When it’s time for some shade, there is plenty of indoor fun to be had on Carnival Sunrise as well.

There’s no place on earth like a comedy club. On Carnival Sunrise, it’s even better. Get ready for sidesplitting laughs and tell-it-like-it-is comedy at Punchliner Comedy Club . When the clock strikes cocktail hour, head to the RedFrog Pub ® to make some new friends. Enjoy light bites (Caribbean fare) in a laid-back atmosphere. You might even catch some live music or a game of foosball. Speaking of eating and drinking, give in to the sweet desire of ice cream, candy, and other treats. The iconic red and white checkered tablecloth in your neighborhood Italian trattoria means you’re in for a certain kind of dining experience. At a table such as this, who’s gathered around is just as important as what’s being served, and we see these as the two halves of the experience at Cucina del Capitano. Atop our tablecloth you’ll enjoy courses of dishes — antipasti, entrées, pasta and desserts — inspired by our Italian captains’ and officers’ childhoods. It’s all served famiglia-style, because we know that sharing tales of your day’s adventures is best with large plates and great company. Speaking of which, the walls are not only adorned with old snapshots from the crew’s family albums, but you might even find the captain dining at his own table in the corner… all evidence that the rustic Italian country-home atmosphere you see is no façade. Tip: Reservations aren’t required, but to get the best seating and times, we recommend making a reservation. You can make one online after booking your cruise.

Your face is the first thing the world sees, and while a nice smile can make a world of difference, one of the best ways to put a smile on your face is with a nice, refreshing facial. Of course, there’s more to it than just feeling great… post-facial, your rejuvenated skin will also be looking its best, so there’s definitely substance behind the good looks you’ll be catching glimpses of in all the mirrors you pass. Camp Ocean

The little ones can enjoy the best parts of summer camp, year-round aboard their Carnival cruise. At Camp Ocean kids will have a blast in supervised, age-based groups and give each a cool marine-life label: Penguins (2 to 5 years), Stingrays (6 to 8 years) and Sharks (9 to 11 years). Together with their group they’ll enjoy tons of fun-filled, age-appropriate activities like arts and crafts, songs, games, toys, dancing, movies and video games. When it’s mealtime, kids eat together and get their own menus with back-on-land faves like mac & cheese, chicken nuggets and more. The whole time, our experienced counselors will be there to make sure everyone in these small groups has an amazing time. Plus, when the sun goes down it’s Night Owls time — fees apply, but kids get to stay up late having fun while their parents also enjoy themselves well into the night.

Pool

Ah, imagine a perfect day out on the links, the golfer's zen of the ball, the hole and nothing in between but well-manicured fairway... plus one cactus, a treasure chest... and wait, is that a windmill in the way? Just who designed this course anyway? Whoever it was, they had one thing in mind — maximum fun for mini-golfers, big and small! That's precisely why you'll find a course on every Carnival ship, where you can hit the holes and take in everything you’d expect, like the sights and the sounds... plus the seagulls.

Did we mention that on SkyCourse you'll be safely strapped in, emboldening you to take on the kinds of challenges you may not normally feel up to? Scream for the cool stuff? Visit the ice cream counter at the Cherry On Top shops aboard Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon for a signature ice cream creation, or build your own with tons of mix-ins and topping options. And if you get the urge to eat ice cream with your hands, we won’t judge… we’ll just suggest one of our all-new ice cream cookie sandwiches. We’ll build you one by hand, and stuff it full of whatever ice cream and toppings you scream for.

Circle

What does the C in Circle “C” stand for? Well… how about “cruise,” “chill” and “connect”? (Just to name a few, of course.) It’s the onboard spot where teens ages 12 to 14 go to hang out, meet new friends, and enjoy some pretty awesome activities. Like what? Think dance parties, games, outdoor movies and more, some in the exclusive Circle “C” lounge and others around the ship. These are all supervised by the friendly and fun-loving counselors who make sure teens have the best vacation ever.

Club O2

Your parents deserve a nice vacation… but then again, so do you. So let’s let them go do their thing while you do yours. Where to? Club O2. Hang out doing stuff like watching movies, listening to music from this decade, playing sports and video games, joining karaoke jam sessions… maybe even attending Carnival’s version of prom, all with other high schoolers ages 15 to 17.

Salon

A trip to the salon is an opportunity to relax, to chat with others, to focus on yourself. It’s about more than just getting your hair or nails done… but it’s definitely about getting your hair or nails done! Even though you’re on vacation, you won’t have to settle for anything less than the salon style you’re used to back on land. And these good looks go beyond the usual — we even offer services like teeth whitening… great for taking those ‘I’m on vacation and I’m looking great!’ smiles to the next level.

Cloud 9 Spa

Cloud 9 Spa

Sometimes you just need to get away… from all that vacation. We know — sitting at home, it’s hard to imagine that, but trust us — it’s really, really nice to have a place to unwind from the day’s excitement. Escape to a world designed, from the ground up, for relaxation. Cloud 9 Spa staff are masters (or, maybe more like artists) trained in the craft of simply helping you chill. What’s their secret? Massages, facials, body wraps, thermal suites and more — plus, on certain ships, the amazing Thalassotherapy Pool — these are the tools of the trade. And the trade is ultimate relaxation. Note: The Cloud 9 Spa Thalassotherapy Pool is only available on Carnival Dream, Carnival Breeze, Carnival Magic and Carnival Splendor.

Fitness Center

Fitness Center

We have some bad news for you — your ship has a gym. In other words, there’s no excuse for leaving your fitness routine back on land. That’s great news, however, for your body, which will definitely benefit from all the extra energy that vacationing pumps directly into you. And let’s not forget the extra time you’ll have, since you won’t be waking up and spending most of the day at the office or anything like that. If those were some of your go-to excuses, we’re sorry, but we all know this is important. Why not treat yourself to some of our fitness classes — you might even have a little fun while you do something great for yourself!

Sauna

Cruising always feels good, but it doesn’t usually — ooh, right there. Right where? Sorry, we’re at the onboard spa, where they do these amazing massages by hand. But they don’t just stop there — they’ve got tools to enhance the benefits too. Select from different hands-on experiences featuring seaweed for detox, herbal poultice for energy, bamboo for deep tissue penetration and hot stones for — ahhh — for perfection. We know you’re all about feeling good, and so are these massages.

Jogging Track

Jogging may not immediately come to mind when you think of things to do at sea, but it probably should. You don’t have to walk on water, you just have to get on a Carnival cruise. After all, if you’re going to jog, you’d be hard-pressed to find a place to do it with a more scenic view, or a more refreshing breeze — both of these are available in abundance when you go for an open-air jog on the upper-deck. Jogging tracks are available on almost all Carnival ships, and are even padded for long-distance comfort.

Carnival Sunrise Itineraries

Carnival sunrise review, review of carnival sunrise.

The 1999-built/2013-reconstructed Carnival Sunrise cruise ship was built as "Carnival Triumph" and inaugurated on October 30, 1999. After a major refurbishment in 2013 ( Fun Ship 2.0 ), the liner received a second emergency backup generator and top-notch fire detection technology. The Triumph was also re-decorated; with added new bars, lounges and entertainment options. As vessel class, Carnival Triumph is second of all three Destiny-class sisterships - together with Destiny-Sunshine and Victory-Radiance .

The vessel (IMO number 9138850) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308045000) and registered in Nassau .

IMPORTANT : Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Carnival Sunrise was taken out of service in 2020-2021, and planned to restart cruises on March 3, 2022 (2-night itinerary out of PortMiami to Nassau Bahamas ).

  • A total of 92x Carnival Sunrise cruises scheduled for the period between November 5, 2020, and April 30, 2022, were canceled. The canceled program was based on homeporting in Fort Lauderdale (Nov 2020 - May 2021) and Miami (May 2021 - Apr 2022).
  • The canceled Fort Lauderdale cruise schedule included roundtrips to Western Caribbean (5-day Ocho Rios Jamaica and Grand Cayman), Bahamas (4-day Half Moon Cay and Nassau), Eastern Caribbean (5-day Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, Nassau) plus a 6-day Eastern Caribbean itinerary visiting Amber Cove, Grand Turk Island and Half Moon Cay.
  • The canceled Miami cruise schedule included roundtrips to Eastern Caribbean (8-day Half Moon Cay, St Thomas USVI, San Juan Puerto Rico, Amber Cove Dominican Rep), Eastern Caribbean (7-day Grand Turk, San Juan Puerto Rico, St Thomas USVI, Amber Cove), Eastern Caribbean (6-day Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, Amber Cove), Eastern Caribbean (5-day Grand Turk, Princess Cays, Nassau), Southern Caribbean (8-day Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, Aruba, Curacao), Western Caribbean (7-day Grand Cayman, Roatan, Belize City, Cozumel).

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

Carnival Sunrise cruise ship (Carnival Triumph)

The 3000-passenger ship Carnival Triumph's theme was ”Great Cities of the World”. In 2019 (March-April) the ship entered drydock for ~USD 200 million refurbishment , after which it was renamed "Carnival Sunrise". The refitted liner was transformed into Sunshine-Class vessel - having the same facilities and amenities as the sistership Carnival Sunshine (former Carnival Destiny, refitted in 2013 for USD 155 million).

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Sunrise staterooms (1492 total, in 32 categories) include 54 Suites, 522 Balcony, 326 Oceanview and 611 Inside cabins, most of which are sized 185 ft2 / 17 m2. CCL Sunrise ship also has 89 Cloud 9 Spa cabins and 46 wheelchair-accessible cabins. Most cabin balconies are sized 35 ft2 / 3 m2. The largest are the Captain’s Suites (500 ft2 / 46 m2 plus 150 ft2 / 14 m2 terrace) accommodating up to 5 passengers.

The boat has 13 passenger decks , of which 10 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Carnival Sunrise offers many of the Fun Ship 2.0 additions in terms of dining - Guy's Burger Joint, Cucina del Capitano, BlueIguana Cantina. The line made a few adjustments to the existing venues and also added the outstanding specialty restaurant, Chopsticks. There are two Main Dining Rooms onboard the Sunrise: Sunset, at the midship, and double-deck Sunrise located aft. The complimentary Punchliner Comedy Brunch, which is a sea day exclusive, features 5-minute teasers every hour on the hour from 9 am to 1:30 pm.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Carnival made a heavy investment in lights and sound for its shows on Carnival Breeze and has taken a step further on Sunrise. An ultra-HD graphics package is beamed onto a vast screen and the performers use it as a backdrop of their show. A number of themed shows take place in ship's Liquid Lounge, which doubles as the 800-seat main Theater. Because the room was initially designed as a theater with two stories, it's impossible to feature an intimate atmosphere.

The Sunrise ship offers a complete list of activities and entertainment for each age group and taste - from ballroom scene dancing, classical music concerts, tea time and art auctions to a hairy chest and knobby knees contests, bingo, and karaoke.

In comparison to Carnival Sunshine, Sunrise has smaller-sized WaterWorks located midship (aft on Sunshine).

Carnival Sunshine WaterWorks

Sunrise also lacks SkyCourse (rope course adjacent to WaterWorks).

Carnival Sunrise Wiki

Triumph was Carnival's first-ever liner with mobile phone systems ("Cellular At Sea" by Wireless Maritime Services). This partnership (between AT&T and MTN Sat / Maritime Telecommunications Network) allowed passengers to use their cell phones at sea to call directly at any time.

The Fincantieri Monfalcone -built Carnival Triumph was christened by godmother Madeleine Arison - wife of Micky Arison (Carnival Corporation's Chairman). This is a Post-Panamax vessel (can't pass through Panama Canal ), launched on July 1 and with its inaugural cruise/maiden voyage on October 30, 1999. Th

e interior design theme is "Great Cities of the World".

Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade  was done in 2013.

Fun fact is that this Carnival ship had a namesake - the 2017-launched "MOL Triumph". The vessel is among the world's largest boxships/container carriers (capacity 20170 TEUs) and is operated by MOL Shipping .

Sunrise ship's godmother is Kelly Arison - daughter of Micky Arison. The vessel's christening ceremony was on May 23, 2019, held at Manhattan Cruise Passenger Terminal in Port NYC New York . The naming ceremony featured a 4-ft (1,2-m) high champagne bottle sculpture (filled with confetti) which was custom-made by Romero Britto (1963-born Brazilian artist).

Sunrise ship's Captains are Bruno Palomba (during the drydock) and Isidoro Renda (after the launch). Captain Isidoro Renda (Italian, Naples graduate) is with Carnival since 2010 (starting as Second Officer) and Captain since 2016. Its previous service was with TIRRENIA Ferries and MSC Cruises . Ship's other officers include Mauro Fabbrini (Chief Engineer), Nicola Tonelli (Chief Engineer), and Caroline Bourke (Hotel Director).

Carnival Sunrise refurbishment 2024 review

The vessel's first drydocking (as Carnival Sunrise) was in 2022, conducted in February-March 2024, at Navantia Cadiz. The ship left Miami on Feb 1st and arrived in Cadiz on Feb 10th.

The 2-week drydocking project was for general maintenance works (technical overhaul, classification inspections, minor steel works), indoor renovation works, as well as hull cleaning/painting, including the addition of CCL's new hull livery (red-white-blue).

Refurbishment/renovations received all public areas (facilities and venues) as well as all passenger staterooms.

During the drydocking was also added CCL's new signature lounge the Heroes Tribute Bar.

Carnival Triumph-Sunrise ship conversion 2019 refurbishment review

My Carnival Sunrise Cruise Review (to Bahamas and Grand Turk)

So, my Carnival Sunrise Review. I’ve just spent 5 nights on board the Carnival Sunrise, going from Fort Lauderdale to Princess Cays and Nassau in the Bahamas, and Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos.

For a quick review of the Carnival Sunrise, and a look around the ship, you can check out my cruise video below. But to read all about it, carry on.

Watch my review of the Carnival Sunrise Cruise to the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos

The Carnival Sunrise has just had a $200 million transformation with all-new staterooms, dining venues and entertainment innovations.

Review of the Carnival Sunrise

So, I’ll take my Carnival Sunrise review topic by topic.

First up, most importantly , the food…

Restaurants on the Carnival Sunrise

Carnival Sunrise review

There are 11 restaurants on the Carnival Sunrise cruise ship.

– Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que*

– Guy’s Burger Joint*

– Sunshine Restaurant

– Radiance Restaurant*

– Pizzeria del Capitano*

– Cucina del Capitano

– The Steakhouse

– Seafood Shack

– BlueIguana Cantina

– the Deli*

– Bonsai Sushi

I ate at all the ones with stars. It was the Guy’s Burger Join that stood out to me though – the fries they served were just incredible. If you want to bring something home-cooked or from the local bakeries, check out the list of  foods and beverages you can bring on Carnival cruise .

Carnival Sunrise Review

In the evenings we went to the Radiance Restaurant twice, for a sit down meal. They got up and danced to Uptown Funk both nights, really getting the diners going. Each night you’d order your table through the Carnival app (download before embarking). The two times we ordered, we pretty much got a table straight away.

Carnival Sunrise review

It was nice to sit down and have the food bought to you, rather than a buffet, but I felt the food was better at the other restaurants we tried.

Totally worth an extra mention, was the BBQ Smokehouse. Vegetarians avoid – the meat was just incredible. So much choice as well, from all the greats – chicken, beef, pork and some tasty sides too.

There was also 24/7 ice cream for you to enjoy anytime you wanted. Oh, and popcorn for the films. On our day in Princess Cays, they also put on a BBQ on the beach.

You are NOT going to go hungry on the Carnival Sunrise!

Rooms on the Carnival Sunrise

Our room was on level 2, in an outside room with a window, but no balcony. I’ve been on two cruises before and this totally showed me the importance of having a balcony – if you can afford it, it really does add to the experience.

On board the Carnival Sunrise

We didn’t actually spend that much time in the room though, obviously to sleep but apart from that, we were out and about.

In our room we had a good sized bathroom, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space to hang things, a sofa which could be a bed, a double bed (two singles together) and a TV with access to on demand films.

We also had a maid who was there for anything we needed.

Evening entertainment on the Carnival Sunrise

The evening entertainment on the Carnival Sunrise was a choice of a comedian, a show, a party or a film on the top deck.

Films on the Carnival Sunrise

We went to see the Flying Scotsman show, featuring the ship’s Scottish captain Christopher Williams, doing his stand up and musical routine. We went on the last night and he was really funny, and the room was packed. A testament to his friendship with as many people as possible on board.

Unfortunately thanks to the jetlag we were never awake long enough for the evening parties – but they were neon / 80s themed and white themed and we saw people having fun getting ready for them.

Carnival sunrise review shows

We went to watch two of the Carnival Sunrise shows. We saw a 20s themed pop music show and a Halloween style one. It was a great way to end the day in the theatre and you could order drinks to your seat.

Violins on the Carnival Sunrise

Each day a ship’s itinerary would be posted under the door, letting you know all about what was going on that day on the ship. If you’re going on the Carnival Sunrise keep an eye out for that as it will help you plan your day.

Excursions on the Carnival Sunrise Cruise

In each port there were excursions to choose from, which could be booked before the cruise, on the cruise, or on the day. Obviously the popular ones sell out first.

We found the excursions to be pretty expensive, and so only ended up doing one.

excursions on the carnival sunrise

On Princess Cays we joined the bike excursion for $29.99 (no tax was added). After a late start we cycled about a mile in total, and stopped at the entrance to Princess Cays, at an old church, and at a beach. Our guide told us a little about the area, and then we cycled back again.

Grand Turk adventures Carnival Cruise

Other excursions on Grand Turk, Princess Cays and Nassau include catamaran trips, beach parties, animal encounters and walking tours. There are so many excursions to choose from so I’d advise you to plan before you go.

You can find the list of activities on the Carnival cruise website.

Boarding and disembarking the Carnival Cruise

boarding the Carnival sunrise

Compared to the other two cruises I’ve done I was pretty impressed with the boarding and disembarking process on the Carnival Sunrise. It took us about 20 minutes to board, and 10 to disembark.

getting on the Carnival sunrise

We actually turned up to the cruise earlier than our time and were still allowed on the ship, but had to wait to get in our room. This was totally fine as we just hit the burger bar and went for a wander around.

Day activities on the Carnival Sunrise

Obviously you want to know what’s on board for your days at sea on the Carnival Sunrise. There’s a whole plan of activities, from bingo (we tried, we failed), to trivia quizzes (we got 17/20) and pool parties. There’s also a casino, an amusement arcade, shops and a coffee shop with cakes too.

Sauna on the Carnival Surnise

You can buy access to the Cloud 9 Spa adults only retreat. We were given a tour on the first day and told passes were very limited. In here you’ll have an amazing view out the front of the ship from heated seats, steam rooms, saunas, and a range of access to treatment rooms (at extra cost).

Carnival Sunrise retreat

There’s also the adults only area at the back of the ship. There’s a pool here, a bar, more towels and loads of nice cushty loungers to sun bathe on. It was always busy though, so you need to be up early to bag yourself a seat.

bingo Carnival Sunrise

There’s a whole adventure sports area upstairs, with a ropes course, a crazy golf course, a fusball table and a running track too.

You won’t be bored!

Extra expenses on the Carnival Sunrise

The price you pay on the Carnival Sunrise is for your room and the six included restaurants – there are lots of other opportunities to spend money though!

Party on the Carnival Sunrise

When you get on lanyards are $12.99 (bring your own), the excursions start from $29.99, and some of the a la carte restaurants cost extra.

You can buy a drinks package for $56.95 per day. This must be bought for the whole cruise, you can’t just buy a day.

Obviously to play bingo ($30+), the arcade machines ($2+) and at the casinos cost extra too.

Remember, as an American organisation, these prices also have tax added on top.

carnival sunrise ship tour

Tips are $12.95 per day per person, which go to the behind the scenes staff. Then with every drink you’ll also be charged an 18% gratuity, which will be added to your account, and then there’s the option for an additional gratuity on top.

That money goes to the service staff.

Bear in mind that this can all add up.

Top tips for the Carnival Sunrise

Sunrise on the Carnival Sunrise

1. Avoid going to guest services on day one, as you’d expect queues can be very long – I queued for over an hour.

2. Go to the front of the ship for your fresh eggs and omelette for breakfast – queues are crazy in the centre. Then you can eat outside and by the pool too.

3. Make sure you take the allotted 12 cans of coke you’re allowed, and bottle of wine per person, on the ship, yourself. I made the mistake of putting them in my luggage and had them taken off me (I talked to guest services and got them back 48 hours later).

4. Get up for the sunrise, it’s incredible. Don’t waste your jet lag in bed. It’s not called the Carnival Sunrise for nothing!

5. Relax and watch the band at the bar on Princess Cays, it was free and one of my favourite experiences on the cruise.

6. You need to keep your Carnival Sunrise card on you at all times so it’s a good idea to bring a lanyard to keep the card safe and accessible, so you don’t have to buy one.

7. Always take your passport off the ship – just in case.

8. Take a reusable water bottle so you can fill up from the free water and juice machines as you like.

Carnival Sunrise Review

carnival sunrise review

We had a great time on the Carnival Sunrise. I’m glad we did our own thing on the shore days, it meant we got to explore more of the islands, and made it more relaxing. I really enjoyed the restaurants and there was a nice atmosphere on the ship. I loved just sitting in the hot tubs chatting with the other holidaymakers.

If you have any questions about this Carnival Sunrise review, just let me know in the comments below!

Best Carnival cruise ships: Here’s which ship you should sail, based on your travel style

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Choosing a Carnival cruise ship is no simple task, especially if you’re new to cruising. As one of the largest cruise brands in the world, Carnival Cruise Line has more than two dozen vessels in its fleet, offering everything from megaship adventures to smaller-ship experiences. Many variables — price, embarkation dates, travel companions, ship size and amenities, and destination — can shape the way you make your choice.

So, what is the best Carnival cruise ship? Here are my picks for the top options in several categories.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Mardi Gras: Best Carnival cruise ship for families

The best Carnival cruise ship for kids is undoubtedly Mardi Gras . Not only is it one of Carnival’s newest vessels, but it’s also one of the largest, and it has tons of activities to keep families with children busy.

At the expansive kids club, daily programming includes scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, and video games. The club draws in young cruisers and gives them space to make friends and play with peers. Beyond the dedicated kids facilities, the ship has a massive arcade and many top-deck diversions. One of these is the Ultimate Playground — a space encompassing a ropes course, waterslides and Bolt, the first-ever roller coaster at sea . (Note that the arcade and Bolt cost extra.)

Related: The 5 best cruise lines for families

Mardi Gras is full of fantastic family-friendly dining, including the line’s Dr. Seuss-themed Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast (for a small fee). The ship also includes pizza, soft-serve ice cream, Shaq’s fried chicken and Guy Fieri burgers in its fares. Even the pickiest of eaters will be satisfied. Kids can order off special menus in the complimentary main dining rooms and join in their waiters’ rollicking dance performances just when they start to get antsy sitting still.

The ship also does a nice job of accommodating families of all sizes and budgets. Many of Mardi Gras’ standard cabins sleep at least four people, and the ship offers connecting cabins.

Its Family Harbor staterooms provide access to a special family lounge area with TVs, sitting areas and internet stations. Breakfast is offered there each morning, and snacks and drinks — including free soda — are provided throughout the day. So, you never have to go far when the kids need a snack. Cabins in the Family Harbor category feature a nautical theme, plenty of storage and space to sleep at least four people.

Mardi Gras’ new sister ship, Carnival Celebration, is also a fantastic option in this category, offering a nearly identical experience (with just a few changes in the names and themes of specific venues).

Carnival Horizon: Best ship for luxury lovers

Let’s be clear: Carnival is not a luxury cruise line, nor does it offer huge suites on most ships. The suites it has are smaller than most other brands’ high-end accommodations, and they do not include amenities like butler service.

With that in mind, one ship that offers slightly more exclusive options is Carnival Horizon — the second vessel in Carnival’s three-ship Vista class. It offers a top-deck, adults-only Serenity sun deck area; an extensive menu of spa treatments, salon services and fitness classes at the onboard Cloud 9 Spa; and a handful of upmarket cabin offerings.

If you’re into wellness, relaxation and self-care, check out the spa and fitness center’s manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, teeth whitening treatments, acupuncture, anti-wrinkle procedures, state-of-the-art cycling classes, thermal suite, hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms for a fee. For digs that include pampering, try a Cloud 9 Spa cabin to receive extras like complimentary thermal suite access and two free yoga or Pilates classes.

Related: The 8 best cruise lines for elegance and exclusivity

If exclusive stateroom enclaves are what you seek, you’ll want to book one of the ship’s Havana Cabana cabins. They come in several varieties, from 185-square-foot insides to Havana Suites, which offer 260 square feet of interior space (with a dividing wall to separate sleeping and living areas), plus a 100-square-foot patio area with loungers and a hammock. All Havana Cabana cruisers get access to an exclusive lanai and pool deck. With a suite booking, you’ll also receive priority embarkation and disembarkation.

If a traditional suite is more your style, consider a Grand Suite, which includes priority embarkation, disembarkation and dining times, as well as access to the Havana pool area. Note, however, that Grand Suites run only 345 square feet with 85-square-foot balconies — disappointing when you consider some of Royal Caribbean’s largest rooms are nearly five times that size.

The only ships on which you’ll find larger accommodations are the line’s newest: Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee, all of which house Presidential Suites. Those accommodations offer 1,120 square feet of space with 600-square-foot balconies and separate living and sleeping areas. However, the ships — part of the line’s Excel Class — are so large and attract so many families that I’ve ruled them out as the most luxurious.

Carnival Conquest: Best ship for budget travelers

If you’re on a budget and simply looking for one of the cheapest Carnival cruise ships, a solid bet is Carnival Conquest. It offers Bahamas and Caribbean voyages of three to five nights. Think of it this way: The shorter the cruise , the less expensive it will be.

Plus, it sails from Miami, one of the world’s largest cruise hubs. More ships leaving from a specific port means more competition, which can drive prices lower.

Related: The 8 classes of Carnival ships, explained

Carnival Conquest is one of the line’s oldest ships, but it’s also a ton of fun. Because short sailings tend to attract a more lively crowd, passengers can expect lots of dancing, socializing and late nights at Henri’s Dance Club. During the day, passengers enjoy spending time around the pool and grabbing free burgers from Guy’s Burger Joint.

It’s also one of the few vessels left in the fleet that still features jaw-dropping interiors designed by renowned architect Joe Farcus, who made Carnival synonymous with quirky patterns, bright colors and neon lights.

At the time of publication, prices started from $47 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Carnival Sunrise: Best Carnival cruise ship for singles

Unfortunately, Carnival has been slow to adopt solo cabins, meaning that no ships in its fleet offer accommodations for one.

Because all staterooms are designed for double occupancy, it’s generally a rule that a person traveling alone must pay both fares. This means they would pay twice as much per person as two people sharing a room.

Related: The best cruise ships for solo travelers

In order to make the single supplement as affordable as possible, solo Carnival cruisers will want to balance finding an inexpensive vessel with choosing one that sails short itineraries. They’ll also probably want one that’s a bit livelier (read: not the oldest in the fleet).

A great contender for the title of best Carnival ship for singles is Carnival Sunrise. Formerly Carnival Triumph, the ship was completely gutted, overhauled and renamed in 2019. Although it originally debuted in 1999, it feels fresh and nearly new. It offers the line’s signature Serenity adults-only sun deck, RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and a slew of lounges, nightclubs and daily activities.

Combine that with short, affordable voyages from Miami, and you can sail to the Bahamas or Caribbean for four or five nights from as little as $104 per night if you’re solo. Short sailings also tend to draw a more fun-loving, social crowd. So, if your goal is to mingle and potentially meet other solo cruisers, you stand a good chance on Carnival Sunrise.

Carnival Pride: Best ship for retirees

Retired travelers have all the time in the world to take longer cruises, which generally allow them to visit more far-flung locales. Those trips can come with a substantial price tag, which is why, as a budget option, Carnival is such a great choice.

In particular, Carnival Pride’s voyages consist of nine- and 12-night itineraries to the Baltic, British Isles and Iceland on a regular cadence. Longer voyages mean more time to explore but also fewer children and less of a frat party vibe. (Take note if you’re thinking of bringing your grandkids.)

Related: The 7 best cruises for seniors who love to travel

Carnival Pride is one of the oldest ships sailing for Carnival. That actually works in its favor if you’re a retiree who enjoys smaller ships and vintage design — in this case, more artwork and decor by Farcus.

In addition to a comedy club and an onboard spa, the ship also offers an adults-only sun deck, several bars and lounges, and plenty of dining options and daily activities to stave off boredom on longer voyages.

Bottom line

So, which Carnival cruise ship is the best? It all depends on your specific preferences. Whether you’re searching for an inexpensive vacation, a family-friendly vessel or a ship that will take you on a longer voyage to Europe, there’s a Carnival cruise to fit your taste and budget.

Carnival Sunrise Conversion Marks Five Years

  • April 23, 2024

Carnival Sunrise

The Carnival Sunrise conversion is marking five years this month. The $200-million project took place in Spain and saw the Carnival Cruise Line ship essentially being rebuilt.

As part of the bow-to-stern makeover project, the former Carnival Triumph received all-new public areas, as well as additional cabins and new features.

The two-month-long refit took place at the Navantia shipyard in Cádiz, Spain, and also included upgrades to the ship’s technical systems.

Among the new features added were new dining options, such as Seafood Shack and Bonsai Sushi, a new ropes course, and a reinvented atrium.

While all of the ship’s cabins were redecorated with an island-inspired look, over 50 staterooms were added to different parts of the vessel.

Following the work, the Carnival Sunrise debuted on April 29, 2019. On that day, the 2,984-guest vessel kicked off a series of five- to seven-day voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas departing from Norfolk.

The Sunrise then repositioned to New York City for a summer program that included four- to 14-night cruises to Bermuda, Canada & New England, and the Caribbean.

In October 2019, the vessel moved to Fort Lauderdale for a series of four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

After repositioning to Miami in 2021, the ship continued to offer similar itineraries with a schedule that includes four- and five-night cruises to destinations like Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Nassau, the Bahamas.

Part of Carnival Cruise Line’s Destiny Class, the Carnival Sunrise originally entered service in 1999 as the Carnival Triumph.

Its two sister ships, the former Carnival Destiny and the former Carnival Victory, also underwent similar refurbishments over the years.

The 1996-built Destiny became the Carnival Sunshine in 2013 , while the 2000-built Victory emerged as the Carnival Radiance in 2021 .

Florence in California: Carnival launches new Italian-style cruise ship

carnival sunrise ship tour

Carnival Cruise Line is bringing a touch of Italy to Southern California.

The line launched Carnival Firenze, inspired by its namesake city, this week. The vessel sailed its maiden voyage from its Long Beach homeport on Thursday.

“We carry more guests than any other cruise line from California, and now this ship is giving us the opportunity to offer more fun to more people sailing from Long Beach,” Christine Duffy, the line’s president, said in a news release . “The recipe combining this ship’s beautiful Italian theming with the familiarity of our friendly team’s hospitality is, in a word, perfecto!”

The ship is the second in the Carnival Fun Italian Style concept after sister ship Carnival Venezia joined the fleet last summer. Both were originally part of Costa Cruises – also owned by parent company Carnival Corp. – before being rehomed.

Where will Carnival Firenze sail?

The roughly 5,000-guest ship will offer Baja Mexico and Mexican Riviera cruises ranging from three to seven days. Stops include destinations like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Catalina Island.

What can guests expect on board?

Built in 2020, Firenze was refurbished earlier this year to add Carnival-specific touches. Those include staple venues like the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse and JavaBlue Cafe.

But the line leans into the ship’s Italian motif. The ship’s atrium was designed with Florence’s Piazza del Duomo in mind and the Lido deck takes influence from the Italian Riviera. There’s even a replica of Michelangelo’s David on board that was previously on Carnival Pride (the real sculpture is located in Florence’s Accademia Gallery).

The theme extends to the food and drink options, with eateries like Italian specialty restaurant Il Viaggio, Mexican-Italian fusion venue Tomodoro and La Strada Grill, serving Italian street food. Frizzante specializes in bubbly drinks, and passengers can sip craft cocktails and Italian coffee at Amari.

Other features include the WaterWorks water park and Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.

How long should I take a cruise?: Here's how short and long cruises compare

How much does Carnival Firenze cost?

Prices vary based on sailing date and other factors, but a five-day Mexican Riviera cruise departing on May 30 currently starts at $409 per person based on double occupancy, according to Carnival’s website . The fare includes much of the food on the ship, drinks like regular coffee and iced tea and more.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Things To Do

The revamped Carnival Glory went through a 21-day refurbishment ahead of its arrival to Port Canaveral. (Courtesy/Carnival Cruise Line)

Carnival Cruise Line has revamped its Carnival Glory cruise ship with new features before it heads to its new home at Port Canaveral.

The 110,000-gross-ton ship is taking on three- and four-night Bahamas sailings from the port, joining three other Carnival ships. Built in 2003, the ship has a 2,980-guest passenger capacity based on double occupancy.

It recently came out of a 21-day dry dock at the Navantia shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, receiving some enhancements found on other Carnival ships.

Carnival Glory was given a version of the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge during its 2024 dry dock. (Courtesy/Carnival Cruise Line)

Changes include a new casino layout, including a nonsmoking area, and a Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge that pays deference to military veterans and active-duty service members, taking over the SkyBox Sports Bar. Also added were a Dreams Photography Studio and upgrades within the spa.

When it debuted more than 20 years ago, Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, was named its godmother. Its space-themed pedigree extends to enhancements added to the youth area Camp Ocean, which now has a large video wall for its Space Cruisers program. Its curriculum was developed in partnership with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Also updated is the video arcade and redubbed The Warehouse.

carnival sunrise ship tour

The refurb also removed the aft-pool Sky Dome, while the ship received routine hotel maintenance, cosmetic enhancements, ADA compliant updates in public areas and select staterooms including the addition of Ambulatory Accessible staterooms.

Stateroom balconies were also redone with new windows and doors and every stateroom had new LED lighting and bathroom nightlights added.

The ship sailed out of Barcelona on Thursday for a 14-night transatlantic voyage to Port Canaveral.

Its first sailing from Florida will be May 2. It joins Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista and Carnival’s Mardi Gras calling the Orlando-area port home.

Leaving is Carnival Liberty, which is moving to New Orleans.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said Carnival Glory received an updated hull paint scheme during the 2024 dry dock. It had its hull paint scheme updated in 2021.
