Travel Claims team grows at Simpson Millar

A 250% increase in case numbers during 2014 has seen national law firm Simpson Millar further expanded its Holiday & Travel Law department.

Amanda Dunford joins the firm from Hill Dickinson LLP and has over 10 years’ experience in the travel sector, having previously worked at Thomson and First Choice Holidays.

“Amanda’s experience is invaluable and she will fit perfectly into our growing team here at Simpson Millar,” says Nick Harris, Head of International Travel Law at the firm. “Like myself and a many other members of the Simpson Millar Travel team Amanda has extensive tour operating experience. Amanda also brings with her a wealth of knowledge and claims handling experience acquired from her time managing large group actions on behalf of the UK’s largest tour operator, TUI UK Limited.”

Amanda joins the firm as it the Department recorded record profits and numbers of instructions last year. “Instructions were substantially ahead of our budget in 2014,” says Nick. “With a 250% increase on 2013, we have had to bring in new resources and Amanda’s appointment comes at a great time for the practice.”

Amanda says: “Simpson Millar is known to be a leader in the field of travel law and I am very excited to have been invited to join the team”.

Nick Harris adds: “The success we have enjoyed means we are constantly looking to recruit the best people. We currently have a very strong catastrophic and serious injury side to the Travel Law Department we are looking to develop further and are receiving many new instructions from clients with life changing injuries”

The Department is looking forward to build on its success following the acquisition of Simpson Millar by Fairpoint last year and has already seen growth in new areas including foreign road traffic accident work.

Nick added: “We are very fortunate to be involved with Fairpoint whose attitude to support and nurture growth and provide sustainable investment is fantastic. I am certainly looking forward to the future and further growth.”

Highly recommend for SEN education matters

I have been working with Rachel Scales now for the last year, and two of her colleagues before that. I have nothing but praise for the job they do. Rachel is kind, efficient and a great communicator. Protected award claim …

Great industrial disease compensation service

I contacted Simpson Millar after reviewing a number of solicitors. I was looking for someone to help me and my mother claim on behalf of my late father. The case was complex and somewhat historical. I spoke to Anthony Waddington in the Leeds office. He agreed to take on the case, he explained what we would need to do. He was both optimistic and realistic. Simpson Millar two and half years

I contacted Simpson Millar ref:ENQ00355459 on 25/07/2024. They emailed me on 29/07/2024 saying, "We tried calling you today but were unable to reach you. Please call us back on FREEPHONE 0800 260 5010." I called them back after having previously emailed some of my details. When I spoke to the lady, she said they take claims up to two and a half years after the accident. My accident was two years and ten days ago, but she said they couldn't take the claim because it had been more than two and a half years. After years of experience, I've noticed that solicitors winning a case doesn't necessarily mean they are good. They often take easy, basic cases. If a claim is too complicated or not financially rewarding, they won’t represent you. Many people don’t know what to do in these situations. In fact, I recently discovered one solicitor lied to me. I advise anyone to first get some advice or search online. In many cases, "You do not need solicitors."

You don’t even deserve one star !

You don’t even deserve one star !! An absolute shower of a company, you seam to go through staff like no other company I’ve ever dealt with. Four in the last three years have fumbled their way through my son’s case. Taking almost four years to sell a property & return his late mother’s ashes. Absolutely disgusting service & had the audacity to charge thirteen thousand pounds for the shoddy service. I wouldn’t let near anything ever again.

Simpson Millar have a well deserved reputation.

Simpson Millar supported us in the past and were my first go-to firm when I had to engage in a third appeal. At first it was disappointing not to have the support of the same Senior Associate who helped us previously. However, the paralegal who took the case was very helpful and always very positive. Absolutely awful experience

Absolutely awful experience with Simpson Millar. They never answer the phone or respond to emails and the only communication I have from them is irrelevant to my stage in the process. I’m sure if you are looking for something small they can help but they took on the Debenhams case & don’t have the staff to deal with the number of questions they receive so they simply ignore you instead.

Great experience!

I had the pleasure of dealing with Andrea Rigby who was able to secure a settlement for both mine and my partners claim that we are very satisfied with. Upon returning to the UK after falling ill at a resort in Mexico, I contacted Simpson Millar to understand my prospects should I wish to claim. My initial handler explained that I had a valid claim and that SM would be happy to take it on for me. It did take quite some time to reach the end however I completely understand that this isn’t necessarily in full control of SM. Major holiday retailers are pretty slow to respond and often backlogged with work. Andrea took over conduct of my case around halfway through due to the previous handler leaving SM. Andrea updated me regularly and fought to get the money my partner and I rightfully deserved to settle the claim. Greensboro Swarm Complete 4-Team Trade

The Greensboro Swarm have announced the completion of a 4-team trade which netted them the "Returning rights" to Zavier Simpson and Caleb McConnell. Those names may appear familiar as they both played for the Charlotte Hornets Summer League team which went 7-1 this off-season.

Zavier Simpson averaged 13 points 4 rebounds 6.7 assists 1.4 steals 1 block 1.7 turnovers in 28 minutes per game in summer league and emerged as a fan favorite for his controlled and reliable two-way play. However, he won't be suiting up for the Swarm any time soon as he has signed overseas for the 2024-25 season. If Simpson's season finishes early, or if his contract were to be terminated, he looks set to return to the Swarm.

Caleb McConnell has not signed overseas, which suggests this trade will see him join the Swarm for the upcoming 2024-25 season. McConnell was a rotation player at summer league playing 12mpg and only appearing in six of the team's eight games, However, he played 32 games for the OKC Blue last season averaging 6.3 pts 5.4 reb 2.2 ast 1.1stl 0.7blk while shooting FG 46% and 3P 22%. McConnell is known for his perimeter defense which could prove helpful for a Swarm team who struggled on that end last year.

As part of the trade, the Swarm sent the returning rights of Nathan Mensah to the Austin Spurs. Mensah started for the Spurs Summer League team and appears likely to play for their G-League team the Austin Spurs next season.

Simpson millar exits most of private client in profitability push.

National firm Simpson Millar is to exit private client services except for personal injury and family law as part of a major restructure sparked in part by the introduction next year of fixed recoverable costs.

The firm is close to offloading its 35-strong conveyancing team to another firm and closing its dispute resolution, employment, and wills, trust and probate departments. It is also exiting some travel personal injury work.

It is consulting with around 100 staff whose roles are affected, with the firm set to shrink to around 420 staff concentrating on personal injury, public law and family law.

Chief executive Greg Cox said he “firmly” believed the firm could challenge “the way that legal services are offered to clients”.

He continued: “However, like all firms in the legal sector we must adapt to the changing legal services market – including the extension of fixed costs to large parts of civil litigation – and wider external forces.

“The proposed restructure takes into consideration these challenges and provides us with an opportunity to review our operational efficiencies, get the firm ready for the forthcoming changes and further invest in our growth areas.”

Mr Cox told Legal Futures that the firm had been examining the practice “and making sure we’ve got right profitability margins”.

The aim was to ensure both “profitability and focus” and “getting ourselves in the right position for fixed costs”. They will apply to most money claims worth up to £100,000, meaning they are likely to catch a lot of personal injury work.

The decision on the dispute resolution department was not driven by the prospect of fixed costs, however.

Mr Cox explained that Simpson Millar’s non-injury litigation work was mainly smaller group actions, such as for leaseholders affected by onerous ground rents, rather than a generalist civil litigation practice.

“We’re seeing those books coming towards an end and we don’t necessarily see the flow of new work,” he said.

However, Mr Cox did not rule out returning to the areas the firm was leaving in time.

In Simpson Millar’s most recent accounts, for 2020, revenue fell 7% to £30m – which it attributed largely to extended case durations due to Covid – and a loss of £8m, on top of losing £5.7m in 2019.

They recorded that, in December 2021, the firm accepted a capital contribution of £11.7m from its parent company, Doorway Holdings.

On the same date, Simpson Millar repaid £8.2m in capital, and £3.5m in accrued interest, owed to Doorway 4 Law – the ultimate parent company – under a £25m long-term loan facility.

The Fountains of Peterhof
