Dodge Journey Airbag Light:  Meaning + How to Fix

The airbag light comes on because your Dodge Journey’s airbag control module has failed a self-diagnostic cycle, which means there will be codes stored that’ll tell you why the light came on. 

The catch is not every OBD II scanner can pull airbag-related codes . So you’ll either have to take your Journey to a shop to have them read or pick up a quality scanner.

Dodge Journey Airbag Light on Causes

While a scan tool can quickly fix your vehicle’s airbag light, there’s still some anecdotal evidence you can use to help you narrow down the causes.

If your Dodge Journey has been in an accident, the airbag light will stay on until the system has been fixed. Here are some common reasons your Journey’s airbag light could come on.

1.  Seat Belts

Safety belts are still the most critical safety feature in the event your Journey crashes.  Modern vehicles have sensors running to the seat belts to let the computer system know if they are buckled and locked up.

If you have a seat belt stuck in the lock position, it might be why your airbag light is on.  See if you can tug at it and get it moving.

I am having a problem with my Journey in that sometimes when I turn my steering wheel to the right I'll get an audio "ding" sound and my airbag light will come on. It only stays on for a few seconds and then shuts off. This is very annoying, especially the "ding" sound. I took the car into my dealer and, after investigating the problem, I was asked to just put up with it and told that the air bag would not pop out accidentally. Why can't this be repaired? Has anyone else had this problem? What might be causing this to happen?

I would try another dealer. The air bag light only comes on when there is a failure in the diagnostics mode on startup or a sensor or electrical integrity error while driving. At present, your air bag might not deploy in an accident. I would go to another dealer ASAP.

That sounds like a good plan. I will follow up this week.

Wasn't there a recall on the clock spring? That could be causing the issue. Never ignor the airbag light! If on your airbags don't work!

Has anyone had this problem solved? My 2010 Dodge Journey R/T is having the air bag light coming on as I drive. I'll appreciate any breakthrough! Thank you all! 

Air bag issues are something best left to the dealer to diagnose.

I have advised that I still had 6 orhers that were reported back in 2015 that I never got done and wanted to take care of that as well. Was told that it does not show in the system and I would need to contact NHTSA for more details. Ive reached out to a few people who gave me the same information.

I called Dodge because they're is an open recall for something totally different. I mentioned this and they said there's is no recall for it but I can pay a $130 diagnostic fee to see what's wrong. Now, I've searched this website and I have see the very same complaint from several consumers. Shouldn't that raise a red flag!? why are we all having the same exact problems with the same exact make and model? I will be contacting Dodge and have them do something about this. I have a 16 year old driver and I can't in good faith even put her behind the wheel. I will never purchase another Dodge. Every since I have purchased this car it's been recall after recall. I've never in my life had this problem with my other cars and it's insane! I'm calling Dodge!.

Start my ignition and my airbag light illuminated and been on since then I call the Dodge dealer and was told I have no recall on my car I am not sure what to do but was also told my car is not safe to drive this way.

The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

13 Air Bag Light On problem

Out of nowhere, for no reason, our airbag light came on and is now stuck on the dash. We were just driving west on i70 towards wheeling wv. Light traffic overcast but no rain. Now we are being told by the dealership that our airbags won't go off in our face but they also won't function at all when needed in an accident.

The contact called the same dealer back at (843) 474-0026 and was informed to bring the vehicle to the shop. The vehicle was not taken back to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. Additionally, the contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17v432000 (air bags). The failure mileage was approximately 135,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

15 Air Bag Light On problem

The contact owns a 2015 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that the front seat passenger side headrest air bag deployed after the door was closed. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to landers Dodge Jeep Chrysler where it was diagnosed that the headrest air bag deployed and needed to be reset due to the srs system activating. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 39,042.

16 Air Bag Light On problem

Takata recall : well the electrical I have always had an issue with. All outlets inside the car stopped working within 3 months after I recieved my car. At that time I did get recalls about electrical. Never brought it in as I did not think it was an issue until the steering wheel horn does not honk anymore and my car does not make a sound when I lock it. Also the airbag light just popped up out of nowhere so im unsure if theres a wire that got loose somehow which is a bit scary.

Airbag Light problem solved!!!!

Many people have issues with the damn airbag light always coming on and beeping. It's enough to drive you mad. Many say it's the clock spring. Well, my dealer is fixing the problem now. The problem is something I have not read anywhere regarding this issue. In my van the light keeps coming on cause there is a short in the wiring for the driver's side seat belt. The wiring is underneath the seat in the floor. For them to fix it they have to take out the entire seat to get to the wiring. The total cost to diagnose and fix was $477. Thankfully I still have an extended warranty  

Your problem is not solved yet. You should've waited until you get your vehicle back and tested. I don't believe a short in the seat belt system should trigger the air bag light, seat belt light should be on instead. Maybe you never read of this solution before because is not. Anyways, keep us posted, I'm really interested on this solution, I work on special seating, often disconnect seatbelt wiring during testing, never had a air bag light on, been on this business for 15 years.

Can't argue with 2 real live cases can you? Especially Steffin......  

OK, It is tied to the seat belt harness, but it is actually part of the air bag system. I read it wrong. The seat belt pre-tensioner is actually part of the air bag system, it can not be engaged unless the air bag deploys at the same time (or very, very close to same time).  

Actually this happens more often than one might think. Seat belt pretentionmers are one of the go to points anytime there's an airbag light. Body codes are predominately dedicated to the safety restrain systems and many are dedicated to pretentioners.  

thank you to the others who backed up my claim. Im not a mechanic so i have no choice but to believe the dealer. I drove the van all day yesterday and it never came on. Since i have an extended warranty it only cost me $100.

Yes, disconnect the battery (-) and wait 2 minutes before you begin  

I checked resistance of the tensioner and it was about one ohm. Sprayed some contact cleaner on both connectors and plugged it back in. Light is off for now, we'll see. BTW I did not bother to disconnect the battery.  

Me too! 2 years after I bought my 2012 Town & Country I had the same problem. The dealer said the wires under my seat were frayed that it must have been done by my pet (don't have a pet). They fixed it under the warrantee but now it's happening again. Something must have happened to the wires under my drivers seat again. Guess it's time to go back to the dealer only this time not under warrantee. :-(  

I recently bought a 2008 Grand caravan with some serious issues but knew I was going to be doing some work to get it in good shape. the instrument lights showed 1,the airbag light always on, 2 the ESP/BAS light on. The electric doors and their windows were non functioning, OK the fuse fixed one of the doors but the right door still dead. Turned out that the wiring harness was removed for some un explained reason. I bought a replacement harness and just reconnected the front connector today, a couple of tries and it finally functioned perfectly. I had to take the vehicle for an errand and lo and behold no more airbag light. I suspect that was the problem all along. I have no idea if the sliding doors are airbag equipped but if it helps someone else to check for this area it might just fix the problem.

In USA version of van, (body coumputer tipm) changing country code to: Europe, activated airbag light on dashboard(B222A - Vehicle Line Mismatch ). After changing back to USA, airbag light goes out.  

US vehicles and european vehicles have different airbag settings (and ABS). You cannot change the country code to europe. The country code "Rest of the world" should work

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
