In Spain you’ll find DK Top 10 guides for Madrid and Barcelona . Barcelona & Madrid City Guides $0.99 each These apps include information for Spain’s two biggest cities, Barcelona and Madrid . You’ll get information about accommodation, restaurants, sightseeing, transportation, shopping, nightlife, and more. 100 Best Places to Go – Spain $0.99 This app has what one guide writer considers the “100 most fascinating tourist destinations” in Spain, including information about where it’s located, a description of what’s there, and some photos. Spain World Travel $0.99 This app covers the whole country of Spain, so it’s good for overall travel information for the country, and also has travel information for several cities, including attractions, offline maps, and travel tips. Spain Tourist Guide $1.99 This is another country-wide app, but this one seems to be more focused on the whole country rather than having information on specific cities. In this one you’ll find information about Spain’s history, weather, and visa info, along with how to get around the country, when to go, what to see, and where to stay. iSpain FREE There are 10 city guides in this app, and it also includes tools like a currency converter and translator. It’s “GPS-powered,” meaning you’ll have to have that feature on your iPhone for much of it to work. PLAY. Ibiza $1.99 If you’re going to Spain for the islands, then this app is perhaps what you’re looking for. It’s a guide to more than 50 of the best restaurants, boutique hotels, bars, and night clubs on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera. 3D Offline Map Mallorca $2.99 This app isn’t really much of a guide to the island of Mallorca, but it does have cool offline 3D maps of the island and Palma city. Walki-Talki Alhambra $4.99 If you’ve got the Alhambra on your must-see list in Spain, then you might be interested in this DIY tour – it’s an audio tour with a map and photos. GPSmyCity Walking Tours $4.99 each Don’t want to join a big group walking tour of a city? Then download these audio walking tours and do a tour on your own time. There’s a GPS function so you know if you’re on the right track or taking a wrong turn, and the cities in Spain are Barcelona , Madrid , Sevilla , and Valencia . There are “lite” versions of each one that you can check out before you buy these full versions, too. Subway/Metro Apps I found a few apps dedicated to helping you navigate the various underground transport systems in Spain. The Madrid Subway app ($0.99) is offline, includes an official Madrid subway map, and is a “complete guide to getting around” in Madrid. There’s a Valencia Metro app ($2.99) that offers the same features, plus the ability to use GPS to find the closest subway stop to wherever you are. There are two Barcelona metro apps I’ll point out – the first is Barcelona Metro AR ($1.99), an augmented reality app that requires a network connection and GPS, but has the cool ability to not just locate nearby metro stops on a map but show them to you using your iPhone’s camera. If you’re less into the whole AR thing, there’s also the simple Barcelona Metro Map ($0.99) that has everything you’ll need – a route planner, station finder (no network connection required), and timetable information.

Spanish Language iPhone Apps

WorldNomads Spanish Language Guide PLUS $1.99 WorldNomads has a series of language guides, and this is one of the few that isn’t free. There is a free Spanish guide in their series, but it has fewer features. This “plus” version includes more than 550 words and phrases, a 10-minute conversation lesson, and even South American variations on the language (so it’s useful for your trips to other Spanish-speaking countries, too). Most of the categories have expanded sections from the free version as well. Talking Spanish Phrasebook $0.99 This phrasebook has text and audio for more than 500 words and phrases, so if you’re having trouble with pronunciation you can always just hit the “play” button and let your iPhone do the talking for you. Catalan Phrasebook and Translator $2.99 If you’ll be spending time in the Catalan-speaking parts of Spain, then this phrasebook is another one you’ll want to add to your download list. There are more than 250 words and phrases in the phrasebook, and the translator feature gives you access to more than 5 million words and phrases (the translator does require an internet connection). Lingobabes Spanish $4.99 I’m tempted to put this one under the “fun” category, because I’m really not sure how useful it is as a language learning tool, but this app’s language lessons come from (dare I say) teachers clad in bikinis or other tight-fitting clothing.

Spain & Portugal – The MICHELIN Guide Restaurants $9.99 Foodies traveling in Spain will want this app – it gives you access to more than 4,200 Michelin restaurant listings in Spain, Portugal, and Andorra. It does require an internet connection. Spain in Tapas AR $1.99 each I love these apps, mainly because they’re about tapas . The fact that they’re using the new and trendy augmented reality makes them just slightly cooler. With both, you’ll get access to listings for hundreds of tapas bars in the area, and when you hold your iPhone up you’ll see which ones are nearby. The two areas covered are Madrid and Barcelona . This app does require a 3G iPhone and GPS. iHymn Spain $0.99 Take Spain’s national anthem with you wherever you go with this handy app. It includes the anthem itself, along with sheet music and the history of the anthem – but don’t look for lyrics, because Spain’s national anthem has no words. iFlag Spain $0.99 While you’re playing the national anthem, you need Spain’s flag to look at somewhere, right? Well, here you are. This interactive app lets you make the Spanish flag move and sway in the “wind” with a touch of your finger.

Madrid's market scene is having a moment. Besides all the permanent food markets around the city, pop-up markets specializing in everything from crafts and antiques to food trucks and holiday treats rule the Spanish capital. Some run on a once-a-month schedule or happen yearly; the famous Rastro happens each Sunday, while the San Anton market is open seven days a week. If you're just not sure what to take (combining these with the metro, bus, taxi, and ride-sharing programs can be overwhelming), you can enter your destination into the Chipi app , and it will line up all of the options side-by-side, prices and timing included, so you can select the best transportation option for you.

Madrid is famous for its small plates of delicious food, called tapas, and tapeando (hopping from bar to bar sampling tapas) is one of the best ways to dig into Spanish culture and cuisine. But it can be complicated to decide where to go, especially if you want to visit a number of different spots. Create your route using the Tappas app, which shows you the best spots to indulge in these small plates of delicious food. Each restaurant or bar featured has relevant information (address, website and opening hours), reviews and photos. Download for free for iPhone .

Fever will help you find things to do in Madrid beyond just tourist attractions, including concerts, restaurants, cultural events and more. Search the app from several different categories, from brunch to Valentine's Day, or escape rooms and tours. You can buy tickets on the app, as well as packages, and even view set menus at restaurants. Whether you use the app to actually purchase or not, Fever will give you an excellent understanding of what's happening in Madrid while you're visiting, taking you beyond the usual museums and monuments. In the age of the smartphone, apps make travel easy and fun. Here are some must-have apps to download before heading to Madrid.

If you can’t manage to snag a taxi, Cabify is a car service you can use instead. In most cases, it’s actually cheaper than a taxi, and the sleek, black cars with free water bottles and snazzy drivers make for an upgraded experience. Simply download the app, add your credit card info and request a pickup. You can even reserve a ride in advance, which is handy if you’ve got an early morning flight. If you want to eat out in Madrid but have no idea where to go, download El Tenedor , which means “the fork” in Spanish. You can search restaurants by location, cuisine or even by discount. Some restaurants offer up to 50% off food if each person in your party orders a minimum of an appetizer and a main course, or a main course and a dessert. You can often find great deals on weekdays, when discounts are more common. Even if you’re not price-conscious, El Tenedor is an easy way to make online reservations. Plus, each time you complete a reservation, you’ll earn Yums Points, which you can later use for discounts. Download in Apple Store or Google Play .

For those who dare to navigate Madrid’s EMT bus system, this app is essential. You can map your route, find the right bus and even see how many minutes it will be until the bus arrives at your chosen stop. If anything goes wrong, you can also report problems through the app. Download in Apple Store or Google Play .

Google Translate

Madrid is a fabulous city to visit because it’s really authentic, but the flip side of this is that you won’t always be able to get by in English. Before you panic about the fact you can’t speak Spanish, download Google Translate and be on your way. The app has all sorts of fun uses: you can hold the phone’s camera over writing to translate written text such as menus, or type in a phrase in English and press play; the app will say your phrase in Spanish out loud, in case you’re unsure how to pronounce it. You can even download the Spanish language pack offline if you want to be able to use the app without internet access. Download in Apple Store or Google Play .

GuíaPunto Madrid

This app is essential for figuring out what kind of activities you’d like to take part in in Madrid. The app searches for bars, galleries, cultural centers, shopping and more in Madrid, based on your preferences. There’s quite a variety of spots included, and you can find historical places, trendy areas and all sorts of unique corners of the city. Download on Apple Store or Google Play .

Ulmon Madrid Travel Guide & Map

Using My Phone in Spain: A Tourist’s Guide to Roaming, SIM cards, Wi-fi, and More

Whether it’s for staying in touch with friends and family, navigating through unfamiliar Spanish cities, or checking your flight info, your cell phone is a necessity for travel these days. You might have questions like, “Is using my phone in Spain complicated?” “What’s an eSIM?” Worry not, because we’ve got you covered. In this blog post, we’ll tell you the ins and outs of using a cell phone in Spain, giving you practical tips to keep you connected and make the most of your Spain vacation.  

Using My Phone in Spain: A Quick Guide  

Understand your home carrier’s international roaming options  .

First, let’s talk about international roaming. It’s a special service from your home phone carrier that lets you use your phone for calling, making and receiving voicemails and messages, and using the internet abroad.   

Here are the pros and cons: On the upside, international roaming is convenient because you use your own phone and number, and you don’t have to buy anything extra. The possible downsides are high charges, limited data, and slower internet speeds like 3G.

So, check your carrier’s rates and policies for international roaming. Ask about any affordable roaming packages they offer for Spain. This way, you can avoid any surprises on your phone bill later!

Buying an eSIM Card that works in Spain  

Another option is an eSIM card. This is like a virtual SIM card that’s embedded into your phone, so no physical card swapping is necessary. It was introduced in 2018, so any older phone will not have this option. Having an eSIM card lets you have two phone numbers on your phone: one for your home country and one for Spain.  

So basically, you can easily switch between local networks with a few clicks on your phone, and you don’t have to pay any roaming fees.  

Here’s how it works: 

Before you leave for your trip, download an eSIM app . Some of the more reputable apps are Airalo and Dent . Check out the package prices for an eSIM card in Spain and select which one works for you. Buy the package ahead of time so it’s ready to use once you arrive.

Then, you can activate the eSIM once you land in Spain. If you need more data while you’re on your trip, you can top up and buy more data and phone time.

Purchasing an International SIM Card that works in Spain    

Another option is to buy an international SIM card. This SIM card keeps you connected in various countries around the world. This might be a good option if you plan to travel around other parts of Europe . It’s perfect for travelers as it allows you to use your phone with local networks, avoiding high roaming charges.  

The benefits are clear: affordable rates, reliable coverage, and flexibility. You can grab an international SIM card from various places, like airports, online retailers, or even local stores in Spain. Check out these ones to see if they’re a good fit: OneSimCard , HolaFly, or Surfroam SIM Card.    

To activate it, simply follow the instructions provided, which usually involve inserting the SIM card and configuring your phone’s settings.   

Keep in mind that some international SIM cards may have limitations, such as restricted data speeds or limited coverage in certain areas. So do your research and choose wisely.  

Local SIM Cards in Spain  

If you’re planning on an extended stay in Spain or if you’re a frequent traveler , getting a local Spanish SIM card is another option. It is typically more economical than buying an international SIM card. 

If you get a prepaid SIM card, it usually comes with a set amount of credit for calls, texts, and data usage. You can easily top up or recharge the card with additional credit as needed.  

You can also get a local SIM card with a contract, which starts at about a 12-month minimum commitment. Benefits include affordable rates, abundant data, and a local phone number, making it easier to connect with locals.  

Some reputable Spanish mobile companies are Orange , Vodafone, Movistar, Yoigo, Jazztel, Pepephone , and Masmovil . You can find local SIM cards at convenience shops like OpenCor in Spain, mobile network shops, or on the mobile operator’s website.  

Activating them is simple too. Just pop in the SIM card, configure your phone settings, and you’re all set.

However, keep in mind that using a local SIM card means having a local phone number and potentially limited coverage in remote areas. The country code in Spain is +34.

Wi-Fi and Internet Options in Spain

You’ll find Wi-Fi in many cafes, hotels, shops, restaurants, and public spaces.  

Almost all of the places we’ve seen offering Wi-Fi for customers in Spain is free . To connect, simply look for the network name, enter the password if required, and you’re connected.  

But beware! While public Wi-Fi is convenient, someone might be tracking your online activity.  

If you want to add security, use a virtual private network (VPN) to protect your information on your phone. It encrypts your data and protects your identity, especially when using public Wi-Fi. So, consider installing a trusted VPN app like NordVPN or ExpressVPN before connecting.

Useful Apps for Travelers in Spain  

First, you might want to upload practical apps before you come to Spain that help with translation (Google Translate) or transportation (Google Maps, Waze).

For a public transportation app , major cities like Barcelona or Madrid have their own app, which might be easier to use than Google Maps.

For easy ways to connect with friends and family back home, use communication apps like WhatsApp , Skype , and Viber , which are commonly used. WhatsApp is the most popular choice in Spain.

Tips for Using a Mobile Phone Safely in Spain  

• Be mindful in public places to avoid attracting attention to your phone. Prevent opportunistic theft!  
• Enable a passcode or biometric authentication to protect against unauthorized access.  
• Install a tracking app to locate your phone in case it gets lost or stolen.  
• Regularly check on your data usage and roaming charges to avoid any bill shocks.  
• Switch off data roaming when not needed, and connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible. 
• Backup your data regularly to safeguard important information.  
• Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers your phone in case of loss or theft.  
• Report any incidents of theft or loss to the local authorities immediately. There’s a chance you could recover your phone if anything happens to it!

Basically, when it comes to using your cell phone in Spain, you have lots of options! Whether it’s with roaming, an eSIM card, an international SIM card, or a local SIM card, be sure to check rates beforehand to avoid getting stuck with ridiculous fees. Moving to teach English in Spain but don't speak a lick of the local language? Don't worry, there's an app for that. Not sure how to get around the new city you'll be living in, or where to grocery shop and find dinner? You guessed it, there's an app for that too! These days, mobile apps are making our lives that much easier; there's virtually an app for almost everything! Whether you're vacationing in Spain for an extended period of time, or teaching English there indefinitely, here are some of the most popular apps in Spain to have on your phone. 

Best Spain Travel Apps

Best spain public transport apps, best apps for spain travel, best spanish translation apps, best food delivery apps in spain, best chat apps in spain, other popular apps, 1. spain public transport apps, eurail/interrail rail planner.

This Android and iOS app isn’t specific to Spain, but to rail travel throughout all of Europe. It's probably one of the best Spain train apps out there too. It will allow you to visit popular destinations like Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Granada for a mini weekend getaway, or even venture into France or the rest of Europe! The great thing about the Rail Planner app is that it allows you to look up train information, no matter where you are. It works offline and gives you quick access to departure and arrival times for trains. The app will also allow you to make e-ticket reservations, find train stations near you, and look up departure and arrival information for every station

Missed the last bus? No worries, the Free Now app can help you book a taxi within minutes from wherever you are. A popular Spain travel app, it works very similarly to the Uber app – simply put in your location, and the next available taxi will be notified to pick you up. Like Uber, you can track where the taxi is in real-time on its route. Payments are also accepted directly through the app. Available on Android and iOS .

While Uber is not allowed to operate in Barcelona, the ride-sharing service does operate in Madrid . 

Metro de Madrid Official (Madrid Only)

This app allows you to immediately find or plan the fastest way to get from your location to your destination via train. The Android and iOS apps provide you with an up-to-date map of the whole Madrid Metro network, a map with main points of tourist interests in the city, as well as information on train lines, transfer stations, and any line disruptions.

EMT (Madrid Only)

Although a majority of locals and tourists alike prefer to use the Metro, there are many people that opt to use Madrid’s bus network. The EMT app is a popular Spain bus app in Madrid that will help you locate when your bus is coming, and what bus route you should take to get to your destination. Available for both Android and iOS .

BiciMAD (Madrid Only)

What better way to check out your new city than on two wheels? BiciMAD is Madrid’s bike-sharing system and is available to you on both Android and iOS  in both Spanish and English. The app will let you know where you can pick up the card that allows you to enjoy this service, as well as where the nearest bike station is to you. The in-built GPS also maps your biking route, distance, the speed you are riding at, as well as calories burned.

TMB (Barcelona Only)

This is Barcelona’s official public transport app for both the train and bus networks. The TMB app will allow you to map out which bus/train will get you to your destination in the shortest time. You can create an account for a more personalized service such as status updates on your regular routes, etc.

Bicing  (Barcelona Only)

A little different to your typical bicycle, the Bicing ride-share program provides you with a bike that has an electric motor to assist in your pedaling. If you stop pedaling, the engine stops and the bike will stop moving. There are 41 Bicing stations around Barcelona, but you will need to register for a subscriber card before you can start using this service.

Google maps.

A popular option amongst foreigners living in Spain because of its simplistic design and ease of use. Google Maps will guide you through any city, town, village or area in Spain, by showing you the most optimal routes available at the moment of your search. Available on both Android and iOS , it can provide anything from walking, biking, public transport, and driving routes, and you can see what routes will look like at a future day and time. 

Triposo is a smart Spain travel app that provides city guides for over 100 cities in Spain including Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville. You can download your guides to your phone from the Triposo app for access to offline maps, local tips, restaurant and nightlight recommendations, and personalized suggestions without the Internet!

3. Best Spanish Translation Apps

Spanish dict.

Don’t speak a lick of Spanish, no problems! The Spanish Dictionary app is here to help. While English is spoken in most cities, this will definitely still come in handy. The app allows you to easily translate English words into Spanish, and vice versa. Other than the dictionary feature, highlights a Spanish translator, verb conjugations, interactive flashcards, a language guide and a Q&A forum. Available for both Android and iOS .

4. Best Food Delivery Apps in Spain

El tenedor (the fork).

This is basically Spain’s version of Yelp and one of the most popular apps in Spain. It provides you access to more than 30,000 restaurants around the country. You simply enter your location to see what is available near you, and then filter options based on cuisine, price, and reviews before making your selection. The app will also allow you to reserve a table as well as benefit from exclusive restaurant deals and offers.

Having a lazy night in, already in your pajamas, and realize your fridge is empty? Don’t worry, the Just Eat app is here to save the day (or night)! Similar to GrubHub, Seamless, and UberEats, Just Eats has access to food from over 4,000 restaurants in Spain. Simply choose which restaurant you want food from, select the menu items you want, and your food will be delivered to your door.

5. Best Chat Apps for Spain

This is the most popular communications app in Spain, so popular in fact, that you’ll hear people say “Send me a WhatsApp” instead of “Send me a text”. WhatsApp is a free messaging app that lets you communicate via WiFi or a data plan without the frustration of roaming charges. You can use it to text, make voice calls, send voicemails, and send videos and photos. WhatsApp has become so popular that many restaurants and hotels are even using it to communicate with their customers. 

6. Other Popular Apps

Just moved to Spain and need to organize permanent housing? Idealista is the app to use! You can search for apartments, houses, or a room in the area of your choice, using the search feature, and then browse the listings in that area. This is a favorite app amongst local Spaniards that are looking for a new place to live as it conveniently allows you see if there are any available places in the immediate vicinity of a neighborhood or street you may be roaming. Available for both  Android  and  iOS .

Spain Beaches

This iOS app is for the beach lover in all of us. If you’re venturing out of the city for a relaxing beach weekend along Spain’s calm, coastal waters, then this is the app for you. You’ll find more than 3,400 beaches, see information and weather forecasts for each, photos, and a convenient save option for future reference.

This is a clean, basic app that makes learning fun. With its game-like lessons, you will earn points, race against the clock, and move up levels as your Spanish improves. Available on Android and iOS , Duolingo is the world’s most popular way to learn Spanish online. Whether you’re a beginner starting with the basics, or looking to practice your reading, writing, and speaking, Duolingo is scientifically proven to work.

Similar to the OfferUp app here in the US, Wallapop is basically like a localized e-Bay where you can search for used items, and perhaps find a killer deal. The app is geo-location based to allow you to search for sale items within as little as a 1-kilometer radius from you. You’ll find anything from electronics and furniture, to luggage and sunglasses. Definitely a cheaper way to furnish your new apartment when you move over.  

Meetup helps people do more of what they love by finding and creating communities based on the ideas and activities that matter to them. You can browse a variety of gatherings happening in your new city, from yoga challenges, multicultural volleyball, and salsa nights, to hiking and language exchange groups. The Meetup app will let you easily see what is going on around you and join the group to find out more details. Get out there and mingle with the locals, and who knows, you might just find your new BFF.

Similar to Postmates in the US, Glovo is another popular app in Spain. It is an on-demand, local delivery service that promises to fetch whatever you want within your city and deliver it to you within an hour. Orders such as food from boutique restaurants that don’t offer delivery, high street department store products, late-night pharmacy needs, and alcohol, are all common requests. Not bad considering the Glovo app has a flat delivery fee of only €5.50 with no markup on the price of the products purchased.

Technology continues to make travel easier for millions of people around the globe. New apps offer travelers fresh ways to research a destination, connect with fellow globetrotters, communicate with locals, and track their flights. As a full-time digital nomad , I’ve learned the importance of having the right tools at your disposal when on the road.

Over the past few years, I’ve visited dozens of countries, flown hundreds of thousands of miles, and tested countless apps to find the ones that prove to be the most helpful. And while tools like Meetup, Google Maps, Google Translate, currency converters, and vacation rental , airline, and hotel–specific apps are in fact indispensable on most trips, I find that many of the best travel apps are still undiscovered by my fellow travelers.

Below, seven travel apps that make life on the go markedly easier (and more fun), from real-time flight trackers to photo-sharing gems—all of these apps are free, but some have paid pro versions worth considering. Don’t think these apps are only for full-time travelers—they prove useful for every type of traveler, whether you're in a brand-new destination or back for a return visit.

The other main benefit is that it allows you to share your flight information with friends and family members who are also on Flighty. They will receive real-time updates about your flight without you having to text them. My parents love to make sure I’m safe so they appreciate getting detailed information about my travels—even while I’m in the air.

Flightradar24 is a favorite app among fellow aviation geeks. It lets you track almost any aircraft you see in the air throughout the day or night. You can track your own flight, a friend's flight, or any plane you see in real-time. It shares plenty of cool data, like the altitude, speed, arrival and departure airports and times, and tail number.

There are tons of eSIM apps on the market, but Airalo is probably my favorite, with digital SIM cards available for dozens of countries. I find it to be the most reliable and offers the best data packages. It can be a little pricey, but it is the best option if you’re only taking short trips. Holafly is another eSIM app that offers unlimited data and works well, but I find the app to be much more glitchy than Airalo and would recommend using the desktop version.

This one is for the planner of the group. Wanderlog merges the best of a bunch of different apps into one. Imagine an app that lets you plan a trip with ease: collaborate with friends as if you’re on Google Docs, manage expense tracking like Splitwise, and have a central place for your reservations, checklists, and more. Tripit is a similar travel planner app, so you can download both and get a feel for which interface you like better.

Been allows you to track the countries you’ve visited and make a wish list of places you can’t wait to cross off your travel bucket list . It gives you information like the percentage of the globe you’ve been to and shows you a world map of your trips. It’s always fun to add in a new country whenever I reach my destination.

This app was introduced to me by fellow nomads I met at a cafe in Montevideo, Uruguay . It automatically tracks your route across the world, allowing you to quickly upload pictures throughout your travels that can be viewed by anyone who has access to your profile. It’s an excellent way to share important moments with loved ones without needing to send photos to each person individually. Orange Holiday Europe eSim

Orange Holiday Europe is an eSIM data plan that offers unlimited calls and texts in Europe and 20 GB of data to be used over a period of 14 days. The eSIM has a French phone number, and it’s a good option if you’re going to be traveling to other countries as well.

In addition to the free calls and texts in Europe, this eSIM card also provides customers with 120 minutes of free calls to worldwide numbers and 1000 free texts. The initial credit you get is valid for two weeks – after that period, you must purchase an additional plan to keep using the card.

The eSIM alone is valid for up to six months, but you will have to register it on Orange’s official website if you want to keep using it after the first month.

Their prepaid eSIM plan is 40 Euros, which is a bit pricey considering it’s valid only for two weeks. Unless you’re specifically looking for prepaid sim cards that will work in multiple European countries, this data plan just isn’t worth it.

If you want a cheap eSIM for Spain , Nomad is the way to go.

They offer four different data plans

These eSim packages are extremely affordable, but it’s still not cheaper than Airalo’s most affordable data plan.

You can also add value packs of 5 and 10 GB to any plan you select, so it’s easy to get a data allowance that’s a good fit for your needs.

Nomad charges $17 for an additional 5GB of data and $26 for 10 GB, but the data will be valid for up to 30 days. The main downside of Nomad is that they’re operating through Vodafone, which is only the third largest network operator in the country.

There is always the option to use their Europe eSIm packages too, if you plan on traveling outside of Spain. They have decent options for 25 countries, which rival the prices you see above.

This data plan is valid for 2 weeks after it’s first activated, while the card stays active for up to six months. The Holiday Zen prepaid eSIM costs some 20 Euros – it’s not too expensive, but it’s still not a great deal because the international providers just offer better value for your money.

So, unless you need access to a prepaid sim card that’s valid in multiple European countries, be sure to check out some other eSIM data plans first.

Their regional and multi-country bundles are a bit more expensive, but totally worth it if you’re going to be hopping from one European country to the next. Also, it’s worth noting that Ubigi eSIMs don’t have a phone number – they only include mobile data, but no access to calls or texts.

Benefits of Getting an eSIM in Spain

The main benefit of having an eSIM  for international travel is easy Internet access. Whether you need to look up directions in Google Maps or you want to be able to FaceTime your friends whenever you want, Internet access is something we start to appreciate only when we’re stranded in a foreign country without any free WiFi networks nearby.

Using public WiFi provided by shops and locales is always an option, but those connections are rarely secure. They’re also unstable and pretty slow, especially when there are dozens (if not hundreds) of other people using them at the same time. Data roaming is an option too, but it’s usually ridiculously expensive and just not worth it.

That’s why you get an eSIM if you want to have internet wherever and whenever. They’re affordable, easy to activate, and even easier to use.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSIMs in Spain

Orange Spain is the only local operator that offers prepaid eSim data plans, while the other operators only offer postpaid eSIM plans. However, you should know that the local mobile operators won’t issue you an eSim until you’ve provided them with your ID or passport number.

Another thing to note is that you must provide an ID within the first month of activating the eSim; if you don’t, the operator will suspend your card. But if you’re staying in Spain for less than a month, you don’t really have to worry about the eSIM getting suspended so you might be able to get away with not providing them with your personal information.

If you don’t feel comfortable just giving away this information, you can always get an eSim from a global provider that works just fine in Spain. Providers like Airalo and Holafly don’t need any personal information from you (other than payment info), but that’s because their eSim cards are data-only.

Data Needed When Traveling to Spain

How much data do you really need for your travels in Spain? Honestly, that’s a very personal question. Some people barely use a gigabyte of data while they’re traveling, and others can burn through 5 GB before breakfast. It depends on your internet browsing habits, and just how many TikToks and Instagram reels you’re used to watching on a daily basis.

Generally speaking, unlimited data eSIM plans are the best option if you want constant Internet access while you’re in Spain. If you’re fine conserving data and paying attention to how much data you’re using, the limited plans can work just fine.

But how much data is enough? Again, it depends on so many things, but let’s say that 5 GB should be plenty for a week of traveling. If you’re going to use it to check social media, send emails, and look up directions on Google Maps, it really will be plenty. But stream one HD movie on Netflix and you’ll burn through the data in an hour.

If you want to work while you’re in Spain, you should look into unlimited data plans. They’re definitely the best option for digital nomads, but also for travelers who are just used to having access to the internet every moment they’re awake.

Devices Compatible with an eSIM in Spain

Embedded sim cards are extremely convenient, but they’re not widely accessible to everyone. The technology is still being reserved for the most expensive phones, even though it’s been nearly half a decade since it first appeared on the market.

Most newer iPhones support eSIMs – if you have an iPhone that was released in 2018 or later, you’ll be glad to know that it supports an embedded sim and you can buy one while you’re in Spain.

It’s not so simple with Android phones – Samsung’s flagship phones and the Google Pixels all have it, but it’s still not an industry standard. Some manufacturers like Oppo and Motorola have started to include the technology in their devices in the past few years, but most budget and mid-range Android phones still don’t support embedded sim cards.

Also, whether or not your phone supports an eSIM depends on where it was manufactured. Many phones made in China don’t have the technology for eSIM because Chinese mobile networks are against this.

The quickest way to check whether your phone can use an eSim is to dial *#06# . Several identification numbers for your device will pop up and if you see an EID number , it means your phone is compatible with embedded sim cards. If there’s no EID number, unfortunately, you can’t install an eSim on your cell phone.

New EU airport scanners 'in two months' could mean big delays to France, Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal

When a brand new system called EES becomes operational in autumn, non-EU travellers entering the Schengen Area will have to go through new scanners at EU borders in a move critics fear will lead to '12 months of delays'. In less than two months everyone entering the European Union will have to go through a completely new passport control procedure.

The EU's post-Brexit Entry/Exit System (EES) will launch on 10 November, EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson has confirmed. And this means that the new €7 fee to get into countries including France, Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal will follow.

When it becomes operational in autumn, non-EU travellers entering the Schengen Area will face new border controls. Everyone will have to go through new scanners in the automated registration system - including everyone travelling from the UK. Travellers will need to scan their passports or other travel documents at a self-service kiosk each time they cross an EU external border.

It will not apply to legal EU citizens or residents or those with long-stay visas. There have been concerns that there could be teething problems - potentially causing big delays at ports and airports. The system will register the traveller’s name, biometric data, and the date and place of entry and exit. Facial scans and fingerprint data will be taken every three years and are valid for multiple trips within that period. Home Affairs Commissioner Johansson said: “The moment is finally there. There may have been times you believed it will never happen But it's going to happen. Everything is coming together. We're in the final testing phase. There is a real momentum now. Carriers, operators, train stations, airports, everyone is getting ready for the big day.”

The EES was first slated to launch in 2022 but has faced multiple setbacks due to IT issues and delays in installing the automated barriers required at all international land, maritime and air borders in the Schengen Area. Ms Johansson said: “With the EES we will know exactly who enters the Schengen area with a foreign passport, “We will know if people stay too long, countering irregular migration.

And the EES will make it harder for criminals, terrorists or Russian spies to use fake passports thanks to biometric identification, photos and fingerprints.” Andrea Godfrey, head of Regent Travel has spoken about possible delays caused by the system. She previously said: “We have been told to expect delays and queues in airports for up to a year. The early days of these schemes are likely to be chaotic and slow.”

Discover Ferries, the industry body for passenger ferries, also expressed concerns about “the lack of clarity” on the EES system. Earlier this year French Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete said the EU ’s external borders would face “serious operational problems.” Vergriete added, “We are aware of the risk in terms of passenger fluidity. It is a challenge, and we must not get this wrong.”

French authorities will operate EES border checks at the UK’s Port of Dover, Eurostar and Eurotunnel. They are currently working with the UK government to minimise the system’s impact on border flows and traffic, but express concern about potential waiting times. Government agencies and representatives for the tourism industry have said that the EES will likely cause long queues for ferry traffic sailing from Dover to Calais.

Roughly six months after the launch of the EES will see the introduction of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). This new scheme obligates non-EU citizens who do not require an EU visa to gain travel authorisation to enter the bloc (as opposed to the EES which is a monitoring system of border crossings by third-country nationals). The visa waiver will be mandatory for anyone wishing to visit the Schengen Area short term.

Travellers will be able to apply for ETIAS online before their trip at a cost of €7. Once approved, the electronic travel authorisation will be electronically linked to their passport and will last for three years.
