Student Manual

Published on Nov 13, 2020

To: International Students From: Nick Seamons, Director, Office of International Affairs, and Blake Wilcox, Executive Director, COVID-19 Testing Program  Subject: International Travel and COVID-19 Testing Date: November 6, 2020

We know many of you are planning to travel internationally at the end of Autumn Quarter and may be required to provide documentation of a negative COVID-19 test within a specified timeframe prior to departure or upon arrival. We are writing to provide you with information on the COVID-19 testing options available to you to fulfill this requirement.

The COVID-19 tests performed by UChicago Medicine and the University of Chicago COVID-19 Surveillance Testing Program meet the requirements for international travel. Testing is available to you at no cost. Your test results will be available in your MyChart account and can be used as your COVID-19 test documentation.

It is your responsibility to understand the pre-travel testing necessary for your destination, and to determine when you need to be tested based on those requirements. Please familiarize yourself with your destination-specific requirements prior to requesting a test date. It may take up to 48 hours for your test results to be released.

Requesting a COVID-19 Test (SARS-CoV-2 nucleic)

At least a week before your departure , use the process below to request a pre-travel COVID-19 test:

  • Mandatory and Voluntary Surveillance Testing Program Participants : Students who are participants in the University of Chicago Mandatory or Voluntary Surveillance Testing Programs should email  [email protected]  to schedule an additional pre-travel test if required by your travel itinerary. Please use the subject line  “International Travel Test Appointment”  and include your requested test date in the email.  Any additional questions about your pre-travel test should be directed to  [email protected]  as well.
  • Other Students:  Students who are not participating in the University’s Surveillance Testing Program should call UChicago Student Wellness at 773-834-WELL to make an appointment for a pre-travel COVID-19 test. If you are not an existing patient with UChicago Student Wellness, they will initiate a MyChart health portal activation for you. You must complete the MyChart activation process in order to receive your results. Call 773-834-WELL with any additional questions about your pre-travel test.

Prior to your test, please make sure your MyChart health portal is active. We strongly recommend you print or have an electronic copy of your pre-travel COVID-19 test results from MyChart to take with you for either pre-flight inspection or to present upon arrival.

Pre-travel COVID-19 tests will be conducted at the  950 E. 61 st  St. (formerly known as Woodlawn Social Services Center) testing depot . When you arrive at the testing site, please indicate that you scheduled a pre-travel COVID-19 test.

When determining your requested test date, please keep in mind that the Student Wellness Center and the Surveillance Testing Program test site will be closed for several days for the Thanksgiving holiday.

  • The Student Wellness Center will be closed starting at noon on Wednesday, November 25, through Sunday, November 29.
  • The Surveillance Testing Program test site at 950 E. 61 st  St. will be closed starting at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, through Sunday, November 29.

If students need a pre-travel test between November 26-30, the only University option is at the UChicago Medicine curbside testing clinic on Saturday, November 28.   Tests at the UCM curbside testing clinic alternate location must be scheduled by a staff member of UChicago Student Wellness before noon on November 25 . Please call 773-834-WELL and let the staff member know your requested pre-travel COVID-19 test date. It may take up to 48 hours for your test results to be released.

Obtaining a COVID-19 Antibody Test

In addition to a negative COVID-19 test, some international destinations may require a negative antibody test.  This test requires that a blood sample be taken, which can be done by appointment in the Student Wellness Center.  If you need this test performed for purposes of travel, please call 773-834-WELL for an appointment.  This test cannot be performed at the same location as the COVID-19 nasal swab test, and must be scheduled separately.   Some international locations may require an antibody test that is not performed on campus.  We encourage you to know the exact type of antibody test that is required by your destination and then call UChicago Student Wellness for consultation.

If your pre-travel COVID-19 test returns a positive result, you should not travel and should immediately begin isolating. UChicago Student Wellness staff will contact you to provide guidance on your next steps.

Some students traveling internationally to very restrictive countries may be asked to provide lab certification. You may request this certification at the time of testing or search for it via the CDC website:

Global treks provide students with new perspective on their careers

Immersive spring break trips range from asia to switzerland to mexico city.

Editor’s note: This story is part of Dispatches from Abroad , a series highlighting UChicago community members who are researching, studying and working around the world.

Members of the University of Chicago community spent their recent spring breaks traveling abroad, exploring a wealth of opportunities while experiencing rich, intellectual discussions and career insights. These graduate and undergraduate students spent their days engaging with institutions, experts and UChicago alumni, and their evenings enjoying the diversity of local culture.

The graduate trips were organized through the Law School and the Committee on International Relations. The undergraduate career treks were organized through UChicago’s Office of Career Advancement, with support from UChicago Global. Erwin Paderanga, who oversees the trek program at Career Advancement, said: “Treks offer a one-of-a-kind experience. Students travel to cities across the U.S. and around the world to meet UChicago’s global network of alumni and employers. It’s a wonderful way to experience a ‘day in the life’ of their dream job and get an inside view on how they can find jobs and internships."

Learn more about their recent journeys below:

‘A different view of the world’ in Geneva

Second-year College student Alyssa Manthi’s trip to Geneva, Switzerland was her first internationally.

As part of their three-day trek focused on public policy and organized through UChicago’s Office of Career Advancement, Manthi and her fellow students visited a number of UN agencies and nonprofits —meeting with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, as well as other UN entities.

As a student double majoring in English and human rights, Manthi enjoyed the variety of opportunities the career trek unearthed. She also said the trip sparked a new interest in international opportunities.

Coming from a high school in the Chicago suburbs, Manthi said: “I just never had opportunities like this before. It was nice to get a different view of the world. Maybe I’ll go work abroad when I graduate. That’s an option that I hadn’t really considered before.”

Though her trip to Geneva was her first outside of the U.S., Manthi is not waiting long to travel again. This quarter she is at the UChicago Center in Paris, continuing her studies in human rights as well as adding to her international experiences.

Reflecting on her time in Geneva, Manthi’s big takeaway was the potential of exploring an international career. “There are so many options out there that I just never really considered before,” she said.

Finding new perspectives in Taiwan

For several years, Matthias Staisch has led graduate students on trips to Asia, through his role as associate director of the Committee on International Relations (CIR). This year, he and his colleague Pinar Alakoç, Associate Instructional Professor in CIR, took a group of 14 students to Taiwan to visit with universities, media outlets, government offices and other entities to engage in conversations about issues in Taiwan and the region.

“A typical day involves two to three site visits,” said Staisch, an associate senior instructional professor in CIR. “It can be a visit at a university. It can be a visit at a think-tank. It can be a panel with journalists. Sometimes it’s an all-day event. We did one day trip and did high-speed rail to the southern city of Kaohsiung.”

The committee relies on UChicago Global as well as the UChicago centers in Delhi and Hong Kong to help facilitate these trips. It’s a lot of work, Staisch said, but it’s well worth it for the benefit CIR students receive.

For master’s student Diego Rivera-Irizarry, the trip was an opportunity to gather insights for his thesis, which examines how Latin American countries balance their relationships with China and Taiwan.

“I really enjoyed getting the chance to not just see Taiwan but to meet Taiwanese people. To really get to humanize a people and a country that you read so much about in the U.S. in an academic setting,” he said.

Both he and fellow master’s student Musa Ali received insights into the perspectives of Taiwanese people and students. They also reveled in being able to experience local culture, such as visiting the mountain town of Jiufen—known for its resemblance to the town in Studio Ghibli’s movie Spirited Away .

Several participants hiked to Taiwan’s famous Elephant Mountain, which is renowned for being easily accessible from Taipei. Ali hiked along the trail on his final day in Taiwan. “It was sunset, and you could see the whole city. It was really beautiful,” he said.

The Taiwan trip was not just about the place and the people, but also its insights to new ideas and perspectives. “You get to see a different conceptualization of the world itself, something that you weren’t really familiar with before,” said Rivera-Irizarry.

Conducting immersive research in Mexico City

As an undergraduate student, Keyana Banisadre wanted to have the classic study abroad experience, but COVID prevented that from happening. Now as a first-year law student, she jumped at the chance to travel internationally for spring break as part of international immersion trips organized by the Law School.

Banisadre traveled to Mexico City, where she and other law students spent their days visiting a variety of places and meeting diverse groups of people, including UChicago alumni. One highlight was visiting the Mexican Supreme Court and meeting with Justice Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena.

One distinguishing piece of the Law School trip was that each student used the trip as the basis for a research paper. Banisadre’s is on the enforcement and protection of U.S.-based intellectual property in Mexico.

“My family’s from Iran, and every time you go to Iran, there are Gucci T-shirts on every corner,” said Banisadre. “What can you do about that? And I was surprised, actually, how much you could do in Mexico in that regard.”

Banisadre enjoyed her evenings out in Mexico City, when she and her fellow law students investigated the rich variety of restaurants and neighborhoods. But she said what she’ll remember most is the perspective that international travel provides.

“You talk to these [Mexican] legal professionals. They don’t like the President. They don’t like how things are going, but there’s a lot of hope still. A lot of people are still fighting to make it better. We come back to the U.S. saying: ‘OK, we are in a position where we really have an opportunity here, and it's not so bad, and it's not something that's inevitable and is irreversible,’” Banisadre said. “And so I think that was the biggest takeaway. If these people can see a way to improve and change and ultimately make a system where people have more rights, we easily can too. There’s no reason we should become pessimistic with the state of affairs.”

Seeing innovation first-hand in China

First-year College student Doris Hado is no stranger to international travel. She is Albanian and has traveled throughout Europe and the United States, but her recent spring break trek to China was her first time in Asia.

Hado’s trek began as more of a sprint. She finished Winter Quarter exams in the evening of March 7, and less than 24 hours later, she was at O’Hare Airport boarding a flight to Taiwan—the first leg of the journey—before traveling on to Guangzhou in China.

Hado’s trip was organized and facilitated through UChicago’s Office of Career Advancement, the UChicago Center in Beijing, and UChicago Global. Organized around the theme of business and innovation, it featured visits to a variety of companies in Shenzhen and Guangzhou. One visit that made a big impression on Hado was the Guangzhou headquarters of BYD, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of electric vehicles.

“We were able to see future production models for electric vehicle buses and different kinds of batteries that were in production,” Hado said. “They wanted to show the durability of their batteries, so they lit it on fire in this screening room in front of us. We could see that nothing happened to it.”

After the day’s visits, Hado said her group would walk for hours, discovering interesting things along the way, including street food and incredible breakfast buffets. “I think the entire world has gotten breakfast wrong in comparison to China,” Hado said. “I’m so longing for that buffet style.”

Although the trek was focused on business and innovation, the companies that Hado and her colleagues visited demonstrated the many ways to approach this theme. “I really admire the diversity of different employers and companies and firms that we met,” Hado said. “It's just a whole other world of understanding when you actually see everything from big banks to startups.”

TRAVEL ADVISORY; New Clinic Serves Visitors to Moscow

TRAVEL ADVISORY; New Clinic Serves Visitors to Moscow

A new private clinic has opened in Moscow to serve travelers as well as residents. The service is provided by U.S. Global Health, a members-only joint venture of Columbia-Presbyterian Health Services; the Fund for Large Enterprises in Russia, a private investment company, and Pepsico World Trading, which helps develop businesses for its parent company, Pepsico.

Four American-trained, board-certified doctors and their assistants prescribe medications and provide diagnostic outpatient services and lab work. Doctors are on 24-hour call and in emergencies will make house calls, according to Sherrie Dulworth, Global's director of sales and marketing. The clinic will also arrange for emergency hospitalization at the Kuntsevo Central Clinical Hospital.

A 10-day "tourist" membership is $39, with separate charges for medical services, which are comparable to those charged in the United States. Global honors most major American insurance policies. A one-year family membership is $950, $475 for an individual and $90 for business travelers. A trial 30-day membership costs $90 for individuals and $150 for families. U.S. Global Health is at Fourth Dobryninsky Lane; telephone (7-095) 974-2332, fax (7-095) 974-2400. In the United States, (800) 335-9068.

The R&K Guide To Moscow

The World Cup is upon us, but you could argue that it’s already a relic from another era, a time when Putin was looking for peaceable engagement with the West, before he annexed Crimea and unleashed his trolls on the world. But if ordinary Russians are supposed to play the part of pariah, they haven’t been told. It has been a long time since Moscow was this pleasant to visit. The city center is safe, sanitized, ready for your visit. Yes, the calm is a sign of an increasingly efficient autocracy. But we’ve known Moscow through many iterations, and for the casual visitor, this is one of the best yet. (Visit our St. Petersburg guide here.)

Softball Bags Two Run Rule Games Against WLC

  • University of Chicago's (17-8) march to a four-game winning streak began with a 10-2 thumping of Wisconsin Lutheran (9-19). Four of those runs were scored in a first inning that was highlighted but an Audrey Hui RBI double and an  Anna Jensen two tally base hit.
  • The Warriors were the next to score and plated two in the fourth to cut the Maroons lead in half. However, a UChicago run in the bottom of the same frame got one of those back and gave them momentum heading into the latter half of the contest. A three run fifth gave the Maroon & White plenty of insurance runs and set up a two run sixth stanza that helped them end the game early thanks to a Madeline Murphy two RBI triple.
  • Paige Heffke owned the circle in the eight-run victory, not giving up a single earned tally in six innings pitched. She also struck out nine on her way to her eighth win of the season.
  • The Maroons snagged a run in the top of the first in game two before they gave themselves a cushion in a three run second. Mia Bocian tripled to drive in the first run of the inning before Matilda Nelson and Natalie Antin also earned RBIs to put UChicago up 4-0.
  • The third stanza was the only one where the Maroons didn't score a run as they added another in the fourth before pouring on four in the fifth and two in the sixth. The blow to end the game one frame early was landed by Bocian who singled to left to score Alana Yazek right after Yazek plated the first run of the inning.
  • The trio of Delaney Romanchick , Nicole Wong , and Alana Kimball handled the pitching for UChicago and gave the home team a solid chance to secure the sweep on the day behind six innings of three run ball and four strikeouts. Wong was first up in relief and picked up her fourth win of the season as UChicago earned the victory with a 11-3 score.
  • Madeline Murphy : 3-for-4, triple, three runs scored, three RBIs
  • Paige Heffke : 6.0 innings pitched, no earned runs, nine strikeouts
  • Mia Bocian : 2-for-3, triple, two runs scored, two RBIs
  • Delaney Romanchick : 2.1 innings pitched, one earned run, three strikeouts
