Viking River Cruises and Portraits of Southern France Itinerary

viking river tours france

Anyone who has dreamed of traveling to the Burgundy and Provence regions of France would love the 8-day, "Portraits of Southern France" itinerary of Viking River Cruises . The journey links Chalon-sur-Saône north of Lyon with Avignon in the south near Marseille , sailing on the Saône and Rhône Rivers.

In 2014, Viking launched three new Longships for this itinerary— Viking Heimdal , Viking Buri, and Viking Hermod. These innovative ships, with their squared bow and sunlit Aquavit Lounge, are a great addition to this region.

Cruise the Burgundy and Provence Regions of France

Linda Garrison

The river cruise is almost all-inclusive, with all meals and complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks available during lunch and dinner. The ship also has complimentary WiFi. Although the cruise features time to sail along the rivers and enjoy the scenery, the ship also stops at some memorable ports, including visits to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The ports of call and example included activities are:

  • Beune  - Burgundy wine route excursion and wine tasting; visit to Hôtel-Dieu
  • Lyon  - Tour of the old city and free afternoon to sample the local food in the gastronomic capital of France
  • Vienne - Walking tour featuring the Temple of Augustus & Livia
  • Tournon - Tain l'Hermitage excursion and wine tasting
  • Viviers - Evening walk through the Old Town
  • Arles - Walking tour that includes Les Arènes amphitheater
  • Avignon - Walking tour featuring Pont d'Avignon and the Palace of the Popes

While on the ship, guests get an opportunity to sample a variety of French cheeses, learn to make chocolate fondue, taste some Burgundy wines , listen to some French music, and attend lectures on the area. Most ports include time for shopping or exploring on your own, which is easier than on many ocean voyages since the river ships usually dock right near the city center.

Spend Time in Avignon Before or After Your River Cruise

Saône and Rhône River cruises of southern France often embark or disembark in Avignon . This popular city of about 90,000 is best-known as the residence of the Pope for 70 years in the 14th century. Not surprisingly, the most famous site in Avignon is the Palace of the Popes ( Palais des Papes ), once the center of Christianity.

The second most popular site in Avignon are the remains of Pont Saint-Bénézet or Pont d'Avignon. This ancient bridge is the subject of a well-known French nursery rhyme, Sur le Pont d'Avignon.

Avignon was a walled city in medieval times, and much of the old wall remains today. Avignon's old town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

It's a great town to spend a few days before or after a river cruise, which allows visitors time to explore the area and see nearby sites like the remarkable Pont du Gard .

The first important site visitors often see is Clock Square, or Place de l'Horlage, which is the center of activity in old town Avignon and site of the City Hall or Hotel de Ville.

The Avignon City Hall, or Hotel de Ville, is located on the town's main square, Place de l'Horlage, which is also called the Clock Square since the Clock Tower is on the back of the City Hall. The Place de l'Horloge is the center of activity in old town Avignon, with shops, restaurants, cafes, street vendors, and a carousel. The square also is the site of Avignon's large Christmas market in November and December each year.

The Clock Tower was built on the 14th or 15th century and backs up to the Hotel de Ville or City Hall on the Clock Square. The Opera Theatre is next door. Built in 1846 after a fire, the National Opera Theatre is located immediately to right of the City Hall (Hotel de Ville).

When Pope Clement V was elected in 1309, he moved the residence (and headquarters) of the Catholic Church from Italy to Avignon. Since he was French, he believed the King of France would be friendlier to the Pope. Avignon was a tiny town, and the Papacy was able to just buy the whole town.

The huge Palace of the Popes (Palais des Papes) was the residence of the Popes for 70 years. Internal conflict within the Church led to the Great Schism of the West, and a second Pope lived in Rome starting in 1378, but until the conflicts were resolved in the early 1400s, Avignon played an important role as one of the centers of Catholicism. Since six Popes were elected at the Palace in Avignon, it is still an important historical and religious site. Architects also consider the Palace one of the most impressive medieval Gothic structures in Europe.

Notre Dame des Doms is located on Place du Palais, adjacent to the Palace of the Popes, in old town Avignon. Notre Dame is Avignon's cathedral and dates back to the 12th century. The giant gilded statue of the Virgin Mary weighing over 4 tons is the most notable feature of the Cathedral. It was added in the 19th century.

Visitors to the Palace of the Popes can tour on their own, with an audio guide, or with a local guide. Entering the Palace, it's easy to identify its Gothic style by glancing up at the ceiling. The vaulted ceiling in the Palace of the Popes is a good example of Gothic architecture. Many of the walls and ceilings in the Palace were once painted or decorated with figures, but only a few of these medieval artifacts remain.

The Pope could look out onto this Grand Courtyard from the window of his bedroom. The Benedict XII Cloister is a courtyard surrounded by two levels of galleries. The lawn, galleries, and pointed archways are still used today for weddings and special events. The Cloister is named for Benedict XII since he was the Pope who ordered in built.

This huge dining room at the Palace of the Popes in Avignon is 130 feet long and 60 feet long. Although the Pope held huge banquets here, protocol made him sit separate from his 200 guests.  The wooden, barrel-vaulted ceiling was added in the 20th century. Prior to that change, the ceiling looked like the night sky and was painted dark blue with yellow stars.

The Pope, Cardinals, and guests ate huge dinners in this great hall. They often had 9 courses, with 3 choices for each course. Or, about 25-30 dishes at each meal!

Medieval chefs didn't have super-strong electric exhaust fans to remove the smoke and heat from their kitchens. They had tall, funnel-like chimneys like those seen at the Palace of the Popes. This kitchen would often cook up to five oxen at a time over spits in order to feed the 1500 people working, living in, or visiting the Palace. The nearby gardens supplied the wood for the cook fires.

The North Sacristy at the Palace of the Popes links the Great Chapel to the Pope's private rooms. Although these tombs of cardinals and other spiritual dignitaries look real, they are actually plaster replicas. The Great Chapel at the Palace of the Popes in Avignon is 150 feet long and 60 feet high. Its Gothic style is like much of the rest of the Palace. This Chapel is still well-used, hosting about 60 major ceremonies each year.

Leaving the Palace of the Popes, visitors get a great panoramic view of the Pont d'Avignon from the walk up to the Jardins des Papes. When completed in the 12th century, this bridge was about 3000-feet long and had 22 arches. It extended across two rivers to a tollgate on the far side. When first built, it was the only bridge across the river between Lyon and the Mediterranean. Today only four arches remain, and the remains are a popular tourist attraction, especially for those who remember the French nursery rhyme.

The medieval Popes once grew herbs and plants in a lovely garden on the hill up from the Palace of the Popes. They also had a zoo in the garden. Today, it's a quiet place to walk, feed the ducks, and check out the panoramic views of the Pont d'Avignon and of the old town.

Les Halles may be ugly on the outside, but it's fun to walk around the inside of this market that sells produce, meats, fish, and a little bit of everything else. It's found on Place Pie.

The Jardins des Papes (Garden of the Popes) offers great views of the Rhône River and of old town Avignon. This fascinating medieval town is a marvelous place to either start or end your cruise of southern France on the Saône and Rhône Rivers.

VIKING RIVER CRUISES Pre- and Post-Cruise Land Package Extensions

LOIRE VALLEY PRE-CRUISE EXTENSION 3 Nights from $999 per person Day 1 | Fly to Paris. We meet you at the airport and transport you to the first-class Le Méridien Etoile (or similar)*. The evening is yours to relax or enjoy a romantic dinner in the "City of Lights." Day 2 | After breakfast, check out of your Paris hotel and begin your ride through the French countryside. Our first stop is the city of Orléans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city’s long history includes everyone from the Druids, Gauls and Romans to Attila to the famous Maid of Orléans, Jeanne d’Arc. Later, during the Renaissance, the area became a fashionable location for châteaux, and the University of Orléans achieved great prestige. When France colonized part of North America, they honored Orléans by naming a certain city La Nouvelle Orléans, or New Orleans. See some of the city’s sights, including the university, the botanic garden and Jeanne d’Arc’s childhood home (now a museum), then take some free time to explore on your own or get some lunch. In the afternoon we will continue to Tours, where you check in to the superior first-class Clarion Chateau Belmont (or similar) for a 2-night stay. Relax on your own this evening. (B) Day 3 | After breakfast, set off on a guided tour of Loire Valley châteaux, including walks through two of the best-known and most beautiful of these grand houses, Chambord and Chenonceau—plus along the way you will catch views of several prominent châteaux and learn about their history. Your first guided tour is of Chambord. Built by François I, a great admirer of Leonardo da Vinci, in the early 16th century, the structure is reminiscent of the Tuscan style, centered around a magnificent double spiral staircase. Chambord was later greatly expanded by Louis XIV; it has hundreds of apartments, each equipped with two rooms and its own fireplace, plus grand royal apartments and an elaborate rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of its vast parklands. After your tour, stop in Amboise to see its hilltop Chateau Royal and take free time or grab a bite before proceeding to Chenonceau for a tour of one of the world’s most beautiful estates. The grand castle, built beside the Cher River in the 16th century by the wealthy Bohier family, was confiscated by the same François I, who enjoyed many festive times there, as did his heir Henry II and Henry’s queen, Catherine de’ Medici. Toward the end of the 16th century a new wing was built that stretched across the river with graceful arches, a sumptuous ballroom and a kitchen with convenient docking facilities for groceries to arrive by boat. The last French sovereign to stay in Chenonceau was Louis XIV in 1650. The house has been relatively well cared-for, and after serving as a hospital for wounded soldiers during World War I, it has been completely restored, including the lovely formal gardens. Drive back to Tours for dinner. (B) Day 4 | After breakfast, check out of your hotel and enjoy a guided exploration of Tours, including the main cathedral and some of the city’s many parks and bridges, before beginning your scenic ride to Bordeaux. Stop at Poitiers for a brief tour of this picturesque medieval city, once capital of the Vienne region, which features well-preserved Romanesque architecture and Baptistère Saint-Jean, thought to be the oldest Christian church in France. Take some free time to look around a bit or grab lunch before continuing on to Bordeaux to embark your river cruise ship. (B) The following meals are included:
B = Breakfast *Airport meet & greet transfers included when air is purchased from Viking Cruises. NOTE. Explore More pricing is based on extension hotel check-in date. Extension availability is limited and some restrictions apply with regard to departure date and cruise direction. Please call for details.

PARIS — POST CRUISE EXTENSION 3 Nights from $799 per person Day 1 | After breakfast, disembark and proceed to the Gare de Bordeaux-Saint Jean station for a fantastic ride on France’s high-speed TGV line. When you arrive at Paris Montparnasse, we will transfer you to the first-class Le Méridien Étoile (or similar), located minutes from the legendary Champs Elysées. (B) Day 2 | This morning, enjoy a guided walking tour of Paris’s Marais district on the Right Bank. You will see aristocratic neighborhoods dating back as far as the 13th century as well as the historic Jewish area and trendy art galleries. Your afternoon and evening are at leisure—visit museums like the Pompidou, Orsay or Picasso, admire historic buildings like Fontainebleau and the Paris Opera. Experience the world-famous Louvre, home of da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” the “Winged Victory of Samothrace,” I.M. Pei’s iconic glass pyramids and much more. (B) Day 3 | You have a full day to further explore the “City of Light.” Stroll through Montmartre, shop along the Champs Elysées, ride up to the top of the Eiffel Tower and sample some of the famous French cuisine. You might like to take a Seine cruise aboard a bâteau-mouche this evening to see some of the city’s landmarks and lovely bridges. (B) Day 4 | After breakfast, check out of your hotel and proceed to the airport for your return flight.* (B) The following meals are included: B = Breakfast *Airport meet & greet transfers included when air is purchased from Viking Cruises. 4 Best Viking River Cruises in France

Viking River Cruises in France

Viking River Cruises is among the world’s best river cruise lines. In fact, it basically invented the whole concept singlehandedly, creating a new niche in the cruise market that proved to be super-popular among the cruising audience. This multi-award-winning company offers river cruises all over Europe, but some of their top itineraries run through France. In this post, we wanted to highlight the three best Viking River cruises in France.

France is a nation of rivers. Its major cities originated on riverbanks, at strategic intersections between roads and rivers. Paris was established along the Seine, Strasbourg on the banks of the Rhine and Lyon along the Rhône, just to name a few. France’s riverbanks are also where much of its cultural life happened/happens, from the wineries of Bordeaux to the perfect painting light in Provence.

So, if you really want to experience France at its finest, hop on one of four best Viking River cruises in France.

1. Lyon & Provence Cruise

Avignon, France - Best Viking River Cruises in France

Provence is one of France’s most famous regions, a place characterized by endless lavender fields, stone buildings, medieval towns, sunflowers and wineries. This is the place of Van Gogh and Cézanne, who with their artwork captured these landscapes forever.

The Lyon and Provence Cruise starts in Avignon and takes you to gorgeous towns like Arles, Viviers and Tournon before ending in Lyon. In Lyon, you’ll have no fewer than three days to explore this spectacular city, which is considered to be France’s culinary center. This 8-day Viking River cruise in France is packed with fun activities and memorable sights, including the Palace of the Popes in Avignon, gastronomy in Lyon, truffle hunting and Beaujolais wine tasting.

  • Destinations: Avignon, Arles, Viviers, Tournon and Lyon
  • Duration: 8 days
  • Price: from $2,199
  • Call for exclusive pricing: 866-867-6538

2. Chateaux, Rivers & Wine Cruise

Wines in Bordeaux, France - Best Viking River Cruises in France

You’ll spend eight days sailing through Aquitaine, which at one point was the wealthiest kingdom in all of Europe. This is where you’ll find the most imposing castles and chateaux, some of the world’s most famous vineyards and truly superb seafood .

Offering all sorts of one-of-a-kind experiences, from creating your own cognac to sampling the finest oysters in the country, the Chateaux, Rivers & Wine Cruise will be remembered for the rest of your life. If you’re after wining and dining, this is without question one of the best Viking River cruises in France. Additionally, Bordeaux itself is home to tons of historical architecture and heritage. Paris is the only French city that has more historic monuments!

  • Destinations: Bordeaux, Cadillac, Libourne, Bourg and Blaye, and Pauillac
  • Price: from $2,399

3. Paris & The Heart Of Normandy Cruise

Omaha Beach, Paris to Normandy Viking River Cruise

Anyone who wants to explore the northwest of France should take a close look at this eight-day Paris & the Heart of Normandy cruise . This round-trip voyage from Paris takes passengers through Giverny, the location of quaint farmsteads and glorious gardens. It’s where Claude Monet used to live, thes beautiful landscapes featured abundantly in his paintings. You’ll also pay a visit to historic Rouen, where you can walk in the footsteps of Joan of Arc.

Also included in the itinerary are visits to some of the most iconic World War II D-Day beaches in Normandy, such as Juno Beach, Omaha Beach and Gold Beach. Sailing up and down the seine, you’ll also pass through scenic towns like Les Andelys, known for its Chateau Gaillard, and Mantes-la-Jolie. Of course, they’ll be plenty of chances to sample mouthwatering French cuisine, too.

  • Destinations:  Paris, Vernon, Rouen, Normandy beaches, Les Andelys and Mantes-la-Jolie
  • Price: from $1,999

4. France’s Finest Cruise

Rouen, France - Best Viking River Cruises in France

For a varied taste—literally and figuratively—of what France has to offer, there’s no better Viking River cruise in France than this one. Its name, France’s Finest Cruise , is not a lie. This 15-day cruise combines two individual cruises by Viking River Cruises: the above-mentioned Paris & the Heart of Normandy and Lyon & Provence cruises.

It allows you to explore Paris and northwestern France, as well as Lyon, the Provence and southeastern France. In terms of variety, it doesn’t really get any better than this. From the urban, cultural delights of Paris and World War II beaches to world-class cuisine in Lyon and Roman history in Provence, this might just be the best “France in a nutshell” cruise in the world.

  • Destinations: Paris, Vernon, Rouen, Normandy beaches, Les Andelys, Mantes-la-Jolie, Lyon, Vienne, Tournon, Avignon, Arles
  • Duration: 15 days

A Zürich, Switzerland Land Trip With Viking River Cruise

D uring our unforgettable Paris to the Swiss Alps cruise with Viking River Cruises, my husband (Eddie) and I found ourselves in the captivating city of Zürich, Switzerland. Although I had been to Switzerland before, Zürich was an unexplored gem. Viking River Cruises seamlessly transported us from the cruise ship to the hotel, and later to the airport, as part of their all-inclusive package.

Zürich bewitched us with its mesmerizing beauty and undeniable charm, despite being notoriously expensive. Over the course of our two-day stay, we eagerly immersed ourselves in the city’s delights, making the most of the complimentary walking tour and invigorating boat ride organized by Viking River Cruises. Allow me to share a glimpse of what awaits you on your visit to Zürich.

Read more about the 12 day river cruise here.

Zürich Scenery

Breathtaking scenery unfurls in every direction in Zürich. Whether it be the grandeur of the architectural masterpieces or the vibrant façades of historical buildings, the snow-capped Swiss Alps serving as a backdrop or the enchanting cobblestone streets that wound their way through the city, there is no shortage of picturesque moments that will prompt your camera to work overtime.

Zürich is an incredible city to explore on foot. Without even realizing it, we covered an impressive seven miles in a single day, diligently recorded by our trusty Fitbit. Such was the pleasure derived from our stroll that the concept of distance faded away, leaving us fully engrossed in the awe-inspiring ambiance that unfolded at every turn.

The Food in Zürich

Switzerland is renowned for its exquisite culinary offerings, with one of my personal favorites being cheese. Everywhere you go, you’ll encounter a plethora of exotic cheese choices. During my visit, indulging in authentic Swiss cheese fondue at the Swiss Chuchi Restaurant , nestled in the heart of the old town, was a must for me and my companion Eddie.

We opted for the traditional recipe, combining Vaudois cheese, white wine, cherry liquor, and garlic, resulting in a gastronomic delight that exceeded all expectations.

Another popular cheese delicacy in Zürich is raclette, which has recently gained popularity even in American eateries. While exploring the town, we noticed numerous raclette shops scattered around, its tantalizing aroma captivating our senses well before catching sight of it.

It’s worth noting that dining in Zürich can be quite costly. Simple meals often came with a hefty price tag of $24, and even a small bottled soda would cost between $4 and $7 at our hotel. Surprisingly, beer turned out to be more economical than both water and soda.

However, in the old town, we stumbled upon a gem called Blue Monkey —a delightful Thai restaurant boasting chic decor and offering a lunch buffet priced at $26 per person. I wholeheartedly recommend this establishment for an exquisite culinary experience.

Overall, Switzerland’s gastronomic offerings, particularly its cheese creations, exceeded all expectations, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my culinary adventure in this beautiful country.

Parade Square

Eddie and I thoroughly enjoyed strolling through Paradeplatz (Parade Square) located in downtown Zürich. This upscale district is renowned for its exceptional shopping opportunities and the chance to observe people in action.

Parade Square places fashion and accessories at center stage, while home accents come in a close second.

If you happen to be staying outside the downtown area, fret not as getting there is incredibly convenient via the tram system. Coming from someone who seldom relies on public transportation, I can attest to its ease of use.

Tram stations provide instructions in English and accept credit cards. They are maintained well, operate efficiently, and offer a superb means of traversing Zürich. As you journey through the city, do observe the dignified architecture and stunning floral displays that grace its streets.

Lake Zürich

During our Viking River post-cruise excursion, we had the pleasure of embarking on a delightful boat ride around the picturesque Lake Zurich. The boat tour commences from Bürkliplatz and extends for approximately 90 minutes.

With both indoor and outdoor seating options, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of the serene lake and majestic, snow-capped mountains.

Our route led us to the charming medieval town of Rapperswil, featuring a captivating 12th-century castle gracefully perched on a hillside across the lake. If desired, passengers had the flexibility to disembark in Rapperswil and catch a later boat back into town.

Undoubtedly, the boat ride boasts exceptional scenery, allowing guests to relish the rejuvenating fresh air. Moreover, this memorable experience came at no cost for Viking River Cruise guests, ensuring that you seize the opportunity to partake in it.

Our Zürich Hotel

During our Viking River Cruise, we had the pleasure of being accommodated at the Sheraton Zürich Hotel , an elegant and sophisticated establishment situated in a cosmopolitan district. The rooms provide a comfortable sitting area, heavenly beds, an ergonomic desk and work area, a mini-fridge, and a refreshing shower, ensuring a pleasant stay.

To the delight of cruise ship guests, Viking offers a complimentary breakfast in a private space at the hotel, which proved to be a significant money-saving opportunity. Moreover, the Sheraton Hotel’s convenient location near the Toni-Areal tram station opens up a plethora of possibilities for exploring the city.

Zürich, Switzerland: One for the Books!

Zürich itself is known for its stunning scenery, making it a lovely city to visit. As part of Switzerland, a truly breathtaking country with an abundance of attractions, Zürich stands out as my favorite city thus far.
