Tips for Self-Guided Walking Tours at the University of Toronto (With Map!)

Tips for Self-Guided Walking Tours at the University of Toronto (With Map!)

Interested in walking tours in the hear of Toronto? I want to share this simple map and tour itinerary with you!

This is a route I generally take through the U of T campus when I lead tours, take my kids for a walk or just want to be surrounded by beautiful scenery in the middle of the city. This walk is excellent because it takes you through the heart of the U of T downtown campus, from Bloor Street to College Street.

Here’s the link

U of T Walk Map by Mike https://goo.gl/maps/Dbm53QqvuHF2

One of the beautiful things about this route is that this walk goes through green spaces with nice buildings all around. In other words it bypasses the busier streets.

The keys elements are:

1. Philosophers Walk – Start by the Alexandra Gates on Bloor St. between the Royal Ontario Museum and the Royal Conservatory of Music. Location: Across the street from 210 Bloor St W. Wikipedia

2. Trinity College – Walking south you arrive at Hoskin Ave and Trinity College. This is a fantastic building. If the interior quad is open go in through the gates on the east side (seems closed often in winter). Address: Trinity College, 6 Hoskin Ave Wikipedia

3. Soldiers’ Tower – One of the prettier landmarks on the walk. Spend some time here looking at the engravings of soldiers names (including the famous soldier-poet John McCrae of In Flander’s Fields fame). Address: Soldier’s Tower, Hart House Circle Wikipedia

4. King’s College Circle / Road – Famous central area with nice view of the CN Tower (great buildings all around including University College and Convocation Hall ). Address: 180 College St. (College and King’s College Rd)

Walk Extensions

Route A / Mike’s map shows a route which entails walking east to Queen’s Park after you reach College St. Transit options from here include the College streetcar and Queen’s Park subway station.

Route B / Alternately, you might want to try walking up Spadina Ave past the Daniel’s Architecture Building or up St. George, with both these routes returning to Bloor St. Transit options from here include the Spadina streetcar and Spadina or St. George stations.

That wraps up my walk!  Hope this is useful to you. I am a proud alumnus of the university and though I attended Scarborough College in the eastern part of the city, you might say I am a devotee of the St. George campus. I will venture by there regularly if I am in the downtown west. If I do I always bring my camera!

If you are interested I lead the Tdot Shots group photo walks and I can be hired to lead private walking tours as well. Do not hesitate to reach out!

Enjoy one of the most beautiful areas of the city!

Student Life Tasks & Topics

Sharing knowledge and experiences, u of t students to lead campus tours of indigenous history.

This article was originally published by Sean McNeely on U of T News on September 1, 2020. Reprinted with permission.

Drew Rickard  is still determining what, and what not, to share.

He’s part of a group of Indigenous students from the University of Toronto and young adults from across the GTA who are being trained to lead virtual tours that celebrate the rich Indigenous history of U of T’s three campuses and surrounding areas.

The third-year Faculty of Arts & Science student and member of Woodsworth College – who is majoring in philosophy and exploring minors in political science or Indigenous studies – is both excited and a little nervous. He’s never been a tour guide before.

“My interest in this is really in my identity and reconnecting with that,” says Rickard who is a member of the Cree First Nation. “I’m proud of who I am. This is a missing puzzle piece for something that I was already putting together – and so far it’s been a great learning experience.”

The guides in training are encouraged to complement historical information with their own personal knowledge and experiences, giving the tours added depth and substance.

That’s the part Rickard wrestles with.

“It’s not easy to share who you are in an intimate way with people who you don’t know,” says Rickard, who plans on adding elements of his family history from Moose Factory, Ont. “And some of the materials we deal with tend to be very sensitive and very charged.”

Set to begin this fall, the tours are part of an initiative from an ongoing partnership between U of T and First Story Toronto, an organization originally known as the Toronto Native Community History Project. First Story is dedicated to researching and preserving the Indigenous history of Toronto and the surrounding region.

Jon Johnson , an assistant professor, teaching stream, at Woodsworth College,  has been a part of First Story and the Toronto Native Community History Project for years . Johnson, who is mostly of French Canadian descent and has a small amount of Haudenosaunee and Kichisipirini ancestry, is overseeing the training along with  Jill Carter , (Anishinaabe/Ashkenazi) an assistant professor with the Faculty of Arts & Science’s Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies.

The first cohort of guides, including Rickard, completed their training this summer while a second group is set to begin their instruction later this fall, bringing the number of new guides to 17.

Originally, the plan was to have the guides give in-person tours, but the pandemic forced the tours to shift to an online format, using 360-degree video and other digital resources to host tours through platforms like ZOOM or Microsoft Teams.

The new format will in no way lessen the impact of having Indigenous young adults lead the tours, according to Johnson.

“They’re going to bring a whole variety of perspectives and knowledges that may not be as visible in an older generation of guides,” he says. “It’s going to really energize the tours.”

Carter expects both the guides and the guided to benefit from the experience.

“Their stories, the lessons they draw from past teachings, the ways in which they have learned to read the land and their experiences as young Indigenous Peoples are crucial additions to First Story,” Carter says. She adds, “These guides are working with elders to recover the language of these territories, becoming intimate with buried histories and gaining skills in oratory and digital storytelling. These skills and this experience will ultimately serve them well when pursuing future academic and professional goals.

“Soon, they will meet faculty and fellow students across departments and disciplines as they conduct tours. Who knows what opportunities such encounters may open up for them?”

For Rickard, leading the tours is an opportunity to better connect with his own roots while bringing the historical information to life.

“There are a lot of themes of identity loss and retrieval and I think having people from the communities is not only a way of addressing that, it will also make the participants’ experience that much more real,” Rickard says.

Still, he says he has no intention of trying to persuade anyone’s thinking or opinions. “I think it’s important to allow someone to come to their own conclusions. I think that has more staying power than telling someone what something definitively is.”

COVID-19 hitting N.L. harder than many people think, according to researcher

One in 63 newfoundlanders and labradorians have covid-19, says tara moriarty.

university of toronto in person tours

Woman wearing white lab coat, smiling.

Summer may be not quite over but cold and flu season is kicking into high gear early — and COVID-19 is still in the picture, a leading Canadian researcher says.

Prof. Tara Moriarity, PhD, an infectious diseases researcher at the University of Toronto, said one in every 37 Canadians have COVID-19 right now, and infections are climbing.

"There are about 1.1 million infections a week," Moriarty told CBC Radio's St. John's Morning Show .

In Newfoundland and Labrador, she says one in 63 people are infected with COVID-19.

This number is low compared to the rest of the country, but Moriarty said early September is usually accompanied by a dip in infections.

"There are about 8,000 infections a week," she said. "People should be aware that even if things are improving right now, they can still go back up again."

KP variants are the most common strain of COVID-19 impacting Canadians this season.

Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, Newfoundland and Labrador's chief medical officer of health, says the virus is considered like other respiratory ailments, including influenza, and she is encouraging people to get vaccinated.

"COVID is just like any other respiratory disease at this point. We're recommending that people stay home while they're feeling really unwell," Fitzgerald said.

Moriarty said vaccinations that will help fight the latest variant of COVID-19 will come to Canada in mid-October.

As pandemic lockdowns move further into the past, Moriarty said health departments are underreporting COVID-19, despite the impact of the virus.

To combat the virus, she wants to see mask mandates remain in hospitals, and for governments to launch an active information campaign to remind people of the risks of COVID-19.

"We're really not detecting a lot of the infections, including the serious infections, and in most provinces there's really limited testing in hospitals now as well," Moriarty said.

"COVID-19 unfortunately has not gone away."
