Tourists and residents alike can take advantage of the many cruises that depart from New York City, offering easy access to warm weather getaways, family vacations, expeditions, and more. After all, nothing screams adventure like sailing away from the Big Apple with the Statue of Liberty and iconic city skyline in your wake.

Plus, New York is home to the oldest cruise terminal in the United States. Nowadays, there are two hubs, one in Manhattan and another in Brooklyn . An additional cruise terminal, in Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, also serves the area.

The Manhattan cruise terminal is located on the edge of Midtown, making it easy to spend port days or pre-cruise time exploring Times Square, Central Park, or the Theater District. The Empire State Building and iconic department stores including Macy’s Herald Square are also within walking distance of the Manhattan cruise port.

The Brooklyn cruise port is a 15-minute drive from Brooklyn Bridge Park , which offers some of the best views of downtown Manhattan. If you're looking to stretch your legs, the walk across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan offers just over a mile of picturesque city viewpoints. While Bayonne, New Jersey may not be a huge tourist destination, sailing from Cape Liberty does provide a postcard-perfect look at the Manhattan skyline and its famous neighbor, the Statue of Liberty.

Viking offers ocean cruises between New York and Reykjavik in June, August, and September.

Trade the soaring skyscrapers of New York City for coastal Canada, remote Greenland, and endless Icelandic summer days. This Viking itinerary makes two stops in Canada and two stops in Greenland before circumnavigating Iceland, beginning with the remote Westfjords and ending in Reykjavik. Sail the same seas as legendary Norse explorer Leif Erikkson (on a far more luxurious Viking ship) while learning about the American Revolution and Canadian exploration from the cruise line’s resident historian. Lounge by the pool, visit the spa, or look out for whales and puffins. Viking has several nearly identical ocean ships sailing this itinerary from New York—each can accommodate a maximum of 930 passengers, allowing them to dock in ports larger ships cannot access.

It’s impossible to get bored on the MSC Meraviglia . See six Broadway-caliber shows over a 7-night cruise, spend sea days at the thermal spa or lounging by the pool, go bowling, play arcade games, try out an F1 simulator, or work out in a state-of-the-art gym—the opportunities are endless. MSC’s Meraviglia sails from New York to Bermuda, Canada, New England, the Bahamas, and Florida and can accommodate up to 5,642 passengers across 2,214 staterooms. Choose among 23 dining venues and 20 bars and lounges, or try to eat your way through all of them.

Norwegian Prima is one of the best cruises for solo travelers departing from New York City.

On most cruise lines, traveling solo means paying up to double the fare for a cabin to yourself, but not on the Norwegian Prima . This ship has a special area set aside for solo travelers with 73 studio suites and a private common area for mingling. Each of the Norwegian Prima’s 95-square-foot studio suites comes with a full-size bed, en suite bathroom, and a vanity table. And while space inside these studios are tight, you’ll likely be so busy go-karting, lounging by the pool, taking in shows, and relaxing in hot tubs, it’s unlikely you’ll find yourself spending much time in the room beyond catching some shut eye. The Norwegian Prima sails to Bermuda and the Caribbean from New York and offers a transatlantic repositioning itinerary.Best transatlantic cruise from New York

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger, 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater.

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Outside your suite, you can enjoy a range of pursuits, such as spa and salon treatments, free fitness classes, a nine-hole putting green and two swimming pools. Additionally, Seabourn Quest offers complimentary water sports equipment rentals at its Watersports Marina in select destinations.

The best cruises from New York you can book in 2024 and 2025

Kristy Tolley

If you want to cruise from New York, you will find a solid selection of cruise lines, ships and destinations. Opt for a Bermuda or multi-island Caribbean cruise, a fall leaf-peeping sailing down the Hudson River or perhaps a longer sailing across the Atlantic.

The New York City area is home to three major cruise embarkation points at major terminals along Manhattan's west side (the main New York City port), Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood and Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey. Cruises from New York are ideal for travelers interested in a pre- or post-cruise stay in the Big Apple to see a Broadway show, tour fantastic museums and visit amazing restaurants.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Cruisers will find sailings from New York City for every travel style — big-ship cruise lines for an activity-packed experience, upscale luxury sailings for the ultimate in pampering and even small-ship cruises offering an intimate onboard atmosphere.

Whether you're looking to sail in 2024 or planning a 2025 getaway, here are our top picks for cruises from New York.

Royal Caribbean: Southern Caribbean cruises

best caribbean cruises from new york

Active cruisers craving a beach getaway should consider Royal Caribbean 's 11-night Southern Caribbean sailings aboard Odyssey of the Seas. Part of the line's Quantum Class of vessels, Odyssey of the Seas is chock-full of every imaginable attraction.

The top deck is home to multiple pool areas, a kids splash zone, a skydiving simulator and a rock-climbing wall. Inside, you'll find a bumper car pavilion and a sports court that can serve as a laser tag arena and a trapeze school.

Given the ship's size and diverse activities, your group can enjoy plenty of together time — bonding during shore trips, dinner each evening or physical challenges like rock climbing. But it's easy to find "just me" time at the vessel's Vitality Spa, too.

Off-ship activities at various ports of call include hiking Mount Concordia or enjoying a relaxing beach day at Orient Beach on St. Maarten, touring St. Lucia's coast by catamaran or hiking the island's iconic twin pitons, snorkeling around shipwrecks in Barbados and relaxing on the honey-hued sands of Nevis.

The 2025 sailing departs Jan. 16 from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey. Fares start from $1,430 per person, based on double occupancy, for an inside cabin. Taxes, fees and port expenses start from about $186 per person.

American Cruise Lines: Fall foliage cruises

best caribbean cruises from new york

Leaf-peeping road trips might be popular, but why not avoid the traffic jams and enjoy a fall foliage cruise instead?

American Cruise Lines , the largest river cruise line in the U.S., operates small-ship sailings exclusively along the nation's rivers and coasts. Among them is the seven-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise that departs from New York City.

The itinerary is available on five of the line's 19 vessels — American Eagle, American Glory, American Independence, American Liberty and American Star. The ships accommodate 90 or 100 passengers.

A vibrant quilt of orange, red and yellow unfolds as you glide down the Hudson River. Port calls along the way include the Catskills, Hyde Park, West Point and Sleepy Hollow. Excursions showcase each region's history and culture and are offered for all activity levels.

In the Catskills, passengers can take a moderate hike for sweeping views of New York's Kaaterskill Falls, one of America's oldest tourist attractions. Spend time exploring Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site or sampling local cheeses and apples during a call on Hyde Park. Lean into the spooky season in Sleepy Hollow with a tour of the Gothic Lyndhurst Mansion or Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, the final resting place of Washington Irving, who penned the iconic short story.

Fall 2024 itineraries depart between late September and early November. Similar departure dates are available in 2025. Fares for the round-trip Hudson River Fall Foliage cruises start from $5,760 per person. Fares are all-inclusive and come with all meals, snacks, drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and gratuities. The cost also covers port charges and fees.

Oceania Cruises: Northern Europe cruises

best caribbean cruises from new york

If you've amassed a stockpile of vacation days, consider using them on an extended cruise through Northern Europe with Oceania Cruises .

The line offers an 18-night sailing to Reykjavik and a 23-night voyage to Copenhagen, both of which depart from New York City. Both sailings are aboard the 670-passenger Insignia, among Oceania's smaller ships. Insignia provides a relatively uncrowded atmosphere thanks to a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than on Oceania's larger vessels.

Additionally, the ship's smaller size means it can visit ports that larger ships can't access, providing a more intimate and immersive destination experience.

Port call excursions on the New York-to-Reykjavik itinerary include a visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia's Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, home to the world's largest collection of wooden artifacts from the Titanic. In Nuuk, Greenland, passengers can visit a local family and learn about their culture and customs. Stroll through botanical gardens or check out the world's northernmost 18-hole golf course in Akureyri, Iceland.

A Copenhagen sailing also calls at Halifax, Nuuk and Reykjavik. Additional ports include Torshavn, Denmark; Kristiansand, Norway; and Gothenburg, Sweden.

Rates for an 18-night New York-to-Reykjavik sailing that departs Aug. 6, 2025, start from $6,299 per person for an inside cabin. A 2024 itinerary for a 23-night New York-to-Copenhagen itinerary departs July 12, with rates starting from $8,199 per person for an inside cabin.

Celebrity Cruises: Bermuda cruises

best caribbean cruises from new york

Celebrity Cruises offers two seven-night Bermuda sailings from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, aboard Celebrity Eclipse or Celebrity Silhouette, both in the line's Solstice Class of ships.

Slightly smaller than Edge Class vessels, Solstice Class ships feature chic outdoor pool decks, expansive spas, casinos and a generous selection of onboard dining, including Murano, Celebrity's signature French restaurant.

Both sailings include two overnight stays in Bermuda, giving passengers plenty of time to take in Bermuda's attractions. The ship docks at the historic Royal Naval Dockyard at the island's West End, which is a hub for shops, local craft markets and restaurants. Elsewhere on the island, the 117-foot Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, one of only two cast-iron lighthouses still in existence, provides one of the best views in Bermuda. Of course, the island's pink sand beaches offer an idyllic setting for a relaxing day off the ship.

Several 2024 itineraries are available throughout the summer, beginning with a May 19 departure. For 2025, there are seven sailings beginning with a May 18 itinerary. Fares start from $548 per person for an inside cabin and exclude taxes, fees and port expenses (about $264 per person).

Silversea Cruises: New England and Canada cruises

best caribbean cruises from new york

For ultra-luxury afloat, consider one of Silversea Cruises ' 11-night sailings from New York City to Montreal aboard Silver Shadow. Carrying just 382 guests, this intimate all-suite ship is still large enough to offer multiple dining venues. Options include La Dame, with its French-inspired cuisine and exceptional wines, and La Terrazza, the place to go for authentic Italian dishes.

Other onboard diversions include a pool, a full-service spa, a fitness center and a casino. Additionally, all suites feature butlers who can do everything from unpacking your luggage to securing special requests.

A highlight of Silver Shadow's New England and Canada itinerary is an overnight in Quebec City so guests can go ashore for dining and entertainment. This itinerary also includes cruising Quebec's forest-lined Saguenay River and port calls at Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Montreal, where the voyage ends.

The 2025 New England and Canada sailing departs Sept. 2. All-inclusive fares start from $6,850 per person.

Cunard Line: Transatlantic cruises

best caribbean cruises from new york

Cunard 's 2,691-passenger Queen Mary 2 regularly plies the Atlantic Ocean between New York City and Southampton, England. This "crossing" voyage is a throwback of sorts to the "Golden Age of Cruising," when movie stars and political leaders traveled via liner across the ocean.

Today, it's a one-of-a-kind experience with modern amenities, elegant dining, ballroom dancing, a planetarium, a full-service spa, wine tasting, enrichment activities and special event cruises.

Opt for a seven-, an eight- or a nine-night eastbound transatlantic crossing, or choose a 14-night round-trip voyage. Savor uninterrupted sea days, enjoy live music, play shuffleboard, learn from guest lecturers or take in a 3D film in the largest planetarium at sea.

For 2024, choose from six itineraries that depart in May, June and October. Three itineraries are currently listed for 2025 in January, March and May. Fares for transatlantic cruises start from $988 per person, excluding taxes, fees and port expenses, which start from $75.45.

Norwegian Cruise Line: Mediterranean cruises

best caribbean cruises from new york

Want to explore Europe without the intense jet lag? With this Norwegian Cruise Line cruise starting in New York City, you can spend six days making your way slowly across the Atlantic before spending another 10 days exploring destinations in Spain, France and Italy.

The 16-night sailing takes place aboard Norwegian Escape, departing from New York City and ending in Rome.

Norwegian originated the idea of "freestyle cruising" — a cruise vacation void of rigid dining schedules and dress codes — and is popular for those seeking a casual, resort-at-sea experience.

The ship features a wide range of dining venues like O'Sheehan's Bar & Grill for comfort food, Food Republic for Asian-Latin fusion cuisine and Bayamo by Ocean Blue for seafood. Entertainment options include shows like "Deal or No Deal" and "Wheel of Fortune." Plenty of attractions — including the top-deck Aqua Park, a ropes course, a casino, a minigolf course and a spa — provide onboard diversions.

Norwegian does a great job of prioritizing the 10 port calls on this itinerary, many of which average eight hours in length, so you can see as much of the destination as possible. Fill a day at the Balearic island of Ibiza in unspoiled Ses Salines Natural Park or the historic Dalt Vila district. In Cannes, France, tour the old town or peruse the Picasso Museum. Marvel at Michelangelo's David or browse some of Europe's oldest markets in Italy.

An April 8 sailing in 2024 is available. Fares start from $949 per person for an inside cabin. Fares exclude taxes, fees and port expenses (about $395 per person).

Holland America Line: Extended bucket-list cruises

best caribbean cruises from new york

If a monthlong voyage is on your wish list, Holland America Line offers two such cruises from New York City aboard the 1,400-passenger Volendam.

The 30-night Amazon Explorer departs from Manhattan and weaves its way through the Caribbean isles to Brazil, with port calls along the banks of the Amazon River. The itinerary then continues back through the Caribbean before finishing in Fort Lauderdale.

Cruisers have time to explore the iconic rainforest thanks to an overnight port call in Manaus, Brazil. Other destination highlights include St. Maarten; St. Lucia; Barbados; Devils Island, French Guiana; Santarem, Manaus and Parintins, Brazil; Trinidad and Tobago; Curacao; and Aruba.

Or, go all-out on a trip of a lifetime with the 45-night Ultimate Mediterranean and Atlantic Passage cruise. The round-trip itinerary from New York is one to add to your bucket list. Imagine overnight stays in Rome, Cairo and Istanbul — no air travel needed.

In Ponta Delgada, Portugal, cook your lunch in the natural hot springs of Furnas. Barcelona provides the opportunity to peruse art museums and sample authentic tapas. Additional port calls include Florence and Naples, Italy; Santorini, Greece; Seville, Spain; and Madeira, Portugal.

Volendam's smaller size means fewer onboard amenities, but guests can spend their sea days enjoying abundant and diverse live music options, a top-notch spa and fantastic food developed by culinary heavyweights like Ethan Stowell, Rudi Sodamin and Masaharu Morimoto.

The 30-night Amazon Explorer voyage departs Nov. 21, 2025. Fares start from $5,009 per person. Taxes, fees and port expenses are an additional cost (up to $845). The Mediterranean and Atlantic Passage sailing leaves Oct. 7, 2025. Fares start from $5,749 per person. Taxes, fees and port expenses are an additional cost (up to $795).

Best Time For cruises from nYC to bahamas

If you’re planning a cruise from New York to the Bahamas, you want to make sure you choose the best time to go. The weather in the Bahamas is warm and sunny year-round, but there are still some months that are better than others for cruising.

The best time to cruise from New York to the Bahamas is from December to April. This is the dry season in the Bahamas meaning you’ll have the best chance of sunny skies and calm seas. The average temperature during this time is in the mid-70s to low-80s, which is perfect for lounging on the deck and soaking up the sun.

If you’re looking for the best deals on Bahamas cruises, you may want to consider cruising during the shoulder season. This is the time between the high and low seasons, and it generally runs from May to November. While you may experience some rain and wind during this time, you’ll also find lower prices and fewer crowds.

Keep in mind that hurricane season in the Bahamas runs from June to November, so if you’re cruising during this time, be sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast and be prepared for itinerary changes.

There you have it, my 3 best Bahamas cruises from New York. As usual, let me know of your experiences here or if there is anything you think I need to add.

Also, please do not hesitate to comment below if you have any questions, concerns, or corrections or would like me to check anything else out for you.

Until next time.

My name is Paul and I love traveling with my wife Nic. We have been lucky enough in my life to be able to see a lot of the world. Oh, and not to mention all those tedious business trips that actually got me to places I would never have gone to as well.

But here’s the thing, we have made all of the mistakes that a traveler can make and have learned a lot along the way so we like to think we have a fairly good idea in regards to what it’s all about. So let's dive in.

Times Square

It wouldn’t be a trip to NYC without a stop at the overwhelming, world-famous Times Square, a stretch of several blocks of bright, flashing billboards and crowds clamoring for neon photos.

Top Things to Do in New York

Walk in central park.

Central Park is one of the largest parks in a metropolitan area. Comprised of over a mile of green space and walking trails, it offers a killer view of lower Manhattan from certain vistas. When you’re craving some time in nature in the middle of this loud, humming city, head to Central Park for a walk, a picnic, or just to people-watch.

Go to a Broadway Show

Theater lovers will plan an entire trip to New York around a single Broadway musical or play. If you can snag tickets, you’ll be front and center to some of the biggest performers and talents in the world, whether you’re seeing an established, multi-run show or something artsy off-Broadway.

Pay Respects at the 9/11 Memorial

Built to honor the lives lost as a result of the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001, the 9/11 Memorial is a harrowing must-see experience during a trip to New York. It relays the significance of the terrorist attacks not only on the New York community, but the United States as a whole.

Where should I eat in New York?

New York offers nearly every type of cuisine in the world, whether you’re craving an authentic New York slice of pizza or prefer to stop at one of the halal food trucks scattered throughout Manhattan. There are dozens of restaurants along every block. Famous spots include Peter Luger Steakhouse in Williamsburg, Katz Delicatessen, Gramercy Tavern, and Grand Central Oyster Bar.

What’s the culture and history of New York?

Native American groups have lived in the area now known as New York for thousands of years, and European settlement of the area didn’t begin until the 15th century. In the 1600s, the Dutch West India Company began a colony called “New Amsterdam” and expanded their living quarters into what we know now as Manhattan. The local population boomed, and the New Amsterdam area became known as a trade hub between the Dutch, Europeans, and the New World. By the mid-1600s, the British took control and kept it until after the Revolutionary War. During the 19th century, the melting pot of New York that the city is now famous for began to take shape as Ellis Island welcomed millions of immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and Germany. People from around the world settled throughout the five boroughs. Today, New York symbolizes the promise of an America with open arms for all types of people, and New York’s food, attractions, and cultural institutions celebrate that diversity.

Where can I go shopping near the cruise port?

For a glimpse of New York’s famous shopping scene, find a nearby subway station and head to Fifth Avenue or Madison Avenue, where you’ll find every luxury brand under the sun. SoHo boasts many of the biggest names and rising brands in fashion and design, while the windows of famous department stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdales attract thousands of eyes during the an. Of course, souvenir shacks with memorabilia of the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and the Chrysler Building aren’t hard to find either.

How can I get around New York City?

Getting to New York City from the cruise terminal is easy. There are several options including hailing a taxi, taking a train on the PATH Rapid Transit System train to Manhattan, or boarding a bus that will drop you off in the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Once you are there, the options for getting around the five boroughs are plentiful, as New York has one of the most comprehensive public transit systems in the U.S. The subway operates 24/7. If you’ve decided to stick to landmarks in a particular neighborhood, you’ll be able to get around on foot. If you’re tired, you can hail one of the city’s famous yellow cabs. Rideshares also operate here.

What are the local currency & tipping customs?

The U.S. Dollar (USD) is the official currency of NYC, and you’ll find ATMs are widespread. Most major credit cards are accepted as well, but it’s helpful to carry cash with you when you shop at bodegas. Many bars have a minimum purchase amount for credit or debit card use.
