Want something that doesn’t require a booking far in advance? Book a Hawaii lei greeting at the airport. A lei greeting is a fun way to start your vacation!

How Far in Advance to Book a Trip to Maui maui trip planning restaurants

Our favorite Maui snorkel tours and guided tours don’t sell out until weeks in advance (depending on the time of the year), but you want to ensure your whole family can go on the date you prefer.

Final booking tip: By booking early in your Maui trip planning, you can check to see if prices have changed. Lock in a price and then check to see if the price of the discount rental car or hotel has dropped. Then you can cancel and rebook.

5. Where Should You Stay on Maui?

While there are five main areas on Maui, most visitors stay on either West Maui or South Maui to maximize their odds of sunshine, warm weather, and lack of rain.

Whether you should stay in West Maui (Ka’anapali, Lahaina, Napili, Kapalua) or South Maui (Kihei, Wailea, Makena) is often a heated debate. We try to help you make the right decision for you with these two articles:

  • Where to Stay on Maui: your accommodation guide
  • Ka’anapali vs. Wailea: pick your perfect spot

Watch our Where to Stay on Maui video (or our 6 Best Maui Luxury Resorts video ) for an overview of the places to stay on Maui for your Maui trip planning.

6. Should you stay in a hotel or vacation rental on Maui?

Go for a hotel if you’re looking for the traditional resort experience with big pools, nearby beaches, and restaurants within walking distance. Opt for a vacation rental if you want access to a kitchen, are looking for space, or are looking to save money.

We routinely stay in both. When doing our Maui trip planning, we’ll book a vacation rental for the majority of our stay so we have access to a kitchen and a little more space for the kids. Then we’ll treat ourselves to a great resort for a few days to enjoy the pool and other amenities. This has been a winning combo for us recently.

If you’re still not sure what you want to do, we break down the difference between choosing a hotel and a vacation rental in Hawaii . We also share how to spot an illegal vacation rental .

7. Do You Need a Rental Car on Maui?

We get this question asked a lot. Oahu is the best Hawaiian Island for not having a rental car . We believe you need a rental car in Maui to do the best things to do , especially things to do with kids on Maui .

A rental car will be more cost-efficient than using Uber, Lyft, or taxis to navigate Maui. We recommend using Discount Hawaii Car Rental as they have the lowest prices and no pre-payment (tip: book early and watch prices) or a local Maui rental car company .

You can get by without a rental car on Maui by staying in the resort areas of Wailea and Kaanapali. Enjoy a more casual beach vacation with Uber or taxi rides to restaurants or beaches in the area. Here are 11 Tips for Getting Around Maui Without a Rental Car .

8. What to Pack for Maui Vacation

We are all about packing light for a Maui vacation. Erica loves to bring packing cubes to keep us organized and I like to bring sandals (slippers in Hawaii) and t-shirts.

We witness visitors packing sweatshirts and jeans for their tropical vacation to Maui. The temperature in the resort areas gets down to the low 70s during the night. Maui is a warm place. Unless you’re easily cold, save room in your suitcase with only the essentials.

Here is your essential list of what to pack for Maui:

  • Shorts and T-shirts
  • One Gorgeous Island Style Outfit
  • Comfortable Footwear: sandals and hiking or walking shoes
  • Swimsuit (of course)
  • Sun-Protective Clothing
  • Mineral-Based Sunscreen
  • UV-Protective Sunglasses
  • Water Bottle

See our What to Pack for Your Hawaii Vacation for our full list. Browse our Travel Gear for recommendations on sunscreen, sun protective clothing, and snorkel gear.

Trip Planning When You’re on Maui

The main elements of your Maui trip planning are now complete (airlines, flights, and rental car), here is what to consider once you’re on Maui.

9. Understand the Geography

Geography on Maui is important because it will affect the weather you experience and what you do while on vacation. One big thing to understand about geography is that each island has a windward (wet side) and a leeward side (dry side)

maui trip planning stay on the dry side of Maui.

On Maui, the leeward side of the island includes some great beaches, like Wailea Beach and Ka’anapali Beach. Hence, the resorts are located here to soak up the sunny days as rain is less frequent.

The windward side of the island is home to the Road to Hana and a lot of beautiful waterfalls. The Road to Hana is a jungle drive thanks to all the rain on the windward side of the island. While mentioning the Road to Hana, decide here if it is worth driving during your Maui trip.

10. Eat Local on Maui

No Maui trip planning is complete without where to eat. Maui has some of the best food in the Hawaiian Islands. Here are some tips on where to eat on Maui. Eating local is one way to have an authentic Hawaiian experience .

maui trip planning where to eat shave ice

  • Fresh, locally caught fish : If you’re a seafood fan, don’t miss out on the fresh fish. You can enjoy it at either a restaurant or at a fish market. You’ll see options like Mahi Mahi, Ono, Opah, Ahi, and more.
  • Maui food trucks are the best in the Hawaiian Islands. Enjoy fresh ingredients, experimental chefs, and food truck parks for the whole family. See our Ultimate Maui Food Truck Guide on where to eat.
  • Locally grown produce : Enjoy dragon fruit, coconut, lilikoi, pineapples, locally produced honey, and more. We love doing Maui farm tours , but if that’s not part of your vacation itinerary, try a farm-to-table restaurant like Pacific’O in Lahaina or Ula’Ula Cafe . You’ll get to sample some island flavors while supporting the agriculture industry here. There is a large farmers market in Kula on Saturdays and another in Napili.
  • Traditional Hawaiian food : You don’t need to go to one of Maui’s best luaus to sample some traditional Hawaiian dishes. Look for dishes like poi (taro that has been pounded into a paste), laulau (meat wrapped and cooked in taro leaves), kalua pig (slow-roasted pork cooked in an underground oven), and poke (diced, raw fish that is wonderfully flavored).
  • Shave ice : Not shaved ice. You may think that this is like a snowcone, but it couldn’t be further from it. Soft fluffy ice shavings that are flavored with different syrups and creative flavor combinations. You might also have the add-on of fruit and ice cream. It’s so, so good. Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice is our favorite on Maui and is located all over the island.

11. Things to Do on Maui

Perhaps you jumped straight to this one for your Maui trip planning. Understanding what you want to do on your Maui vacation helps decide where you want to spend your time and money, and even where you want to stay.

Here are the most popular things to do in Maui.

  • Humpback whale season is from mid-December till the end of March. We found Maui to be the best Hawaiian island for whale watching. Our Maui Whale Guide will tell you how to do it right or enjoy one of our seven favorite Maui whale tours .
  • Haleakala National Park is a stunning destination. See the endangered Nene bird and Silversword (‘ahinahina in Hawaiian) that only grows at the summit. Go hiking for the day and decide if the Haleakala sunrise or sunset is right for you.
  • Napili Bay is a beautiful bay on Maui’s northwest shore. Come for the day to swim and snorkel with Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (stay 10 feet away in the water). As a bonus, The Gazebo is great for breakfast and the Sea House is excellent for happy hour and dinner to end your day. Both are located on Napili Bay.

12. Can’t-Miss Activities and Tours

A tour is not required for your Maui vacation. Maui is full of things to do that are free or low cost. But, Maui has some amazing tours and excellent tour companies to take you out on the water or explore the island.

See all our researched and vetted Maui tour companies here . We also have Hawaii Vacation Guide Coupons for many Maui tour operators.

Here are the most popular Maui tours:

  • Road to Hana is best done with a local guide. The dangerous road is now more challenging with traffic and no parking tickets (see our Road to Hana Etiquette ), so let an expert take you to all the best stops. Save 10% with promo code HVG10 at checkout.
  • Molokini Crater is a unique Hawaii snorkel destination. The crystal clear water and vibrant reef are worth a morning snorkel trip. Let our favorite catamaran crew take you out from South Maui for a sunrise or mid-morning tour .
  • Whale Watching is a must when you visit Maui from December through March. See our seven favorite whale-watching tours to pick the tour right for you.

13. Use the Right Sunscreen on Maui

Starting in 2021, Hawaii required only reef-safe sunscreens to be sold in the state. We share Hawaii reef-safe sunscreen brands here .

Maui has taken further action to protect the reefs around the island. Maui requires only mineral-based sunscreens (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) to be sold on the island. We share our two favorite mineral-based sunscreens in our Travel Gear , one is a local Maui brand.

14. Learn About Maui Culture

The people of Maui are what makes the island such a special place to visit. From the Hawaiians to the plantation migrants who came in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the culture is uniquely Hawaii.

Check out the museums and cultural activities below during your vacation as the icing on the cake for your Maui trip planning.

  • Hale Ho’ike’ike at the Bailey House in Wailuku to learn Hawaiian history, local history, and see original artifacts.
  • Hawaii Wildlife Discovery Center to learn about the ocean and Maui’s reefs at this interactive exhibit in Kaanapali’s Whalers Village.
  • Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Ride – learn how the Polynesians travel the Pacific and between the island while you paddle as a team on an outrigger canoe. See Ali’i Outrigger Canoe in West Maui.

5 Days in Maui: The Maui Itinerary You’ll Want to Copy

Headed to Hawaii and looking for a Maui itinerary that’ll show you the best of the best of the island? Keep reading for the perfect 5 days in Maui, which will cover everything you need to know and then some!

Imagine sunrise at Maui’s famous volcano , snorkeling with sea turtles , a drive down the famed (and for good reason) Road to Hana , and more shave ice than you ever thought possible.

Maui (and Hawaii in general ) is a place I could revisit time and time again. And lucky you, I’ve not only compiled all of my best island tips, but I’ve perfected the most varied Maui itinerary you can imagine.

The island is full of white (and black) sandy beaches, dolphins and sea turtles playing in the water, mouth-watering food (fresh fish, anyone?), and you can’t forget about that cool cool island breeze. I’d go back tomorrow in a heartbeat if I could.

There’s just something about island life that really calls to me. Maybe it’s the fact that I can literally wear sundresses, bikinis, and sandals everyday, or the fact that the sea turtles and tropical fish are just steps away (once you get into the ocean of course).

And with over 275 sunny days a year, Maui’s weather is truly hard to beat (okay, maybe it rivals that of Orange County or San Diego , but who’s counting)?

And thankfully, now that we live on the West Coast, Hawaii is like our new Caribbean, and we aim to visit at least once a year. Fiiiiine by me. 🙂 We’ve recently spent a few days in Kauai , and I’m still telling everyone how I celebrated my 30th birthday by jumping out of a plane and eating everything in sight in Oahu .

Logistics for your 5 days in Maui

When to visit maui.

Thankfully, there’s not really a bad time to visit Maui, as the weather is pretty much fantastic no matter the month. The warm tropical climate is consistent year round, and you’ll find daytime highs in the mid-80s in the summer, and daytime highs in the mid-70s during the “winter” months.

If you’re looking for dry weather, avoid visiting between November through March, as this is when Maui receives the majority of it’s rain. Thinking of visiting then? Don’t fret – rain showers are short, usually only lasting for a few minutes, and then bringing back the clear skies and sunshine. And plus – that’s prime time for rainbow spotting!

Keep reading for the perfect 5 days in Maui, which will cover everything from sunrise at Maui’s famous volcano, snorkeling with sea turtles, a drive down the famed (and for good reason) Road to Hana, and more shave ice than you ever thought possible.

Looking to save a bit of money (aren’t we all)?! Visit Maui in either the spring (late March – May) or fall (September – early November). You’ll likely be able to find deals on accommodation, as well as experience less crowds.

Hoping to catch a glimpse of those majestic humpback whales migrating down the Pacific from Alaska? From January – March, Maui is the best spot in the states to observe this migration.

How to Get to Maui

So here’s the thing: getting to Maui can be pretty expensive. Unless you’re coming straight from the West Coast, most flights will have a layover in Honolulu (on Oahu ), but don’t let that deter you. Maui’s by far our favorite island, just trust me on that!

When you fly into Maui, you’ll be heading into Kahululi Airport (code OGG).  Make sure to look out the window upon descent — the turquoise waters will blow you away before you even touch land.

Flights from SFO (San Francisco) to Maui are roughly 5 hours, 20 minutes, with the flight from LAX (Los Angeles) being slightly longer at 5 hours, 40 minutes. I normally find flights from the West Coast to Hawaii for approximately $450, although I’ve seen them offered as low as in the $300’s roundtrip.

maui bus trip planner

A few tips for saving on airfare:

  • I swear by Skyscanner and Google Flights , and always always always use these two sites when looking for airfare.  The option to watch prices and get email notifications are top notch and one of my favorite features of the two.
  • And now that Southwest has routes from California to Hawaii , flight prices have gotten even more competitive. Look out for those $200 round trip tickets from the west coast (they go fast so snag them up as soon as you see them)!
  • Do some flight comparisons . You may want to first check prices from your home airport directly to Maui, and then compare those with the flight prices to SFO/LAX and then onto Maui from there. Sometimes it may be worth it to fly into California first.

Not only will you possibly save a few pennies on the flights, but you can spend a few days in California (while adjusting to West Coast time zone, ultimately helping with jet lag in Hawaii) and get two trips outta one!

Where to Stay on Maui

On Maui, you’ll find a wide range of accommodations, including high-end fancy schmancy resorts (with multiple pools and restaurants on site), trendy, boutique hotels, the cutest bed and breakfasts you’ve ever seen, and lots of vacation rentals.

There are accommodation options all over the island, including Kapalua , Kaanapali , Lahaina , Kihei , Makena and Wailea . Note that if you’re hoping to break up the Road to Hana into two days, there’s only one resort in Hana in East Maui, the Travaasa Hana (best to book this ASAP).

Headed to Hawaii and looking for a Maui itinerary that’ll show you the best of the best of the island? Keep reading for the perfect 5 days in Maui, which will cover everything from sunrise at Maui’s famous volcano, snorkeling with sea turtles, a drive down the famed (and for good reason) Road to Hana, and more shave ice than you ever thought possible.

The bulk of the visitors to Maui stay in either Kaanapali, Lahaina, or South Maui (Kihei or Wailea), which is where the majority of the high-end resorts and rentals are.

West Maui: Kaanapali and Lahaina

Kaanapali and Lahaina are resort communities in west Maui, roughly 10 minutes apart. You can get a place there and essentially never have to leave the area. And plus, this side of the island boasts some of the most beautiful beaches on the island, in my opinion (check out the photos of Napili Bay below).

However, there’s not much nightlife as things close early, so our dinners were our primarily “activity” come night time. We found this totally fine because by the end of the day we were downright pooped! In addition, because of it’s high popularity, the streets, beaches, and restaurants are usually fairly crowded, especially in high season.

We’ve stayed at both the Aston Kaanapali Shores (absolutely loved the pool and garden area) and the Kaanapali Beach Hotel (fantastic budget option super close to famous Black Rock beach). We’ve also stayed in vacation rentals Maui a few times when we knew we’d be out exploring (and not taking advantage of resort amenities) each day.

Recommended Hotels in Kaanapali: Aston Kaanapali Shores | The Westin Maui Resort + Spa | Hyatt Regency Maui | Sheraton Maui Resort + Spa

South Maui: Kihei and Wailea

In Kihei you’ll find plenty of laid-back condo rentals and hotel options for those more on a budget (~$100-200ish). Like West Maui, Kihei has tons of restaurants, stores, and supermarkets that are all within a few blocks of each other and easily accessible by foot.

Kihei in general is more of a local’s beach town, so you’ll find less tourists and more peace and quiet for the most part. Do note that you’ll most likely have to drive 5-10 minutes to find beaches suitable for swimming and snorkeling. But because of its central location between Lahaina and Wailea, breathtaking beaches aren’t too far!

Recommended Hotels in Kihei: Maui Coast Hotel | Nona Lani Cottages | Maui Beach Vacation Club (condo rentals)

Wailea is known for its massive five star resort destinations, which often come with a hefty price tag. However, like Kihei, the area is much more laid-back than lively Lahaina and Kaanapali, and thus there’s not as many activities nearby.  If you’re looking for a more quiet and luxurious upscale place to stay, choose Wailea.

Recommended Hotels in Wailea: Hotel Wailea (Adults Only) | Four Seasons Resort | Andaz Maui | Grand Wailea

How to Get Around Maui

Maui is a larger island than you may think. If you plan to drive the Road to Hana , head to Paia , and/or catch the sunrise at Haleakala sans tour, public transport just won’t cut it. Planning on following this Maui itinerary? You’ll undoubtedly need to rent a car.

I like to search  via this site  in order to compare rental companies to see who has the best price.  Feeling a bit extra? Splurge on a convertible or an open-air jeep – this is Hawaii afterall! Treat yo-self!

Search for the cheapest car rentals over here !

Realllllly don’t wanna rent a car? Thankfully, Maui had a pretty decent bus system, but unfortunately, it’s pretty time consuming and doesn’t go everrryyyywhere. Rates are $2 per ride and $4 for a day pass. See this site for bus maps and rules: co.maui.hi.us .

Note that the bus does not go up to Haleakala Volcano (you could take this tour though), and it doesn’t drive out to Hana (opt for a tour similar to this one ), which are both imperative on any Maui itinerary in my opinion.

If you’re strongly against renting a car (which I’m not really sure why not…), please oh please sign up for tours as you’d REALLY be missing out on two absolutely necessary Maui must-do adventures.

Although the public bus system does in fact make the trek out to the airport, you’d be better off getting an airport shuttle at the beginning and tail end of your trip when flying out since the regular bus doesn’t allow any luggage (unless you can hold it on your lap!).

Also, there are transfer companies to get you from the airport ot your hotel/condo/vacation rental, but by the time you pay that twice, you could pay for a rental car for the duration of your 5 days in Maui.

Maui Packing List

When packing for your trip, you wanna make sure you’ve got all the right clothing and gear for everything you’ve planned for your Maui itinerary. Think about the activities you’ll be doing, and prepare for those!

Everyone will need their typical everyday clothing (shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, etc). A few pairs of shoes is a good idea — I recommend bringing a pair of flip flops, sandals, dressy shoes (for a nice dinner out), and sneakers/hiking boots if you’re planning on doing some hiking.

Women’s Packing List:  You’ll obviously need all your favorite beach attire, including bathing suits (buy a few new ones!), beach cover-ups, loose cotton dresses, a cute sun hat, casual and dressy sandals,

Psst: Women — If you’re planning on taking a surf lesson, be sure to pack a bathing suit that stays put and has good support. You don’t wanna fall out if you accidentally wipe out! :p

Men’s Packing List:  Be cool and casual during the day (my husband loves short sleeve button downs for a more polished look), but be sure to check the dress code for any restaurants you really wanna go to. Men might need pants and dress shoes to enter.

Other Miscellaneous Items to Pack for Maui

  • Polarized sunglasses  (better for blocking out the harsh UV rays)
  • Beach bag   and/or  backpack : make sure it’s large enough to fit a beach towel or two!
  • Hat/s : The sun is strong here! I love taking a  wide-brimmed sun hat  for the beach and a  fun trucker hat  when hiking.
  • If your Maui itinerary includes a bunch of snorkeling around the island, you’ll probably save some cash by bringing your own  mask and snorkel .
  • A  waterproof kindle  or other e-reader for reading at the beach (I’d be worried a physical book may accidentally get wet!)
  • Your hotel may give you towels, but we love traveling with a  sand-free beach mat
  • Reusable water bottle : better for the environment and a must for hiking!
  • Reef Safe sunscreen  (always use when in the water, as other sunscreen is harmful to marine life): We love  ThinkSport  (make sure the bottles are less than 3.4 ounces if you’re bringing them in your carryon)! Don’t forget about  SLP lip balm  as well!
  • Aloe Vera Gel : always have some handy in case you get a sunburn; aloe will give the burn some much-needed relief
  • Dramamine : This will help with motion sickness if you’re planning to do a snorkeling or boat tour (the waves can get rough!).
  • Underwater camera :  All my underwater photography tips and gear here . I’d check out an  underwater phone case , too.
  • Portable battery charger : Charge your phone on the go and never run out of a charge
  • Noise-cancelling headphones : Great for both the plane and the beach! I’m obsessed with my  AirPods  and Noah loves his  Bose Quiet Comforts .
  • Tote bag : Plastic bags are banned in Maui, so bring your own for shopping! I love  this collapsible reusable tote bag  (hardly takes up any room in your suitcase).

An Important Note on Hawaiian Wildlife

One of the big draws of any trip to Maui ( and Hawaii in general ) is the possibility to see wildlife. Think plenty of tropical fish (including Hawaii’s state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua’a – and yes, that’s how it spelled), sea turtles (both in water and resting on land), dolphins and humpback whales jumping in and out of water, and wild boar (be careful when driving on remote roads).

PLEASE keep wildlife WILD. NEVER attempt to chase/touch/pet/feed ANY wild animal. This can potentially do harm to these beloved creatures, and possibly cause unnecessary distress.

sea turtle in maui

Always stay at least 100 feet from any animal you encounter, and when snorkeling, NEVER touch/chase sea turtles (it’s actually a crime, and you can get a hefty fine) or any other fish/dolphin you may come across. Get your photos, but NEVER do it at the expense of the animals.

And while we’re on that note – shy away from plastic straws and other unnecessary plastic when on the island (it’ll most likely end up in the ocean). If you buy a pack of drinks (whether it be POG juice, beers, etc), always make sure to cut up that silly plastic holding all the drinks together. Thank you. 🙂

And now what you’ve been waiting for, a complete 5 day Maui itinerary!

Maui Itinerary: The Perfect 5 Days in Maui

Day 0: fly into hawaii.

Headed to Hawaii and looking for the best Maui helicopter tour? From rushing waterfalls and cascading cliffs to misty mountains and turquoise waters, nothing beats a morning soaring over Maui.

As noted above, I 98% have the best luck scoring “cheap” flights to Hawaii using either Skyscanner or Google Flights . “Cheap” is in quotes because I can never seem to find any flights below $400 for our travel dates, but that’s probably because we either go during a holiday weekend and/or don’t have the option to travel mid-week.

I’ve seen offers for as low as $300ish from LAX or SFO, so if you’ve got more flexibility, you may just get lucky! I also heard that Southwest has a new flight route from SFO to the Hawaiian Islands, so be sure to check that out as well!

Sleep : Lahaina or Kaanapali

Important Note : Many of the mornings on this Maui itinerary start in the early AM. While I highly suggest you experience the restaurant nightlife, I also recommend getting a good night’s sleep each and every night. And with the Hawaiian sun beaming down on you all day, I have a feeling that falling asleep each night won’t be a problem.

Day 1: Sunrise at Haleakala Crater, then Beach Time

On our first official full day in Maui, we’re waking up at 2am! Yup, you read that right – 2 o’clock in the morning, my friends. Sure, the super early morning wake up call won’t be much fun, but trust me, sunrise at Haleakala is worth it . And then some.

Imagine watching the sunrise above clouds from an active volcano. Mystical. Intoxifying. Other-wordly. Exactly my point . Haleakala does in fact mean “house of the sun”, so you can be positive that view will be worth waking your butt up for.

Keep reading for the perfect 5 days in Maui, which will cover everything from sunrise at Maui’s famous volcano, snorkeling with sea turtles, a drive down the famed (and for good reason) Road to Hana, and more shave ice than you ever thought possible.

Why sunrise on the first day? Depending on where you’re coming from, you’ll most likely have a case of major jet lag. Use this to your advantage! If you’re flying in from the East Coast USA, 2am will actually feel more like 8am. Not so terrible now, am I right?

Keep reading for the perfect 5 days in Maui, which will cover everything from sunrise at Maui’s famous volcano, snorkeling with sea turtles, a drive down the famed (and for good reason) Road to Hana, and more shave ice than you ever thought possible.

Sunrise at the Haleakala summit is super popular, so arrive at least 30 minutes before sunrise. (Check exact sunrise times here – bottom of page, but know that the sun rises between 5:30am – 7am depending on the time of year.) You’ll have to drive the winding 38 mile Crater Road in the dark, so plan to leave even earlier than you think.

Keep reading for the perfect 5 days in Maui, which will cover everything from sunrise at Maui’s famous volcano, snorkeling with sea turtles, a drive down the famed (and for good reason) Road to Hana, and more shave ice than you ever thought possible.

Note that since sunrise at Haleakala has become so incredibly popular, you now need to make reservations in advance. Individual spots can fill up quickly since there are only 150 parking spaces available. Make reservations here or take the easy way out and book with a certified tour operator (who takes care of your transportation to and from the summit as well as any documentation/advanced reservation requirements).

And once sunrise hits, don’t leave right away! You’ll want to hang around the summit and Haleakala Visitors Center in order to get some great photos – the colors of the valley become more vibrant about 15-20 minutes afterwards. If you decided to make the grueling long drive yourself, grab some hot cocoa from Kula Lodge before you leave the area.

Word of advice: Bring Warm Clothes. Yes, it’s Maui, but the temperature drops about 3º for every 1000 feet of elevation, meaning it’ll be about 30º colder than at sea level from where most people watch the sunrise. I didn’t bundle up enough and I was freezing my butt off.

Take a scarf, alllll the sweatshirts you brought with you, your hotel blanket if you’re feeling a bit extra, and layer, layer, layer. You’ll thank me later when you’re standing there comfortably watching the sunrise at 9,740 feet.

Spend the rest of the afternoon taking it easy and relaxing at the beach, be it Kihei, Kaanapali, Wailea, etc. No matter where you’re staying on the island you’ll find sandy spots and ocean waves nearby.

If you want something low-key to do at night, book yourself on a sunset catamaran dinner cruise . Truuuust me, that Maui sunset is like no else, especially from the water. And how cool would it be to see the sunrise and the sunset in the same day?

Sleep: Lahaina or Kaanapali

Day 2: Lahaina and North Maui

Since you’re probably utterly exhausted from yesterday’s early morning wake up call, take the morning to sleep in (only a little bit) and plan to spend the day around Lahaina and the areas nearbyi. If you’re staying in Kaanapali or Lahaina you won’t have very far to go today for all of the activities listed below:

Keep reading for the perfect 5 days in Maui, which will cover everything from sunrise at Maui’s famous volcano, snorkeling with sea turtles, a drive down the famed (and for good reason) Road to Hana, and more shave ice than you ever thought possible.

1. Short Road Trip Up North: If you’re tired of the beach (say what?!) and up for a mini roadie, jump in the car and head to Napili Bay, Nakalele Blowhole, and Makaluapuna Point. Napili Bay is a super popular spot for snorkeling with the Green Hawaiian Sea Turtles, and you won’t want to miss breakfast at the open-aired Gazebo Restaurant (get the fried rice and white chocolate macadamia nut pancakes – just do it).

2. Get Your Snorkel On: The snorkeling at Black Rock in Kaanapali (right in front of the Sheraton and Kaanapali Beach Hotel) is A++, so you don’t need to go super far to swim around with the fish and turtles! Mornings tend to be easier since the waves and trades aren’t as high yet.

Note that the beach can be somewhat crowded and you’ll be sharing the waters with lots of other beach goers, so the water can appear a bit dark and dirty (from everyone kicked the sand on the ocean floor below).

If you want that crystal clear water you’re probably dreaming about, head north to Kapalua and/or Honolua Bay , which both feature tide-less swimming holes perfect for splashing around (and snorkeling) during the summer, and great surf watch if the waves are too rough (usually in winter).

And if you want to ensure some top-notch snorkeling today, take a day trip from Lahaina to Lanai or, as mentioned before, crystal clear Honolua Bay .

3. Hang in Lahaina: Promise me you won’t miss Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice (kinda an institution around these parts with some of the best shave ice on the island), shopping at Whalers Village, the huuuuge banyan tree, Hula pie and fish tacos at Dukes (go on an empty stomach — it’s all absolutely to-die for), and some fresh acai at Baya Bowls.

We also enjoyed some fresh fruit juice at Olowalu Juice Stand a few minutes south.

4. Luau in Lahaina: It’s impossible to travel all the way to Hawaii without experiencing a traditional luau first hand.  With all the music, exotic dancing, and delicious FOOD , this is surely a night not to be missed.

And thankfully, there’s two fantastic options right in the heart of Lahaina: 1. The Feast at Lele and 2. The Old Lahaina Luau .

feast at lele maui

We ultimately chose the Feast at Lele for a few reasons: the food is brought out individually (meaning no buffet), private comfy tables vs. benched seating with those you don’t know, and there’s a fire knife dance. Yup, it was just as energetic and vigorous at it sounds.

But no matter which luau you choose, be sure to make reservations super early on when planning. They both book up quite fast, and the earlier you book a spot, the better a table you’ll get (closer to the performances). Book Feast at Lele here , and Old Lahaina Luau here .

Day 3: Snorkel at Molokini and Turtle Town

Early morning wake-up #2 – but don’t worry, today’s another epic day. If you thought the snorkeling at Black Rock was top notch, just waaaaait until you get in the waters at Molokini and Turtle Town. Psst – they don’t call it Turtle Town for ‘nothin!

snorkeling at molokini crater maui hawaii

Today you’ll need to book a snorkeling tour since there’s no possible way to hit up these snorkel spots yourself, well, unless you can afford to charter your own boat ($$$$$).

Choose a tour like this one that includes both breakfast and lunch (BBQ on a boat, anyone?), gets you to the snorkel spots before the masses of other tourists arrive, and includes top-notch snorkeling equipment. Yup, that’s why we’re getting our butts up at 6am! Book tour to Molokini and Turtle Town here

Molokini : Ever thought you’d be snorkeling inside of a sunken Hawaiian volcano? Yup, that was my first thought when I learned more about Molokini. Known for its fabulous underwater life and visibility of up to 150 feet, this crescent-shaped partially submerged volcanic crater (from 230,000 years ago!!!) is one of Maui’s prime snorkeling hot spots.

snorkeling at molokini crater maui

And that it was. Once I eased into the water, I had a super hard time focusing; there was just SO much to see. On our particular tour we encountered pinktail durgons, black triggerfish, ornate butterfly fish, red pencil urchins, yellow tangs, trumpetfish, coronet fish, a kaleidoscope of coral along the ocean’s bottom, and more unidentifiable (by me) sea creatures.

sea turtle in maui

Told you I didn’t want to return back to the boat. And with over 250 species of endemic fish and marine life, I can guarantee you’ll see a whole bunch.

If you’re lucky, you’ll also see picasso triggerfish (also known as the humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa in Hawaiian – try saying that name correctly), which is Hawaii’s state fish, manta rays, and moray eels.

maui bus trip planner

Turtle Town : Ahhhhh – sorry, I have a hard time containing my excitement when I even think about swimming with the turtles (known as honus in Hawaii). There’s just something so majestic about these (larger-than-you-realize but) graceful creatures swimming below the surface.

maui bus trip planner

And when I visited, I found it absolutely crazy how incredibly close the sea turtles came near me.  In more instances than one, I had to swim away in fear that I would accidentally touch it’s fin or shell (a huge no-no in Hawaii).

Note that it’s ILLEGAL to touch a honu; these Hawaiian green sea turtles are federally protected and it’s harmful (and ILLEGAL) to touch, feed, or harass them. Just don’t do it. For the sake of the sea turtles. Keep your distance as much as possible.

turtle town maui

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see a turtle right away. Sea turtles hide in caves or under big rocks, and sometimes just sit in the sand on the bottom for periods of time. Basically, they are not always visible at first, and you must patiently wait for them to come up for air (which they need to do since they don’t breathe underwater).

Look all around you: below, in front, behind, etc… you never know when they will come up and surprise you.  Feast your eyes on the seafloor too much, and you may see a shark (which may be a good or bad thing depending on your anxiety levels…)

Book tour to Molokini and Turtle Town here

It’s a good idea to note that the waters (at both snorkel sites) are at their calmest during early morning hours, so if a tour doesn’t start until 9am or later, that’s a bad sign. You should essentially get picked up between 6-7am-ish to ensure prime snorkeling conditions.

sea turtle in maui

If you’re wondering what equipment I used to take these underwater photos, all that info can be found right here (along with some tips on underwater photography). It’s not as easy as it looks, trust me!

And sometimes it’s better to just relax and enjoy the experience. Yes, I say take a whole bunch of photos, but remember to put the camera down and be one with the fish as well. 🙂

Since the tour starts early, you’ll have the rest of the day to either continue exploring Lahaina or rest up at the beach. Consider eating at Monkey Pod Kitchen for a fantastic view, Ono Tacos for a food truck lunch or dinner, or Sale Pepe for some intoxifying Italian food.

Day 4: Maui from Above and Paia Town

Morning: Helicopter tour

What’s better than a helicopter ride over Maui? Start your morning wanderings by booking yourself the West Maui and Molokai tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters . Not only will you be utterly amazed at all the wowness below you from 1000’s of feet, but you’ll actually learn a lot about the island too!

When soothing helicopter-esque music wasn’t playing out of our headphones, our pilot was answering all our crazy island questions and teaching us all-things Maui. On the helicopter tour you’ll see misty mountains, towering waterfalls, coral reefs from above (an absolutely spectacular thing), and even have the chance to spot whales and manta ray from afar.

Worried about nausea and possible sickness? No need to fret – the entire ride was super smooth and pleasant. Thankfully all of the pilots are super A++++ and the company utilizes the latest safety techniques and procedures.

Headed to Hawaii and looking for the best Maui helicopter tour? From rushing waterfalls and cascading cliffs to misty mountains and turquoise waters, nothing beats a morning soaring over Maui.

Soaring over Maui in a helicopter is one of my favorite Hawaii experiences to date! I mean, just look at these photos.

Visiting a few islands and not sure which to plan your heli adventure on? Check out our heli experience in Kauai (loads of pretty pictures) to help make up your mind! Both are worthy, but there’s nothing like soaring over the Na Pali coastline.

Headed to Hawaii and looking for the best Maui helicopter tour? From rushing waterfalls and cascading cliffs to misty mountains and turquoise waters, nothing beats a morning soaring over Maui.

Top Tips: Be sure to wear dark colors during the duration of your helicopter tour, as black will have the least reflection on the glass windows. Wear light colors and you’re risking horrible glares and reflections, making excellent photography downright impossible.

Be courteous to those on your helicopter tour and just wear all black (at least on top), and you’ll keep the nasty glares (from people and the helicopter window) at bay.

If you’re like me and can’t envision yourself wearing black the rest of the day, keep a change of clothes in your rental car and plan to swap into your true summer attire afterwards.

Afternoon: Wander around Paia and Hit Up the Beach Once More

The helicopter tour starts at the airport, so why not stick around the area and explore Paia , a super laid back, surfer hippie town roughly 15 minutes away.

Here you’ll find colorful murals and a not-to-miss surfboard fence (located on Baldwin Ave), a bunch of cute boutique shops (my favorites being To the Moon and Back for jewelry, and Alice in Hulaland for random , and plenty of hip acai and smoothie spots.

Need some coffee? Pick up a to-go cup at the absolute cutest greenery-filled shop in the area, Paia Bay Coffee Company.

Looking for a relaxing outdoor spot for lunch after the helicopter tour? Head to Paia Inn Cafe and get some avocado toast, cold-pressed juices, and the cardamom french toast and eat on the patio. Open from 8:00am-1:00pm daily.

You may want to make a reservation – seating is limited and this place is popular (you’ll see)! And if you can’t score a reservation or the place just happens to be closed for a private event (which it was when we were there), hop across the street to the Paia Fish Market Restaurant for some fresh fish tacos.

If you’re sick of wandering around town (but really, it’s just soooo cute and artsy), head back to the beach! Luckily this area has quite a few of them! Don’t miss Ho’okipa Beach Park (there’s Hawaiian sea turtles over here!), Baldwin Beach, and Lha Bab Peace Stupa!

Don’t mind making a short detour? Drive 20 minutes south of the airport to Wow Wow Lemonade for you guessed it – lemonade!

Make your first official fresh fish dinner in Maui a great one, at no other than the famous Mama’s Fish House. You’ll want to make a reservation in advance, as this place is exceptionally popular (and for good reason).

Sleep:   Pain Inn in Paia

If you want to get a short head start on the next day’s activities (the infamous but tiring Road to Hana), you may want to consider sleeping in Paia the night before. You’ll save about an hour’s worth of driving which may help you stay ahead of the crowds on the drive. Up to you!

Check out some hotels in Paia here.

Bed early because tomorrow’s a long and exhausting day!

Day 5: The Road to Hana

maui bus trip planner

The Road to Hana is one you will never forget and an absolute highlight on any Maui itinerary. The drive is not for the fearful though- with 52 miles of winding roads (complete with plenty of one lane bridges, hairpin turns, and rocky cliffs), you’ll want to make sure you get plenty of rest the night before!

Highway 36 (known as the Road to Hana) is one of the most famous highways in the entire country and takes about 3 hours, but you’ll want to carve out an entire day on your Maui itinerary to linger around. And trust me, there are lots of stops on the road you just won’t want to miss! Black sand beach, anyone?!

Remember, if you’re staying in Lahaina or Paia or anywhere else other than where you end up on your drive, you’ll need to make your way back to where you came from. And that means even more driving time. Be sure to back some road trip snacks, read my Road to Hana guide in advance (sure to help while on the road).

Wonderful article! We will be traveling to Maui May 2021. I appreciate all the information you shared. Thank you Jess!

Good itinerary. What I would like to see from all these itineraries are a cost. Throw in what your total cost was. And if there are varying options, go cost per activity after all fees/taxes so we can add up our choices. Not sure why everyone is afraid to put a number on all of this when it is the most important part to travel for the majority of visitors. Let's care about financial wealth as we enjoy travel.

Jessica, Remember Hawaii is part of the United States. We are referred to as the mainland. I recommend doing lunch at Mama's fish house. Don't forget the winery on the island.

Disagree about such a busy itinerary, renting a car and the benefits of Kihei.

Save the hustle and bustle for Oahu The advantage of staying in Kaanapali (or Napili, etc.) or for the honeymooners or high rollers, Wailea, is that most of the hotels/condos and restaurants are right on the beach ⛱ and one can walk. No need for a car. Or take the shuttle from Kaanapali to Lanai. Consequently, the emphasis is appropriately on the beach and relaxarion, which is why one visits Maui

Pacific overwater sunsets arre Maui's nightly show and should not be missed.

Whale watching boat toura should be included with any trip to Maui. Also "hiking" in the Iron Needle Valley should be included.

Kihei is not recommended. It is where Maui's locals live. Places are not walking distance like Kaanapali or Wailea, but located in mini mall shopping centers. Here a car is necessary.

Kihei ocean front dining is more like dining off Las Vegas Blvd, filled wirh cars, and the ocean in the distance. Not worth it, unless staying for 3 weeks.

There are lots of different inns, hotels and bnb's in Hana.. The prices are much much less than Travasa.

Ohhh so good to know! Do you have any recommendations?!

April 10, 2021 at 8:40 am

I'm going for my 40th in July. Not the best time, but I've lived in LA for 14 years and still haven't been!! So excited, but totally overwhelmed at all the things to do and what to book. There's going to be 6 of us and none of us like being in touristy hotels or areas, so trying to find somewhere that isn't a line of hotels and sunbathers. What's the best spot on Maui for that? We're trying to decide whether to to a week in Maui or Oahu and then we'll do a week in Kahaui.

Thanks so much for all this info. This is the first Hawaii blog post I've actually read in full! Super informative and well written. Thank you.

Oh, and where is that last picture? – of the trees with the steps through

' src=

May 24, 2021 at 7:29 pm

All of those mon turisty spots have disappeared. My local favorite spot is full of people and it used to be my private sanctuary. Just be happy to be here. If locals must share everything with tourists, you will have to share with other tourists as well. The great news is that it will be beautiful no matter what!

May 24, 2021 at 8:18 pm

There's not tons of non touristy spots anymore, but I'd have to say Paia if you like more of a relaxed atmosphere.

In regards to the last photo with the trees and steps, that's on the Pipiwai Trail on the Road to Hana!

Have a wonderful trip! The islands are gorgeous!

If you drive to Hana… Be respectful and pull over and let locals pass on narrow roadway. We maybe sightseeing as visitors but locals are commuting to jobs, food market or school. Also, don't venture off of trails, Hawai'i is home to many endangered species, and you may inadvertently step on a few. Make sure your suntan lotion is not a pollutant. Don't visit if not VACCINATED….Hawaiians still remember the foreign diseases that decimated local populations in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. Enjoy, Maui No Ka Oi (Maui is the BEST).

Thank you for this. Masks are a mandate, so definitely add that to your packing list. Maui is isolated and does not have healthcare or infastructure like the mainland. Please wear your mask, vaccinated or not, please dont bring your politics with you. Be kind to locals, its been a rough year, and its not as easy for us to leave as it is for most to get here, so no need complain! Things are not normal here for us yet, so please pack plenty of patience and Aloha, and you will experience that in return! Mahalo!

100% agree with everything you said! We will definitely be bringing (and of course wearing) our masks next time we visit!

Hi! I was wondering if i need a covid negative test from San Fransisco to Maui/Oahu and in between Maui-Oahu Thanks!

June 10, 2021 at 10:51 am

Yes, you need a negative COVID test to enter Hawaii from anywhere. At this time, you don't need a test to go to Oahu from Maui, but you need one from Oahu to Maui. Regardless, I highly recommend keeping on top of things as procedures have been changing all the time in regards to traveling to Hawaii. Have fun!

Another "must" on the way back to your hotel from the "sunrise at the crater" is surfing goats dairy, really good cheese, and Ocean distillery. Great Vodkas and views as well.

How to get around Maui with or without a car: travel on island time

Traveling around Maui is best with a car, but there are several other transportation options to consider too © darekm101 / Getty Images

Ahh, Maui . So lush, so welcoming, so... full of cars. Yep, the Valley Isle is only 48 miles long and 26 miles wide, but it is hard to explore without a car.

Public transportation sticks to major towns, so you can’t get to Haleakalā National Park , the Road to Hana or ‘Iao Valley State Monument unless you have your own wheels or take a guided tour. Roads are often narrow and tight, and they are subject to frequent rains and winds, so cycling is challenging too.

The good news? If you don’t mind sticking to one small town or resort area, you can get around on foot or bicycle, or by riding the Maui Bus. Taxis and rideshare options work well for local travel too.

Top tip: as the local bumper stickers say, “Practice Aloha.” Remember that you are on island time. Slow down and dial it down a notch when traveling around the island. If you can't find parking at a waterfall on the Road to Hana, that’s okay. There’s another one down the road.

Car is the best option if you want to explore the island

The island of Maui is divided into five regions, each anchored by a town or small city. If you plan to travel beyond your region, you will want to rent a car. And unless you take a guided tour, you will need a car to visit Haleakalā National Park and to explore the Road to Hana (we recommend sticking to a guided tour for the latter to cut down on traffic congestion that has plagued the area for years).

There are nine international rental car companies at Kahului International Airport . A handful have offices in Ka‘anapali or inside different resorts. For a hybrid, electric, or biodiesel vehicle, consider Bio-Beetle in Kahului. Discount cars and motorcycle rental offices are scattered across the island. For an older car at a lower price, Kihei Rent a Car is a great choice. It offers complimentary rides to and from the airport.

The car rental market has always been tight and expensive on Maui, but the problem has been exacerbated after rental car companies sold off much of their inventory during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prices have dropped, but book your car a month or two in advance to ensure you’ll have one on arrival. A newer option is carsharing, which is available on Maui through Turo . The company has a wide variety of cars available. Mileage, pick-up instructions, and other details vary by host.

A red car parked at a beach with a surfboard on its roof

Look for road restrictions on your vehicle, especially if you plan to drive to a remote beach. Some of these can only be reached by a dirt road, and driving on unpaved surfaces may be prohibited. The tricky drive on the partially paved and sometimes rough Pi‘ilani Hwy through the Kaupo area may also be off-limits. Towing fees may be very high if you get stuck here.

Two-lane highways link most towns. Some may be narrow and subject to congestion at unexpected times. The main roads through downtown Lahaina and sprawling Kihei can also get very congested. Use the bypass outside of Lahaina or the Pi‘ialani Hwy in Kihei if you want to travel more quickly in either city.

It’s pretty easy to find street parking in Kihei and Kahului. Downtown Lahaina has street parking and a mix of paid and public lots. Check all signage about time limits and required payments.

Tip for beach parking: Resorts must provide public access to the beaches that front their property, Look for free parking lots near the public access points. In Ka‘anapali and Wailea these lots may be small and slightly hard to spot, but they are there.

It's easy to get around on foot in towns and resorts

In most coastal towns and resort areas, it is easy to get around by foot. Sidewalks navigate the historic core of Lahaina, while paved coastal trails link resorts and condo communities in Ka‘anapali, Kapalua and Wailea. The downtown areas of Pa‘ia and Makawao in the Upcountry are also pedestrian friendly. Sidewalks border much of S Kihei Rd, which is the main drag through Kihei, but the road stretches for almost 6 miles. The Maui Bus runs along S Kihei Rd, with frequent stops, so you could hop a ride if the walk is long.

A bus service links major towns

The Maui Bus runs within and between major towns, but it does not travel to out-of-the-way locations like Haleakalā National Park and Hana. The public bus system is managed by Roberts Hawaii and currently operates 14 routes. The main routes run every hour daily, roughly 7am to 8pm. The Upcountry Islander and the Haiku Islander stop at Kahului International Airport.

A one-way fare is $2, and a daily pass is $5. Children 5 years of age and younger travel free with a paying adult. Buses come with front-load bike racks.

A free shuttle operates between resorts in Ka'anapali

The Ka‘anapali Trolley is a free shuttle that loops between Whalers Village, the Ka‘anapali Golf Course, the Fairway Shops and several resorts every 20 to 30 minutes in Ka‘anapali. It is open to the public and operates between 10am and 10pm, with a lunch and dinner break for the driver. Larger resorts may provide shuttle service to guests around the resort area and to nearby towns.

Taxis and rideshares run in main towns

Taxis operate in the main towns and tourist areas, but they are easiest to find at the airport and outside larger resorts. You may need to call a dispatcher to find one in most towns and cities. Uber and Lyft are also available.

Two women ride bicycles along a paved path that runs parallel to the sea

Cycling between towns is difficult

Traveling from town to town by bike will be challenging. Major roads are often very narrow, winds can be strong, traffic can be heavy and there are many hills and mountains. Sounds fun, right? Getting around a town by bike is feasible, but there aren't many bike lanes. Kihei is an exception. The city is mostly level, and there are bike lanes on its two main roads, S Kihei Rd and Pi‘ialani Hwy.

Bikes are available for rent in resort areas and in most major towns. Look for them at specialty bike shops or at stores that rent outdoor and recreational gear. Some hostels, guesthouses and B&Bs may also offer bikes for rent or loan. A handful of rental shops offer e-bikes.

There are twice-daily flights across the island

Mokulele Airlines flies twice daily between Kapalua International Airport and tiny Hana Airport in East Maui. This option cuts a two-hour drive to twenty minutes.

Guided tours go to various destinations and cut down on congestion

If you want to experience the Road to Hana or the sunrise at Haleakala and you don’t have a car to explore Maui, consider a guided trip. Roberts Hawaii , which also operates the county-run Maui Bus, offers trips to Haleakalā National Park, the Road to Hana and the Upcountry. Valley Isle Excursions leads Haleakalā and the Road to Hana trips. Polynesian Adventure Tours hit Haleakalā, the Road to Hana, the ‘Iao Valley and small towns in the Upcountry. Tours also have the added benefits of reducing traffic congestion and providing local insight from knowledgeable guides.

A shot from the back of a ferry with several passengers watching a volcanic island disappear in the distance

Ferries go to Lana‘i

The Expeditions Ferry links Lahaina Harbor with Manele Bay Harbor in Lana‘i, which is part of Maui County. The one-way ride is one hour, and the boat leaves several times daily. You may see spinner dolphins year-round and migrating humpback whales in winter. There is no ferry to Moloka‘i.

Most transportation in Maui is accessible

All vehicles used on Maui Bus routes are ADA accessible. Buses have ramps available and a sitting area in front. One-way fare for passengers with disabilities is $1. Some major rental car agencies rent hand-controlled vehicles and vans with wheelchair lifts. Another option is renting a wheelchair-accessible van through Wheelers of Hawaii or through Wheelchair Getaways .

Bring your disability parking placard from home. Hang it from your vehicle's rearview mirror when using designated disabled parking spaces.

Several tour companies run guided trips to Haleakalā National Park in ADA vans. Make a reservation at least four days in advance to secure a spot. Try Roberts Hawaii or Valley Isle Excursions. It is harder to find ADA-compliant guided tours to Hana because the stops on the Road to Hana are not easily accessible and some ADA vans cannot manage the narrow and twisty road itself.

The Ultimate 7 Day Maui Itinerary | Plan the Perfect Maui Vacation

Planning a trip to Maui, Hawaii and looking for a solid Maui 7 day itinerary …!? Well, look no further, because I’ve put together the ultimate guide to a Maui trip. You’ll find the best things to do, where to stay, food recommendations, the best day trips, and so much more!

With its scenic coastal roads, dozens of beautiful beaches, wondrous luxury resorts, gorgeous national parks, and pristine marine biodiversity – there truly is a little something for everybody on the island!

I just recently returned from an amazing weeklong stay, and it really was an unbelievable vacation that I’ll never forget. I’m completely hooked on Hawaii travel now, and can’t wait to return to paradise in the near future!

While it may be difficult at first to decide which island to visit in Hawaii, I’d say you’ll be more than happy with your decision to make it down to Maui! It’s a paradise for sun-seekers, road trippers, aquatic lovers, food fanatics, and lots of family fun. I’m sure you’ll find this “7 days in Maui itinerary” helpful. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions you’ve got!

Maui Itinerary

The Best Time to Plan a Trip to Maui

One of the best parts about a Hawaii vacation is that you can pretty much go any time of the year! For Maui weather, you can simply expect the beautifully warm tropical climate, and it’s pretty consistent all year long with daytime highs around 75-85°F (23-29°C). Bear in mind that Maui does receive a lot of rainfall especially during the winter months of December, January and February. This can bring some cloudy days and heavy showers in certain areas…

“Rain showers are typically short and are quickly followed by more sunshine, and, if you’re lucky, rainbows. Rainbows are always said to be a sign of good luck in the islands, meaning you’ll return one day if you spot one.” – Hawaii Travel Guide

Do you need a Rental Car in Maui?

To get the full Maui experience, you’ll 100% want to rent your own vehicle! I found the rates to be surprisingly affordable for Hawaii (I was expecting much worse), and it’ll provide for a lot more freedom. Besides, if you add up the costs of taxis and shuttle costs to the island’s main highlights, it’ll honestly be more than the entire car rental fee.

While gas prices on the island are expensive (it’s an island in the pacific ocean after all), it’s such an amazing feeling to drive along around these gorgeous highways at your own pace. Maui is the second biggest island in Hawaii, so there’s definitely a lot to explore, and some fun roads to drive along!

While it can be easy to just sit back and chill at the resort pool the entire trip (which I’ll admit I did quite a bit during my recent Maui vacation), I’d strongly recommend getting out and exploring everything the island has to offer!

Where To Stay on Maui Island

There really are dozens of incredible accommodation options to choose from on Maui Island, and it really just depends on where you want to be located, the price you’re willing to spend, and what you want to be close to.

I’d personally recommend staying on the west coast of Maui , which consists of the major hotel/ resort hubs of Kapalua , Kaanapali , and Lahaina. This is easily the most scenic region on the island and is packed with tons of pristine beaches, coves, restaurants, and resorts. While it’s about a forty-minute drive from the airport, it’s the most lively and beautiful area and should be included in any Hawaii trip planner!

There are a lot of different resorts and condos down from Kihei all the way down to Wailea, but I wasn’t impressed by the beaches that much. While they are a bit more centrally located, I’d definitely recommend staying up in Kapalua or in the Lahaina area.  While you’ll need to do some research and find the best place for you, here are a couple of solid options that would provide for comfortable and enjoyable stays!

My main recommendation for accommodation in Maui is by booking a VRBO, as there are tons of incredible options available and can be more affordable than the expensive hotels. Here are are a few of my personal favorites:

  • Luxury OCEAN FRONT Condo Truly 5 Star
  • Stunning Views From Only Double Lanai Penthouse Unit
  • Direct Beachfront Spectacular Ocean Views Newly Renovated!!

Ritz Carlton Kapalua: The Best Luxury Resort

During our most recent trip to Maui, we stayed at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua for five nights on Maui, and it was absolutely spectacular! Staying at the Ritz really turned our trip to Maui into an “ultimate vacation” experience, and I was blown away by everything the resort has to offer.

From its unbeatable customer service (seriously, all the staff are super friendly), luxuriously comfortable rooms, an award-winning full-service spa, relaxing multi-tiered pool, fantastic dining options, beach access, helpful concierge desk, and lots more – it’s essentially got everything you look for in a 5* Resort in paradise!

While it may be one of the more expensive options in the area, the Ritz Carlton will provide an unforgettable stay for your Maui vacation, and is absolutely worth every penny!

Napili Sunset Beach Front Resort: Best Budget Resort

If you’re looking for a more affordable option in the area, then book yourself into one of the beautiful apartments at the Napili Sunset Beach Front Resort .

The units are clean and kitted out with everything you may need. Fully equipped kitchens, free wi-fi, an outdoor pool, and quick access to some of the best sandy beaches in the Kapalua area – this place would be a fantastic budget option!

You are just a few steps away from the Napili Bay beach, you can’t find a better location at a better price. Enjoy long days on the beach or get active with the water sports and snorkeling activities offered by the hotel.

The service is exceptional and it’s a top-pick for Maui,  also rated for the best value in Lahaina, so ideal for couples, families & solo travelers who are looking to save a bit of money!

Maui Vacation Planner & Travel Accommodation Tips

One important thing to note about staying on the west side of Maui is that it is a considerable distance away from the starting point from the Road To Hana (one of the island’s major tourist attractions).

Some people recommend to split up the entire journey into two days and actually stay out there at the Travaasa Hana Resort (which you’ll want to book well in advance as it sells out frequently). While it’s definitely possible to do the Road to Hana in one day, it’ll be a LONG day on the windy roads if you do the self-drive option, and it’s just something to keep in mind.

Depending on how long you have on Maui, it could be nice to break up where you stay. For example, if you’re following this 7-day Maui itinerary, you could choose to do 4 Days in Maui in one area, and 3 days in another.

But without further ado, let’s get started…

Best Places to Stay - Maui Itinerary

Maui Itinerary Day 1: Helicopter Views & Iao Valley State Park

There really is no better way to start your Maui vacation than getting a bird’s eye view of the island. Prepare yourself for a magical experience as you soar over this pristine and unspoiled Hawaiin landscape on a helicopter tour!

Scenic Helicopter Tour - Maui Itinerary

It was one of the highlights of my trip, and I loved how it’ll give you a much better understanding of the sheer size of the island, all the different areas there are to explore, and a full appreciation for the rugged coastlines.

Several different companies offer scenic helicopter tours and lots of different routes. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip with Maverick Helicopters, and doing the Molokai Voyage tour!

I loved flying over TWO islands, and the waterfalls along the tall coastlines of Molokai were incredible to see in person! As well, you’ll get to fly over the resorts on the west coast of Maui, and fly across the channel which I really enjoyed.

Two Island Hawaii Helicopter Experience Over Maui and Molokai : “This Hawaiian helicopter tour lets you explore the beauty and scenery of two Hawaiian Islands on this multi-island expedition. Begin your adventure departing the Kahului Heliport on your way to the world’s largest sea cliffs, located on Molokai, also known as the Friendly Isle.

Molokai’s waterfalls, including Kahiwa Falls are the tallest among all the Hawaiian Islands . Get bird’s-eye views of the remote north shore, Halawa Valley and the vast Molokai fish ponds.  Fly over the Pailolo channel featuring some of the most scenic waters between the islands including Elephant Rock.

Over Maui, get intimate views of the western portion of the island including the famous lao Valley State Park, a vegetation-covered lava rainforest.”

Helicopter Flight - Maui Itinerary

Iao Valley State Park

Once you’ve landed back on the ground, it’s only a short drive from the airport to the Iao Valley State Park ! You will have just flown over this stunning green landscape, and now it’s your chance to walk (and swim) through it!

With a short scenic lookout trail, several swimming holes, and being surrounded by tropical gardens – it’s the perfect place to spend a couple of hours escaping from the Maui heat!

It’s also home to one of Maui’s most recognizable landmarks, the 1,200-foot Iao Needle. “This iconic green-mantled rock outcropping overlooks Iao stream and is an ideal attraction for easy hiking and sightseeing.”

After taking a dip in the streams, and learning all about the historical significance, head back to your resort for the rest of the day, as you’ll probably be ready for some rest if you’re experiencing any jet lag!

Iao Valley State Park Maui

Maui Itinerary Day 2: Haleakala National Park [Sunrise or Sunset]

While it may require a rather long drive to reach the summit, it’s absolutely worth it! The Haleakala National Park is home to Maui’s highest peak, and no visitor to Maui should leave without being mesmerized by the views from up there!

“This special place vibrates with stories of ancient and modern Hawaiian culture and protects the bond between the land and its people. The park also cares for endangered species, some of which exist nowhere else. Come visit this special place – renew your spirit amid stark volcanic landscapes and sub-tropical rain forest with an unforgettable hike through the backcountry”

Haleakala National Park - Maui Sunrise

One of the most popular tourist attractions on Maui island is watching the sunrise from Haleakala National Park, but if you decide to do that you’ll need to wake up and be ready to go by around 2-3 A.M!

It’s quite the experience, and comes highly recommended! There are plenty of companies that offer sunrise tours, but I’d just recommend making your own Haleakala Sunrise Reservation, and saving the money for other day tours on the island!

If you decide to sleep in every day of your vacation (which is perfectly acceptable, lol), make sure you still get up there for a visit.

You can take a read through this article the “ Top 10 Things to Do on Haleakala ” for some more information, but I’d definitely recommend taking a hike through the park!  You’ll be amazed at the views, but just bring plenty of SPF as you’ll be in lots of direct sunlight!

While you won’t need ALL day at the national park, I won’t include anything else as I’m sure the drive and hike will take lots of your energy!

Haleakala Crater

Haleakala Crater

Maui Itinerary Day 3: Pool Day & Kaanapali Resort

After two pretty eventful days so far in Maui, spend some time in “vacation mode” and soak up your resort or accommodation amenities!

I’d also recommend taking a drive over to Kaanapali Resort and taking a stroll through there! When I visited I really enjoyed my time down there, but I was also pretty happy that I wasn’t staying at one of the resorts there (as it’s quite busy)!

There are tons of amazing shops, restaurants, and beach bars though, and you also find plenty of beach chairs to rent (if you’re staying at an Airbnb that doesn’t have beach access)!

Just try and take it easy today and relax, because what’s next on the itinerary is going to be a long but amazing day!!

Maui Itinerary Day 4: The Road To Hana

“it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”  ―  ralph waldo emerson,.

Road to Hana - Maui itinerary

The “ Road To Hana ” is a world-famous highway that is carved into the coastlines of Maui, and provides some of Hawaii’s most jaw-dropping oceanfront views! When it comes to scenic coastal road trips, it really doesn’t get much better than the Road to Hana, and it’s become one of the biggest tourist draws to this lush green Hawaiin island!

While the distance traveled on this legendary road is only 52 miles, don’t let that fool you ― this is an all-day adventure, and will require an early start! The journey can take anywhere between two to five hours one-way (depending on how many stops you make), and is filled with narrow one-lane bridges and hairpin turns!

Road To hana - Best Maui Itinerary

“The Hana Highway (HI-360) has 620 curves and 59 bridges. The road leads you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools, and dramatic seascapes. Please keep in mind that you’ll encounter challenging turns and narrow bridges along the way, so it’s important to exercise caution and take your time. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the lovely views, so get an early start and take your time on your drive. While it’s all about the journey, once you reach the beautiful and quiet town of Hana, you’ll see why it’s worth the trip.”

Check out this article by Matador Network titled, “ The ultimate guide to the Road to Hana, Maui ” for some more information and how to plan for the adventure!

The Road to Hana is seriously a MUST-DO while you’re in Maui Hawaii, because you’ll love the journey to Hana, which is considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers!

Maui Itinerary Day 5: Molokini Crater Snorkeling Tour

While there are tons of places around Maui that are great for a quick snorkeling session, there’s no better snorkeling in the area than Molokini Crater! Located just a quick boat ride away in between the islands of Maui and Kahoʻolawe, the Molokini Crater is a crescent-shaped volcanic crater that has unbelievably crystal clear water and fantastic marine life!

If you’re a certified Scuba diver, I’d definitely recommend looking into booking a fun dive here as well!

“It’s world-famous due to the wall and drift dives available. The backside of Molokini drops nearly straight down to 360 feet. The inside reef of Molokini also offers great diving opportunities. We suggest only advanced divers dive the backside of  Molokini , where you’ll likely see many different types of shark, moray eels, many species of tropical fish, manta rays, dolphins, and vibrant reef. Within the crater, search for octopus, moray eels, sharks, and hundreds of exotic fish.”

Check out this Instagram video below to see what I mean about the water!  It’s truly spectacular and definitely worth the snorkeling day-trip!

View this post on Instagram The devil is in the details ? (swipe to see dem, and don’t forget to follow @shangerdanger for more epic underwater imagery) on this day we got to this popular dive site in the afternoon and had to wait for the tour boats to clear out so that we could tie off to a mooring ball. From above and below the blue of the water was the most amazing I had ever seen. I would guess the visibility was over 200ft, but what’s funny is that it’s almost always like that at Molokini Crater. It’s located far from the south coast of Maui and is a protected nature preserve. #hawaii #underwater #boomerang #freediving #molokinicrater #makena #kihei #maui #southshore A post shared by Shangerdanger (shane) (@shangerdanger) on Jul 20, 2019 at 10:07am PDT

Maui Itinerary Day 6: The Aquarium of Hawaii, Maui Brewing Company & Lahaina

Selected as one of the Top 10 Aquariums in the world, no visit would be complete without a visit to Maui Ocean Center!  Head over here in the morning after breakfast, and spend a few hours learning all about Hawaiin marine life! With over 60 different interactive exhibits, shows, naturalist presentations, and cultural activities – there really is a little something for everyone!  It’s open daily from 9 am – 5 pm.

Tickets can be purchased there, but you can save $5 per ADULT ticket if you book in advance online.

Maui Brewing Co

After you’ve had your fix at the aquarium, make the quick 20-minute drive around Maalaea Bay and arrive at the Maui Brewing Co in Kihei for Lunch.  This is Hawaii’s Largest Craft Brewery, and has become a hotspot among tourists and locals!

There’s a full-service restaurant and tasting room where you can take a 45-minute guided  Brewery Tour  for $15, which I personally loved! You’ll get to learn all about the history of the company, sample lots of beer, and learn about the brewing process (and what makes MBC unique).

The burgers at the restaurant are delicious, but the main reason to come here would be to try out a beer flight or two (as the beer is incredible).

If you’re making decent time, you could also drive along the Kihei Road down towards The Shops at Wailea! It’s a nice cruise along the beach, and it’s the other main touristy area filled with vacation condos and luxury resorts.

Exploring & Sunset Dining in Lahaina

Once you’re done with your time in Kihei, make the short drive back to the west coast and stop in Lahaina! It’s my favorite major city on Maui, and a fantastic place to just walk around, watch surfers, enjoy a sunset, and have some dinner/ nightlife.

I’d strongly recommend enjoying a meal at the rooftop bar at  Fleetwoods on Front Street !  We had dinner there one night (which was incredible), and the vibe really was awesome up there. Beautiful ocean breeze, sounds of waves hitting the beach, and beautiful sunset views of Lanai in the distance!

“Owned by Mick Fleetwood of the popular band Fleetwood Mac, this Front Street staple offers some of the best views possible from its stunning rooftop deck. Not only did they win the 2014 Aipono Gold Award for Best Cocktails on Maui, but they won our vote as well! Grab an ocean-view seat on the roof for happy hour, daily from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and enjoy live entertainment while sipping a specialty cocktail. We recommend the Fleetwood’s Pimm’s Cup with muddled strawberries, mint, and cucumber, Pimm’s No. 1, Grand Marnier, Lemon, Orange Juice and Ginger Beer, or the Starshine with Ocean Vodka, Local Starfruit, Housemade Vanilla & Mint Simple Syrup, Fresno Chile and Li Hing Mui salted rim.” – Lahaina Own

Maui Itinerary Day 7: Relaxing Spa Day & Hawaiin Luau Dinner Show

So it’s the last day of the week your in Maui itinerary, and I personally think you can’t end your vacation without a bit of pampering! Whether you’re looking for just a basic 60-minute massage or a full-day spa package, check out this article for the Top Spas on Maui and find something you think sounds good to you.

During our stay at the Ritz Carlton, I thoroughly enjoyed their 80-minute “Man’s Massage”, and it really set the tone for the rest of the day!

Maui Itinerary

Hawaiin Luau Dinner Show

For your last night in Hawaii, I’d recommend soaking up the culture at an iconic “Hawaiin luau”.  There are tons of different options available, but I’d recommend this one:

Old Lahaina Luau Maui : “Soak up Hawaiian history and culture at the 3-hour Old Lahaina Luau in Maui. Enjoy hula dancing, an oceanfront setting, and fresh island fillets, as well as other traditional dishes. You’ll be greeted with a Hawaiian lei and tropical drink from the bar before settling in for a lively performance against the Maui sunset. More Things to Do & Places to Visit on Maui

While I do think I outlined a pretty amazing Maui itinerary, there really is a lot more to explore on this island! Here are few more epic things you should get up to while on the island!

This is one of the last major towns located towards the beginning of the Road to Hana, and is definitely worth a visit!  It’s got some really great shopping, fun restaurants, a few lively bars, and a top-notch health food store! It’s got a great relaxing surfer vibe, and this is probably where I would lIve if I moved to Maui. I ended up eating at several of the shops in town, and everything was delicious, and this is the perfect place to stop for a classic Hawaiin shaved Ice!

Maui Itinerary - Paia Town

Waihee Ridge Trail

If you’re feeling extra adventurous and looking for a good hike, the Waihee Ridge Trail is particularly awesome!  It starts off with a pretty intense climb, but the views you’ll get of the Maui mountains, as well as the coastline, are well worth it.  I only hiked this for the first mile or so (and then had to circle back since I had forgotten to bring a water bottle and it was super hot), but will definitely be completing the circuit when I make it back to Maui!  You’ll definitely need your own car to get to the start of it though!

Waihee Ridge Trail - Maui Itinerary

Kapalua Coastal Trails

This flat and breezy 1.76-mile walk along the various beaches of Kapalua is an absolute must for people staying in the area! It’ll only take about 30+ minutes or so, but you’ll get some really stunning viewpoints, and might even be able to spot some turtles and dolphins out in the water!  The trail leads from the Ritz Carlton all the way to the scenic Kapalua Bay, a famous place for snorkeling with turtles, and also the location of  Merriman’s Maui – which regularly wins awards for having the best Mai Tai!  If you’re a big fan of hiking though, you could also check out the other hiking trails in Kapalua !  I’ve heard great things about the Mahana Ridge trail, but it just sounded a bit too intense for me on a hot day!

How To Get Here

From the US Mainland

All major US carriers fly into Kahului Airport from a selection of mainland cites.  If you want to begin your island experience before you even land, you can also choose Hawaii’s flagship airline, Hawaiian Airlines .

From Canada

Air Canada and Westjet fly direct, non-stop to Maui from Vancouver, BC.  From other cities, you will most likely connect through Vancouver.

Regardless of where you are coming from, your landing will be breathtaking.  Maui’s nickname is “The Valley Isle,” – so named because the island is basically comprised of two volcanic mountains separated by a flat, uniform isthmus running between them. It’s most common that your flight will approach to land by flying over the isthmus.

This creates an absolutely gorgeous view that will take your breath away. And if that doesn’t do it, the position of the mountains to the prevailing trade winds can create a wind tunnel effect that might bounce the plane around a little upon landing. Don’t worry, that is normal! Either way, it will be an exhilarating landing at the Kahului Airport.

Impress a Local: The Hawaiian word for flight is “lele,” and the Hawaiian word for crazy is “lolo.” A whimsical combination that is usually appropriate for landing in Maui.

Getting Around

maui bus trip planner

The island of Maui is the second largest island of the Hawaiian Island chain… in both area (land mass), where it is second to the “Big Island” of Hawaii, and in population where it is second to Oahu. However, Maui has been number one in popularity since… well, probably ever since the first Polynesian set foot on the island. This enchantment has created both good things and things that may require a little patience in Maui.

The good, of course, are charming towns and a vibrant and fun hospitality infrastructure to service all the people who come to be enraptured by this beautiful island.

The most delightful places on the island maintain their “delightfulness” by NOT having super-highways servicing them. The result is rapturous and picturesque drives on two-lane highways… and sharing them with the many others who are on similar sojourns of joy. So you may encounter some traffic. And the only way you can see Maui is by car, motorcycle, bicycle… or helicopter.

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

If there is one place where renting a car gives you all the freedom to explore – it’s on Maui. Make sure you reserve your car as early as possible. Rates fluctuate with popular holidays and demand. Major car rental brands are located at the airport. Local companies may offer shuttle transfer to off-terminal facilities.

Look But Also Watch

Wherever you drive on Maui, you are going to be tempted with amazing views. Sculpted, volcanic mountain faces, crystal waters with surfers and paddle boarders, maybe even breaching whales during the winter.

So it’s a given you will be tempted to gaze off to mesmerizing vistas that will tempt you every single mile of wherever you are going. So watch out! Also keep your eyes out for drivers who are also mesmerized and may not be paying as close attention as they should. And also remember that lots of people are visiting, and might just drive like they are completely lost!

Impress a Local: The town of Lahaina, on the west side of Maui, was the capitol of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845.

Entrance Fees

Haleakala, Hawaii with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

While most of Maui doesn’t require a park pass, any location inside Haleakala National Park does. This includes the Haleakala Summit and the area where the Ohe’o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) and Pipiwai Trail are located. Visitors can purchase a Haleakala National Park Pass good for three consecutive days at entrance stations or show their America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass for free entry.

Annual national park passes are available for purchase online or at the park entrance. The pass covers entry to all national parks, national monuments, national historic sites, and other federally managed lands. Current military members, families of fourth-grade students, and U.S. citizens with disabilities can receive a free annual pass. Seniors can purchase an annual or lifetime senior pass at a discounted rate, which also gets them discounts on campground fees.

Maui Tour Map

Maui is a tropical paradise with an interesting history; the island is formed by two volcanoes, the West Maui Mountain and Haleakala. These two volcanoes were close enough that they created a narrow strip of land connecting them and ultimately forming the beautiful, 727 square miles of the Maui island we know today.

As the second largest island in Hawaii, Maui is home to five unique regions, all with their own attractions, restaurants, beaches, and so much more.

The first region is West Maui. This region is known for some of the most popular beaches on the island, including Ka’anapali Beach and Kapalua Bay. There are also several resort hotels, condos, and gorgeous golf courses.

Traveling further south down the coast you’ll find yourself in South Maui. This area is popular amongst travelers because it offers luxurious hotels, plenty of dining options, and beautiful beaches such as Wailea Beach and Polo Beach.

Central Maui

If you fly into Maui, this is likely where you’ll land as the primary airport of Kahului Airport is located in Central Maui. This region is less developed than others and offers visitors a unique opportunity to see wildlife and explore some of Maui’s natural attractions, including the Iao Needle.

The famous Road to Hana begins in East Maui and it takes travelers along a beautiful, one-of-a-kind 64-mile road trip that explores the coasts and much more. This region offers authentic Hawaiian pineapple stands and other cultural experiences.

Upcountry Maui

Travel further inland to reach Upcountry Maui and explore the slopes of Haleakala . When you make it to this region, you’ll experience rural Maui and beautiful landscapes that will take your breath away.

Where to Stay

There are two main areas for accommodations in Maui; West Maui and South Maui. Both face west and enjoy those stunning Maui sunsets. Both feature a wide range of accommodation types, with each offering a great selection of both hotels and condos running the gamut from budget to luxury.

Outside of these most popular areas you will find a smattering of guesthouses, boutique inns, private rental homes and even some unusual offerings (think treehouse!).

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

The area known as West Maui comprises the historic whaling town of Lahaina and well-developed resort areas surrounding Ka’anapali Beach. Here you’ll find accommodations ranging from luxury resorts like Montage Kapalua Bay . Kapalua includes a championship golf course that has hosted several PGA events – all the way to very economical vacation rentals and everything in between.

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Like everything in Maui, it’s a beautiful area, with former sugar cane fields gently sloping up to the lush, green West Maui Mountains, and the languid blue Pacific – tamed by a natural harbor created by the islands of Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe that ring this area of ocean.

Best of all, it’s close to Lahaina. Maui might have the most charming towns for any of the Hawaiian Islands, and it would be difficult to rank them, but you can bet that Lahaina would top most lists. Quaint shops and restaurants are woven within fascinating historical sites, including the old harbor, giving you an impression of time travel… if you allow yourself to be so moved by your imagination.

South Shore: Kihei-Wailea-Makena

Just a little closer to the airport is Kihei… also on the west side of the island, but it starts on the isthmus and runs towards the southern part of Maui, of which the entire island is basically on the side of one huge mountain: Haleakala.

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

This area is referred to as the “South Side” or “South Shore”.  It is also a little drier here in the winter months than in West Maui.

The South Shore towns of Kihei and Wailea have the preponderance of hotels and vacation rental condos, with Kihei having the most “pleasantly-priced” accommodations – along with a vibrant community packed with restaurants of every stripe and budget point, and a wide variety of shops, galleries and activity centers that hints of the borderline bohemian beach town it has been for decades, and is much more attractive to families.

Immediately s outh of Kihei is Wailea, and it is almost exclusively… well, exclusive: brimming with luxury resorts – with luxury eateries – and high-end condos for rent. Here, for example, is where you will find the 5-star likes of Four Seasons , Fairmont and the Grand Wailea . It is well groomed and quiet.

If you want an ultimate escape, one should take a look at spending a night or two in Hana, the cool, quiet, Hawaiian hamlet on the eastern fringe of mammoth Haleakala, and namesake of course to the spectacular Road to Hana.

maui bus trip planner

Here you’ll find the 4-star Hana-Maui Resort , the updated version of the postcard-picturesque Hotel Hana… a longtime secret and secluded getaway for locals from every island. Along with the Hana-Maui, you’ll find a very modest selection of less expensive and quaint hotels, B&Bs and cottages for rent.

You’ll also be adjacent to some of the most gorgeous landscape and vistas that Maui has to offer. Be prepared that it helps to pack your own provisions and entertainment. You won’t be left high and dry, but services are limited here – and that is part of the beauty.

Impress a Local: Haleakala means “House of the Sun” in Hawaiian.

When To Visit

There isn’t really a “bad” time to visit Hawaii. Sure, the locals might complain about “winter”, but if you are coming to Maui from most parts of the mainland, you are going to find it totally fantastic.

If we have to highlight the different seasons, winter in Hawaii lasts from December to April. It can be a little cooler, and a little wetter, and there is even the chance of storms that tends to peak around March. But really, you are going to be in shorts, Tshirts and sundresses the whole time. The ocean is always warm enough to swim and enjoy.

Winter is very popular, especially with folks that need to get away from their winter they are leaving at home.  And bonus, is that winter is whale season – see everyone wants to winter in Maui!

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

After winter and the snowbirds, summer holidays are also very busy with the, schools-out, family vacation crowd in June, July and August. So the off-peak, “shoulder seasons” of April-May and September to mid-December are your best chances if you are searching for a deal.

Remember that Maui is an island, so even during summer, there is always going to be a lovely ocean breeze blowing somewhere.

Impress a Local: The placid waters to the west of Lahaina and Kaanapali that are calm by sheltering presence of the islands Molokai and Lanai is known as Lahaina Roads, and throughout the 1940s, the US Navy specified it as an alternate anchorage area for the fleet in Pearl Harbor.

How Much Time Do You Need to Visit Maui

The natural beauty of Maui is of such magnitude and magnificence that one could easily spend weeks exploring and gazing at it, and some lucky Snowbirds from the US and Canada spend the entire winter in Maui.

Generally, one should try to plan at least one week on Maui in order to not feel rushed to get a full sample of the island treasures, because any pre-planned itinerary will often be disrupted by the urge to just relax and gaze at the natural beauty for a few hours or days before plunging off to adventures.

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Multiple Islands

A good rule of thumb is to add one week for every additional island you want to visit.

Impress a Local: Maui County comprises the island of Maui as well as the islands of Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe.

Things to See and Do in Maui

Choices can be overwhelming.

When you first arrive on Maui, you may feel that all you want to do is lay around the beach or by the pool. But it’s very common to start to feel like you want to get out and explore. A morning enjoying the sun and water, and then an afternoon out and about. Then maybe a few full days out – and those sightseeing days can also include that beach time too!

Without a doubt, the Road to Hana is Maui’s most famous drive and something that every visitor should do at least once. More than 600 major curves and nearly 60 bridges, many of them only one lane wide, this drive around the north side of Haleakala is a true adventure, filled with rainforest, waterfalls, beaches  and what has been called Hawaii’s most authentic Hawaiian town.

To make sure you have the most enjoyable time, make sure you download your tour in advance. Many great spots you’ll want to see don’t have any signage. And finally if you are prone to carsickness, prepare before you go with a patch, a herbal supplement or something from the drugstore.

Prepare: Choose which route you want to drive the Road to Hana;

  • the Original classic way from Paia to Oheo Pools at Kipahulu (7 Sacred Pools*) and return
  • a Loop from Paia and continuing past Oheo Pools at Kipahulu  (7 Sacred Pools*) clockwise around Haleakala ending in Central Maui
  • or counterclockwise on the Backroad from Central Maui to Oheo Pools at Kipahulu (7 Sacred Pools*)

Check the current road and weather conditions and forecast before committing which route to take, and don’t forget you must reserve a time to access the Black Sand Beach in Waiʻanapana State Park.

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED

Reservations are required to access Wai ‘ anapanapa State Park (Black Sand Beach). Book your tickets well ahead as reservations sell out, and must be booked at least 1 day in advance of travel on the gostateparks.hawaii.gov site. You cannot make same day reservations.

See how to make a reservation, for what time and other FAQs .

There is such a diverse range of climates and terrains in Maui, that hikes are best categorized by type: dusty and desert-like… lush (and soggy) tropical rainforests… lava-jagged coastal treks… or an outright moonscape. Here is a taste of the best.

Lahaina Pali Trail

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

If you like your hikes nice and dry, consider the Lahaina Pali Trail, an old road in the hot, dry and dusty southern side of West Maui. It’s rugged, and not a stroll – meaning those who are in less than ideal condition will be challenged – but you’ll get fantastic, panoramic views of the central, isthmus valley and Haleakala on the southern end… and whales during the winter.

Maui Guide Trail Tips: this is not a loop, and can be entered from the north side nearest Lahaina , or the south end nearest Maaleaa. Both trailheads are at sea level, but the trail rises sharply to over 1,500 feet within the 2.5 miles to its midpoint.

Pipiwai Trail

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

If you like things lush, then get it all, with rainforests, waterfalls and pools, and even a bamboo forest all in one hike. That would be the Pipiwai Trail, and it includes streams, pools, bridges, waterfalls, a passage through a cathedral of massive, arching bamboo and culminating with the spectacular, 400-foot Waimoku Waterfall.

Maui Guide Trail Tips: This is a generally well-maintained trail, and a jewel of the National Park system, so expect a lot of company on your way. The National Park entrance fee applies here, so bring your NPS pass if you have one, and remember that if you purchase a pass on entry, that same pass can be used at the summit of Haleakala within 3 days. It does get soggy, so wear appropriate footwear and bring raingear and bug spray. And just make sure you allow enough time. The hike takes most people around two hours so if you’re at the trail by 2pm (the gate closes at 4:30pm and everyone must exit by 5pm), you will have lots of time to hike and then drive back.

Wai’anapanapa State Park

If you want little culture with your walk, go to Wai’anapanapa State Park, a gorgeous 122-acre state park just before Hana, packed with stunning vistas and historic sights. Several hike options offer views to the blacks and beach and bay, and views across the water to a sea arch. The park is characterized by amazing lava formations, caves, blowholes, ancient sites, pictographs and native forest groves.

Reservations are required to access Wai ‘ anapanapa State Park (Black Sand Beach). Book your tickets well ahead as reservations sell out, and must be booked at least 1 day in advance of travel on the gostateparks.hawaii.gov  site. You cannot make same day reservations.

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

And if you want an entirely otherworldly experience, then go to the top, and we mean literally: the 10,000-foot high Haleakala. There are several incredible hikes in and around the summit, and all include the challenges of the aforementioned altitude… which means thinner air…. You might find yourself a little short of breath, so take it at an easy pace.  And expect the temperature to be much colder than sea level – Haleakala sometimes sees snow during winter.

Trail options include:

  • The Sliding Sands Trail : a long trek through the crater floor, where the term moonscape is most appropriate. Go as far as you feel comfortable and return to the carpark.
  • Halemauu Trail : which follows along the cliff walls of the crater.
  • The Skyline Trail: traversing the southwest edge of the crater and providing views and an effect like you are walking just as its name suggests.
  • The Supply Trail : a moderate, short hike for those wanting just a taste of the trail and majestic mountain.
  • Hosmer Grove Loop : another short trek at a lower elevation, but as the name implies, this one has trees.

Maui Guide Trail Tips: Wear sturdy boots and bring your raingear. Expect cold, windy weather AND relentless sun. Bring lots of water – you dehydrate much more quickly at this altitude. The UV rays from the sun are also stronger. DO NOT underestimate the reality of a high alpine environment. You’ll also need a park pass for Haleakala National Park, which you can buy at the entrance station or show your existing pass if still valid (passes are valid for three days).

You will be starting at the top and heading down, so remember the hardest part of the hike will be at the end, coming back up.  Also… if you are a scuba diver, be aware that the thin air of Haleakala Summit can give you the bends if you’re loaded up with nitrogen from a dive less than 24 hours before going to the summit.

Impress a Local: The Silversword plant is only found in the crater of Haleakala, and it’s also the mascot of Chaminade University in Honolulu.

Makaluapuna Point

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Bonus hike to another world: Makaluapuna Point, also known as Dragon’s Teeth was formed by fierce wind and waves pushing a lava flow upward to ultimately harden into jagged spikes that resemble the teeth of a dragon… or so say the people who have seen dragons. Real or imagined, we’ll take their word for it and just enjoy this amazing sight, along with gorgeous views of Oneloa and Fleming Beaches, as well as Molokai, sitting right in front of you.

Cultural Experiences in Maui

There are two distinctive phases of Hawaiian history and culture. The time of Native Hawaii, when no foreigners knew of this paradise and Hawaiians practiced their authentic culture. And, the post contact time, when the outside world learned of Hawaii and began landing on her shores.

D uring the early agricultural economy, massive amounts of imported workers arrived from far flung foreign lands for the plantations. This created a fusion of cultures like nowhere else, including Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Filipino Portuguese and even Scandinavian.

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

There are surprisingly many opportunities to connect with the different cultural rivers of Hawaii.

Here are some of the best places to stick a toe into these rivers.

HOW TO VISIT MAUI WITH RESPECT AND COMPASSION

Many areas across Maui are now welcoming visitors back (not Lahaina), but asking for visitors to be mindful the entire community is still healing and grieving.

Here are some tips;

Make sure you’ve packed two things on a trip: patience and grace. Expect to wait for longer than you’re used to for food or other services.

Support local businesses. Your visit will support Maui businesses that rely on tourism for their families’ livelihood. Visit MauiNuiFirst.com for various ways to eat, shop, play, stay and support local.

Hosting uninvited volunteers in direct recovery work may be difficult at this time. Visit MauiNuiStrong.info for efforts welcoming volunteers and contributions.

Do not enter Lahaina Town or take photos of the area, even from afar. The area is restricted because conditions can be hazardous to your health. Respect the privacy of survivors and the dignity of those who lost their lives.

Do not ask about a resident’s personal experience with the disaster. While a question such as “Were you impacted by the fire?” may be intended to be supportive, many survivors are not ready to share their experiences with others.

If you come across a memorial service or other private gathering, leave the area immediately. Respect the gathered survivors and residents — do not take photos or videos.

We hope these guidelines allow you to practice “malama”, a word you will see in recovery efforts that translates to take care of, tend, attend, care for, preserve, protect, beware, save, maintain.

Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum

For over 150 years, the sugar cane industry dominated and defined Hawaii, transforming the kingdom (to put it mildly) and indelibly shaping Hawaii into what it is today. With vast, undulating fields of cane on every island as recently as the mid ‘90s, the last sugar mill in Hawaii – at Puunene on Maui – shut down in 2016, and is now home to a fascinating museum that tells the often bittersweet tale of sugar.

Kahanu Garden & Piilanihale Heiau

Taking a stroll through this National Tropical Botanical Garden located along the Road to Hana, is like walking around ancient Hawaii. The 464-acre garden is closely interwoven with the history of Maui and the Hawaiian people – both from a botanical perspective, and the historical significance of the massive heiau, Piilanihale – a towering, 3-acre ancient temple that is the largest in all of Polynesia… and that’s saying a lot. Explore on your own, or arrange to take one of the guided tours that take place on Saturday mornings.

Best Beaches in Maui

The mainstream (good for families).

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Probably the most famous beach in Maui, Kaanapali frequently shows up on national beach rankings . Located in West Maui just north of Lahaina, the 1-and-half-mile beach was favored by Hawaiian royalty during the days of the kingdom, and now the site of major hotels, resorts and condos. But don’t let those resorts make you think the beach is restricted – like all beaches in Hawaii – the beach itself is a public place. Because of its popularity, it has loads of activity vendors servicing the beach, including parasailing (outside of whale season), surfing, volleyball, and sailing tours. Throw in the shopping, restaurants and food, and you’ll see why it is often referred to as the ‘Waikiki of Maui’. But we think it’s better than Waikiki and will make everyone feel like royalty!

Kamaole Beaches

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

The South Shore equivalence of Kaanapali is Kamaole Beaches: three adjacent beaches that are numbered and referred to by locals as Kam 1, Kam 2 and Kam 3.  They are similar to Kaanapali because they are calm, easily accessible beaches and have a large number of hotels and vacation rentals in Kihei right across the road from them, as well as the shops and restaurants of Kihei close by, too. Picnicking in the beach parks is popular for locals and visitors, with Kam 3 having the largest. The swimming and snorkeling are excellent for each beach, and if there are waves, they tend to be small, and fun for the younger (and sometimes older) set.

Close to Kam 3 on the South Shore is Keawakapu, which is just south of Kam 3 and stretches from Kihei to Wailea.  Though it is still a popular beach, it’s not as crowded as the Kamaole Beaches, and features nice, soft sand perfect for sunbathing and getting in and out from a swim. There’s a reef and tide pools on the northern side for great snorkeling or searching for adventurous sea life in the tide pools.

REEF SAFE SUNSCREEN

Hawaii has introduced a ban on sunscreens contacting chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate to help protect against coral bleaching and marine life.  Don’t trust the labels and double check the ingredients as there isn’t an agreed upon definition yet for “Reef Safe” or “Reef Friendly”.  You may even want to consider buying a swim shirt or rash guard.  They are more effective and you’ll use less sunscreen.

A Little More on the Wild Side

Kahekili Beach

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Also known as North Beach because of its location adjacent to Kaanapali Beach, it is far less crowded than its famous neighbor, with a large beach, plenty of parking and easy access, benches and a fabulous picnic area to enjoy its exceptional beauty. One of its best attributes is the marvelous snorkeling and diving found there. However, even though it has a nice shallow slope into the water for easy access, sometimes strong, unpredictable currents can be present and less confident swimmers should be cautious.

Impress a Local: The last king of Maui was named Kahekili.

Makena Beach

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Also more well known as Big Beach, and located past Wailea on the South Shore, this is Maui’s most expansive undeveloped beach, and it is refreshing destination devoid of any hotels, condos, or  restaurants (maybe the occasional food truck or two) to help you avoid the crowds.  Well, you and several dozens of locals, as it is a popular beach, but as per the name, big enough to accommodate all.

Along with the glory of undeveloped Hawaii, you’ll gaze upon the islands of Kahoolawe and little Molokini floating on the horizon. When the surf is up, an electrifying shore break sees daredevil body boarders taking short and precarious rides on these “dumpy waves”.

Other bonuses include lots of parking, and just next door, Little Beach, Maui’s official nude beach… if you’re into that sort of thing. If you are feeling especially adventurous, just be sure to employ a “liberal” use of sunscreen to the areas that haven’t seen the sun in quite a while, or else your Hawaii vacation will take an EXTREMELY unexpected turn.

WHEN IN DOUBT DON'T GO OUT

Hawaiian lifeguards risk their lives every day to safe ours. Return the favor and obey warnings, closures and use extreme caution in high surf conditions during October to May on North, West and East facing beaches.

The Extremes (Both Ends)

Ho’okipa Beach Park

Located on the northeastern shore, past Kahului (and the airport) and Sprecklesville and Paia, Ho’okipa Beach Park is for expert surfers and windsurfers, and those who like to watch them. There is parking, pavilions, and picnic areas where you can spend the day being mesmerized by the waves and the death-defying surfers, kite-boarders and wind surfers. It’s a popular spot for sea turtles, too.

Baby Beach

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Baby Beach is a protected lagoon and gorgeous beach made especially dramatic by red cliffs and exposed reef. While this coastline is noted for surfing and of course the churning surf that makes it known for surfing, the rocky point on the one end of the beach creates an exceptionally calm lagoon that is great for swimming, and safe for children… hence the name.

Next to the beach are large sand dunes and woods, making this beach the perfect place to swim, hang and take in beautiful coastal vistas, or explore. Pro Tip: This is the WINDWARD side of the island, which makes it one of the premier windsurfing spots in the world… but if the winds pick up, it can make this beach a sandblasting experience. Head over to a wind-protected cove in nearby Baldwin Beach when that happens.

Awesome Experiences in Maui

Of all the delightful things to do on Maui – and there are many – there are two that Maui is renowned for, and pretty much are “must see and dos”.

Whale Watching

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Little did you know that many biped landlubbers share the same habits as the North Pacific Humpback Whale, as every year between November and May, these enormous mammals migrate from Alaska to Maui’s warm waters to winter in Hawaii. There are no fruity cocktails for these beasts however, as they are here on a mission to deliver and nurse a calf to a size where they can make it back to the 49 th state. The peaceful and relatively shallow waters off the western shores of Maui create a perfect sanctuary for them, and so Maui is considered the best in the world for seeing them frolic. Sure, you can see them from the shore, but imagine being on a beautiful boat and having one pop up next to you to give you the eye.

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

If the Hawaiian Islands were a family, Maui would be looked upon as the rich, spoiled cousin by the others, and the wonderful snorkeling opportunities are one of the reasons for the jealousy. You can just walk out into the water from many beaches and see many beautiful fish, or target some easily accessible reefs next to many beaches and bays.

To raise your experience a notch, go out on a snorkel cruise boat, and you should ask about those Maui snorkeling trips where you rent your snorkel gear. If renting your snorkel gear, it is a lot less expensive to rent at dive shops in off-beach shopping areas than from the booths right on the beach or in front of the big hotels.

And if you’re going to take a snorkeling cruise, the absolute premier destination would be…

Molokini Snorkeling

maui bus trip planner

This delightful, crescent-shaped island lies midway between Maui and Kahoolawe off the southwestern shore of Maui, and was formed when a section of a volcano broke away, leaving a teeming coral bed on the shallow, submerged caldera floor, and a wide access for boats to set anchor in the middle of it. You’ll have an amazing submarine landscape of coral with waters so clear you can see them just looking over the edge of the boat, and perhaps with some white and black tip sharks patrolling the area to keep your excitement level up.

Helicopter Tour

If it fits your budget, you might want to consider a helicopter tour. This will open views of many glorious parts of Maui that are unreachable by land – like peering into secret, hidden Maui.

Best Places to Enjoy the Sunset

Obviously, only beaches and areas on the west side of Maui would qualify for this, and this is where Maui really shines, to pardon the pun, because of the beautiful display created by the islands of Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe that are strung along the western horizon.

Haleakala (and also Sunrise)

Interestingly, this is one of the rare instances where the best sunrise spot is also a fabulous place to see the sunset as well. And that, of course, would be Haleakala, yes, the top of the 10,000 foot volcano. That is one of the most amazing sunsets in the world.

Within a few days of arriving on Maui, you will begin to notice a phenomenon familiar to all locals: mornings display the full majesty of Haleakala, backed by a beautiful clear blue sky… but by midday you’ll start seeing the clouds starting to collect around the peak. And by sunset you will only see about half of the mountain.

However, the summit of Haleakala is often above the clouds, so the sunset there is an amazing sight of the sun dipping into a bank of clouds… rendering them a silhouetted mixture of white, purple, blue and orange in the process. What we like best is, unlike sunrise, you don’t have to get up at 4am to enjoy the show.

But… and we cannot stress this enough… it gets cold up there, so bring warm clothing, and prepare for joining a winding caravan of cars going down in pitch blackness.

For just a “regular” spectacular ocean sunset, here are the best locations:

South Shore

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

You heard that right: it’s beache S …as in plural …as in Kamaole Beach 1, 2 and 3. Just pick the beach closest to you, or try them all during your visit. Grab an early takeout dinner to turn your sunset into a full experience!

Po’olenalena Beach Park

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Further south past the luxurious Wailea area and before the extremely popular Makena Beach is Po’olenalena Beach, known by the locals as Chang’s Beach. All you need to know about this beach is that it’s one of the most popular settings for commercial photographers, and weddings. Oh, and it’s also less crowded.

Makena Cove

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Crystal clear water, dressed with lava rocks and palm trees make this the most picturesque sunset spot. But, this one is no secret, so plan on a lot of folks joining you for the magnificent sunsets.

Best sunset spot hands down! To reach this not-so-secret cove, you must walk down a path, through a rock wall, and out onto the beach. While the beach is often crowded, its crystal clear water, lava rocks, and palm trees make it an idyllic spot to enjoy – or photograph – the sunset.

Hanakao’o Beach Park

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Known as Canoe Beach to the locals, this is a wonderful beach that extends on the south side, from massive and super-popular Ka’anapali Beach, but is far less crowded, and is very family friendly with excellent access and parking, comfort stations, and even covered tables.

Kapalua Bay

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Also very family friendly, with calm waters and tide pools for great swimming and snorkeling for children, the rocky outcrops that create the tranquil bay also make a superb framing for a fabulous sunset view.

Not only do the long rocky outcrops at both ends of Kapalua Bay make for safe swimming and snorkeling year-round, but also for magnificent photographs all day long – but especially at sunset.

Best Places to Enjoy the Sunrise

The top seven sunrise spots are far and away the summit of Haleakala… on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etcetera and so on.  However, please listen closely and write down this Pro Tip: Do NOT forget to bring a jacket or sweater to the Haleakala summit. If you don’t have one, put on about 5 t-shirts, and then be prepared to draw your arms inside them, turning yourself into a human burrito.

If a Haleakala sunrise is in your plans, don’t find out when you arrive that: you must have a reservation to visit the park for sunrise!

Reservations are required for sunrise viewing at the Haleakala Summit from 3am – 7am daily, visit  nps.gov  for reservations and further details. No reservations are required for viewing at other times of the day or sunset.

Coming in tied for second would be…

Koki Beach Park

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

You’ll hear about this park a lot from us on the tour, as it is packed with beauty and immense cultural significance. But it also faces east, and therefore must be included as a fabulous place to watch a sunrise. But start out extra early… and in fact, if you are in West Maui, you’d better start just after midnight because this incredible park is past Hana. So it’s a journey that takes planning and commitment if you are not staying in Hana.

But seeing the magnificence of the sun rising over the tiny island of Alau that sits on the horizon off the bay might be worth it, and you can then take a nice long snooze on the wide sandy beach. But only in the summer months; in the winter, a lot of the sand is drawn out to sea, leaving a rugged coastline and rough water you do NOT want to venture in.

Impress a Local: If you are trying to impress a local by telling them you know that Haleakala means “House of the Sun” in Hawaiian, but they just roll their eyes and look un-impressed (they’ve heard that many times before). So, follow up by saying that you know you are a Malahini… a newcomer. Then you will have their attention!

Food in Maui

Food for thought – and action.

Exploring and experiencing Maui – amazing! And you know what – so much enjoyment will work up a tremendous appetite.

That said, for efficiency’s sake, here are just a few of the most notable and tastiest food choices on the Valley Isle categorized by destination.

Filling Up in Upcountry

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

The gorgeous country that stretches from Makawao to Ulupalakua has been Paniolo country since the mid-1800s, when a potpourri of immigrants came here to farm and raise cattle. This is the land of Hawaiian paniolo , cowboy country; rich in farming and ranching history.

But a newer wrinkle for Upcountry, is organic farming, and you get a perfect chance to experience Old Hawaii next to the new, with an engaging tour of the Hawaii Sea Spirits Organic Farm and Distillery , an experience that enlightens visitors to the importance of farming for the conservation of the land and ocean. As well as some refreshing local libations.

And in nearby Kula, the Surfing Goat Dairy provides fun for the entire family, as well as tasty treats of award-winning goat cheese.

But don’t forget that farming and ranching started it all, and the original farm-to-table model existed for more than a century before its popularity now, and one of the first advocates and practitioners of the farm-to-table renaissance is the acclaimed Hali’imaile General Store in Makawao , which began serving delectable dishes from locally-grown food in 1988, and has remained one of the state’s premier restaurants ever since.

A little more casual stalwart of farm-to-table is the Ulupalakua Ranch Store & Grill , steeped in rich, paniolo history and drop dead views, and a mouth-watering selection of burgers made from all-locally sourced meats, including beef, lamb and their famous elk burger.

Hana Hot & Tasty

A trip to Hana is a journey completely drenched in charm, and in keeping with the Maui Rule that it’s both the journey and destination, look for local vendors along the way, and you’ll find the absolute freshest fare, including island smoked fish, BBQ assortments, breadfruit, toasted coconut, warm, fresh-baked banana bread among other delightful findings.  Covid-19 has been challenging for vendors along the route, so don’t go with expectations – just be ready to enjoy whatever is available on the day.

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Highly recommended is trying tropical fruits from roadside stands, regular, or blended into a delicious smoothie.

After being completely charmed by your journey to Hana, why stop? Plan your return to end at one of the most famed restaurants in Maui: Mama’s Fish House , a seaside eatery that also serves as a complete immersion into Hawaiiana décor with a postcard, palm-ringed beach cove competing for your attention from the delightful furnishings and artwork. Fish and chip, or fish taco lovers will be ready to stop in at the Paia Fish Market at the end of their Road to Hana day.

Watching Your Weight in Wailuku (but whether it’s going up or down is the question)

maui bus trip planner

A trip to Wailuku is a journey to urban Hawaii – from 60 years ago, that is. And what better way to time-trip than to visit a classic, coffee-shop luncheonette?

Only open for breakfast and lunch, Sam Sato’s is a local favorite since it opened in 1933, and serves classic Hawaii plate lunches and a wide variety of noodle dishes, including a renowned dry mein: a Hawaii noodle dish of boiled saimin noodles topped with char sui, bean sprouts and green onions, served with small bowl of chicken sauce on the side. A classic Maui-original dish.

For something a little – well, let’s face it, a lot more contemporary, A Saigon Café hidden on Main Street serves fabulous Vietnamese fare with a lighthearted vibe. Good food and good fun and just one of many choices for Asian-inspired cuisine on Maui.

You Can Get Here From Pretty Much Anywhere

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Centrally located in Ma’alaea Harbor, the Ma’alaea General Store and Café provides a refreshing rest stop and coffee break for those traveling between Lahaina and… well pretty much anywhere else in Maui, as well as those fresh off the boat from water sporting. But it’s not just convenience and a good cup of joe that’s on the menu. Their breakfast, lunch and brunch fare, and enjoyed in their cool, lanai looking out on the harbor will delight other senses besides your taste buds and recharge you for your continuing adventures.

Appetite Whetting in West Maui

Maui with GyPSy Guide Driving Tour App

Sorry, just too many choices to select from here.  You will have no trouble finding a winner!

If you push for a recommendation that offers both a sumptuous dining experience and view to match, Sea House Restaurant in the Napili Kai Beach Resort features delectable Pacific Rim cuisine. Best known for breakfast and sunset dinners.

Supping on the South Shore

maui bus trip planner

Once again, just too many to choose from. But if we want to try dining that features local Hawaiian influences, both of these are snuggled between Kihei and Wailea.

The Monkeypod Kitchen at Wailea Gateway, and Lineage at The Shops at Wailea offer a unique presentations authentic to Maui’s heritage and present.

For delicious sushi anytime, Sansei in Kihei is hard to beat.  But to be a part of the legend, try and snag a seat for the famous Sunday and Monday 1/2 price food happy hour. Check their website for current details on this tradition!

The poke craze has taken over the world, but we purists will always stand by the creed that poke is authentically Hawaiian. Try and enjoy the real-deal local poke. The South Maui Fish Co is now located inside the Aloha Open Marketplace on South Kihei Road and well worth stopping in to get your fill.

Impress a Local: Unlike other trees with large canopies, you WILL find grass growing under the monkeypod tree, because its seeds are rich in nitrogen – a key element in fertilizer – and its leaves roll up at night to allow rain to reach the thriving grass below, making it the premiere shade tree for backyards and parks throughout Hawaii.

Maui Packing List

Clothing: If you don’t like shorts, you’re going to the wrong destination. Pack at least two pairs. One casual, one “dress.” Seriously, it all of course depends on your plans. Everything on Maui ranges from budget to luxury, so if your planning on a week of burgers at the beach concessionaire, it’s best to have backup shorts for potential ketchup stains.

But if you’ll be sitting down for some white linen tablecloth fine dining, casual attire is still OK, but make sure you have something appropriate. And for fine dining in Hawaii, that pretty much only means a collared shirt or nice blouse, and if you’re wearing sandals, they better be pretty damn good ones.  Plus, if you’ve ever had the notion about starting a collection of “aloha wear,” this is the place to do it.

Footwear: In Hawaii, they are called “rubbah’ slippahs”… elsewhere, “flip-flops” or “zoris.” Whatever you call them, “pack ‘em if you got ‘em.” If not, look to buy some when you arrive. You’ll have about a zillion choices. If you are planning some hikes, well, you know what to do. Just be assured that your feet will get wet.

Impress a Local: Buy and wear the cheapest “rubbah slippahs” you can find… usually in Long’s Drug Stores. If you want luxurious ones, by all means buy ‘em… then pack ‘em to show off to all your friends back home.

Sun Protection: If you are serious about protecting yourself, use a minimum of 30 SPF.

Impress a Local (and Mother Earth): Buy Reef Safe sunscreen. Maui’s reefs are wonderful… but they are a couple notches down from their pristine condition just 20 years ago, and coral-killing sunscreen is one major reason why.

Wet Bag: A handy item to have whether you’re at the beach or hiking, it’s perfect for your wet or muddy clothes or simply to pick up any trash that you might find along the way – getting you into the “aloha spirit”.

Maui Travel Guide Tips

  • Aloha, Kapuu and the Ocean: Everyone wants to have a good time. So embrace aloha. Wind down, be patient, respectful, obey closures, and be extra alert in the ocean and along trails.
  • Driving the Road to Hana: It’s about 55 miles between Paia and Pools at Oheo (Seven Sacred Pools) but expect a long day of between 10-12 hours with stops. Ideally you want to start no later than 8am from Paia. If you are not comfortable with driving the last part of the return drive in the dark, be sure to turn around no later than 3.30pm (4.30pm in summer).
  • Rain: It’s perfectly normal for it to rain somewhere and at any time in Hawaii every single day, but it can arrive and depart all within 20 minutes. However, you might run into a storm that lasts all day. On Maui you might be lounging in the sun at Kihei, standing in snow on Haleakala or seeing torrential rain and floods in Iao Valley or along the Road to Hana.
  • Rental Car: Never leave the windows or top down in your rental car, no matter how glorious the weather. It can be absolutely cloudless for hours on end, then suddenly cloud up and rain within minutes. And you know, thefts also occur in Hawaii. So leave any valuables out of sight, or better, at home.
  • Wai'anapanapa Black Sand Beach Reservations: Reservations are required to access Wai'anapanapa State Park (Black Sand Beach). Book your tickets well ahead as reservations sell out, and must be booked at least 1 day in advance of travel on the gostateparks.hawaii.gov site. You cannot make same day reservations.
  • Haleakala Sunrise Reservations: Reservations are required for sunrise viewing at the Haleakala Summit from 3am – 7am daily, visit nps.gov for reservations and further details. No reservations are required for viewing at other times of the day or sunset.
  • Iao Valley Reservations: Reservations are required for Iao Valley, visit gostateparks.hawaii.gov for reservations and further details.
  • Pipiwai Trail (Haleakala National Park): It's the most popular hike on the Road to Hana. Expect to take 2+ hours depending on your fitness level and the 800 foot elevation gain. So long as you arrive at the trail by 2pm (the gate closes at 4:30pm), you will have lots of time to hike and then drive back.
  • Park Pass: All visitors to Haleakala National Park require a National Park Pass, which includes Haleakala Summit, Ohe'o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) and Pipiwai Trail. Passes are valid for three days including the day purchased so you can show your existing pass if it's still valid.
  • How many days in Maui?: Time is precious and you’re going to want to make the most of every second when you visit the beautiful island of Maui. We recommend at least a 7-day trip to visit as many attractions as possible, enjoy the food, and take in all the spectacular scenery.

What are the Best Hawaii Apps?

Shaka guide.

The Shaka Guide has always been an amazing audio-tour option for travels to Hawaii. It’s super easy to use, and it’s much cheaper than a tour.

And for people that like to tour at their own pace, this app has filled a much-needed niche of all-encompassing tours without having to meet together in physical groups of people.

One of the best Hawaii travel apps is the Shaka App. There's one for Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the Big Island and they are GPS-location activated audio tours. Image of a woman posing by a silver car on Kauai.

Shaka tours are GPS location-activated audio tours, best paired with a car rental on the islands of  Oahu ,  Maui ,  Big Island , and  Kauai . The tours will let you in on local  Hawaiian history facts  and authentic Hawaiian storytelling, all while giving you turn-by-turn navigation.

No need to pause or rewind with these audio tours! Relax and let the GPS do almost everything for you except take the wheel. This is our   favorite Hawaii app !

Hawaii Revealed App

So, I’m including the  Hawaii Revealed App  in this list because it’s really popular. However, sometimes it encourages tourists to  trespass on private property . But, as long as you keep that in mind, it has a lot of useful features.

Hawaii Revealed is actually a series of  award-winning guidebooks ,  known for their clarity and up-to-date maps. The books are now even more widely used in the Hawaii Revealed app, which includes GPS features enabling you to use the application and location services accurately without Wifi or a phone signal.

This Hawaii travel app also offers unbiased reviews on local beaches, attractions, sights, and hotel summaries. Reviewers love how Hawaii Revealed offers unique filtering options and ease in comparing restaurant and dining options.

While you can use the app alone, reading the guidebooks and home before taking the app with you on your trip can give you an all-encompassing experience. There’s a book for every island in Hawaii, so get reading!

It is definitely one of the smartphone apps you will want around with you.

DaBus2 (Hawaii Bus App for Oahu)

If Oahu is on your list of Hawaiian islands to visit, DaBus2 is an application you can’t pass on.

DaBus2  is an app built to display bus route information alongside arrival and departure times. Buses on the island are essential and affordable for visiting areas across the island, and this application works in tandem with Oahu Transit Services.

TheBus is the best public transportation on Oahu. DaBus2 is an app that displays bus route info. Image of TheBus driving on Bishop Street in Honolulu.

Many of the Oahu buses have GPS devices installed, which makes the estimated arrival and departure times of specific buses all the more accurate. The app even has virtual ride explorations to help you visualize and plan your bus route or choose a new one.

If you plan to not rent a car, you will need this mobile device to know the bus routes and when they will arrive.

Hawaiian Words – Translation and Dictionary

Hawaiian Words  is a translator that will quickly and accurately help you translate English words into Hawaiian. It will even provide you with its pronunciations! Hawaii is the only state to have two official languages, Hawaiian and English.

And thankfully, apps like this are helping to keep the language of Hawaiian alive. Each day, the app will prompt you to learn one word in Hawaiian. However, you can use it as a translator in either direction as well.

I believe that anyone interested in visiting the Hawaiian islands should dedicate some time to learning a bit of the Hawaiian language if only to be respectful of the culture you’ll visit.

In fact, NOT learning a few Hawaiian words is on our list of  25 Hawaii Mistakes Every Tourist Has Made , and even simple terms like “Kokua” and “Keiki” can give you insight into the Hawaiian culture of respect.

Magic Seaweed Surf Forecast (Now Surfline)

The  Magic Seaweed Surf Forecast app  offers forecasts for surfing locations across the world. If you’re a surfer, you’ll appreciate the app’s rating of surf size, swell height, and even wind direction and water temperature.

Check the Magic Seaweed Surf Forecast app before hitting the beach in Hawaii. Image of a man surfing in Hawaii.

While the app may be most useful to surfers, it still proves its usefulness for beach-goers of any capacity. You might even be able to catch a day with average surf conditions and hopefully matching amounts of people without a congested beach.

Hawaii News Now Weather App

Besides beach weather, weather in Hawaii can be tracked with the  Hawaii News Now Weather app .  This app is free and includes map displays both vertically and horizontally. Weather alerts are color-coded, and you’ll be able to look at weather in 10-day intervals as well as daily and hourly forecasts.

You can also opt-in to weather alerts right in this weather app and save yourself from checking constantly. Instead, let yourself be alerted to drastic weather conditions only; otherwise, enjoy your vacation without even checking the app.

The app is free and features radar, vertical and horizontal map display with looping, the highest resolution satellite cloud imagery available, exclusive Road Weather Index, color-coded weather alerts arranged by severity, and 10-day, daily and hourly forecasts.

Plus, it’s available on both iPhone and Android.

Sunrise Companion: Sunrise and Sunset Times

Our final application recommendation for the day is the  Sunrise Companion app . This app will predict when sunrise and sunsets occur based on your location, and can therefore give you great estimates for catching golden hour photos and one-in-a-lifetime scenery shots.

Find out how to see sunrise at Haleakala National Park by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel with Kids. Image of Beautiful sunrise scene on Haleakala volcano, Maui island, Hawaii

Very few of us don’t dream of catching a sunset in Hawaii, and these apps can make the process all the easier. Look for one that doesn’t require Wi-Fi or a phone signal. Relying on GPS can be more efficient and save you from guessing when you’re far from a hotel or resort’s Wi-Fi.

Planning the Perfect Hawaii Trip with Apps

No matter where you choose to go in Hawaii, there are countless beautiful sites to explore and nature photos to take. Relying on some of the apps above can not only help you plan at home but ensure that you are properly equipped to get around the islands once you arrive.

From audio tours to surf and weather forecasts and even GPS-based sunset calculators, you’ll be ready to enjoy Hawaii in its entirety with these Hawaii travel apps.

Hawaii Travel Planner FAQs

For a first trip to Hawaii, I always recommend 7-10 days. That way, you can adjust to the time change, take a few tours, do a few outdoor adventures, go for a  scenic drive , and have time to just relax.

That totally depends on how many days you are spending in Hawaii. I usually recommend 5-7 days per island. Keep in mind that you’ll need to take an inter-island flight and probably rent a car, which can eat up several hours.
