About manjanggul lava tube.

Unlike most normal caves formed from natural erosion, Manjanggul Cave (만장굴) was formed between 200,000 and 300,000 years ago when the 456m volcano Geomunoreum erupted.

Accordingly, magma flows with extremely high temperatures deep underground were formed from the materials that make up the Earth’s crust. Eventually, this magma rose to the surface and erupted in the form of lava.

The lava then flowed down the coast, and the path extended for more than 13km, from which many lava tubes were created. The Manjanggul lava system is currently the largest cave in this system.

The total length is more than 7400m long, with sections up to 25m high and 18m wide. However, the cave also has small parts, barely large enough for one person to pass through.

There are three entrances to the Manjanggul lava tube, but visitors can only use the second entry. Most of the cave is closed off, and you can only explore around 1 km from the cave entrance.

Travel tips

  • Guide : Check out our  Jeju travel guide  and plan your trip to this beautiful island.
  • Accommodation : Ventimo Hotel  and  Yeha Guesthouse are fabulous  places to stay in Jeju city . Both places offer comfortable rooms, excellent service, and location.
  • Tour : To visit Manjanggul Cave, you can book an  Eastern Jeju tour .
  • Transport : Compare the best flight prices with  Skyscanner . Also, check my  Jeju bus guide  to get around the island.

How to get from Jeju to Manjanggul Cave

Manjanggul Cave is 30km east of Jeju City, and a bus ride takes about 30 minutes. You can also book a private car transfer to Manjanggul cave .

I recommend taking the Eastern Jeju tour to visit Manjanggul and attractions in the Eastern part of Jeju island. The tour is hassle-free as you don’t have to wait for the bus or get lost during transit.

From the cave entrance, follow the wooden path to explore the majestic beauty of the lava tunnel.

There are light systems along the way, but you still should bring a torch as the light is relatively poor in some areas.

The floor is wet and uneven so hold on to the railings as you may easily slip.

Things to see and do at Manjanggul lava tunnel

Lava stalactites and stalagmites.

Thanks to the formation of volcanic eruptions, Manjanggul Cave has different characteristics from other limestone caves around the world.

The tunnel is impressive, with multiple lava stalactites, stalagmites , and flowstones .

Turtle Rock

Countless rock samples with different animal shapes are formed from molten lava, both eye-catching and exciting.

The most prominent ones are Turtle Rock and the giant lava column. This rock gains its name thanks to the shape of a turtle, quite similar to Jeju Island’s shape.

Giant lava column

A giant lava column formed when volcanic lava spills from above is open to tourists at the end of the tunnel.

With a height of 7.6m, this is the tallest lava column in the world that has been discovered.

Splendid and magnificent was what I felt when visiting the Manjanggul lava tube cave on Jeju Island. Manjanggul is like an underground world with rocks of all shapes and sizes.

I spotted a few bats in the cave on my visit here.

I was surprised to learn that Manjanggul Cave has the largest bat colony on Jeju Island, which nests in this dense cave system. This cave is also recorded as the largest bat cave in Korea, with more than 30,000 bats.

The cave is also home to other animals, notably the Jeju cave spider.

There’s a small museum onsite where you can read more about the origin and features of the cave.

Not only are the colorful rocks, but this place also offers a feeling of relaxation and refreshment with the green flora.

Manjanggul lava tube entrance ticket

The ticket price for Manjanggul Cave is 4000 won for adults and 2000 won for children and teenagers.

If you travel in a group of 10 or more people, the entrance prices will be lower. It is 3000 for adults and 1500 for teenagers and children.

It’s free for children under 7, seniors over 65, and the disabled and their caretakers.

Manjanggul cave opening hours

Manjanggul lava tube is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm, with a slightly earlier closing time in winter at 5 pm. The last entrance is at 5 pm (or 4 pm in the winter).

Also, it is closed on the first Wednesday of the month.

How long does it take to visit Manjanggul Cave?

The cave entrance is a 7-minute walk from the parking, and the whole cave exploration will take about 45 to 50 minutes on foot.

The best time to visit the Manjanggul lava cave is 9 am to 4 pm.

You should bring a jacket when visiting Manjanggul Cave because the temperature in the cave is quite cold. Also, water may drop down from the cave ceiling as well.

On the day I visited Manjang cave, the temperature outside was 33 degrees Celsius while inside was under 15. I was freezing! Some people even wore raincoats as well.

A torch would be handy for your trip, and a pair of comfortable walking shoes is a must.

Manjanggul Cave: Exploring Jeju’s underground

jeju cave tour

Update: Manjanggul Cave is closed until August 2025 for “safety inspection and improvement work.” It’s disappointing but there’s still plenty to do on Jeju. Check out our list of the best things to do on Jeju here.

Manjangul Cave is an impressive lava tube on Jeju’s east coast. It’s part of the Geomun Oreum lava tube system, a 200 to 300-thousand-year-old system of lava tubes found around Geomun Oreum on the east side of Jeju.

Manjanggul Cave is one of two lava tubes open to the public and it’s the most famous and easy to access. It’s also well-preserved and has plenty of interesting lava tube features you can see and learn about.

What’s more, with a length of around 1 km it’s a fun walk and a nice way to spend around an hour while visiting this part of the island. It’s also a great place to go on rainy days, as it was when I went recently, as being underground means you won’t get wet.

I’ve visited the cave plenty of times since living on Jeju. My most recent trip was in September 2023. Here’s all you need to know about making a trip yourself.

Getting to Manjanggul Cave

Manjanggul Cave is situated on Jeju’s east coast around 30km from Jeju City . It’s one of the island’s most popular attractions so you have plenty of options for getting there.

Driving from the city takes around 50 minutes and there is a large car park when you arrive. I visited on a rainy day during the Chuseok vacation, which means the cave was about as busy as it will ever get, and I had no issues finding a parking spot.

If you don’t have a car, you can take the bus. You’ll need to take the coastal express (101) or regular coastal bus (201) to Gimnyeong Elementary School and then switch to the 711-1 or 711-2 and get off at the dedicated Manjanggul Cave bus stop. According to Kakao Maps, this will take between and 60 and 90 minutes.

The final option is to take a taxi. This should cost around KRW 25,000 if you leave from the Jeju City bus terminal.

Exploring the area

When you arrive, you’ll need to head from the car park (or bus stop) to the ticket office, which is just outside the entrance to the cave.

As you make the short walk, you’ll go past the Manjanggul Cave information center. This is well worth a stop as it contains a small exhibition that explains what you are about to see. All the information has been translated into English so it’s a good way to prepare before heading into the cave.

The information center building is also home to a restaurant which at the time I went sold Donkkasseu which are Korean fried pork cutlets. There are also a couple of food stands you can visit if you’re feeling hungry.

Once you leave the information center, you’ll soon find the ticket office. Prices are all clearly displayed and when I went the cost was just KRW 4,000 for an adult and KRW 2,000 for children, with group discounts available.

Manjanggul Cave admission 🎟️

Manjanggul Cave’s opening hours are from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. The ticket office closes at 5 p.m. so you must enter before then.

The below prices were correct when I visited on September 30, 2023.

  • Adults over 24 KRW 4,000 or KRW 3,000 for groups
  • Ages 7 to 24 KRW 2,000 or KRW 1,500 for groups
  • Children aged 6 and under are free

The cave entrance is next to the ticket office. Follow the steps down into the opening section of the cave.

When you enter the cave you come into a large cavern with plenty of room. You’ll notice that it’s well-lit with colorful lights so you won’t have any trouble seeing the cave features or watching where you step.

The ground is rocky all the way to the end of the cave, with a few sections where there is a raised platform to make the walk easier. The surface is solid but it is uneven in places so you’ll have to be careful.

The cave itself is relatively wide throughout, there are a few places when it gets a little narrow, but never to the point where you have to squeeze through. The image below shows one of the narrower points in the cave.

I wore running sneakers and had no problem getting around. There were plenty of people wearing everything from regular sneakers to walking boots. While most were fine, I did notice one lady slipped and fell, so it’s probably best to use shoes that are on the sturdier side if you have them.

The other issue with the ground is that there is plenty of standing water so there is the chance that your shoes and feet will get wet.

As you walk down the path, you’ll notice several features of the cave including lava flowlines, rock falls, and lava rafts. Each of these features is highlighted and has Korean, English, Japanese, and Mandarin language descriptions so you can read about what you’re seeing.

The highlight of the trip is the lava column at the end of the tunnel, or at least the end of the part you can walk down. This formed when lava flowed from the upper tube down through the ceiling to the floor of the lower tube and then started to congeal. The column in Manjanggul Cave is the largest in the world at 7.6 meters high.

There’s a viewing platform so you can get a good look at the tub and it’s lit up with various color lights which gives it an atmospheric feeling.

As this is the end of the tunnel, it’s now just a case of walking back down to the entrance. In total, the path is around 1km in length and it took me approximately 30 minutes to get there and back.

Where to next?

Manjanggul Cave is in an area of Jeju that is especially full of fun attractions. Here are some of the highlights you can consider visiting.

Gimnyeong Maze Park

Gimnyeong Maze Park makes this list because it is only around 1km from the cave. It’s also a fun maze made up of large hedges that are a challenge to get around, or at least it was for me. I’d never done a maze when I went to the park and I had a ton of fun finding my way around.

Address: Jeju-do, Jeju-si, Gujwa-eup, Manjanggul-gil 122

Woljeong Beach

Woljeong Beach is a long stretch of white sand and clear blue ocean on the coast just down from Manjanggul Cave. The area is home to tons of beachfront facing cafes and restaurants and it’s also a popular spot for beginners to try surfing.

Address: Jeju-do, Jeju-si, Gujwa-eup, Woljeong-ri 33-3

Bijarim Forest

Bijarim Forest has a short and accessible walking path that is easy for anyone to visit and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. There’s plentiful parking, a cheap admission, and its a good chance to see some of the gotjawal forest that grows on Jeju without committing to a longer walk.

Address: Jeju-do, Jeju-si, Gujwa-eup, Bijasup-gil 55

Seongsan Ilchulbong

If you want to stick to the most popular Jeju attractions, it’s easy to head from Manjanggul Cave and go straight to Seongsan Ilchulbong , the dramatic tuff cone on the far east of the island. The distance between the two attractions is around 23 km so they aren’t close, but stopping at Manjanggul is an easy way to break up the journey from Jeju City as you travel to Seongsan.

Exploring Manjanggul Cave (Jeju Island Lava Tube Complete Guide)

When it comes to historical volcanic activity on Jeju Island, the Manjanggul Cave is towards the top of the list.

Manjanggul is a lava tube cave that was created hundreds of thousands of years ago due to volcanic eruption.

Today, visitors have the chance to explore a portion of the lava tube cave, and see firsthand some unique lava formations (including the highest lava column in the world!).

Read on to learn more about the Manjanggul Cave and how to go about a visit during your time on Jeju Island.

1) Manjanggul Cave Facts & History

Before we get started, I thought it would be helpful to lay out some historical facts about Manjanggul and how it came to be.

  • Around 200,000 – 300,000 years ago, the Manjanggul lava tube cave was formed due to volcanic activity on the island . It is part of the larger Geomunoreum Lava Tube System.
  • First you have river of lava flowing above ground from the eruption . Then the crust/outer edges of the lava flow begin to cool down, leaving just the interior lava flow.
  • From there, the interior lava flow begins a process of thermal erosion, and goes underground . This in turn creates underground lava flow, which then stops once the eruption has run its course.
  • The underground lava drains from the lava tube, leaving behind an empty lava tube cave .
  • Manjanggul Cave is the 14 th largest lava tube in the world and the 2 nd largest in Jeju . It measures up to 18 meters / 60 feet in width and 23 meters / 100 meters in height. It comes in at around 7.4 km / 4.6 miles in length (but just a portion of the tube is open to the public).
  • While there are three entrances to the Manjanggul Cave, only entrance #2 is open to the public. Here you will find a large safe passageway that heads about 0.6 miles / 1 km into the cave.
  • During a visit to the cave you will find all sorts of lava formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, flowlines, lava benches, and lava rafts to take in along the way .

2) How to Get to Manjanggul Cave

In general, there are three main ways to go about a visit to Manjanggul Cave (and other places around Jeju Island) – rental car, bus, or tour.

When exploring Jeju, I would recommend renting a car in order to explore at your own pace. You will be able to be on your own schedule and not need to worry about public transport.

This will not only help when visiting Manjanggul Cave, but also when visiting any other top spots you have on your Jeju Island to do list (like Seongsan Ilchubong and Hamdeok Beach ).

Feel free to check out Rentalcars.com for potential options. You will be able to see a variety of cars by price, size, and type, so you can choose the one best for you.

There is an extensive public transport network on Jeju Island, so you should be able to leverage that during your time there.

Below are the steps to reach the cave by bus from Jeju City:

  • From Jeju City, take Bus No. 101 to Haenyeo Museum Bus Stop .
  • From Haenyeo Museum Bus Stop, transfer to Bus No. 711-1 and get off at Manjanggul Cave Bus Stop .

Instead of worrying about renting a car or figuring out public transport, you can also make your way to the cave and other highlights by joining a group or private tour.

Also note that you could just hire a taxi to take you back & forth if you don’t want to go for a tour option.

Tour Booking Option : Check out this customizable Private Jeju Tour that can take you all around the island during your trip

3) Manjanggul Cave Location

Below you can see the Manjanggul Cave location and where it is situated on Jeju Island.

Expect the drive from Jeju City to be about 30 minutes, while the drive from Seogwipo to be about 50 minutes.

Note: Google Maps does not work in South Korea when searching for directions. Be sure to download a navigation app like Naver to help get you around the island.

4) Manjanggul Cave Entrance Fee

While there is an entrance fee for Manjanggul Cave, it is a pretty affordable place to visit.

Below are the fees for individuals and groups:

  • Adults (25+) : 4,000 won
  • Teenagers / Children (under 25) : 2,000 won
  • Adults Group : 3,000 won
  • Children Group : 1,500 won
  • Groups are defined as 10 or more people

5) Manjanggul Cave Opening Hours

Manjanggul Cave is a year round destination, and is open for a good portion of the day. Below are the opening hours for the cave:

9:00AM – 6:00PM (last admission at 5:10PM)

During the wintertime, the cave closes at 5:00PM

It is also important to note that the cave is closed on the first Wednesday of each month.

Be aware that the cave can close when it rains too much. There may be a sign near the road entrance stating “It is temporarily closed to the internal safety diagnosis of Manjanggul Cave”.

Before heading out for the day, it may be worth just asking your hotel to confirm it is open.

6) How Much Time to Spend at Manjanggul Cave

In total, you should expect to spend between 45 – 60 minutes at Manjanggul Cave.

The round trip walk within the cave will be 1.2 miles / 2 km. So, overall, it is not that much walking.

However, you are sure to stop and enjoy the various highlights along the way & read some of the helpful information boards.

7) What to Bring

No matter when you visit the cave, you should expect some cooler conditions underground.

The temperature in the cave is around 10 – 15 C (50 – 60 F).

Due to this, I would recommend bringing along a comfortable pair of pants in addition to a sweatshirt or light jacket.

Don’t be surprised if you feel some moisture dropping down from the cave too. Bringing along a light rain jacket and hat can keep you warm and dry.

In addition, you will be walking along the a potentially slick cave pathway so footwear is important.

I would not recommend heading down there in flip flops. Rather, you should have comfortable walking shoes during a visit.

8) A Visit to Manjanggul Cave Lave Tube

After getting yourself to the entrance and paying for your ticket, it is time to head underground and explore the Manjanggul lava tube for yourself.

Simply follow the signs to the left, where you will be directed to a staircase. The staircase takes you down some steps and into the cave opening.

Manjanggul Cave Entrance

The pathways will be a mix between the cave itself and some metal walkways. However, most of it is on the lava tube’s floor.

Be sure to stop along the way to read through some of the informational boards that will give you some more insight about the cave and what you are seeing. There are English translations that are sure to be helpful.

Jeju Lava Tube

Thankfully, the cave is lit up all along the pathway. You will find small lights on the ground to help you see your next step as well as more colorful lights that brighten up the ceilings & walls at certain points.

Manjanggul Cave Jeju

Throughout the walk, you will find some portions of the cave to open up as you see the grand size of what Manjanggul offers.

Be on the lookout for plenty of stalactites and stalagmites that can be found around the cave. In addition, the walls and ceilings are full of lava flow patterns.

Manjanggul Lava

One of the most famous of these lava flow patterns is Turtle Rock / Stone Turtle. It is called this as it resembles the shape of a turtle in addition to Jeju Island itself.

Turtle Rock Jeju

After walking towards the end of the cave, you will reach the grand highlight – the 7.6 meter (25 foot) high lava column.

This column was formed as lava flowed down from the ceiling and started to pile up on the floor. The pile on the floor then combined with the ceiling to create a column.

This one is known to the be the largest lava column in the world!

Manjanggul Lava Column

Once you are all done at the lava column, it is then retracing your steps back out to the entrance.

You will get to experience everything once more from the opposite direction before heading up the staircase and out of the cave.

9) Where to Stay in Jeju

When planning a trip to Jeju, you can opt to base yourself in one spot (like Jeju City or Seogwipo), or spend a couple nights in various places around the island.

At the end of the day, this will all depend on your own itinerary.

Below are a few hotel recommendations for these two main places:

  • Ramada by Wyndham
  • Grand Hyatt
  • Lotte City Hotel
  • Park Sunshine
  • Hotel Bridge
  • Golden Daisy Hotel

During a stay be sure to check out some spots like Jeongbang Waterfall and the Seopjikoji coastline .

Our experience at Manjanggul Cave

Manjanggul Cave in Jeju 03

Manjanggul cave is located in a nice park which you can also visit on the way to the entrance of the cave. You will then be mesmerized at the sight of a figure carved out of volcanic rock, the dolharubang, standing in front of the entrance to the Manjanggul.

As you enter the cave, you can realize how big it is and how impressive it is. You will suddenly feel a drop of temperature as low as 10 ° C the deeper you go.

There is only 1 way inside the cave and you need to get back using the same path. During your visit, you will see many interesting rock formations. One of the highlights is the Stone Turtle an astonishing lava formation outlining Jeju Island. It is called a Lava raft. It is a remnant of rock rubble that was carried down the flow by a lava flow. Eventually, it solidified.

Manjanggul Cave in Jeju 04

World’s largest Lava Column

The tunnel itself shaped by the lava flow is simply gigantic. You can only imagine what it would have been like during the eruption and the power of the volcano. At the end of your visit inside the tunnel, you can see an incredible lava column measuring 7 m in height. It is the largest lava column in the world! Its formation came from a huge amount of lava, poured between the two levels of the covered passage.

In Manjanggul Lava Tube, large and small passages occur repetitively, it is not all regular in terms of height and width. Continuous supply of hot lava into the tube caused thermal erosion of the tube’s floor resulting in the irregular size. Sometimes the height of the cave reaches 23 meters high. It’s really impressive.

Manjanggul Cave in Jeju 01

Another particularity of the cave is the lave flowlines. When lava flows in a tube the level of the flow is often recorded on the walls. These features are called Lava flowlines. Many flowlines can be found inside Manjanggul.

The cave also has some animals living inside. Manjanggul cave shelters an impressive colony of bats. According to statistics, more than 30,000 specimens have made their home there. In addition, at least 38 other species have been discovered near the caves. But don’t worry, we didn’t see any and didn’t feel scared at all during our visit.

Manjanggul Cave in Jeju 07

We keep such a fond memory of our trip to Manjanggul Cave in Jeju. It is such a unique sight which we highly recommend. Seeing this huge tunnel formed by lava reminded us about how strong Mother Nature can be! Impressive !

Where to stay near Manjanggul cave?

jeju cave tour

We highly recommend staying in Woljeongri Beach, our favorite part of Jeju. From Woljeongri Beach, it’s only a 10-minute drive to reach Jeju Maze Park and Manjanggul Cave.

When staying at Woljeongri Beach, we opted for Lunamar Pool Resort . It was located just a few minutes from the beach, and that’s all we wanted. The room and the resort overall is super modern. We really enjoyed it. The big plus is the swimming pool which was absolutely stunning.

It is not every day that we can experience going on a real Maze and find our childhood spirit back. Hence we 100% recommend experiencing Jeju Maze Park in Gimnyeong.

The park is also very well maintained keeping it as close to nature as possible by only using cypresses. It is ideal for everyone, couples, families, and children, everyone can have fun in the Maze.

Manjanggul cave is only a few minute’s drive from Jeju Maze Park. Hence it’s the perfect combo for a half-day visit on Jeju Island .

Woljeongri beach

Woljeongri Beach_Jeju

If you visit Manjanggul Cave and Jeju Maze Park in the morning, then we highly recommend that you stop for lunch at Woljeongri Beach. Woljeongri is simply our favorite place in Jeju .

The beach, the cafes, the cute restaurants, the surfers, typical Jeju-style stone houses etc. This place is fantastic.

If you go there by car, there are plenty of parking spaces along the beach. If you want to take a surf lesson in the afternoon or simply rent a board, there are plenty of surf shops. Or if you simply want a relaxing walk along the coast of Jeju, then Woljeongri Beach is the best place to do just that!

Hamdeok Beach

Hamdeok Beach_Jeju

We visited many beaches in Korea, but Hamdeok in Jeju stood out for us. The colors of the waters, this particular emerald shade, made us fall in love with Hamdeok instantly. Ever since we went there for the first time, Hamdeok became our #1 visited place in  Jeju  right after landing at the airport.

There is always something to do in Hamdeok: concerts, sporting events, nightlife, the beach is very popular with locals and foreigners. Hotels, restaurants and cafes are numerous in this part of the island, it is easy to practice some water activities such as kayaking and sometimes surfing.  You can check the best spots to surf in South Korea here . And of course, the place is ideal for camping with family or friends.

Hamdeok is perhaps 20min drive from Jeju Maze Park.

Wow! Thank you, this is amazing. I’m going to Jeju in May, looking forward to getting to this lava cave. Didn’t get a chance in Iceland, so won’t miss this one!

Oh enjoy then! It’s really impressive! There are other great caves at Hallim Park, which is a really beautiful place to visit in Jeju –> https://afuncouple.com/hallim-park/

Manjanggul Lava-tube Cave which includes caves

  • Things to do

I only need accommodations for part of my trip

Visit Manjanggul Cave

Wait for your eyes to adjust to the dimmed lighting of the cave and let the spectacular arena of the Manjanggul Cave appear around you. The first thing you will notice is the cathedral-like size of the tunnel. Look closer at the walls and you start to see nature’s artistry at work. Formations of stalactites, stalagmites and a seven-meter high lava column make for a breathtaking sight.

The Manjanggul Cave is a lava tunnel that formed somewhere between 200,000 to 300,000 years ago when molten rock burst free from the earth. While many lava tunnels are barely big enough to enter, the Manjanggul is one of the largest in the world. It reaches heights of 98 feet (30 meters) in places, and spans 75 feet (23 meters) at its widest point. While your visit will only take you just over half a mile (one kilometer) into the cave, the entire network of tunnels runs for over eight miles (13 kilometers).

Climb down the steep wooden staircase into the mouth of the cave. A well-lit walkway will guide you from here. You may want to take a torch, as the light can be dim in places. Most of the interesting rock formations are lit up in a range of colors that add to the cave’s eerie atmosphere.

Don’t miss the Turtle Rock, shaped like a turtle and resembling Jeju Island. The path will take you past a wing shaped wall, before bringing you to the most spectacular rock formation of them all – a giant lava column. At 24 feet (7.6 meters) tall, it’s the largest known lava column in the world.

Keep your eyes peeled for the largest bat colony on Jeju Island that dwells in the cave’s catacombs. There are over 30,000 bats in the cave. Other creatures reside here too, with the Jeju cave spider one of the most notable.

You’ll want to bring a jacket as temperatures in the cave can be chilly, and water drips from the ceiling aren’t uncommon. The walk takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.

Manjanggul Cave is located about 18 miles (30 kilometers) east of Jeju City. A bus ride takes about 30 minutes. It is open daily, with slightly shorter hours in the winter. There is a charge for entry.

Reviews of Manjanggul Cave

This was okay but I just don't like walking underground (dark) to see rocks.

Manjanggul Cave (Jeju)

Manjanggul Cave

Operating Hours

Manjanggul Cave is one of the finest lava tunnels in the world, and is a designated natural monument. A lava tunnel is formed when the lava that was deep in the ground spouts from the peak and flows to the surface. Manjanggul Cave has a variety of interesting structures inside including 70cm lava stalagmites and the lava tube tunnels.

Only 1km of the 13,422m Manjanggul Cave is open to tourists. The inside of the tunnel sustains a temperature of 11~21℃, creating a comfortable atmosphere. There are rare animals such as bats living in the tunnel, which makes this tunnel valuable for researchers as well. The stone pillars and stalactites are widely spread and the tunnels shows off the cave’s topographical features. “Stone Turtle” is especially eye-catching because it is shaped like Jeju-do Island.

Hyeopjaegul Cave

Hyeopjaegul Cave

Hyeopjaegul Cave (협재굴) is one example of the lava tubes of Jeju Island, along with Hwanggeumgul, Socheongul, Ssangyonggul and Manjanggul Caves. The cave is approximately 200m in length, 10m in width and 5m in height. It is thought to have been created by the lava that erupted from Hallasan Mountain some 25 million years ago. This cave uniquely contains features of both lava and limestone caves. The entire area surrounding the cave is a huge stratum of seashells and sand, while the interior of the cave has a mystical ambience due to its various lava formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, which hang from the ceiling and sprout up from the bottom of the cave. Stalactite columns that are formed when stalactites and stalagmites meet each other are also located throughout the cave, so the scenery is very unusual. The cave walls are covered in lime, which at times looks like beautiful cave paintings. The temperature inside the cave stays at 17~18℃ throughout the year, making the cave a welcome escape from the summer heat and a great place to keep warm during winter.

The Hyeopjaegul Cave has been designated Korea’s natural monument No. 236 and ranks among the world’s other major mysterious caves, such as the stone salt cave of Peru and the underwater limestone caves of Yugoslavia. As the Hyeopjaegul Cave is close to the Ssangyonggul Cave (meaning ‘Two Dragons’) the two can be visited together on the same day.

Outstanding Universal Value

Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes is a coherent serial property comprising three components.  The unequalled quality of the Geomunoreum lava tube system and the exhibition of diverse and accessible volcanic features in the other two components demonstrate a distinctive and important contribution to the understanding of global volcanism.

Criterion (vii): The Geomunoreum lava tube system, which is regarded as the finest such cave system in the world, has an outstanding visual impact even for those experienced with such phenomena. It displays the unique spectacle of multi-coloured carbonate decorations adorning the roofs and floors, and dark-coloured lava walls, partially covered by a mural of carbonate deposits.  The fortress-like Seongsan Ilchulbong tuff cone, with its walls rising out of the ocean, is a dramatic landscape feature, and Mount Halla, with its array of textures and colours through the changing seasons, waterfalls, display of multi-shaped rock formations and columnar-jointed cliffs, and the towering summit with its lake-filled crater, further adds to the scenic and aesthetic appeal.

Criterion (viii): Jeju has a distinctive value as one of the few large shield volcanoes in the world built over a hot spot on a stationary continental crust plate.  It is distinguished by the Geomunoreum lava tube system, which is the most impressive and significant series of protected lava tube caves in the world and includes a spectacular array of secondary carbonate speleothems (stalactites and other decorations), with an abundance and diversity unknown elsewhere within a lava cave.  The Seongsan Ilchulbong tuff cone has exceptional exposures of its structural and sedimentological characteristics, making it a world-class location for understanding Surtseyan-type volcanic eruptions.

The property is well managed and resourced, with a management plan in place for the period 2006-2010 and resources for its implementation.  Key management issues include avoiding potential agricultural impact on the underground environment and managing the high number of visitors to the property.  There is potential for further extension of the property to include other significant lava tube systems and volcanic features of Jeju.

Ilchul Land & Land Micheon Cave is a place where you can experience the beauty of nature, located at the point where a new sun rises. Among the 15 cave groups on Jeju Island, Micheon Cave is situated in the southeastern part and stands as one of the representative cave groups, being one of the most important caves on the island. The vast interior extends to 1.7km, but for safety reasons, only a 365m section is currently open to the public.

Micheon Cave is renowned for its impressive scale and majestic width, featuring irregular blocks of lava and lava stalactites within.  When the rain stops and the cave becomes quiet, the sound of water flowing and dripping in the cave adds to the mysterious atmosphere of the underground cavern. The cave’s interior is sufficiently cool, making it easy to forget the hot summer outside while exploring its depths.
