You may have seen our list of the best youtube travel vloggers written by the outstanding Christine of GrrlTraveler . She introduced us to some of the best travel vloggers who have endured through the years. That list of youtube channels features the heavy hitters and best travel vloggesr on YouTube, including Vagabrothers, Mark Weins, Kristen and Siya, Samuel and Audrey and Hey Nadine. So check that out here .

We didn’t want to mess with Christine’s list, but we did want to share more amazing youtube travel channels with you that we check out weekly. Christine had a strict criteria for her choices for the best travel channel like consistent updates, niche, and channels that bring a new spin on the word Travel Show – (She knows what she likes and she has a TV producing background after all).

Best Travel YouTube Channels

We chose our list of YouTube travel channels in a similar fashion. They are people we watch regularly, they update consistently, and have entertaining videos and personalities and do creative work. These travel YouTubers combined with Christine’s list are the best travel channels on youtube. They make us want to travel and I know they will do the same for you. 

Most Inspiring YouTube Travel Channels

These are not in a particular order. Everyone on this list is a great travel channel on YouTube. There is something to suit everyone’s taste.

1. MIKE COREY

Mike is one of the most innovative storytellers in travel on YouTube. With his unique editing, fantastic footage and wild sense of adventure you’ll love watching his videos from around the world. Because of his high production value, Mike is hired a lot for companies and brands to make professional travel videos on their channels. Mike is so charismatic, he is a host on the BBC Travel channel too!

2. Drew Binsky

When we first wrote this list (and Christine wrote hers) Drew Binskey wasn’t even on the radar yet. And now he has exploded to become the most successful youtube travel channel out there. He is on a mission to visit every single country on earth and Drew shares videos that take you off the beaten path. He is always showing you what it is really like to travel to a place and he features locals in interviews showcasing their culture and every day life.

3. ARIENNE PARZEI

Arienne has burst onto the scene in the past year, but we’ve known her for quite some time. Winning the Best in Travel at the Buffer Festival in Toronto (this is considered the Oscars of YouTube Travel) she has gone none stop producing quality videos. Her 8 part video series highlights her climb of Mount Kilimanjaro with World Vision Canada. Her videos are professional quality and she is highly sought after by brands and destinations to produce travel videos.

4. Going Awesome Places

Will of Going Awesome Places covers everything travel. From what travel gear he uses, to giving you inspiration to create your own trips. We love his editing style, use of drones and the feeling of taking you into the destination as you travel along. Will has some great adventures and is a serious adventure traveler but he also has a lot of fun showing travels that everyone can do too!

5. Tourist2Townie

Gareth travels slow and really delves into the destination that he visits. Tourist2Townie travelled extensively in Brazil and became a sensation in Brazil. While visiting a Rio favela, we even saw his logo plastered on the walls of the community. Now that’s fame! 

He’s now left South America and is bigger than ever traveling the world and sharing his video series from each country he visits on his exceptional travel channel.

6. Expert Vagabond

Matthew Karsten is the king of adventure travel doing everything from diving with sharks in South Africa (without a cage) to trekking solo across Greenland. If you want inspiration or need some motivation to get your lazy butt off the couch, check out his videos that he’s posted from his years of travelling around the world.

Update: We shared Matt’s video above in 2019 when updating this article and couldn’t believe this moment never went viral. Well guess what? It finally hit the big time and everyone is buzzing about that penguin now. Check it out.

7. Steve Hanisch

Steve is another travel videographer with high production value on his travel channel that is sought after by tourism board and travel brands. He speaks around the world about making travel videos and produces his videos in both English and German. He’s also got a great sense of humour and is an all-around nice guy.

8. Be My Travel Muse

Kristin is one of the top female travel bloggers and is making waves in the travel vlogging world now too! Travel along with your laid back vibe as she goes around the world to places like the Philippines and Mexico to everywhere in between. She does adventure travels and we love how she chats directly to the audience making you feel like a friend.

Maiku runs his own production company and has won several video awards. We always love checking out his videos. He has put together some great video series that keep you hooked on what is coming next. I really like his behind the scenes information and journalist quality videos like the video above showcasing the Toronto restaurant market.

10. David’s Been Here

David Hoffmann has been traveling the world since 2008. We met him in Istanbul and since that time his YouTube Channel that focuses on food and travel has skyrocketed! With videos uploaded nearly every day from 77 countries and over 1,000 destinations, you’ll never run out of things to watch!

11. Getting Stamped

Adam and Hanna are that dreamy couple that you see on commercials showcasing exotic destinations. They were made for starring in their own travel channel. We love going to island destinations with them as they showcase beautiful locales with their drone work and fanstastic cinematography.

12. Vacation Couple

Kristin and Shadi specialize in resort tours and when we book vacations, we check out their travel channel first. Shadi is a graphic artist by trade, so his work is second to none. When you watch their travel videos, you feel like you are watching a Club Med advertisement and will want to book a luxurious getaway right now!

13. Nomadasaurus

Alesha and Jarryd are an Australian adventure couple that have been on the go for since meeting in a hostel in 2008. They’ve recently returned home after a decade of traveling the world and are showcasing their life in a van through fun videos. We love their organic style and sense of adventure in their videos.

14. Christopher Rudder

Chris is a fellow Canuck who shares his love for travel through his cinematic style and very sexy voiceovers. (this is Deb talking here 🙂 I feel like I am watching a full on travel show when watching Chris as he covers everything from adventure to food, culture and city guides.

15. CAILIN O’NEIL

Cailin was one of the first travel bloggers/youtubers we ever discovered. Coming from a film and TV background she puts a lot of information and personality into her videos. Cailin is a fellow Canuck who has a great sense of humour and a talent for storytelling. Coming from a film and tv background, she makes her travel videos feel like a proper documentary-like one of our favourites the Tomatino Festival.

16. Cammy D

Cameron is the son of one of the world’s top travel writers, Heather Greenwood Davis and he is going to be a star. While still in school, he’s been producing travel vlogs about travels that he’s been on with his family. He’s been branching out recently from travel to tackle subjects like racism, the importance of youth voices, and even showing off his talents in video games.

17. Brendan Vanson

Brendan has a great mix of photography tuturials and day vlogging. Mixing his talents for photography and his great sense of humour, he has been able to carve out a unique niche that has attracted a large following. If you love to take pictures of your travels, you’ll love his getting the shots series “Where he explains how he takes his breathtaking images.

If you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of Canadians on this list. I didn’t know it until I compiled this one but clearly We Canucks tend to have a lot of love for each other. This list is also not in a particular order.

Way late to the game but I’d recommend Indigo Traveller. He puts out lots of great content, goes to a number of less poplar destinations (including NK), and seems like a genuinely awesome guy to boot.

Hey there! When/if you update your YouTube adventure travels to watch list, maybe consider QE Adventures (short for Quinn and Ethan Adventures).

These teenage brothers are skilled videographers and editors and personably narrate their family friendly high adventures in a style that makes audiences wish they’d come along. It’s one of the few channels with videos from the teenage travelers’ perspectives.

What is with the popularity contest? This is the same boring list that everyone publishes. I’m so tired of seeing the same people on these lists, two of whom should not be included!

You are more than welcome to add some names. We asked if anyone had someone to add. So put them on the list. These are the people we follow and enjoy. Also, there is another list that Christine wrote for us just before we compiled this one. that we talked about at the beginning of this blog post. (if you read it) And the reason we decided to do a part two. Sorry if you are not on it, I am not familiar with your videos, but I’ll take a look. I don’t know everyone out there. But I try.

Kara and Nate are travel vloggers that are just good wholesome fun.  They set out from Nashville Tennesee to travel the world about 5 years ago.  Soon after, they made a bucket list goal to visit 100 countries by 2020.  They met their 100-country goal, and by that time, YouTube was a steady career for them.  Kara and Nate are truly addicted to international travel, but COVID changed that game for the couple.  Having no quit in them, they found a way to travel safely and returned to the United States.  They converted a Sprinter van and have set a new goal to visit all 50 states.  Kara and Nate are one of the largest travel channels and have now put out more than 800 videos, so you better get started!

What Makes Kara and Nate Special:  

Kara is a joyful soul. There is nothing more fun on the planet than watching these two crazy Welsh kids tackle the world! Their accents are hilarious.  They are hilarious.  Craig and Aimee have been together for a very long time, and their relationship has been strengthened by a near-death experience by each of them!  When they met, Aimee had just received a cancer diagnosis, and the road was long and hard.  Then, Craig challenged their relationship some more with a broken neck from an adventure sports accident. 

These two events, in a short span of time, convinced this crazy pair to chase after an unconventional life, and to live every moment to its fullest! Through it all, they have kept their joy and their sense of spontaneity.  Their motto is to “Rule Your Own World,” and they certainly do.  They have spent the last couple of years renovating a Mercedes Vario Bus into their new home.  Custard the Bus is a beauty, and her European adventures are just beginning. They have 500 travel videos for you to binge!  We think they are one of the best travel channels on YouTube and terribly underrated. 

What Makes Kinging It Special:

Craig and Aimee are absolutely hilarious.  They will have you wetting yourself, every episode!  Plus, they take on the wildest challenges.  They have completed the massive and absurd Mongol Rally, a competition that travels all through Europe and Asia, usually ending somewhere in Eastern Russia.  The car must be a clunker and have under a 1L engine, and chaos is highly encouraged!  Craig and Aimee’s Mongol Rally Series will have you rolling. Then these crazy kids bought their own rickshaw and proceeded to drive it from across India from North to South.  It was a wild ride.  Craig and Aimee are two personalities that you won’t soon forget, and their wild abandon, hilarious travel stories, and zest for life will make you want to live a little more freely, and “Rule your own world!”

Raya and Louis

Who are they:.

Raya and Louis are fairly new to the Travel YouTube scene as a couple, but Louis Cole has been in the biz for a long time.  His original channel, FunForLouis has over 2Million Subs, and it’s easy to see why.  Louis is just likable with his laidback vibe and a head full of dreadlocks. He’s an easy-going and loveable dude.  He and Raya are currently traveling through Europe in a rented van visiting family and taking holiday, but soon they will head back to their main mission.  They have about 50 videos out, so you can still easily catch up with the adventure.

What Makes Raya and Louis Special: 

Raya and Louis are into deep convos.  They have spilled the beans about the hard parts of their relationships and mental health issues, and there is just something about that level of vulnerability that makes you want to watch. They are also very eco-conscious and give great tips on how to travel in an eco-friendly way.  They have recently purchased land in Costa Rica to build a tree-house jungle community.  Like with everyone else, COVID changed their plans a bit, but soon, they will be making their way down to Costa Rica in their converted school bus to start a new life!  We can’t wait to see the community they build.

They always show us the best places to eat, and exactly what weird foods to try. 

Their lighthearted personalities and willingness to just be their nerdy selves make you instantly love them!  They have currently begun a tiny home renovation too, but not any old sprinter van would fit these two.  They have bought a completely run-down 1970s RV, and they are taking on the renovation completely by themselves!  Clementine  is going to be a beauty, and it has been an awesome journey to watch.  They have  737  videos for you to catch up on!

What Makes Endless Adventure Special:  

They make great videos.  They cover great content, but Allison and Eric are people you could watch read the phone book and be happy.  They are really enjoyable to watch, no matter what they are doing.  They obviously love one another. They love good beer and whiskey in equal measure, and they love a challenge.  They are awkward, funny, quirky, and absolutely adorable!  Keep it coming Eric and Allison. We love it all!

Who Is He:  

“Food is the reason you should travel.”  Well, Mark, we agree!  After University, Mark Wiens set out to find the world’s best street food.  He has traveled the markets of Southeast Asia, stalls of Japan, and he recently spent 16 days with the street vendors of Pakistan.  Mark’s channel is absolutely huge!  With over 8 million viewers, it’s obvious that we YouTube viewers really love food…and Mark.  Mark is an unassuming and charming guy. His great big smile, love for food, and humble demeanor are endearing.  Between his YouTube personality and his incredibly informative blog, Migrationology,  it’s no wonder he has so many faithful followers.  Mark has found a beautiful wife in Thailand and settled with his new family in Bangkok, but they still travel frequently in the hunt for the best street foods in the world!

Honestly, we all wish we knew Mark’s secret!  We think the secret to Mark’s success, aside from some great business savvy, is his magnetic personality.  Mark is one of the most positive personas online.  Even after over 1,100 videos on food, he still seems just as excited as he did with the first one!  Mark greets every new place and every new food adventure with gusto and genuine excitement.  Mark loves food, and we love Mark!

Travel Beans

Alex and Emma are a pair of Brits out traveling the world and documenting their “Tipsy Beans” moments.  They may or may not have a tendency to get a little inebriated while filming.  Alex is witty and his sarcasm comes at the most unexpected moments.  Emma is a doll and has been very prominent in the push for better mental health advocacy.  Emma has struggled with some depression issues, which they have well-documented in a two-part series on their channel.  Thankfully, she has received the help she needed and has come out on the other side.  She now uses their channel on occasion to express the importance of finding life and health in this world, and doing what makes you happy! Alex and Marko Ayling made YouTube travel content for years as the Vagabrothers.  They have now slowed on that, but Alexander is taking on a brand new adventure.  He has moved to New Zealand and bought a homestead with his wife Carrie. Rick Steves is the king of all things travel-related. Period.  There are no better travel guide books on the planet! His fabulously detailed books and ridiculously nerdy audio guides have been leading us through Europe and making us snort-laugh for years! But, the YouTube videos he produces are just as good.  Rick isn’t really a vlogger in the traditional sense.  His videos are definitely professionally researched, written, filmed, and produced by a talented professional team.  They are just the right mix of fun and informative, with all the necessary information on tourist sites and local must-do items. 

What Makes Rick Steves Special:

In short, the experience.  Rick has traveled Europe extensively, with multiple visits to each country.  His team of local guides, researchers, and destination experts put for the most up-to-date and interesting information and leave out the fluff!  With well over 1800 videos to peruse, there really is no better place to get all your necessary trip information. 

Sailing la Vagabonde

Riley and Elayna have the world’s largest sailing YouTube channel.  These two Aussies are going through a transition though.  They recently had their second baby and sailed their last sail.  So, what is up for the crazy foursome now?  We don’t really know, but we know it will be fun!

Jits into the Sunset

Tania and Adam are an Irish and English couple traveling the UK with their Sprinter van  Jitters.  They are different in the YouTube crowd.  They make travel vlogs, yes, but not all that often.  They are self-proclaimed slow travelers, who put out new videos whenever they feel like it. However, they are full of travel inspiration and well worth the wait.  

What Makes Jits Special:  

Adam and Tania do life van life their own way, and they don’t seem to get caught up in the travel YouTube channel game.  They make vlogs, but it doesn’t seem to rule their life.  They live on their own plane and do things in true freedom, and that’s an admirable way to live!

Ryan and Abby are a married couple from Arkansas.  They left their jobs and sold it all in early 2020: the big house, the cars, all of it! Little did they know COVID was coming. Like everyone on this list,  it changed their plans a bit, but they managed to Central America and start their world tour.  Ryan is quiet, slightly awkward, and you can tell he is the world’s nicest person.  Abby is sassy, funny, and you never know what might come out of her mouth!  

Ryan and Abby are culture vultures who genuinely love to learn about history, cultural oddities, and all the things that make different people groups unique.  They are full-time travelers and digital nomads, so their version of slow travel and international living is refreshing to watch. 

What Makes Lost Among Locals Special:  

They traveled internationally for 12 years before leaving for full-time travel and had already experienced several amazing destinations as a pair.  So, they bring a unique blend of touristy sites juxtaposed with everyday local life and budget travel tips.  They dance with Albanians at a baby’s birthday party, play street games with old Turkish men, and score the best local foods in every destination.  COVID definitely made local interaction harder for them, as they regrettably express, but we look forward to seeing more of their off-the-beaten-path lifestyle in the future!  Keep up the good work guys!

The Vandersons

Emily and Danny feel like instant friends.  They are just so likable.  Danny and Emily set out in their van, with their cat Graham and dog Sombrita right after they got married.  They have since been traveling through Central America with their nomad pet family! Their goal is to make the full journey from Seattle to Argentina in their tiny, colorful van.  Though they are new to video making, their vlogs are heartfelt and laidback.  Danny is a lifelong BMX biker and app developer, with a surfer boy vibe and Emily is the sweetest soul. Emily has a narrating voice that is absolute perfection. Ben Franklin’s Star Turn

In the new Apple TV+ series Franklin , Benjamin Franklin spends a lot of his time waiting. He waits for recognition from the French court. He waits for news—preferably something good—from America. He waits at parties for someone to translate his witticisms into French bons mots . Michael Douglas may be the marquee star, but the awkward pause plays a key role. If this sounds like a trial to watch, it isn’t; the actors play silence to good effect, exemplifying the extent to which diplomacy is a game best played by the patient.

Based on Stacy Schiff’s 2005 book A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America , the Franklin series focuses on American diplomatic efforts to build alliances and gain support during the Revolutionary War. Joining a growing stable of shows on Apple TV+ that Slate has dubbed “AP U.S. History TV,” Franklin dramatizes the relatively little-known but crucial negotiations that made it possible for the Continental Army to stand on equal ground with the British. The first three episodes of eight release today, tracing Franklin’s work from the day he arrived in France in December 1776 until about a year later, when news reached Paris of the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga.

Franklin and his grandson, William Temple Franklin (played by Noah Jupe), arrive in Paris to crowds and acclaim. Struggling to earn the attention of French officials, particularly the foreign minister, the Comte de Vergennes, the two Franklin men settle slowly into French society. They are taken in by a French aristocrat and merchant, Jacques-Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont, whose mansion in the village of Passy just outside Paris becomes Franklin’s base of operations for nearly a decade. The elder Franklin, along with Chaumont and Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, scheme to illicitly transport arms, munitions, and other supplies to America under the banner of a front operation they called “Rodrigue Hortalez and Company.”

Temple Franklin, meanwhile, quickly learns French so that he may better enjoy French society (and flirt with young women). He meets the Marquis de Lafayette by coincidence, immediately joins the young aristocrat’s social circle, and remains there after the Marquis sails for glory in America. And he butts heads with his grandfather, who sternly reprimands Temple’s lascivious lifestyle. Alas, the Benjamin of Franklin seems to have forgotten his own wayward youth.

Franklin’s life story is so broad-ranging that even such a narrow examination ends up sprawling across the screen. In just three episodes, we meet numerous Americans and several British spies and diplomats, plus King Louis XVI, Queen Marie-Antoinette, the French first minister, the treasurer, the foreign minister, and several other key aides. John Adams has yet to arrive in France, but he’ll appear in future episodes.

Key to the show’s functioning is the casting of Douglas as the septuagenarian founder. I will admit that when I first saw the trailer last year, I had trouble imagining Douglas in the role. There is an edge to Douglas, both physically and vibes-wise, that seemed a little off for the rounded Franklin. Over the first three episodes, however, Douglas largely grows into the simple American suit and fur hat, the iconic Franklin uniform familiar to many impersonators roaming the streets of Philadelphia. At 79, Douglas brings a gleam in his eye, a sprightly energy, charm and wit to a man who was already past 70 when he arrived in Europe for the fourth time in his life in late 1776 as the first diplomat dispatched by the infant United States.

Among the greatest strengths of the show is the extent to which it embraces the uncertainty of the American experiment. Franklin’s arrival in France coincided with news of the fall of New York City to the British Army under General Sir William Howe. Through his first year living in Paris and its suburb, Passy, Franklin struggled to gain the attention of the French court as bad news continued to arrive from across the Atlantic.

The United States of Franklin is not predestined for greatness. It can barely survive, and merits only sneering dismissal from the European establishment. The show’s focus on interactions among French characters underscores for an American audience just how much of an afterthought the rebellion was in European diplomatic circles. Some Frenchmen were moved by the calls for liberty—Lafayette most prominently. But to the extent that French diplomats and officials cared about the American Revolution, it was only in the context of their century-long dispute with Great Britain.

The production further emphasizes the insecurity of the United States by allowing the French characters mostly to speak French, with English subtitles. In the first episode, it’s clear that Franklin speaks French, but often reverts to English to make his point most clearly. The show plays that for intentionally awkward humor at several points. Invited to a dinner, Franklin gives a long toast in English to stunned silence. Only when Beaumarchais translates the toast into French does the assembled crowd laugh and applaud at Franklin’s wit. Likewise, Temple spends significant time trying to learn the language, a little bit to help with his grandfather’s work but mostly to facilitate his teenage crushes on young Frenchwomen.

No production can satisfy every historian on the question of accuracy, not least because the dialogue must be wholly imagined or reconstructed from written sources. Dramatic cultural works are by definition works of imagination, not bound by the same rules that apply to histories. But a good standard is to look at whether moments of dramatic license matter for the audience’s understanding of the events of the past. For example, Franklin uses as a background device The Marriage of Figaro , a play written during the American Revolution by Beaumarchais. The play was first performed in public in 1784, long after Franklin’s diplomatic efforts in the mid-1770s. But Beaumarchais was working on the play in 1777–1778 during the events depicted in these episodes and the play is known for its anti-aristocratic message. Excerpting scenes, then, serves as a neat backdrop for Franklin’s work on behalf of an anti-monarchical fledgling republic.

An off note is the sequence in which the show dramatizes a rumor about the death of the Marquis de Lafayette. Shortly after arriving in America, Lafayette saw his first action with the Continental Army at the Battle of Brandywine near Philadelphia on Sept. 11, 1777. The battle overall was a disaster for the Americans, but Lafayette is widely credited with saving the retreat, ensuring that the army would live to fight another day despite the rout on the field. During the battle, Lafayette was shot in the leg, which the show depicts.

What follows is a muddle that illustrates the show’s difficulty with managing the time lags required for news to travel across the Atlantic. When reports of the battle first reach Paris, there is devastating news: the marquis is dead. This, in the unfolding of the show, turns out to be a false rumor, as Lafayette recuperates in Philadelphia and rejoins Washington’s staff.

With no way to think otherwise, Temple and friends gather and drink to their beloved, and supposedly lost, Gilbert. A dreamy sequence depicts Lafayette awakening and asking a young woman whether he’s in paradise, only to find out that no, he’s in Pennsylvania. We then launch back to France, where Lafayette’s letter to his wife confirms his survival.

But the rumor also never existed, historically speaking. There is no evidence that the French believed Lafayette had been killed for any amount of time, and Schiff does not discuss the issue in A Great Improvisation . In fact, one set of newspaper reprintings in Scotland did erroneously suggest that George Washington himself had been struck down at Brandywine, thanks to a printer’s error. But nothing about Lafayette. Whether or not the story is true, the writers could have used the fictionalized story to make a dramatic and historical point about the ways people experienced the passage of time during the 18 th century and the uncertainty that time lags added to any situation occurring at a long distance. Instead, we get a discount-rate punchline out of a Field of Dreams reference.

All that aside, Franklin puts the camera on the founder who was the most famous American in the world during his lifetime, but often takes a back seat to Washington, Adams, and Jefferson in popular culture. Things seem to be changing for Franklin, and perhaps this show will be followed by more depicting some of the many dramatic episodes in his life: his early career in Philadelphia, perhaps, or his career as a scientist that first brought him fame on both sides of the Atlantic. Early in his stay in Passy, the printing press he’d set up was destroyed. After repairing it with purloined and smuggled parts, Douglas’ Franklin steps back to admire his handiwork: “I have my voice back.”

Riding the new Rebellion Way: a cycling adventure through Norfolk’s history

A 232-mile cycle loop around the county offers pastoral charms, big skies and a look back at the region’s surprisingly defiant side

A s King Prasutagus of the Iceni was dying in AD60, he reneged on an agreement with the incumbent Roman emperor, Nero, to hand over his land in East Anglia. Instead, he passed joint ownership to his kin. Nero’s man on the ground took exception to this volte-face and ordered that the territory be annexed and his family humiliated.

Prasutagus’s widow – a certain Boudicca – was enraged. “In the glance of her eye most fierce, and her voice was harsh,” wrote historian Cassius Dio. Mounting her chariot, she led a revolt south and her army cut down about 70,000 Romans. So devastating was her attack, Nero nearly threw in the towel. Alas, legions were dispatched from Cambria (Wales) and Boudicca’s boys were defeated.

Now, nearly two millennia later, here I am in Norfolk at the site of Venta Icenorum, a Roman-built “model town” created to placate the remaining Iceni. This is my first stop on a group ride of Cycling UK’s new Norfolk route , The Rebellion Way, which was launched earlier this month. Thanks to the European Regional Development Fund’s Experience project (with funding secured prior to Brexit) this and five other regions across England and France have been developed to promote sustainable, off-season tourism. A guidebook and downloadable route is available on the Cycling UK website for £14.

The Rebellion Way’s 232-mile, multi-day loop serves up the pastoral charms and panoptic skies of one of England’s least-hilly counties. It is designed to be ridden in four to six days. The route’s name reveals a history of resistance that makes for an evocative ride. As well as passing through Norwich, King’s Lynn and Sandringham, it takes in Castle Acre, Little Walsingham and Holkham via forests and an endless-feeling coastline, and even dips into the Norfolk Broads.

I’m exploring the route with Cycling UK and Stef Amato, owner of Pannier , an adventure cycling operator. We began earlier in the day at Norwich railway station, heading south on quiet lanes and bridleways towards the chocolate box-like market town of Diss (likely to be the path Boudicca took on her way to burn London).

The scene is defiantly early autumn Norfolk: flat arable land fringed by hedgerows and old cottages of knapped flint and pink plaster, which accent the land’s modest curves. We’re soon tallying up the ancient churches, some eerily derelict.

Though the route is not difficult, the best bikes for this terrain fall into the “gravel” category: beefed-up road bikes with drop bars and knobbly tyres. I’m on a hybrid e-bike – part mountain, part tourer – lazily making use of the battery-powered assistance. If you don’t have your own, Visit Norfolk has information on cycle hire locations in the county. “The idea was to create a route that you can do whether you’re eight or 80,” says Guy Kesteven, the route’s curator. “There’s nothing very technical.”

While designed to be ridden independently, for those who prefer more help Rough Ride Guide will be running four-day self-guided tours (to include a support vehicle and two refreshments a day, along with evening meals and accommodation on request) starting in 2023.

Our stop for the night is a glamping spot near Diss called the Green Rabbit, which is open June to October, but there are many other options for the winter rider. Over dinner, Cycling UK’s Sophie Gordon tells me of another important story associated with this route – Kett’s Rebellion of 1549 . Robert Kett was driven to attempt sedition by the hardships inflicted on peasant workers (due to the enclosure of commons land) and amassed a force of 16,000 men to lay siege to Norwich.

Visiting Kett’s Heights , where they gathered, is an optional detour to start or finish the trip. I’m told this sylvan incline offers the city’s finest views, particularly over its two cathedrals, Catholic and Protestant.

The effects of archaic land ownership laws are still being felt by some today: 92% of England remains off limits . Of the public access ways, only 22% are open to cyclists. Many footpaths – verboten on two wheels – were given their spurious status by persuasive landowners and pliant councils in the 1960s. To ride them is to trespass. Part of Cycling UK’s mandate is to change these labels and increase riders’ access to the countryside – and the Norfolk route is the sixth long-distance trail that Cycling UK has launched.

“There are echoes of history in the Rebellion Way,” says Gordon. “We’re continuing to fight for access!”

Knowing exactly where you should and should not ride in England is a complex business; part of these routes’ appeal, then, is the guarantee of a trip that won’t breach civil decrees.

The next morning we’re off early. The ride is more varied: farmyards and hay barns give way to open meadows and wide skies. Before long we’re pedalling through Thetford Forest, the smell of pine resin and petrichor pleasant in the air.

We stop for a picnic lunch among the stately cedars of Lynford Arboretum, before pressing on to Duration Brewery . Miranda Hudson and her brew-master husband Derek Bates turn out beers and ales in a Grade II-listed building. It’s a Cycling UK accredited spot, which among other things means there are showers. My tasting flight spans fresh, wild and sour beers, along with a drop favoured by the royal butcher at nearby Sandringham (also on the route; great for cream teas).

The last lazy miles of the day are toward arcadian Castle Acre. I splash through a ford and stop to take in the ruins of its 1,000-year-old priory . Two black labradors come to say hello before being whistled away by an elderly gent in plus fours. It’s a place to lie in the grass while reading John Clare poems.

Fighter jets roar overhead – from nearby RAF Marham – as we arrive at our lodgings on the edge of the village, at The Pig Shed Motel . I eat a steak at the adjacent George & Dragon and conk out early knowing there’s more riding tomorrow.

The final stretch into King’s Lynn is more of the same green-and-pleasant breeziness. Sadly, my abridged trip doesn’t go as far as the north coast, past Holkham Hall and eccentric pilgrimage spot Walsingham (“ England’s Nazareth ”), which Kesteven assures me is the loop’s most dramatic stretch.

Norfolk is often described as “timeless”. To me, it felt more as if we were travelling back – to an age when golden-hour skies made men weep (and before the invention of village shops or cafes; pack a picnic). Riders looking for adrenaline kicks should eschew the Rebellion Way, but it’s catnip for the adventurer. And also for me, knocking on 40, as a civilised reintroduction to distance cycling. A gentle segue off the road and into history.

US restricts travel of embassy workers in Israel as Iran retaliation looms

The U.S. State Department issued a security alert Thursday for its personnel and their families in Israel, limiting where they can go amid increased concerns of an Iranian attack.

“Out of an abundance of caution, U.S. government employees and their family members are restricted from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv (including Herzliya, Netanya, and Even Yehuda), Jerusalem, and Be’er Sheva areas until further notice,’’ the alert says. “U.S. government personnel are authorized to transit between these three areas for personal travel.’’

There’s no reference in the alert to an impending Iranian strike, but Tehran has signaled it will retaliate for the April 1 assault on its consulate in Damascus, which killed seven senior Iranian military officers. Israel is widely believed to have launched that attack, although it has not claimed responsibility.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken reached out in the last day to the foreign ministers of China, Saudi Arabia and Turkey “to make clear that escalation is not in anyone’s interest and that countries should urge Iran not to escalate,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters Thursday.

With the Israel-Hamas war still raging past the six-month mark, the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem is also urging American citizens to be mindful of the risks of traveling to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, warning against visiting the embattled Palestinian territory.

“The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,’’ the alert says.

Israel to 'flood Gaza with aid': War of words with Iran also heats up

Developments:

∎ Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews demonstrated near a Jerusalem enlistment office, protesting a recent court ruling that means "Haredim" men will be drafted for the first time since Israel was founded in 1948.

∎ Israel is prepared for military confrontations beyond Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday, amid concern that Iran was getting ready to strike Israel. "Whoever harms us, we will harm them," he said.

∎ The Israel Defense Forces said it began a "precise, intelligence-based operation to strike terrorist infrastructure and eliminate operatives in central Gaza'' overnight into Thursday.

∎ Russia urged countries in the Middle East to show restraint to avoid "complete destabilization" of the region. Russia also warned its citizens against traveling to the Middle East.

Iran says it must punish Israel because UN didn't condemn embassy attack

Tehran must retaliate for the deadly attack on its consular compound in Damascus last week because the U.N. Security Council failed to condemn the strike or take any action against Israel, Iran’s U.N. mission said in a statement posted Thursday on the X platform.

“Had the U.N. Security Council condemned the Zionist regime’s reprehensible act of aggression on our diplomatic premises in Damascus and subsequently brought to justice its perpetrators, the imperative for Iran to punish this rogue regime might have been obviated,” the statement said.

Despite its threats, Iran has indicated to the U.S. through an intermediary that it will respond in a manner that avoids an escalation of hostilities with Israel and wouldn’t rush into it, Reuters reported. The U.S. has maintained it was not involved in or given advance notice of the attack.

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the April 1 attack on an Iranian consulate annex building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Syria that killed seven high-ranking Iranian military officers, including Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi of the elite Quds Force. Tensions between the nations have increased, and Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned Wednesday that “the evil regime made a mistake and must be punished.”

The top U.S. commander for the Middle East reportedly arrived in Israel on Thursday for meetings with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and other senior defense officials to discuss an anticipated military response from Iran,  Haaretz.com  reported. Gen. Erik Kurilla’s trip comes a day after Blinken spoke with Gallant and “reiterated the United States’ support for Israel’s security and made clear that the U.S. will stand with Israel against any threats by Iran and its proxies,” the State Department said in a statement.

U.S. Central Command, in an email to USA TODAY, declined to confirm Kurilla’s trip: “We do not discuss flag officer travel for operational security.”

Hamas official says cease-fire needed to account for hostages

A senior Hamas official on Thursday deflected questions from journalists concerning fears that many hostages could be dead. The possibility gained traction after Hamas said it was not sure it could provide 40 living Israeli civilian captives as part of a cease-fire proposal. Dr. Basem Naim, a member of political bureau of Hamas, said a cease-fire agreement is needed to provide time and safety to collect information on the captured Israelis. They are held in different places by different militant groups − and some are "under the rubble, killed with our own people" and heavy equipment is required to find them, he said.

No one is asking about the thousands of Palestinians kidnapped by Israel since the Hamas-led attack Oct. 7 that ignited the war, he said.

"The most outrageous is the repeated questions regarding the hostages in Gaza, how many alive or dead, does Hamas rejected the proposal because it can’t release 40 hostages in the first phase, etc ..." he said in a statement posted on Telegram. "The lives of their people aren’t more precious than ours."

UNICEF aid convoy hit with gunfire, turned back from Gaza

A UNICEF convoy was hit by gunfire Wednesday as it tried to deliver aid to northern Gaza, the latest in a series of violent obstructions faced by aid workers in the enclave.

"The incident has been raised with relevant Israeli authorities," UNICEF said in a statement. "Sadly, humanitarians continue to face risks in delivering lifesaving aid."

The incident occurred nine days after a World Central Kitchen aid convoy was attacked by Israeli rockets, killing seven workers − and the same day Israel promised to greatly increase the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a USA TODAY request for comment on the incident.

UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram told Al Jazeera she was in one of the vehicles at a “holding point” area at a checkpoint. She said three rounds hit the car where she was sitting. The mission had been authorized and the Israeli authorities knew about the convoy, Ingram said. After the shooting, Israeli authorities continued to delay the convoy and it eventually was forced to return to Rafah.

“So those life-saving supplies never made it to the children in northern Gaza,” Ingram said.

Israeli commander pitches aid plan to Red Cross, other agencies

Israel's Southern Command chief, Major General Yaron Finkelman, met with representatives of U.N. agencies, the Red Cross, IMC, USAID and the American Humanitarian Coordinator as part of "increasing coordination and cooperation on the issue of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip," the Israeli military announced.

The meeting comes as Israel announced plans to greatly increase access to humanitarian aid for Gaza residents. Plans include a new border crossing designed make it easier to bring humanitarian supplies from overseas and from Jordan to the east.

“These breakthroughs have a direct impact on the flow of aid – we plan to flood Gaza with aid," Gallant said. "It will also streamline security checks and strengthen our work with international partners.”

Sunak faces Tory revolt over smoking ban plan

MPs will debate the legislation for the first time on Tuesday, just over a fortnight before crunch local elections

Rishi Sunak is facing a revolt next week over his proposal to ban smoking after it was criticised by two former prime ministers and his ex-home secretary.

MPs will debate the legislation for the first time on Tuesday, just over a fortnight before local elections that could prompt fresh calls for the Prime Minister to be replaced as Conservative leader.

Under the plan, the smoking age would be raised each year until it applied to the whole population, while disposable vapes would be banned outright and reusable ones limited to four flavours.

Tory MPs will be given a free vote, meaning they can oppose the Government without facing any disciplinary consequences.

One backbencher estimated that around 100 of his colleagues could defy Mr Sunak, which would make it the biggest rebellion of his premiership. However, even a major rebellion is unlikely to derail the legislation because it has Labour’s support .

The Government’s working majority is now 51, meaning only 26 Tory rebels would be needed to leave Mr Sunak reliant on Labour votes. To force a defeat, at least 274 Tories would need to rebel, subject to how other parties voted. 

That is highly unlikely because it would involve dozens of ministers voting against the Government.

A source close to Suella Braverman, who was sacked as home secretary by Mr Sunak in November, told The Telegraph she was “not a fan” of the proposals.

It is understood that Liz Truss, the former prime minister, will vote against the ban on Tuesday, and that she hopes to catch the eye of Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Commons Speaker, to make a speech criticising her successor’s flagship policy.

Ms Truss has called the proposals “profoundly unconservative” and an example of the “nanny state” in action, prompting Mr Sunak to respond that there was “[nothing] unconservative about caring for our children’s health”.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson called Mr Sunak’s plan “absolutely nuts” as he criticised the wider state of the Conservative Party at an event in Canada.

Speaking at a gathering of conservatives in Ottawa on Wednesday, the former prime minister said: “We are, on the whole, in favour of freedom, and it is that single Anglo-Saxon idea of freedom that I think unites conservatives, or should unite conservatives.

“And when I look at some of the things that we are doing now, or that are being done in the name of conservatism, I think they are absolutely nuts. When the party of Winston Churchill wants to ban cigars, donnez-moi un break, as they say in Quebec. It’s just mad.”

Although dozens of Tory MPs are understood to have concerns about the smoking ban, rebels are split about whether to oppose the Bill outright or attempt to amend it. There will not be the opportunity for changes until it moves to its report stage following Tuesday’s vote.

Philip Davies, a senior Tory backbencher, confirmed that he would vote against the policy at its third reading further down the line, while another prominent figure said: “I would be surprised if the noes were less than 100.”

Sir John Hayes, the chairman of the Common Sense Group of Tory backbenchers, said he supported parts of the Prime Minister’s plan, including his war on vaping, but could not vote for the proposals in their current form.

Sir John said: “I totally support the crackdown on vaping. There’s good things you can do, but you can’t have this nonsense of people aged 50 able to smoke a cigar and people 49 not able to. Labour has repeatedly confirmed its support for a phased smoking ban. Wes Streeting, the shadow health secretary, last month told The Telegraph’s Politics Newsletter he would “ come down like a tonne of bricks on the vaping industry”.

“It’s not universally popular in Rishi Sunak’s party, but he’s got the assurance of knowing that Labour votes can help get it through,” he said.

The vote will mark the start of what could be a difficult few weeks for Mr Sunak, with the Tories projected to lose as many as half of their councillors up for election on May 2 .

House Speaker Mike Johnson is negotiating with White House to advance Ukraine aid

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Mike Johnson is negotiating with the White House as he prepares for the treacherous task of advancing wartime funding for Ukraine and Israel through the House, a top House Republican said Thursday.

House Republican Leader Steve Scalise told reporters that Johnson had been talking with White House officials about a package that would deviate from the Senate’s $95 billion foreign security package and include several Republican demands. It comes after Johnson has delayed for months on advancing aid that would provide desperately needed ammunition and weaponry for Kyiv, trying to find the right time to advance a package that will be a painful political lift.

“There’s been no agreement reached,” Scalise said. “Obviously there would have to be an agreement reached not just with the White House, but with our own members.”

Johnson, R-La., is being stretched between a Republican conference deeply divided in its support for Ukraine, as well as two presidential contenders at odds over the U.S.’s posture towards the rest of the world. President Joe Biden has repeatedly chastised Republicans for not helping Ukraine, saying they are doing the bidding of Russian President Vladimir Putin and hurting U.S. security. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate, has said he would negotiate an end to the conflict as he tries to push the U.S. to a more isolationist stance.

The Republican speaker is set to travel to the former president’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida on Friday to meet with Trump and has been consulting him in recent weeks on the Ukraine funding to gain his support — or at least prevent him from openly opposing the package.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin, an Oklahoma Republican who often works closely with House lawmakers, said this week he and Trump have spoken with Johnson “in depth” about how to advance Ukraine aid. It is not clear whether Trump would lend any political support, but Mullin said he was hoping to get the former president behind the package, especially now that Johnson’s job is at stake.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, has threatened to try to oust Johnson as speaker and warned that advancing funding for Ukraine would help build her case that GOP lawmakers should select a new speaker.

Meanwhile, Johnson has been in conversations with the White House about legislation that would structure some of the funding for Kyiv as loans, pave the way for the U.S. to tap frozen Russian central bank assets and include other policy changes.

Johnson has also been pushing for the Biden administration to lift a pause on approvals for Liquefied Natural Gas exports. At times, he has also demanded policy changes at the U.S. border with Mexico.

“This becomes a more dangerous world with Russia in Kyiv,” said Rep. Don Bacon, a Republican who supports aiding Ukraine. “So we’ve just got to find a the smart way to get a bill passed that we can get out and back to the Senate.”

Still, Johnson is facing a practically open rebellion from a group of hardline House conservatives who are dissatisfied with the way he has led the House. With a narrow and divided majority, Johnson has been forced to work with Democrats to advance practically any major legislation.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Thursday that the “only path forward” for the House was a vote on the Senate’s national security package. He also suggested that Democrats would help Johnson hold onto the speaker’s gavel if he did so.

While Democrats have pressured Johnson to put the Senate package to a vote, they also may be divided on a vote as a growing number oppose sending Israel offensive weaponry while it engages in a campaign in Gaza that has killed thousands of civilians.

The Biden administration, which would administer any military funding, has issued stern warnings to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that future U.S. support depends on the swift implementation of new steps to protect civilians and aid workers.

“If we want to prevent handing Putin a victory in Europe, the House should do the right thing for democracy and pass the Senate’s aid package now,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday in a floor speech.
