A search was underway after a man went overboard from a Norwegian cruise ship that was returning to Miami during a "Headbangers Boat" trip.

The incident happened early Friday morning as the Norwegian Pearl was sailing near the Bahamas on its way to Miami, a spokesperson for the cruise line said.

A search was underway to find the passenger, a 41-year-old man, by the U.S. Coast Guard.

"The investigation is ongoing, and we will share updates as appropriate. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time," the spokesperson said in a statement.

The ship was on a roundtrip from Miami to Nassau and then back to Miami as part of the "Headbangers Boat" cruise.

A number of metal bands were performing during the cruise, including Lamb of God, Mastodon and Gwar, according to the trip's website .

The ship left on Halloween and was expected to return to Miami on Saturday morning.

“On the early morning of Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, Norwegian Pearl was notified that a 41-year-old male guest went overboard while the ship was sailing near the Bahamas on its way to Miami. The authorities have been notified and the United States Coast Guard search and rescue operation is underway. The investigation is ongoing, and we will share updates as appropriate. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

According to several attendees, a man has been reported going overboard on this year’s inaugural ‘ Headbangers Boat ‘ cruise. That event, which was curated by Lamb Of God , set sail from Miami, FL aboard the Norwegian Pearl on October 31st and is scheduled to wrap up tomorrow, November 04th.

A number of individuals claiming to be aboard the cruise have since stated online that the ship docked as rescue operations were launched for the individual, who apparently went overboard late last night.

Several of the attendees have commented on Reddit on the matter, and mentioned choppy waters seemingly played a part in the incident. Theprp.com has also heard similar reports from individuals associated with the cruise of a man having gone overboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard told WFLA they are currently conducting a search for the man who was last seen 20 miles east of Cay Say Bahamas around 4 a.m.

The Coast Guard is assisting the Royal Bahamas Defense Force in the search.

Earlier today, one passenger on Headbangers Boat posted on social media: "Update - around 3:45 am the cruise ship we are on NCL Pearl - Headbangers boat had called a code Oscar starboard side. Confirmed approximately 30 minutes later. The ship has been in a search pattern for the man overboard since then. No luck. Overboard survival rates are slim. We have no news whether he jumped or fell. But intoxication was surely a factor. Scarey and sad. The whole boat of headbangers is a somber one today."

Another person wrote: "My son is on this Headbangers Boat tour, and this morning security was chasing a guy, and he jumped from a higher deck towards the back of the boat, and went overboard".

According to Cruise Critic , there are no specific statistics compiled by the U.S. government about how often going overboard happens on cruise ships. In general, there are about 20 incidents reported a year. "Survival rates depend on several factors, including whether the person was injured by impact with the water or part of the ship on the way down and how quickly the person can be rescued by the cruise ship crew or Coast Guard," the web site notes. "Wind and weather factors also play a role in a rescue mission. If the seas are rough, it not only makes it difficult for a person to swim, it's also tough for emergency staff to find them in the water. Other factors include the temperature of the sea; hypothermia can begin to set in when the water is less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit."

Headbangers Boat , the inaugural metal cruise headlined by Lamb of God, experienced a tragic turn early Friday morning (November 3rd) when a 41-year-old male passenger went overboard. A search and rescue mission is currently underway.

In a statement provided to Rock Feed , a spokesperson for the Norwegian Cruise Line offered the following details:

“On the early morning of Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, Norwegian Pearl was notified that a 41-year-old male guest went overboard while the ship was sailing near the Bahamas on its way to Miami. The authorities have been notified and the United States Coast Guard search and rescue operation is underway. The investigation is ongoing, and we will share updates as appropriate. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

The incident sadly casts a pall over what by all accounts was turning out to be a very festive metal experience. As we’ve been reporting, via our on-board photographer, the cruise has had some memorable moments thus far, like Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe officiating a wedding between two of the passengers, as well as a hot tub circle pit breaking out during Hatebreed’s set.

In addition to Lamb of God and Hatebreed, the cruise has featured performances from Mastodon, GWAR, Testament, and several more acts. The ship set sail from Miami on Halloween (October 31st), and visited the Bahamas. The original schedule had it returning to Miami to disembark on Saturday (November 4th).

Search Ended for Man Who Fell Overboard on Lamb of God’s Headbangers Boat Cruise

UPDATE (Nov. 5): Per  Metal Hammer , the search for the 41-year-old man who fell over during Lamb of God’s Headbangers Boat cruise this past Friday was “called off after nine hours,” with the Norwegian Pearl subsequently docking into the port of Miami.

Lambgoat clarifies: “Amidst the confusion, reports emerged from individuals on board the cruise liner, indicating that the ship's announcements assured the continuation of the planned trip. Nevertheless, it has now been confirmed that these assurances were never verified, and the ship ultimately returned to . . . Miami.”

Naturally, Lamb of God have since issued a corresponding statement [via Metal Hammer]: “We're deeply saddened to have learned that a member of our community was involved in a tragic incident. Sending love and light to their family and loved ones.”

Yesterday (Nov. 4), former ‘Headbangers Ball’ host – and cruise co-host – Riki Rachtman uploaded a Facebook Live video about the news. In it, he states [transcribed by Metal Hammer]: 

I'm just gonna start by talking about this because it's something that weighs heavy on our heart and all the bands and all the people that were on the cruise. Unfortunately, somebody went over. There was a man overboard. And I know what I've heard and I'm not gonna share anything until it already comes out. But somebody went off the ship at about four o'clock in the morning. Everybody was devastated when we were woken up by the calls, and then they spent nine hours trying to find this person with the Coast Guard. And I get sentimental when I say this, but at about nine o'clock in the morning, they made the announcement that the search was called off. And when that happened, it was devastating and it hurt everybody when you walked around the ship. This metal community, and I don't talk about this 'cause you know I love so many different genres of music, but the metal community, especially the people on this boat, is just that, it's a community, and we lost one of our own. My thoughts and prayers are for the families and friends and it was just so tragic.

A Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson has issued a statement confirming that a man attending the Headbangers Boat festival cruise headlined by Lamb of God went overboard this morning (Nov. 3). Search and rescue efforts were conducted and it has been verified by Loudwire that the festival activities have since resumed and the boat is headed back to Miami.

"On the early morning of Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, Norwegian Pearl was notified that a 41-year-old male guest went overboard while the ship was sailing near the Bahamas on its way to Miami. The authorities have been notified and the United States Coast Guard search and rescue operation is underway. The investigation is ongoing, and we will share updates as appropriate. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time," the Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson told Rock Feed this afternoon.

The festival cruise, which also features Mastodon , Testament , Hatebreed , GWAR , Municipal Waste , Shadows Fall , God Forbid , Lacuna Coil and more, has continued with scheduled performances after the above statement was provided. The first artist to perform was Hatebreed, and it's reported that frontman Jamey Jasta tried to remain positive and create a sense of community and togetherness for festivalgoers onboard.

About Overboard Situations on Cruises

A 2017 report by Conde Nast Traveler  details all of the aspects of an overboard situation on a cruise ship.

Passenger safety is an important part of the cruise business and owners and operators maintain certain regulations and procedures, including prevention, warning systems and emergency preparedness.

Heights of railing and balconies, alcohol consumption, surveillance cameras (monitored and unmonitored), sensors, a trained staff are just some of the related factors in maintaining passenger safety.

In the event a passenger goes overboard, an emergency protocol is followed with on-deck crews attending to the situation while aid may also come from the U.S. Coast Guard, nearby ships and other various authorities with means to assist.

While they are rare occurrences, overboard situations are reported to have an estimated 85 to 90 percent fatality rate. Complicating search and rescue efforts and the chance of survival are other contributing factors such as the body's response to the temperature of the water and the fall, potentially coming in contact with the ship's hull before landing in the water.

A 41-year-old man went missing after going overboard during the “Headbangers Boat” cruise this weekend on Norwegian Pearl.

Confirmed by Norwegian Cruise Line, the vessel was en route back to Miami from the Bahamas when the incident occurred.

The line issued a statement saying. “On the early morning of Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, Norwegian Pearl was notified that a 41-year-old male guest went overboard while the ship was sailing near the Bahamas on its way to Miami.”

177 miles southeast of Miami

Following the search pattern, the guest went overboard approximately 177 miles southeast east of Miami.

The weather in the area on early Friday morning was choppy, with wind gusts up to 30 knots. The ship searched for nine hours before being released by the US Coast Guard.

The statement went on to read, “The authorities have been notified, and the United States Coast Guard search and rescue operation is underway. The investigation is ongoing, and we will share updates as appropriate. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

Cruise co-host speaks on event

One of the cruise co-hosts, Riki Rachtman, former host of MTV Hangbanger Ball TV show, spoke on the incident during a Facebook Live on Saturday morning.

“Everybody was devastated when we were woken up by the calls, and then they spent nine hours trying to find this person with the Coast Guard. And I get sentimental when I say this, but at about nine o’clock in the morning, they made the announcement that the search was called off. Last week, a guest went overboard on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas as it left Barcelona. That guest was found shortly after he went overboard .

A guest aboard a Norwegian Cruise ship jumped overboard on March 11, according to a spokesperson for the cruise line.

In a statement to WDSU, the staff member says a 31-year-old male guest aboard the Norwegian Breakaway jumped Friday while the ship was sailing near Costa Maya, Mexico. Authorities were immediately notified, and a search and rescue operation began. As of Saturday evening, the guest has not been found.

New Orleans is the homeport for the Breakaway vessel with a capacity of nearly 4,000 guests. The ship is scheduled for another 7-day voyage leaving from New Orleans starting Sunday, March 13.

“During the afternoon of Friday, March 11, 2022, a report was made that a 31-year-old male guest aboard Norwegian Breakaway jumped overboard while the ship was sailing near Costa Maya, Mexico. 20-year-old man missing after jumping off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, report says

• A 20-year-old man on holiday with his family went overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise. 
• The man, who's been missing since early Thursday morning, may have jumped, a report said. 
• The US Coast Guard has launched a search operation. 

A 20-year-old man who was vacationing with his family on a cruise may have jumped overboard, The New York Post reported.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that a passenger, whose identity has not been revealed, went overboard near The Bahamas at about 4 a.m. on Thursday and has been missing since then.

The US Coast Guard launched a search for the passenger on Thursday.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Business Insider that the cruise line's "Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time."

Bryan Sims, a fellow cruise passenger, told The New York Post that he'd hung out with the passenger in the hot tub until 3:30 a.m. Sims said the man appeared to be "pretty drunk."

Sims told the Post that after leaving the hot tub, they encountered the passenger's father while approaching the elevators.

"His dad was fussing at him for being drunk," Sims said.

Deborah Morrison, another passenger on board the cruise, told the Post that "there was a lot of yelling and that the crew was alerted immediately."

"The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search," the Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.

The Liberty of the Seas departed from South Florida and was 57 miles from Great Inagua in The Bahamas when the passenger went overboard.

The cruise ship has 18 decks and can accommodate up to 3,634 passengers. It's served by a crew of about 1,300.

The chances of falling overboard on a cruise ship are extremely low .

In 2023, about 31 million passengers traveled on a cruise, and at least 10 people went overboard, with two of them surviving, Business Insider reported .

"Even one incident is one too many," a spokesperson for Cruise Lines International Association told Business Insider, adding that "the vast majority of cases are either reckless behavior or some form of intentional act. People don't just inadvertently fall over the side of a ship."

Last month, a 23-year-old man who felt seasick fell overboard from the MSC Euribia cruise ship while crossing the North Sea in Europe and was presumed dead.

In December, an MSC Cruises passenger jumped from one of its ships while sailing from Europe to South America.

According to a CLIA report, only 28.2% of passengers who fell overboard between 2009 and 2019 were successfully rescued.

New Orleans – A 31-year old male passenger aboard the Norweigian Cruise ship jumped overboard on March 11 while sailing near Costa Maya, Mexico. Search and rescue operation began immediately, but the guest has not been found as reported on Saturday.

New Orleans is the homeport for the Breakway ship, which can accommodate nearly 4,000 guests. The ship is en route for another 7-day voyage leaving the port on March 13.

The NCL spokesperson, in his statement, said, “Unfortunately, the guest is still not found, and our prayers and thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.” 

This is the second such incident since the beginning of this year. After being detained by security for a disturbance at the swimming pool in February, a woman jumped overboard the Carnival Valor ship.

Cruise Passenger, 23, Reportedly Falls Overboard After Texting Wife He Felt Seasick

A 23-year-old passenger is presumed dead  after falling from the MSC Euribia cruise ship, according to multiple reports .

Liam Jones, a social work student from Scotland, was last seen on March 16 while on a seven-day tour cruise from Southampton to Amsterdam with his family, the  Daily Record reports .

Jones’ wife, Sophia Mcphee, 20, told the outlet that Jones texted her right before his disappearance to tell her he was feeling seasick. 

“He’s just gone. I’m never going to see him again,” Mcphee told the Daily Record . “I’m devastated. I have so many questions, and I’m not getting any answers to what’s happened.”

Mcphee told U.K.’s Metro that Jones’ sister broke the news to her on the phone and explained that security camera footage showed Jones falling overboard. 

“She said there had been an accident and Liam ‘wasn’t coming back.’ She then said she had seen CCTV and he’d gone overboard,” Mcphee recalled. 

But Mcphee said she hasn’t been updated on the investigation since hearing about his disappearance. She told the Daily Record that the last time she had seen Jones was on March 14 when he traveled to visit family in Glasgow before they boarded the cruise the following day.  

“I’ve been trying to get in contact with the MSC since Monday, but it’s been a headache,” Mcphee told the Daily Record. “They’re not getting back to me.”

MSC Cruises didn’t immediately respond to HuffPost’s requests for comment. 

Police reportedly boarded the cruise ship on March 22 to investigate the incident upon its return to Southampton, Metro reports. 

The cruise line suspects the man intentionally went overboard, Fox10 News reports .

In a statement to the Daily Record, MSC Cruises said it is “deeply saddened” by the news of Jones’ disappearance. 

“A passenger on board MSC Euribia was reported missing, who we believe intentionally went overboard, on 17 March as the ship sailed from Hamburg to Rotterdam,” the cruise line said. 

“The authorities have been informed and have been on board the vessel. We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time,” the statement continued. “Out of respect for the family’s privacy we will refrain from disclosing any additional information.”
