Surrounded by the majestic, snow-clad mountains of the Pir Panjal range, lush greenery and colourful fields, Patnitop, in Jammu and Kashmir, makes for a lovely getaway. It sits atop a plateau in the Shivalik belt and remains shrouded by a thick canopy of green pines and dense woods. Cut by the pristine Chenab river, Patnitop has mesmerising natural charms that leave you awed. It has a number of verdant valleys and vast, empty fields that are now being dedicated to camps, making camping one of the most coveted activities here. Travellers looking to engage their adventurous side can go trekking and hiking as well.

There is a charming legend associated with Patnitop. It is believed that a pond existed amidst the lush green pastures of the area, and the princess of the ruling kingdom used to bathe in it every day. Thus, the pond that was called 'Patan da Talab', or the Pond of the Princess, greatly influenced the name of the place. The hill station is also home to three freshwater springs whose cold water is believed to harbour medicinal properties.

Lying on the outskirts of Patnitop are the towns of Kud and Batote. Kud is popular for patissa, also known as soan papdi, while Batote is known for its high-quality kidney beans, known as rajma in Hindi. Situated almost 112 km from Jammu and 47 km from Udhampur, the hill station of Patnitop falls in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Patnitop is yet another hill station that fulfills your dream of living in the snowy slopes of the Alps. Situated near the river Chenab, this beautiful town offers a unique atmosphere of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas. Patnitop was earlier known as “Patan da Talab ”, meaning “Pond of the Princess”. It waas believed to be the bathing area for princesses. If you are a sports lover, this is the perfect location to enjoy sports like skiing and trekking.

Major Attractions

Finding beautiful plateau and dense forests at a height of 2024 m from the sea level is itself a great attraction to draw tourists from the world around. People love to visit the Chenab Basin , formed by the Chenab river and mountains. The place is covered with a thick layer of snow in winters. Chinar garden and saffron fields provide a picteresque view of divine natural beauty.

People can go skiing, paragliding, camping, walking and trekking at Patnitop. Sundarani-Jungal Gali-Jasarkote-Sanasar route in Jangal Gali area is the perfect route for trekking. Besides, a 9-hole golf course lures tourists to Patnitop in summers.

You can also visit the Sudh Mahadev , a holy place near Patnitop. Several other religious holy places near Patnitop are Naag Temple, Vaishno Devi Temple, Buddha Amarnath Temple, and Bahu Fort & Temple .

Food/Cuisine

You can find a number of restaurant/roadside dhabas serving a wide range of Indian food including traditional Kashmiri cuisine. A few Chinese food corners are found alongside fast food joints. Apart from this, a number of ice cream parlours do brisk business in summers.

Patnitop does not offer much to shop for. You can only find a few handicraft shops/stalls which are known for good quality Kashmiri handicraft items and traditional specialties like namdas (embroidered wool carpets), pherans (embroidered long shirts) and woolens.

The maximum temperature during summers rarely go above 18-20 degrees. Winters are cold, and the temperature can fall to 0 degrees. It is preferred to carry light woollens during rainy/autumn season.

Accommodation for youth and students is available in the Youth Hostel. The JKTDC’s luxury huts self contained timber cottages tucked away amidst pine trees provide an idyllic ambience for a quiet and memorable stay surrounded by sights and sounds of nature.

"Mini Gulmarg"

The most exciting feature of the beautiful resort of Sanasar (2079 meters), 19 Kms west of Patnitop, is a sprawling cup shaped meadow, 1 surrounded by gigantic conifers, which has been developed into a 9 – hole golf course. Besides enjoying exciting pony rides amongst the groves and other smaller meadow, one can also take treks up the surrounding hills from here. Sanasar is also ideal for paragliding, while Natha Top on way to Sanasar affords scenic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Patnitop is located in the Lower Himalayan Range close to the Pir Panjal range, 47 km from Udhampur and 112 km from Jammu.This famous hill resort is perched on a beautiful plateau, at an altitude of 2024 m across which the Jammu-Srinagar Highway passes. The towns of Kud and Batote are nearby. Kud is a very small town where sweet shops make fresh Patissa (a sweet). It may be bought hot and melts in one's mouth. Batote is known as a place for quality rajma or the kidney bean.

This is the position where it is considered that Devi Parvati, the goddess.

Sanasar (2079 m), a satellite resort of Patnitop, with a cup-shaped meadow surrounded by gigantic conifers. A place for a quiet holiday, the meadow has now been developed as a golf course.There are several walks in the surrounding hills. The resort itself is ideal for paragliding. Tourists with own vehicle can go on to Sansar from Patnitop and return by the evening.

Destination Toronto Names New CEO

Destination Toronto is sticking with someone who knows the organization inside and out.

Destination Toronto said Friday that Andrew Weir would become its president and CEO on May 1. Weir was the destination marketing organization’s executive vice president.

“Having conducted a thorough North American search, we are thrilled to announce Andrew Weir as Destination Toronto’s new President & CEO,” said Rekha Khote, chair of the board of directors at Destination Toronto . 

Weir replaces Scott Beck, who left to become CEO and President of San Francisco Travel in October.

As executive vice president, Weir led strategic partnerships between the tourism industry, broader business leadership, and government. Before that, he was Destination Toronto’s chief marketing officer.

Weir has also served on numerous boards in the tourism industry, including as chair of the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario.

He takes the executive top job as Toronto deals with the absence of Chinese tourists. China was one of Toronto’s top long haul international tourism source markets before the pandemic, former Destination Toronto CEO Scott Beck told Skift in February .

The Chinese government has banned group travel to Canada. The number of flights between China and Canada remains well below their pre-numbers, Destination Canada CEO and President Marsha Walden told Skift in an interview .

Weir will also lead Destination Toronto as the city prepares to host six matches for the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

Toronto welcomed nearly 9 million overnight visitors in 2023, generating more than $7 billion in visitor spending.
