As for upgrade perks, they can vary depending on the cruise line and the specific upgrade you secure. It’s worth noting that the higher your bid, the better your chances of securing an upgrade. Researching the available upgrade options will allow you to make informed decisions and increase your chances of a successful bid.
Research the Available Upgrade Options
Explore the vast array of luxurious enhancements that await you onboard, elevating your celebrity cruise experience to new heights. When it comes to upgrading your celebrity cruise, it’s important to research the available upgrade options thoroughly.
Begin by familiarizing yourself with the various upgrade categories such as staterooms, amenities, and services offered. Take note of the specific upgrades that interest you the most, whether it’s a spacious suite with a private balcony or access to exclusive restaurants and lounges.
Additionally, consider the upgrade bidding strategy that works best for you. Some cruisers prefer to bid early, while others wait until closer to the sailing date. Either way, setting a budget for your upgrade bid is crucial to ensure you stay within your means.
Now that we’ve explored the available upgrade options, let’s delve into how to set a budget for your upgrade bid.
Set a Budget for Your Upgrade Bid
Make sure you carefully consider your financial goals and priorities when determining how much you can comfortably allocate towards improving your cruise experience. Here are some tips for setting a budget for cruise upgrades and factors to consider when determining upgrade bid amount:
Evaluate your overall vacation budget and decide how much you’re willing to spend on an upgrade.
Research the average cost of the upgrades you’re interested in to get an idea of the price range.
Consider the value you’d receive from the upgrade and how much it’d enhance your cruise experience.
Take into account any other expenses you may have during the cruise, such as excursions or specialty dining.
Setting a budget for your upgrade bid is essential to ensure you don’t overspend and regret it later. Once you’ve determined your budget, you can move on to the next step of determining the value of the upgrade.
Determine the Value of the Upgrade
Imagine the thrill of discovering just how much more enjoyable your cruise experience could be by unlocking the hidden value of an upgrade. Determining the value of the upgrade is an essential step in bidding for a celebrity cruise upgrade.
Evaluating the cost and benefits of the upgrade will help you make an informed decision. Start by researching the amenities and features included in the upgraded cabin category. Consider the additional space, luxurious furnishings, and exclusive perks that come with the upgrade. Compare these benefits to the cost of the upgrade to determine if it aligns with your budget and preferences.
By carefully evaluating the value of the upgrade, you can ensure that you’re making the most of your bidding opportunity. Now that you’ve determined the value, it’s time to submit your bid and potentially elevate your cruise experience to new heights.
Submit Your Bid
Ready to take your cruise experience to the next level? It’s time to submit your personalized offer and set sail towards a world of luxury and indulgence.
When it comes to bidding on a celebrity cruise upgrade, there are some advantages you should consider. First, bidding allows you to have a chance at getting a higher category stateroom at a lower price. Second, it gives you the opportunity to potentially enjoy exclusive amenities and perks that come with the upgraded accommodation.
To make your bid more successful, here are some tips to keep in mind. Start with a reasonable offer, based on your budget and the value of the upgrade. Be flexible with your bid amount, as it increases your chances of winning. And finally, monitor the bidding process closely to stay updated on any changes or new offers.
So, let’s dive in and explore the advantages of bidding and some tips for successful bidding.
Monitor the Bidding Process

This is an exciting time as you track the progress and analyze the results. Keep an eye on the bid tracker and stay updated with any notifications or emails you receive regarding the status of your bid.
It’s important to stay engaged and proactive during this time. Take note of how the bidding is going and whether there are any changes in the number of bids or the current highest bid. This information will help you determine whether you need to increase your bid if necessary.
So, let’s dive into the subsequent section and learn about how to increase your bid if necessary.
Increase Your Bid if Necessary
If you’re sailing towards the horizon of a better experience, don’t hesitate to set your sights higher and wave your flag of determination by increasing your offer.

Stay within your comfort zone: While it’s important to increase your bid, don’t go overboard. Set a limit that you’re comfortable with to avoid overspending.
By employing these strategies, you can increase your chances of securing the upgrade you desire.
Now let’s move on to the next section where you’ll learn how to receive confirmation of your upgrade.

I got upgraded & saved $2,000 on my celebrity cruise, cruising with celebrity cruises is not cheap..
Known for their luxury cruising, this subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Group, which of course also operates Royal Caribbean International, will set you back several more dollars than some of the other cruise lines. However, if you know how to do it, you can get a very good deal on some of the best rooms on their ships. I just saved almost $2,000 on my upcoming cruise on Celebrity’s brand new ship, Celebrity Beyond, and now I’m going to tell you exactly how to do the same.
I typically cruise solo. The majority of my cruises have been solo, and all of the future cruises I have booked are also solo. I mention this because Celebrity does offer some solo cabins on their E-class, or Edge-class, ships. These rooms, known as the Edge Single Stateroom with Infinite Veranda, feature a queen bed and desk, 184 square feet of living space, and a 42 square foot Veranda. I typically book them because, as a solo cruiser, they are the cheapest rooms I can book on an Edge-class ship, always cheaper than even interior staterooms!
However, despite booking this room a few times, I have yet to stay in one.
Celebrity, like several of the other cruise lines, offers a bidding program for upgrades on their ships. Called MoveUp, the offer to bid for an upgrade will typically be delivered to your inbox roughly a month before sailing. You will be presented with several options of staterooms that are all higher categories than the stateroom in which you are currently booked.
In my case, I was presented with the option of bidding on a Concierge Class stateroom with a minimum bid of $100 per person (you have to pay for double occupancy, even for solo travelers – so double the bid amount), an Aqua Class stateroom with a minimum bid of $200 per person, a Sky Suite for a minimum of $800 per person, and options up to an Edge Villa for well over $5,000 per person. These are all minimum bids, so of course, you want to up your bid a bit from the minimum to increase your odds of “winning” an upgrade. You do have to provide a credit card at the time you place your bid, as you will be charged immediately once your bid is accepted. You have no right of refusal once your bid is accepted – you will be on the hook for the total amount.
Ultimately I bid $125 ($250 total) for the Concierge Class and $225 ($450 total) for the Aqua Class stateroom. You can revisit the MoveUp page and modify, cancel, or add to your bids as much as you’d like before the bid is accepted. About 10 days before my sailing I checked and the Concierge bid had been marked as “expired”, while the Aqua bid was still “pending”, and I had no option to modify or cancel anything. From previous experiences with MoveUp, I knew that this meant it was only a matter of time before I’d receive the official email stating my stateroom had been upgraded.
Exactly one week from my sail date I received the email confirming my bid was accepted! I had been upgraded from my Deck 6 solo veranda to an Aqua Class veranda on Deck 10. I wouldn’t say I liked the initial Aqua Class room assignment that Celebrity gave me, so I gave them a call and they were happy to change my stateroom, so long as it was in the same category.
Once I had been officially upgraded I checked the current prices of the two categories, and realized there was about a $2,000 difference in the price of the two rooms! Taking off the $450 I paid for the upgrade, my MoveUp experience saved me about $1500 !
The bottom line is this…
Using MoveUp, or RoyalUp if you’re sailing on Royal Caribbean, can save you thousands of dollars and get you into a much nicer room than the one you initially booked. While it’s not always guaranteed to happen, since the ship could sell out leaving no rooms to be bid on, you could technically book the cheapest room available on the ship with your original booking, and use MoveUp to get into the room you want closer to sailing date.
The Discussion
Thanks I’ve been learning a lot from your content areas. Ready to try this out 🙂
Thank you, Rosanne! I am so happy you have found the content useful. I hope you get a great upgrade, too! 🙂
I just got moved up from interior room to aquaclass. On this particular sailing the aquaclass comes with the basice wifi and basic drink package. Do you know if those extra perks will still be included or do we still have to buy those separately? Thank you for your help
Hi Christina, unfortunately the answer is no. You will keep any packages you had (or didn’t have) on your original stateroom. With MoveUp you just get a room upgrade and you’ll have to add the WiFi and drink package separately.
Hi Zach, Would you advise does it include dining in Blu I win the bid for the Aqua stateroom? Thanks in advance.
Yes, it does! I just returned from Celebrity Solstice where I was upgraded to Aqua for only $200 total and enjoyed Blu several nights of the voyage.
Hello ! I have read conflicting info on this exact question. Do you have any advice on how to find out the actual answer???
Check out the FAQs on this page, particularly the one about promotions:
Thank you for the information! Love it! Have you bid many times before? Do you know how easy is it to change the room if they give you an upgrade but it’s to the very front or back of the ship or above a bar or something? Can you request a section of the ship? Also, if 2 people in the room, do you each have to bid? Just curious ! Thank you!
I have bid and been successful a few times in the past. It is quite easy to change the room so long as you’re within the same stateroom category. Just call up Celebrity and let them know you’d like to pick a new room. Each person in the room is included in the bid for the room and if you’re solo you have to bid for 2 people. Whatever price you select as your bid is multiplied by the number of people in the room and that is your final upgrade price.
Thank you! One other question is if we get a Retreat level room on move up, will we have access to the Retreat pool area?
You sure will! You will not receive any perks like drink packages and internet. But you will still have exclusive access to Luminae, Retreat, etc.
Great information 👍
I have already booked and paid in full. If I bid let’s say a sky suite for $2000 and got accepted, is the $2000 on top of what I have already paid or do I get refunded for my initial payment and then get charged with the bid amount?
No, this bid amount is on top of whatever you have already paid. You will receive no refund.
Hi! So an upgrade from lower class going to a Sky Suite Class, what are the benefits of getting this upgrade? It looks like the perks (wifi, onboard credits, drink package) are not included. What about the access to premium dining exclusive to that class, a personal butler, welcoming champagne, access to private Sky Suite area of ship (if available), premium embark/disembarking, etc.
This can be deceiving as you could end up paying quite a bit more for just a room upgrade not understanding a handful of these things aren’t included!!! Are you literally just paying for the room at this point?
So in this instance, you would keep any perks associated with your original reservation. So if you did not have a drinks package, you still would not have one despite being in a suite. However, you will still receive all of the access, butler, service, and priority that come exclusively to Suite Guests.
Just need clarification in Moveup: if I already have infinite veranda room and am bidding for sky suite, I am only getting the room/retreat bonus? Not the premium Drinks or WiFi?
You are correct. You are only getting the room and access to Luminae and the Retreat. You will not receive premium drinks, WiFi, or the OBC associated with a Retreat booking.
Our cruise leaves in 7 days. We have an Ocean View room. We bid on a veranda and an Aqua Class. As of today the Veranda bid says pending and we can no longer modify or cancel this bid. The Aqua class bid can still be modified or cancelled. Do you think we at least have the veranda and possibly the Aquaclass since bids can still be modified?
In my past experience once it can no longer be modified but still says Pending, that likely means your bid has been accepted and you will soon see the charge to your card and receive the email confirmation. Usually the remaining bids will be marked Expired when this happens, though, so I am not sure what to think about your Aqua bid.
I received an email for a chance to bid on an upgrade. I made a bid on a Royal Suite. If they accept the amount, will that total be added to amount I already paid for our cruise ?
Hi Rhonda. Yes, the amount you have bid will be an additional charge on top of what you have already paid for your current stateroom.
Hi. If I bid and am successfull in upgrading from a veranda to an aqua class room, do I get the unlimited persian room access and the blu restaurant?
Yes, you do! The best perks of having Aqua Class, in my opinion!

The Ultimate Guide to Bidding for Upgrades on Your Cruise
Everyone likes the idea of getting a good deal on an upgraded cabin, and a lot of cruise lines now offer this opportunity through a bidding process. There are a lot of mysteries about how this works and what the secret to winning an upgrade bid is, so we’re going to help clear this up. We’ll explain the bidding process, share some reasons cruise lines like this system (and they’re not all the reasons you’ll expect), and tell you what to do and what not to do in order to maximize your chances of winning an upgrade on your next cruise.
Bidding for Cabin Upgrades: The Background
Not long ago the way to get an upgrade was to either call your travel agent or cruise line and ask for the price, or hope for some magical upgrade surprise. This wasn’t ideal for cruise lines, because it meant that there was a chance they were leaving money on the table when people didn’t know to ask about upgrades.
A few years ago, however, most cruise lines switched to a bidding system. In fact, most of them use the same system - a product called Premium Upgrade from a company called Plusgrade. They provide the website (branded to look like the cruise line) and logic that ties into the cruise lines and helps drive this. In fact, if you’ve ever bid for an upgrade on a flight, train ticket, or hotel room, you’ve probably used Plusgrade’s product before.
Which Cruise Lines Let Guests Bid for Upgrades?
Most, but not all of the big name cruise lines in North America offer this as an option now. This includes Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, MSC, Princess, Virgin Voyages , and others. One big name that’s missing? Carnival. Carnival Cruise Line actually has their own process where, weeks or days before a cruise, they email guests with a link to a special upgrade offer for them. Guests can take it or leave it.
After you’ve booked a cruise, you may see references to upgrade programs on the website, in an email, or in the cruise line’s app. While many cruise lines have their own names for this, such as Level Upgrade, MoveUp, or Royal Up, it’s all the same idea, and it’s all driven by Plusgrade.
How to Bid for Cabin Upgrades
Some time before your cruise you’ll have the opportunity to go onto a website and see a list of stateroom types that you can bid on. There’s usually a short description of the room, some photographs, and a slider that lets you adjust your bid. The minimum bid varies on the sailing, the room type, and what you’ve already paid (or your existing room type). Once you decide how much you’d like to bid, you put in your credit card or other payment information. Prices are usually per stateroom - not per person (but check the fine print).
Sometime before your cruise, maybe weeks, maybe just minutes, the cruise line will pick the winners. They may not all happen at once, and you can usually go back to the website to check the status. If your bid says ‘expired’ or something similar, then you didn’t get that upgrade. If it’s ‘pending’ then there is a chance you could still win. You can bid on as many types of rooms as are presented - they won’t let you win more than one type. Also, you’ll only pay if you do win. Usually, cruise lines email you if you’ve won a bid (some also notify you if you don’t), but many guests find they notice a credit card charge for their win even before they’re otherwise notified.
Mistakes When Bidding for Upgrades
Paying more than necessary.
Humans are kinda funny (I’ve yet to have AI write an article on CruiseHabit, you can tell by my typos). We sometimes get so caught up in a process we forget there are better ways. For example, I’ve seen guests bid more than they could pay for the room outright. If you’ve paid $2000 for your inside cabin, and now you’re thinking of trying your luck at getting upgraded to a balcony room, think about what it’s worth to you, but make sure you can’t get it for less! The cruise line or travel agent may have balcony rooms available for purchase. If the prevailing rate is $2700, then you’ll just pay the $700 - no bidding needed! Do keep in mind that anytime you adjust your rate, you’re actually adjusting your fare, so other parts of the promotion, such as how much onboard credit you get, may change. A good travel agent can help you navigate these waters. Read more about the importance of using a good travel agent.
Letting the Excitement of a Bid Get to You
Auctions, even asynchronous ones like this, can be exciting. Anytime something is gamified we can get so excited that we lose sight of the goal. Don’t forget to stick with what you are comfortable spending. You may think your bid is a longshot, but if you do get it, that money is being charged to your credit card right away, and there is no going back (you can’t get a refund and go back to your previously booked room). This also means not getting tricked by the gauges showing how likely your bid is to get accepted. They serve absolutely no function beyond trying to get you to put out more money.
Bidding for an Upgrade is Like Getting a Guarantee Room
Cruise lines often let you book a guarantee room, where you pay to get not a specific room, but a type of room - and you don’t get to choose the exact room number or location. You can learn more about that in this video about cabin types . One of the downsides of guarantees is also a downside to bidding for upgrades, in that, unless there is only one of the room type you’re bidding on, you could get ANY of those rooms, so if you’re worried about being next to a loud club, or too far forward or aft (which can be hard for those prone to motion discomfort), then bidding for a room may not be for you.
Common Misconceptions about Bidding for Cruise Cabin Upgrades
What’s included with your upgrade.
Generally, if you win a bid for a new room category, it’s just like you booked that room to begin with - you get all the benefits that come along with it. There can be exceptions. For example, on Celebrity, booking a suite generally comes with a premium beverage package. If, however, you booked a standard stateroom and don’t have a drink package, or have only a classic drink package, you’ll not receive the deluxe package if you win an upgrade to a suite. While this is somewhat of an exception, you should always check to be sure that anything you expect to get, beyond the room itself, is actually included in the price when bidding for an upgrade.
Whoever Bids the Most Will Win the Stateroom Upgrade
This seems logical, but there are at least two reasons that it’s wrong (maybe more - we don’t always know all of the factors cruise lines may be considering). First, if I paid $1000 for an inside room, and you paid $3000 for a balcony, it’s generally the case that these differences are taken into account when bidding. If I bid $500 for a suite, but you, having paid three time what I did for the cruise fare, bid $400 for the same suite, you’re probably at an advantage - which makes sense, as you’d potentially get that suite for $3400, instead of my winning it for $1500.
Another reason the highest bidder doesn’t always win is because no one has to win. In fact, this comes up as a question frequently, when guests see that a sailing is sold out, or is out of a certain type of room, but then they’re able to bid for upgrades on that cruise, or for that sold out type of room on the cruise. Is this a mistake? Not at all! Things happen, people cancel cruises at the last minute sometimes, and when that happens, the cruise line will want to put someone in that room, and they want that someone to pay for it, so they’ll take someone who bid the most (or who is willing to pay the highest net cost between their fare and their bid). I’ve twice won bids for upgrades where just days before, the room type I bid on was completely sold out - and this is a common situation. It also relates to why cruise lines love this bidding system…
How Cruise Lines Win When People Bid for Upgrades
Cruise lines are businesses, so of course, they’re happy to have guests offer money for nice rooms, where they then get to pick if they accept that money. That, however, is just one step in the process for the cruise line. Let’s say, for the sake of simplicity, that there is one guest in an inside room who bid for an ocean view, one in an ocean view who bid for a verandah, and one in a verandah who bid for a suite. Should a suite become available, the verandah guest moves up, and now, a verandah is available. That means they can then award the ocean view guest their bid to a verandah, and award the inside room guest their upgrade to the ocean view. That’s pretty great for the cruise line - but it goes even further.
In the scenario above, there is now an empty inside room - and if you’re a cruise line trying to fill a ship with only a couple weeks or even days to go, you want a good lead price. A lead price is the lowest price you can advertise for a cruise and that the cruise line is willing to accept at the time an ad runs. “Cruise the Caribbean for just $399!” That’s a lead price. If they can move guests up (while charging them money for it), and end up with a lower lead price (since the inside rooms would generally be the most affordable), that helps fill those final spaces on the ship.
Tips for Winning a Bid for Your Cruise
Let me start by telling you that none of these tips guarantee you’ll get upgraded - because as I mentioned previously, above all else, there has to be a room to be awarded. If there is space, however, these tips may help you, as they’ve helped me.
Cruise lines can decide to award a bid at any time. While often, they wait until the last minute, this isn’t always the case. You can’t win if you don’t bid, so if the option is worth it to you, don’t delay. Someone else may be the top bidder today and win a bid, simply because you hadn’t taken the two minutes to offer a bid yet. So, as soon as you get an email telling you that you can bid, go for it. In fact, some lines don't even make you wait, and there may be upgrade links available when you log into the website. In the case of Virgin Voyages , you can go right to their upgrade page .
You’re Most Likely to Win Bids for Balcony Rooms
On most modern cruise ships, 70-90% of rooms have verandahs, or balconies. Because they’re by far the most abundant type of room, they’re also the most likely to free up - either because the cruise line didn’t sell them all as quickly as expected, or because someone cancels. Think about it this way, if 850 out of 1000 cabins are balconies, and someone cancels, which type of room most likely just freed up?
Bid on Multiple Room Types You Like
This tip is especially true for suites, and relates to our tip above. Let’s say I’m in a standard room on Scarlet Lady , and I’d like to stay in a suite. Those Cheeky Corner Suites look cool (seriously, watch this tour! ), so I’m going to bid on one, and I see the option to bid on a “Cheeky Corner Suite - Even Bigger Terrace”. Well, there are only two of those - so while possible, it’s not likely I’ll get one of them. Keep looking and you might see you can bid on a “Cheeky Corner Suite- Biggest Terrace”, at the same time. If those are neat, but just having any suite is really what’d be neat, then bid on a Seriously Suite, too - there are dozens of those, and thus, a better chance one may become available. Bidding on all three of those types, if you’d be happy with them, greatly increases your chances of success.
Don’t Bid a Round Number
This one is purely conjecture on my part, I’ll admit, but it’s easy, and seems logical. Most of us have a budget, and I’m not saying to pay more than what it’s worth to you - but, well, maybe $5 or $10 more. If two people bid on a suite, and they both paid $3000 for their current room, and they see the minimum bid for a suite is $750, maybe they’ll both bid that, or maybe they’ll think, “I’ll bid just more than the minimum - $800.” A lot of people will stop at big round numbers like that. Me, if I’m comfortable with $800, then I’ll be fine with $805 or $810, in hopes I might beat out someone with a similar budget, even though I’m not spending materially more.
The Most Important Tip When Bidding
Remember, you paid a price for your cruise that was worth it to you. Don’t let the hype of bidding, or the gamification make you lose sight of that. I hate seeing folks upset they didn’t get an upgrade when, before they knew it was an option, they were perfectly happy with the room they initially booked!
You chose your vacation, and odds are, you’re going to have a pretty great time. If you don’t win an upgrade bid, you’ll have a pretty great time for even less money than you were willing to part with.

The Secret Trick to Getting a Cruise Upgrade for Less
How to bid on a bigger, better cruise cabin for a fraction of the cost..
- Copy Link copied

Who doesn’t like getting more for less? For avid travelers, that’s especially true for travel upgrades.
Not that long ago, upgrades on cruises were a matter of loyalty and luck. However, an increasing number of cruise lines now offer guests the chance to bid on superior unsold cabins at a lower rate (much like how airlines auction off business and first-class seats at a discount). It’s a scheme that allows the cruise company to earn additional money (and free up some of the easier-to-sell lower-priced cabins) while giving travelers a chance to enjoy upgraded accommodations for a below-the-shelf price.
Here’s what you need to know about bidding for discounted cruise cabin upgrades.
How does the cruise upgrade bidding process work?
While the various cruise lines have different names for their bidding programs (like Level Upgrade, RoyalUp, and MoveUp), they all operate the same, as they’re all managed by a company called Plusgrade (the same bidding company that airlines use).
In the weeks and months leading up to a sailing (usually before the final payment deadline), cruise lines may send guests an email notification inviting them to bid for an upgrade. However, if they don’t receive an email, cruisers can go directly to the upgrade bidding page on the cruise line’s website and input their reservation number to get the ball rolling.
Upgraded cruise cabins may come with other added perks—for instance, if you book into the Retreat on Celebrity ships, the suites include access to a private restaurant, lounge, and sundeck.
Ryan Wicks/Celebrity Cruises
Usually, the cruise line will have short descriptions and photos of the room upgrades available, and you can bid on as many categories of rooms as you want—don’t worry, you can only win once. From there, you’ll be asked to provide your credit card information. If your bid is accepted, the funds will automatically be withdrawn.
Once you’ve submitted your bid, keep an eye on your email for any updates from the cruise line. It might come right away, or it may not come until the day of departure. Most cruise lines allow you to modify or withdraw your bid within a specified timeframe before the bidding window closes (which varies by company), but you can’t change your mind after the bid has been accepted.
There’s usually a minimum bid the company will accept, so unfortunately you can’t offer five bucks and get an upgrade. Remember, bidding for an upgrade is essentially a gamble. While many passengers have successfully secured upgrades at a fraction of the retail price, there’s no guarantee that your bid will be accepted. If your bid is unsuccessful, you’ll still be accommodated in the cabin you originally booked.
How much does it cost to bid on a cruise upgrade?
There’s no magic number that will score you an upgrade—it all depends on what other people bid.
When placing your bid, consider factors such as the current availability of higher-tier cabins (the more available, the better your chances), the popularity of your sailing date, and the likelihood of other passengers bidding for upgrades. Typically, even bidding slightly more than the minimum can greatly increase your chances.
While you want to be competitive, avoid bidding more than the upgraded cabin is worth to you. It’s important to note that if you’re not careful, you could end up bidding more than the room originally sold for, so be sure to check the current price of that category before placing a bid.
Cruise lines that offer upgrade auctions
Most of the cruise companies that offer bid-to-upgrade programs are larger brands, including:
- Celebrity Cruises
- Royal Caribbean
- Virgin Voyages

How to get a free or cheap cruise ship cabin upgrade
A real score for cruise passengers is a free or cheap cabin upgrade. Just like with airline seats, you can't count on an upgrade — but it sure feels great when it happens. Several methods will help improve your chances of landing in better cruise ship accommodations.
Before I get into details, some facts: On a typical ship, the basic categories of cruise room are inside (no view), outside (with window or porthole), balcony, mini-suites and suites. It's rare to get more than a one-category upgrade, so don't think you can book an inside cabin and wind up in a fancy suite. More common is that you might find an upgrade to a better inside cabin . Make sure you have realistic expectations.
Your best course is always to book the nicest cabin you can afford. That said, here are some tricks to scoring a discounted cruise ship cabin upgrade and landing better cruise rooms without breaking the bank.

Look for an upgrade sale
Cruise line sales are the easiest way to score cheap or free upgraded accommodations. Various mass-market brands will run periodic promotions, especially during the fall and winter "wave season" sale periods . You also might also see discounted upgrades offered on cruises during shoulder seasons, such as immediately after children return to school in the fall.
Free or discounted promotions encourage upgrades from inside cabins to ocean-views and from ocean-views to balconies. One tactic during these sales is to list outside and balcony cabins at the same price. If you can't find a deal on moving up a category, you may see a free upgrade to a bigger or better-located cabin within the category you originally planned to book. (Even within categories, the size of cabins and prices vary.)
Book a 'guarantee' cabin
When you book a cruise, you typically choose a cabin in the location you desire. With a "guarantee" cabin , you leave it up to the cruise line to assign you accommodations either in the category you booked — or a better one. The bet is that your category will sell out and the cruise line will have to move you up for free — say, from an outside to a balcony cabin.
In the worst-case scenario, you end up in the category you booked; in the best case, you get your dream cabin. There is a catch, though. Since you still can't choose your specific cabin, you could end up in a noisy or otherwise undesirable area of the ship — even if the room is technically an upgrade from what you booked. For example, that great view you think you snagged may end up being blocked by lifeboats.

Join a loyalty program
Cruise lines naturally give preference for upgrades to frequent cruisers who are members of their loyalty programs . It's easy to join and you may not even know you did — your name may be added to a cruise line's email and mailing list after your first cruise with the brand.
As a loyalty program member, keep an eye out for promotional deals you'll receive, including emails and newsletters, which will alert you to discounts about upgrades before non-members get word or pricing that's only for members. You may also receive invitations to bid for upgrades or get offered discounted upgrades on cruises you've already booked.
In addition, you can rack up points for perks that eventually may include free or discounted upgrades. For instance, if you reach the top Diamond status with Carnival Cruise Line's VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) loyalty program , you get a one-time free cabin upgrade.
Work with an experienced cruise travel agent
Travel agents, especially those who do a lot of business with a particular cruise line, have a certain amount of pull. Your agent may be able to snag you an upgrade by contacting the cruise line and asking for a favor. You may not know you have been upgraded until you get to the ship, as it will be based on last-minute space being available.
Related: 5 reasons to turn down a cruise ship cabin upgrade
Your travel advisor may also be able to steer you toward specific cruise lines or sailings where you stand a better chance of an upgrade. In addition, your agency may have access to special group rates, meaning you'll pay a discounted price for that upgraded cabin you desire.
Bid for an upgrade
A few years ago, Norwegian Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean , Celebrity Cruises and MSC Cruises were among the cruise lines that took a page from international airlines (such as Qantas and Aer Lingus) and began offering bidding programs for upgrades.
These online programs are basically silent auctions that only select cruisers (preference is given to loyalty club members) are invited to join. The cruise line sets a minimum bid, and you can go up in price from there.
Your chance of an upgrade may be based on luck, skill or both. The advice from successful bidders is to go up from the minimum, but how much is a personal choice. Some people snag better accommodations for under $20, some for $100 or more. You don't pay anything unless your bid is accepted. New in 2022, river line cruise Uniworld launched its own bid-for-upgrade program.
Ask once on board
The hotel director on any cruise ship has a certain amount of discretion in moving guests to different cabins. Being bold enough to ask for an upgrade once you are on the ship may pay off.
To try your luck, you'll want to ask about an upgrade at guest services. Since the crew there will spend embarkation day fielding a whole bunch of questions and complaints from grumpy, travel-weary cruisers, your best bet may be to head to your assigned cabin and wait until the second day of your cruise to ask for an upgrade.
Put on a big smile, be super friendly and ask if there is any chance a better cabin is available. If you aren't offered an upgrade for free, you might suggest you are willing to pay a small fee.

Mention your special occasion
If you are celebrating a special occasion on a ship — such as a birthday, anniversary or honeymoon — the cruise line or your travel agent may find ways to fete you, including by upgrading your cabin.
When you book your cruise, note in your reservation (or remind your travel agent to note) that you are celebrating a special event in your life. Whether you are a loyal customer or a first-timer that the cruise line hopes will become a repeat cruiser, you may be rewarded with an upgrade.
This sort of upgrade would typically be a "surprise" that occurs when you check in at the pier, so you can't plan for it in advance. It never hurts to remind the staff how excited you are to be celebrating on the ship and ask if there is any chance for an upgrade.

Have a luxury cruise for less
Planning on sailing the high seas? Whether you’re blowing the budget on a luxury cruise or opting for something a little more wallet-friendly, we’ve got the best ways to upgrade your adventure without breaking the bank.
Be stateroom savvy
These days, most cruise lines publish detailed deck plans on their websites, so take time to study them before booking your room. We’re huge fans of Holland America’s color-coded downloadable deck plans, which use symbols to indicate cabin pros and cons, including obstructed views, half-height windows and accessibility. Can’t see a deck plan on the website? Email the cruise line and ask. Cabins with obstructed views can come with hefty discounts and the obstruction could be as little as a dangling line of rigging.
Opt for an older model
Dozens of new cruise ships are launched every year and you’ll almost always pay a premium to bag a cabin on the newest vessel. But don’t be too influenced by hype. Yes, your favorite line’s shiniest ship might have robot butlers, an indoor ski slope and five helipads (we’re slightly exaggerating), but take time to think about which amenities you’ll actually use before splashing the cash. Plus, the newest ships aren’t always the most exciting: Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas launched back in 2008 and serves up glow-in-the-dark laser tag, one of the largest water parks at sea and the Bionic Bar, where drinks are poured by androids.
Board with bubbles
A lot of cruise-goers don’t realise that most cruise lines allow passengers to bring some of their own alcohol onboard, so always research your cruise’s regulations. Just be aware that most lines also stipulate that this alcohol must be consumed in your cabin – if it’s consumed in public areas, corkage fees will be imposed. Celebrity Cruises allows every passenger to bring two bottles of wine onboard on embarkation day and P&O Cruises allows one liter of beer, wine or spirits per person.
Enjoy all-inclusive eating
Most cruise ships have at least two restaurants in which you can dine for free – typically a buffet restaurant and a more formal dining room with an à la carte menu. Additionally there are often pop up-style options, such as the poolside pizza place found on Holland America's Koningsdam. Royal Caribbean ships are known for their wide range of restaurants and a special mention goes to Anthem of the Seas. The liner has seven venues, including Italian, Mediterranean and all-American outlets, at which guests can dine for free.
Seek out a sanctuary
Worried about bagging that poolside sun lounger or nabbing the best spot for the sunset? Give yourself a head start by splashing out on access to exclusive areas of the deck. Perks range from butler service and spa treatments to chilled face towels and poolside cabanas. One of our favorites is Royal Caribbean’s new-for-2022 Suite Neighborhood, which comes with 5-star dining and an infinity plunge pool. Norwegian Cruise Line’s version is The Haven, often referred to as a ship-within-a-ship. Book a Haven cabin and you’ll get butler service, priority disembarkation and access to a private sundeck.
Generally, the cheapest cabins are the ones lowest on the ship, but being nearer sea level isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you’re on a transatlantic cruise or spending long periods at sea, you’re less likely to be bothered about the view from your balcony. And bear in mind that passengers on upper floors are more likely to experience seasickness, due to the greater range of sideways motion.
Spruce up your cabin
Book a chauffeur
Don’t assume that chauffeur packages come with eye-watering price tags. Work out the cost of parking and gas if you're driving to the port or the fare if you’re booking a cab, then compare it with your chosen cruise line’s chauffeur prices. It's very possible there won’t be much difference, and these services often come with swoon-worthy extras like early embarkation and staff to deal with your luggage.
Join cruise events for free drinks
Regardless of whether you're bothered about meeting the captain or listening to a lecture about your cruise line’s latest destinations, doing so can pay major dividends. Events like the captain’s cocktail hour, art auctions and flash sales at onboard boutiques often come with complimentary drinks and nibbles. Who said there’s no such thing as a free lunch?
Book a speciality restaurant
Speciality dining doesn’t have to break the bank as the extra fees are often minimal. Royal Caribbean, Silversea and Norwegian all have brilliant speciality restaurants for guests willing to fork out a little more, but it's not just the luxury lines that offer a wide range of eateries. On Virgin Voyages you'll have dozens of restaurants to choose from, all included in the basic fare, from the Pink Agave Mexican restaurant to Gunbae, where diners can cook their own steaks at a grill built into every table, and Extra Virgin, a beautiful trattoria with a private dining room.
Embrace room service
Many cruise lines, such as Princess Cruises and Holland America, offer room service at no extra cost. It’s a win-win situation – you start the day with an in-room feast and the cruise line reduces overcrowding in its most popular restaurants. Windstar Cruises is just one example of a line that goes above and beyond for in-cabin dining. There are no extra charges, the service is available 24 hours a day and the menu from flagship restaurant Amphora can be ordered during dinner hours.
Be clever with kids
Thinking of a multi-generational vacation? Save your hard-earned cash by booking cheaper cabins for certain members of your entourage. Kids and teens are much less likely to spend a lot of time in their cabins – let alone on the balcony you forked out for – when there are roller-skating rinks, water slides and go-karting circuits to check out. Often it is possible to book an inside cabin directly across the corridor from your balcony cabin so you can still keep an eye on them while saving money.
Upgrade your alcohol
We love cruise lines that offer complimentary alcoholic drinks, but some tipples will likely be excluded – like Champagne and premium spirits. If you’re partial to particular beverages your line might offer premium packages – Princess Cruises, for example, offers a Princess Premier package which includes a much wider range. Another tip? If you’ve got a weakness for certain wines, save money by buying a bottle rather than a glass and asking your waiter to cork it and keep it behind the bar for you.
Ask your steward
Don’t underestimate the power wielded by your cabin steward. Ask nicely and he or she can transform your cruise, whether it’s by doing the nightly turndown service at your preferred time, providing extra toiletries and a bathrobe or helping you bag your favorite restaurant’s most sought-after table. It's those little extras that can make your vacation feel more lavish.
Shout about your special occasion
Most cruise lines will be more than happy to help passengers mark special occasions, whether it’s with complimentary birthday cakes, bottles of fizz or spa treatments. Email the customer service team well in advance to inform them of any occasions, and we’re not just talking about birthdays and honeymoons. Is it your first time sailing with that particular cruise line or the 10-year anniversary of your first cruise? In a crowded market, cruise lines are keener than ever to stop passengers straying to other operators, and are often only too happy to roll out perks to do so.
Formulate a spa strategy
If you’re planning to log a lot of spa time, book a cruise that offers complimentary access to spa facilities and keep an eye out for onboard spa events, often including skincare masterclasses that focus on certain brands. Yes, these events are often designed to draw you into purchases, but there’s no obligation to buy and therapists typically offer complimentary mini-treatments during these sessions. Another great hack is to book spa treatments during port days – Princess Cruises is one of many lines to offer discounts at these times to encourage passengers to visit outside peak periods.
Search for secret decks
Many modern cruise ships make the Titanic look tiny, and there's often more decks than you know to explore. Sure, deck number nine might be a great spot from which to soak up evening views and deck seven might boast the most sun loungers, but to avoid the crowds the lower decks should certainly be on your radar. They’re usually darker with less lighting, which means they’re great for stargazing sessions, and in rougher seas you’ll feel significantly less motion on decks closer to the waterline.
Choose the perfect pillow
Pillow menus are increasingly common on cruise ships (Disney Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines all have them) but don’t be afraid to request a certain type of pillow if you don’t find a menu in your cabin. There will almost always be harder or softer options available, and it’s another reason to stay on good terms with your cabin steward.
Enjoy a midnight snack
You’re on vacation, so normal rules don’t apply. Treat yourself to a midnight feast by ordering your favorite dessert after hours or snacking on those cookies you picked up from the buffet. Love those pillow chocolates your cabin steward dishes out every night? Don’t be afraid to ask for a few extras.
Skip shore excursions...
You're not obliged to sign up for every available shore excursion. Port days are often the best days to chill out onboard: enjoy some downtime in the crowd-free lounges, treat yourself to some stressless retail therapy or do a few laps of the swimming pool. Spending huge amounts of time – and money – dragging yourself around every excursion in the calendar is hardly a one-way ticket to relaxation.
...or arrange your own
On the flipside, don’t be afraid to go it alone. Cruise lines are looking to make money, after all, and you’ll be able to find huge savings by booking your own activities and tours. This applies to almost any type of excursion – even if it’s a simple, self-guided trip on a scenic cable car or train, you’ll almost always pay extra.
Time for tea
Don’t assume you’ll need to fork out a fortune to enjoy a decadent afternoon tea – you’ll often find it's included in the price. Sail on Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and your fare covers daily afternoon teas in the Queens Room or Grills Lounge (we recommend the former, famous for its enormous crystal chandeliers). On Seabourn cruises it's the same and the buffet-style tea sessions come with a mind-boggling range of teas including mandarin, rose and ginger varieties.
Avoid pitch and roll
Nothing will ruin your cruise quicker than a bout of seasickness. If you’re prone to motion-related nausea purchase anti-sickness tablets in advance, or, if you’re caught unawares, ask for some at guest services. You’re less likely to feel the ship’s movement in lower cabins, at the rear of the ship and in the center. Don’t be afraid to ask to change cabins mid-cruise either.
Seek out family-friendly deals
If you’re planning a cruise with younger relatives, there are countless lines that offer promotions which can see kids sail for free (MSC Cruises, Holland America, Norwegian and others), as long as they’re in your cabin, sleeping in either bunk beds or a pull-out bed. These deals can result in huge savings, although bear in mind that younger guests will still incur taxes and port fees.
Remember that bigger isn’t always better
Get more bang for your buck by opting for a cruise on a smaller ship. Fewer passengers means more space at key facilities like the spa, buffet restaurant and poolside, while events often feel more luxurious and intimate. Consider, for instance, the Windstar Cruises alfresco deck barbecue which takes place on every trip. Expect enormous vats of seafood paella and a whole roasted pig, which you can tuck into at tables draped with crisp linens dotted around the deck.
Stay connected
Cruises are perfect for a digital detox, but at some point you'll probably want to send photos to loved ones or check in on the news. If you’re planning to purchase an internet package, we’d advise against buying deals that detail a certain number of megabytes or hours. Ship-based connectivity is improving but it can still be sketchy at sea, and nothing’s worse than watching your allowance drain away while you wait for an email to send. Packages allowing unlimited use for the day or the whole cruise tend to offer the best value for money – typically costing around $12 a day. And if you do opt for a timed package, remember you may have to log off in order to stop the clock. The other option is to buy a data package that allows you to use your phone while in port for a much lower cost than using ship Wi-Fi.
Shower in the spa
Do drinks-related research
Most cruise lines offer a wide range of drinks packages to cater to every type of passenger, so have a peruse before you pick. Celestyal Cruises, for instance, offer a $29-a-day Platinum All-Inclusive Package containing 101 different cocktails, liqueurs, aperitifs, premium wines, energy drinks and more, a $16-a-day Non-Alcoholic Package which includes pressed juices, milkshakes, smoothies and ice cream and a $10-a-day Kids Refreshing Package offering mocktails, milkshakes, hot cocoa and ice cream. Just don’t blame us when the sugar rush kicks in…
Double check what’s included
Before you choose your cruise or splash out on added extras, always check what’s included as standard – you’ll often get a pleasant surprise. For example, Silversea offers one hour of free internet a day in some cabin categories, while numerous cruise lines (Viking, for one) include excursions in the base fare.
Shop the sales
If you're in the planning stage of your cruise, it’s worth signing up for newsletters that can tip you off about one-off promotions and sales. You can often enjoy added extras without forking out huge sums: notable examples include Norwegian’s regular Free at Sea promotion, Holland America’s seasonal upgrade sales and Princess Cruises' Best Sale Ever event.

Captains club upgrade
By bogofman , January 2, 2020 in Celebrity Cruises

I'm wondering how the captains club 1 level upgrade works.
is that within a category or across categories.
if we book a outside cabin would it work to upgrade to the lowest balcony?
or only work within the balcony grades,
eg. book an obstructed cabin then get a free upgrade to the first unobstructed?
i assume we must phone up the captains club number to get this, since it does not seem to work online ( or it didn't last time i tried)
with Royal Caribbean, booking online does get the C&A discount
Thanks in advance for any advice

Only works within a category like C2 at a C3 price or 06 at 07 price etc. Doesn't work for suites and there are some categories which you can't do like FV and C1.
Yes you have to call or have your TA do it if booking directly with a TA. The Celebrity website doesn't even tell you the subcategory when browsing.
From the website: One-category upgrade requests must be made at the time of booking and apply only for upgrades within the supercategory, depending on availability. Example of a super category upgrade in AquaClass: A2 to A1. Upgrades available from categories 11- A1 on all Celebrity ships except Galapagos voyages. Captain's Club one category upgrade excludes categories 12, FV, SV, C1 and guarantee categories, Z, Y, X, XC, XA, W. On Celebrity Edge categories 12, 9, 7, 6, IO, 1B, 1A, SV, ES, E1, C2, C1, A1 are also excluded. This offer cannot be used with certain restricted fares including but not limited to travel agent and employee rates. Upgrades apply for one stateroom per cruise. Stateroom assignments only. Not valid on holiday sailings.

Think of it more as a "down price" rather than "upgrade" -- you book the cabin you want and pay for the category one below it, There's one other thing to be aware of -- there must be an available room in the category below in order for them to give you the "upgrade".
In 2018, we booked a 2C cabin, but only paid 2D price.
its not possible to see the categories any longer on the web site , only price
shall have to give the cabin we want and then pay the lower price as suggested above.
does consiege count as a veranda upgrade?
current pricing for the cruise we are looking at the lowest conseige is almost as low as the lowest veranda

You can see the cabin categories by looking at the deck plans. When I'm doing a mock booking to check for pricing, I keep another tab open with the deck plans to check the cabin category. Concierge is not eligible as a veranda upgrade because it's a different cabin category.

For the last several days I have not been able to see the deck plans when searching on Celebrity's web site. It is so annoying. All you can get is the list of available cabins and then you have to go through the whole fake booking process to get the price. Their web site is a disgrace and I often wonder how much business they lose because of this.

I was just looking at Edge deck plans today using the "ships" drop down menu. Has that not been working for you?
Cruise Raider
And, although stated above, this is not applicable for guaranteed cabins. It states for stateroom assignments only ... means the same thing.
And the upgrades are only for specific categories to specific categories ... so if you at the top of your super category of inside (to inside), oceanview (to oceanview), veranda (reg veranda), concierge, etc... you would simply pay for the lower category, although, not all are applicable (ie: C3 to C2 but not a C2 to a C1, no upgrades within the suite categories and no upgrades to a FV). I usually pick out my room and then ask if they can lower the price to the category below. It's usually about a savings of $10 - $20 pp only however, one time, I got an overall savings of $500, though. Most of the times, those category upgrades with huge savings aren't allowed.

Don't use the Celebrity website. It is designed to confuse you by picking a cabin and then finding out the price and the category.
Virtually all 3rd party websites will show you the cabin availability by category.

Has always been that way. Probably have lost $ millions and millions over the years. Difficulty booking, difficulty booking excursions, etc. etc.
But they DID save several thousand dollars by outsourcing their IT development and web design, front and back end.
for any UK people reading this I booked IV lowest one through a TA online (out of hrs and price of total cabin price £1345 for 2 people with drinks package and $300 was to good to risk waiting until morning) then phoned TA first thing next day and they contacted celebrity and we got bumped up to top IV cat. so actually got up a few cats within the IV balconies

Thank you for your help. Following your post, I tried a booking on another cruise, one I'm not interested in, just to see what would happen. The deck plan did come up. I guess they haven't updated the web site for the cruise I want which is in May 2022. Maybe that explains it. How do they expect to sell a cabin on that cruise? Fortunately I have a link to the German site which is outstanding. Just to tell you, the other day I requested a change of cabin on another Celebrity cruise and got it. I immediately went to the German site and, lo and behold, my old cabin was showing as available and the one I changed to, taken!! That's what I call service. I wish I could post the link here.
Trying to book a cruise today and get a 2A for the price of a 2B. Agent says that is excluded from the list? I can get a 2B for the price of a 2C. I think he is wrong. Anyone out there know if there has been a change?

Seems like the agent may have mixed up 1B (excluded on Edge) and 2B?

Yes, after CruiseCritic update I could no longer connect via Tapatalk and since I only use tablet I cancelled account t and just waited until they finally figured it out.
I was right and did get the 2A for the 2B price. There has to be some benefits from spending so much time on CC!!
15 hours ago, TeaBag said: There has to be some benefits from spending so much time on CC!!
Once you get past some of the flame throwing that goes on, there are so many benefits to this site ...
- Info on best cabin choices
- Money saving tips
- Excursion ideas
- Best onboard shows and events
- Best food options
- Ways to avoid crowds
Etc, etc, etc ....
We most often book A2 and keep it as we don't like the location of the A1s on S-Class ships, even if it would be a "free" upgrade. On Edge we "used" the upgrade to A1 and on another occasion the C3 to C2 bump.
As long as you like the location of the upgrade cabin, it can be a nice thing.
I always book a C3 and upgrade at a later date. And as you will find out, there is never a definitive answer when it comes to Celebrity policies. I've upgraded three times for a hump during Christmas cruises. If I book directly with Celebrity then I will call them multiple times until I get the answer I want. This last cruise, I went through a TA and had them upgrade me with no problems.
There is a difference between paying for upgrades and receiving the Captain's Club benefit. I would be surprised if they let you use the benefit multiple times on the same booking. And the Captain's Club benefit is not supposed to be applicable during Christmas cruises.

Min bid to upgrade to Sky Suite was $1500 per person. When I look at available cabins, there were 66 available Aqua cabins (out of 130 total AQ cabins). There were 27 Sky Suites available (out of 44 total) and a few higher suite categories as well. Crossing my fingers that some magic will happen once we're onboard.

Celebrity has placed placed extremely high of minimum bids for all the cabin upgrades. If you placed the minimum bid, it would cost me more money for the upgraded cabin, then if you would have purchased, that cabin originally. We have placed numerous bids to upgrade our original cabin (on Celebrity) and never had this problem.

Normally Celebrity upgrades people before they get to the terminal. Just off the Equinox and there was a couple in Michaels Club that found out their cabin was changed from a Sky Suite to a Celebrity Suite when they arrived at Check-In. They were VERY concerned about their luggage since it was tagged for the Sky Suite.
