Introduced nearly a decade ago, the aging mid-size Journey has survived this long thanks to its affordability and practicality, but it’s decidedly lacking in the latest technology and safety equipment. Despite the availability of five trim packages, the choice of inline-four and V-6 engines, front- or all-wheel drive, and five- or seven-passenger seating, the Journey is just not truly competitive with the best family crossovers. It’s only worth considering if there’s a steep discount working in your favor.

What's New for 2017?

Not much. Other than a few new paint colors, the Journey’s biggest update this year was the renaming of its top trim level from R/T to GT.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base Journey comes with an underpowered 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an ancient four-speed automatic transmission that’s best avoided. We can confidently say that its 173 horsepower isn't enough to adequately power this two-ton SUV. Even the 283-hp V-6 model is slower than most rivals. The bigger engine is punchy enough for everyday driving, but its six-speed automatic transmission is sometimes slow on the uptake when you request more power, hampering the Journey’s responsiveness. Front-wheel drive is standard with either engine; all-wheel drive is optional on the V-6 and not available with the inline-four. The Journey’s numb, ponderous handling leaves it wallowing in corners with lots of body roll and imprecise steering. The benefit of its soft suspension, however, is a comfortable ride on the freeway.

Fuel Economy

The Journey’s cabin is far from upscale, and fitting anyone in the third row—even children—requires compromises from those in the second row. Cheap-feeling bits, such as a plasticky shifter and hollow-sounding interior door-trim panels, are especially egregious in higher-trim Journeys. Several luxury features, including a power-adjustable passenger seat, cooled seats, and heated rear seats are notable in their absence from the options list. Practicality is one of the few areas where the Journey shines: its interior is easily configurable, and it has tons of cubby storage for odds and ends, even if its total cargo capacity isn’t as large as some rivals.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Journey comes with the same easy-to-use Uconnect touchscreen as many other Dodge products. However, only the optional system, with its larger screen, incorporates the latest connectivity features. The Journey’s standard infotainment setup has a small 4.3-inch touchscreen with only the basics: AM/FM radio, a USB port, and an auxiliary audio jack. We’d choose the optional 8.4-inch touchscreen, which has much larger touch zones and more available features, including optional navigation, voice command, and Bluetooth connectivity. Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto is offered, and there’s only a a single USB port up front.

If you're willing to pay a bit more, consider the 2018 Kia Sorento . Like the Journey, the Sorento features a user-friendly infotainment system and offers a comfortable ride. Beyond that, the Kia and the Journey are worlds apart. The Sorento has a higher fuel economy rating, more passenger room, and a little more overall cargo space. The Kia's cabin is also more upscale than the Journey's.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2017 Dodge Journey the highest rating of Good in four crash tests and the lowest rating of Poor in the driver-side small overlap front crash test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Journey four out of five stars overall, along with four stars in frontal and rollover crash tests and five stars in the side crash test.

Available advanced safety features include a rearview camera and rear parking sensors.

2017 Dodge Journey Versus the Competition

The 2017 Kia Sorento is one of the highest-ranked midsize crossovers in the class. Unlike the Journey, it has top-notch predicted reliability, high safety scores, and an upscale cabin. Besides the Journey's lower average list price, there's really no reason to go on this Journey.

Which Is Better: 2017 Dodge Journey or 2017 Dodge Durango?

If you still want to stay in the Dodge family, the 2017 Dodge Durango also sits in the midsize SUV class. Though both vehicles have low predicted reliability, the Durango is the better SUV of the two. Inside, the Durango has a larger cargo bay and more passenger space. Performance-wise, the Durango has a powerful base engine and nimble handling – things you can't say about the Journey.

How does the 2017 dodge journey drive.

The Journey has a comfortable ride, but it exhibits excessive body roll around corners. A sluggish 173-horsepower four-cylinder engine powers the 2017 Dodge Journey. However, some models come with a stronger 283-horsepower V6. The standard four-speed automatic transmission is outdated and unrefined. The V6 comes with a six-speed automatic that is slow to downshift. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

The base 2-row 2017 Dodge Journey seats five. Some higher trims add a third row that increases capacity to seven. The first two rows are adult friendly, but only the young can fit in the optional third row. Cloth upholstery is standard, but some models come with leather upholstery and heated front seats.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2017 Dodge Journey?

There are two full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors on the 2017 Journey's second-row outboard seats. There’s also an upper tether and a right lower anchor on the middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Journey the second-lowest rating of Marginal for its ease of use. Some upper tethers are hard to find and can be confused with other hardware. Also, some lower anchors are too deep in the seats and difficult to maneuver around.

2017 journey new car test drive, introduction.

If you need a minivan but don't want a minivan, the Dodge Journey is for you. Except for the doors, that's basically what it is. It's the most affordable seven-seat crossover on the market. It's also the longest running without a redesign. It hasn't gotten the attention of Chrysler in the way that the Dodge Durango or the Jeeps have.  Base engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder making just 173 horsepower, mated to an obsolete 4-speed automatic transmission. That powertrain is inexpensive but outdated.  Chrysler's fine 3.6-liter V6 is the upgrade engine and is necessary to move the 5000-pound Journey. It makes a that's-more-like-it 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, mated to a 6-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive available.  Without modern technology, the four-cylinder engine gets 19/25 mpg City/Highway, or 21 miles per gallon Combined, while the much more powerful V6 gets an EPA-estimated 16/24/19 mpg.  Because of its ancient design, the Journey doesn't score all that well in crash tests. It gets an acceptable four stars overall from the NHTSA, but scores a Poor on the IIHS's difficult small-overlap frontal crash test.  Still, the thing is, the base Journey SE is special. There's nothing like its affordability and utility. The Hyundai Santa Fe with three rows is a better car than the Journey SE, but it's more costly. The upper-scale Journey models with the V6 are better, but no better than their competition.  For 2017, the R/T models have been rebadged as GT. 

2017 Dodge Journey SE ($20,995) comes with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine cloth upholstery, power windows, dual-zone climate control, steering-wheel audio controls, storage bins in the floor, and a six-speaker sound system with 4.3-inch touchscreen. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is optional ($26,595). The third-row seat is an option. (Prices are MSRP and do not include destination charge.) Journey SXT ($24,895) adds foglamps, LED taillamps, and power mirrors. There's also an appearance package with black trim and 19-inch wheels. Journey Crossroad ($26,295) gets 19-inch wheels, and a 8.4-inch touchscreen. The V6 engine is optional.  Journey GT ($31,795) comes with the V6 engine, leather upholstery, upgraded audio and other features. 

The Journey's slab sides are dated, as nowadays crossovers have rounded edges. The Durango is all warm and organic, but Dodge designers haven't been assigned to give the same treatment to Journey. It's angular and creased. But, looking on the positive side, the flat surfaces are easy to wash. 

Unlike the outside, the Journey is smooth and swoopy inside, and easier to love. The cabin is not as modern as that of the Durango, but it's attractive enough. The instrumentation is simple, with big dials and knobs and high-quality plastics on the sculpted dash and contoured centerstack. The materials are dark, but there's enough brightwork to balance that. The fabric upholstery is rugged, and the optional leather has mesh inserts.  Where the Journey is strong, is in storage, with plenty of cubby holes and bins, including under the front passenger seat. There's a ton of cargo space, with 37 cubic feet behind the second row, 10.7 cubic feet behind the available third row, or 67 cubic feet if the seats are dropped to the flat floor.  Outward rearview vision is poor. The optional rearview camera is needed. 

Driving Impression

The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is rough. Its 173 and 166 pound-feet of torque can't move the Journey very well, certainly not with the 4-speed automatic transmission that would be at home in a Caravan from the 1970s.  The smooth 3.6-liter V6 comes from the modern world, with 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and its 6-speed automatic is an appropriate match.  We saved the best for last. The Journey feels like a lower and leaner vehicle than it looks, with handling that's fairly well sorted for a vehicle this size. The steering ratio is a bit quick, but at least the old-school hydraulic steering has the right amount of resistance.  And the Journey's ride is one of its strengths, with proper damping and good roll control. The suspension loads and unloads with confidence, with no wallowing over pavement ripples that might come in the middle of a corner. 

Dodge Journey delivers big passenger space and is inexpensive. It's a dated product, however, especially with the standard four-cylinder, 4-speed. The 3.6-liter V6 brings it more up to date, but there's also a lot of competition at that price point.  Sam Moses contributed to this review, with staff reports from The Car Connection.

Smaller than the typical mid-sized SUV, the Journey is a dated and mediocre performer. It rides well and is quiet, but that's about all. It suffers from a lack of agility, lousy fuel economy from the optional 3.6-liter V6, a reluctant transmission, and a tiny third-row seat. Our top-of-the-line Journey Lux's high price makes it a poor value anywhere outside a rental lot; the same sticker price buys the much better Kia Sorento. Poor IIHS small overlap crash-test results add to the long list of demerits.

The 2011 reworking brought a much nicer interior and a better V6, but the lack of agility and still-mediocre fuel economy keep it out of the top ranks. Three row seating became standard for 2018.  Ultimately, we think you'd be better served looking at something else. The V6 engine and all-wheel drive were dropped in 2020 and the Journey finally came to an end.

Solid, economical, reliable transportation

Bought new in October 2017. 85,000+ miles. Needs new set of tires (previous set went 40,000+ miles) and a new battery (original battery dying after 69 months). Otherwise just (full synthetic) oil changes and routine maintenance. 2.4L 4-cyl. engine/4-sp. automatic trans. runs strong. 21 MPG in town, 30 MPG on the highway. Good winter traction with the right tires. Nothing inside or outside has fallen off that wasn't helped off by road debris. I wanted basic transportation without all the bling - this vehicle has more than filled the bill.

Review: Moscow City Ballet’s The Nutcracker at The Regent Theatre*

Last night, we went to see the magical story of The Nutcracker by the Moscow City Ballet at The Regent Theatre . Traditionally a Christmas tale, however, the Moscow City Ballet are currently just starting their UK 2020 Tour, which is due to last the next couple of months. On their roster, is Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and of course the Nutcracker, all being played in various cities around the UK and also three special performances (of each story) in Dublin.

Moscow City Ballet was started back in 1988 by the acclaimed choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov, who sadly passed away in 2013. The company was taken over by his wife Ludmila Nerubashenko as Artistic Director. She had been Principle Ballet Mistress since 1993, therefore, was well equipped to take over his role. Smirnov-Golovanov’s concept was to allow artist licence to his dancers, with certain aspects of the choreography, allowing them the freedom to add in parts to the dance as long as they didn’t sway too far from the original choreographic concept.

What we thought of the Nutcracker

The Nutcracker, originally a story by Prussian writer E.T.A. Hoffman, written in 1814, and then adapted by the famous French writer Alexandre Dumas in 1844. This adaptation, then went onto be the inspiration for  Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Ballet of the same name which was completed in 1892.

Tchaikovsky iconic score of this Ballet is recognisable by all ages through all generations. I am sure you will remember as a child seeing or opening the classic children’s jewellery boxes that contained a dancing ballerina playing the music from this beautiful ballet? You will have heard the music on TV adverts, films and even weaved within nursery rhymes.

The Ballet begins with the Christmas Eve Party, where Clara first sees the Nutcracker. During this time the dancers are introducing you to the characters of the Nutcracker, the doll and the Mouse King. After the loosely choreographed first scene the dancers awoke to their centre stage performance that became a total delight. In scene two you are taken to the enchanted Forest where the blue tutus of the Ballerinas bounce, as their synchronised toes float across the stage.

The orchestra, although quiet at times, played beautifully and perfectly matched the pitter-patter of the ballet dancers movements across the boards of the theatre. As previously mentioned its such an iconic score and so delightful to hear live, however, it was a shame that it did at times lack a bit of oompf you would expect. I am not sure if this was down to the size of the orchestra or the dynamics of The Regent Theatre. That being said – my feet were still tapping at the most recognisable parts.

The second act makes for a truly magical performance, where the dancing flowers and fairies decorate the stage. We see how skilled some of the ballet dancers are as they jump and drift across the floor. It is with this combination of elegant movement and classical music, that makes the Nutcracker the perfect Ballet for those young and old who want to hold onto the magic of Christmas whatever the season.

Each ending in many different productions of this classic tale over the years have been different, and this also includes aspects of the narrative in the middle too. But Each one means that if you have seen this Ballet several times over the years, it means that you more than likely won’t have seen the same one!

Tickets are now on sale and available from the Box Office, by calling 0844 871 7649 or by visiting ATG’s website here .

How long is the show for and what are the timings?

The show opened on Monday,  20 January and will run until Wednesday, 22 January 2020. Shows will be at 7pm each night and will run for 1 hour and 50 minutes (including interval).

• Parking is ample either around the public car parks close to The Regent, but do check the rules. Some parking lots might need you to pay even at night. We parked up at intu Potteries and that cost us £1 (its fixed rate after 6pm).
• The Regent also provides binoculars (usually located at the back of each seat) for £1.
• Programme Booklets are usually on sale for £5, full details of the show and cast members are featured on it.
• The Regent is a beautiful theatre with ornate decor and traditional seating. It has plenty of performances out throughout the year and lots of variety.

About Regent Theatre

The Regent Theatre is a theatre in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Constructed in 1929 as a cinema, it is one of several theatres in the city centre and one of two owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group. The building was converted for full-time use as a theatre in 1999, and since then has hosted a number of shows and musicals. The theatre is also the northern base for the Glyndebourne Touring Opera.

About Moscow City Ballet

The Moscow City Ballet was founded in 1988 by the distinguished Russian choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov, with the aim to promote the original ideas of the great 19th and 20th century Russian choreographers.  The birth of the company was a direct outcome of the sweeping changes in the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, where “Glastnost” and “Perestroyka” made the private enterprise legal again and Moscow City Ballet was the first privately owned ballet company in the USSR. Since 1988, Moscow City Ballet has appeared in Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Germany, Hong-Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jersey, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Netherlands, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Republic Korea, R.O.C. Taiwan, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America and, naturally, in Russia itself.  The company’s greatest success has been in the United Kingdom where it has given more than 1000 performances since 1991, accompanied by the Moscow City Ballet Orchestra.

Moscow City Ballet is one of Russia’s most successful and popular touring ballet companies, highly admired for its distinctive style, dramatic story‐telling, exciting choreography and exceptionally gifted dancers. I bet this is absolutely incredible to get to see live – especially with the Moscow ballet! There is something magical about The Nutcracker and if I was to go and see a ballet it would definitely be this one.

I would love to see this ballet but mistakenly thought it was being performed in March 2020. So disappointed to have missed it but hopefully it will return to the Regent Theatre sometime in the not too distant future!

They are touring around the UK Rota, so worth checking out their website to see where they are headed to next, not too sure if they will head back to The Regent Theatre this year.

During my recent stay at Novotel Moscow City from 9th to 22nd February, I was pleasantly surprised by the warm reception I received from the duty manager Marika. Her friendly demeanor and efficient handling of check-in made me feel welcome and valued as a guest as always. I also want to extend my appreciation to the night manager Maria for her attentiveness and quick response to any requests or concerns I had during my stay. Her professionalism and dedication to ensuring a comfortable experience for guests did not go unnoticed. The F&B Manager Darina and her associate Yulia deserves special recognition for their exceptional service and attention towards the incredible experience. I am extremely glad with the fact that how she is concerned with every details to make the valued guest feel exceptional during the stay. Lastly, I would like to express my deepest gratitude towards Deputy GM Marina for her overall management of the hotel. Her leadership and commitment to guest satisfaction were evident throughout my stay, and I truly felt well taken care of under her supervision.

Good location, near to a big mall ( 4 minutes of walk ) were everything you need is available.

1. Process of lamp light replacement should be managed more effectively. 2. It is too noisy in the inner rooms - noise from events (bad sound isolation) 3. All other aspects are on the good level.
