Is a Dubai Desert Safari Worth It – What to Expect

The one thing I couldn’t wait to see when I moved to Dubai in 2005 was desert.  And as a visitor, I’m sure it’s the same for you… the desert sounds sooo exotic right! So you’ll not only want to see the massive skyscrapers and impressive architecture but also some of the natural views.  Well don’t worry, because it doesn’t take long as you drive from the city, till you see the rolling sand dunes.  And it’s awesome! The colour of the sand dunes become increasingly redder the further you drive from the coastline.  

🇦🇪 To say the sand dunes are impressive is an understatement.  They are stunning, and a desert safari is the best way to experience them.  Trust me when I say, you mustn’t leave Dubai without trying it!

The Best Time to Book a Dubai Desert Safari

A desert safari can be organized at any time during the year and there are some amazing discounts in the summer months of July and August .  But that’s for good reason.  Let’s be honest… it isn’t the most comfortable of experiences to visit the desert in the peak of summer.  It’s doable, but you’ll likely feel a little sweaty.  But we’ve done it, and if this is your only chance, then I say go for it! The chance may not return.

What to Wear

As with any place you visit in Dubai, you’ll see all types travellers.  Some people will cover up and some will show more skin than is appropriate.  When it comes to a desert safari it doesn’t matter too much, just dress yourself for comfort.  Out of respect, I always like to keep my shoulders covered and when it’s hot you’ll want to go with a light loose-fitting option. Just keep in mind you’ll probably be riding a camel so you’ll want to be practically dressed for such an occasion.

Alternatively, it does get cooler in the desert during the winter months, from November through till February.  So be prepared, bring a pashmina or sweater to put on for later in the evening.

A desert safari generally runs from the late afternoon into the evening. You can expect to be collected between 3pm and 4pm and following a full afternoon and evening of entertainment you’ll be returned to your accommodation by 10pm.  

What Does a Desert Safari in Dubai Cost

The price varies depending on the organisation that you go with.  But this is an experience you don’t want to go too cheap on.  I recommend finding a mid-range priced desert safari is best.  The cheaper ones we have experienced are cheap for a reason and the desert safari was less memorable.  The mid-range to more expensive desert safaris, quite simply put, provide a better product. 

Furthermore, over the years the ever-growing list of desert safari providers has meant that quality has notably changed. The increase in tours has also made it overwhelming in finding the right one… am I right?!  

However, we’ve done the research for you. Read on to the end for the best Dubai desert safari for every budget. Our recommendations include big discounts… so make sure you go through our links for the best deals in town.

What is Included

You’ll be very well looked after on the tour.  All refreshments and a BBQ dinner are provided within the package fee, along with pickup and drop-off to your accommodation.  The drivers are always good fun for a chat.  The 4x4s are often Toyota Landcruisers, with one seat available in the front, three in the middle and room for two in the back.  

Children from two or three years and above can join in the fun, but you should contact the tour provider to make arrangements separately for this. 

Insider tip: try and get a seat at the front of the 4×4.  The closer you get to the front the more adrenaline fuelled the dune bashing will be.  But also, the further towards the back of the 4×4, you may be more likely to experience some car sickness.  Trust me… you get thrown around. 

All activities mentioned below are included in the desert safari package, usually with the exception of dune buggy or motor bike rides, if they are available.

🚨 Update 2023 : Many tour providers have now started charging extra for activities such as shisha and camel riding. Particularly the cheaper tours. Therefore I stress… read the fine print of the tour package you choose before you hit that purchase button!

The Experience of a Dubai Desert Safari

Below are a list of the activities normally included within the better quality desert safaris in Dubai.

Dune Bashing

As I said earlier the rolling red dunes are incredible and a 4×4 bash around the dunes is so much FUN!  I’m not a huge adrenaline junky, but I make an exception for dune bashing (the name given to this crazy fun activity).  The driver arrives at the base of the dunes, lets air out of the tyres and off you go. As you boost it to the top of the dune and slide down the other side, it kind of feels like gliding through thick butter.  And just at the point it feels like the driver has lost control he spins the wheel and rights the 4×4.  As I say… SO MUCH FUN!

🌅 Just in time for sunset the driver arrives at the perfect spot to catch the sun disappear.  Here you have the opportunity to jump out and take in the view.  Soak it up, as it’s a pretty unique experience.

Then when the sun has set and the dune bashing is done, it’s time to head to the bedouin camp for entertainment and dinner.

Camel Riding

Take a camel ride! Do it, no questions asked. Because I can tell you there is nothing quite like it.  Get your balance as the camel rises from the ground, he throws you forward then backward as he moves his bulk to stand.  This is a SUPER touristy experience but hey… when in Dubai, you ride a camel!

Dune Boarding

Once again, strap that board on and give it a go.  Whether you’ve boarded before or not, it isn’t super fast and what’s the worst that can happen if you come off.  You’ll just end up with super fine desert sand in all the most annoying places. Nothing major right?!

In a nutshell, this is the Middle Eastern and Indian practice of painting a natural ink in beautiful patterns on wrists and hands. It is left to dry for about 30 minutes, which then leaves a stained pattern in its place. Henna is pretty and a nice thing to try on a desert safari.

Shisha Smoking

The hookah pipes are locally referred to as shisha. They are filled with a moist fruit flavoured tobacco and are actually pretty fun to try… and I’m not a smoker. Flavours such as double apple or grape with mint are popular and pretty tasty.

Once again, shisha is a local experience and very much embedded in local culture. Give it a try if it’s on offer as you probably won’t get another chance to smoke like this in the desert ever again.

Belly Dancing

This is always the cringy part of the evening for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the entertainment and the dancers are obviously very talented. But then they bring up the unsuspecting tourist and have them join in with the belly dancing.

💃 Avoid eye-contact and don’t sit too close to the front if you don’t want to be singled out as that person. However, if you love that kind of thing then you put that hand up!

To end the evening there is a fantastic BBQ spread, normally complete with breads, hummus, tabouleh, salads, rice and meat. The food is buffet style so you can go up for more, and you probably will because the food is super tasty.

Soft beverages are generally included in the package, with house beverages available for an extra cost.

The Extras on a Desert Safari

It’s often practice to pull up to a small shop before the dune bashing begins. A place where all the 4x4s stop to meet before the experience really begins. Be warned, these little shops are extremely expensive, they are somewhat of a tourist trap. Instead bring water with you!

Photos and Videos

Often photographers and videographers will be roaming around during the afternoon and evening. They will collect footage which they then put together to sell you at the end of the night.

Insider tip: you can get it at a steal if you say no and wait until just before you leave, as they’ll often significantly discount their prices.

Be aware also that you should clarify before having a falcon thrust into your hand if the experience is a paid one or not. I’m not sure if this practice is still tried, but often in Dubai this is a common situation.

Dune Buggy & Quad Bikes

There are often opportunities to take buggy rides or quad bike rides at the meeting point before the dune bashing begins or at the bedouin camp. It’s a token experience and you’ll pay extra for this.

It’s always a courtesy to tip the driver at the end of your desert safari. For a family, anything between 50-100 dirhams is fair based on your enjoyment of the experience of course.

These guys are going to tick the desert safari box in that you’ll get to say, hey yes I’ve been there done that. They are the cheapest option here, but if you are travelling as a large family this will likely suit you just fine! What’s even better is that this price is discounted through Cobone , which is one of the best platforms for picking up a bargain in Dubai. We use Cobone and if you want to see Dubai on a budget then I recommend you use them too!

I will also mention here that you can book even cheaper still, but honestly I leave them off my list for a reason. Too budget and you loose the reason behind taking this adventure.

Starting times vary from 8 am, 9 am or 10 am in the morning, and 3 pm in the afternoon which means that you will catch the sunset before you depart. Again, you will be collected from your hotel or desired location.

As with the first tour, this safari offers a couple of customization options. Those include upgrading from a shared tour to a private tour and adding quad biking if you wish.

This is a 225 square kilometer (87.1 square miles) natural reserve which limits the number of tour operators who are permitted to organize trips here. This means that with minimal impact on the environment you can see what the region would have looked like centuries ago. In fact, another wonderful factor about this safari tour is that a contribution is made directly to the reserve when you book your place. 

After taking an informative tour through the conversation reserve you will relax at an evocatively lit Bedouin camp and immerse yourself in activities such as camel rides, henna artistry, shisha, and befriending the falcons.

The most important thing to keep in mind when booking your hotel room is the location. Dubai is huge and spread out, so you want to make sure you’re staying in an area that’s close to the sights and attractions you want to see.

Generally speaking, here are the best areas to stay in Dubai:

Deira – If you’re looking for a more traditional Arabic experience, you can’t go wrong with Deira. It’s also one of the more affordable areas in Dubai.

Bur Dubai – This is a great option if you want to be close to the action. Bur Dubai is home to many of the city’s best hotels, restaurants, and nightlife venues.

Palm Jumeirah – If you’re looking for a luxurious and relaxing vacation, look no further than Palm Jumeirah. This artificial island is home to some of Dubai’s most exclusive hotels and resorts.

Downtown Dubai – This is the best area for those who want to be close to the city’s most popular attractions, like the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall.

Dubai Marina – This is a great option if you’re looking for a more laid-back atmosphere. The Dubai Marina is home to many restaurants and bars, as well as a beautiful waterfront promenade.

MID-RANGE – Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina

Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina has a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and a bar in Dubai. Boasting family rooms, this property also provides guests with a sun terrace. The accommodation features a 24-hour front desk, room service, and currency exchange for guests.

BUDGET – Gulf Inn Hotel Al Nasr

Gulf Inn Hotel Al Nasr (formerly Roda Links Al Nasr) features a restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and a shared lounge in Dubai. Featuring family rooms, this property also provides guests with a sun terrace. Gulf Inn Hotel Al Nasr offers a continental or buffet breakfast.

How to get to Dubai

Being the biggest hub between Europe and Asia and one of the busiest airports in the world, Dubai International Airport (DXB) welcomes a huge number of airlines and connects the city with the rest of the world.

Located only 15 km (9.3 miles) from Downtown Dubai, flying to DXB is the most convenient way to get to the city. Once you land, there are several ways to get into the city center: you can take a taxi, the metro, or even the bus.

Although DXB is the biggest airport in Dubai, you can also choose to fly to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This airport is located in the Jebel Ali area, about 50 km (31 miles) from Downtown Dubai, and it mostly handles cargo flights and low-cost carriers.

How to get around in Dubai

Dubai is an enormous city and getting around can be a bit daunting, especially if you’re not used to such big metropolises. The good news is that there are plenty of options when it comes to transportation.

Public transportation – Dubai has both metro and public bus systems in place. Although the metro is the most efficient way to get around, it only covers certain areas of the city. The bus system, on the other hand, covers a larger area but it can be quite slow during rush hour. This is definitely the cheapest way to get around Dubai, however, it can be pretty time-consuming.

Taxis – Taxis are widely available in Dubai and they’re relatively affordable, especially if you’re splitting the fare with someone. Your best bet is downloading the Careem app, which is similar to Uber, and lets you order a traditional Dubai taxi or a private vehicle.

Car rental – If you want the freedom to explore Dubai at your own pace, then renting a car is the way to go. Just keep in mind that traffic can be pretty bad during rush hour, so you might want to avoid driving during those times.

Best time to visit Dubai

The best time to visit Dubai is between November and March when the weather is cooler and more bearable. This is also the peak tourist season, so you can expect higher prices and bigger crowds.

If you don’t mind the heat, then you can visit Dubai during the summer months (June to August), when temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F). Each and every place is air-conditioned in Dubai, so you can take refuge from the heat indoors.

Just keep in mind that outdoor attractions such as gardens and water parks will be much less enjoyable during this time and it’s practically impossible to swim in the ocean because of the high temperatures.

If you want to avoid the crowds and get cheaper rates, then April, May, September, and October are the best months to visit Dubai. Prices will be lower and the weather will still be relatively pleasant.

Another thing to keep in mind: Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar but the exact dates change every year (usually it falls between March and May).

During this time, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and many restaurants and cafes will be closed during the day. Alcohol is also not served during Ramadan. However, nightlife carries on as usual and many hotels offer special rates during this period.

If you’re not Muslim, then you can still visit Dubai during Ramadan, you just need to be respectful of the local customs and traditions.

All your Dubai desert safari tours include return transfers. With this option, you can choose to either be picked up directly at your hotel in Dubai (this option is not applicable for hotels located in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi) or get picked up at a central point in the city. Here, we detail what are the different pick-up points in the city and the different desert locations you can opt for your experience.

Depending on your ticket, there are several pick-up points to choose from. We recommend arriving at the pick-up point 15 minutes before your allotted time slot. Some popular pick-up points are:

• Deira City Centre: On the Red Line of the Dubai Metro
• Burjuman Spinneys: Located close to Burjuman metro station, on the Red and Green Line
• Lulu Mall: Located close to the Mall of the Emirates metro station, on the Red Line
• Sahara Centre (Dubai side): Use buses E306, E307, E307A and E400
• Al Mulla Plaza: Use buses C14 or F23, or get off at Stadium metro station
• Dragon Mart: Located close to Rashidiya metro station, on the Red Line

Dubai is home to an endless expanse of golden deserts. These deserts are primarily located on the outskirts of the city. You don’t have to worry about planning the commute from your hotel to the desert since your ticket includes return transfers; you will be picked up and dropped back to your hotel after the experience. Dubai airport operations ramp back up as flooding from UAE's heaviest rains ever recorded lingers on roads

Dubai, United Arab Emirates  — The United Arab Emirates struggled Thursday to recover from the heaviest recorded rainfall ever to hit the desert nation, as its main airport worked to restore normal operations even as floodwater still covered portions of major highways and roads.

Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international travel, allowed global carriers on Thursday morning to again fly into Terminal 1 at the airfield. Later Thursday, the facility said in a message posted on social media that its Terminal 3 was also reopening for flight check-in, but it warned passengers to come only if their pending departure was confirmed due to "a high volume of guests in the check-in area."

"Flights continue to be delayed and disrupted, so we urge you to only come to Terminal 1 if you have a confirmed booking," the airport said in its series of tweets .

Later Thursday, a message shared by the Dubai government's media office quoted the Dubai International Airport's Chief Operating Officer Majed Al Joker as saying the facility would "return to its full operational capacity within 24 hours."

The long-haul carrier Emirates, whose operations had been struggling since the storm Tuesday, had stopped travelers flying out of the UAE from checking into their flights as they tried to move out connecting passengers. Pilots and flight crews had been struggling to reach the airport given the water on roadways. But on Thursday, they lifted that order to allow customers into the airport.

Others who arrived at the airport described hourslong waits to get their baggage, with some just giving up to head home or to whatever hotel would have them.

The UAE, a hereditarily ruled, autocratic nation on the Arabian Peninsula, typically sees little rainfall in its arid desert climate. However, a massive storm forecasters had been warning about for days blew through the country's seven sheikhdoms. By the end of Tuesday, more than 5.59 inches of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours. An average year sees 3.73 inches of rain at Dubai International Airport. Other areas of the country saw even more precipitation.

The UAE's drainage systems quickly became overwhelmed, flooding out neighborhoods, business districts and even portions of the 12-lane Sheikh Zayed Road highway running through Dubai.

The state-run WAM news agency called the rain "a historic weather event" that surpassed "anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949."

In a message to the nation late Wednesday, Emirati leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, said authorities would "quickly work on studying the condition of infrastructure throughout the UAE and to limit the damage caused."

On Thursday, people waded through oil-slicked floodwater to reach cars earlier abandoned, checking to see if their engines still ran. Tanker trucks with vacuums began reaching some areas outside of Dubai's downtown core for the first time as well. Schools remain closed until next week.

Authorities have offered no overall damage or injury information from the floods, which killed at least one person.

"Crises reveal the strength of countries and societies," Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, wrote on X. "The natural climate crisis that we experienced showed the great care, awareness, cohesion and love for every corner of the country from all its citizens and residents."

The flooding sparked speculation that the UAE's aggressive campaign of cloud seeding  — flying small planes through clouds dispersing chemicals aimed at getting rain to fall  — may have contributed to the deluge. But experts said the storm systems that produced the rain were forecast well in advance and that cloud seeding alone would not have caused such flooding.

Jeff Masters, a meteorologist for Yale Climate Connections, said the flooding in Dubai was caused by an unusually strong low pressure system that drove many rounds of heavy thunderstorms.

Climatologists have warned for years that human-driven  climate change  is fueling  more extreme and less predictable weather  events across the globe.

Parts of southern Russia and Central Asia have also been dealing for days with unusually damaging amounts of rainfall and snowmelt, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate to higher ground and  killing more than 120 people  in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Dubai hosted the United Nations' COP28 climate talks just last year.

Abu Dhabi's state-linked newspaper The National, in an editorial Thursday, described the heavy rains as a warning to countries in the wider Persian Gulf region to "climate-proof their futures."

"The scale of this task is more daunting that it appears even at first glance, because such changes involve changing the urban environment of a region that for as long as it has been inhabited, has experienced little but heat and sand," the newspaper said.
