Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is the quintessential Spring Break destination for so many reasons. It’s warm here in March and April with many days in the mid-70s . But it’s also one of the most inexpensive places for Spring Break .

So bring the whole family or meet up with a group of friends and enjoy some time on the beach, major relaxation, and a ton of nightlife.

Start at the beach and walk Myrtle Beach’s boardwalk , passing the ferris wheel, arcade, shops, and tons of great restaurants. You can stay entertained here all week. But don’t! There are so many more unique things to do in Myrtle Beach that you have to check out instead.

During April, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans minor league baseball team starts up their season . They have many activities for kids, but for adults, the specials are even better, like Thirsty Thursday and $2 Taco Tuesdays.

The best thing to do in the area is to drive south to the Marsh Walk at Murrells Inlet. This beautiful spot is loaded with amazing restaurants, live music, and animals to watch in the marsh. Visiting with a group of friends? Reserve a Brew Boat and pedal your way around the marsh drinking, listening to music, and watching the sunset.

While you’re in the area, pop into Brookgreen Gardens , it’s especially gorgeous in the spring with millions of flowers in bloom.

To be in the heart of the Spring Break action, stay at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club which has awesome pools and is steps from the boardwalk. Or, try renting a condo in Surfside Beach , just out of reach of the millions of tourists. For a more luxurious option, book a room at the Marriott Resort at Grande Dunes , just north of the city.

Miami, Florida

A top spot for spring breakers in the USA is Miami. Renowned for its world-famous beaches and colorful flair , Miami greets visitors with warm temperatures (in the mid-70s in March and high-70s in April) and a lot to do!

Most people will initially head to South Beach , where you’ll find the famous art deco hotels as well as soft white sand beaches . If you’re looking for a fantastic place to eat, check out Under the Mango Tree , a healthy eatery that specializes in vegan dishes, smoothie bowls, and more.

One of the best things to do in Miami , however, is to head to the Bahamas ! You can take a day trip to Bimini island where you will have a full day on the pristine beaches before coming back for a night of partying in Miami.

Wynwood is a famous place in Miami for those looking for art (the Wynwood Walls are a renowned spot), hip eateries, and some incredible coffee shops like Panther Coffee.

If you’re keen to explore the area, you can take a jet ski tour of Biscayne Bay , a day trip to the Everglades, or even head to Key West for a day. Miami is a place that has it all for Spring Break no matter what your travel style is!

Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks may not be your typical East Coast Spring Break destination, but it might surprise you (as long as you’re not planning to sunbathe and swim in the waters). With March highs in the upper-50s and April highs in the upper-60s, it is the perfect weather to go biking, hiking, and more.

Start your Outer Banks trip up in Corolla where you can head to the rugged beaches to see if the wild horses are hanging out near the water. You can not feed the horses as they are wild, but you can admire them from afar with the Atlantic in the backdrop.

Also, be sure to check out the South Virginia Dare Trail or Bay Drive (in Kill Devil Hills) where you can go walking or biking.

In Kitty Hawk, you can admire the Wright Brothers’ Memorial and, not too far away, is Jockey’s Ridge State Park. This North Carolina state park is home to the highest sand dune on the East Coast … and it is far too hot to visit in the summer months, making spring ideal!

If you’re looking for some history, check out Roanoke Island and learn more about the lost colony.

Alternatively, you can visit the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and walk through the trails or take a kayaking tour . This is the northernmost part of the US to see alligators in the wild! While they are not in large numbers there, this is the largest concentration of black bears on the East Coast , so you may get a glimpse of one when visiting.

For those looking for a delicious cup of coffee, Roots & Leaves Food Truck is located down in Avon and offers some of the best oat milk lattes you can get your hands on in the OBX.

The Outer Banks is more famous for its housing rentals and not its hotels and motels. These rentals will be far cheaper during the spring than in the summer months.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, SC, is the perfect destination for Spring Break due to its lovely weather, historic vibes, beaches, colorful houses, and green plantations. For all interests, there are many exciting things to do in Charleston, SC . 

The first thing is to spot Wisteria blooming all around. The streets are filled with scents of jasmine during spring as Charleston downtown is full of historic houses loaded with shrubs, trees, and ornamental plants . And also, Charleston hosts the Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens , which is a beautiful event to attend there (from March 15, 2023, to April 16, 2023). 

The most important thing to do is visit Rainbow row, Pineapple fountain, and The Battery for vibrant and historic vibes. For nature lovers, it would be great to visit Myrtle beach, Folly Beach, and Hilton Head nearby. The weather on beaches is perfect for water lovers.

Special concerts related to art, music, and brewery are held during spring, so it is an ideal time to enjoy all those events. Make sure to check the city’s event calendar .

You can also go on a day trip to visit some plantations like the Drayton House, the Magnolia plantations, and the Boone plantation and its stunning gardens.

Orlando, Florida

Orlando is famous for being home to Disney World and the Disney World Resort, but there are so many other things to enjoy on a Spring Break in Orlando as well. 

Orlando is home to both Disney World and Universal Studios which means that you can enjoy the magic of Disney and the magic of Harry Potter World on the same trip! If theme parks aren’t your thing then you can take a day trip out to one of the nearby beaches . Because Orlando is centrally located in Florida, both Tampa and Cocoa Beach are easy day trips from the city. 

If you are looking for a more active Spring Break, there are 19 natural springs near Orlando that are perfect for swimming, kayaking, and even diving ! The natural springs are home to both crystal clear water and many different species of natural wildlife such as manatees and alligators.

Brooklyn, New York

With its sprawling city parks, great foodie scene, and innovative museums, Brooklyn is a perfect artsy destination for a Spring Break getaway. 

This eclectic borough has a thriving art community, fun food trucks, and lots of green parks with breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. 

Head to Brooklyn Botanic Garden to unwind in the heart of the bustling city. This 52-acre garden boasts more than 14,000 taxa of plants, including stunning cherry trees that bloom in the spring . Don’t miss the Cherry Esplanade with its 200 vibrant cherry trees that are in full flower during Spring Break. 

For lunch, stroll over to Dumbo – a tiny neighborhood at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge that’s packed with trendy microbreweries and flea markets . Head to Westville for great bargain comfort food and some tempting vegetarian and vegan options. Sweetgreen is another great choice for fresh and delicious salads and hearty warm bowls.

Another fun thing to do is visit Anastasia State Park . The park is located just a short drive from downtown St. Augustine and offers visitors a chance to enjoy the Florida coastline . Some of the best places to visit in Savannah include Forsyth Park, the city market, the Owens-Thomas House, the Telfair Museum, and the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist – among many others.

If you want to spend some time at the beach, head to Tybee island for the day . Water temperature averages 66°F in April but can sometimes climb as high as 73°F.

You can also stop by the  Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson, the Meadow Garden, and the Historic Farm House of George Walton.

If you like museums, visit the  Augusta Museum of History to learn more about the city’s history, from the native Americans to the present days. You can also stop by the Morris Museum of Art or the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art.

When it comes to places to stay, if you don’t mind not staying downtown, you’ll find a couple of nice and really affordable options, like the Augusta Best Inn . For something with charm and character and well located, check out the Olde Town Inn . Otherwise, you’ll find plenty of beautiful vacation homes available around town.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is one of the best Spring Break destinations on the East Coast , especially for people who want to spend time outdoors. Spring is an ideal time to visit as the temperatures are just right and you have a plethora of options when it comes to outdoor activities.

Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway , stop along the way for short hikes and don’t miss the many overlooks with gorgeous views of the mountains . You can also head to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park where you can hike surrounded by thousands of blooming wildflowers .

You’ll find hundreds of miles of hiking trails around Asheville , from easy strolls to arduous day hikes. You can hike at Mt. Mitchell State Park to the highest mountain peak in the Eastern US.

There are plenty of other outdoor activities to be had this time of the year, you can go mountain biking, kayaking, white water rafting , ziplining, swimming, stand-up paddling…

In town, explore Asheville’s walkable downtown area where you’ll find independent shops, craft breweries, and some of the best dining options in the southeast. Don’t miss the street performances , go on a hop-on-hop-off  trolley tour , and take a stroll through the Urban Trail.

Another must-see in Asheville is the Biltmore Estate and its gardens. Tour this iconic mansion, the largest privately owned house in the United States, from the 19th century, then stroll around Biltmore Village.

If looking for a place to stay, the  Hotel Indigo Asheville Downtown , in the heart of the River Arts District, is a good option. If you don’t want to stay in the city, but still be near everything, consider the well-rated  North Lodge on Oakland Bed and Breakfast  or the  Reynolds Mansion.

Williamsburg, Virginia

The main draw is Colonial Williamsburg , an open-air museum where you can learn about life in the 18th century and partake in daily activities from the past , with crafts demonstrations and actors dressed in traditional clothing. It’s the largest living history museum in the US and everyone stays in character 24/7.

Visit nearby  Historic   Jamestowne , where the original colony was, and don’t miss the museum on  Virginian and Native American culture , the fort, the recreated  Powhatan Indian Village , and the ships’ replicas.

Visit the battlefield where the British surrendered in   Yorktown and the museum with its interactive exhibits, films, and outdoor living history.

If you like outdoor activities, spring is the perfect time to visit, you’ll find many hiking and biking trails nearby as well as places for water activities . You can bike the 52-mile path connecting Jamestown to Richmond , spend some time at the beach at Yorktown or Jamestown , or hike at one of the many nearby parks.

Damascus, Virginia

Located along the Appalachian Trail, Damascus is a small town in Virginia’s high country, surrounded by stunning scenery. It’s an ideal Spring Break destination if you like the outdoors . The town is known as Trail Town USA, as seven well-known trails pass by Damascus , making it an ideal vacation spot for hiking and biking.

Bike along the 34-mile Virginia Creeper Trail , passing through dense forests, open meadows, and streams. Hike part of the Appalachian Trail or kayak at Whitetop Laurel Creek . You’ll find plenty of outdoor recreation options around town.

For something more relaxed, drive the 60-mile Mount Rogers Scenic Byway .

In town, shop at the many handicraft and antique stores before stopping by the Damascus Brewery for lunch and a cold beer.

You won’t find many hotels in town, so consider booking a vacation rental . Otherwise, you can book a room at the cozy Millsap-Baker Estate set in a historic house.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Located close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg is a great Spring Break destination for outdoor lovers. Spring is the best time to visit as temperatures are still moderate and everything is blooming everywhere.

Gatlinburg is an awesome vacation spot for families as you’ll find many amusement parks there and kid-friendly museums and attractions . Don’t miss Dollywood and Anakeesta!

There’s also plenty of outdoor fun to be had at any age . During spring you can go hiking, biking, ziplining, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, but also plan a road trip for something more relaxing.

In town, don’t miss the Gatlinburg SkyLift Park to reach stunning views over the mountains. For something quite unique, tour the Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum , then head to Ole Smoky Moonshine where you can take a tour and sample some rustic corn whiskey.

When it comes to places to stay, you’ll find many cabins and cottages available for rent . If you’d rather stay at a hotel, check out the Greystone Lodge on the River with free breakfast, a great location, a pool, and family rooms.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

If you are looking to spend your Spring Break at a peaceful beach destination , then Rehoboth Beach in Delaware is a great option. Most businesses will be open and it won’t attract large crowds like other popular Spring Break beach destinations.

Spend some time strolling on the beac h, go for a swim if you’re brave enough, enjoy the food scene, and take day trips to explore the coast.

You can take a ferry ride over to Cape May for a day trip. Make sure to book ahead and leave early as the ferries don’t run as late as during summer.

You’ll also find a couple of nice trails to go hiking or biking . Check out the Thompson Island Trailhead, the Junction & Breakwater Trailhead , and Burton Island Trailhead . You can also spend some time exploring the Delaware Seashore State Park where you can hike and kayak.

If you want to stay right by the beach, book a room at the beachfront Boardwalk Plaza Hotel with a restaurant, free private parking, a fitness center, and a bar. You can also check out the vacation rentals , you’ll find great deals this time of year.

Woodstock, Vermont

Nestled in the heart of Vermont, surrounded by peaceful scenery, Woodstock makes for a convenient Spring Break destination close to Boston and New York. Spend some time outdoors, stroll through the historic district, and take the time to relax.

In town, take the time to visit the historic district spread across Central Street and Elm Street, stop by some of the cute stores, and gaze at the grand Georgian, Federal Style, and Greek Revival houses.

If you like cheese, head to Quechee Gorge Village to sample some local cheese or visit   Sugarbush Farm for some maple syrup tasting. Another thing Vermont is known for is beer, you can head to the   Long Trail Brewery to sample some local brews.

If you want to go hiking, head to Quechee State Park , hike to the top of Mount Tom, or visit the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park.

The Woodstock Inn & Resort is one of the places to stay in town, close to the historic district and with great amenities. You’ll also find plenty of nice vacation rentals , either in town, or a bit farther out if you want something more secluded, surrounded by nature.

Portland, Maine

Portland will make a perfect off-beat Spring Break destination for people who want to avoid the crowds and prefer milder temperatures . In the spring, temperatures average between 45 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, which is ideal for hiking and biking. Always wear layers, so you’re ready for any temperature changes.

You can drive along the coast , stopping along the way to visit a few lighthouses (don’t miss the famous Portland Head Light and Bug Light ) and take in the scenery.

Spring is also a good time to take a boat cruise , the Minkie whales, Atlantic porpoises, harbor seals, and native seabirds are often spotted this time of year. You can also take a day trip to some of the neighboring islands.

Walk around town stopping by art galleries and sampling some local food, you can also take a guided walking tour to learn more about Portland’s history. There’s a beautiful walking trail along the harbor’s edge , leading to the historic Narrow Gauge Railroad from where you can ride a train along the stunning Casco Bay.

Foodies will love going on a food tour , you can even go on a donut food tour if you have a sweet tooth! Art lovers can tour the Portland Museum of Art featuring American, European, and contemporary art pieces as well as pieces from local artists.

If you like hiking and biking , you’ll find plenty of trails that start from Portland or nearby. Popular trails include the ones at Fore River Sanctuary, Presumpscot River Preserve, and Robinson Woods Preserve . If you want to try to spot wildlife, head to Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park and Mackworth Island State Park.

You’ll find plenty of charming inns and bed and breakfasts around town as well as a couple of chain hotels. The Canopy By Hilton Portland Waterfront is well-rated and conveniently located with some rooms offering waterfront views. For something more intimate, the West End Inn is a great option, especially for couples.

Alternatively, you can rent a vacation home either in town or a bit further out on the coast for something more secluded.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

Spring is a gorgeous time to visit Plymouth and you’ll avoid the summer crowds. It’s ideal if you don’t mind the mild weather and not being able to enjoy the beaches fully. You’ll find plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy as well as many historic sights you can visit.

The highlight of a trip to Plymouth is touring the Plimoth Plantation and the many historic buildings and museums around town. The Plimoth Plantation is a replica of the original historic settlement depicting the 17th-century Plymouth Colony.

Jabez Howland House , built in 1667, is also worth seeing, tours are only available during summer, but you can see the house from outside. You can also check out the Jenney Museum and see about the pilgrim-focused tour they offer. The Mayflower Society House – a historic 18th-century home is also a must-visit, it’s now closed for renovation (but might be open by Spring Break). Their Colonial Revival Garden is worth a stroll as well.

Don’t miss the iconic National Monument to the Forefathers and the Pilgrim Hall Museum (opens on April 1ft). There are plenty of other historic houses and buildings worth checking out around town, it’s a good idea to take a guided tour to discover all about them.

Outdoor lovers will enjoy taking a cruise to explore the coast from the ocean and maybe spot some wildlife. For hiking trails, head to Myles Standish State Forest, Massasoit State Park, Ellisville Harbor State Park , or stroll around Brewster Gardens . If the weather is nice, you can also visit some of the beaches in the area.

It might sound like a no-brainer, but Miami is queen when it comes to East Coast spring getaways. A spring break hub, the city has way more to see and do than just chugging tropical drinks on Ocean Drive (though, a night of that is always fun, too). These days, Miami’s grown-up side makes it an equally awesome spring getaway for families, couples, and singles who aren’t just fresh out of college. We love the slightly more refined hotel-and-pool scene along Collins Avenue north of Lincoln Road in South Beach. But you should also make time to head inland. We’ve traveled to many of these East Coast spring break destinations. Sometimes we spent a long weekend. Other times, a full week. They all offer fun for families and won’t necessarily break the bank.

Spring Break Destinations on the East Coast

1. st. petersburg, fl.

St. Petersburg in Florida is the perfect spring break destination for families! With something for everyone, this town has it all: beaches, kayaking, and boat tours for outdoor lovers.

There are also plenty of museums and shopping for those looking to spend some time inside. And St. Petersburg is close to Tampa, giving visitors even more fun options like ZooTampa , Busch Gardens , and the aquarium.

Baseball lovers will especially enjoy this area for spring break, as many Major League Baseball teams complete their spring training near St. Petersburg. Fans can easily catch a Yankees, Phillies, or Blue Jays game within a short drive from town.

In particular, Key West is an exceptionally great spring break destination on the East Coast. You can start your visit with a trip to the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. Not only can you enjoy stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico, but you can snorkel right from the beach.

Just don’t leave without experiencing the area’s vibrant nightlife scene. Just head to Duval Street and check out bars like Flying Monkeys, The Rum Bar, and Sloppy Joe’s. They are easily some of the  best bars in Key West.

There is also plenty for families between Key Largo and Key West. Some of the best family-friendly attractions in Islamorada. Feeding the tarpon at Robbie’s has become a standard activity on the Keys. And the Theater of the Sea is a fun place to see and learn about rescued marine animals.

6. Philadelphia, PA

8. Washington, DC

There is a lot to do surrounding Washington, DC as well, like visiting Arlington Cemetery or George Washington’s estate,  Mount Vernon . There is also a lot to do and see in Alexandria, Virginia , which is only a 20-minute Metro ride away from DC.

At NASA, you can see rockets, go on tours, play in a massive space-themed indoor playground, and try astronaut ice cream. You may even be lucky enough to catch a rocket launch, a much more frequent occurrence now with SpaceX.  

There are beautiful beaches all along the coast. For the buzz of Spring Break, hit Cocoa Beach, or for a chiller atmosphere, head south of Cocoa.

In Cocoa, you could easily spend a whole afternoon in the massive Ron Jon’s Surf Shop. For more family-friendly activities, you could also spend a day at the Brevard Zoo or paddle boarding and kayaking on the many canals off the rivers and explore islands like Samson Island.

Not officially on the east coast, but we’re sliding in New Orleans as a great option if you’re looking for a good time spring break. Live music, delicious food, and living history fill the streets, making it a great family getaway destination. 

Weather-wise, March and April are great months to visit New Orleans. With an average high temperature of 76° F, it’s the perfect weather to explore The Big Easy on foot. Travelers won’t have to worry too much about rain, and springtime falls outside the hurricane season as well.

There are so many amazing  things to do with kids in New Orleans . Young families traveling to New Orleans will love spending time in City Park. More than just play areas and greenery, you can enjoy a small amusement park, miniature golf, pedal boating, and so much more! Consider purchasing as Go City Pass to enjoy them all.

Families with older children will love the culture and history of the city. Whether you spend time exploring the French Quarter and the Garden District, taking a history lesson at the WWII Museum, enjoying some live music, or taking a river cruise,

14. Hilton Head Island, SC

Hilton Head Island is one of the Southeast’s top family-friendly beach destinations in the Atlantic. The island is open and operating year-round (unlike other beach towns), so visitors can experience all that it has to offer in early Spring without all of the traffic that comes during the Summer. 

Hilton Head offers access to historical sites, fun tourist activities for families with kids of any age, and beaches with private and public access points. 

Beaches on Hilton Head Island are known to be the busiest from Memorial Day through Labor Day, which makes March and April the perfect time to schedule a relaxing beach trip. Some of the best things to do in Hilton Head are actually not on the beach, though. 15. Portland, ME

Savannah, Georgia, is a year-round location. However, it is particularly splendid to visit during spring.

Firstly, the weather is warm and comfortable to walk around in. The temperatures usually range from 60°F to 70°F.

Secondly, the entire area becomes gorgeous during spring. Gorgeous azalea flowers start to bloom at iconic attractions such as Forsyth Park and Bonaventure Cemetery.

As for activities, you will have so much to do. You can take a riverboat cruise to various landmarks. The Cathedral Basilica of Saint John The Baptist is also definitely worth adding to your  Savannah itinerary . There are also plenty of family-friendly museums where you can learn more about Savannah’s history.

You can also consider taking a beach trip to Tybee Island, which is less than an hour away.

Finally, if you’re visiting during Saint Patrick’s Day, you can also take part in their annual Saint Patrick’s parade, which is such a fun way to bring the locals and tourists together!

For more spring break fun, one of the best things to do is to spot manatees, a large marine mammal that migrates from the chilly waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean to the warm waters of Florida’s springs from November through March.

There’s a manatee hotspot in Tampa itself by the Tampa Electric Co. (they love the warm water that the plant discharges!), which has its own wooden platform overlooking the water.

Alternatively, for a more up close and personal experience, consider heading about an hour north to Crystal River, which is one of the best  places to snorkel in Florida  with the manatees!

For a different kind of adventure, consider a stop at  Busch Gardens , a family-friendly theme park. It offers everything from water rides to classics, like bumper cars and a merry-go-round to an eye-popping ten rollercoasters—plus it’s a lot more affordable than some of its neighboring theme parks in Florida!

19. New Jersey

New Jersey is one of the most overlooked spring destinations in the United States!

With all of  New Jersey’s flower farms and gardens , there’s a reason why it’s called the Garden State! During springtime, you can find parks filled with beautiful cherry blossoms, Dutch-style tulip fields, stunning rose gardens, and lavender fields later in the season.

New Jersey is a diverse state that has it all with a beautiful coastline to enjoy during the summer months, mountains with woodland trails that illuminate in golden colors during autumn, a ski mountain to visit in the winter, and flower farms, gardens, wineries, and incredible restaurants to experience during springtime.

There’s an ongoing argument about whether Central Jersey exists. Yes, there’s North Jersey and South Jersey, but a sliver of magical land splits the state where you can experience the highlight of spring activities. This area is considered Central Jersey!

Some of the top things to do in Central Jersey during a spring break trip are to visit Holland Ridge Farms in Cream Ridge, NJ, for tulip picking; take a cooking class at Ninety Acres at Natirar in Peapack-Gladstone; or bike ride around the gardens, waterfalls, and woodland trails at Duke Farms in Hillsborough.

The closest airport to fly into to experience all of New Jersey’s best springtime activities is Newark Liberty International Airport. When you land in Newark, NJ, you must also visit Branch Brook Park to see the incredible cherry blossoms!

20. Miami, FL

Miami, Florida , is a great spring break destination for the entire family! The main attraction is the beach, which can be enjoyed all day long. Staying at a hotel or resort with direct beach access is ideal for families.

These resorts often have large pools on premises, with restaurants and cafes. I recommend mid-beach or north beach, as they’re quieter and more family-friendly.

Additionally, families can enjoy water activities like boats, paddleboards, kayaks, and jet skis. Active families will enjoy biking along the waterfront promenade. You can bike down to South Beach and watch the sunset at South Pointe Park.

For the more adventurous, take a day trip to Everglades National Park to see huge alligators and other interesting wildlife. If not looking to venture too far, Jungle Island is a great option, as it has animal interaction experiences and exhibits for all to enjoy, right in the heart of the city.

In case of a rainy day, the Frost Science Museum is a great indoor option.

Located just one hour and 30 minutes or 80 miles from Denver, Breckenridge is one of the most popular ski resorts in the country. With over 2,908 acres of ski terrain, this is one of the country’s best places to ski or snowboard.

Breckenridge is an ideal place to go skiing in March. Due to the town’s high altitude (9,600ft), the snow conditions typically remain great throughout the month. As temperatures slowly start to get warmer, the number of bluebird (sunny) days increases.

The annual eight-day South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festival arrives at the Austin Convention Center on March 8, with technology, culture, film, music, comedy, and notable speakers. Spring is a gorgeous time for skiing in Park City , with snow throughout March (and even later some years). Conveniently located less than an hour from Salt Lake City International Airport, the charming downtown is almost as much of a draw as the snowy slopes. On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

See the full list of past total solar eclipses in the U.S. since 1778

A  rare total solar eclipse was visible in parts of the United States Monday. Those in the path of totality  had the opportunity to see the sun be fully covered by the moon for several minutes.

Total solar eclipses are rare , and aren't often visible from the U.S. The last time one occurred here  was in 2017 , and the U.S. won't see another until 2044 .

Here's a list of all the times a total solar eclipse has been recorded in the United States. 

Total solar eclipse in the U.S. during the 18th century

The first recorded total solar eclipse was in 1778, according to NASA , just a few short years after the United States became an independent country. The eclipse was visible from the Carolinas to New England, and was noted by historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, according to Mount Vernon , the museum established in former President George Washington's estate. Troops in Washington's army also noted the event. 

List of total solar eclipses in the U.S. during the 19th century

1806: The first total solar eclipse of the 1800s occurred in 1806, according to the National Parks Service . The path of that eclipse would have crossed from Arizona, through the Midwest and into New England, according to NASA . 

1869: The next total solar eclipse was recorded in 1869. The path of totality stretched from Alaska to the Carolinas, according to NASA . Photos of the event were published in Harper's Magazine, the service said, the first mass publication to do so. 

1878: The next total solar eclipse occurred in 1878, and the path of totality arced from Alaska through Louisiana, according to NASA . It was studied by an all-woman team of astronomers, according to the parks service, and Thomas Edison himself traveled to see the event, bringing scientific equipment to study the sun's corona during the eclipse. 

List of total solar eclipses in the U.S. during the 20th century

1900: The first eclipse of the 20th century was in 1900, according to the parks service. The path of totality of that eclipse brought it over Wadesboro, North Carolina.

1918: In June 1918, a total solar eclipse was visible from Washington to Florida, according to the parks service. It was the last time a total solar eclipse would be visible across the entire continent for nearly 100 years. 

1925: This was followed by another total solar eclipse in January 1925, which was visible from Minnesota through New England, according to NASA . 

1932: In August 1932, another total solar eclipse was visible in North America. The path of totality for this eclipse was mostly in Canada, according to NASA , but was visible in northern New England including parts of Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. 

1963: The next total solar eclipse in the U.S. wasn't until July 1963. This eclipse was visible in Alaska and parts of northern New England, according to NASA . 

1970: In March 1970, another total solar eclipse was visible from the coast of the Southwest United States. Watch CBS News coverage of that event in the video below:

1979: The last eclipse that NASA recorded in the 20th century took place in 1979. This eclipse was visible in the Pacific Northwest and parts of Idaho and the Dakotas, but the path of totality mostly arced through Canada. 

Total solar eclipses in the U.S. during the 21st century so far

Only two total solar eclipses have been visible from the United States during the 21st century. The first was the total solar eclipse of 2017 , which was visible across the country . This was the first time such an event had occurred since 1918, and millions gathered to watch . 

The April 8, 2024, eclipse was the next total solar eclipse visible in the U.S. The path of totality for this eclipse stretched from Texas to the Northeast. The eclipse started  on Mexico's Pacific coast at just after 11 a.m. PDT before traveling across the U.S. and into Canada. The eclipse left North America around 5:19 p.m. EDT. 

The eclipse attracted millions of spectators. Some areas where the event was most visible declared local states of emergency to account for the number of expected visitors. 

When will the next total solar eclipse be visible in the U.S.?

After the April 8 eclipse, the U.S. won't see another total solar eclipse for decades. The next total solar eclipse visible from the United States will occur in August 2044. 

Total solar eclipses typically happen every one to three years somewhere around the globe, but the events are often only visible from Earth's poles or from the middle of the ocean.

If you can brave cooler temperatures and the occasional rain shower, you'll likely be rewarded with fewer crowds and lower travel rates in many popular destinations, ranging from palm-fringed beaches to cities big and small. U.S. News considered factors like affordability, things to do, must-visit attractions, overall appeal and more to determine the best places to visit in March. Visiting during Barcelona's shoulder season has its perks, including smaller crowds and lower rates on airfare and accommodations. Plus, average temperatures hover near the low 60s in March, so you won't overheat while exploring must-see sights such as Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) and Park Güell, a whimsical park designed by Antoni Gaudí. What's more, you can explore other popular Gaudí landmarks like Casa Batlló and Basílica de la Sagrada Família without hordes of tourists blocking your view. When you've worked up an appetite, venture to the quiet Gràcia neighborhood to sample authentic Catalan cuisine on a food tour.

Straddling the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu Falls is one of the largest waterfall systems in the world. While the natural beauty of the falls will take your breath away year-round, travelers who plan a trip in March enjoy the added bonus of fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures and cheaper accommodations. Remember to set aside time in your schedule for Iguazu's most dramatic feature, Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), a semicircular chasm fed by 14 of Iguazu's waterfalls.

Although March falls within Maui's peak season, its excellent weather (think: average daytime temps in the high 70s and low 80s) and prime conditions for water sports and wildlife viewing make it a superb time to visit. Experienced surfers can head to popular surf spots like Ho'okipa Beach and Pe'ahi (dubbed "Jaws") to hang ten, while beginners stick to the waves at Kaanapali Beach. Meanwhile, animal lovers can look for migrating humpback whales during a whale watching cruise. To save some coin, book your Maui hotel and airfare at least a few months in advance.

These five towns on the Italian Riviera are beautiful any time of year, but there are a few benefits to visiting in March. The cooler weather (think: average temperatures sit in the high 50s) makes it a perfect time to hike Cinque Terre's famous trails, although rain may cause some of the trails to close at times. Additionally, many local shops reopen after closing for winter. Since spring is one of Cinque Terre's shoulder seasons, you'll find fewer tourists this time of year, allowing you to comfortably explore the area on foot or by boat.

March marks the end of Cape Town, South Africa's busy summer season, when temperatures begin to drop and crowds thin out. Tourists who plan a March vacation will be rewarded with cheaper rates and pleasant temps in the mid-70s, perfect for exploring top sights like Table Mountain and Camps Bay Beach. Plus, fall kicks off Cape Town's wine harvest, which makes it a great time to explore the world-renowned Constantia Valley wine region . Many festivals and events are also held throughout the month, including the Cape Town Carnival.

Situated between two of Utah 's five main national parks, Moab is an outdoor adventure hub known for its awe-inspiring red rock formations. Travelers can admire them during visits to Arches National Park (where the world's densest concentration of natural sandstone arches resides) and Canyonlands National Park (which is the largest national park in the state). Travelers who time their trip for the beginning of the month will have the best chance of avoiding crowds while still enjoying comfortable weather in the 50s and 60s. Other must-do March activities include hiking, rock climbing, off-roading and camping.

Whether you're enjoying a show at the Vancouver International Dance Festival or admiring cherry blossoms in Queen Elizabeth Park, there are plenty of reasons to visit Vancouver in March. Spend your time on a walking or biking tour of popular neighborhoods like Granville Island and Yaletown, then ride the Skyride gondola to the top of Grouse Mountain for breathtaking views of the city. March temperatures in this Canadian vacation destination are mild in the low 50s, and although you'll likely experience some rainfall, this is a great time to score big on hotel deals.

The reasons for traveling to this German city in March are multifold. Although you'll have to deal with some chilly weather (average temperatures sit in the high 40s), visiting during this shoulder season means fewer crowds and lower prices. March also brings the city's annual Starkbierfest event, a traditional Bavarian beer festival, and St. Patrick's Day, one of the largest cultural events in Munich. When you're not engaging in the festivities, spend the rest of your time sightseeing at famous attractions like St. Peter's Church and the Munich Residenz, the largest city palace in Germany.

While you can spot wildlife in the Galápagos year-round, March is nesting season for animals like green sea turtles, iguanas and red-footed boobies. Keep an eye out near the water, too, as sea lions are known to hang on the beaches. And though March falls within the wet season (you'll want to bring an umbrella), there should still be ample warm, sunny days to enjoy the beach, particularly toward the end of the month.

Boasting 150-plus miles of hiking trails, Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas appeals to travelers with an affinity for the outdoors. Observe wildlife (including more than 450 species of birds), kayak along the Rio Grande or explore Big Bend while horseback riding. Keep in mind that spring is the park's busiest season, so you won't be the only one admiring the spectacular mountain views. Plan accordingly by allotting extra time for waiting in lines and booking your trip accommodations far in advance.  

One of Cozumel, Mexico's biggest draws is its abundance of aquatic activities. The country's largest Caribbean island is one of the best places to scuba dive thanks to its clear water and proximity to the world's second-largest barrier reef. To get in the water, head to Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park to dive, snorkel or swim with dolphins. If you'd rather stay dry, sign up for a glass-bottom boat tour or lounge on one of the island's white sand beaches. Because March is outside the Atlantic hurricane season, you'll enjoy plenty of warm, dry weather.

While the northern half of the world is entering spring, Southern Hemisphere destinations like Sydney are just beginning their fall season. This means travelers will encounter pleasant weather in March (average temperatures hover in the high 70s) that is perfect for taking in some of Sydney's most iconic landmarks, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Other must-do activities include surfing and sunbathing at Bondi Beach and strolling through the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, Australia's oldest botanical garden.

Visit Punta Mita, Mexico, in March if you want to relax while on vacation. This former fishing village in western Mexico's Riviera Nayarit area is now renowned for its opulent resorts, world-class golf courses and beautiful white sand beaches. Punta Mita's warm weather and clear blue water also make it an excellent place to go scuba diving, surfing and Jet Skiing. What's more, March is one of several months when humpback whales migrate through the region, so you'll want to save time for a whale watching excursion.

March falls within this Laotian city's dry season, meaning you can participate in top outdoor activities like climbing Mount Phousi and taking a boat tour to the Pak Ou Caves without the threat of rain. Plus, the warm weather in the 80s and 90s makes cooling off in the turquoise waters of Kuang Si Falls even more enjoyable. No trip to Luang Prabang would be complete without exploring some of the city's ancient Buddhist temples – Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Wisunarat are two can't-miss sites.  

Although March ushers in some of Jamaica's lowest temps, this time of year is by no means cold. Daytime highs comfortably sit in the mid-80s in March, making Jamaica an appealing destination to spring breakers and those in search of a warm-weather holiday. Vacationers can climb to the top of Dunn's River Falls or hike through Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park. Those looking for a more relaxing getaway can lounge on a variety of white sand beaches or unwind at one of the island's luxurious all-inclusive resorts .

Where to See the Solar Eclipse: The 15 Best Cities to Watch the Event

If you’re a fan of astronomy or otherwise interested in unique natural phenomenons, you may be wondering where to see the solar eclipse today—or if the big event will be visible from your home. Today, a number of cities throughout Mexico , the United States, and Canada will experience brief moments of dawn- or dusk-like darkness right in the middle of the day. Officially described as a total solar eclipse, the occurrence happens when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and blocks the entirety of sun’s face.

Because it’s not something that happens everyday, the marvel has been prompting locals and travelers alike to scope out the best viewing locations, but fear not if you don’t have your spot figured out yet. Todays’s eclipse will travel along a wide, densely populated path. NASA estimated that 31.6 million people live in an area that will see the total solar eclipse and another 150 million are within 200 miles of it. What’s more, there won’t be another total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044, according to NASA , making it all the more important to catch this one.

For most of the United States, the eclipse won’t happen until the afternoon, meaning there’s still time to figure out how you’ll watch it. Here, AD covers everything you need to know about the upcoming event, including the 13 best cities to see the eclipse.

What is a total solar eclipse?

There are a number of different types of eclipses, which offer different views of either the sun or moon. As NASA explains it, “A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some areas.” A total solar eclipse means the moon will completely block the sun’s face, and if you’re in the path of the eclipse, you’ll be able to see the sun’s corona and outer atmosphere, weather permitting. Other types of eclipses, like a partial solar eclipse, occur when the moon covers only some of the sun, resulting in a crescent shape.

How do you safely watch the total solar eclipse?

Not only are solar eclipses special because of their relative rarity, they’re unique in how they’re watched. For the few minutes when the moon is fully blocking the sun—know as totality—viewers can look directly at the sun without any eye protection. Any other time, including the hours before and after totality when you’ll see a partial eclipse, it’s important to wear protective eye gear, such as solar eclipse glasses. “As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the sun,” NASA explains.

How often do solar eclipses happen?

Solar eclipses, of one kind or another, happen between two and five times a year. Total eclipses happen about once every 18 months. However, this doesn’t mean one will be visible from your home this often. According to the Natural History Museum, London , a total solar eclipse is viewable from any one place about once every 400 years. For example, the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States happened in 2017 and followed a track from Oregon towards South Carolina. This year, the solar eclipse’s path will start in Texas and move northeast towards Maine. The next total solar eclipse will happen in 2026 and will be visible from the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain.

How long will the 2024 solar eclipse last?

Total solar eclipses can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. The difference in totality length has to do with how far apart the sun, moon, and Earth are at any given time, since the latter two bodies both orbit in elliptical paths.

When the Earth is furthest from the sun—making the star appear smaller—and the moon is closest to the Earth—which makes the moon look big—totality can last for over seven minutes. As Astronomy Mag reports, these circumstances will line up in about 160 years, when a solar eclipse on July 16, 2186, will see almost seven-and-a-half minutes of totality. On the other extreme, if the Earth is at its closest point to the sun and the moon is at its furthest point from Earth, humans won’t see a total solar eclipse, even if all of the celestial bodies are in line. Since totality is all about the perspective of the viewer, this is also why each city will experience the 2024 eclipse differently.

This year, totality will last for a little over four minutes in some areas, which is significantly more than the two minutes that people experienced during the 2017 eclipse. As NASA notes, “During the 2017 total solar eclipse, the moon was a little bit farther away from Earth than it will be during the upcoming total solar eclipse, causing the path of that eclipse to be a little skinnier.” Seven years ago, the path of totality—which shows which parts of the world will be able to see the total solar eclipse—was only about 62 to 71 miles wide. This year, that path ranges from 108 to 122 miles wide. “Meaning at any given moment this eclipse covers more ground,” NASA explains.

How to read maps showing the 2024 solar eclipse

As noted, this year’s path of totality is about 110 miles wide. Cities closer to the center of the path will sustain total darkness longer than those on the edges. In addition to longer totality than in 2017, this year’s path of totality covers more densely populated areas than the previous one. This means more people should be able to experience the total solar eclipse.

Any part of the country that is not within the path may see a partial eclipse, and the closer a location is to the strip, the smaller the crescent of visible sun will be. In these locations, it won’t be safe to look directly at the eclipse without protective glasses or a viewing device. NASA has put together an interactive map , which allows viewers to see the eclipse timing in their city.

Where to see the solar eclipse

According to NASA , cities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will experience the total solar eclipse. Parts of Mexico and Canada will also fall within the eclipse’s path. Read on for the best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse.

Mazatlán, Mexico

Mexico’s pacific coast will be the first place in continental North America to experience the eclipse. Mazatlán, a popular resort city, is an ideal location to see the occurrence, as it is directly in the eclipse’s path. Totality will begin around 11:07 a.m. local time and last for 4 minutes and 17 seconds. Because it’s such an optimal place to see the 2024 solar eclipse, NASA is hosting a viewing event at Vidanta Mazatlán . Here, visitors will be able to watch screens showing telescope views of the eclipse in addition to other hands-on activities, such as projects for kids and touchable moon rocks.

Torreón, Mexico

Located more centrally in the country, the solar eclipse will also be visible from Torreón. Totality will start just before 12:19 p.m. local time and last for 4 minutes and 12 seconds. A partial eclipse will also be visible before and after totality, starting at 11:44 a.m. and ending at 1:54 p.m.

Texas Hill Country

Part of Texas Hill Country, Kerrville is a prime location to watch the 2024 eclipse. Near the Mexican border, it will be among the first US cities to experience totality, which will begin at 1:32 p.m. and last for almost four and a half minutes. Austin and Dallas are also in the path of totality, but will only experience the darkness for about two minutes and a little under four minutes, respectively. NASA is also hosting an event here, which will take place in Louise Hays Park and include live music, speakers, and programming for kids.

Dallas, Texas

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is among the most densely populated places from which the eclipse will be visible. Totality will last for 3 minutes and 51 seconds and begin at 1:40 p.m. The city has put together a list of ideal places within the city to watch the event, including the Dallas Zoo, Dallas Museum of Art, and White Rock Lake Park.

Russellville, Arkansas

Russellville, about 85 miles east of Little Rock, will experience 4 minutes and 12 seconds of totality, starting at 1:50 p.m. The city has planned a number of exciting programming for the historic event, including a solar eclipse festival and a concert with Grammy-winner Rhonda Vincent.

Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Located along the Mississippi River, Cape Girardeau is one of the best places in Missouri to watch the 2024 solar eclipse. According to NASA’s map, totality will last for a little over four minutes, beginning at 1:58 p.m. Head to Old Town Cape, where the city is hosting a block party on the day.

Carbondale, Illinois

Informally known as Little Egypt—possibly because the area delivered grains to northern parts of the state during the 1800s famine or because the southern tip of Illinois is similar to the Nile delta region in Egypt—Carbondale will experience 4 minutes and 10 seconds of totality, beginning at 1:59 p.m. The city also experienced totality during the 2017 eclipse, though it will see a longer dark period this time around. Home of Southern Illinois University, the school is hosting public viewing at its football stadium.

Bloomington, Indiana

Much of central and southern Indiana will experience totality during the 2024 solar eclipse, but Bloomington, largely a college town and home to Indiana University, will be among the best places in the Hoosier state to watch the event, since totality will last for about four minutes. The town is home to Indiana University, which is among our list of the most beautiful college campuses in America. Spend the afternoon strolling through the campus’s Gothic- and Romanesque-inspired buildings, and then catch the eclipse at 3 p.m.

Indianapolis, Indiana

They don’t call Indianapolis the crossroads of America for no reason: The state capital is at the intersection of four major US highways, Interstate 65, Interstate 69, Interstate 70, and Interstate 74. This means it’s a relatively accessible location for those in surrounding areas and among the best places to travel to for the solar eclipse. Here, totality will last for about 3 minutes and 47 seconds and start at 3:06 p.m. NASA is hosting an event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and will have experts on-hand to answer all questions about the eclipse. The city has also suggested White River State Park as an ideal solar eclipse viewing location, where a number of food trucks, local vendors, and other activations will be set up.

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland won’t be in a solar eclipse’s path of totality again until 2444 , making it a once in a lifetime experience for any locals hoping to watch the eclipse from their hometown. The city will experience maximum darkness at 3:15 p.m., which will last for just under 4 minutes. To commemorate the moment, the Great Lake Science Center is hosting a Total Eclipse Fest on April 6 through April 8. The free outdoor event will include speakers, concerts, performances, and hands-on science activities.

Erie, Pennsylvania

Only a small portion of northern Pennsylvania will be within the path of totality. Erie, located along the shores of the lake of the same name, will be one of the best places in the state to see the eclipse. Totality will last for 3 minutes and 42 seconds, starting at 3:16 p.m. The local government has put together a map of public parks and other viewing locations to watch the spectacle.

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo, New York, will see 3 minutes and 46 seconds of total darkness, beginning at 3:18 p.m. There are a number of public “ watch parties ” happening in the city, which the government has compiled for visitors and locals. Midcentury-modern architecture fans may want to use the day to visit Graycliff, a Frank Lloyd Wright–designed estate, which is hosting a special open house on April 8, allowing guests to watch the eclipse from the property.

Niagara Region, Ontario

Small parts of Canada will also witness total darkness during the 2024 eclipse. The Niagara region is the best place to see totality, which will start at 3:19 p.m. and last for 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Montreal will also experience totality, but only for a little over one minute.

Burlington, Vermont

Much of New England will miss out on totality during the 2024 eclipse, as the path will only cover parts of northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Burlington is among the best places for those in the region to travel to, as it will experience 3 minutes and 19 seconds of darkness, starting at 3:26 p.m.

Houlton, Maine

Maine is the northern most place in the United States to see the total eclipse in 2024, also making it the last place in the country to experience totality. Houlton will be among the best places in the state to watch the sight, and darkness will begin at 3:32 p.m. and last for 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

How will weather impact visibility?

Geographically, the cities listed above represent the best places to see the 2024 solar. However, weather will play a major role in just how well those on the ground will be able to see the phenomenon. It goes without saying that cloudy conditions or rain will impact visibility and make it harder to see the eclipse. Currently, meteorologist are forecasting worse conditions in the south-central United States, which could affect those in Texas and Arkansas. Those in the Midwest and northeast have better odds, where conditions are presently forecasted to be sunny and with clear skies.

What will I see during the solar eclipse if my city isn’t along the path of totality?

Though not every city will see a total solar eclipse, most of the United States will see at least a partial eclipse. For example, as NASA’s map shows, Seattle, which is one of the furthest metropolises from the eclipse’s path will still see about 20% of the sun covered by the moon. Here, peak coverage will happen around 11:29 a.m. On the south side of the country, Miami, which is also quite far from the eclipse’s path, will see 46.2% of the sun covered around 3:01 p.m.

On the other hand, cities which are not along the path of totality but are very close will see a greater percentage of the sun covered. St. Louis, for example, which is just outside the path of totality, will see the moon covering 99.1% of the sun during peak totality, which will happen at 2 p.m. For detailed information about your city, see NASA’s interactive eclipse map .

Can I watch the 2024 solar eclipse virtually?

If you won’t be within the path of totality, a number of organizations are live streaming the monumental event (This may also come in handy if a city experiences cloudy weather or rain on eclipse day). To start, NASA is offering live broadcasts in both English and Spanish and live streams from telescopes that will capture the eclipse as it moves across the country. Scientific American will capture the event with jets that have been converted into flying telescopes to chase the eclipse, offering a view that one simply can’t find on the ground.

ABC News and National Geographic are also teaming up to produce “Eclipse Across America,” a live special hosted by David Muir and Linsey Davis. Coverage starts at 2:00 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+, Hulu and Network Social Media Platforms and will broadcast from 10 cities along the path of totality, including Mazatlán, Mexico; Russelville, Arkansas; and Houlton, Maine.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

• Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
• Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
• Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
• Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at. 

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
