We invite you to visit a classic European brewery in Riga and see with your own eyes how your favorite amber-colored drink is made. The staff use only carefully selected natural ingredients, and with the help of traditional centuries-old technology they transform them into excellent unfiltered and unpasteurized beer!

After a 15-minute guided Brewery Tour , you will have a Beer Tasting in the cozy restaurant of the brewery. You will taste all five beers produced in the place, two of them are exclusive and produced only in this brewery. Delicious hearty snacks - grilled sausages, chicken wings, chicken fingers, cheese sticks, dried crust with garlic - will be the perfect complement to beer! If you wish, you can also order additional dishes from the extensive and varied menu of the restaurant.

The brewery is located in the very center of Riga and can be reached on foot from most central hotels. On Fridays and Saturdays, the restaurant offers its guests a special show program. Memorable performances, funny contests with prizes and other surprises await you. On the second floor of the Brewery in Riga there is a beer sports bar that can accommodate up to 250 people. In total, the capacity of the brewery with a restaurant is about 350 people, not counting the summer terrace. Therefore, this Riga Brewery is very popular for large companies of Stag and Hen parties in Riga, for birthday celebrations or corporate parties.

If you enjoyed our absolute favorite Beer Bike already, it will be ideal to see where the drinks are produced.  There are so many great secrets in brewing process and you will be entitled to try 3 of the masterpieces made.  Taking part in this visit early on in the holiday will be a good idea as it will mean you don’t spend the first few days trying beers you don’t really want. Guide will pick you up and take you to the brewery. You will spend some time touring the best local brewery and learning all about the process of beer making and then you get the chance to try some of the beers before being returned to your hotel. The guide speaks English so there will be no problem understanding what is being said about the beer production. Tours are run all year long and as with many of the other attraction there needs to be 8 people to book. Once you have finished the tour, you will be ready to go out on the town and enjoy the rest of the day in a happy frame of mind.

Riga, the capital of Latvia, is a great destination for a short city holiday, especially during the summer season. The historical, beautiful old town of Riga is a tourist favourite, but it’s well worth to explore the city also outside of it. Riga is also wonderful for craft beer enthusiasts, with a lot of breweries, tap rooms and craft beer pubs. Riga Beer District is a unique joint effort of 10 pubs, gastro pubs and brewpubs in central Riga offering delicious craft beers, food and culture. There is a 2,5 km long walking route connecting all the venues, and you can either follow it independently, or book a guided tour. In Riga Beer District you can choose your favorites from over 100 craft beer varieties from Latvia and other Baltic countries. The goal of Riga Beer District is to ‘promote the diversity of flavors offered by small craft beer breweries to both Latvia’s beer lovers and visitors from near and far’ .

History of Riga Beer District

Riga has been a brewing centre for a long time. Back in the 19th century, there were three large breweries operating in the exact same part of the town, where Riga Beer District is today. First one of them, Kunzendorff Brewery, was established in 1796, and was in full bloom in early 20th century. Kunzendorff had warehouses not only in Latvia, but also in Estonia, Russia and Ukraine. The other beer giants of Riga were C. L. Kymmel Brewery and C. Stritzky Brewery. As we know, the wars of early 20th century changed pretty much everything in Baltic countries, and the events led also to the end of existence of these breweries. Two latter ones were closed at the time of the First World War, and Kunzendorff struggled until the Soviet occupation in 1940.

The new era of craft beer has brought new life to the industrial neighborhood of these former breweries. According to Riga Beer District websites, the first new brewery to open its doors was Valmiermuiža Brewery’s Beer Embassy in Riga. It was soon followed by smaller breweries and bars; Labietis Brewery, Ziemeļu Enkurs Brewery, the beer pubs Taka and Walters & Grapa, bar Vest, Old Brewery Arts Bar Autentika, and heavy metal friendly Zobens un Lemess bar. Few hundred meters towards the old town opened the Alķīmiķis pub and brewery, and also Kanepes Culture Center, that serves beer with arts, is part of the Beer District.

A tour in Riga Beer District

We have visited Riga several times, and often headed to Riga Beer District. Here we provide an itinerary for walking around the area, visiting part (or all if you dare) of the taprooms and bars. A tip for your tour; take care that you have the pubs and breweries marked on a map before you head out, as not all of them are easy to find. There are orange-colored Beer District leaflets with a map and some info available in at least part of the places, and the Beer District website is helpful as well. If you’d like to learn more about the Beer District as you go, you could book a guided tour, that includes craft beer tastings and some snacks.

We started from Alkimikis (Lāčplēša 12 ), brewpub that is situated closest to the city center. We have visited this friendly restaurant several times when staying in Riga, and really like the beers and the atmosphere, and the food is delicious also! Alkimikis has four own beer varieties permanently on tap, and a brew-masters selection of three beers changing every season, plus one beer that is changing every month. Next stop of the beer district route is the Kanepes Culture Center (Skolas Street 15), just two blocks away. We haven’t visited, but according to Beer District website, the Culture Center has live music performances by local and international artists, and a beer selection of 8 tabs and 20 more varieties in bottles.

Two blocks northeast, you’ll find Vest (Stabu Street 1 ), a restaurant and bar with roughly 50 varieties of beer from Latvia and other Baltic countries, and some from Scandinavia as well. On weekends it’s home to late-hour parties with music from vinyl records, and at times it turn to a sports bar. On the other side of the block we ran into one of the sites that Riga Beer District is about, the premises of C.L. Kymmel Brewery that operated from 1850 until the WWI. Autentika (Bruņinieku Street 2 ) is an arts and event bar, operating in one of the old brewery buildings. It’s not a brewpub though, and actually at the time of our visit the selection of beers was pretty limited. We stopped for one pint however, to enjoy the environment and the laid-back feeling of this pub.

The walk further northeast towards another old brewery site takes you past the handsome buildings of Riga’s first hospital and some old villas. The former C. Stritzky brewing complex is nowadays home to Valmiermuiža Beer Embassy in Riga (Aristīda Briāna Street 9a). Their gastro pub and shop has a wide selection of beer, more than 100 varieties in total, and the beer kitchen serves Latvian cuisine tailored to be enjoyed with beer. Their own brews are mostly lagers, but they had some Valmiermuiža ales available in bottles. For craft beer lovers like us, Labietis brewpub around the corner is a small piece of heaven. This microbrewery makes delicious artisan beers and organizes workshops where you can watch the beer being made. Prices of their tasty ales in tap begin from 3 euros per 0,5 liter. There is a cozy terrace outside the brewpub, and when we have visited, it has been pretty full of beer enthusiasts. Labietis also has a tap room and bottle shop in Riga Central Market.

On the way back towards town, we walked past Zobens un Lemess (Aristīda Briāna Street 10), a bar that claims to offer heavy metal and strong beer. It’s a meeting point for friends of darker sounds and craft beer, with six beer taps and 18 varieties in bottles. Sounds tempting, right? Around the corner is Walter’s and Grapa (Miera Street 19), a pub serving craft beers from Baltic breweries. This small bar, built and opened by three friends, is home to parties and life music performances, and serves beer from Latvia and beyond from 8 taps and has selection of over 40 bottled varieties. Taka (Miera Street 10) is another craft beer oriented pub, serving the products of the smallest breweries, sometimes even varieties that don’t even have a name yet. There are also some live performances of alternative music, film screenings and board games.

Our last stop was Ziemeļu Enkurs (Matīsa Street 8), a small brewery and brewpub on historical site of the former Kuntzendorff Brewery. Ziemelu manufactures artisan beer with only natural ingredients, and the pub serves also meals to be enjoyed with beer. There is a cozy roof-top terrace with views over the former brewery buildings. It was a nice venue for enjoying some late night ales on our way back to our hostel.

Riga Beer District

In the 19th century, Riga was a brewing city. By joining their forces, ten Latvian breweries decided to restore the fame of the ancient Northern European citadel for brewing and create the Riga Beer District . Ten pubs, ten different stories and experiences – beer lovers have the opportunity to visit them individually or on specially designed beer tours accompanied by an enthusiastic guide. At four stops, Latvian craft beer varieties are enjoyed together with delicious snacks. And the employees at the small pubs are happy to explain how craft beer is made. Great entertainment for a group of friends or a group of up to 10 people.

Brewery "Labietis"

Brewery "Labietis" uses more than 20 different medicinal plants collected in Latvia, local honey, more than 10 types of berries and fruits collected in Latvia, as well as barley, wheat and rye malts mostly grown in Latvia.

Brewery Nurme

The story of Nurme Brewery is special. In 2020, a crowdfunding campaign was organized, in which fans and supporters of this beer proved that Nurme needs a brewery location of its own! Raising the necessary funds, the industrial brick pearl built in 1900 on Vagonu Street is now turning into the Nurme Brewery District. 

Brewery Užavas alus

The small village of Užava is located 27 km from Ventspils, and this is where you will find the  Užava Brewery , founded in 1994. Water is crucial to make delicious beer, and thanks to the high water quality, Užava was chosen as the most suitable place for beer production. Besides tasting and buying beer on-site, the brewery offers tours about the history, beer brewing and much more.

The banks of the River Abava were once the northernmost vineyards in Europe. Currently it is home to the  winery ‘Abava’ , and not only wine but also cider is made here – from apples grown in Latvia. Here you will be able to buy and enjoy the slightly bitter, hop-added cider, Premium Brut’s more acidic cider and Meadow Cider, supplemented with meadow herbs and flower extracts. Excursions and tastings are also available to genuinely enjoy the taste of Latvia.

Brewery VIEDI

The small brewery ‘VIEDI’ admits itself – “we do it differently”. Although the brewery does not refer to deep ancestral traditions and recipes, be prepared for experiments and new flavours! Currently, there are 18 different types of beer available, and everyone will definitely find their favourite. If you book in advance, you can go on a tour around the brewery.

Brewery Zoltners

Zoltners is found near the town of Tērvete – combining a restaurant, hotel and brewery in one. Guests are welcome to enjoy the tranquillity, atmosphere and rustic landscape of this place.

According to the owners, the local beer shall be enjoyed slowly, along with good food and conversations, tasting every sip. Visitors to the restaurant will be advised on the best combination of Zoltners beer and food to fully enjoy all the nuances of beer taste.

Valmiermuiža brewery

If you are heading in the direction of Valmiera, we definitely recommend visiting V almiermuiža brewery , and not only to visit, but to see for yourself how their drinks are made. Quality water is the key to making good beer. And the water coming from the depths of Valmiermuiža creates its high-quality taste – you will definitely learn about this and many other things during beer tasting! Also, here you will find out which dishes best pair with different types of beer, as well as many other tips to enjoy your beer.

Madona beer in Bodnieki

Madona beer is made in Bodnieki, Madona Municipality – it is a parish with its brewing traditions dating back to 1916. Continuing the old traditions, light and dark beer is made here, which can be bought all over Latvia. The Madona honey beer, on the other hand, can only be enjoyed on site – by visiting the Madona Beer Terrace, which serves authentic Georgian dishes. To go on a tour around the brewery, make sure to make a booking!

Tālava cider

The town of Gulbene, which was once called Tālava, is home to Tālava cider since 2014. Cider and other drinks created in the brewery are made from 100% Latvian apples, supplementing the flavours with natural fruit and berry juices or hops. Bold experiments and surprisingly new flavours – it’s all about Tālava cider! Hot drinks and apple brandy are also made here.

If you want to taste these drinks in Tālava, you can book a tour. The tour includes tastings of at least 7 different types of cider, apple brandy, as well as snacks tailored to the drinks.

Does Mr. Plūme produce cider from plums? No, the name of the brewery comes from the surname of the owners – Māris and Dace. Not only is cider made here, but also fruit and berry wines, as well as spirits, which have also won prizes in various international competitions.

If you wish to get to know Mr. Plūme more closely, go on a tour where you will learn how the owners got to make cider, what cider is and how to make cider at home. And of course, the cider house offers tastings and cider for sale.

Homemade beer Kolnasāta

The motto of the farm is: “Real Latgale beer is made here!” If you want to not only observe, but participate in the brewing, then we recommend visiting the home brewery ‘Kolnasāta’, near Lake Lubāna. Brewing takes place in wooden containers (tubs), on a wood stove, from homemade malt, which is dried in a black bath from barley grown on their own farm. This is truly an authentic and hospitable experience that can only be experienced in Latgale!

There are more and more beer and cider breweries emerging in Latvia, and people are really proud of them! There is even a special map of breweries , where you can see the locations of the breweries and visit several on one trip.

While leisurely brewing the popular beer varieties in Latvia, Valmiermuiža masters continue to look for new flavors to constantly surprise the demanding beer connoisseur

Keeping the traditions of Valmiermuiža in mind, the Craft Brewery’s landlords have firmly decided that a famous place merits a famous beer. So we welcome everyone to see how a live beer is unhurriedly brewed from three types of malt and two varieties of noble hops. During your visit you’ll have the chance to discover how to taste beer in the manner of lords.

Riga Beer District is a place, which every self-respecting beer lover should visit at least once.

Latvia is a land, where beer has been highly esteemed for centuries, and where a continuous search goes on for new flavours, unique to this region, which explains why so many craft breweries are sprouting up in Latvia.

In the 19th century, Riga was a capital of brewing, a place where sweet  miestiņš  beer flowed in streams and breweries worked non-stop to provide Rigans and neighbouring communities with the most delicious beer to drink from day to day, and with which to grace festive tables. The three biggest breweries were located close to one another – it was reputed far and wide that the most suitable water could be found in this part of the city. 

Looked forward to Latvia’s centenary, Valmiermuiža Brewery and its friends decided to renew Riga’s historical renown as a Northern European brewing citadel. They joined forces and launched the Riga Beer District. Their goal is to promote the diversity of flavours offered by small craft breweries to both Latvia’s beer lovers and visitors from near and far. 

In a unique location, in the very heart of the city, between three historical breweries: the former premises of the  Bier und Porterbrauerei und Malzfabrik C. Stritzky  production plant on A.Briāna Street, the giant buildings of the C. L. Kymmel  brewery on the corner of Bruņinieku Street and Valdemāra Street, and   the buildings of the Bierbrauerei Gust. Kuntzendorff  brewery ,  ten pubs have sprung up, which all sell craft beer brewed in Latvia and the Baltic region. Each of which has its own character, and some of which come complete with their own brewery. 

The first to open its doors in this  neighbourhood, was Valmiermuiža Brewery’s Beer Embassy in Riga. It was subsequently joined by other brewers and traders.

Pubs with varying characters, contrasting locals, who all share a love of quality beer brewed by true masters, as well as a locale unique not only in Riga and Latvia, but in the whole of Northern Europe – the Beer District.

A VENERABLE HISTORY

In the 19th century,  the three biggest breweries were located close to one another.  The first was opened in 1796 by Baltic-German trader Gustav Kunzendorff, who opened a brewery named  Bierbrauerei Gust.Kunzendorff  on erstwhile Matveja Street. At the start of the 20th century its operations were so extensive that the company’s warehouses could not only be found in Riga and Liepaja, but as far afield as Kiev, Peterhof, Revel (Tallinn), Yuryev (Tartu) and Arensburg (Kuressaar). Unlike the majority of breweries, wars could not disrupt the operations of the Kunzendorff Brewery, which continued until the Soviet occupation in 1940.

In 1850, a brewery that had been owned for decades by the family of Peter Rudolf Kimmel, a trader in Russia’s third guild, relocated to a new beer and malt production facility on Bruņinieku Street, where it bore the name of  Bierbrauierei und malz fabrik C.L.Kymmel , and operated right up to the First World War.

Last, but not least, in 1854 a brewery was opened on A.Briāna Street, which was subsequently bought in 1868 by Baltic-German trader and entrepreneur Karl Kristoph von Stritzky, in order to produce not only beer, but also porter and other malt beverages under the name of  Bier und Porterbrauerei und Malzfabrik C.Stritzky . As late as 1913, the Stritzky Brewery was the biggest and most profitable of all Riga’s breweries, with the exception of the Iļģuciems Brewery operating in Pārdaugava. Unfortunately, the golden days of Stritzky Brewery ended with the advent of the First World War.
