Reinstall Safari after applying 10.6.8 v1.1 updaters

If you updated Safari to version 5.1 and then applied the OS X 10.6.8 v1.1 update, you will need to redownload the latest version of Safari again.

safari mac 10.6 8

When Apple released OS X 10.6.8, a number of people found problems including issues with the printing system that resulted in print jobs hanging. To correct some of these issues, Apple rereleased the update as version 1.1 of the updater; however, if you have applied this update, you may (or may not) notice that your Safari version has reverted.

Apple released the original OS X 10.6.8 update before it released the latest Safari 5.1 update, and then released the revised 10.6.8 updater about 5 days after Safari 5.1 had been out. As a result, the Safari 5.1 update was not included in the 10.6.8 update and people who had been running OS X 10.6.8 and updated to the latest version of Safari will find their installed Safari versions will be back at version 5.0.5 instead of 5.1.

Ultimately this should not be much of a problem for users, as the versions are very close and should still support most of the same features; however, there is a possibility that the older version of Safari may handle a few things differently. OS X should detect the older version of Safari and offer you an update through Software Update, but if not, then you can download the latest version of Safari from Apple's software downloads page .

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

safari mac 10.6 8

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

safari mac 10.6 8

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

safari mac 10.6 8

Customization

Putting the you in url..

Safari is more customizable than ever. Organize your tabs into Tab Groups so it’s easy to go from one interest to the next. Set a custom background image and fine-tune your browser window with your favorite features — like Reading List, Favorites, iCloud Tabs, and Siri Suggestions. And third-party extensions for iPhone, iPad, and Mac let you do even more with Safari, so you can browse the way you want across all your devices.

safari mac 10.6 8

Safari Profiles allow you to separate your history, extensions, Tab Groups, favorites, cookies, and more. Quickly switch between profiles for topics you create, like Personal and Work.

safari mac 10.6 8

Web apps let you save your favorite websites to the Dock on Mac and to the Home Screen on iPhone and iPad. A simplified toolbar and separate settings give you an app-like experience.

safari mac 10.6 8

Safari Extensions add functionality to your browser to help you explore the web the way you want. Find and add your favorite extensions in the dedicated Safari category on the App Store.

safari mac 10.6 8

Save and organize your tabs in the way that works best for you. Name your Tab Groups, edit them, and switch among them across devices. You can also share Tab Groups — making planning your next family trip or group project easier and more collaborative.

Smart Tools

Designed to help your work flow..

Built-in tools create a browsing experience that’s far more immersive, intuitive, and immediate. Get detailed information about a subject in a photo with just a click, select text within any image, instantly translate an entire web page, and quickly take notes wherever you are on a site — without having to switch apps.

safari mac 10.6 8

Notes is your go-to app to capture any thought. And with the Quick Note feature, you can instantly jot down ideas as you browse websites without having to leave Safari.

safari mac 10.6 8

Translation

Translate entire web pages with a single click. You can also get translations for text in images and paused video without leaving Safari.

Interact with text in any image or paused video on the web using functions like copy and paste, translate, and lookup. 6

safari mac 10.6 8

Visual Look Up

Quickly learn more about landmarks, works of art, breeds of dogs, and more with only a photo or an image you find online. And easily lift the subject of an image from Safari, remove its background, and paste it into Messages, Notes, or other apps.

safari mac 10.6 8

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

safari mac 10.6 8

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

safari mac 10.6 8

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

Learn more about Apple Pay

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

safari mac 10.6 8

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

safari mac 10.6 8

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimizations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.

Make Safari your default browser

Delete the copy of Safari that you do have, then download and run the 10.6.8 Update Combo. Hopefully that will give you Safari back. Then run Software Update from the Apple menu and check for the latest version of Safari that way. Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1

Browsers by Mac operating system

As of September 26, 2023, the following browser compatibility exists (order is completely arbitrary):

September 26, 2023 - Sonoma release, and Safari update to version 17 for Ventura and Monterey.

September 21, 2023 - last updates for Ventura, Monterey, and Big Sur.

First by operation system, links to individual browsers by system will follow the list by OS. You may find on download sites earlier versions of these browsers, but they are not necessarily secure, and often these sites have advertisements for malware (the direct operating system links go to how to upgrade to those systems):

14.0 Sonoma - Vivaldi, Safari, Edge, Brave, Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Waterfox (Intel only), iCab

13. 6 Ventura - Vivaldi, Safari, Edge, Brave, Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Waterfox (Intel only), iCab

12. 7 Monterey - Vivaldi, Safari, Edge, Brave, Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Waterfox (Intel only), iCab

11. 7.10 Big Sur - Vivaldi, Edge, Brave, Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Waterfox (Intel only), iCab

10.15.7 * Catalina - Vivaldi, Edge, Brave, Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Waterfox, iCab

First OS to support only 64 bit applications. Safari is not up to date on this or any older operating system

10.14.6 Mojave - Vivaldi, Edge, Brave, Chrome, Opera, Firefox 115 last release, Waterfox, iCab

10.13.6 High Sierra - Vivaldi, Edge, Brave, Chrome, Opera, Firefox 115 last release, Waterfox, iCab

10.12.6 Sierra - Vivaldi, Omniweb, Edge, Brave, Chrome, Opera, Firefox 115 last release, Waterfox, iCab. 10.12.4 first OS

to support Apple iCloud/account multifactor authentication. Previous OSes may support the code as a suffix to the password entered.

10.11.6 El Capitan - VIvaldi, Omniweb, Brave, Chrome, Opera, Firefox (July 2021 last Security update), Waterfox, iCab

note: for many El Capitan is the end of the line for their model. Any Mac that can be upgraded to 10.8.5 can be upgraded to 10.11.6

10.10.5 Yosemite - Omniweb, Firefox (July 2021 last Security update), Waterfox, iCab

10.9.5 Mavericks - Omniweb, Firefox (July 2021 last Security update), Waterfox, iCab

10.8.5 Mountain Lion - Omniweb, Arctic Fox, Waterfox, iCab, Spiderweb, Snow Monkey (10.8.3 is minimum for Java 8)

10.7.5 Lion - Omniweb, Arctic Fox, Waterfox, iCab, Spiderweb, Snow Monkey (10.7.3 is minimum for Java 7)

10.4 Tiger, 10.5 Leopard, 10.6.8 Snow Leopard - Omniweb, iCab, Tenfourfox, Spiderweb, Snow Monkey, Interweb PPC listed primarily for PowerPC on 10.4 and 10.5

10.3 to 10.3.9 Panther - Classila, iCab, Tenfourfox

10.2.8 Jaguar and earlier, Classila and iCab.

Note: Chromium is not to be confused with Chrome. As many users have found Chromium early sources before it was secured, I do not mention it, and recommend only using the above browsers unless you are sure the Chromium version you are using is safe. Edge was based off of Chromium's original genuine distribution.

September 26, 2023 Safari 17 only available for Monterey, Ventura, and Sonoma

September 21, 2023 Safari 16.6.1 Last available version for Big Sur via Apple menu -> About This Mac -> Software Update.

August 18, 2022 Safari 15.6.1 Last update for Catalina through Apple menu -> About This Mac -> Software Update.

Safari 17.2.1 is the latest and is available only for Monterey, Sonoma and Ventura through Apple menu -> About This Mac -> Softawre Update. Prior releases of Safari are not as secure, and may have certificate issues with some websites. Use an alternate web browser if you aren't running one of these three operating systems.

Microsoft Edge - For Mac OS 10.12 and later .

Tenfourfox - PowerPC browser for Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.5.8 . Per comments below the G3 release works on 10.6 Rosetta.

Classila - Mac OS 8.6 to X 10.3.9 .

iCab - Every Mac OS since before X to present.

Chromium - not referenced because of the early releases ending up being used as a fake substitute for Chrome because of naming by many trojan horse authors. The ability to tell the difference between the two releases has never been fully documented from what I have seen.

Wavebrowser - another browser that has been distributed to unlikely victims. who think just any web browser might be good.

Apple's operating system by name:

Adobe Flash as of December 31, 2020 is no longer supported. There is an uninstaller on Adobe's website.

Visit Java.com for Java updates. Java 8v202 is last open license released by Oracle. Later releases may have specific financial obligations to Oracle depending on your company license agreement. Java is frequently used as a backend for many crossplatform stand alone applications, so if you depend on third party applications, make sure the version you need works with all of them before changing the version on your computer. Clone backup your data before changing your Java.

Some historical tidbits: Javascript is client based rendering code that is browser dependent, and in the case of ECMA support platform dependent, as Microsoft wrote its own counterpart to Javascript called JScript. ActiveX based rendering is platform dependent, and you will want to consider running a Microsoft Windows platform operating system on your Mac if you need to browse such sites. Windows XP was the last version of Internet Explorer not to support HTML5, whereas Windows 7 had a version of Internet Explorer to support HTML5, which is completely server based website rendering. To avoid browser incompatibility, it is best to use server based coding that does not require plugins. See both W3.org and Anybrowser.org for tidbits.

Another excellent resource for web browsers is https://www.macstrategy.com/article.php?6

*July 24, 2023 Apple released the last Safari patch for Big Sur, and Monterey via Software Update in the Apple menu, and not the Software Download website. Safari 15.6 was the last update for Catalina, on July 20, 2022.

Nicely done.

Brave Browser, Chrome without google & without Ads, generally uses 2/3rds as much RAM as Safari & FireFox.

TenFourFox G3 also seems to work well in 10.6.8 using Rosetta.

Pactricia666

Mar 26, 2021 1:31 PM

Definitely agree with the Brave browser.

Mar 26, 2021 5:40 PM

When you say Tenfourfox for G3, you mean for G3 processors runs nicely as a Rosetta application? Is there something wrong with the g4 or g5 versions? Is the lack of PowerPC altivec on the Intels preventing it from running on 10.6? Does running 10.6 on later Macs with i3 to i7 processors up to 2010 allow Tenfourfox to run ok on any of those releases?

The link for Snow Leopard is to an article from 2015.

Do you have a more up-to-date recommendation for the best browser for 10.6.8?

Mar 26, 2021 6:04 PM

TenFourFox for G3, means the Rosetta, (PPC emulation), implementation is more faithful & robust for the G3, basic PPC CPU than the various PPC CPUs with Altivec like the G4 & G5... at least that's what I believe.

You should add Vivaldi to your list. Vivaldi was created by one of the original Opera co-founders. Vivaldi is based on Chromium with some customizations, but with lots of extra features and has options to disable some of the Chrome parts if a user doesn't want them. At this time Vivaldi is compatible with macOS 10.11. Vivaldi is as close as you can get to the classic Opera v12.16 browser (RIP Opera v12.16).

Hi everyone! I have difficulties with Safari 6 on OS 10.8 Mountain Lion... When i attempt to connect to various secure http sites, Safari will fail to connect, saying "safari can't open the page because safari can't establish a secure connection to the server" Other times, a small rectangle will appear within the address bar labelled https, and all will be well. It's quite random and irritating. To get it to word again, sometimes a relaunch does the trick, sometimes I have to reset safari. Is there something I can do? Thanks!

I've not incurred that problem myself. Did you try clearing out the cache? (Safari menu->Empty Cache)?

I've just tried a secure connection ( Https://mail.domain.co.za/owa ) and works fine here.

Safari 6 cant make a secure connection I am was having the same issue. Seems to be most secure sites... including parts of the apple website. Have reset Safari twice and still not access many sites that require a secure connection .. including my bank Solved by restarting safari..... turning off Rapport in system preferences....then restarting safari again..... then restarting rapport

I found what helped was re-installing Rapport.. Downloaded again from Trusteer's website and it seems fine at the moment

  • Jul 30, 2012

Ive been having the same problem as well. It works if I delete the cache file but the problem returns the next day, so I have to delete the file daily. I havent tried deleting / reinstalling rapport yet.

I'm having the same problem but don't have Rapport installed.

  • Jul 31, 2012

similar issue I am finding that safari wont connect to any site, on a random basis, though I haven't yet tried the fix here, i.e. clearing cache. I will have 6 tabs open, and they won't update after a point in use. Only once had the secure site connection issue raised. How do we report this to Apple?

Unable to connect to secure sites Hi, I am having the same problems as you mention here since installing Mountain Lion; however, they only seem to occur on certain WiFi connections. When I connect using LAN at work, everything works fine. I also cannot send emails using SSL, I cannot connect to MSN and I cannot open Dropbox. All these issues happen on my home WiFi. Any clues as to how to solve this?

  • Aug 1, 2012

I was having the same issues (working off LAN, non WiF)i, could not connect to any https site, even apple sites. After doing some searching I downloaded Trusteer Rapport, uninstalled the program and then reinstalled the latest version. Everything seems to be working just fine now.

It's a problem with your network configuration. I don't have Rapport and have the same issue; I found the solution to this problem somewhere on the web. I don't know exactly what I am changing but is easy to be done and solves the problem. You can undone this changes easily, so give it a try. Open System Preferences and choose Network. From the list of connections select WiFi or Ethernet (whichever you use or one at a time) and click advanced... Select the Hardware option and change the MTU setting to 1300 You may need to put custom in order to introduce the number. Save and Apply the changes. I don't remember if I restarted my Mac, so first quit your browser, reopen it and try to go to a secure site, it happens with Facebook and even with the help forums at Apple. I am sorry that I can't give credit to the guy how post this somewhere else.

chicagozfinest

  • Aug 23, 2013

Anyone still having problems with this? I tried reducing the MTU to 1300 (using WiFi and ethernet) to no avail. Is anyone still experiencing this issue? This seems specific to 10.8. A couple of older ones (10.6 &*10.5) worked as expected. One thing to note that I am trying to connect to a server with a self-signed cert. So if everything worked as expected, Safari would pop up and "Are you sure you want to go here?" screen (as it did in 10.6). Does anyone know of anything else I can try?
