All Time Low: live at MCA

all time low melbourne tour

4 November 2023 – MCA, Melbourne – words by Georgia Gutterson – pictures by Paris Gorozidis

Baltimore pop-punk legends All Time Low made their long-awaited return to Melbourne on Saturday night as part of their current tour, playing their first ever arena shows in Australia following their latest album ‘Tell Me I’m Alive.’ Along for the ride was fellow pop-punk/emo royalty Mayday Parade, as well as Lauran Hibberd, a young and upcoming pop-rock artist from England.

It suddenly felt like home arriving at MCA, surrounded by bright hair colours and band t-shirts; they were even playing All Time Low on the PA in the lobby as people grabbed their drinks, snacks and merch. For some, it was like being reunited with family after a long break. For others, this was their first time seeing the band. Either way, we were all giddy with excitement as we went through the gates and into the arena, more ready than ever for a night of international pop-punk gloriousness.

Lauran Hibberd kicked off the night with her fun and contagious energy, dancing bouncily around the stage as she performed her catchy pop-rock songs to a Melbourne audience for the very first time, alongside her drummer and guitarist who joined her in looking like they were having the time of their lives. Hailing all the way from the UK, she won over the crowd with her wit and humour, such as dedicating a song to irritable bowel syndrome. After releasing her debut album only last year, Lauran is making herself known across the world very quickly, and deservingly so. It’s not very often we get to see an international, female solo artist open for two well-known bands, let alone at an arena show, so it was a refreshing change and one that pumped up the audience even more for what was up next.

The almost sold-out arena suddenly filled up as the very special guests, Tallahassee 5-piece Mayday Parade, graced the stage. It was just April last year that they were last on our shores, but with the way their fans were absolutely dying to see them again, you would think it’d been years. I think it’s safe to say that almost any All Time Low fan is also a Mayday fan; they both started out in the same early-mid 2000’s era, and both bands have stayed consistent with not only their music, but with their lively stage presence and obvious passion for what they do. To the crowd’s delight, Mayday Parade opened with an all-time favourite ‘Oh Well, Oh Well’ from their 2011 self-titled album. As expected, the energy in the arena soared and taking a look around, most people were singing (or screaming) along to the timeless emo anthem. They followed this up with their brand new, independently released single ‘More Like a Crash’, which will undoubtedly be a hit in no time – there were plenty of people who already knew all the words.

The rest of the set was an absolute treat for the long-time fans, with four songs from their classic 2007 album ‘A Lesson in Romantics’, including a tear-jerking solo performance of ‘Miserable at Best’ by vocalist Derek on the piano. Almost everyone in the arena was singing at the top of their lungs and holding up their phone lights, creating a truly magical and unforgettable atmosphere. We didn’t get to hear any songs from their most recent album ‘What it Means to Fall Apart’, but it seems like the band knew exactly what the audience wanted to hear most, especially when they were limited to an hour-long set. Sure enough, we all went ballistic for their last two songs ‘Jersey’ and ‘Jamie All Over’. And to think this was only just the beginning.

After what felt like a surprisingly short wait, everyone roared as Alex Gaskarth, Jack Barakat, Zack Merrick and Rian Dawson took to the stage. There’s something very special about seeing a band you grew up listening to step onto an arena stage, still the same four members as when they first started, and Alex still wearing a Glamour Kills shirt (a tie-dye muscle tee to be exact), which he must have probably had since the ‘Nothing Personal’ days. And speaking of the 2009 album, they kicked off their set perfectly with two favourites from it – ‘Lost in Stereo’ and ‘Damned if I Do Ya (Damned if I Don’t)’, followed by two more older favourites ‘Six Feet Under the Stars’ and ‘Poppin’ Champagne’ from perhaps their most iconic album, 2007’s ‘So Wrong, It’s Right’. An immaculate start to the set if you were to ask any millennial, old-school fan in the room. For a little while there it felt like we were being transported back to 2009, but it wasn’t long before we got to hear some of their new songs from their latest album ‘Tell Me I’m Alive’, including a medley of ‘Modern Love’, ‘Tell Me I’m Alive’, and ‘Stella’, from ‘Nothing Personal’.

One of the best things about All Time Low is how much fun they have on stage. It was their touring member Dan’s birthday, and the crowd helped sing happy birthday to him not once, not twice, but three times over the course of the night, and during ‘Calm Down’ Alex grabbed a fistful of birthday cake and teased his bandmates as they were playing with his sticky cake-covered hand. There’s always bound to be some shenanigans at an All Time Low show, so it wasn’t really that surprising that we saw Jack, Dan and eventually Alex all do a shooey – an exclusively Aussie tradition of which Alex unapologetically gave his thoughts: “You guys are f*cking sick. Who came up with this?”

all time low melbourne tour

We got to hear a few songs from ‘Wake Up, Sunshine’ live for the first time, as well as recent standalone singles ‘PMA’, which Lauran Hibberd returned to the stage for to sing a duet, as well as ‘Fake as Hell’ (unfortunately Avril Lavigne wasn’t there to sing her part). The only albums we didn’t get to hear anything from were ‘Don’t Panic’ and their debut ‘Put Up or Shut Up’, but considering just how many albums the band has released over the past two decades, they did a pretty solid job of spreading their discography across their almost two-hour set. They had to manage to fit a ‘Round the Twist’ singalong in there too, of course. It was clear that all of their songs have proven to be timeless, and All Time Low fans genuinely love the music they make as they continue to evolve as a band. The crowd went nuts for ‘Weightless’ and ‘Monsters’ right before the encore, and even more so for when the band returned and played ‘Sleepwalking’. But then when it came to the moment we knew they were about to play their final song of the night, everyone’s phones were ready to capture one of the most iconic pop-punk songs of all time, one that could never possibly get old. Everyone in the seats was standing, and everyone on the floor was jumping. Dear Maria, Count Me In.

After an extremely grateful thank-you to the crowd and acknowledging their disbelief that they were playing to 5000 people across the other side of the world, the band left the stage…well, except for Alex Gaskarth who stayed on to dance to ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ by Whitney Houston. This was truly a gig to remember; a rare opportunity to see not one but two of the most legendary bands in the pop-punk/emo world play an arena show in Melbourne together. Two bands that sincerely love what they do, and that’s exactly why they’re still around and playing to so many dedicated fans. When thanking the crowd, Alex described the All Time Low fanbase as a family – this couldn’t have felt more true, and we can’t wait to reunite again next time.

Recent tour reviews

Took my daughter to her absolute favorite band for her sweet 16. It was cool because it was her actual birthday on the day of the concert. We got box seats so that we could sit if we wanted and not be on the floor and risk not being able to see, and avoid potential mosh pits! It was excellent. One person did fall and had a hard time but the lead singer of ATL stopped the concert and brought in security to get the person off the floor to safety and got them checked out. That was really cool. Never been to a concert where that happened. We missed Dashboard Confessional, but that couldn’t be helped. We have never been to the Fillmore venue and we were not disappointed!

This was my first All Time Low concert and I enjoyed it so much. I already loved the band yet somehow, I seemed to love them even more after the show. The streamers, the confetti and the lights were an amazing asset to the performance and I really, really, really hope that they tour again in England and I get to see them again. Their charisma was like nothing I was expecting and the general atmosphere supported by the boys (men really) was amazing. Everyone was singing, dancing, jumping, raving and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Dear Maria Count Me In in the encore was extraordinary and it was very sentimental as it was from So Wrong It’s Right. Kids In The Dark and Lost In Stereo were two of my favourite songs played at the show, and somehow again, I’ve come to love them even more. Dark Side Of Your Room was and addition to the setlist and my friends and I were thrilled with the change. It was a shame Pierce the Veil didn’t tour due to certain circumstances, but Creeper got the crowd going wild before ATL even came out. I would definitely see All Time Low again, and hopefully they’ll perform the same setlist but with a new album soon!

As it was my first time seeing All Time Low, I wasn't quite sure, what to expect. That being said - I was not disappointed!

First of all, let me recommend you that if this is your first time to a Show like this and you're uncomfortable in a crowd, avoid the Center of the crowd, as this is where it gets really wild and you're very likely to be squashed or jumped on (in a harmless way).

The band's Performance was amazing, packing out all of their greatest Songs, you are sure to hear your favourite, with Alex' live vocals sounding as clear as they do on CD, whether it's while jumping around to Kids In The Dark or performing a quieter Version of Therapy.

On stage banter and crowd interaction also didn't come too short, with the crowd being encouraged to sing and jump along, or even get up on peoples' shoulders.

If you feel like it, bring along a spare bra to throw up on stage and Show your love.

The Last Dinner Party

July 20 - july 23.

VENUE UPGRADES DUE TO HUGE DEMAND! Due to enormous demand, The Last Dinner Party tour SOLD OUT in record time. All dates will be upgraded, all shows remaining the same date. Tickets to the Sydney show, now taking place at Hordern Pavilion, ARE ON SALE NOW.  Melbourne, upgrading to Festival Hall, and Brisbane, upgrading to Riverstage, will have tickets available on sale from Tuesday April 23rd.

The Last Dinner Party have announced their headline Australian shows for July 2024, touring Brisbane, Melbourne & Sydney.

Conceived during a wine-stained evening in Brixton, the name embodies a musical and aesthetic ethos of decadence, mystery, spectacle and charm. Finding artistry in the intersection between the beautiful, sublime and grotesque, the band are guided by their favourite Romantic poets and Gothic novelists.

The preceding years of isolation and anxiety have only served to heighten The Last Dinner Party’s creative appeal as they usher in a new era of unashamed maximalism and untethered euphoria. They cast their net of inspiration across artists and genres, from Kate Bush and David Bowie, glam rock and new wave, to unexpected moments of twelve bar blues, classical overture and heavy synth breakdowns.

Singer Abigaille, guitarists Emily and Lizzie, keyboardist Aurora and bassist Georgia weave a fantasy of haunting melodies, explosive choruses, and lyrics that embrace tragedy and triumph in equal measure. At their shows, the band lead audiences through the soaring crescendos and pin-drop silences of the most debaucherous dinner parties, gathering a dedicated and growing company of attendees with every performance.

The band are currently based in London writing, recording, and preparing for their next spectacle.

You are cordially invited.

On a recent trip to the Emerald City , my goal was to eat as many carbs as possible while catching up with friends. Thank goodness for outstanding espresso drinks to keep the mission on track.

Little Jaye Bakery and Cafe In Seattle's South Park neighborhood scores big brownie points for its ... [+] playful updates of childhood classics.

Little Jaye South

What began as a wildly popular popup has grown into a very cool cafe — yes, that’s a painting of Anthony Bourdain and Dolly Parton posing American Gothic-style anchoring the warehouse-like space in the South Park neighborhood. This is the sweet spinoff of West Seattle’s Lady Jaye , a magnet for carnivores who appreciate meat cooked low-and-slow and served with a lot of style.

Walk into this order-at-the-counter bake shop and you’ll surely be tempted to try one of everything from the food porn-ish Rice Krispies treats — including a Fruity Pebbles and a potato chip embedded version — plus outstanding biscuits and breakfast sandwiches. Yes, please to crispy hash browns and bacon and eggs in between toasted brioche.

Loved this spot so much, I had to circle back for seconds later in the week. The biscuits and gravy were calling and I must go, said John Muir. OK, the famous naturalist never said that but consuming this filling breakfast classic surely would’ve got him further down the trail. It’s definitely the sausage-iest sausage gravy I’ve ever had the pleasure of devouring.

Israel conducts limited strikes targeting iran report says, the first unintended consequence of ai and it s huge.

Little Jaye serves Stamp Act Coffee and features a daily latte special with various cereal milk, proving once again that Trix are not just for kids.

Congrats to chef Charlie Garrison and his crew for creating such an incredible place. So popular that they’re expanding into the space next door.

Seattle's Bakery Nouveau does an exceptional job of convincing its customers they're in France with ... [+] its lineup of sweet and savory pastries.

Bakery Nouveau

William and Heather Leaman opened their first Bakery Nouveau in West Seattle in 2006 and quickly became a beloved destination winning awards and accolades along the way. There are now three locations, all featuring cases filled with an extraordinary selection of sweets and savories that look as if they’ve been flown in from France. Nope, made right there by a team of devoted bakers.

It’s always a struggle to choose just one, but on the most recent visit, the caramelized mushroom tart spoke to me. It was absolutely perfect, each bite combining the flakiest pastry and the meaty mushrooms, grated parmesan on top. Ask them to warm it up a bit.

Not surprisingly, this shop offers a nice variety when it comes to coffee, too. Dancing Goats out of Olympia is the featured drip pour while the dark roast for espresso drinks comes from Lighthouse Roasters . The medium roast spotlight shines on a rotating purveyor and these days that’s Stamp Act.

If you’re looking to burn off some calories after the carb-loading feast, head over to Lincoln Park and walk down to the path along the water. Gorgeous scenery and a chance to take a selfie with one of the magnificent Northwest Trolls by Danish artist Thomas Dambo.

Caffe Umbria in Seattle's Pioneer Square makes one of the city's best lattes and serves pastries ... [+] from Macrina Bakery.

Caffè Umbria

Love this origin story, as told on the wholesale coffee roaster’s website:

Caffè Umbria is a full-service, wholesale coffee roaster based in Seattle, Washington. But the family's roots in roasting go back to the 1940's, when Ornello Bizzarri built his roastery in Perugia, Italy. The Arco Etrusco in our logo is a landmark of the Umbrian city.

Roaster Emanuele Bizzarri has always had coffee in his blood — from his grandfather Ornello to his father Umberto. When his family moved to Seattle from Italy, he became the third generation in a family of roasters, and he's since carried that tradition on through Caffè Umbria with partners Jesse Sweeney and Pasquale Madeddu.

Cafes across the country feature these beans but I’ve got a special soft spot for the location in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. So much so that I was there when the doors opened at 7 a.m. on a cloudy Monday. The staff might’ve still been a little sleepy, but the latte was expertly made. Pastries are from Macrina Bakery and while the ham-studded biscuit was fine. It would have been even better had it been warmed up and served with jam.

On this visit, I stayed at the artsy CitizenM a few minutes walk from Umbria, a property that enjoys smashing waterfront views of Elliott Bay.

Shikorina is a bakery and cafe on Seattle's Capitol Hill that's dedicated to using organic and ... [+] sustainable ingredients in its lineup of pastries.

Shikorina Pastries

This sweet shop on Capitol Hill recently relocated from the Central District. Hana Yohannes founded the bake shop in 2020, looking for a way to share her passion for pastries with an appreciative audience.

While already famous for gorgeous cakes, there’s also an extensive lineup of creative cookies and other tempting treats. And get a load of those pretty Pop Tarts.

Coffee here is extra special. The team uses single origin Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee, hand roasting the beans following the traditional Eritrean/Ethiopian customs. The Americano I ordered was deeply delicious!

Caffe Vita at KEXP's Gathering Space at the Seattle Center might be the coolest place to drink ... [+] coffee on the planet.

Caffe Vita at KEXP’s Gathering Space

This roastery got its start on Capitol Hill in 1995 and since expanded its reach from coast-to-coast with operations in Brooklyn and Phoenix and partners showcasing the beans all over the map.

It’s now part of the Yes Parade restaurant group and current owner Deming Maclise got his start in the business as a barista. His love of the process shows up in those fine espresso drinks. While sipping, indulge in one of those pastries from Macrina Bakery or Sea Wolf, a breakfast taco or that jar cleverly branded as Cake for Breakfast. There’s also a selection of prepared Middle Eastern dishes from Mamnoon and Vita also shines a spotlight on Ellenos Yogurt and Iggy’s kombucha, all local favorites.

Can’t imagine a more welcoming place to sip a cuppa than the vast Gathering Space at KEXP, the coolest station on the planet. Commercial-free, listener supported, KEXP began as a college station at the University of Washington and has grown to a mega-hit sensation among listeners everywhere.

Consider yourself lucky if you happen into the Gathering Space during a live performance, which turns the place into a dance party no matter what time of day. On chilly February morning, I had the good fortune to witness an electrifying set by Denver-based band DeVotchKa . By the time the last song finished, everyone in the crowd was plenty warmed up.

Dahlia Bakery in downtown Seattle serves a colorful collection of Mochi Donuts along with an ... [+] extensive lineup of sweet and savory pastries, sandwiches and grab-and-go creations.

Dahlia Bakery

Most mornings, there’s a steady stream of regulars flowing into this downtown landmark, seeking something caffeinated to go with something sweet. Well, hello Oh Mochi Donuts . Those gluten-free rice flour pastries seems to be everywhere these days, but those at Dahlia are particularly pretty.

I’m always tempted by savory baked goods, too, and this talented pastry team delivers with intriguing creations such as the excellent mushroom and lemongrass puff. Best of both worlds experience has got to be Hudda’s Butterscotch Cookie made with smoked oats and finished with a liberal sprinkle of sea salt.

On the coffee side, please make mine a drip, no room for cream, thanks. Ahhh, that dark roast hits the spot. Yes, it’s Starbucks . You didn’t think we were going to skip the multinational roaster that put Seattle on the coffee map way back when. Tom Douglas Restaurants have been serving it for decades.
