With the Kikkerland Digital Travel Luggage Scale , you can easily determine exactly how much your luggage weighs. These days this is more important than ever, because most airlines strictly enforce weight limits and charge exorbitant fees for overweight baggage. If your bag weighs 51 pounds instead of 50, airlines typically charge you a fee in the range of $60 to $100. If a bag exceeds 70 pounds, the fees are even higher.

UsefulThings.com, a cool gadget shop, sent Geek Alerts some awesome gizmos to test out, including this digital luggage scale. It operates on two AAA batteries and is really easy to use. Simply press the left button to power on the unit and zero it out and press the right button to switch the display between lbs, kg, oz, and g. Attach the adjustable strap to the handle on your bag, lift the scale until the bag is off the ground, and read the weight on the bright blue digital display. It sure is a lot easier and more accurate than trying to use a bathroom scale to weigh your bags.

This digital luggage scale is compact, as you can see the size compared to a Obi-Wan Lego minifigure.

More questions from me about the metro...

On my last day in Moscow, I will have to take the metro with my luggage to the meeting point of the group. I will most likely have a cabin-sized bag. I read that it's 60 RUB to take a piece of luggage with you. I don't mind paying since it's only a very small amount but just want to check. If I have a troika card, is this automatically deducted (how?) or do I have to go to a counter or just walk through. :) Some here on TA say don't buy a ticket unless asked.

Secondly, if I don't have enough credit on my card on my last metro trip, let's say only 20 RUB left, will I be able to go through the turnstiles still? When I use the metro in Singapore, my card goes into negative and the next time I top up, the amount is deducted. They allow this cos the deposit covers the difference. Is this the case in Moscow too or do I have to top up the balance at the ticket counter before entering.

You only have to pay extra for luggage if you are hauling something obscenely large. Even a medium size suitcase on wheels is ok, let alone cabin size.

Exactly. Just head straight to the turnstiles, don't ask anyone if it's ok. If the staff thinks it's not ok (incredible in your case) they will stop you and make you pay, it's their job not yours

I don't think so but I don't use Troika, so maybe others will correct me.

If you have unsufficient credit the turnistile would not open. You can tio up Troika even with R1, at the ticket window or at the ticket machine.

Re your previous thread about Troika necessity in your case - you might not bother and pay for city transport with a Visa or Mastercard contactless. Cheaper than single tickets. One turnistile marked for cards use, usually closest to the attendant... Enjoy!

Won’t the credit card company be charging me a foreign currency fee each time they convert RUB to Euros?

If I can top up a very small amount just to complete the last trip, that’s fine. In Singapore, I had to top up minimum $10 which is around 500 RUB!

In Moscow, even one rouble... I am not sure ticket machine speaks German, but surely does English...

As for the card fee-only you know; here we don't pay any...

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

• Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
• Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
• How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
• What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
• What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
• What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
